PRESTON RESIDENTIAL Co,LLEGE INFORMATION The mission of Preston College is to stimulate expression and exchange, and to ensure learning· among students, faculty, and staff··by establishing a vibrant community that enhances the :yniversity of ~outh Carotina. The "residential college" concept restores human scale to the large, multidivisional university. Preston College, a community of 240 students, 40 faculty associates, several junior (graduate student) associates, and a resident faculty principal, was created on the Columbia camf)us in 1995.1t offers to those admitted by application the small college experience within a large university setting. Preston residents live in four-person suites (two rooms of two students, connected by a bathroom). Some residents are concurrently members of the South Carolina Honors College. Generally, however, Preston residents reflect the diversity of the student population as a whole. Student-faculty committees control the selection ot residents. At least fifty first-year students join returning upper-class students each year in the fall. The Preston communit}':.·has a repp.tation for friendliness, enthusiasm for student-generated activities, and beneficial student-faculty social. interaction. Members of the· College eat supper together four nights a. week· in the Preston College Dining·Room in RussellH6use, . direcUy across Greene.Street.
