Dear Preston Community, Welcome (or welcome back!) to the most dynamic, creative, and diverse learning community in the heart of our historic University campus! Preston Residential College was built in 1939 and founded as a residential college in 1995. Preston offers innovative opportunities to strengthen relationships between students, faculty, and the broader community while building leadership skills. As the university’s only residential college, we are committed to providing every student with the resources, space, and support to develop an enriching and transformative undergraduate experience.

It is through our diverse community that all can embrace a deep commitment to exploring and understanding each other’s ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds. We welcome your participation in a variety of activities in our common spaces, classes, gardens, and our own unique dining hall.

Preston prides itself as a small and intimate learning community in the center of a thriving urban campus. Preston boasts a dynamic support staff including an Assistant Principal, a Business Manager, an Area Coordinator and three highly engaged graduate students. In my role as Faculty Principal, my family and I live in Preston among 225 talented and inspiring residents, and we are joined by over 20 faculty and staff associates in a series of exciting initiatives and events each semester.

While I believe Preston is a fantastic place to live, I also believe that we all have a role in the community to make it the best campus community that we can. As we spend the year together, I want to challenge you in four different ways: First, I challenge you to make an impact. Preston has many organizations and groups. I would love to see everyone engaged in at least one of Preston’s organizations.

Second, I challenge you to leave your mark. What are you passionate about? Share your passions, talent, and big ideas with us. We are here to guide you, help you grow, and encourage you to be responsible leaders around the campus.

Third, I challenge you to think of yourself a leader. Preston offers opportunities to develop and hone your leadership skills. I encourage you to inspire, engage, and encourage others by taking the initiative to lead.

Finally, I challenge you to get to know and to get involved with the Preston community. Take time to attend Preston’s events, stop by my office hours, and get to know the staff, your faculty principal and my family.

DR. LARA LOMICKA ANDERSON Faculty Principal lomicka@mailbox.sc.edu, Preston 109 Dr. Lara Lomicka Anderson – “Doc Lo”—is a professor of French and Applied Linguistics. She grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where she spent her first 30 years. Majoring in French and International Business at a small liberal arts school (Grove City College), Dr. Lomicka lived on campus for 4 years. She then completed a Masters in French at Bowling Green State University (Ohio), a second Masters at the Université François Rabelais (Tours, France), and then earned a PhD from Penn State (Second Language Acquisition and French). She arrived at the University of South Carolina in 2001, and previously served as a Preston Associate for many years.

Dr. Lomicka is a frequent traveler and likes to share her knowledge of technology and language learning at conferences, doing keynotes, and conducting workshops with teachers around the world. Her research focuses on language and social media, study abroad, teacher education, and reflection. Her husband Andy (“Mr. Anderson” – think The Matrix, when you say it), and daughters Maleah (11) and Ashlyn (9) plus three cats (Mouchette, Grayson and Maggie) live in Preston Residential College.

SARAH MORGAN KELLY Assistant Principal morgans@mailbox.sc.edu, Preston 106 Sarah Morgan Kelly is delighted to serve as Preston’s Assistant Principal since 2011! She is the former Program Advisor for Carolina Productions and Carolina After Dark, and has been at UofSC since 2008. Prior to Carolina, she served as the Assistant Director for Student Activities at Whittier College, just outside Los Angeles. Sarah earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Tampa and her Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University.

When she’s not at work (which seems quite rare!), Sarah enjoys cooking, traveling, reading, live music and painting. Even though she’s originally from Florida, everyone around here insists that “Florida isn’t really the south,” so you can decide for yourself if she counts as “Southern!”

ANITA POOLE Business Manager anitap@mailbox.sc.edu, Preston 105 Anita Poole is excited to serve as the Business Manager for Preston. She was born in London, England and moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with her family when she was in high school. She came to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina and Columbia became home to her. She completed her B.S. in Criminal Justice and her B.S. in Psychology from the University of South Carolina.

Anita has worked in an education related area for many years. Her experiences include working as an undergraduate and graduate assistant in the College of Criminal Justice providing support to the faculty advisors; serving as a trainer in the education area for a company specializing in billing software for insurance companies; and working on the administrative side with children and teachers in an early childhood setting. She is thrilled to have returned “home” to UofSC and loves working with the wonderful Preston community. Anita is married to Ryan and they have three children; Aaron, Jenna (currently a UofSC student), and Nicholas.

Anita and her family love spending time together and joking about who spoils Dixie (the dog) the most!

RYAN LLOYD Area Coordinator ryanlloyd@sc.edu, Preston 101 Ryan Lloyd serves as the Area Coordinator for Preston Residential College and the Carolina Men’s Community at McBryde. He completed his B.A. in Political Science with a focus on International Comparative Politics at American University and his M.Ed in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina.

Ryan has worked in four different residence life departments at institutions ranging from Marshall University to Loyola University New Orleans as well as in international roles with the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement. You can often find Ryan reminiscing about his time living abroad in Madrid, Spain, traveling the world, debating about politics, or cheering on his favorite soccer (fútbol) team La Furia Roja.

SARAH VAUGHAN, Graduate Assistant, sarahmv@mailbox.sc.edu, Preston 107 Sarah Vaughan is very excited to be working in Preston while pursuing her M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs at UofSC! She is from Memphis, TN, and received her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Spanish at Elon University in North Carolina.

While at Elon, Sarah was an Orientation Leader and served as Student Coordinator for Orientation, worked in Admissions as a Tour Guide, and planned programs for transfer students. Her fondest memories include her undergraduate research project, her study abroad in Istanbul, Turkey, and her trip to Nicaragua to participate in a medical brigade. In her spare time you can catch Sarah reading, exercising, trying new recipes, enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with friends. Sarah is eager to work with all of the wonderful people in the Preston community!

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of New Haven in West Haven, CT! While she was there, Bri worked as the College of Business Experiential Education Assistant, the Student Assistant for the Office of the Provost, and was also a Foundation for Success Mentor for the First-Year Success Center! Her favorite memory from undergrad is being able to plan one of the biggest charity events on campus for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Bri has a passion for philanthropy and loves to give back to the community anyway she can. She also loves the beach, music, and Dunkin Donuts iced coffee! Bri is ready to be part of the Preston community!

During her undergraduate career, Laura was involved in many co-curricular activities; she served as both New Member Educator and Vice President of her sorority, the Student Diplomat Coordinator for Rollins’ Office of Admission, the President of an academic honor society, and President of the Greek Week Executive Board. Some of her favorite memories include studying abroad in Germany, participating in service learning trips, completing an undergraduate research project with her academic advisor, and taking frequent trips to Disney with her friends. Laura spends her free time reading (her favorite author is Neil Gaiman), cooking, and hanging out with friends. She is so excited to work with the Preston community!

WHAT IS A RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE? We are called Preston Residential College, rather than Preston Hall or Preston Dorm, because we are so much more than just a place to live. We are the University’s only residential college because students live together and: · build community over food in our all-you-care-to-eat dining facility; · interact with Preston Associates (UofSC faculty and staff) at various events; · have the opportunity to take Preston-only courses; · take advantage of numerous leadership and service opportunities; and · enjoy the unique experience of having a live-in Faculty Principal.

Think of it like UofSC’s version of Hogwarts!

There are so many resources available to you as Preston residents! Each year we offer: · travel and research grants (research grants also available to former residents) · lots of amazing programs and events to help you build community · the chance to meet undergraduate and faculty/staff mentors · exciting trips off campus (including a trip to Morocco in May 2018) · classes that count for Carolina Core Preston opened its doors in 1939 as an all-male residence hall. Since then, Preston has been home to returning war vets, athletes, and campus leaders. In 1995 Preston was renovated an opened as a co-ed Residential College, primarily for Honors students. Since then, Preston has taken different directions including a focus on the arts. Currently, we focus on cultivating leadership development and community service in our students What is a Residential College? | 7

Angelo Amore is a sophomore from Albany, NY, and is excited to be serving Preston Residential College as his first year as a Resident Mentor. As a freshman in the Honors College last year, Angelo got involved on campus by joining the University Band, and participating in intramural sports as both a player and referee. Angelo spent the summer serving as an Orientation Leader, where he may have had the chance to meet some of you! As an International Business major, Angelo plans to continue taking business courses and language courses, and hopes to travel the world for a career someday.

Mary Ashley Boykin is a sophomore, Nursing major, from Fort Mill, South Carolina. This is her second year in Preston Residential College and her first year as a Resident Mentor in the building. The Preston community has given her so much joy and she is very excited to come back this year! She was involved in the Preston a capella group, the PresTones, and is a sister in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Mary Ashley is very passionate about missions, health care and music.

In her spare time she loves spending time with her friends, doing just about anything outdoors, and helping out her community. She is looking forward to meeting you all and another wonderful year at UofSC!

Samantha Conner is excited to return to Preston Residential College for her third year, and second time as a Resident Mentor! She is a junior Sport and Entertainment Management major with a minor in International Studies. Coming 854 miles away from her home in Chicopee, Massachusetts to the University of South Carolina, Sam is excited to return to her “home away from home.” Sam has been a member of the Preston Hall Government as a wing liaison, Y-IMPACT as the Relay for Life Team Captain, and the UofSC Homecoming General Commission in Marketing and Social Media.

Previously, Sam served as an intern for the Valley Blue Sox, a local Collegiate Baseball team in New England. She hopes to continue her career in sports and eventually end up working for the International Olympic Committee.

Nick Hooks is a sophomore political science major in the College of Arts & Sciences and is from New Orleans, Louisiana.

This is Nick’s first year as a Resident Mentor and as a Preston resident and he is thrilled to be a part of the community.

On campus, Nick is a senator and the Chairman of Multicultural Affairs in the student government senate and an active member of CRU, campus ministry. During his spare time, Nick enjoys spending time with his friends from CRU and student government, reading news articles, working out, and following current events around the country and world.

Nick is passionate about helping those who are marginalized and helping to make college education become more accessible to those who cannot afford it. After graduating from law school one day, Nick hopes to pursue a career in politics.

Jawaun McClam is a junior, Geography major (Urban Development track), from Florence, South Carolina. This is his second year working with University Housing as a Resident Mentor, and his third year calling Preston Residential College home. Aside from academics, Jawaun is very active in the community totaling over 200 community service hours in his first year of college. He served as an Orientation Leader this past summer. He is looking forward to another great year as a Gamecock!

Kennedy Peterson is excited to be returning to Preston for her first full year as a Resident Mentor. As a freshman, Kennedy was active in the Multicultural Assistance Peer Program (MAPP), Multicultural Outreach Student Team (MOST) and serving on the Association of African American Students (AAAS) executive board. Kennedy joined the Preston team second semester of her freshman year and is so thrilled to be surrounded by Preston residents and staff again this year! Kennedy is entering her sophomore year at UofSC pursuing an undergraduate degree in Experimental Psychology.

Being a part of the Preston community has already granted Kennedy many opportunities to volunteer and be an active member of Columbia and the university’s community and she hopes to take advantage of even more of those opportunities this year. Kennedy looks forward to meeting and connecting with everyone in Preston this year so feel free to reach out to her!

Jack Rogan is a junior at UofSC from St. Louis, Missouri, and this is his second year in Preston as a Resident Mentor. Jack is a Biology and Spanish major in the Honors College with a minor in Business Administration, and he plans to attend dental school after his time at UofSC. Aside from his role as an RM, Jack is heavily involved on campus as a Color Team Captain for UofSC Dance Marathon’s Morale Team, he is a brother of Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, and he is involved in a number of pre-health professional-related organizations. Jack has also served in Student Government in a variety of roles during his first two years at UofSC. Jack is so excited for another year in Preston!

Grant Tore is a senior Biology and Spanish major, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, which is a beautiful, historic but upand-coming city in the Midwest. After studying abroad in Costa Rica and spending a semester in Bates House, Grant is excited to be returning to Preston for his second time around. During his sophomore year, Grant served as an RM in Preston as well. Grant is passionate about access to quality healthcare and education, community outreach, and traveling whenever possible! Ask him about his favorite trips! After graduation, he is considering going abroad again through the Fulbright Student Program or the Peace Corps and eventually hopes to attend medical school to become a pediatrician.

Come learn more about all the great ways to get involved with Preston on Sunday, August 27 at 7pm in the JCR/Seminar Room. The Preston Organization Fair will be fun night in addition to the first Sundaes on Sundays (sponsored by the Preston Ambassadors)! Don’t forget your bowl!

PRESTON GOVERNMENT Preston Government serves as the voice of advocacy, a source of social programming, and financial allocation for initiatives within Preston. Residents are encouraged to participate in discussions and debates regarding our community. Funding is available for any resident to help implement programs and initiatives for Preston. Fun fact: the very first Hall Government on campus started in Preston in the 1960s!

PRESTON AMBASSADORS The Preston Ambassadors host a number of social events throughout the semester, regularly offer tours of our building, and assist with other activities in Preston.

Y-IMPACT Y-IMPACT (Youth Impacting Minds, People, and Communities Together) is Preston’s very own community service organization! Service projects have included Preston clean-ups, raising money for Relay for Life, and sponsorship for children to attend camp. Preston has a partnership with Transitions Homeless Center in Columbia, and residents volunteer there on a regular basis.

GARDEN COMMITTEE The Garden Committee works to help Preston students engage in horticulture and experience the fun and sense of responsibility that comes with nurturing our environment. We have two vegetable plots (affectionately named “Kale Yeah” and “Mint to Be”), a back gardens filled with beautiful flowers, and a brand-new meditation garden that serves as an area dedicated to bringing peace to Preston residents.

GREEN TEAM The Green Team is committed to bringing sustainability to the masses. Our environmentally friendly organization hosts educational programs and workshops to dispel sustainability myths and makes caring about the planet a top priority.

LITERARY SOCIETY The Literary Society hosts various events, including a book club, as well as tour of the Special Collections at the Thomas Cooper Library. The Literary Society helps to create our annual literary and arts journal, Bellwether.

PRESTONES The PresTones is Preston Residential College’s premier a cappella ensemble. Preston residents share, and develop their singing/musical talents while entertaining the Preston family, UofSC, and the greater community.

COMMON SPACES These rooms are available to all residents at any time, unless the space is reserved. Interested in reserving a space?

Visit http://preston.sc.edu/calendar.html ART ROOM The Art Room is found on the 3rd floor and provides you the opportunity to explore your creative skills and inclinations.

BACK GARDENS Two gardens surround Preston Residential College with flowers, bushes, shrubs, and other exotic plants. The back garden includes a mediation garden dedicated to former Associates Dr. Hal French and Mrs. Margaret Perkins.

COMPUTER LAB The computer lab is perfect for those times when your computer dies at the worst possible moment. With 3 brand new PCs, you can also bring your laptop to study.

JUNIOR COMMON ROOM (JCR) The Junior Common Room is a place to relax, socialize, study, play games, or hold meetings. It has big leather couches, a couch designed and owned by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, a beautiful library, and board games.

KITCHEN The recently-renovated kitchen on the 1st floor has a stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and cooking utensils. Please be considerate of your other Preston Residential College residents and always clean up after yourself! Please label your food in the refrigerator.

LAUNDRY ROOMS Our two laundry rooms each have 4 washers and 4 dryers. Both laundry rooms are on the east side of the first floor. Do not use bleach in these machines. Sign up to receive a text when your laundry is done!

LOBBY The Lobby has many special features. We have a working fireplace, comfy couches, a big screen TV, and a piano for residents to play. The Lobby is for you and our visitor’s enjoyment, so come sit, relax, chat, or whatever else your heart desires. Please be considerate of noise in the Lobby due to offices, the front desk, and Area Coordinator apartment.

SEMINAR ROOM The Seminar Room serves as the official meeting place for Preston Residential College classes, lectures, and most organization meetings.

STUDY ROOMS Study rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors are always open for those times you need to get away to read, write, or study.

The study room on the 3rd floor west side is a 24/7 quiet study room. Please be considerate of people occupying these rooms.

Common Spaces | 15

PRESTON DINING One key component of Preston Residential College is our unique all-you-care-to-eat dining facility, affectionately referred to as PDining.

Located on the 2nd floor of the Russell House west wing and open Monday through Thursday (5:15pm-8:00pm) for dinner, you have the chance to build community over food, and enjoy conversation with our Preston Associates. Pop in for a quick ice cream cone, or sit and chat for a while with someone new or one of our Associates. PDining is open only to Preston residents, Associates, and their guests from 5:15pm-7:00pm, Monday through Thursday. Residents and up to 5 guests can swipe in at the same time. Please make sure your guests swipe in at the same time as you! PDining will be open for the entire campus from 7:00pm-8:00pm. ADA access is available through the 2nd floor elevator and down the south ramp.

The Preston meal plan will work just like everyone else’s on campus any time of day or night anywhere on campus.

The only difference you’ll ever notice is if you bring a friend who doesn’t live in Preston to dinner at PDining. You’ll use just one swipe, while your guest may need to use a swipe and have to pay the difference with Carolina Cash, Meal Plan Dollars, etc. Please contact the Carolina Card office with questions. All residents are required to purchase a Preston meal plan. Students who join a fraternity or sorority will not be exempt from our meal plan.

CEREAL KILLERS/SUNDAES ON SUNDAYS One Sunday evening, every other month, Cereal Killers is a great way to unwind from the stresses of class or just an awesome chance to meet people you didn’t know lived in Preston Residential College. And the free cereal is always a plus! It’s BOYB (bowl, that is). The companion event is Sundaes on Sundays—same idea, just with ice cream!

FIRESIDE CHATS Creating a culture of learning outside of the classroom is a priority at Preston Residential College. The Fireside Chat series is an interactive way for Preston residents to learn from expert faculty, community partners, and visiting scholars on a range of topics. This initiative is interactive and has explored topics such as Chocolate Around the World, the FIFA World Cup, the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, Cheese Around the World, and Women in Science.

FRIDAY EVENING DINING EXPERIENCE (FEDEX) Have you ever tried Ethiopean food?

What about Indian, Chinese, Greek, Thai, French, Vietnamese or vegan food? Held one Friday each month, FEDEx takes Preston residents to different restaurants in the greater Columbia area where they can explore new cultures through food.

GATSBY BANQUET AND AWARDS CEREMONY The Gatsby Banquet and Awards Ceremony is Preston Residential College’s traditional end-of-year banquet. Dress up for a great time including the presentation of awards, organization recognition, and a farewell to those moving on.

K(NO)W MORE The Preston K(no)w More series is a dialogue series that explores different topics relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The purpose of K(no)w More is twofold– to Know More about a given topic and to encourage No More ignorance toward that subject. This event is set up in a fishbowl format where residents are able to ask anonymous questions that are explored in a safe space by a panel of students and expert community partners. Former discussion topics have included the LGBT* Community, Race and Ethnicity, Gender Norms, Relationship Violence, Mental Health, Hunger and Homelessness, etc.

LEADERSHIP SEMINAR Each year, students can participate in leadership seminars. Learn skills that will benefit your time in Preston and beyond!

PJS AND PANCAKES Take a break from studying for finals and enjoy fresh-made pancakes and other yummy breakfast treats. The Preston staff and Associates love serving you brain food and helping you power through the end of the semester. PJs are highly encouraged!

PRESTON PALOOZA AND PAINT WAR Preston Palooza is Preston Government’s end-of-year celebration for the community. This event often includes field day activities, music, food, and giveaway items to celebrate the end of the academic year.

ADVICE FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR by Chloe Grace Rafferty PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE When I started my freshman year, I made it a point to introduce myself to as many people as possible, and I made so many great connections. College is full of all different kinds of people and everyone is receptive and kind. If you see someone eating alone, go sit with them. Introduce yourself to people every chance you get!

GET INVOLVED UofSC has over 400 organizations! If you’re unsure about which ones to join, make sure to attend the Greene Street organization fair. There’s something for everybody, and being part of organizations makes college even more fun. You get to meet people with the same interests and learn what you’re passionate about… what’s better than that?!

BUT DON’T SPREAD YOURSELF TOO THIN Academics ALWAYS come first. Time management is an acquired skill, so if you accidentally spread yourself too thin, it’s totally OK to take a break from an organization or two to focus on your classes. Take advantage of campus resources and don’t be afraid to ask for help! In the long run, it’ll benefit you greatly and boost up that GPA. ENJOY IT You’ve probably heard it a bunch of times, but college goes by quickly. Take advantage of every opportunity!

Even if you’re not into sports, attend games. Aside from academics and organizations, the experiences you take advantage of are what make college so memorable. Make good decisions, take care of yourself, and have fun! College is what you make it!

PRESTON RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE LIFE-HACKS By Emma Millar Although adjusting to college isn’t always easy, it can also be lots of fun! To help you navigate life as a new Preston resident, here is a list of tips and tricks that I learned from my first two years of living in this vibrant and supportive community you will soon call home: 1. First and foremost, we are a residential college, not a dorm. You’ll probably hear this distinction a lot during the year, and my advice is to just roll with it. It’s confusing at first, but soon enough you’ll learn that living in Preston is way different (and better) than typical dorm life for so many reasons, including being able to take classes in the Seminar Room and enjoying Preston Dining.

2. On the topic of food…eat at PDining as often as possible! The 30 second walk across the street will be a much anticipated one after a long day of classes and activities. Nothing is better than ending an evening with fellow Preston residents and eating some of the best food on campus.

3. While walking the 2nd and 3rd floor halls, it is easy to get a little turned around (especially if you’re directionally challenged like me!). An easy trick to find the way back to your room is to remember which staircase you need to take! The Super Mario Bros staircase is on West side and the Under the Sea/Mermaid staircase leads to East side.

4. Befriend your Resident Mentor (RM), and the RM staff! They’re not only great resources for all things UofSC and Preston related, but also friendly faces that are always there for you (especially when you lock yourself out of your room!)

5. Get involved! Join a Preston organization like the Green Team or the PresTones. The many student-led organizations you can join are unique to Preston and lots of fun. If you don’t see something that peaks your interest, chat with friends and some of the Preston staff to work on starting your own org! Check out all the organizations at the Preston Organization Fair on Sunday, August 27 at 7:00pm in the JCR/Seminar Room.

6. A sturdy hamper and your phone timer are two things to make doing laundry much easier. Bringing your clothes to the laundry rooms and back can get a little tedious if you don’t have a trusty bin that can also hold your detergent, especially when you have to climb a few flights of stairs. Also, set your phone timer (36 mins for washer and 45 mins for dryer) before leaving the laundry room so you never forget to take your clothes out on time.

7. Missing your pet at home? Or just in the mood to play? Visit with Area Coordinator Ryan Lloyd’s puppy Fernando! He loves to play in the backyard of Preston with students. Also feel free to visit the Principal’s Lodge to hang out with the Andersons’ cats, and their silly and fun-loving daughters, Maleah and Ashlyn!

8. Want to meet everyone in the building as quickly as possible? Hang out in the Lobby or on the front porch! Everyone will be more than happy to chat on their way in and out of the building.

9. Don’t forget to have your reusable bowl and spoon ready on Sunday nights! Cereal Killers and Sundaes on Sundays are delicious events to attend if you want to unwind with your friends and neighbors as you prepare for the week ahead. Just remember, they’re always BYOB (Bring Your Own Bowl)!

10. And finally… always remember that with the Preston community backing you, you will be unstoppable at Carolina!

Can I apply to live in Preston after my freshman year?

Absolutely! You can reapply to live in Preston each year until you graduate, if you like! Re-applications, as well as applications from current students who want to move into Preston for the first time, will be available in October on my.sc.edu. You should know before Winter Break if you are invited back to Preston next year. The best way to strengthen your re-application is to be an active member of our community starting from day one! All returning students are expected to have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA in order to have their application considered.

Why does Preston want residents to dine together?

Preston is all about community! What better way to continue building community than over food?

Hang out with friends, meet new people, and enjoy all PDining has to offer. Our residents are frequently joined by faculty and professional staff members from around campus and the greater Columbia community. Take this chance to interact with faculty and staff in a different environment over some of the best food on campus.

Who are the Preston Associates?

The Preston Associates are faculty and staff who have volunteered to spend time with our community. You’ll see them at Preston Dining, at events, or maybe even in the classroom! Creating relationships with faculty and staff will help you succeed in college, and we want to make it really easy for you to start interacting in a more informal way than you may be used to with teachers from high school. Introduce yourself at dinner one night and see where the conversation takes you!

Can I cook in Preston?

The Preston community kitchen is located on the west side of the first floor. It has a full-size refrigerator, stove and oven, microwave, and lots of pots and pans. Don’t leave food unattended while cooking, and make sure to clean up after yourself and wash all items before you leave. If you plan to keep ingredients or food in the refrigerator, please make sure to label your items and throw them out when you are done with them or when they expire. You cannot use hotplates or cooking devices in your room.
