arlier this month I found myself grinning from ear to ear.

It has been the best part of a year since I pulled up the layout for our What’s On guides, and set about creating a spread of editorial to let our readers know about all of the days out, live events and theatre productions taking place in the area each month.

It’s yet another welcome sign that we’re returning to some semblance of normality, as is the reopening of our local restaurants, pubs and hotels.

Speaking of which, for this edition we very much enjoyed our recent visit to the really very good Orbis of Oakham; a great place to enjoy dining with worldwide influences.

If the idea of staying local this summer appeals – and it should – you’ll love our Getaway Guide with glamping, holiday lodges, motorhomes for hire and other ingenious ideas for days out and staycations this summer.

Summer holidays necessitate a good book to read whilst you’re putting your feet up. Sir Alan Duncan, former MP for Rutland & Melton, has just published his political memoirs and to say they’re a phenomenally good read is a huge understatement... as you’ll discover later in this edition!

We’re also paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh through the talents of Henry Dawe, who has written and recorded a charity single celebrating the life of HRH The Prince Philip.

Elsewhere, we’ve pick-your-own strawberries, a stunning open garden in Barrowden and we’re visiting a local vineyard to enjoy English Wine Week.

Filming underway at Burghley...

BRUCE WAYNE MOVES INTO BURGHLEY FOR FILMING OF NEW BATMAN FILM STAMFORD “Holy retro superhero franchise, Batman!”

Now Robin, there’s no need for exclamatives.

Speculation is rife over the role that Burghley House will play in a forthcoming film franchise that Warner Bros is currently producing.

The DC Comics superhero franchise’s next film is The Flash, which sees that superhero and Batman working together to fight crime.

Actor Michael Keaton has already been confirmed for the role of Batman in the film, so it’s likely that The Flash will visit Batman at Burghley House (AKA Wayne Manor) to second him into a mission.

We’ll reveal more in future editions of Pride, so stay tuned... same bat-time, same bat-channel.

Elsewhere, it’s also thought that Burghley House will also be used as Windsor Castle in

series five of The Crown, which will be set in the 1990s.

Burghley House’s Heaven Room stood in admirably for Windsor Castle in the last series, so it’s a good bet that it will reprise its role in series five, which will be shown in 2022. Whilst Burghley may be set to return, though, some of the actors from the previous series won’t be back. Every couple of series, the cast is refreshed to reflect the different era in which the drama is set.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was portrayed by Claire Foy in the first two series and by Olivia Colman in series three and four.

Oakham’s new canal group NEW CHARITY AIMS TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY IN CARING FOR OAKHAM CANAL AREA...

OAKHAM A new charity has been set up to help upgrade and promote the footpaths and environment around the old Oakham Canal.

The area was created in the 1700s but closed after less than 50 years use, with the emergence of the railways.

The canal connects to the Melton Mowbray navigation and a new Oakham Canal Green Corridor Project has been created and has gained charitable status in order to upgrade footpaths and to provide access to around 2.5 miles of green space adjacent to the canal.

“The Oakham Canal is a vital part of our local heritage, and provides a number of diverse habitats in a very small area, says the charity’s Paul Dadford. “Lots of people use the area but have had to watch much of it deteriorate through neglect and a lack of co-ordinated action to maintain it. Establishing a new green corridor will be a positive move for wildlife, local people and visitors alike.” n Public involvement in the canal’s maintenance and development is welcome, see the charity’s website at www.oakhamcanal.org.

PETERBOROUGH On the day on which his latest book, The White Ship, is released in paperback, Charles Spencer will take up its themes in an online talk for Peterborough Cathedral.

The White Ship charts a defining moment in English history when, in 1120, Henry I’s ship was destroyed, drowning Henry’s son and heir William in the process. Earl Spencer’s talk will take place at 4pm on Thursday 10th June, via Zoom.

The event will be followed by questions from the audience.

How to buy well in a tough market Kate Vincent from Garrington property finders describes some of the difficulties homebuyers are experiencing looking for their next property and suggests ways buyers can improve their chances of buying effectively in this challenging market.

Ever since the first shoots of spring started to sprout and the prospect of release from lockdown became a reality, the housing market has leapt into action. At Garrington we are hearing daily stories of buyers’ frustration – many struggling to find what they are looking for, those who are missing out to other purchasers and a fair few feeling fearful of the repercussions of the ambitious prices being demanded by sellers – and often being paid.

Despite the picture painted above, the cards are not all stacked in sellers’ favour. It’s good to remember that whilst achieving the highest price is one of the top priorities for most sellers, other factors do come into play and these can be explored by buyers to increase their chances of buying well.

We are often asked if it a sellers or buyers’ market and the truth of the matter is that at this moment, it is largely the former. So, how do you buy well in these turbulent times?

Here are a few top tips if you are struggling to buy in the housing market in and around Rutland and Stamford: Become an attractive buyer Extreme competition in the market and a continuing shortage of stock means that quality properties launched onto the market are receiving considerable attention. As such, some selling agents have moved into a gatekeeper role, often restricting requests to view a property based on a perception of the ‘quality’ of the buyer. There are no hard and fast rules but if your current home is not on

the market then don’t be surprised if agents are not giving you the time that you probably feel that you deserve. Whilst moving into a rental property may not really appeal, the additional upheaval may well be worth it if you are aspiring to buy well and are willing to adopt a longer term strategy to put you in the best position. Cash buyers will often trump those who need financing but ultimately it is a combination of factors so, ticking off as many as is possible will allow you to become an attractive buyer.

Do your homework The descriptions of properties online have largely improved in quality and include far more detail in recent times and it is important for buyers to digest these before arranging a viewing. However, the smart buyer also researches the information that isn’t usually included in the agent’s particulars.

Good broadband connectivity, mobile reception and an educated assessment of the asking price in the context of other similar recently sold properties are all essential factors to consider before viewing a property.

It can often be worth doing a ‘drive by’ if you’re local to check out the immediate area and the outlook of the property.

Selling agents are very busy at the moment and value buyers who’ve done their homework. Of course, you may decide having viewed a property that you simply don’t like it but discounting it because, for example, there aren’t enough bedrooms, is frustrating for agents because the information is readily available online. Perceived time wasters may

not get a look in when the next property is launched, and are unlikely to get a call about pre-market opportunities.

Don’t get carried away by the competition Doing your homework, putting yourself in the best position and knowing what you are willing to spend, will help you to resist the pressure from other buyers and where they exist, inflated asking prices. As a long-term investment or for a particularly special property, you may decide to pay a premium price but at least that is your choice, made with your eyes wide open.

n A Little Bit of Rough: A little bit of roughing it, surrounded by a lot of quirky luxury! These are four canvas lodges owned by Sarah Jackson near the town of Uppingham.

“We even attract visitors who live in either Uppingham and Oakham, or Stamford.

They don’t travel far to stay here but actually that’s part of the appeal. We’ve had lots of enquiries from people reuniting with family and friends seeking somewhere local, quirky and fun for their reunions!”

Intriguingly, Sarah keeps the exact location of the site secret, which adds to the charm.

Once you arrive though, you’ll find woodfired hot tubs and pizza ovens, hammocks galore and even roll-top baths for an ‘under the stars’ bathing experience.

There are ‘proper’ bathrooms, fairy lights, and outdoor firepits where guests can sit on adjacent logs to tell ghost stories or sing songs together over a bottle of wine. Comfy beds have lots of chunky throws and pillows... it’s all ridiculously stylish and comfy!

“We’re seeing significantly increased demand at this stage in the season, with guests keen to secure their preferred dates. We enjoy really high demand during more normal times and have had record bookings year on year. n Spirit of Freedom: “Everyone should be able to enjoy this!” said Adam Brookes. His usual job in the hospitality industry was temporarily paused amid Covid, so instead he used the time to convert his van into a motorhome. The opportunity arose to work on a friend’s Wiltshire farm and Adam took the van down there.

“I opened the door in the morning, looked out at the scenery and thought ‘this is fantastic, everyone should be able to enjoy this!’”

It was the eureka moment which led him to launch Spirit of Freedom, which now has three motorhomes and three VW vans for hire.

Pride of the fleet are Meg and Rosie, both around seven metres long, and both with automatic gearboxes, reverse cameras, air conditioning and power steering... they’ll manage 46 to the gallon and are, says Adam, a cinch to drive; “You acclimatise to the driving experience within just five minutes!”

But driving, of course, isn’t the point.

Meg and Rosie will sleep six people, with a king-size bed in a rear U-shaped banquette, plus a small double up front and an electric drop-down bed towards the dinette. There’s also a full-size shower room and a separate WC, plus hot water and good water pressure. The galley also features a fridge, freezer, hob, oven and sink.

“You can collect a vehicle from us or we’ll drop it off,” says Adam. “And we’re providing Covid-safe handovers. We usually hire them for seven day trips although subject to availability we have long-weekend breaks too.”

“We wave off our customers as they head for an adventure... to the Yorkshire Dales, to the Peak District, to The Lakes or to Cornwall. HENRY’S TRIBUTE TO PRINCE PHILIP

A Tribute In Song for

THE DUKE Rutland writer and performer, Henry Dawe, has produced a charity fundraising song in tribute to HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. ‘Two Paces Back’ was originally intended to mark the 100th birthday of the Duke on 10th June, but has been adapted to become a celebration of the life of an extraordinary man following the announcement of his death last month...

LOYAL, DUTIFUL AND SELFLESS. Those are some of the qualities which one local man has praised in a music video paying tribute to The Duke of Edinburgh.

Henry Dawe, of Uppingham, sat down one year ago to write a set of lyrics for a song to mark His Royal Highness’s 100th birthday.

Having secured a licence for images and footage for his music video, Henry was making preparations for the release of the song in late May when the sad news of The Duke of Edinburgh’s death broke on 9th April.

He therefore revised the lyrics to be a celebration of life, rather than a birthday song. Entitled ‘Two Paces Back’, the song was always intended to reflect the unwavering support which The Queen had received from her husband for so long.

“This has been a very fulfilling project, and I have been lucky to work on it with some wonderful collaborators,” says Henry.

Born in Nottingham, Henry grew up in Uppingham and attended Stamford School.

“It was a superb school in all respects, not least in its provision for drama and music.”

“I performed in The Comedy of Errors at the age of 13, which then encouraged me to take on larger roles with Uppingham Theatre Company, such as playing the Winslow boy in Terence Rattigan’s famous play in 1998.”

Upon leaving school in 2001, Henry read French and German at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, as part of a four-year long course.

It was during his time there that, at the 2005 Honorary Degrees Ceremony, Henry served as Page to The Duke of Edinburgh, Chancellor of the University between 1976 and 2011, meeting the man about whom he would later write a tribute. Henry’s studies afforded him the opportunity to teach in an adult education centre in France as part of his degree.

After graduating he headed to Germany, working first for a translation firm in Cologne and then at a school in Bonn, Stamford’s partner school. >>

Upon returning to England, he pursued a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with a view to teaching, but in the end decided against pursuing it as a career.

Having already worked at the summer opening of Buckingham Palace between his return from Germany and his teaching course, Henry went back to the Royal Household and took on a full-time role with the Royal Collection, working first for the summer opening again and later as an Administrator based at St James’s Palace.

He had no dealings with the members of the Royal Family but, through working within the Royal Household, was nonetheless able to see how strongly committed they were to their duties.

“In 1997 The Queen said of her husband in her Golden Wedding Anniversary speech that, ‘He is someone who doesn’t take easily to compliments but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.’”

“Those have always been seen as profound words and, of course, so true. Following the death of this remarkable man, many people have said to me that they had no idea just how great a difference he made in so many fields over the course of his long, full and varied life.”

“When I began to research the institutions to which His Royal Highness was connected, I discovered that there were

nearly 1,000 of them, including The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, of course, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, of which he was President for fifteen years.”

Upon his return to Rutland after working at the Royal Household, Henry took a job in the Culture & Leisure department of the local authority, where he still works with great satisfaction.

He also pursued his theatrical interests, writing and acting in the one-act stage play Beyond The Pail: A Plotless Play of Puns and Pottiness, performed in 2016 by Uppingham Theatre Company at Uppingham’s Falcon Hotel and at the Leicester Comedy Festival.

He has since staged entertainments at London’s Club for Acts & Actors, published two comedy collections and joined Stamfordbased choir One A-Chord.

His experiences there encouraged him to write the lyrics for – and to sing – his own song about The Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness’s Household could not endorse a private individual’s project but informed me that I could pursue it in favour of a suitable charity. I chose The Silver Line, the national helpline for older people founded by Dame Esther Rantzen in 2012.”

“This wonderful organisation exists to serve those aged 55 and over in the UK by providing a free, confidential service, offering information, advice and friendship all day, every day.”

“It struck me that, as a beneficiary of the release of the song, no charity could be more suitable, given the struggles with loneliness and feelings of vulnerability which so many older people have faced in the pandemic.”

“So, as well as reflecting upon The Duke of Edinburgh’s life, the song aims to raise funds to enable The Silver Line to expand its work, and awareness among more older people that this incredibly valuable service is there for them whenever they need it.”

“As this is a relatively young charity, the good news that it exists has not yet reached everyone. The Silver Line cannot legally be an official partner of the project but have said that I can fundraise in aid of them. It is donations which are requested, rather than payments being made to download the song.”

“I completed the original lyrics last year shortly before The Duke of Edinburgh’s 99th birthday and asked my university friend Chris Fish, a school Head of Academic Music and a composer, to write the music.”

“The day after His Royal Highness’s death, I adapted the birthday lyrics to be a celebration of his life and re-recorded the vocals two days later.”

“However, we broadly retained the same tune. Chris and I felt that this was still in keeping with the mood which we wanted to create for a gentleman who disliked too much fuss and who would no doubt wish to be remembered with a cheerful song rather than a mournful one.”

“We knew a light-hearted touch was needed at one point, given that His Royal Highness was famous for his humour.”

“We aimed for catchy and upbeat, but with the right sprinkling of the sentimental.

I always wanted to create a video to accompany the project and was delighted to obtain excellent footage, predominantly from the archive of the Associated Press and British Movietone.”

“The stills and footage which have been incorporated into the song reflect the lyrics and help to celebrate The Duke of Edinburgh’s life and his devotion to duty.”

“I am so grateful to the collaborators who have helped me to create the music video, and now I want to ensure that as much good comes from it as possible, raising money for The Silver Line and celebrating the life of the longest-serving consort in the history of the British Monarchy.”

Rutland Property Boom | Your guide to Stamp Duty Land Tax Currently, thanks in part to the Stamp Duty Land Tax “holiday”, residential properties across the nation are selling at the fastest pace ever recorded and house prices also hit record highs in March. Rutland is no exception to this property boom, with Rightmove reporting an overall average price of £380,736 for properties in Rutland over the past year and, sold prices in Rutland increasing 13% from the previous year.

For individuals purchasing with others, the surcharge also applies when any one of those individuals is a non-UK resident.

There are, however, some reliefs, e.g. if the non-UK resident moves to the UK to live within a year of completion, an application can be lodged at HMRC for a refund of the surcharge within 2 years of completion (N.B. to qualify for this refund other conditions must be satisfied).

Stamp Duty Land Tax

For companies, the additional surcharge will apply where one or more of the controlling owners is a non-UK resident on the completion date or, the company is not incorporated in the UK. The rules are more complex for companies and they are likely to require specific tailored advice.

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax paid by the buyer to H M Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on the purchase of a UK residential property. In 2020, the Government raised the SDLT threshold (the starting point from which SDLT liability may apply) to £500,000 for residential property purchases in England and Northern Ireland. This threshold applies until 30 June 2021 after which it will lower to £250,000 until 30 September 2021 and then, from 1 October 2021, it has been indicated that the threshold will revert to £125,000.

However, although the reduction in SDLT liabilities has helped some house buyers, those adding to their property portfolio and/or who live abroad for part of the year should be aware of the latest SDLT changes introduced on 1st April.

Rebecca Walton, a solicitor at Hegarty Solicitors, one of a team specialising in commercial property and complex residential property transactions, discusses the latest changes.

New rules for non-UK residents You must have lived in the UK for a minimum of 183 days in the 365 days immediately preceding a purchase (not necessarily consecutive days) to qualify as a UK resident. If you have not, you will not qualify and will be deemed a non-UK resident for the purposes of SDLT liability.

From 1st April 2021, non-UK residents purchasing residential properties will be subject to a further 2% surcharge when calculating SDLT.

Purchasing an ‘additional’ property A 3% surcharge is payable by all individuals who purchase a residential property which will not replace their main residence. This 3% surcharge is added to all the usual rates of SDLT duty, and therefore applies to the rates applicable during the SDLT holiday transition period.

The 3% surcharge can be reclaimed where the property is to replace the individual’s main residence if the reclaim is made within the first 36 months of completion of the purchase of the property (N.B. once again, to qualify for this refund other conditions must be satisfied).

How does SDLT apply when purchasing multiple properties?

Where six or more properties are being purchased in one transaction, the buyer can opt to pay either the non-residential rates or, opt to pay the higher rates and utilise Multiple Dwellings Relief (MDR). MDR may also be applied when purchasing a property with an annex (certain conditions must be satisfied to qualify for this relief).

Where two or more property transactions are between the same seller and buyer, they are classified as “linked transactions” and SDLT liability is calculated on the total

value of all of these linked transactions.

Connected persons within the transaction also form the link.

There is no limit to the length of time that transactions are classed as linked, e.g. purchase one house now from a developer and ten years later you buy a second, or, e.g. a parent buys a house, and their child buys the garden separately. These are still classed as linked transactions for SDLT purposes. In these cases, the total value of the transactions are added together and the difference in SDLT from the previous transaction must be paid. It may be possible to claim the MDR as a result of purchasing more than one property.

If all properties are residential, then the residential rates apply but if any or all properties are non-residential then the commercial rates apply. There may also be the higher rate surcharge of 3% that is applicable.

The SDLT rules and calculations can be complex and each transaction must be considered based on the facts specific to each purchase. IT’S A GREAT SHAME that I don’t believe in reincarnation, because I now know exactly what I’d like to come back as; Musca domestica, the common housefly.

Whilst their lifespan may be a modest 28 days, that should be just enough time to position myself on a wall in Boris Johnson’s sitting room, as he sits down with a glass of whisky and a copy of Sir Alan Duncan’s political diaries. From that vantage point, I could gleefully witness the fallout.

“I had a frank relationship with Boris, and with other frontline politicians around me,” says Sir Alan. “Our newspapers can provide an account of events, but the feeling of the time – with all its uncertainties and the lack of hindsight – can only be captured in a diary, with its capacity to reflect an unfiltered account of events, unvarnished.”

“My motivation for any criticism of anyone at the time was a government or a politician underperforming or behaving badly, so the driver of creating a diary was simply catharsis.”

“The pettiness of poor decision-making and the strutting of tiresome egos are a constant frustration for someone working in government. The only way to ‘keep calm and carry on’ was to write it all down. Using my pen or keyboard I was able to ‘rage at the page,’ to download and vent my feelings.”

a book, securing a publisher and offering some wise comments on the themes that most deserved exploration.

How did you create the final manuscript?

I began with notes and my appointment diaries, and I was also fortunate enough to have the assistance of Dr Nigel Fletcher, a Conservative political adviser from the days when the party was in opposition. He set about the task of rifling through the archive to locate original diary entries, appointment cards and correspondence, then cross-referenced these for accuracy, detail and context.

We worked with Arabella Pike and a team at HarperCollins – Arabella has a reputation for being the best in the business and she contributed not just ruthless professionalism but also fun and mischievous laughter.

Our copy editor Peter James demonstrated commendable attention to detail and his colleague Iain Hunt organised proofs, whilst Jo Thompson selected photographs and ensured they were cleared for publication from a copyright point of view.

We began with 300,000 ‘raw’ words and took out repetition – plus some things I thought were too gossipy – but also material which was deemed too sensitive. In the end we had 180,000 words, which is about 512

pages worth of finished manuscript. As a former minister, I then had to submit it to the Cabinet Office for comment.

Such publications need to adhere to The Radcliffe Report of 1976, which states that whilst a minister should be free to use their own ministerial experience to give an account of their work, publication remains subject to redacting matters pertaining to national security and international security, and to maintaining the working relationships on which our system of government is based.

This process did take some degree of negotiation, and took up considerable time, but we managed to navigate this tricky territory.

In the book’s introduction you remark with ‘cool hindsight’ that some comments might be ‘unfair or ungenerous.’

Will you have any trepidation, seeing it on the shelves, and do you fear a phone call or text from anyone in particular?

My motivation for any criticism of someone in the book was only ever frustration over bad behaviour or substandard actions when decisiveness, objectivity or responsibility were needed. If there’s one slight pang it’s reserved for Theresa May. Her premiership was a cauldron of bubbling fury and we never knew her as a Prime Minister during ‘normal service,’ only assessing her in a time of Brexit and the schism it created. >>

“Right from when I first found myself working in high level politics, it was so engaging that I decided to diligently create a diary that I could look back on in years to come.

I didn’t want to forget anything,” says Sir Alan, and takes up the story in his own words.

When did you decide to publish your diary?

I never intended to publish these diaries, but by chance I found myself working in the middle of one of the most disrupted periods of Parliament. I met, by chance, Martin Redfern of literary agency Northbank.

It was 2019 and as conversation turned to talking about working amid a unique period for UK politics, he asked if I kept any notes for an autobiography. I told him, truthfully, that I kept diaries but had no intention of publishing them.

He was suitably excited by the prospect though, and became an enthusiastic champion, helping to develop the pitch for

>> Among my contemporaries, when I studied at Oxford, were Philip May and Theresa Brasier (soon to be May). I have known Theresa for 40 years and I enthusiastically backed her leadership campaign. I earnestly hoped that she would be a success in Number 10.

As time went on my disappointment and frustration at her some of her shortcomings as a politician spill out into the diary, sometimes harshly. She was steadfast but not decisive.

She was decent, honest, hard-working. And she didn’t have an ego, but ironically that was her shortcoming; she needed more ego.

What about Boris?

Boris is a completely different matter. Much of the attention the book receives, I suspect, will focus on the unsparing criticism I level at him in its pages. People may think that this book is just another salvo in an ongoing personal vendetta.

No. The truth is that my relationship with Boris was always perfectly friendly, and whilst in the Foreign Office we did generally get on well. I came to respect his unique qualities as a politician, but I often despaired at his lack of seriousness and his refusal to apply himself properly.

But Boris is no fool. When he really focuses on a particular issue, he can be genuinely impressive but I was angered by his nakedly ambitious manoeuvrings for the leadership.

That question of loyalty to our colleague, undermining the Prime Minister, was a source of that tension between us.

It’s undeniable that he brings a rare energy and a spark to politics, but that spark too often lit a fuse and ignited an unplanned media explosion.

That personality, though, had a strength that could galvanise the nation’s character.

That’s a powerful element in his work, and it was – or still is – potentially very positive, especially as Covid-19 came to displace Brexit as the main issue for the country.

We’ve exchanged a few text messages since I left in July 2019. For instance I expressed that when Cummings went in November 2020 it was good news. I don’t think Boris will mind that I talk about him in the book.

There’s a degree of ego in play here, and I think he’d prefer being talked about – even in uncharitable terms – than to be ignored!

the legacy of Theresa May’s decision to call a General Election in June 2017. That was a decision that resulted in the government limping along with a small majority. Boris’s subsequent election reinjected authority into the party’s legitimacy, which made it possible to effect real changes and gave it the ability to be decisive once more.

The last diary entry is dated 31st January 2020. Brexit Day. And the date that the first two Covid-19 cases are reported.

Did you leave politics at the right time?

Yes, I got out at the right time. But not because of Covid-19 or Brexit. Westminster, today, is dominated by a younger and very ambitious generation of politicians. There are 24-hour news channels, there’s social media and your profile – your celebrity – is a big constituent to your success.

There’s a lot of jostling among a little group of about 30 people with lots of internal sharp elbows. It’s unseemly, and it takes the focus away from deeper thoughts and consideration of policy. Number 10 has now become a place of PR, not policy making.

How do you think Brexit has been handled?

In respect of Brexit, many expected me to be a fervent leaving. But today’s world different from 40 years ago. globalised, sophisticated.

Technological advances, too, have been staggering and countries across the globe are more linked and interdependent. Turmoil for any one country has consequences for another.

The lure of Brexit was that it would deliver for the country a tidy alternative to EU membership; that it would empower our economic prospects and that we’d be insulated in the world from global difficulties.

It would ‘solve immigration’ and ‘allow us to prosper as an economy untrammelled by others’ rules.’ The trouble is, I didn’t (and I still don’t) think that’s true.

Much has already been written about the turbulent period in UK politics prior to Brexit and the likely consequences. Perhaps my perspective in the book can offer some additional insight.

There was a rational and pragmatic case to be made for leaving the EU but few bothered to make it. Instead, we faced a huge barrage of populist nonsense, emotive plaudits and downright lies; we ended up instead with a ‘barrage of Farage.’

Brexit was seen as an article of faith instead of a diplomatic and public policy challenge, leaving no room for reasonable solutions.

Toxic stalemate was the result and even today the reconciliation – of a false prospectus with hard truth – seems further away than ever.

My despair, as I watched this play out, is evident in the book. I was in the peculiar position of being Minister for Europe, but simultaneously of having no direct role in negotiations with the EU. I was a bystander in the drama, unable to be directly involved.

And simultaneously, I was faced with the challenge of loyally supporting the government and backing the Prime Minister, Theresa May, whilst avoiding conflict with my immediate boss in the FCO, Boris Johnson, whose position as an advocate of Brexit was less than straightforward.

>> And Covid-19?

Covid-19 remains something that we have to continue to address, not just nationally but across the world. In this country, there have been both relative failures (the procurement of PPE), and successes (like the vaccination rollout, which has been very well managed).

Are you happier as a result of stepping back from politics and returning to the private sector?

I began my career in 1979 working as a trader of oil and refined products, initially for Royal Dutch Shell. If you think politics has changed between 1992 (when I left the private sector to become MP for Rutland and Melton) and today, well, the energy sector is even less recognisable.

There are some big themes in the industry, and the implications of them will reach well beyond how we fuel a car, or heat our home, or how we generate power.

I spent a good deal of time working in the commodities industry, and now those same companies are investing a huge amount in renewable energy.

The firm I work for has invested over $1bn in renewables alone, conscious that a move towards technologies like solar energy isn’t just a matter of ensuring it remains a part of the energy sector, but also in ensuring the survival of the planet itself.

There’s an economic constituent to the transition towards renewables as well.

Over the next five or 10 years we’ll be trading with countries like China, which is still building new coal-fired power stations.

It’s likely that they’ll have a ‘dirty’ but cheap manufacturing base, whilst countries favouring greener energy will offer ‘cleaner’ but more expensive manufacturing bases.

The countries we trade with, and the matter of where all the products we buy (or their components) have been manufactured, will have a global economic and environmental implication.

But companies which have historically traded in fossil fuels have already become a driving force for a future of clean energy – part of the solution, not the problem.

My own experience working in that sector – prior to politics – gave me a deep personal 44

understanding of oil trading, international relations and politics everywhere from Singapore to the Middle East. That was very useful to the country throughout my later political career. It also underwrites why it’s a good idea for MPs to come from different sectors, backgrounds and careers – and to bring that experience into politics – instead of only ever being engaged in politics.

Do you still enjoy life in Rutland?

Pets imitating politics?

During the last year I’ve spent 95% of my time here in the county. I’ve been a ‘lucky lockdowner’ living here in Rutland, not in the middle of a locked-down city. The move out of politics and back into the private sector was a deliberate step back.

There was a lot of aggro between the two.

Perhaps it was because Palmerston was defensive of his colleagues, maybe because Larry had such a strong personality?

I couldn’t say. Palmerston was popular in the FCO and enjoyed his favourite spot on a comfortable armchair in the ministerial office, well-respected by his colleagues. But in that office, there was only ever one boss.

And that’s politics for you. There’s always scope for robustness, but at some point, you’ve just got to stop growling at one another, focus on getting on and just... do what’s right.

And finally… what about the real Downing Street catfighting, between Number 10 and the FCO?

Hopefully the book gives a candidly reported, unvarnished flavour of the moment, observed first-hand and reported immediately. It was a unique and important time in our country’s history and its recording deserves that much. n

She despairs of me, does the current Mrs Davis. Her palate was honed in the not exactly exotic North East of England, and she’s not especially well-travelled.

Still, you can’t fault her open-mindedness when it comes to food. She’ll try anything, and enjoy most of it. Meanwhile my palate is a bit more conservative, leading her to tease me mercilessly when we’re perusing restaurant menus; ‘let’s see if we can find something bland for you, shall we?!?’

In fairness, I’m getting better thanks to some really good experiences with local chefs who have pushed me a little out of my comfort zone and into enlightenment. But ever so occasionally I have to retreat to the familiar; to my favourite dishes. And should I design a menu of personal favourites, it would

comprise of local asparagus, pork belly, then something with white chocolate and raspberry in it for dessert. Joy of joy, that’s exactly what this month’s dining out feature, Orbis of Oakham, served me recently.

Just on the cusp of May I took great joy in venturing out into Oakham post-lockdown for my first Rutland dining out feature in a good long while.

The local hospitality industry is currently best described as ‘cautiously optimistic,’ but Orbis of Oakham has weathered the choppy year better than most restaurants, serving up takeaway meals and, during our visit, opening up for outdoor service.

Not only that, we’re delighted to reveal that a second restaurant, Orbis Stamford, will be opening in the town as Pride goes to press.

Orbis Stamford will be on the first floor of Hoppi Dorri in the town, but the ground floor of the restaurant will remain as Hoppi Dorri following Orbis’s Jonathan Spencer taking on the building and the business.

Happily that means Jonathan will provide local diners with the pan-Asian Hoppi Dorri experience, but also the Orbis concept in Stamford and Oakham, too. >> 59

Jonathan and his excellent Head Chef Sam McDonald concede that their dishes are Anglicised to some degree, but point out that being familiar with local dining preferences and having a wealth of local ingredients around them, they’d be remiss in not tweaking traditional dishes to appeal more to their customers.

seafood, small plates of vegetable-based dishes and a couple of signature dishes too.

It’s a sort of tapas format, which allows you to choose just a dish or two if you’re grazing on the terrace over a glass of wine, or create a sort of mix-and-match dining experience to sample and to combine as many of the dishes as you please.

They also make a rather valid point that as they’re combining dishes from lots of different countries, the restaurant is already making concessions to geographical culinary precedents anyway.

And so, diners may opt for a Japanese-style Wagyu beef dish with sesame, soy and truffle, or perhaps the Gallic whole baked Camembert. There’s a spare rib dish inspired by Brazil, a Thai-inspired Sriracha chicken dish and duck breast created in the style of a Beijing fine dining restaurant.

An enjoyable facet of Orbis is the fact that instead of serving up a traditional starter course, main course and dessert, you can choose any number of small dishes, with a single simple menu divided up into sections for small plates of meat, small plates of

“This is enjoyable and sublime dining. Being free from convention clearly allows the team to provide a great dining experience...” juicy porcine gloriousness beneath... both were beautifully presented, all technically flawless.

A perfect ten would hinge on presenting a dessert which delivered, and when a pretty white chocolate and raspberry tart arrived with raspberry sorbet, a hat-trick of enjoyable excellence was complete.

This is very good quality and sublime dining, and being free from convention allows Sam, his sous Josh Betts, and Jonathan to provide a great dining experience which admittedly does its own thing... but does it so well that nobody could question it.

A word of praise, too, for the front of house team who were lovely throughout our visit and help to create a relaxed and really very cool but also professional vibe.

By the time Pride lands on doorsteps, we hope that the restaurant’s 38 covers indoors as well as its 20 outdoor covers will all be much in demand. Persist with trying to secure a booking, though, either in Oakham or in Stamford when Orbis opens there.

It’ll be a great experience and you won’t be disappointed with a dining experience that takes you right around the world. n

Susannah Ivens is inspecting (well, admiring) the strawberry crop, just before enthusiastic locals descend to pick a berry or two (or more) to smother in cream, turn into jam or enjoy with a simple sprinkle of sugar.

“We look forward to it every year,” says Susannah. “It’s hard work, but really enjoyable. How could you not enjoy being on a strawberry farm, surrounded by excited children in the middle of an English summer?”

The farm spans more than 250 acres, with much of the land given over to field beans and wheat. However, there is also 40km worth of rows dedicated to strawberries, of which 30km are pickable from this month.

The remaining 10km are newly planted (maidens) and will not be pickable until 2022.

“Strawberry plants have a three-year lifespan,” says Susannah. ‘’So, every year we remove a patch as well as planting a patch.

Our strawberries cover about four hectares, with a further 2.5 hectares for raspberries.”

“We grow about eight different varieties of strawberries – such as Christine, Florence and Malwina – which are an example of our early, mid and late season varieties, extending the eight-week season as long as possible without sacrificing quality.”

“We don’t grow in polytunnels, preferring to get the flavour and goodness from our soil.

Unfortunately, we’re on a slope and have horrible heavy clay soil in places, so the conditions don’t make it easy for us, but the strawberries taste awesome!”

By 2020 it’s though that strawberry consumption will rise to 168,000 tonnes (up 150%). n Reflecting this exponential increase, the production of soft fruit in the UK has developed significantly, from 40,100 tonnes of strawberries in 2015 to an anticipated 115,500 tonnes in 2020.

A new hi-tech glasshouse in Lincolnshire is set to grow berries for 42 weeks of the year from March until November.

Powered with renewable electricity and heat from an adjacent anaerobic digester, the giant Dyson Farming glasshouse covers six-hectares.

It is 424m long with 832 rows of strawberries, 700,000 strawberry plants and will eventually produce 750 tonnes of strawberries each year for British consumers.

Cake: 175g (6oz) strawberries, hulled • 250g (9oz) self-raising flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder 6 large eggs, separated • 125ml (4 fl oz) vegetable oil • 1 lemon, grated rind only • 225g (8oz) caster sugar Little red paste food colouring • Filling: 150g (5oz) strawberry jam • 2 tablespoons cold water • 2 teaspoons powdered gelatine 400g (14oz) strawberries, hulled • 125ml (4 fl oz) double cream • Frosting: 250g (9oz) mascarpone cheese 1 lemon, finely grated lemon rind • 2 tablespoons icing sugar • 400ml (14 fl oz) double cream • Little red paste food colouring Finally, to decorate, a few pink primula flowers and/or viola flowers, plus a few small strawberries.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, 160°C fan assisted, Gas 4. To make the cake, grease and line the bases of 2 x 20 cm (8 inch) springform tins with circles of non-stick baking paper.

Puree the strawberries then press through a sieve and discard their seeds. Mix the flour and baking powder together in a second bowl. Add the egg yolks, oil, lemon rind and 175g (6oz) of the sugar to the bowl of an electric mixer. Add the strawberry puree and a little food colouring and whisk for about 5 minutes until very thick.

2. Wash and dry the whisk then beat the egg whites until stiff moist looking peaks then gradually whisk in the remaining 50g (2oz) sugar a teaspoonful at a time until the mixture is smooth and glossy.

3. Sift the flour and baking powder over the top of the strawberry mix then gently mix in. Stir in a large spoonful of the egg whites to loosen the mixture then add the rest and very gently fold in so that you keep as much air in the mixture as possible.

4. Spoon the mixture evenly between the two tins, gently ease the tops level then bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is set, very lightly browned and a skewer comes out cleanly when inserted into the centre of each cake. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then remove the sides and leave to cool. Remove the base when cold.

5. When the cakes are cold, peel off the base paper. Cut each cake in half, then put two of the halves to one side. Keep the other two halves, still stacked then cut out a circle from the centre using a smaller 15cm (5 inch) baking tin as a template.

6. Put one of the whole circles of cake on a serving plate, spread a band of jam around the outer edge about 2.5cm (1 inch) wide then place one of the ring cakes on top. Spread the top edge with jam, then add the second cake ring.

7. Add the cold water to a small heatproof bowl, sprinkle over the gelatine, making sure that all the dry powder is absorbed by the water. Set aside for 5 minutes.

8. Pick out the best strawberries and arrange over the inside of the cake, when you know you have enough, take them out and reserve on a plate. Puree 175g (6oz) of the remaining strawberries then press through a sieve and discard the seeds.

9. Stand the bowl of gelatine in a saucepan of gently simmering water and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring from time to time until it becomes a clear liquid. Whisk the cream in a bowl until it forms soft peaks, add the strawberry puree and gradually mix in the gelatine until smooth. Spread a few spoonfuls in the base of the centre of the cake, arrange the whole strawberries on top then cover with the remaining strawberry cream. Stick the remaining cake half in place with jam around the edges as before. Chill for 4 hours.

10. About an hour or so before serving, whisk the mascarpone, lemon rind and icing sugar together in a bowl then gradually whisk in the cream until soft and spreadable. Take out one third of the frosting and divide between two small bowls, colour one pale pink, the other a deeper pink.

11. Spread a very thin layer of the uncoloured frosting all over the cake to stick the crumbs in place then spread a thicker layer all over, being more generous on the top. Spread the sides smooth with a knife. Using a teaspoon and round bladed knife, press small dots of dark pink frosting in a band around the base of the cake. Make a second paler pink band above it and a third plain band of uncoloured frosting then smooth the sides to merge the colours with a palette knife. Decorate with edible flowers and strawberries. n

STRAWBERRY RECIPES

Giant Strawberry Cookies Serves: 4-6.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes.

Cooking Time: 30 minutes.

100g oats 50g ground almonds 1/2 tsp baking powder 50g brown sugar 60g coconut oil, melted 1 egg, beaten 2 tbsp milk 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 50g dark, milk or white chocolate, chopped 125g strawberries, hulled and chopped Ice cream to serve

This is a fun sharing treat or pudding served warm with icecream. Grab a spoon and dig in!

Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas mark 4. Base line a 20cm round tin or ovenproof dish. Place the oats in a food processor and blitz to a small crumb. Add the ground almonds, baking powder and sugar and blend just to combine.

Melt the coconut oil in a pan. Remove from the heat and stir in the oat mixture with all remaining ingredients, except the strawberries.

Spread the mixture in the tin or dish, scatter over the strawberries and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and just set. Cool slightly before serving with scoops of ice cream on top for everyone to share.

Make double of these and freeze one before baking to cook later straight from the freezer - just add an extra 5 minutes cooking time. n

Strawberry & Basil

ÈCLAIRS Strawberries & Cream enjoy a delicious French reinvention!

Makes 16. Preparation Time: 30 minutes.

Cooking Time: 20 minutes.

50g (2oz) butter, 150ml (1/4 pint) water 65g (21/2oz) plain flour, sifted 2 medium eggs , ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 400g (14oz) strawberries, chopped 2 tablespoons icing sugar, plus extra sifted icing sugar to decorate 3 tablespoons fresh chopped basil leaves 300ml (1/2 pint) double cream.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan), Gas Mark 6. Lightly butter 2 baking sheets and set aside. Add the measured butter to a saucepan with the water, heat gently until the butter has melted then bring to the boil.

Take off the heat add the flour and stir together then put the pan back on the heat and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously until the mixture forms a smooth glossy ball that leaves the sides of the pan clean. Cool for 15 minutes.

Gradually beat in the eggs and vanilla, beating well after each addition until all the eggs have been added and you have a smooth thick paste. If you have a food processor or electric mixer you might like to use this to save time.

Spoon the choux pastry into a piping bag fitted with a 1cm (1/2 inch) wide plain piping tube. Pipe 7.5cm (3 inch) long éclairs, leaving space between them to rise in the oven.

Bake for 20 minutes until well risen and golden, pierce each éclair with a small knife so that the steam can escape then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Meanwhile mix the strawberries, 2 tablespoons icing sugar and basil together, cover the dish and leave at room temperature.

About 1 hour before you are ready to serve the éclairs, slit open the sides with a serrated knife. Whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks then fold in any strawberry juices. Spoon into the éclairs and top with the strawberries and basil.

Dust with sifted icing sugar and transfer to a plate and serve. n

ENGLISH WINEMAKING

I REALLY DO LOVE THE FRENCH. Their sexy sounding accordions, phallic Parisian towers, cream-laden calorific food, and their bombastically protective approach to their language – Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu weighs in at a mighty seven volumes and 4,215 pages, or 1.2m words. It all points to a nation reeking of garlic and self-confidence.

They’re a glorious diametric to the selfeffacing English.

But of all the things the French hold dear, their place in the world as a nation of viticulturists and winemakers is what they remain most well-known for, and most fiercely protective of. In the 18th century, after what seemed like a lifelong Gallic dominion over the industry, the first commercially-minded vines trickled across the Atlantic and under the soils of California’s Nappa Valley. 250-odd years later, in 1996 Australia and New Zealand’s place in the world of wine was also cemented, for instance, with the establishment of Winemakers’ Federation of Australia.

Shuffle down the supermarkets’ aisles – heaving with their mass-market plonk, shipped over in tankers and bottled here in the UK – and you’ll soon see that everyone’s having a go at making their own wine. So far, though some nations may have achieved at least a couple of favourable examples, nobody has quite made a dent in the cachet or the cultural capital that French wines and winemakers possess – particularly fizz from the appellation of Champagne.

But slowly, that’s changing, especially in respect of the monopoly that France has always had on sparkling wine. And England’s own viticulture is gradually experiencing a windfall as a result. It’s hard to find any positives in climate change; globally we’ve all come to accept that we have to temper the modern lifestyles we’ve adopted which are slowly smothering our planet, to what would ultimately be its death.

However, Les Rosbifs have observed that global warming has increased our own

country’s temperature by about 1.5°c over the past couple of decades, and that means our climate (particularly in the south of England) is now commensurate with the temperatures and conditions that were once prevalent about, oooh, 400 miles south (Empingham to Èpernay via Calais), in the Champagne region.

Not a bad stroke of luck for our region’s winemakers – albeit bittersweet, given the severity of climate change. We now have the ideal climate in which to grow the three grape varieties blended to create Champagne – Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

“My parents, Tony and Veronica Skuriat, settled in the area in the late 1960s and took on an old property with a dilapidated greenhouse in which there was a single vine that we discovered was from a cutting of the 250-year old ‘great vine’ at Hampton court palace, planted by Capability Brown.”

“A fascination with that vine led my parents to plant a vineyard, Eglantine, near Loughborough. They planted in 1979 and by 1984, they had won international awards for their wine. That was when the idea of English Wine was a novelty, though.”

Today, it’s an industry that has seen cross-channel smirks quickly turn to uncomfortable shuffles in seats as the sovereignty of the continental monopoly on the world’s quality sparkling wines has shifted to the other side of the water.

Helenka works in IT and husband William works in broadcasting, taking feeds from various broadcasting sources and outputting them to news TV channels to make sure we see the right one on our screens.

and Chardonnay – right here in the UK, and that’s why English wine is becoming absolutely brilliant.

Naturally, winemakers like Helenka Brown of the Hanwell Wine Estate are capitalising on the fact, but before the family raises a glass this summer, there’s a bit of work to be done.

“We’re actually second-generation winemakers,” says Helenka. She’s in the sunshine shortly before Easter, taking a break from mowing between the rows of vines and ensuring their canopies remain nice and neat.”

“The land is characterised by rich soil of around six point seven pH, with a 12” layer of loam and clay underneath, ideal for viticulture.”

Both are quite techie jobs, but this month they’ll be swapping computer screens for secateurs and a mower in advance of June, by which time the current spindly and sparsely covered vines will instead be lush with deep green leaves and heaving with grapes.

“They’re like triffids in June, growing really quickly. We have to keep the canopies between vines separate to ensure we can access them during harvest and we have to watch out for weeds which will compete for the soil resources.”

“My parent’s vines ripen slightly earlier but because we’re growing the three grape varieties used to create champagne we harvest in late October.”

“Each of the three varieties ripen at slightly different times, and have slightly different characteristics. Pinot Noir is supposed to be a bit of a diva, but honestly it thrives here.” >>

English Wines and Our Wine Industry... n Back in 1975, there were fewer than 300 hectares of English vines in production.

In 1985 that figure rose to around 350 hectares. By 1995 there was 750 in production, and in 2005 just under 800.

By 2015, there was 1,839 hectares and in 2019, 3,500 hectares were in production. n There are now 770 vineyards in Great Britain, around 200 of which are open to visitors.

There were 4,449 visits to UK vineyards every month in 2019, 83% of which were visitors from the UK. The UK’s largest estate is Nyetimber, which has 420 acres dedicated to viticulture. n The country also has 165 wineries, and produced 10.5m bottles in 2019 – the last year for which confirmed sales data is available. English wine has a retail value of around £82m. n 72% of wine produced in the UK is sparkling white wine.

Still white, red or rosé accounts for 28% of the market. n Across the UK, Pinot Noir accounts for 33% of all grapes planted. Chardonnay accounts for a further 32%, Pinot Meunier for 13%, Bacchus for 5% and Seyval for 2%.

Other varieties include Ortega, Reichensteiner, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Solaris, Rondo, Regent and Siegerrebe. n The top 10 counties for English wine production are Kent, Hampshire, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Dorset, Herefordshire, Devon, Somerset, and Gloucestershire.

The most up and coming region is Wales, seeing more industry growth than any other area. n The industry employs 11,071 people, full and part time. n The industry is represented

by WineGB (previously The English Vineyards’ Association, a body established in 1967.

Its hours are quite civilised too, since we harvest on sunny days and we have to wait for the sun to burn off the dew before we start work, usually at about half ten in the morning.”

“We finish harvesting by four, and once all of the grapes have been sent to the winery about 10 minutes down the road, and pressed, we treat ourselves to a glass of wine in the field which helps to remind us that the final product is all worth it! That also means that from vine to press takes just a few hours, ensuring each of our wines are made from a very fresh harvest.”

“We’ve a team of around 10, and though our day jobs might be completely different, we all become pickers when it’s harvest time.

Knowing when it’s the right time to begin harvesting is a matter of picking, tasting and testing the grapes with a refractometer, which tests sugar content by passing light through a prism.”

“We harvest by hand, it’s a case of snipping off each bunch of grapes and putting them gently into a bucket which empty into picking boxes for transfer to the winery, in batches of about 350kg.”

“That quantity is, by happy coincidence, roughly the same amount that the pick up truck can transport and that the press can hold.”

“We whole-bunch press, meaning everything goes straight in, stalks and all.

The press gently squeezes the grapes, the highest quality juice runs off first, this is used to make sparkling wine.”

“A higher pressure is then applied and that juice runs to a second tank to make still wine. Pretty much everything about wine production is nuanced right down to the pressure you use to harvest the juice.”

“By making fine adjustments to the press you can actually determine which part of the grape the juice is obtained from.”

“A lower pressure pressing takes the juice from around the pip, and is preferred for sparkling wine, whilst a firmer press provides the juice for still wines.” >>

Tony blends juice from each of the three Hanwell grown grapes – Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay prior to a first fermentation over winter.

Through a combination of wild yeasts, the three grape varieties that the vineyard grows each have a sufficient amount of natural yeast on the outside of the grape to avoid the necessity of adding additional yeast during the first fermentation, after which a cuvée or assemblage is produced.

The second fermentation is a characteristic of the méthode champenoise which sees the wine bottled and aged on the lees prior to its yeast being self-digested (a process known as autolysis).

Finally, the removal or disgorgement of the remaining lees results in a sparkling wine which is Champagne in all but name – since, by law, that wine-making region is geographically protected.

By UK rule, a ‘quality’ English sparkling wine must have rested on the lees for a minimum of nine months but Helenka and William’s wines are typically between three and five years in the making. >>

And that gives you a good excuse to continue your education in person with a visit to the vineyard.

“We offer tours and tastings, which are popular with around 3,000 people each year,” says Helenka. “We’re already receiving a number of bookings this year, because understandably, people are keen to be able to go out once again, to feel the sun on their back and a gentle breeze, to enjoy pretty scenery and big blue skies. That’s exactly what we can offer and we top it all off with a tutored wine tasting.”

“Many people drink wine and perhaps understand a few things they’ve picked up along the way, but there are so many experts with such strong opinions, and winemaking is a mix of science, art and nature. It’s a hugely complex subject. That’s why a visit in person can help you to see first-hand exactly what goes into wine – figuratively and literally.”

“It’s a way to enjoy good wine in a relaxed and informal way, adding an extra dimension to the pleasure. The tours are also available as gift vouchers, which is a much nicer gift than just handing over a friend of family member a bottle… why not go a little further and give them a fuller experience?”

“We have a few craft workshops on site as well and each year we try to combine artisan crafts with wine. Our flagship event, the Handmade Craft and Wine Fayre, takes place on 30th May, which used to coincides with English Wine Week, although that has now become a larger national event which takes place from 19th June.”

“We also have a wine shop – a physical one and one that’s online, providing national delivery – in which we sell our own wines, currently these include a Dry Rosé called First Love, and Rainbow’s Reward, our 2016 vintage quality sparkling wine.”

As a much smaller island we’re limited by the quantity of land available for the viticulture, as much as we’ve been limited by climate in previous years. But now, we’re no longer limited by the weather or by a lack of knowledgeable winemakers like Tony, and Helenka & William, each of whom is investing in England’s winemaking future.

Other countries are producing wine in huge quantities. Italy is the most prolific wine producing nation, with an output of 4.25m litres.

France, Spain, the US and Australia are the next largest producers, in that order, and the top five nations collectively account for about 14m litres of world production. A world average per country is 481,000 litres.

England, meanwhile, produced 10.5m bottles in 2019 still ahead of those plucky grapefettlers in Tajikistan or Syria, who each produce just 100 litres each. But this isn’t about quantity. It’s about quality and provenance.

A visit to the Hanwell Estate allows you to enhance further the pleasure you derive from wine. It will also yield the opportunity this summer to enjoy what the industry is slowly acknowledging are world-beatingly great products! We’ll definitely raise a glass to that. n

RUTLAND AND STAMFORD GARDENS

EARLIER IN THIS EDITION, we met Helenka & William Brown, taking on (arguably beating) our continental contemporaries at their own game, producing world-class sparkling wines just half an hour from the traditional English market towns of Oakham and Uppingham.

Meanwhile, Sue Moffitt’s five acre Rutland garden takes Patrick & Sylvie Quibel’s world-renowned Rouen based garden, Le Jardin Plume, near Normandy, as its inspiration.

Sue and husband Richard arrived in Rutland from the opposite direction, from East Lothian.

That was over 18 years ago.

Having also built their dream home on the site, which was completed 10 years ago, Sue has spent much of her time in Rutland establishing her business, which has seen her working as a garden designer for over 15 years – latterly in partnership with brother-in-law, David Moffitt – as M360 design.

“We work on projects both locally and nationally, producing masterplans and planting schemes but also overseeing the building and planting-up of our designs. Our own garden has been a huge source of pleasure though, it’s a project which has more evolved over time.”

“The whole family have been at home and have been more involved in the garden this year.

During lockdown we planted many new trees along the drive creating an arboretum.” >>

IN THE GARDEN IN JUNE...

Jobs to complete and a guide to planting in the summer months n Look after your lawn: Just because it’s ‘not that long,’ don’t leave the lawnmower alone. Trim your grass little and often, and water it in shade to ensure lush summer turf. n Roses: Deadhead your roses after they have flowered to encourage the plant to send out new shoots. n Bulbs: Lift tulip bulbs out of the ground and store them away, fill gaps in borders with pots of lilies for instant colour. n Good soil hygiene: On cloudier or cooler days, grab a fork and dig in some manure or leaf mulch to give your soil a nutritional boost. n Growing your own herbs: Pick and sow herbs either in pots in your terraces or the kitchen windowsill.

You can also cut lavender for drying and grow tomatoes in growbags plus salad leaves for delicious and light summer lunches. n Show some support: Support tall-growing perennials with frames, canes and twines. n Baskets and containers: Check and water baskets and containers each day and use liquid fertiliser once a week. n Mulching around shrubs: It’s a good idea to dig in some mulch around perennials, trees and shrubs then cut away dead foliage on perennials and ornamental grasses to keep them looking neat. n Grow the tallest sunflower: Encourage children to get their growing going. Who can grow the tallest sunflower?

Challenge them to find out! n Enjoy the garden: It might sound a little glib to state that enjoying your garden is a tip. But in fact, if you’re working on the garden all the time, rather than admiring your handiwork, you’re less likely to observe the spaces that look pretty and work well. Sit back, enjoy a G&T and subject your garden to a rigorous ‘perpendicular assessment!’

“I had the chance to visit Sue’s beautiful gardens at Redhill Lodge on two previous occasions and was already enthralled before the lovely offer of a sculptural commission was suggested!” says Jane Hindmarch, the Stamford artist who has created a brand new sculpture due to be unveiled at Redhill Lodge this month.

“I was captivated by so many areas and particularly by the prairie gardens. The tall waving plants and grasses combined with the simple clean geometric shapes of the beds seem the perfect combination and the peaceful space at the centre where the square pool reflects the grasses and the sky above is quietly dramatic.”

“My work is based in natural form and my research for the sculpture began by exploring plant forms and leaf shapes, then moving on to the less elaborate and more compact, structures of seeds in tall, vertical formats.”

“The tall structure of five spheres in an ascending row give height for the piece to rise out of the planting area of the prairie garden offering a silhouette against the sky and above the hedge behind, creating a point at the centre of that side of the garden. It will be extended through it’s reflection in the surface of the pool.”

“Being constructed of four intersecting planes it will catch the sun as the light changes throughout the day giving a strong three-dimensional presence at any time of day.” n See www.janehindmarchart.com.

“At the top is the viewing mound and prairie garden, especially suited to the windy conditions. Adjacent to this we created a formal grid style layout with yew hedges and Prunus Shurifogen (late flowering cherries).”

“Planting in each bed is wild and informal with grasses and late-season perennials.

From the top of the mound there’s a spectacular view of the Harringworth Viaduct – the largest brick-built viaduct in Europe.”

“The prairie garden also overlooks a super looking rill incorporating several sculptures.

These include slate sculptures in the garden

by Scottish Sculptor James Parker and we have two new sculptures being placed in the garden in May by local artist Jane Hindmarch. Fabricated from Corten steel, the two sculptures are known as Concurrent Orbs Ascending and will complement one another.”

On the opposite side of the garden is an arbor of climbing roses leading towards an area of walled garden, beyond which, in the more sheltered space just below the house, is a natural swimming pond surrounded by water gardens.

A new Japanese-style stroll garden is also planned around the pond as Sue’s next project.

Over the past year, Sue and David have made quite a number of changes to Redhill Lodge, and have managed to ensure its position – as one of the best looking gardens in Rutland – endures.

The whole site has been 18 years in the making and serves as a superb showcase for Sue & David’s garden design. Happily, in addition to the twilight NGS opening, Sue also anticipates they will open during daylight hours, with summer opening dates to be confirmed as Pride goes to press... day or night though, it’s certainly worth a visit! n Redhill Lodge in Barrowden is the garden of Sue & Richard Moffitt and David Moffitt.

A Garden Party This month we’re telling the story of Eleanor and Alex whose plan to marry was up-skittled but gave way to a day that turned out to be better than the couple could ever have imagined…

WHAT’S THAT PHRASE? ‘God laughs when men make plans.’ Eleanor and Alex had what they thought was the perfect wedding planned, but those plans needed a rethink.

Happily, there’s another pertinent phrase… ‘it all works out for the best.’

“I don’t know why we didn’t think of it first!” says Eleanor. “I’d driven past Barnsdale Gardens on a number of occasions, but never considered it as a wedding venue.

When Covid meant we had to rethink our plans, we ended up with a wedding that was so perfect, that in retrospect we wouldn’t have changed a thing!”

Alex joined the British Army and took up a post within the infantry. A three-year posting to Cyprus meant that suddenly the two friends weren’t just around the corner from one another anymore. That proved quite the lightbulb moment… introducing yet another popular phrase, for it was rather a case of ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder.’

“We spoke every day until finally we realised that we wanted to be together. Unusually, Alex was then offered the chance to attend Sandhurst, passing out after a year’s training in August 2019; I was really proud as a

We liked the idea of Oakham Castle as a venue for the ceremony, and back at school we had our prom at the William Cecil in Stamford so we thought that those two places would make a nice combination.”

“As I’m from Rutland and Alex is from Stamford, we also thought that would tie to two places together nicely. Instead, though, Covid happened and we had to rethink if we were to keep our date – which we both agreed we’d retain, as it’s also close to our anniversary.”

The couple now live in Dorset, with Alex posted at Blandford and Eleanor a technical advisor for Farrow & Ball. However, the two hope to return to the area soon. Raised in Rutland, Eleanor was born in Melton but grew up in Oakham, Ashwell and Empingham. Alex, meanwhile, grew up in Stamford.

The two attended Casterton School where their eyes met over a sketch book during an art class one day, leading to a close friendship.

“There was always a sort of feeling that there could be something more there, but we never quite dared to make the leap from friends to girlfriend and boyfriend. I think we were both worried that we might ruin our friendship.”

“After our ceremony we had a socially distanced garden party for the 15 of us in my mother’s garden in Empingham.

The buffet and cake were provided by Rosie at Stamford Kitchen, and we hired a 5ft bell tent and so slept in the garden as a sort of minimoon!”

“We’ve not been able to have a honeymoon, but we’ve travelled together already so that’s not too much of a concern. Someone suggested that when we do go on honeymoon it should be to the Greek island of Rhodes: ‘the Roads go to Rhodes.’ We’ll see!”

“The day might not have been as we first envisaged, but with the people we love, a beautiful setting and some wonderful suppliers, honestly, we couldn’t imagine how we could have changed a thing to enjoy it any more. It really was perfect!” n 106

I LOVE SHARING MY PASSION FOR HEALTH, nutrition, plants and plant medicine with you, so I’m thrilled that so many of you have asked about how to eat enough fibre to support the gut. It’s made me realise that what I now do, intuitively, and alongside my coaching is actually very new to a lot of you, so here I’m breaking it all down.

If you’re struggling with digestive issues, thinking that post 40 you have to put up with weight gain, mood swings and the worst aspects of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or menopause, this is for you!

your blood sugar due to the way they break down in the body. You can add anything green too; spinach is a favourite but consider celery, kale, cucumber etc.

I also love adding a special vitamin-enriched plant-based protein powder to my smoothies to ensure I’m also getting a balance of vitamins and minerals too. It also helps to create a feeling of satiety, so I’m not hungry an hour or two after my smoothie; I find a fruit smoothie alone can do this to me.

For me it all started with an elimination plan that helped me to heal my gut, get on top of my digestive issues and feel like myself again. One of the things I recommend the most for a healthy gut is introducing fibre rich prebiotics and probiotics into your diet.

For lunch, you might make a homemade vegetable or chicken and vegetable soup with a different mix of vegetables. Supper could be a chicken and pepper tray bake, a roast with all the trimmings or one of my favourites a country vegetable cottage pie.

I’m sharing the recipe opposite as it’s super delicious.

These can come from foods as well as supplements and having a balance of both is a great way to support your digestive system.

But how do you eat enough fruits and veg?

I recommend that we eat 30 different fruits, vegetables and herbs each week.

By eating this way, you can add various fruits and veg into your diet each day and over a week achieve a mixture of 30 different varieties. Don’t forget things like ginger, garlic and herbs – fresh or dried – as these count too.

For me that’s achieved by adding fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables into everyday meals. Let’s face it, nobody ever became less healthy by eating one more vegetable during each meal!

See how easy it is to eat 30 different varieties; a mixed berry smoothies can feature redcurrants, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and spinach.

So, what does a standard day look like? Fruit and veg smoothie for breakfast. If you start your day with a smoothie rather than a wheat-based cereal with milk it’s easy to add a variety of fruits and vegetables.

I usually opt for a mixed berry smoothie, since berries tend to have a lower impact on

For a vegetable soup, you can incorporate carrot, courgette, green beans, onion, celery, tomatoes, garlic, sweet potato, parsnip, swede, chard, spring greens, broccoli etc.

For a tray bake I recommend Sweet potato, red pepper, yellow pepper, thyme, rosemary, lemon, courgette, carrot, celeriac, mushrooms. n

Good for Guts

Country Veg Cottage Pie Recipe...

Ingredients: 10g dried porcini mushrooms, 2 large leeks; 4 large carrots; 500g swede or parsnip; 500g celeriac; olive oil; 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary; 1 teaspoon cumin seeds; 2kg potatoes or sweet potatoes peeled and chopped; 50ml coconut milk or cream; 1 onion 1 teaspoon Marmite (or gluten-free yeast extract e.g.: Meridian); 3 tablespoons tomato purée 1 x 250g pack of cooked lentils (or use dried and cook before you start) In a blender, cover the porcini with 600ml of boiling water and allow to sit for 20 mins. Slice the leeks into 2cm thick rounds and roughly chop the carrots, swede, celeriac or whatever root veg you are using.

Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large casserole pan, add the rosemary and fry for a minute to crisp up. Remove to a plate and set aside. Add the cumin seeds and veg to the flavoured oil and cook for 20 minutes, stirring regularly so the veg doesn’t catch and burn.

Cook the potatoes in boiling water for 15 minutes, or until soft. Drain and mash adding 50ml coconut cream or coconut milk (ideally from a can).

Mash together and season to taste.

Preheat the oven to 190ºC/375ºF/gas five. Quarter the onion, add to the porcini in the blender along with the Marmite and tomato purée and whizz until smooth. Pour into the veg pan and cook for 20 minutes, or until dark and caramelised, stirring regularly and scraping up any sticky bits from the bottom of the pan.

Tip the lentils (juices and all) into the veg pan, and add 200ml water If needed). Bring to the boil, then season to taste. You’re now ready to top with the potato. Spoon over the mash, place on a tray, bake for 30 minutes, or until lightly golden and bubbling at the edges, then sprinkle over the crispy rosemary. WHAT’S IN A

NAME If there’s a car with a better name, we’ve yet to hear it.

“What do you drive?” she asked, with a coy smile.

“A Lister Knobbly!” I replied, with a confident shrug.

Daft name maybe, but this beast is absolutely magnificent, and it’s made not too far from Stamford, either!

REMEMBER THAT OLD JONNY CASH SONG, A Boy Named Sue? The protagonist’s absent father so named his eponymous lad, so that in loco parentis his deliberately provocative name would give him the strength of character to toughen up to the world.

If motoring has an equivalent of Sue, it’s the Lister Knobbly. Odd name, but my goodness, it’s a right lovely car; bursting with style thanks to its hand-built body and with a crackling soundtrack courtesy of a 3.8 litre six-cylinder Jaguar-designed engine.

Best of all, this isn’t some classic car with a few miles on the clock. Nor has it been rebuilt from a donor car. It’s not a third party replica, or a copy. It’s a new car created by its existing owner using the very

same jigs from which Listers’ 1950s vehicles were made, just over the border at the firm’s factory in Cambridgeshire.

But unlike previous vehicles – which have been built only for the racecourse – the Knobbly is now available for the first time as a road-legal car too, with the company ensuring eligibility for Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA), following customer demand.

Knobbly it may be, but the Lister is also lean and light. Weighing about 900kg, it’s about 200kg lighter than a Ford Fiesta. It also packs over 330bhp under the bonnet despite its lack of weight, ensuring that its power-toweight ratio is better than a Porsche 911 GT3. With less bulk to move and a 3.8 engine to propel it, little wonder it feels fast! >>

The Lister Three: Local firm also fettles a trio of Jaguars...

Lister Stealth, £109,950: It’s official... the Lister Stealth is the fastest and most powerful British SUV! Fettled by Lister, it’s based on the already dynamic Jaguar F-Pace, but with a 22% increase in torque and upgraded dual superchargers. Other improvements include carbon fibre exterior trim and uprated brakes.

It beats the Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin Vantage and Mclaren 570GT in a drag race, and will enable five to travel in comfort as you exploit some of its 666bhp and 88nm torque. 60mph is reached in 3.6 seconds! n

Lister SUV-E, £125,000 (est): Lister’s electric SUV concept hasn’t been released... yet. However, the firm has tested the water with sample specs and interest is very strong indeed. Jaguar hasn’t (yet) created a sports version of the I-Pace either, but it can’t be far off, and would probably be badged SVR. In the meantime, this version of Jaguar’s first solely electric car has been upgraded with a liberal smothering of carbon fibre, titanium wheels, a more aggressive body kit and 100kg of weight-saving measures. Buyers will be able to specify ‘any paint colour they want,’ plus one of 60 colours of leather. 60mph? Just four seconds. n

>> Engines are built using entirely new parts around an original-specification Jaguar block, assembled by experts from Crosthwaite & Gardiner. Despite the ‘old school’ technology, the engine is still capable of an impressive 330bhp – enough to power the Knobbly to 181mph and accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.3 seconds.

The tubular chassis is made from seamless engineering tubes using the original jigs, and all welds are pressure tested to ensure integrity. The aluminium body panels alone take around 500 hours to beat into the Knobbly’s distinctive shape.

Lister LFT-666 (AKA: Thunder), £139,950: 666bhp has provided this Lister version of Jaguar’s F-Type coupé or convertible with its moniker, though we prefer its prototype name; Thunder. The firm have taken a supercharged V8 Jaguar F-Type and created a lighter, more aerodynamic vehicle. Suspension, superchargers, engine management systems and intercoolers – plus a number of other parts – have been tuned, and the result is all that horsepower, plus 770nm torque, 60mph is reached in 3.2 seconds, track-day speed is 208mph. n

And speaking of specification... there’s little to speak about. Standard equipment extends to a rear view mirror and a steering wheel... though we’d opt for a rather smart looking retro polished wood steering wheel.

ABS? Air conditioning? Electric windows, massaging seats and fragrance dispenser?

You’ll perhaps want to look elsewhere.

What you will enjoy though, in lieu of radars and sensors, is heard-turning looks, retro style and absolute uniqueness.

If you’re a little squeamish about the idea of embarking on a fully unique Lister model, though, or you’re unconvinced of the merits of a roofless two-seater sports car for a weekly supermarket schlep, you’ll be happy to know Lister also engineers vehicles from Jaguar.

However, there’s nothing like the Knobbly on the road, and whilst £300,000 is a frightful amount to invest in a ‘something for the weekend’ car, one has to ask... what else would you rather be seen in this summer?

Instead of one of those Terrain Response dials, you’ll find a stubby little lever to shift from high-range to low-range gears and to lock diffs before you lock horns.

LAST MONTH IN PRIDE we featured quite a controversial Land Rover Defender. Brand new, with lots of technology, a V8 engine... and a six-figure price tag. It’s a Land Rover with an existential crisis: can something so modern and comfortable also be worthy of a name which reflects utilitarianism and ruggedness?

Additional all-terrain kit includes a front winch, multi-point expedition cage, roof rack, underbody protection, A-bar, raised air intake, LED spotlights and specialist mud-terrain tyres. Exterior style has been enhanced with a unique Eastnor Yellow paint colour with matching 16-inch steel wheels and a heritage grill. Inside you won’t find the new Defender’s Pivi-Pro infotainment system, nor its 360° camera, and sorry but the steering wheel isn’t heated, you pampered things.

We reckon that the new Defender is every bit as worthy as its forebears in terms of its capability, and it’s certainly more civilised.

But it’s also crying out for a cheaper model to satisfy a more professional user base – farmers, the military and utility companies – for whom the new model is a bit too posh.

There are also those who just prefer the style of the old model, and for them, this might be the answer... albeit with a caveat.

This car is produced by Land Rover, so it’s officially an authentic Defender. It’s also a special edition based on the rugged Camel Trophy Expedition tour, which took place between 1980 and 2000, so you know it’s tough and ready for a challenge.

Unfortunately, this is still not the holy grail of Land Rovers; a cheap Defender you can chuck a hay bale into. Available in threedoor 90 or five-door 110 versions, prices start at an eye-watering £195,000.

It’s also quite pricy to run too, with the same 5.0V8 Land Rover engine in the new Defender flagship, generating 405ps and 515nm torque. To handle all that grunt, the car also has an upgraded ZF-sourced eight speed automatic transmission.

Land Rover Classic’s own Infotainment System – with integrated navigation – also features, complete with mobile device connectivity.

What price authenticity? Apparently, just shy of £200,000. If you really want to own the last of the great Defenders though, this is the one to have, and in fairness, that huge price tag can be (slightly) justified by the fact that it’ll inevitably appreciate in value, especially as just 25 examples will be made.

Would we rather have the new Defender?

Probably, and with a plug-in hybrid engine, not a V8... but are we tempted by a good old Trophy edition Defender? Oh gosh, yes! n 125

Finally, a good replacement for Land Rover’s Defender?

ATAE Farmers, utility companies and those who work and play in the countryside have yearned for a home grown back-tobasics 4x4 since the demise of the Defender. Now, Scottish company ATAE (All Terrain All Electric) think they might have the answer. The Munro Mk1 might not be a looker but it has a simple ladder chassis, permanent all wheel drive, locking diffs, low range gears and chunky tyres.

It’s all electric, with a range of 150 miles, and will go on sale this summer, we hope, for £25,000-ish. n

CITROËN Remember the Citroën DS? It was a fabulous car, but one whose success the company has never quite managed to replicate since.

The GS, XM and C5 never quite captured the magic of the 1950s déesse - literally goddess.

Undeterred though, this is the latest attempt at a big French car, with plug-in hybrid power and a luxury interior. Prices range from £41,000 to £50,000, and the DS9 boasts all of the bells and whistles, from Drive Assist to automatic parking.

However, history tells us that large French cars depreciate horribly, lets hope that this won’t prove to be the DS9’s Waterloo! n

WHITE VAN MAN IS NOW ‘FLAT WHITE MAN’ SAYS VOLKSWAGEN COMMERCIALS

White van man’s traditional beverage has been tea with milk and four sugars... but now, white van man is more likely to be ‘flat white (with oat milk) man...’ according to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, who surveyed 1,000 van drivers across the UK. The results reveal that tradesmen and women across the UK now favour posh coffee over a basic brew while ‘on the tools,’ says Claire English, Head of Fleet at Volkswagen’s Commercial Vehicles division.

Van drivers aren’t just becoming more discerning with their choice of tea or coffee, either, with almost one in five opting for an alternative milk, such as oat, almond, soy or coconut. Semi-skimmed was also found to be preferable these days to full-fat milk!

EGLETON Alas, this year the birdwatching communities of Rutland & Stamford won’t be able to enjoy Birdfair (AKA ‘The Birdwatchers’ Glastonbury’), as organisers have announced that it’s cancelled due to Covid. Fortunately, an announcement of the dates for 2022’s event is due as Pride goes to press.

You can still enjoy the pursuit of self-guided birdwatching though, as Egleton and Lyndon nature reserves are adjacent to nine miles of lagoons on the western end of Rutland Water.

The sites span 1,000 acres and it is occupied by around 25,000 birds.

30 hides allow you to set up your scope or camera and enjoy not only Rutland’s ospreys – thanks to a conservation project which began in 1996 – but a wealth of other birdlife too.
