PRESBYTERIAN LADIES’ COLLEGE

The theme of the Kookaburra this year revolves heavily around the idea of ‘interconnectedness’, a word encapsulating the strong community spirit at PLC.
From the outset, we both knew that we wanted to create a yearbook that would highlight our School’s impressive diversity. In our search for inspiration, we came across a quote by spiritual teacher and author Swami Dhyan Giten:
“We begin to understand that we are not small separate islands in a great ocean, but that life is one and that we all are small parts of the Whole. We begin to understand what is really important and meaningful in life.”
We feel that this summarises where we wanted to take the Kookaburra this year, as it is the individual components of our School that makes PLC the vibrant environment that it is. In particular, we both agree that the School has strengthened its already strong community spirit, with students from across all four campuses contributing with their own unique talents. We have especially noticed this in our own year group: the Year 12s have certainly stepped up in participation and leadership across the board, but more so are known for their obliging inclusivity.
Past years’ editorials have chosen to represent singular aspects of the School, from the sporting sphere to academic progress. However, K13 (as we fondly refer to it) takes in all aspects of PLC, combining them to illustrate how each part is an integral piece of the whole. This is evident in the visual
layout and creative approach we have taken. In a deviation from previous years, we have chosen to use a large collection of students in a manner that highlights the way every individual at PLC is interconnected with those around them.
As our time here is drawing to a close, we have been able to reflect on how PLC has influenced us and provided us with such a great range of opportunities that have shaped who we have become. This year has certainly been a memorable experience for all. The class of 2013 in particular has developed such strong bonds and we have loved spending our time with such an outstanding group of girls. We wish every one of you the best of luck in your future endeavors and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Talia Clohessy, Kookaburra Student Literary Editor & Fiz Eustance, Kookaburra Student Photographic Editor
AScottish clan is a kinship group among the Scottish people. Clans give a sense of shared identity and descent to members.
For me, an absolute highlight of the year 2013 was to be part of the audience at the Virginia International Tattoo in Norfolk, United States. This annual event is the largest military Tattoo held in the States and with performers from around the world it is a spectacular visual and musical concert. The sounds, colours and formations of over 900 military

bands, bagpipers, drill teams, dancers, choirs and orchestras filled the vast space of the Scope Arena and thrilled audiences of around 10,000 people across three days.
I watched with pride our Antipodean all-girls’ Scottish Pipe Band matching it with the best of military bands from around the world, including the 1st Battalion Scots Guards and marveled at the origins of our School and the historical journey that led to this event.
I thought of the vision, commitment and courage of a group of Scottish settlers in Perth, Western Australia who, nearly 100 years ago, dared to make real a dream to offer their daughters an education equal to that offered to their sons at Scotch College. How fitting then for Presbyterian Ladies’ College to be marching and performing alongside Scotch College in Norfolk.
Our Pipe Band represents our Scottish heritage and I have no doubt that the sounds of drums and bagpipes will always evoke memories of school days and a shared identity for members of the Presbyterian Ladies’ College clan or community.
We have taken the Scottish strong tradition of clans and their historical purpose of protection and nurturing and expanded it. The PLC ‘clan’ has become more inclusive, global and attentive to the diverse range of individual talents, needs and abilities. Individualism and community may seem to run counter to each other but “the community and the individual are of equal importance; none has a higher value or importance over the other. Without community, the individual cannot exist, and without the individual, the community cannot exist.”
In Norfolk, Virginia, I witnessed individual triumphs as well as the success of the whole Band. For example, our Drum Major, Maddie Lofthouse, seemed to stand taller as she marched alongside the professional
Drum Major of the Scots Guard. She stepped out into the arena as the only female lead. Another member of the Band, Sarah Fitzgerald, had the courage to take on an impromptu drum performance at rehearsals in the absence of the regular drummer. All members of the Band returned home individually richer for the experience but bonded as a community.
Our Kookaburra editors, Felicity Eustance and Talia Clohessy, have captured the essence of our community (or ‘clan’) in 2013. The colourful front cover portrays a community of individuals whose self-reliance is intertwined with one another. The shared events, traditions, achievements and history contained between the magazine’s covers tells the story of this community’s inter-connectedness. The Pipe Band adventure is but one story among many of students who, across this year, have grown in mind, body and spirit while contributing to the culture and community of Presbyterian Ladies’ College.
Beth Blackwood, Principal
It doesn’t seem like much time has passed since we were rehearsing the farewell song for the class of 2012. We had bagpipes, bagpipe harmonies, quartets, dancing and even singing teachers. Maybe this was so memorable because it was the beginning of an amazing year and from there the creativity did not end.
This year’s motto was ‘Bring it on!’. For the girls in Year 12, this has really been about embracing the challenges of the

year and facing them head on. It can be used in all situations, from an IGSSA hockey match to a first performance of the Middle School musical to studying for that dreaded maths test. I think the best thing about the Year 12s of 2013 has been our inclusiveness. There have been lunchtimes where our entire year has spontaneously sat together in a massive circle on the quad and taken part in impromptu flash-mobs to ‘Thriller’ on Halloween. Every day at school, I looked forward to lunchtimes with these girls.
As a year group, we began the year with our Year 12 Ball. It was held at Fraser’s in Kings Park and with all the girls looking beautiful, it was certainly a night to remember. However I think one of the highlights for us has got to be our legendary Student Assembly. It involved the majority of our year group planning and rehearsing together. There was a Harry Potter re-enactment with Mr Anderson as Dumbledore, who had the whole school in fits of laughter. There were videos and skits such as the annual boarders’ video, the hilarious elbow-licking documentary, ‘GleeLC’, a new take on Les Miserables and much more. It finished off with the staff-room skit, where 18 girls took on the roles of certain teachers and the School discovered the real ‘secret’ of the ‘Secret Men’s Society’. It was the whole year’s creative juices coming together in one massive showdown and I feel it really was a culmination of us as a year group.
There are so many people to thank for this amazing year. Thank you to Mia Egerton-Warburton who has been a great help as Deputy Head Prefect. I have loved going to the Boarding House for her calming words in times of stress as she always knew what to do. To Ms Blackwood – she has taken many forms this year. At Easter she was dressed in a rabbit ‘onesie’, she appeared in a feather boa on stage for karaoke at Assembly and for Arts Day she was dressed as Rhonda from the AAMI advertisement. In all her forms she has been a great support and inspiration to all the girls. The saying ‘my door is always open’ applies to Mrs Flint. All the students including myself felt comfortable walking into
her office at any time of the day for a chat and she was always there to listen and help. Mrs Brandenburg has been a friendly and supportive Year Coordinator and I say this on behalf of all the Year 12s that she has put in a huge effort to make sure everything has run as smoothly as possible. Thank you to all the teachers who always have our best interests in mind and are always putting in the extra effort to make sure we do the best we can.
My favourite thing about PLC is our culture of participating as much as possible. Every morning, lunchtime and afternoon there are girls at music practices, sport trainings, House Choir rehearsals and group study sessions. I always looked forward to meeting new friends across different years at all these events and this makes the School the friendly community it is. I thank you for the best years of my life, whether it was at early cross-country trainings or bagpiping and cheering on the rowers at Head of the River or even studying after school in the library. Whatever it was, there were always girls who would sing and dance with me, who would offer to help with homework and most importantly make me laugh – and I think this summarises life as a PLC student incredibly well.
To Annabel Watts, the Head Prefect for 2014, I know that you will be an incredible leader. From my locker on the middle level, I can sometimes hear your low laugh from the top floor and I hope it is heard in all corridors next year. Good luck with everything in your final year!
To the Year 12s of 2013, I know that each and every one of you will go so far. Each of you has the energy and motivation to achieve whatever it is you dream about. For some of you, we have spent 14 years together, others just a few, but they have each been memorable and I will miss seeing your smiling faces as I walk the corridors. I know that we will always stay close and I hope that we will have many reunions in the years to come. Go out there and ‘Bring it on!’
Rosie Bradley, Head Prefect
The most exciting, challenging and action packed year of my life would have to be the colossal event that was 2013 at PLC. i have been truly inspired by not only my fantastic Year group, but also the amazing Student Council, which has worked tirelessly and selflessly to make 2013 absolutely historic.
The 2013 Student Council began the journey together on a special bonding camp where we learnt leadership skills

and thanks to Mrs Flint, how to cook a proper curry. Amongst many activities such as white water rafting and Rebecca Cole falling overboard down a waterfall, we came up with a few ideas for the year, such as Bruce the ‘shark of kindness’. Paying homage to the Pixar film Finding Nemo, Bruce a toy shark head sitting at reception became a way that students could celebrate ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ they had seen around the School by placing notes of what others had done into his mouth –as nothing screams kindness more than the open mouth of a hungry shark. However not only did Bruce encourage good deeds around the School, he also emphasised that kindness can indeed come in many forms. The Student Council’s motto this year was ‘Bring It On’, which was created in collaboration with the Year 12s in order to encourage everyone to grab the year with both hands and involve themselves in all opportunities that arise.
The motto can be applied to anything, from signing yourself up for a sporting team to singing an Adele song on Arts Day. There is no doubt that this motto also encouraged the staff to take part in new experiences, which can be especially applied to ‘Teacher Karaoke’, where students paid a coin donation to see a particular teacher sing a song at Assembly. The fundraiser resulted in the courageous Ms Blackwood, Mr Scholten, and Ms Jorgenson belting out Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ in front of an enthusiastic mass of students.
Overall, it is safe to say that 2013 has been an incredible year, with the entire School being so supportive of the bizarre and innovative ways of the Student Council. Led by one of the most hard working, fun loving and cheekily wonderful Head Prefects, Rosie Bradley, it has been a fabulous year. I would also like to congratulate Catherine Berry on being elected Deputy Head Prefect for 2014 – I know that she will be incredible!
Mia Egerton-Warburton, Deputy Head Prefect
We believe that many hands make a House but many hearts make a School. As the Student Prefects of 2013, we feel that this truly embodies our role in the past year working with the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools.
At the start of 2013, we set ourselves a goal, with our main aim to bring together the three tiers of the School in order to create strong bonds between students of all ages.
The Junior School is subject to isolation through the bitumen barrier of View Street, which segregates the young from the older students. In our role we wanted to cross this barrier, which was done through numerous activities such as the Big Sister programme and the Year 6 and 12 bonding lunch.
Big Sister is a programme that has been in place over the past few years to assist the new Year 7s and 8s and help them fully immerse themselves into the PLC community. The programme is run by the Senior School students, in particular the Year 10s and 11s and gives the younger students a chance to mingle and interact with older students and make them seem much less intimidating.
Initially the programme was to help strengthen the connection between all the Year levels of the School, but also turned into a really enjoyable time. Big Sister allowed the involved Senior School students to better enhance their leadership skills before heading into their final years.
Our time as Student Prefects has been an unforgettable experience. We have learnt many new skills in terms of communication, leadership and organisation. Good luck to the Student Prefect for 2014, Nina Wise. It is safe to say that you will take on this role with integrity and passion, so have fun and enjoy the ride!
Kate Forrester & Sophie Stockwell, Student Prefects

The year 2013 has left me a little speechless. Term by term, PLC students have demonstrated their commitment to the needs of others, a truly inspiring quality.
The number of girls involved across so many different activities was outstanding and led to the exceptional influence that our School has left on the lives of so many.
As part of the International Baccalaureate programme, the Middle School students have each achieved their MYP Service Bookmark, a fantastic first step in their service journey. I encourage them to continue on from this in the next few years and engage in the many service opportunities that PLC provides.
From working with disabled children at Sportslink, visiting the elderly at Amana Living, taking part in one of our Service Immersion Tours to the Kimberly, Cambodia or Tanzania, and initiating individual service projects within their House Tutor Groups, just to name a few.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting women and men who have reinvented their lives with the help of UnitingCare West and I’ve heard about the difference that this School has made.
The gifts that PLC girls give to complete strangers through our appeals each term are received with an appreciation that cannot be matched. I am so proud of each and every girl who has given of her time this year and I am so honoured to have held this position. I hope next year that the PLC community will continue to have this same impact.
I cannot go without thanking the Service Team of Sara Bergmann and Lucy Alcock (Reconciliation Captains), Caitlin O’Shea (Civics and Social Justice Captain), Holly Schwelm (Environmental Captain), Eve Bramley (Overseas Captain) and Michaela Miller (Boarding House Service Prefect) for all their help and leadership over the past year. I wish Sannah Maclean all the best and I know she will do an incredible job as Service Captain in 2014.
Kate Mannolini, Service Captain

The Service Team of 2013 began with a contribution to the annual MAd (Make a difference) week. As part of this, we decided it was important for the School community to celebrate Harmony Day as recognition of cultural respect between all nationalities within the School. Coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the message for 2013 was ‘Everybody Belongs’, with the theme ‘Many Stories – One Australia’. In order to develop this message, a whole School activity and lunch was organised, where we created a large mural by students placing their handprints in orange paint and writing their own views on why harmony is important. Students also sat together sharing lunches with a variety of international dishes. The artwork is now displayed in the Middle School building as a reminder that harmony is an integral part of social justice and belonging within our own community. PLC has actively promoted intercultural awareness for many years, with this year being no exception. Representatives from international schools around Perth have held successful socials celebrating the diversity of students in WA. In a school such as ours, where students hail from countries as diverse as China, South Africa, the United States, France and Japan, we believe it is vital for everyone to know that their cultural beliefs and origins are respected. It is integral to acknowledge that their identity is a valuable aspect of our multicultural Australian society.
This year has been challenging for the Australian international community, especially with our government facing the issue of refugees and asylum seekers. I thought it important to explore these issues in the School community, holding lunchtime meetings to discuss how Australia has responded in order to explore the debate so often only dealt with politically. We discussed the nature of human rights and how important the values of fairness, equality and respect for diversity are in all spheres of life. 2013 has been a very successful year in celebrating and recognising international awareness and belonging at PLC. This wouldn’t have been possible without Ms Bahen and Ms Lukin’s incredible support, as well as all the PLC students who enthusiastically participate within the School community. I am very proud to have been a part of the Service Team for 2013 and I wish the Service Team of 2014 continuing success!

LEARNING AREAS

“Setting goals and achieving them is fundamental to improvement and celebrating and discussing achievement along the way can keep students motivated to continue.”
CELEBRATE YOuR LEARNiNG

Mathematics, Science, The Arts and all other subjects are a key part of being a student, but how often do students celebrate their success? Yes, the winners and top achievers are recognised, but how often do students talk about their individual success no matter the level? Talking about academic subjects should become as common as talking about cocurricular activities around the dinner table. It should be normal to explain how students achieved a +5 increase in their mark for a WACE or Diploma subject, or perhaps an increase in level for a criterion in MYP. Setting goals and achieving them is fundamental to improvement and celebrating and discussing achievement along the way can keep students motivated to continue. These small steps help them improve during the year and maximise overall achievement.
eTExTBOOKS

Publishers of textbooks are finally providing effective electronic versions of textbooks rather than bland PDF versions. These eTexts provide an increasing amount of interaction and enrich the learning experience. During 2013, Years 7 to 10 have successfully been using eTexts in Mathematics and Science. It is expected that the use of eBooks will expand into the Senior School as new editions become available. There are also developments in the software that students can use to access these new versions that further increase the benefit and ease of use.
iNCREASiNG CHOiCE
Year 10 girls had an increase in choice of subjects this year and many took advantage of this to study Musical Theatre (Drama and Music), Sports Science (Science and Physical Education) and Fashion Fusion (Materials and Textiles). These electives brought together two areas for the students to explore in detail and investigate the relationships between the areas. These units showed that concepts, content and process overlap to provide a better understanding. This year, over 80 students took one or more of these units and this successful introduction of units has ensured their continuation for 2014.
WACE and Diploma students also had an increased choice in subjects due to the strengthening of links with Scotch College. Some subjects, for example Diploma Spanish ab initio and WACE Geography had been studied at Scotch College last year. However during 2013, the range of subjects showed an increase. Some were due to individual students solving a timetable clash by taking one subject at the other

school. Thus a combination that was not available at PLC became a possibility by going to Scotch College and vice versa. During Term 3 and the subject selection process, it has become obvious that even more girls and boys will be taking cross-campus subjects for 2014, thus allowing them to build their own individual courses that include new subjects and avoidance of timetable clashes.
SPREAdiNG YOuR WiNGS
Our girls now consider the world to be their oyster when it comes to tertiary education. Many students have completed their applications for entry to universities in USA, England, Japan and all States in Australia. Some of these applications require taking extra tests during the year and include the SATs for USA and the TSA for entry into Oxford University. Due to the increase in the number of applications, PLC is registered as a testing centre to help the girls perform at their best. The results from these tests are then added to the school results for determining entry.
Many girls are also applying for scholarships and early entry, which often require personal statements, school references and predicted grades before the end of Term 3. It is therefore essential that these girls have maintained a high work ethic and achieved consistently during the year to have the best possible set of results. This year, several girls were successful in receiving early offers and scholarships to universities in other States. While a cause for celebration, they did not rest on their laurels, as they also had to achieve an appropriate ATAR to keep their place at the university.
Congratulations to all who achieved their personal goals for the year.
Keith Anderson, Deputy Principal

THE BuSHFiRE BRuMBiES
When the spiteful sun reaches it’s peak on the hottest hour, The dry wind riders mount their steed and they ascend to power. Distant trotting of the bushfire brumbies on the cracked earth plains, They are gathering momentum as the sun beats on their manes. The stallion’s nostrils dilate with smoke; a sign of what’s to come As he calls for reinforcements and they answer, one by one.
All residents evacuate as the brumbies gather speed, Fresh fire from the sun as fuel is all the food these ponies need. Their hooves kick up ash on baking plains with every single stride, Helpless lizards burrow for the core, trying in vain to hide. Bushfire brumbies halt, pawing the ground, awaiting direction, Dry wind riders build again, not needing any protection.
Onwards and eastwards they travel, flames engulfing their fetlocks, Trampling eucalypts and saplings, cunning as a feral fox, The parched ground chokes as the hooves trample through; panic fills the air. Fire fighters muster the brumbies, hoping in vain to ensnare, Flightier than emus, stronger than gums, bolder than thunder, Dry wind riders are never harnessed and avoid a blunder.
Onwards and eastwards, their tails streaming behind, fire at their hooves, Cantering, a trail of flames as a scar, breaths held, nothing moves. Free with the wind, out of control, like wedge-tail eagles they soar, Smoke blinds all creatures, but the ponies see like never before. Flightier than emus, stronger than gums, louder than thunder, They run with wind, never give mercy, watch eucalypts sunder.
Surrounded at last with all exits covered, their end is nigh, Fire brumbies are forced to surrender, no sun left in the sky. Drowsy with defeat, they sink to the earth with their heavy hearts, Blaze is drenched with water; puff of smoke, the stallion departs. The dry wind riders have lost their strength and power with no steed, Bushfire brumbies have left their scars, and the bush is left to bleed.
Amidst the carnage are banskia seedlings that the embers spilt, From these seeds hope sprouts, then homes and lives are gradually rebuilt. But on the hottest hour the dry wind riders again will call, The brumbies will gather momentum; the fragile bush will fall, Flightier than emus, stronger than gums, crueler than thunder. They run with wind, never give mercy, their purpose is plunder.

CELLO
She is born in the arms of the forest
The great spruce her lifeblood and friend
Her form is a lesson in movement
Each fluid, carved crest and smooth bend
She plays like the wind in the evening
A beautiful, keening-sweet sound
Which makes people say all the things that they normally wouldn’t; their voicebox unbound
Her song is so painful and bitter
Yet sweet with the good times to come
Not catchy, but ever-elusive
That tune you keep trying to hum
She plays with the wind and the sunshine
The rhythm of rain on the ground
Her tone finds its root in the nature
Which creates and completes her surrounds
She sings with the pain of our Maker
When people don’t hear his words
And when we open our hearts to her message
The heat in our salt-tears burns
She is born in the arms of the forest
The great spruce her lifeblood and friend
Her form is a lesson in movement
Each fluid, carved crest and smooth bend

“Changes in the way that feedback is given and received… has seen teachers in the Junior School consider feedback provided through the eyes of the students.”
Professor John Hattie, the author of Visible Learning, a meta analysis of 800 individual studies that examine effective practices in teaching, espouses practice whereby teachers “see learning through the eyes of the student and when students see themselves as their own teachers ”.

Changes in the way that feedback is given and received, with a greater focus on how this is understood and used, has seen teachers in the Junior School consider feedback provided through the eyes of the students. Accordingly, students have been invited to become active participants in conversations related to what they know and understand about the learning process and about themselves as learners.
Typically teachers provide task-specific feedback for students after a particular assessment piece is completed. The primary concern for teachers has been about the feedback that they give, rather than how that feedback is received and used by the student. Little opportunity was provided for students to act on the feedback provided. Consideration by staff of the work of Professor John Hattie has influenced the development of a more dynamic system of feedback in the Junior School. We believe that using formative assessment to inform what is being taught and how it is taught supports and enriches learning for the individual, allowing the opportunity for improvement based on feedback received.

Traditionally teachers have assessed and reported on student academic performance twice a year, providing summative feedback to parents and students through formal reports sent home at the end of a semester. Such feedback comprised one-way communication with little impact on subsequent learning. Formative feedback served a less significant role in that although its impact on learning was known, the real power of feedback to further learning was not fully utilised. Clearly there was a need to address this, as considerable time and effort is expended on the writing of formal reports with little value placed on formative feedback.
The rationale for using purposeful formative feedback in the learning process is to develop ‘assessment capable students’ who are active participants in conversations with teachers. They ‘feed forward’ their ideas
regarding what they need to progress their knowledge, skills and conceptual understandings. Assessment capable students expect and utilise feedback that is ‘just in time’ and ‘just for me’ to advance their learning. Targeted feedback enables a student to clearly identify ‘where I am in my learning process’ and ‘what I need to help me make progress’. The role of the teacher in this process is to consider each child’s learning, providing specific detail regarding what is essential to inform the next steps. Information is constantly being collated, analysed and exchanged between teacher and student, as opposed to the student waiting until the end of a unit of work for feedback. Such detailed, evidencebased feedback supports student learning just in time and just for them. Also immediate evidence of student learning is conveyed to the teacher, thus informing subsequent lesson planning, classroom organisation and necessary support.
This shift to generating feedback that furthers learning rather than feedback that simply judges what has been done has greatly changed the discourse that occurs between students and teachers in all classrooms. The most effective schools today are those where students routinely have the opportunity to voice their views about the meaning and value of the educational experiences offered to them. Accordingly, the dialogue that is customarily overheard in the classrooms is of students who are active collaborators in their learning, expressing their needs in a knowledgeable and purposeful way.

LADIES’ COLLEGE

“We
all need a place where we can be ourselves, where we can be understood, where we can grow and be accepted.”
During the year, i had the great fortune to travel overseas for an extended period of time.
As I struggled to make myself understood in the grocery stores of the tiny villages of Italy, attempted to barter at the Grand Bazaar in Marmaris, Turkey and didn’t get what I thought I had ordered for my meal in Paris, I experienced the value of intercultural awareness and language learning. Girls in the Middle School are fortunate indeed to have the opportunity to engage in language acquisition.

The glories of past civilizations in Italy, Greece and Turkey, the magnificence of the architecture in Paris and the delights of the countryside in Ireland and Scotland created the perfect backdrop for some rest, relaxation and inspiration. Never had I witnessed the past coming to life as in the ancient arenas of Ephasus or felt the ethereal quality of the mist swirling in the Scottish Highlands. However, if I had to single out one location, it would be Ireland. In a country that probably doesn’t have that much to be positive about (with a struggling economy, unfinished building projects, high unemployment and more Irish people living outside of Ireland than in it), I was struck by the people’s immense
optimism and the fact that young, old or otherwise, they connected to their ‘place’ and each other through their stories, traditional music and dance. And this is what reminded me of PLC! Our School plays a significant role in providing a ‘place’ for girls where, in a fast paced and what can sometimes be a lonely world, they can develop connections to others. They can connect from the past and in the present with others who share a common story and who share songs and a history. PLC provides a place for girls to grow and to be themselves. Throughout this year, events such as the first ever Year 7 and 8 musical production, the challenging yet enjoyable Outdoor Education Programmes and our Personal Goals project embraced by the Year 8 and 9 girls, have all provided a connection to ‘place’.
We all need a place where we can be ourselves, where we can be understood, where we can grow and be accepted.
MiddLE SCHOOL
On a card that I picked up at the Lanecost Priory in the north of England was the following prayer:
“If this is not a place where my spirits can take wing…
If this is not a place where tears can be understood…
If this is not a place where my questions can be asked…
If this is not a place where my feelings can be heard…
If this is not a place where you’ll accept me as I am…
If this is not a place where I can try to learn and grow…
Where can I just be me?”
I hope that for the girls in Middle School, PLC is that place.
Sharon Anderson, Head of Middle School

“…the class of 2013 has brought much enthusiasm, laughter and goodwill and has had a strong sense of community.”

PLC has always had a strong sense of community spirit, which is evident in the many events the School holds. This is a School that is shared and the community involvement is evident.
This year’s Year 12 Ball was held at Fraser’s, King’s Park. Again the parents of Year 12 past and present stepped up and helped with the table decorations befitting the beautiful location.
Over the years, we have had School Balls at hotels, sailing clubs and stadiums, but none have been as beautiful as this year’s Ball. I remember thinking on the night how lucky the girls are to be given such an amazing opportunity. They looked beautiful, their behaviour was perfect and it was truly a magical evening.
The Year 12s have had the motto ‘Bring It On’ – and bring it on they did! Each Year 12 group is unique and special in its own way but the class of 2013 has brought much enthusiasm, laughter and goodwill and has had a strong sense of community.
Head Prefect, Rosie Bradley and Deputy Prefect, Mia Egerton-Warburton have ably led the Year group. Rosie has brought a sense of fun, yet she has worked quietly behind the scenes to make sure so many things have run smoothly. I can say she has singlehandedly made sure her Year group bonded so that everyone had a sense of belonging. As an example, this was the first time there were no issues with Ball tables where Rosie, without most people knowing, took the responsibility for making sure everyone had a place. Whilst Rosie worked quietly in the background, the same cannot be said for her banter in the hallways: She was always laughing (loudly) and could be heard before she was seen. The staff and students will always remember Rosie as an inclusive Head Prefect with a great sense of humour. Mia has also quietly and efficiently completed her duties and has provided a good balance in the roles required by the two main leaders. It is always wonderful watching all the leaders of the School blossom and grow in their roles.

The Year 11 year group showed their community spirit when 59 girls signed up to be cheerleaders at Head of the River. This is 67% of their year group and shows that the girls realise that despite being the ‘half-year cohort’ they won’t do anything half-heartedly. I thank them for their commitment and they know, as there are less of them, they will all need to contribute to make their time at School memorable. They enjoyed their beautiful Year 11 Dance with the theme of ‘Into the Stars’. Again this event could not have occurred without the support of our Year 11 parent helpers and we thank them for their sense of community spirit.
The Year 10s have had a busy year with all the opportunities on offer. The Year 10 Social with the theme of ‘Black and White’ made for many interesting outfits. Again we thank the parents who helped with this event. The Year 10s managed the goal of completing their Personal Projects and have also enjoyed the rigours of the Year 10 Outdoor Education Programme. The year of challenges prepares them well for Year 11.
This year we introduced the ‘Peace and Tranquility Room’ in the second semester prior to all exams. This is a quiet room where the girls can go for some stillness and to avoid the corridor chatter. This is all part of ‘Positive Psychology’ and a chance for girls to have some calm before they write their papers.
Finally I would like to thank the three Year Coordinators, Mr Hinchley (Year 10), Mrs Hodge (Year 11) and Ms Brandenburg (Year 12) along with our Tutor Teachers and Ms Ribnick, the Senior School Counsellor, who work hard to make sure all girls in the Senior School are valued, known and are an important part of our community.
Past and present members always build a community, so I take this opportunity to wish the class of 2013 the very best for a happy, healthy future and hope they will come back to PLC to continue to contribute to this thriving community.
Neesha Flint, Head of Senior School

“The tolerance and inclusiveness induced by living with girls from different parts of the state, country or even the world is something that has really set us apart…”

At PLC, the boarders are renowned for having an attitude unlike any other; an attitude that embodies the 2013 motto of ‘Bring it On’ by giving it a go and overcoming challenges.
Whether it was welcoming new boarders, doing their best on the sporting field, meeting new people at social events, or simply keeping themselves entertained in the Boarding House, the boarders always exuded confidence and happiness.
The tolerance and inclusiveness induced by living with girls from different parts of the state, country or even the world is something that has really set us apart from the rest and given us this ‘give everything a go’ attitude.
The year 2013 commenced with the usual wave of screams and hugs that come from ‘sisters’ catching up after two months of separation. This was followed by the much-anticipated annual ‘Boarders’ Closed Weekend’, which was aimed at getting the new girls involved, bringing the year groups together and simply having a laugh. It is safe to say a trip to Adventure World and a bowling alley didn’t fail and everyone certainly had a lot of fun.

The boarders’ football team especially expressed our ‘Bring It On’ attitude this year. Despite our new coach bringing fresh techniques and training methods, which greatly improved our game over the season, the team led by Natasha Thompson was never able to bring home a win. Special mention must go to our leading goal scorer Sophie Maitland, who was able to score our only goal for the season.
Enthusiasm was also displayed across the many boarders’ service activities for the year. Along with our annual effort to raise money for the Salvation Army Door Knock Appeal, a record number of senior boarders participated in this year’s Relay for Life, showing the commitment of the Boarding House in helping others and giving of their time. Another example of this was a new initiative by our Boarding House Service Prefect, Michaela Miller, which saw a knitting epidemic take flight.
Through our efforts, we were able to make two blankets for the homeless –a project that I hope will be continued in the future as it was a fantastic way of getting the boarders further involved in service.
Congratulations and good luck to the Senior Boarder for 2014, Kendall Spurgeon. I know the Boarding House will be in good hands with her as their leader. Enough thanks cannot go out to our new Director of Boarding, Liz Langdon, who has made a fabulous transition into the position and has already made many positive improvements to the Boarding House. To the Deputy Senior Boarder, Megan Rex, and the rest of the phenomenal prefect team, you have made this year so special. Living with you all over the last five years has taught me the importance of true friendship and I know our bond will last long beyond the walls of the Boarding House.
Eleanor Lang, Senior Boarder

As arts Captain for 2013, my personal goal was to excite, entertain and motivate my peers to participate within the fabulous range of arts at PLC and follow with this year’s motto, ‘Bring it on!’
I wanted to spark interest in the Arts and enhance its creativity and beauty, as I believe it is an area where every person can discover something new and unleash their true individual selves. It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the outstanding opportunity to work with such talented, enthusiastic and creative students this year.
I believe success in the Arts is only limited by one’s imagination and this year every girl has truly excelled. I am amazed at the creative talent that exists within the PLC community, whether it is dance, drama, media, visual art, public speaking or music; the passion that exists within the School environment is mind-blowing. Throughout the year, the commitment to rehearsals and trainings has produced amazing showcases of dedication and hard work. It all began with comedy sports, which was of course a hilarious and highly entertaining event.
Next, the Middle School musical, How to Eat Like a Child, displayed the talent of the Year 7s and 8s, who produced a dazzling performance that captured the hearts of every audience member. The year progressed with many musical performances and recital nights, including the Quarry Concert and Band Festivals. I strongly believe that “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” and this quote by Plato has been captured in the many breathtaking musical performances from the various ensembles.
Dance, Drama and Art have been exceptional this year. The Senior School girls and the Middle School Dance Collective worked extremely hard to put on sensational performances at the dance showcase, Spectrum, which demonstrated pieces from a variety of genres including ballroom, tap, jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop. The Drama girls produced many brilliant performances such as the Year 12 curriculum production, Tales of the Suburban Road, and the Year 11 curriculum production, Secret Bridesmaids’ Business. In Term 3, the 2013 visual art exhibition, Part of Me,

presented the work of talented artists in Years 10, 11 and 12. We even saw the spectacular media films of our budding directors at the annual Jumpcut film festival.
Arts Day was of course my favourite day of the year, as it was an entire day dedicated to the Arts, where amazing School spirit was demonstrated and all the skits were full of pleasant surprises. The day began with my own Marilyn Monroe skit of ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’. This was then followed by the hilarious teachers’ skit and the House Dances, which were the perfect start to an entertainment filled day. Following this we saw many amazing performances, as well as the most incredible decorated cakes, photography, graphic design, films, woodwork, textiles and more. To end this delightful day was the annual House Choir competition in which the House Choir Co-ordinators worked extremely hard to make each song absolutely unique. I would also like to congratulate all the House Arts Co-ordinators, who made the day run as smoothly as possible. I believe that
Arts Day displays the true essence of the spirit of participation at PLC. It is a day where every student has the opportunity to unleash their inner creativity and display their hidden talents.
It was a delight and an honour to have been the Arts Captain at PLC for 2013. To come from a farm, where I performed mostly to cows and horses, to being the Arts Captain at an absolutely outstanding school, has been an amazing experience. I have had so much fun introducing new ideas such as ‘Creativity of the Month’ and ‘Battle of the Bands’ and I am very excited to see how arts at PLC will progress with the fabulous Arts Captain for 2014, Tessa Moon. I would like to thank the captains of the various art areas who have been such an amazing help this year and have done such a good job in their various roles.

Every person has a creative gift to share and should believe in themselves. So I would like to leave you with my favourite quote by the great Dr. Seuss: “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”
Grace Newton-Wordsworth, Arts Captain

“PLC teams have had more direction through the implementation of goal setting, which has helped to create a stronger team atmosphere.”

There has been a revolution in the sports culture at PLC this year. My aim as sports Captain for 2013 was to maintain participation levels across the 13 sports offered, whilst increasing the levels of competitiveness in Inter-school events.
This year PLC teams have had more direction through the implementation of goal setting, which has helped to create a stronger team atmosphere. One of the goals the Sports Department set was to collect 21 pennants from across different sporting areas. At the time of going to print, we have accumulated 18 pennants, with only three to go.
Our first goal of the year was to achieve a top three finish at the IGGSA swimming carnival. We did manage to achieve this, placing third overall and only a mere 22 points off second place. IGSSA records were set by the Year 10 medley relay team (Hadley Lindsey, Salwa Sadek, Emma Wittenoom and Olivia Moore) who lowered the record set in 1996 from 2:11.27 to 2:10.38.
The Year 10s also collected the first pennant for PLC in 2013, while other notable swims included the Year 12 medley relay team who came second on the night. Congratulations to all
the members of the swim squad who believed in our goal and fostered the friendly and positive culture that allowed us to band together as a team and achieve it. I must also note the contribution of the Year 12 swimmers, who showed exceptional leadership and sportsmanship throughout the season and were pivotal in inspiring the younger girls to believe we could succeed.
Two pennants were achieved in softball this year by the Junior D and E teams. In softball, PLC placed third overall. The Senior Bs achieved another pennant in water polo and as a School, we placed fourth overall. In volleyball we achieved an overall placing of second, a huge improvement from seventh last year, and the Senior D team and the Year 9/10 E team won pennants. In tennis, PLC also finished in second place, with pennants awarded to the Junior A and B teams as well as the Senior A and B teams. The netball girls won two pennants in the Junior F and H teams and the Year 7/8 B hockey team also collected a pennant for their performance. As a

School, we came fifth in netball and third in hockey. Cross-country was a tough but rewarding season and we placed seventh.
Rowing, perhaps the most renowned sport at PLC, enjoyed outstanding results during the 2013 season. In the IGSSA rowing season, PLC won the Head of the River First VIII race for the second consecutive year, as well as a swathe of accolades including trophies for the Champion School and for winning the season overall. We collected five pennants in rowing for all four regattas and the Head of the River event. The level of teamwork, commitment and camaraderie is clearly evident amongst the PLC rowers and this bond between the members of each crew is what sets us apart from the rest. The willingness to support and help each other through the hard yards is inspiring and watching every rower in the PLC zoot suit charge towards the finish line at the Head of the River with everything they physically had was testament to that.

Congratulations to Isobel Payne on being elected Sports Captain for 2014. I have full confidence that the future of sport at PLC is in capable hands and she will do an incredible job motivating all the girls to achieve their potential. While Isobel will be at the helm of sport next year to support and guide PLC to the top across the board in all facets of sporting endeavours, it is up to each and every student to give their absolute all in each sport they participate in. Do what you love, and love what you do. Breathe passion into each of the sports you are involved in, lift each other up and dare to dream. Set goals, and turn those dreams into reality.
I thank each and every one of you for your level of participation and commitment to sport this year, whether it was at an Inter-House, Inter-School, state, national or international level. It all contributes to the amazing culture and atmosphere of sport at PLC. Remember girls, individually we are a drop, but together we are an ocean!
Jessica Moore, Sports Captain

PRESBYTERIAN LADIES’ COLLEGE

A A House is a home when you are a member of Baird, Carmichael, Ferguson, McNeil, Stewart and Summers.

every year brings about new challenges, but facing them with the fun and supportive Baird house made any challenge seem something to look forward to this year.
The exceptional display of dedication was a perfect reflection of our motto ‘Participation’. Taking the Swimming Carnival as an example, Baird girls jumped in the pool and performed at their best, full of Baird pride. A special mention must go to Martha Cornwell (Year 11 runner-up Champion Girl) and Aryaan Horne (Year 10 Diving Champion).
Cross-country was the next sports event and armed with coloured wristbands, the girls flooded through the finish line. The outstanding participation of all the ‘Bairdians’ contributed to our third consecutive victory. Congratulations to our Champion girls, Isadora Rakich (Year 7), Eliza Rakich (Year 10) and Alexandra O’Brien (Year 12) as well as our runners-up, Martha Cornwell (Year 11) and Leila Folland (Year 12).
The Athletics Carnival began a drizzly day, however despite the wind and rain, the defining orange was seen all around the stadium, on the track, in the field and among the stands. Well done to Alexandra O’Brien (Year 12) for another amazing achievement of runner-up Champion Girl.

The Inter-House sport events require a lot of organisation and without House Sport Co-ordinators, Alexandra O’Brien and Kendall Foulds, they would not have been as successful as they were.
There were many art competitions this year. To start with, House Improvisation brought out the inner drama queen in us all, with Amaani Alikhan, the Performing Arts Co-ordinator, motivating and igniting our creative spark. Under the help and guidance of Alma Jovanovic, our Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator, our season was very successful with the Year 9s and 12s winning the debating grand finals.
The buzz of Arts Day excited all the girls, with unbelievable decorated cakes and tarts, photography and many more creative entries, not to forget entertaining performance items and House Choir conducted by House Choir Co-ordinator Maisie Stein.
Our angelic hymn followed by the enchanting song ‘The Circle of Life’ won many hearts and was awarded second place – a definite highlight of the day.
In 2013, Baird had a fun-filled and vibrant year, full of Inter-House events. From the arts to sport to academics, the girls have all demonstrated incredible participation. Thanks to Kelly Irving, our Multimedia Coordinator, we have been able to capture these memories. To the Baird class of 2013, we can certainly be reminded of our pledge to be ‘Baird to the Bone’. It has been an exhausting but worthwhile year of coming together, encouraging one another and sharing the honour of belonging to Baird House.
My best wishes to Shireen Pandher, 2014 House Captain. Baird House is a unified team, each one of us a support to another, which creates the Baird legacy that will always live on!
Lucy Yang, Baird House Captain

the year 2013 – what a year it’s been for the legendary Carmichael house! every one of the blue-clad girls has exemplified our motto ‘Play the Game’ through their exceptional participation and house spirit. Our commitment, pride and sense of fun have made me truly proud to have led this amazing house.

The year kicked off with the Swimming Carnival at Challenge Stadium, where the rest of the School was able to witness the exuberant levels of blue pride emanating from our stands. While we placed a solid fifth overall, it is clear that our eagerness to participate – to dive, jump or flop into that pool – made it an enjoyable day. Special congratulations to the amazing Hadley Lindsay for taking out Champion Girl for Year 10. Some outstanding personal results in the diving pool resulted in one of our proudest moments of the year –Carmichael winning first place! We applaud Olivia Triglavcanin (Year 8) and Mia Simpson (Year 9) as Diving Champions, as well as Britt Doney (Year 10) and Olivia Hasel (Year 11) as runners-up.
Next on the agenda was CrossCountry, a gruelling but no doubt successful day for all who participated. It was great to see the blur of blue shirts crossing the finish line and we were thrilled to achieve a very close second place for the Senior School Trophy and an impressive fourth overall.
The Athletics Carnival was the final display of Carmichael’s talent and spirit on the sporting field. A sea of blue shirts and face paint could be seen running, jumping and throwing their way through a great day of competition. The willingness to participate by all the girls in blue saw Carmichael receiving some fantastic results, including an extremely close second place for the Senior School Trophy and a well-deserved third place overall.
Finally the infamous Arts Day arrived and with it a crowd of ‘Carmichleans’ ready to do their House justice by shimmying, shaking and grooving us to victory. We started the day by receiving first place in the Senior School and Middle School House Dance competitions and I can honestly say I have never been prouder of our efforts. It was wonderful to be walking around the School throughout the day and witnessing Carmichael girls congratulating each other as they made their way to their next performances. Parents, teachers and students alike could see the array of Carmichael’s

creative talents – from woodwork to photography to decorated cakes. We finished the day with the long-awaited House Choir, led by our talented House Choir Co-ordinator Jenna Verryn. Our performance of Van Morrison’s ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ saw us achieve an outstanding third place, of which we’re extremely proud.
None of Carmichael’s outstanding results could have been achieved this year without the extraordinary leadership displayed by the House Co-ordinators. Samantha Brenz-Verca showed exceptional organisational skills as Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator and I must give a special mention to Tia Madalena (Year 10) for achieving first place in Public Speaking. The tireless leadership and organisation of the Sport Co-ordinators, Annie Simpson and Kate Schweizer, made every Inter-House sport event run smoothly and successfully – I can’t thank them enough. Emily Byrne did an outstanding job as Performing Arts Co-ordinator, organising and choreographing numerous pieces for

our favourite day of the year. A big thank you also goes to Kate Ventouras, our Multimedia Co-ordinator, for being savvy with a camera and keeping our wiki and House board up to date with stunning photos of us girls in blue.
To the amazing Year 12 Carmichael House Tutor group, I can’t express my gratitude for all your support and all the great memories I’ve collected with you over the years. To Dr Winning, our House Advisor, thank you for your ongoing spirit and amazing organisation – the House couldn’t have run without you. Lastly, thank you to Carmichael for making my final year at PLC so enjoyable. Your smiles and laughter made every House meeting a lot of fun and I will cherish the memories of this experience forever.
Good luck to the 2014 Carmichael Captain, Alice Seymour and I hope the 2014 cohort has as a great year.
Adelaide Crossing, Carmichael House Captain

From the very beginning of the year, Ferguson girls have given of their best in every aspect of house life, with high participation levels across the board. I’m so happy to say that especially the Year 7s have put their best feet forward in everything they have participated in and I have loved getting to know them. I’m sure they will do fabulously in the years to come.
We started the year with a bang at the Swimming Carnival. Despite not placing highly in the overall results, every girl swam their hardest and contributed through either swimming, cheering or diving. In Year 7, Anna Konowalous did tremendously well by taking out Champion Girl, as well as Bridget McConkey in Year 8 who came runner-up Champion Girl in the diving. Jessica Moore also managed to remain Champion Girl for her fifth consecutive year! Ferguson came second overall in diving, an excellent effort by everyone.
Cross-country was a fabulous day where we came second overall and gave Baird a real run for their money (excuse the pun). There was exceptional participation on the day: nearly every girl ran the 3km run and in Year 8, Alyssa Van Heurk claimed Champion Girl with runner-up going to Emily Bradley.
Finally, we finished Inter-House sports for the year with an event that had all girls in red cheering wildly – the Athletics Carnival, which we won! I was so incredibly proud of every girl that ran, threw, jumped and cheered and it all payed off. A special mention to Isabella Mizera (Year 7) and Bridget McConkey and Millie Evans (Year 8) who all came runner-up Champion Girls on the day. The carnival was certainly made special with both Year 12 relay teams winning their divisions, as these girls have run together since their Middle School years. A massive thank you to our Sports Co-ordinators, Sophie Clyne and Tara Dunhill, who have been incredible at every sports event by being so organised and encouraging the girls to give of their best and participate where possible.
Throughout the year, the girls have been involved in public speaking and debating and have performed excellently, led by our Debating and Public speaking Co-ordinator, Tess

Parker. Through our great participation, we won Year 11 debating and public speaking, as well our Year 9s receiving second in debating; a special mention also to Catherine Berry of Year 11 who was awarded best speaker. Throughout all these events we had our Multimedia Co-ordinator Holly Boston at the ready with a red camera, so a big thank you to her for capturing Ferguson’s successful moments!
Finally we had one of the best days of the year – Arts Day. Led by our Arts Co-ordinator, Lavinia Wehr, who did an absolutely fantastic job, Ferguson had a very successful day. It was incredible to walk around the School and see red in many of the art sections. Everyone did extremelmy well and I cannot be more proud, especially of the girls in House Dance who put in a tremendous effort that truly paid off. To finish the day we had House Choir, conducted by Deborah Fisher, who did an amazing job as our Co-ordinator by taking us through the well-loved ‘ABBA mash-up’.

Now that our next big adventure is around the corner, huge thanks goes to all the Ferguson Year 12s. We have had an incredible year, everyone stepped up as leaders and was so supportive of each other, which has made it an absolute honour to have led Ferguson. A big thank you also needs to go our House Advisor, Mr Saunders and to our House Tutor, Mrs Philpot for being there for us over the years; we’ve loved having you both and Ferguson just wouldn’t be the same without you! Good luck to the new Year 12s and to Grace Harris – I know you’ll do a fantastic job and lead Ferguson to victory! I have been so very proud and privileged to have had this amazing opportunity and the memories we’ve made will stay with me always. To my Year 12s always remember – we’re the ‘Girls On Fire!’

this year has been a terrific one for the ‘Mighty McNeilians’. From crazy costumes to the power of McNeil armstrong and our chicken-themed house Marching, it certainly has been a yellow year for all.

First up was the Swimming Carnival and the huge number of McNeil girls in the pool made it a really fantastic day for the House. We had many excellent results, with Salwa Sadek (Year 10) and Anna Ranford (Year 9) as runner-up Champion Girls, as well as Farrah Sadek (Year 9) who was the Year 9 Champion Girl. Salwa also attained a new record for the Year 10 50m Breastroke, which is an incredible achievement. Our success on the day was largely due to the dedication of our two top-notch Sport Co-ordinators, Sabina Fischer and Giorgia Callander. McNeil shone in debating and public speaking this year, under the superb guidance of our Co-ordinator Portia McDonald. We also did very well in many of the smaller events such as Inter-House Academics and House Improvisation. All of these special moments were captured brilliantly by our Multimedia Co-ordinator Ruby Frey and uploaded onto our regularly updated McNeil Wiki.
The Athletics Carnival was also a great day for McNeil. All the girls from the different Year groups accepted the challenge of trying new sports outside of their comfort zones, such as the dreaded hurdles race, in order to contribute to House spirit. Whilst participation was the main focus, our motto ‘Victory or Death’ was certainly evident in the number of McNeil Champions on the day. Runnerup Champion Girl went to Brianna Newnham (Year 10) and both Eloise Shaw (Year 7) and Tatjana Fischer (Year 8) were Champion Girls for their Year groups. The Middle School continued their winning streak with McNeil being awarded the Middle School trophy yet again! Overall we came second on the day, which is a wonderful achievement. Then of course there was Arts Day. As it was the last major event for the House, we really wanted to finish with a bang – and boy did McNeil do that!

Every section, both in the creative and performing arts, was flooded with McNeil entries. The success of the day was greatly due to the excellent leadership of Madeleine King, our Performing Arts Co-ordinator. She set the goal of at least one McNeil entry in every category and with her outstanding guidance we easily achieved this. However it is safe to say that the highlight of Arts Day was winning the House Choir competition. Felicity Eustance, our magnificent House Choir Co-ordinator, took a very organised and enthusiastic approach in running the choir this year. I think I can speak for everyone in saying that it was one of the best House Choirs that McNeil has ever been a part of.
But just as our House Choir song ‘Hello, Goodbye’ said, it is time for me to say goodbye and the rest of McNeil to say hello to many more years in this amazing House.
It’s been a privilege to lead the girls this year and even though there have been many times when I have embarrassed myself with my mediocre accents and poor jokes, they still laughed and smiled supportively. Thank you to Mrs Stewart who has been the most incredible House Advisor and always made sure I had everything organised and under control. Good luck to next year’s House Captain, Stella Brackenridge and to all the Year 12s of 2014 – you’ll have a great year. The rest of you, keep participating and striving for victory and your futures will be bright yellow.

‘Just stewart’ was our motto for the year, coming from the Nike advertisement ‘Just Do It’. this encapsulated the 2013 attitude in stewart house, with girls giving everything a go and putting themselves out of their comfort zones. all the stewart girls have been so much fun this year, which not only made my job as house Captain easy, but also really demonstrated how kind and cohesive this group of girls are.
We started off the year with the brilliant result of second place in our Swimming and Diving Carnival. Through our overall participation and endeavour we were able to achieve such an outstanding result. A big congratulations to the runner-up Champion Girl for diving in Year 7, Scarlett Downes, runner up Year 8 Champion Girl for swimming, Ali Edgar, Year 11 Champion Girl for diving, Sophie Henderson and Year 12 Champion Girl for diving, Jana Harvey. Our Sport Co-ordinators, Eliza Carre and Lauren Campbell, worked tirelessly at organising the numerous sporting events throughout the year. They were absolutely incredible at helping me with whatever I needed and I am forever grateful to them both.
Group Improvisation was introduced as a new Inter-House event this year. This was an extremely entertaining competition, with so many from Stewart giving it a go. This competition was one of the highlights of my year because of the exuberant atmosphere created by our hilarious green girls.

Their fun-loving and creative nature allowed the Middle School team to come first overall with the Senior School girls placing second, demonstrating the great effort by everyone. Our Multimedia Coordinator Robyn Stewart showed her artistic flare for photography at every opportunity; thank you for capturing such memorable moments at this and all Inter-House events.
Cross-country was a day where all the Stewart girls gave it a go. It was great to see everyone either sprinting, running, jogging or walking the 3km race. Even though it wasn’t our strongest performance as a House, individuals from Stewart did shine with runner-up Champion Girl from Year 7, Lucy Baddeley, Champion Girl for Year 9, Caitlyn Attwell and Champion Girl for Year 11, Annabel Watts.
The Athletics Carnival once again showed how the Stewart girls ‘Just do it’ as they all got involved and tried their best. Our sixth place did not reflect the effort put in by everyone, especially those girls that had to step into events

on the day. Massive congratulations to runner-up Champion Girl for Year 11, Annabel Watts and Champion Girl for Year 12, Lauren Campbell.
Outside the sporting arena, the ‘green machines’ shined with Hanneka Gerritsen guiding the Year 9 public speaking girls to victory, as well as both Year 10s and 11s achieving second place. There was such a high level of participation within the Debating and Inter-House Academics competitions.
Our green family engulfed the PLC grounds in both the creative and performing arts this year, with Stewart jumping into Arts Day with our usual participating spirit. The day began with Claudia Nathan, our Arts Coordinator, brilliantly leading the way with her funky moves and creative choreography in House Dance. With her organisation, Middle School came second and Senior School came third and this was a really great way to start the festive day. Thanks must also go to Isobel Szklarz, our House Choir Co-ordinator and Tess Stroud, Libby Cullen and Emma Krantz who

contributed to our House Choir performance immensely.
Thank you to Ms Honeychurch, who is an invaluable asset to Stewart House –words cannot describe how much I owe her. Her love and pride for Stewart is so evident in the huge amount of work she does for us all. Congratulations to Lucy Stewart, you will be an amazing House Captain and leader in the School. To the Year 12 ‘Stewartarians’ of 2014, keep up the Stewart pride and keep it green.
Finally to the most beautiful Year 12 group I could ask for, without your support and help I don’t know how I would have managed this year. I have been so fortunate to have been in Stewart for the last 13 years and it has been an honour and a privilege to be your House Captain and friend.
Gabrielle Hitchen, Stewart House Captain

What a wonderful year it has been for the girls in purple! 2013 was full of fantastic sporting and artistic achievements and, even more importantly, incredible displays of house spirit from the summers family.

Summers tasted the sweet delights of success in our triumphant performance at the Swimming Carnival. New girls were gently folded into the Summers House mix as a plethora of purple caps were victorious in the pool. Selena Ballesteros (Year 7) and Miriam Hedges (Year 12) put on a beautiful display in the diving, both achieving runner-up Champion Girl. Congratulations to our Year group swimming Champion Girls, Olivia Dry (Year 7), Emma Warburton (Year 8), Arielle Downes (Year 11) and especially Sophie Foulkes for leading the swimming in Summers House with the sensational achievement of runnerup Champion Girl in Year 12.
The purple shirts were once again out in force at the Cross-country Carnival with a great display of House spirit as everyone put in their best effort. The Athletics Carnival then proved another fun day of enthusiasm and participation for the girls. Our champions included Selena Ballesteros (runner-up Year 7), Charlotte Hill (Champion Girl Year 9) and Sharni Webster (runner-up Year 10).

Congratulations to everyone who participated on the day – whether it was running, jumping or throwing, the Summers girls wore their purple shirts with pride. A huge thank you to Stephanie Gallagher and Siobhan Johnston, our Sport Co-ordinators, your organisation, dedication and general enthusiasm to sport in Summers House has been fantastic this year and the successes of the House are a credit to you both.
I see marching as one of the pinnacles of sporting achievement at PLC. With the Year 12s taking a rather dictatorial approach, the Summers girls shone down the athletics track with their heads held high and their purple shirts radiant. Congratulations Summers House on the fantastic achievement of first place – we really showed the other Houses what it means to stride in style! This year, Summers has not only excelled in sporting endeavours but has participated in the Arts with skill and enthusiasm. Across Middle and Senior School, all of the debaters and public speakers performed
exceptionally. Congratulations to Eve Bramley, our hugely talented Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator, who has led by example in every sense. Thank you also to Bella LeMessieur for your wonderful multimedia skills. Arts Day once again proved to be a highlight of the year for Summers House as all pursued each endeavour with uncontained enthusiasm. Whether it was the incredible cakes, the inspiring dancing or the amazing singing, our Summers family committed to everything with pride and most importantly a smile. The House Dance competition proved a highlight, with purple tulle filling the stage and Mr Scholten’s incredible moves being a highlight. A huge thank you to Mr Scholten for this and for everything you have done for us purple girls over the years, it wouldn’t have been the same without you. Special mentions to Bella Vinten, our Performing Arts Co-ordinator and Jessica Murray, our House Choir Co-ordinator, for everything they did leading up to Arts Day. You both had such massive jobs

and the successes of the purple girls prove that your efforts were nothing but extraordinary.
Alongside me this year has been an inspirational group of Year 12s, who I could not possibly have survived the year without. Thank you for everything you have done for the House and I know that you will approach the future full of the confidence, enthusiasm and spirit that is the essence of Summers.
To Mrs Walker, our second mother, a simple thank you for putting up with us! You have been supportive and enthusiastic and we couldn’t have survived these years without you. Ms Neame, you have been a fabulous new addition to Summers and the purple girls are lucky to have you.
I leave Summers House full of confidence that the 2014 Summers House Captain will lead you with enthusiasm and dedication.
Congratulations Emilie Ong and I hope your year will bring you as much joy and happiness as mine did. A big final thank you to all the girls in Summers

who have been a vital part of my life at PLC. I have loved getting to know you all and it has been a privilege and an honour to have been your House Captain. Keep wearing your purple shirts with pride and enjoy your years in the best House at PLC!

Ephemera
This moment fleets to its feet and walks. Sediment falls and darkens, it is hoping to solidify, a foundation for others. The attraction and yearning, does its job and roams across the savanna, or from one street to the next. The urge is to hold tight, make permanent the summer’s heat, fix it in sight, write about it, paint, sculpt, make it last.
Call out the apostates, saints of No, six in a row, tour them through the great works, the immortal loves, stand beneath the arch’s sway, say this will last, these will last, and if not they will be remembered, and if not they were here that moment before we turned away.
Roland Leach
