Women In Blue Celebration: “HERstory”

San Diego Police Foundation

The San Diego Police Foundation convened regional business and community leaders to honor the achievements of San Diego Police Department (SDPD) female leaders and to elevate inclusion, leadership, and the empowerment of women. The 13th annual Women in Blue Luncheon: “HERstory,” was held on February 27, 2024, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

This year’s Women in Blue Luncheon honored Assistant Chief Sandra Albrektsen with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the San Diego Police Department and the Women in Blue Initiative. Chief Albrektsen has been a member of SDPD for over 41 years and has been the highest-ranking active-duty female officer since 2018. She is also a founding member of the Women Leaders in Law Enforcement.

The annual luncheon serves as the signature event of the Women in Blue Initiative, celebrating gender diversity in an occupation traditionally pursued by men and propelling the advancement and representation of women in policing. The “HERstory” event theme is a vibrant tribute to the Honor, Excellence, and Resilience embodied by our women in blue, shedding light on the remarkable women behind the uniform.

The Women in Blue Initiative provides funding for training, mentoring, collaboration, and networking opportunities for aspiring female leaders in law enforcement, including grants for women in blue to attend the national Women in Law Enforcement Leadership Symposium (WLLE).

YIGBY Breaks Ground on San Diego Affordable Housing for Veterans, Seniors Experiencing Homelessness

Innovative cross-sector partnership with San Diego’s oldest African American church will provide 26 residential units in Logan Heights

Yes in God’s Backyard (YIGBY) marked a significant milestone as they broke ground on a new construction project in collaboration with Bethel AME Church of San Diego. This multifamily project will deliver 26 units, offering affordable housing to formerly homeless veterans and seniors. By combining the resources and expertise of philanthropic organizations, the faith community, the private sector, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the San Diego Housing Commission, this partnership aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing available to vulnerable populations.

The Foundations of Faith Ceremony, attended by staff, City Officials, and representatives from partner organizations, took place at 3180 Imperial Avenue. The three-story residential development represents YIGBY’s first affordable housing endeavor, marking a significant step forward in their mission. The project will provide 16 units for veterans, with rents subsidized through the San Diego Housing Commission through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) voucher program. Additionally, nine units will be allocated for seniors or additional VASH residents. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will provide off-site case management and clinical services, while Brilliant Corners, a homeless housing placement provider, will identify eligible veterans and manage placement for future occupancy.

“In laying the literal foundation for our transformative multifamily project, we are not just constructing homes; we are building a foundation of hope and stability for our new tenants,” says Rev. Harvey L. Vaughn III, senior pastor at Bethel AME Church, “This inaugural project stands as the cornerstone, the bedrock upon which YIGBY will expand its mission. The name ‘Foundation of Faith’ reflects not only the physical groundwork we are laying but also the belief that this endeavor is a sacred commitment to provide affordable housing to formerly homeless veterans and seniors. The scripture reminds us, ‘for no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ’ (1 Corinthians 3:11). For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building (1 Corinthians 3:9). Together, we’re creating a foundation of faith in the power of community, compassion, and dedicated individuals to make a lasting impact.”

“Leveraging the faith community’s excess land provides a unique opportunity to address the affordable housing crisis in our region,” stated Andy Ballester, cofounder of YIGBY. “Through this collaborative approach, congregations can create a triple bottom line where they are providing mission-driven housing solutions and contributing to their own financial sustainability. The unique funding model leverages diverse sources of financial and philanthropic capital, thus avoiding the delays and costs of traditional affordable housing tax credit financing.”

The project will feature one-bedroom apartments and incorporate sustainable design elements to enhance energy efficiency. YIGBY remains committed to partnering with public and private entities to develop housing options on faith community land throughout San Diego neighborhoods. As their first affordable housing project to break ground, the Bethel project showcases the YIGBY model as part of the solution to the region’s housing and homelessness crisis. Founded with the goal of addressing San Diego’s housing crisis, YIGBY combines the real estate assets of the faith community with financing and structural support from the philanthropic and private sectors to create additional

affordable residential units for the local housing supply.

Rev. Vaughn III also emphasized the church’s longstanding commitment to serving the Logan Heights community since 1889. “Bethel stands strong in our mission and commitment to helping underserved members of the community, and we consider housing for veterans and seniors experiencing homelessness part of that mission. This project also strengthens our Church’s financial sustainability, enabling us to continue giving back to our congregation and to the broader community.”

Us4Warriors: Supporting Military & Veteran Families in San Diego County

In 2013, a group of dedicated individuals came together with a shared vision: to uplift and support San Diego’s active-duty military, veterans, and their families. From this vision, Us4Warriors Foundation was born. Over the past decade, this award-winning 501(c)(3) charity has become a beacon of hope for the military community, positively impacting the lives of more than 62,000 individuals through its mission of providing hunger relief, employment assistance, and volunteer-led community projects. In fact, Us4Warriors’ Warrior Volunteer Force of a collective of over 5,000 volunteers throughout the years has supported community service efforts from hosting food projects, employment support, building repairs, veteran art therapy, veteran writers support, children’s holiday events and many others to fill in the gaps and help warriors live stronger lives.

At the core of Us4Warriors’ efforts is the Food4Warriors program, which has been a leading force in combating food insecurity among San Diego’s military community since its inception. San Diego County is home to the largest concentration of military and veterans in the country, with a population that reaches 1.2 million when including families. However, the high cost of living in the region has left many of these families struggling to make ends meet, with San Diego ranking as one of the cities with the highest cost of living increases in the world.

Recognizing the urgent need for support, Us4Warriors Co-founder and Executive Director Tony Stewart has been a vocal advocate for addressing the challenges faced by military, veterans, and their families. In 2020, Us4Warriors was mentioned in testimony at a Congressional Hearing as a leader in supporting those in need. Two years later, Stewart was invited to provide insight via testimony at a Congressional Hearing on “Veterans Hunger,” where he highlighted key points for governmental agencies and communities to better support the cause with testimony that was shared across the country.

The Food4Warriors program operates through a multi-faceted approach, ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most. Each month, the Us4Warriors team travels to San Diego County venues to host two food distributions, providing groceries and basic needs items to thousands of individuals each year. The organization also makes monthly deliveries of dietary-approved groceries and care boxes to county clinics and outreach locations of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, being there for veterans identified with food insecurity, severe conditions, and economic distress. This effort is part of the local VA’s Food Empowerment Program in which Us4Warriors has been the exclusive food provider since 2016.

For those in need of immediate assistance, Us4Warriors hosts the Pantry4Warriors “Safe

Pantry Pick-up” appointments weekly. This program was a lifeline for many during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been a solid resource in the subsequent years of economic hardship. Additionally, the organization hosts several special events throughout the year which ensure that challenged families receive special food and items during holidays and homeless outreach events. Thousands of Care4Warriors boxes of ready to use food, hygiene items and other resources have uplifted many during moments of need.

The impact of Us4Warriors’ efforts extends far beyond the immediate relief provided by the Food4Warriors program. By focusing on the economically disadvantaged, homeless, elderly, disabled, and families with children, the organization is helping to break the cycle of poverty and food insecurity that plagues many military families. Through these efforts, Us4Warriors serves as a San Diego County Live Well partner and a Co-Champion on the San Diego Veterans Coalition of over 160 organizations in the San Diego County area serving on the Family Life Advocacy Group (FLAG) to help collaborate and channel resources to support this cause.

To sustain these critical programs, Us4Warriors relies on the generosity of the community and the tireless efforts of its staff and volunteers. The upcoming Golf4Warriors 10th Annual Battle Bogey Tournament, set for March 29th at Chula Vista Golf Course, is a prime example of how the organization raises funds to support its mission. Now in its 10th year, the tournament brings together supporters from across the region to enjoy a day of golf while making a difference in the lives of San Diego’s military families while competing for the coveted Manny Otero Memorial Cup, named for one of the founding fathers of Us4Warriors who established the tournament but was passed away in 2018.

Applying Stewart’s ten-year mantra of “a rising tide lifts all boats,” Us4Warriors has become a force multiplier for good, working closely with the U.S. Department of Veterans

Affairs, California National Guard, and numerous military commands throughout San Diego. Us4Warriors leadership has served in veteran advisory roles with County of San Diego and City of Chula Vista as well as support of organizations such as the organization’s legacy partner, San Diego District 22 of The American Legion, and local Fleet Reserve Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, as well as the strong partnership of the South Coast District 1120 of the Benevolent Order of the Elks and the California Veterans Home of Chula Vista among others. Through these collaborations, Us4Warriors has been able to amplify its voice and maximize its impact, ensuring that the needs of the military community remain at the forefront of the conversation.

As San Diego continues to grapple with the challenges of the ongoing impact of the post pandemic environment and economic hardships of living in one of the highest cost of living areas on record, the work of Us4Warriors has never been more critical. With San Diego reaching global notoriety as one of the fastest cost of living areas among global cities per the 2022 Worldwide Cost of Living Report by the Economic Intelligence Unit, the organization’s unwavering commitment to uplifting the military and veteran community serves as an inspiring example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to support those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Looking ahead, Us4Warriors remains dedicated to its mission of helping warriors and their families live stronger lives. It’s Spring, Maybe The Best Time Of The Year

Ilove Spring, I think it may be my favorite season of the year. The rainy part of the year is mostly behind us, the clock has just sprung forward, and the days seem to feel just right from sunrise to sunset – just long enough to really enjoy the day. For me, that means the shows start at sunset, and you come out of a great show to a glorious night, early enough to hit a night spot with friends and bring the evening to a perfect ending. So, without further ado, let me share with you some of the perfect evenings that will happen this month.

Located in Balboa Park, for 76 years, The San Diego Junior Theatre has been one of the premier places where children of all ages and skill levels can attend to learn and hone their craft to go on to a higher level to achieve their dreams. Several years ago, I wrote a column about soccer Mon’s and Dad’s, and how they might want to consider becoming performing arts Mom’s and Dad’s, if so, SDJT is one of those places where you might want to visit. Unfortunately, SDJT doesn’t get the recognition they rightly deserve. Their current offering, Puffs, however, has received some of the most significant buzz in the theatre community this month. Puffs has a little magic to it. For seven years, a certain Boy Wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs, who just happened to be there, too. The play focuses on the underdog, often overlooked and underestimated students known as the Puffs. Yet, as the story unfolds, their true strength and courage shine through, proving that bravery comes in all shapes and sizes. Set against a backdrop of spells, potions, and magical creatures, Puffs is a comedic and inspiring tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. Filled with uproarious humor and poignant storytelling, you will be delighted at the heartfelt journey of these lovable misfits as they navigate challenges, forge unlikely friendships, and discover the true meaning of loyalty and self-worth. Puffs closes on March 17th, so you only have this weekend to see it unless a spell is cast, and it’s extended. Adult tickets are just $20 bucks…so don’t miss it!

City Ballet of San Diego is back on the stage this month with a program exclusively of firsts. Geoffrey Gonzalez premieres his new ballet, An American in Paris. Elizabeth Wistrich premieres her new ballet, Boléro – The Awakening. And City Ballet adds their first Christopher Wheeldon ballet to their repertoire, Morphoses. First up is The World Premiere of An American In Paris Inspired by the story of American fashion designer Claire McCardell, a young lady, alone, arrives off a ship to find herself in blossoming Paris. Her dream was to design fashion for American women, inspired by the Chanel luxury fashion house in the early 1960s. Choreography by Geoffrey Gonzalez (2024), Music by George Gershwin’s An American in Paris (1928). Next up is the World Premiere of Boléro – The Awakening. Bolero explores the ways the heart reacts to different emotions expressed through dance. Choreography by Elizabeth Wistrich (2024), from the music by Maurice Ravel’s Boléro (1928). As if two World Premieres are not enough, we also have The San Diego Premiere of Morphoses, Choreography by Christopher Wheeldon (2002) set to György Ligeti’s String Quartet No. 1 (Métamorphoses nocturnes) (1953-1954). With Morphoses, City Ballet will add its first Christopher Wheeldon ballet to its repertoire. Morphoses is a complex, athletic ballet for four dancers that is an ideal introduction to Wheeldon, with influences from George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, Jerome Robbins, and Kenneth MacMillan. American In Paris will be performed on March 16th and 17th at the Balboa Theatre and on Wednesday, March 27th at the Escondido Center for the Performing Arts.

This month, The Old Globe brings us a pair of shows. King James, written by Rajiv Joseph and directed by Justin Emeka, is now playing through the 31st in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. The breathtaking career of NBA icon LeBron James is the backdrop for this energetic and funny play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, couldn’t be more different—except for their love of the Cleveland

Cavaliers. The friendship between them, at turns contentious and compassionate, becomes something as enduring and profound as James’s legacy. Interwoven with moments of camaraderie, laughter, and poignancy, King James dives into the heart of basketball fandom and highlights the profound connections that sports can cultivate. This production includes strong language and mature themes.

Opening on March 30 is the American premiere of Ride, on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage with Book, music, and lyrics by Freya Catrin Smith and Jack Williams and Directed by Sarah Meadows. Ready, set, ride! The smash-hit London musical makes its U.S. premiere. It’s 1895, and Annie Londonderry wants to discover if a woman can ride a bicycle around the world. The problem? She’s only ridden one twice! As Annie and her unwitting secretary Martha, share unbelievable adventures across four continents, they learn that no matter how far we ride, our past is always right behind us. With a high-energy score and a wildly versatile cast, this fresh and funny show is what Theatre Weekly called “an amazing piece of theatre and a must-watch for everyone.” This production includes strong language. Ride rolls through April 28th

The North Coast Rep is keeping the laughs rolling with Molière’s Tartuffe. Translated into English verse by Richard Wilbur and Directed by Richard Baird. Molière’s Tartuffe is acknowledged as one of the most enduring comedic masterpieces in the theatrical canon, is given an astonishingly clever translation by two-time Pulitzer Prize poet Richard Wilbur. The charlatan Tartuffe worms his way into a wealthy family, causing disruption and pandemonium. With wicked precision and brilliantly rhyming verses, this highly satiric comedy skewers religious hypocrisy, duplicity, lust, and self-inflicted chaos. Lovers of classic theatre and ingenious wordplay will not want to miss this inventively entertaining evening. This exciting take on a classic is not to be missed! Due to demand, Tartuffe has been extended to April 10th.

One of the hottest tickets in town playing right now is Redwood at The La Jolla Playhouse. Broadway icon Idina Menzel makes her La Jolla Playhouse debut in the world premiere of Redwood, a one-of-a-kind theatrical event about one woman’s journey into the precious and precarious world of the redwoods. Idina plays Jesse, a successful businesswoman, mother and wife. She seems to have it all, but inside, her heart is broken. Finding herself at a turning point, Jesse leaves everyone and everything behind, gets in her car and drives… and drives. Thousands of miles later, she hits the ancient forests of Northern California, where a chance meeting and a leap of faith changed her life forever. In the presence of the magnificent, towering redwoods, Jesse finds strange and powerful connections, an unexpected sense of community, and a chance at healing. Acclaimed writer and director Tina Landau (Beauty) brings this immersive and cinematic new work to life with lush visuals and a soaring score from Kate Diaz. You will travel with Jesse into an intoxicating environment of dense greenery, fractured light and dizzying heights – a place where nature can help us heal, if only we don’t destroy her first. Redwood is with us until March 31st.

I’ve seen it -- and it is fun!! Ladies And Gentleman, Boys and Girls, Children of ALL ages! Circus Vargas, The Big One is Back! for another epic adventure under the big top for 2024 and something amazing is in the works!! More laughs, more thrills, and more priceless memories for all and it’s always a fun night at the circus. So See Circus Vargas Now! Circus Vargas makes it’s last San Diego stop in Mission Valley starting on the 15th and has been extended through April 8th.

I love spring because it has longer days and warm, dry nights. No matter what part of the county you live in, there will be something right around the corner for you—something for the family and something just for your date night. Pick something and go have your perfect evening.

For fans of classic country music, it doesn’t get better than Kimmi Bitter. Inspired by the sounds of 1960s artists, Bitter has crafted music that touches on the past, but still has a modern feel, with great harmonies, melodies and song hooks. It’s a winning combination that saw her take home the trophy for “Best Country or Americana Artist” at the 2023 San Diego Music Awards. On April 5, she celebrates the release of her second album, Old School , with a special show at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside.

Originally from San Jose, Bitter moved to San Diego when she was thirteen, “and just going into high school,” she said. “I’m a Californian native. Oceanside is where I consider my home, and the majority of my life has been there. But I was born in San Jose and lived there until 8th grade.”

Her inspiration to be a musician came early. “I wanted to be a singer-songwriter since I first found out adults had to get jobs,” Bitter said good-naturedly. Another San Diego singer-songwriter served as her early motivation. “(Being a musician) was always what I aspired to become,” she commented. “I wanted to be like Jewel in elementary school. I asked for a guitar for my 3rd grade Christmas gift but could not figure out how to teach myself at such a young age. These were pre-internet days. I didn’t re-pick it up again until I was 18 and forced myself to play every day until I figured it out. I started off with immense stage fright and didn’t do my first performance until I was 22 years old, but I’ve been performing ever since then.”

How did the album title Old School come about? “I wasn’t sure what the album was going to be called until my producer Mike Gurley and I co-wrote the song, “Old School,” together,” Bitter said. “It’s a song simply about my obsession with old-school music and since the album is a collection of my favorite sounds and styles from 1960s country, it just made sense to make that song the anthem of the album.”

What is she happiest about with the album? “I’m happy that it doesn’t sound like what’s currently mainstream, yet has a familiar feeling,” Bitter said. Her favorite song on the album is “Aquamarine.” “We almost didn’t record it, but threw it in last minute on a whim,” Bitter commented. “And I just found out it was nominated for “Song of the Year” at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards. It captures exactly the vibe I was hoping to accomplish on that particular song: a sailor’s paradise set in the early sixties.”

Nowadays, Bitter’s inspiration comes from almost solely artists and bands of the 1960s. “I have new obsessions each year, this year is Nancy Sinatra, Connie Francis, and the Beach Boys,” she said. “The last couple of years was an extreme obsession with Patsy Cline, Elvis, and Wanda Jackson.”

What inspired her love of 1960s-era country music? “Patsy Cline with the Jordanaires songs,” Bitter said. “They’re just so incred -

ibly good. Everyone loves Patsy Cline, whether you’re a country fan or not. You don’t hear those kinds of thought-out harmonies and song structures anymore. That was “pop” music then. I don’t know how we went so astray. To me, music peaked then. I’m hyper-obsessed with the art of the 1960s. I’m constantly studying it, from the recording sounds, to the fashion styles, to the color grading of film and photography from that era.”

How did it feel to win an SDMA in 2023? “It was such an honor and a total hometown milestone for me,” Bitter said. “I remember the first SDMA show I went to, about 10ish years ago. I was so green and had such intense stage fright, that the thought of being a nominee seemed so far out of reach. But it was a goal of mine. When I found out I was a nominee for two of the categories in 2023, I honestly didn’t think I would win because I was a bit out of touch with the San Diego scene and had spent the majority of the previous year’s vagabonding it on the road.” In fact, Bitter’s win provided one of the event’s highlights, as captured in the awards show’s TV broadcast. “I was strolling in late and heard my name over the speakers when I was in the parking lot. I ran to the stage completely out of breath and had no idea what to say. However, the award sits proudly on my piano in my bedroom.”

Hopefully, Old School will score another nomination for Bitter in 2025, but in the meantime, she will be touring extensively this

year, with Old School ’s release event set for April 5 at Oceanside’s Sunshine Brooks Theatre. “I’m super excited to have this show in my most favorite town of all the towns, my hometown,” she said. “And at such an iconic venue that I have seen my whole life growing up in Oceanside.”

What’s Bitter’s favorite thing about being a musician? “So many things,” she said. “I love performing and creating. You’re always creating, and it’s not just always music that you’re creating. It’s the poster designs, the flow of the set, the branding, the stage outfits, the video content, the songwriting, the merch.... It’s just a whole bunch of creating. It’s constant stimulus, adventure, and change and that’s what my soul craves.” She points out that there’s an infinite amount of growth being a musician. “It’s hard work but you get back what you put in,” Bitter said. “There’s no limit. In a corporate world, you can work your way up a ladder and eventually become vice president or something, but that’s the cap. With music and being your own boss, you can always push the boundaries and reset your goals to be what’s uncharted, even if it’s just personal accomplishments.” With her sophomore album just about to be released, Bitter is already looking ahead. “You can infinitely get better and there’s really no end,” she said. “It’s such a challenge to “make it” with music and I’m addicted to the challenge.”

Josh Weinstein / Mind The Gap

One of the hardest working musicians in San Diego, it’s a rare evening when keyboardist Josh Weinstein isn’t making music. Perhaps best known for his work with such combos as Jeff Berkley and the Banned, The Johnny Vernazza Band, Carry The Stone and The King Taylor Project, Weinstein recently released his fourth solo album, Mind The Gap. It’s an eclectic group of songs highlighted by a soulful ballad, “Unmaking Love.” He’ll be performing the album in full at Campus Jax on April 9.

Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Weinstein arrived in San Diego circa 2009. “I moved here to attend a PhD program in music. It’s been almost 15 years now, and I can’t imagine not being part of the musical community in San Diego. All my friends are musicians!”

How did he come up with the title, Mind the Gap? “After I recorded all the basics for my 2009 album, Love & Alcohol, which had a different title already lined up, I ended up writing a song called “Mind the Gap,” that I figured I’d have to stick on whatever my “next” album after this would be. But one day I played that song in a featured set and said, “That would be a pretty good name for this album, huh?” and thought I was making a passing joke, but pretty quickly I realized that yes, it sure as hell would. So I worked up a recorded version of the tune and it became the title track to the current album.”

What sets this album apart from his previous releases? “I think this is the most “if I don’t make this album, I will explode” of my releases,” he said. “The others had some sense of “functionality” to them. A songwriter has to release albums and get X placement or Y new reviews or whatever. This one was a primal scream. It comprises the years before, during, and after my divorce, plus

all the existential torture of the COVID years, plus a BIG chunk of life passing that brings my kids closer to adulthood and me closer to the end of the ride. I literally feared for my mental health if I did not get this record out and unblock the creative highway, which I’d let stagnate for way, way, way too long.”

Weinstein is happiest, artistically, with the uncompromising-ness of this record. “My fingers shaped every step of this album, from songwriting to arranging to editing to co-producing to running sessions at my house to arranging strings to creating synth patches to incorporating “found sound” samples, to laying out and designing the accompanying poetry companion, and so on.” It was a time-consuming process. “I held on to the tracks for two years after the basic sessions and pushed each track to the place I felt it really wanted to live. That was two years of some real struggle and obsession, and I found myself on the other side with a feeling I don’t usually get or recognize, which is pride. I feel good about the album and my choices, and grateful for people’s participation, and even if it doesn’t go as “far” in the market as my previous ones, it’s exactly the record I had ever hoped to make

Top 5 Concerts

March 25 - Swami & The Bed of Nails / The Casbah, Little Italy

It’s a John Reis fronted group, so you know it’s going to be a great night of high-energy rock and roll. That The Loons are opening takes this concert over the top. PS The Loons have a new single just out, “High and Lonesome (Like Jim-

and more. I’m proud of my perseverance and conviction in making it happen.”

With so many projects in motion, how does Weinstein keep track of it all? “I am a congregant in the church of Google Calendar–it’s my life,” he joked. “I keep no schedule information in my head; for me it’s a recipe for disaster. GCal is the app in the “first” position on my phone, and if you ask me what I’m doing in 45 minutes, I will need to check my calendar to know the answer to that. It’s literally the outsource for about 40% of my brain space. I have long-running color-coding and other customs that have basically become part of my psyche by now, and if the terrorists ever take GCal down, they are going to find me wandering around like a zombie on acid.”

Outside of his own sessions, does he have a favorite recording he’s worked on? “I swear I am not just saying this: every session I work on is my favorite, just like every gig I play is my favorite gig,” Weinstein said. “Getting to play a session or make music is everything I’ve ever wanted to do. When I listened

my Reed Said).”

April 6 - The Highwayman Show / Sunshine Brooks Theater, Oceanside

Performed by Tony Suraci and his All-Star Band, featuring Makayla Phillips, the Highwayman Show celebrates classic Outlaw Country music, with a setlist full of sing-a-long favorites from the likes of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Two shows 4 p.m. & 8 p.m.

April 13 – Pete Escovedo / Music Box, Little Italy

After nearly seven decades on the road, iconic percussionist Pete Escovedo will perform his farewell concert on April 13 at the Music Box. He’s had an amazing career, starting off with Mongo Santamaria, he’s also known for his work with the likes of Cal Tjader, his daughter Shiela E and especially, Santana. Fans of Latin

to music as a child, I was aware that records were made by people who played instruments, and that that was a job, and that that was the job I wanted. I would literally listen to how the piano player played to have a sense of what piano players do in sessions. So, it’s very hard to find any downside to getting to do the exact thing you would be doing if you could choose anything in the world. I never want sessions to end; I’d play all night if someone wanted. It’s my happy place.”

With so many recording and live projects behind him and even more ahead, Weinstein is happy with his life immersed in music. “Making music is a superpower,” he said. “You are controlling time and decorating the atmosphere. You’re having a “conversation” with others that creates this third thing that didn’t exist without you in that moment, and it turns out the “thing” is the very thing you’ve loved and been obsessed with your whole life.” He considers that “all my friends are musicians; all my ways of understanding are funneled in one way or another through music. It’s actually pretty amazing: all day long, I am either playing music, teaching things to others, or hanging with my kids. That means that every minute of every day I am doing the things I’d most want to be doing with that time, for money or otherwise. I can’t imagine a luckier life.”

https://joshweinstein.com

rhythms, music history or just plain old great music won’t want to miss this very special event.

April 16 – Kate Clover / Soda Bar, City Heights

Los Angeles based garage punk with plenty of Brill Building melody. Clover is touring in advance of her new album, The Apocalypse Dream, due out next month. Latest single, “Damage Control,” showcases Clover’s knack for a solid song hook. It’s quite an earworm.

April 17 – Jeff Berkley & Friends / The Belly Up Tavern, Encinitas

Anyone who enjoys modern-day Americana won’t want to miss this show, taking place at the Belly Up Tavern on April 17. On hand will be Jeff Berkley and the Banned, Dead Rock West, Kimmi Bitter, and Jerry Raney, four of Southern California’s top talents. Berkley is a multiple SDMA winner, including 2023 Artist of the Year, while Bitter took home that year’s trophy for Best Country or Americana Artist. Meanwhile, Jerry Raney is a Grammy feted, legendary rocker, perhaps best known for his tenure in The Beat Farmers. It’s going to be quite the party!

Big Stir Records / New Music Showcase

There’s been a bit of a renaissance taking place with new indie labels over the past few years, with a number in Southern California starting to have a significant impact. At the top of any music fans list would be Burbank-based Big Stir Records. Helmed by Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko, the label started out in 2018 with releases by Karla Kane (The Corner Laughers) and Micheal Simmons (Popdudes), going on to work with the likes of Graham Parker, Tony Valentino of The Standells and the Sorrows, amongst many others.

What was the inspiration for Big Stir’s founding? “In a word, “community,” Broome said. “Christina and I had been hosting a concert series under the name “Big Stir” in LA, and word had gotten around about it internationally to the point where it had accidentally become what’s known in the biz as a “brand.” A lot of the bands and artists we knew tended to self-release their records and tag a label name onto them to give it a little heft, and we started talking about the idea that if we all shared a label name it would mean we could all support each other that much more and help each other out in all kinds of other ways.” In a sense, the label was originally just going to be a name with no real infrastructure or central hub, “but Christina and I are the kind of people who can’t do anything halfway, so Big Stir Records became a real label way more quickly than we ever expected.”

Bulbenko concurs. “I guess you could say that we were trying to fill a void in L.A. with “Big Stir Live.” She said. “We called it a ‘monthly concert series’ rather than a ‘showcase’ because we were hoping it would grow into a popular guitar pop scene where people knew that if they came for the show every month, they would be in for an enjoyable and eclectic four hours of live music.” The label was an organic offshoot of the brand to further foster the community “in a ‘stronger together’ mutually supportive mentality,” Bulbenko continued. “Recording technology and streaming distribution became pretty much available and accessible to anyone with a desire to put a song or 100 out into the world, and rising above the fray was becoming impossible for the unsigned indie band or artist. We decided to carry the torch for that reason... stronger together... more support, and more visibility.”

Does the label have a distinct sound? “We talk about this all the time, that our dream has always been for the label to have a “sound” all its own,” Broome said. “The legendary indie

labels, and even some of the really respected majors, all have that: you hear something and rather than say a genre, you say “oh, that has that 4AD or SST or Asylum vibe”. It’s a lofty goal in the modern age when so much indie music is stratified by genre, but we aim high, and some folks have told us they do see us that way –which is our very favorite thing to hear!” He considers the label’s musical outlook to be expansive. “We navigate by instinct, though, and we do it like artists, not business tacticians,” Broome commented. “I always think, none of the amazing songwriters we know only like one genre or era, they always have these fascinatingly left-field influences, and we feel like the label should be the same. There’s a through-line of melody, harmony, guitars, and –this is such a key thing –inventive songwriting, but in many ways, it’s easier to say what’s not within the BSR sound than what is, because there’s a lot of variety in what we put out.” Bulbenko considers that ‘variety’ to be one of the label’s strengths. “I always go back to when our friend, Robbie Rist, was trying to put his finger on that. He said something to the effect of: “It’s not exactly power pop because it’s on the fringes and pretty diverse... but all of it just sort of scratches the itch”. It’s an abstract description but that visceral instinct is what drives us and eventually we hope we hear someone someday

describe a song or an album by saying that it has that ‘Big Stir’ sound, quality, or vibe to it.”

In addition to promoting new artists, BSR is now home to many established performers. How did you approach artists like the Sorrows or Graham Parker? “Both of them (and all of the others you’re probably thinking of) came to us,” Broome said good-naturedly. “We’ve never really chased anyone or set our sights on a particular artist. Sometimes Christina asks me who would be our dream signing, and I have no answer –there are hundreds of artists I would love to see on BSR, but it doesn’t seem likely we’d ever have the chance. Until, as with Graham, Sorrows, The Cyrkle, The Jack Rubies and so many more of whom we were fans long before we started the labels, that chance just suddenly manifests itself.”

Bulbenko points out that “Arthur Alexander of Sorrows is a dear friend that actually lives nearby. And, as The Armoires, we’ve shared the stage with him and his Arthur Alexander band several times. If Sorrows or Poppees fans haven’t discovered Arthur Alexander’s solo work yet, they don’t know what a great experience they’re missing!” Meanwhile, Graham Parker took notice of the label on Twitter (X) and “just liked our vibe. We were so completely honored, a bit terrified of not being able to do right by him according to his standards and experiences, but also just so damned excited! Everything that’s happened along the way on our journey has unfolded organically. We were at the right place at the right time or someone contacted us at the right time, someone delayed a release and made room for someone else to join the roster... things like that.”

What’s next for the label? “This year we seem to be dipping into all kinds

of eras and regions,” Broome said. “We have the first album from ‘60s legends The Cyrkle in over half a century, followed by a great vinyl compilation saluting the ‘90s Hollywood geek rock scene (think early Weezer) curated and accompanied by a book by S.W. Lauden. Then there’s a new and ambitious album from Manchester England’s long-running garage-psych band The Speed Of Sound, followed by the label debut for Vermont-based indie-folk/ chamber pop duo Hungrytown. And after that, there are some really stunning releases from some familiar faces from our home state of California, longtime mainstays of the Big Stir roster.” Look for new music from the likes of Sorrows, sparkle*jets u.k., Blake Jones & The Trike Shop, The HalfCubes (one half of The Flashcubes) and Ohio’s Librarians With Hickeys, as well as Bulbenko and Broome’s own group, The Armoires. “There’s always so much going on. These days we are always scheduled with a full slate for at least a year in advance!” Broome said. www.bigstirrecords.com
