Open Garden Day Programme 2025

Page 1

Open Garden Day

We respectfully acknowledge Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as traditional owners and custodians of this land on which we stand. We pay our respect to Elders past, present, and emerging. Presbyterian Ladies’ College values our place in their ancestral lands nestled upon the ancient pathways or trails of Wardun Beelier Bidi, linking Derbal Yiragan (Swan River) with Wardun (Indian Ocean). We acknowledge the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and non-Indigenous Australians to the education of all

and people in this country.

From the Principal

Open Garden Day continues to be one of the most cherished traditions in the PLC calendar. It is a day when our community comes together to celebrate not only the beauty of nature, but also the generosity and connection that define our College.

This year, as we celebrate PLC’s 110th year, the significance of community feels especially powerful. For over a century, our story has been shaped by the contributions of those who came before us, and by the strong ties that unite us today. Open Garden Day embodies that same spirit – neighbours opening their gates, volunteers giving their time, and visitors joining together in a celebration of beauty, connection, and shared purpose.

We are deeply grateful to the Peppermint Grove community who so graciously open their gardens for us all to enjoy. Your generosity ensures this day remains a true highlight of the year. My sincere thanks also go to the Open Garden Day Committee and PLC Parents, whose dedication, creativity, and countless hours of work make this event possible.

To all our visitors – welcome. May today inspire you with beauty, connect you with community, and remind us all of the joy that comes when we gather together.

43 Leake Street

Step into a garden that feels alive with personality. The front lawn is punctuated by a striking Florida Swamp tree, a sculptural Chinese tallow, and a show-stopping Cercis canadensis that bursts into a cloud of pink blossom each spring.

Follow the path to a charming side courtyard where a single Mexican rose marks your arrival. Here, colour abounds. This courtyard garden was once a succulent and gravel garden – even the now-restored water feature had been filled in as a succulent bed. The owners have restored these beds and water feature to its former glory and now they teem with life. The garden beds are brimming with ageratum and salvias. Oversized dragonflies keep watch overhead, though they do little to deter the mischievous possums who make this garden their playground.

Victorian influence is everywhere: paniculata hydrangeas, may bush, Persian lilies, hollyhocks, chocolate vines, climbing hydrangeas and clematis with deep purple blooms create a layered tapestry of form and colour. Overhead, a ginkgo tree presides – its fan-shaped leaves turning a brilliant golden yellow in autumn.

Underfoot, creeping thyme softens the pavers as you move toward the rear of the property. Olive trees guide the way to a tranquil back garden planted with rhododendrons, true geraniums, hellebores, and a lush carpet of pachysandra. Beyond this, dogwoods and a collection of hibiscus species – including a native cottonwood hedge – frame the space, underplanted with ferns and clivias. Another Chinese tallow

provides a final, elegant focal point, drawing the journey to a close.

This is a garden shaped not just by design but by love and expertise. The owner’s mother thoughtfully guides the planting selections, while her father brings a wealth of practical know-how – from fertilising tips to pest management –ensuring the garden thrives season after season.

This is a garden designed for wandering, pausing, and delighting in every turn – a true celebration of seasonal beauty, family collaboration, and thoughtful planting.

34 Irvine Street

The Birches

This garden has been reimagined into a breathtaking sanctuary, the result of a bold new build and a thoughtful design brief that marries Japanese tranquillity with Brazilian vibrancy. The outcome is a space that feels both sculptural and lush – a celebration of contrast and harmony.

Step through the wrought-iron gates of The Birches – named for the elegant Silver Birch trees gracing the entrance – and you’ll find a landscape designed to delight at every turn.

One of the most striking features is the magnificent Chinese Tallow, carefully relocated from the original garden to a commanding position. Nearby, jacarandas and forest pansies provide seasonal colour, while the understorey comes alive with hardy, textural plantings of cycads, Pittosporum tobira ‘Miss Muffet’, Alternanthera ‘Little Ruby’, Philodendron ‘Xanadu’, and New Zealand rock lilies.

Bamboo-lined fences and shaded borders underplanted with Zoysia (no-mow grass) lead into a broad grass expanse, punctuated with Flame Trees (Poincianas). These striking specimens offer shade in summer and a sculptural presence that invites winter sunlight. Throughout the property, more than 30 tonnes of Donnybrook stone have been artfully placed, their forms adding a distinctly Japanese aesthetic.

Closer to the pool, repetition of plantings creates a sense of rhythm and calm. Feature trees include frangipanis and even a topiary hibiscus cottonwood, while a flowering Singapore orchid

adds an exotic flourish. Kentia palms, Raphis palms, Reed palms, Golden cane palms, Elephant ears, tractor seat plants, Monstera deliciosa commonly called fruit salad plant, Ajuga ground cover, Brazilian tree ferns, crinum river lily, and heliconiums deliver the lush, tropical feel reminiscent of Brazilian gardens.

The Birches is a garden of resilience and renewal – a place where sculptural beauty, botanical diversity, and thoughtful design combine to create a restorative landscape.

27 View Street

Step through the front gate and you are immediately greeted by the bold form of giant white Crinum lilies ‘Crinum amoenum’, punctuated by magnolias. Garden beds filled with roses, kangaroo paws, and Indian hawthorn ‘Rhaphiolepis indica’ add texture and colour, while star jasmine climbs along the fence, filling the air with fragrance. Everywhere you look, sculptures add an element of surprise and delight.

A massive pot designed by the homeowner – crafted from reclaimed slate in a metal frame – cradles Caesalpinia ferrea (Leopard tree), its branches adorned with festoon lights and protected by a sculpture of the family’s beloved dog – a Hungarian Vizsla, creates a striking focal point. This slate masterpiece ties seamlessly into the garden’s slate-edged beds, bringing harmony to the space.

Nearby, an espaliered Camellia sesanqua is underplanted with clouds of white hydrangeas. Behind the carport, repurposed cone crusher rims have been cleverly transformed into planters, softened with philodendron ‘Xanadu’ and more magnolias. Be sure to glance down the side of the house, where a living wall of greenery forms an impressive vertical garden.

As you make your way to the rear of the property, you will pass giant tractor rims, reclaimed and repurposed in a mother-anddaughter project, now brimming with new plantings. Nandina domestica and an espaliered climbing rose guide you toward the rear garden, where a majestic plane tree casts dappled shade over an inviting entertaining area. A dragon tree takes pride of place by the infinity-edge pool, and beds of birds of paradise complete the space.

Descending the stairs, a potted crepe myrtle softened with cascading dichondra silver falls marks the way to a tranquil lower garden. Beds of cottonwood hibiscus, lush tractor seat plants ‘ligularia’, and New Zealand rock lilies create a sheltered, calming retreat. Lush carpets of dichondra surrounds pavers and raised beds of herbs and vegetables.

Another sculpture – a life-sized clown – keeps watch over this space, while the repetition of Indian hawthorn links the design back to the front garden. Fruit trees of fig, lemon, and lime ensure this landscape is not only breathtaking, but also wonderfully productive.

The history of 27 View Street can be viewed on page 31 of this programme.

37B Keane Street

Step through the gate and be welcomed by the delicate blooms of Indian hawthorn, setting the tone for a garden filled with structure and surprise. At the front, extensive hedges of viburnum provide both privacy and a lush green backdrop. A vibrant bed bursts into life with irises, statice, alstroemerias, silver ragwort, daisies, Convolvulus cneorum (silverbush), and westringia – a painter’s palette of colour and texture.

Towering trees anchor the design, including a striking specimen mirrored in the rear garden, alongside a graceful ornamental pear that adds elegance through every season. Pink Indian hawthorn leads you along the path toward the back of the property, where more alstroemerias in every shade contrast beautifully with silver ragwort and the vibrancy of African daisy ‘Purple Sun’, all encircling an entertaining deck.

Across from the deck stands the quaint sculpture, The Siblings, imported from the UK and beautifully flanked by a variegated hibiscus. Potted highlights add personality with a lime tree, roses, and bougainvillea bringing height and bursts of colour.

Beyond, azaleas bloom beside a serene water feature, perfectly positioned just beyond a gazebo draped in grapevine. It is a space designed for lingering, quiet reflection – where flowers and structure combine to create a garden that is both refined and inviting.

Guest Speaker, Clare Netherway, will be talking about 'Plant Pests and Diseases' in this garden at 1.00 pm.

Homemade Lemonade available in the garden.

History: 27 View Street

Though his parents, Frederick and Sarah (nee Glyde), married in WA in 1872, Harold Percy Farmaner was born in 1876 after they returned to England. Frederick was a successful merchant and business partner of Walter Padbury and mysteriously drowned in Capetown in 1878. Sarah returned to WA where, in 1882, she married her widowed brother-inlaw William Adkinson, the first Inspector of Schools in WA. Harold grew up to be an accountant at Perth's GPO, and a gentleman. When land was released for sale in Peppermint Grove in 1893, he was one of the original buyers.

In late 1897, Harold married Charlotte Elizabeth Spencer at St George's Cathedral and soon built their home on View Street. They moved in, in around 1898. For many years, theirs was the last home before Irvine Street.

Harold and Charlotte's marriage did not produce any children, but they doted on their three nieces, Eileen, Molly and Peggy,

and their nephew Harold. They also played very competitive golf at Cottesloe and enjoyed extensive travel, leasing their home when away.

Charlotte died on New Year's Day 1944. Harold (then 72) remarried, briefly, in 1948 to widow Florence Pearl Jones (46) and in around 1950 he moved into Perth's Shaftesbury Hotel. When he died in 1951 he left a third of his modest £10,566 estate (around $690,000 today) to his only surviving niece Molly, his nephew Harold and a friend, with the rest divided between half a dozen worthy charities.

New Zealand born Catherine Dampier-Crossley married Robert (Robin) Cameron in 1947. They lived around the corner in Keane Street and bought the home from Harold's estate in the early 1950s. In time they had three children who all came to PLC Kindergarten. Robin died in 1980 and later, Catherine remarried to Frank Cooke of Tammin, but retained her home until she died in 2009 aged 86.

The current owners, only the third in its history, bought the property from Catherine's estate. They have since faithfully renovated and extended this beautiful home, one of the oldest in the area.
