Welcome (or welcome back!) to the most dynamic, creative, and diverse learning community in the heart of our historic University campus! Preston Residential College was founded in 1995 and offers innovative opportunities to strengthen relationships between students, faculty, and the broader community. As the University’s only Residential College, we are committed to providing every student with the resources, space, and support to develop an enriching and transformative undergraduate experience. Here at Preston you will find students who excel in the classroom, lead by example, are passionate about the performing and creative arts, and are committed to service and active citizenship beyond the walls of the University. It is through our diverse community that all can embrace a deep commitment to exploring and understanding each other’s ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds. We welcome your participation in a variety of activities in our common spaces, classes, gardens, and our own unique dining hall. Preston prides itself as a small and intimate learning community in the center of a thriving urban campus. Preston boasts a dynamic support staff including our Assistant Principal, Business Manager, Area Coordinator, and highly engaged Graduate Assistant. In my role as Faculty Principal, my family and I live in the College among 228 talented and inspiring residents, and we are joined by over 20 faculty and staff associates in a series of exciting programs and events each semester. While I believe Preston is a fantastic place to live, I also believe that we all have a role in the community to make it the best campus community that we can. As we spend the year together, I want to challenge you in four different ways: First, I challenge you to make an impact. Preston has many organizations that you can join immediately. I would love to see everyone engaged in at least one of Preston’s organizations. Second, I challenge you to leave your mark. What are you passionate about? Share your passions, talent, and big ideas with us. We are here to guide you, help you grow, and encourage you to be responsible leaders around the campus. Third, I challenge you to think of yourself a leader. Preston offers opportunities to develop and hone your leadership skills. I encourage you to inspire, engage, and encourage others by taking the initiative to lead. Finally, I challenge you to get to know and to get involved with the Preston community. Take time to attend Preston’s events, stop by my office hours, and get to know the staff, your Faculty Principal, and my family. We are so excited that you are joining us for the 2018-2019 academic year at Preston Residential College! Sincerely, Dr. Lara Lomicka Anderson (Doc Lo) Preston Residential College Faculty Principal

DR. LARA LOMICKA ANDERSON Faculty Principal lomicka@mailbox.sc.edu, Room 109

ANITA POOLE Business Manager anitap@mailbox.sc.edu, Room 105

Dr. Lara Lomicka Anderson (aka “Doc Lo”) is a professor of French and Applied Linguistics. She grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where she spent her first 30 years. Majoring in French and International Business at a small liberal arts school (Grove City College), Doc Lo lived on campus for 4 years. She then completed a Masters in French at Bowling Green State University (Ohio), a second Masters at the Université François Rabelais (Tours, France), and then earned a PhD from Penn State (Second Language Acquisition and French). She arrived at the University of South Carolina in 2001, and previously served as a Preston Associate for many years.

Anita Poole is excited to serve as the Business Manager for Preston. She was born in London, England and moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with her family when she was in high school. She came to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina and Columbia became home to her. She completed her B.S. in Criminal Justice and her B.S. in Psychology from the University of South Carolina.

Doc Lo is a frequent traveler and likes to share her knowledge of technology and language learning at conferences, doing keynotes, and conducting workshops with teachers around the world. Her research focuses on language and social media, study abroad, teacher education, and reflection. Her husband Andy, and daughters Maleah (12) and Ashlyn (10) plus three kitties (Mouchette, Grayson and Maggie) live in Preston Residential College. Stop by Doc Lo’s office hours to discuss: Academics, study abroad, Graduation with Leadership Distinction, the Adopt-an-Associate program

Anita has worked in an education related area for many years. Her experiences include working as an undergraduate and graduate assistant in the College of Criminal Justice providing support to the faculty advisors; serving as a trainer in the education area for a company specializing in billing software for insurance companies; and working on the administrative side with children and teachers in an early childhood setting. She is thrilled to be back “home” at UofSC and loves working with and supporting the wonderful Preston community. Anita is married to Ryan Poole and they have three children; Aaron, Jenna (currently a UofSC student), and Nicholas. Anita and her family love spending time together and joking about who spoils Dixie (the dog) the most! Anita can help you with: Hall Government budget allocations, reimbursements, catering orders, ordering promotional items for your Preston organization, reserving a room in Preston, questions or concerns about Preston Dining

SARAH MORGAN KELLY Assistant Principal morgans@mailbox.sc.edu, Room 106

RYAN LLOYD Area Coordinator ryanlloyd@sc.edu, Room 101

Sarah Morgan Kelly is delighted to serve as Preston’s Assistant Principal since 2011! She is the former Program Advisor for Carolina Productions and Carolina After Dark, and has been at UofSC since 2008. Prior to Carolina, she served as the Assistant Director for Student Activities at Whittier College, just outside Los Angeles. Sarah earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Tampa and her Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University.

Ryan Lloyd serves as the Area Coordinator for Preston Residential College and the Carolina Men’s Community at McBryde. He completed his B.A. in Political Science with a focus on International Comparative Politics at American University and his M.Ed in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina.

When she’s not at work (which seems quite rare!), Sarah enjoys cooking, traveling, reading, live music and painting. Even though she’s originally from Florida, everyone around here insists that “Florida isn’t really the south,” so you can decide for yourself if she counts as “Southern!” Chat with Sarah about: Classes you’d like to see offered, initiatives you’d like to see in the Preston community, the Preston Mentor Program, resumes/ cover letters/thank you notes, the Preston website, anyone you know who lived in Preston 4 | UofSCHOME

Ryan has worked in four different residence life departments at institutions ranging from Marshall University to Loyola University New Orleans as well as in international roles with the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement. You can often find Ryan reminiscing about his time living abroad in Madrid, Spain, traveling the world, debating about politics, cheering on his favorite soccer (fútbol) team La Furia Roja, or hanging out with his dog Fernando. Talk to Ryan regarding: Roomate issues or concerns, your room or any common spaces (facilities), Preston Government, housing applications and processes, Preston Univeristy 101, Resident Mentors, questions about the service desk, any general concerns regarding your residential experience Leadership Team | 5

We are called Preston Residential College, rather than Preston Hall or Preston Dorm, because we are so much more than just a place to live. We are the University’s only Residential College because students live together and: · build community over food in our all-you-care-to-eat dining facility; · interact with Preston Associates (UofSC faculty and staff) at various events; · have the opportunity to take Preston-only courses; · take advantage of numerous leadership and service opportunities; and · enjoy the unique experience of having a live-in Faculty Principal! Think of it like UofSC’s version of Hogwarts! There are so many resources available to you as Preston residents! Each year we offer: · travel and research grants (research grants also available to former residents) · lots of amazing initiatives to help you build community · the chance to meet undergraduate and faculty/staff mentors · exciting trips off campus (including a trip to Morocco in March 2019!) · classes that count for Carolina Core general education requirements Preston opened its doors in 1939 as an all-male residence hall. Since then, Preston has been home to returning war vets, athletes, and campus leaders. In 1995 Preston was renovated and opened as a co-ed Residential College, primarily for Honors students. Since then, Preston has taken different directions including a focus on the arts. Our community learning focus is on building leaders and transforming the world.

ANNUAL TRADITIONS CEREAL KILLERS/SUNDAES ON SUNDAYS One Sunday evening, every other month, Cereal Killers is a great way to unwind from the stresses of class and just an awesome chance to meet people you didn't know lived in Preston Residential College. And the free cereal is always a plus! It's BOYB (bowl, that is). The companion event is Sundaes on Sundays—same idea, just with ice cream! FIRESIDE CHATS Creating a culture of learning outside of the classroom is a priority at Preston Residential College. The Fireside Chat series is an interactive way for Preston residents to learn from expert faculty, community partners, and visiting scholars on a range of topics. This interactive initiative has explored topics such as Chocolate Around the World, the FIFA World Cup, the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, Cheese Around the World, and Women in Science.

PRESTON DINING One key component of Preston Residential College is our own unique all-you-care-to-eat dining facility, affectionately referred to as PDining. The Preston meal plan will work just like everyone else’s on campus any time of day or night anywhere on campus. The only difference you’ll ever notice is if you bring a friend who doesn’t live in Preston to dinner at PDining. You’ll use just one swipe, while your guest may need to use a swipe and have to pay the difference with Carolina Cash, Meal Plan Dollars, etc. Please contact the Carolina Card office with questions. All residents are required to purchase a Preston meal plan. Students who join a fraternity or sorority will not be exempt from our meal plan. Located in on the 2nd floor of the Russell House West Wing and open Monday through Thursday (5:15pm-8:00pm) for dinner, you have the chance to build community over food, and enjoy conversation with our Preston Associates. Pop in for a quick ice cream or sit and chat for a while with someone new or one of our Associates. PDining is open only to Preston residents, Associates, and their guests from 5:15pm-7:00pm, Monday through Thursday. Residents and up to 5 guests can swipe in at the same time. Please make sure your guests swipe in at the same time as you! PDining will be open for the entire campus from 7:00pm-8:00pm. ADA access is available through the 2nd floor elevator and down the south ramp. For more information about meal plans, please visit the Carolina Dining website. Preston Residential College residents are expected to join the community for dinners and special events in PDining throughout the semester. 16 | UofSCHOME

FRIDAY EVENING DINING EXPERIENCE (FEDEX) Have you ever tried Ethiopian food? What about Indian, Chinese, Greek, Thai, French, Vietnamese or vegan food? Held one Friday each month, FEDEx takes Preston residents to different restaurants in the greater Columbia area where they can explore new cultures through food. This great event was started by Faculty Principals Ken and Margaret Perkins, and continued by Tom and Sarah Terrill, long-time Preston Associates. Today, FEDEx is coordinated by a resident volunteer. GATSBY BANQUET AND AWARDS CEREMONY The Gatsby Banquet and Awards Ceremony is Preston Residential College's traditional end-of-year banquet. Dress up for a great time including the presentation of awards, organization recognition, and a farewell to those moving on. K(NO)W MORE The K(no)w More series is a monthly dialogue series that explores different topics relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The purpose of K(no)w More is twofold– to Know More about a given topic and to encourage No More ignorance toward that subject. This event is set up in a fishbowl format where residents can ask anonymous questions that are explored in a safe space by a panel of students and expert community partners. Former discussion topics have included the LGBT* community, race and ethnicity, gender norms, relationship violence, mental health, as well as hunger and homelessness, to name a few. LEADERSHIP WEEKEND Each year, select students participate in a Leadership Weekend. Learn skills that will benefit your time in Preston and beyond! Learn about conflict resolution, delegation, marketing, and more! PJS AND PANCAKES Take a break from studying for finals and enjoy fresh-made pancakes and other yummy breakfast treats. The Preston staff and Associates love serving you brain food to help you power through the end of the semester. PJs and highly encouraged! PRESTON PALOOZA Preston Palooza is Preston Government’s end-of-year celebration for the community. This event often includes field day activities, music, food, and giveaway items to celebrate Annual Traditions | 17

PRESTON ASSOCIATES Preston Residential College is proud to call many University faculty and staff our Associates. You’ll see our Preston Associates at dinner, offering seminars and classes to Preston residents, and chatting with students regarding academic matters, hobbies, interests, and more! These committed faculty and staff also attend events with residents. To create a stronger relationship, talk to Doc Lo or Sarah Kelly about signing up for the Adopt-an-Associate program, and be matched one-on-one with a great Associate!

1. Returning residents: I know they may seem intimidating at first, but upperclassmen can be such an amazing resource for living your best life here in Preston. They’ve been here for at least a year, so they know all the tips and tricks to help you survive your first year. I highly recommend talking to them! 2. Preston Dining: You’ll quickly find that whenever you tell people on campus that you live in Preston, they will respond with “you guys have really good food,” because that is what we are known for. PDining has the best food and friendliest staff on campus. My personal favorite is dessert! 3. Study Rooms: Most people choose to go do their late-night studying at the library, which fills up VERY quickly. Luckily in Preston we have study rooms on each floor that are helpful when studying for that big exam. Skip the awkward 15 minutes wandering the library and go right down the hall to study in the comfort of your own home. 4. Kitchen: On weekends when PDining is closed, it’s so much fun to cook or bake with your friends in the Preston kitchen! It is always a blast making cookies in the middle of the night or mac-n-cheese on a random afternoon. Remember to clean up after yourself and turn off the oven when you’re done! 5. Hallways/Front Porch: Preston prides itself on the community it builds for all our residents. The easiest way to make friends is to hang out in the hallways and sit on the front porch. You’ll see that residents will always come and join you!

6. Windows: After talking to other people in residence halls, I learned that their windows don’t open all the way. Not only do ours completely open, but we also have the best views on campus, so open your windows. If you’re facing Greene Street this comes in handy when they hold concerts and other events! Remember that sticking or dropping anything outside of a window, including flags, signs, apparel and body parts is prohibited. Enjoy the fresh air, but keep everything inside. 7. Staff: Not many people can say they’ve seen their Area Coordinator lip sync to Sia, but we have! Make friends with and get to know the Preston staff by stopping by their office and chatting with them. Not only are they a helpful resource, but they are also really awesome people.

8. Organizations: Preston has an organization for everyone! They are great ways to get involved with the community, to meet new people in the building, and to build leadership skills. 9. Events: Even if you don’t join any of the Preston orgs, I encourage you to attend their events. Events are a great way to get to know residents on different halls and have fun. Also, events almost always include food, which is such a plus!

THRIVE DURING YOUR FIRST YEAR by Matthew Wiegel

You have arrived at UofSC and are about to begin one of the most important parts of your life. UofSC will be your home for the next four or so years, and there’s a lot to look forward to. However, this year is going to be a big learning experience and I have a few words of advice. Get excited! These next four or so years are going to be incredible. You are going to learn so much, make so many great memories, and experience things that will grow you as a person. Be open to new things. During the first few weeks of my first year, I quickly realized that there are too many things to do and way too little time to do all of them. College presents you with so many opportunities. This is the time of your life where you get to learn more about yourself and decide what you are passionate about. So get out there, take an interesting elective, look into that club you saw on Greene Street, and take advantage of all the many resources that this university offers. Be friendly. The first week of classes can be pretty weird. I remember looking around thinking “I don’t know any of these people,” but trust me, these unfamiliar faces will soon turn into the ones that you miss during breaks. Keep your eyes and mind open the first few days, and make an effort to meet as many new people as you can. You can thank me later. Get organized and stay organized. In the first few days of classes you will get a lot of paper with a lot of due dates. Get a calendar, take your syllabus for each class and write down every important date. This way you will know exactly when you have exams, essays, and homework coming up. I really wish I did this last year, but it’s not too late for you. Be a Gamecock. Last, but certainly not least, be passionate about your school! Go to as many sporting events as you can. They are so much fun and a great way to instill some school pride. My buddies and I went to pretty much every game we could, and not only did we get lower deck tickets for all the football games, but going to games turned out to be of my favorite things to do, and it helped Preston win the Community Cup last year.

Shield The shield in the center of our logo links Preston to its old English heritage. Our College is descended from the residential colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. By modifying the classic medieval shield, Preston is reminded that while our roots are historical, our future is uniquely our own creation. On the shield is the edifice of our building; the building’s four pillars represent the four pillars from which Preston gains its strength, while the extended stairway welcomes all those who wish to participate in Preston.

Compass The compass is symbolic of the Preston experience. Students, faculty, and staff come to Preston from every direction. Preston seeks to provide its members with strong core principles and a solid foundation upon which they can base their unique journeys through their lives, their communities, and the world. The compass helps students navigate their leadership journey throughout their time at the University of South Carolina and beyond.

You should know before Winter Break if you are invited back to Preston next year. The best way to strengthen your re-application is to be an active member of our community starting from day one! All returning students are expected to have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA in order to have their application considered. Why does Preston want residents to dine together? Preston is all about community! What better way to continue building community than over food? Hang out with friends, meet new people, and enjoy all PDining has to offer. Our residents are frequently joined by faculty and professional staff members from around campus and the greater Columbia community. Take this chance to interact with faculty and staff in a different environment over some of the best food on campus. Who are the Preston Associates? The Preston Associates are faculty and staff who have volunteered to spend time with our community. You’ll see them at Preston Dining, at events, or maybe even in the classroom! Creating relationships with faculty and staff will help you succeed in college, and we want to make it really easy for you to start interacting in a more informal way than you may be used to with teachers from high school. Introduce yourself at dinner one night and see where the conversation takes you! Can I cook in Preston? The Preston community kitchen is located on the west side of the first floor. It has a full-size refrigerator, stove and oven, microwave, and lots of pots and pans. Don’t leave food unattended while cooking, and make sure to clean up after yourself and wash all items before you leave. If you plan to keep ingredients or food in the refrigerator, please make sure to label your items and throw them out when you are done with them or when they expire. Any unlabeled food is subject to be thrown out. Please remember to turn off the oven when you are done. You cannot use hotplates or cooking devices in your room.
