Flag football is no longer just a casual playground pastime. Across South Carolina and much of the United States, it’s quickly becoming one of the fastest-growing organized sports, particularly among youth and female athletes.
Friday night lights still shine bright in South Carolina with five public school divisions and a private school division playing for state championships. As safety concerns shift the landscape of traditional

tackle football, and interest in inclusive, fast-paced alternatives grows, flag football has surged in popularity. This momentum is being fueled by national support, local grassroots programs, and increasing opportunities for girls to take the field and shine.
At the core of flag football’s growth is its accessibility. Unlike tackle football, which requires expensive gear, contact-specific training, and
often a higher injury risk, flag football is a non-contact version of the sport that only requires a football, some belts with flags, and a safe playing field. The low barrier to entry makes it appealing to schools, parks departments, and parents alike.
Equally important is the safety factor. As parents become more cautious about the long-term effects of concussions and repetitive head trauma in contact sports, flag football provides a safer alternative while still teaching core football skills like passing, catching, teamwork and strategic play.
National visibility is also playing a role. In 2022, the NFL partnered with Nike and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to sponsor women’s collegiate flag football programs. The league also promotes flag football through its NFL FLAG initiative, which serves more than 600,000 youth athletes across all 50 states. And in 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced flag football will debut as an official sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, bringing global legitimacy to a sport that was once an intramural side activity.
From small towns to urban areas, communities across South Carolina are investing in flag football programs— often as part of broader efforts to improve youth and adult engagement and physical activity. City of Charleston Recreation offers more than 35 8 x 8 men’s, 11 x 11 men’s and women’s 8 x 8 leagues. North Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation offers a Fall league for kids 7-10. Greenville Parks & Recreation has two adult leagues for flag football.. The co-ed 6 x 6 and the new men’s 5 x 5 are popular. Regardless of the season, flag football is being played in South Carolina.
Perhaps the most compelling chapter in the flag football story is the explosion of girls’ participation.
Historically sidelined in traditional football settings, girls now have growing opportunities to compete, excel and even earn college scholarships through flag football. The NFL and Nike’s Girls Flag Football Grant Program has helped launch new middle and high school girls’ leagues across multiple states, supplying uniforms, equipment, and funding to get teams started.

March 2025 saw York County off the first girls flag football league in South Carolina. The Carolina Panthers partnered with the York County middle schools in a club level program. Fourteen teams with 15 athletes each will compete over a sevenweek season with two games per week. Plans are to expand the program to the high school level and have the sport sanctioned in South Carolina. To get the league started, the Carolina Panthers donated $49,000 which went toward uniforms, equipment and coach and player development.

At the college level, Conference Carolinas has 14 girls teams playing in three divisions. Conference Carolinas was the first Division I or II to sponsor women’s flag football at the varsity level.
Girls are also thriving in co-ed environments. National competitions like the NFL FLAG Championships, held annually at the Pro Bowl, showcase elite-level female players, many of whom start as early as age 6. The sport’s inclusive design allows girls to shine in roles as quarterbacks, receivers, and defenders.
With its Olympic debut looming in 2028 and strong institutional backing from the NFL, flag football is poised for even greater growth in the coming years. More school districts are expected to adopt girls’ programs, while co-ed and recreational leagues expand in both urban and rural areas.
For communities, investing in flag football isn’t just about sports—it’s about youth development, equity, and providing healthy, fun alternatives for kids and teens. For girls, it’s about finally having the chance to take the field, compete, and be seen.
Looking for a field for your next flag football competition? South Carolina has you covered!

Regardless of where you want to go within South Carolina, you are five hours or less from your destination. With that in mind rights holders, here just a few of the Palmetto State’s favorite attractions to share.
Falls Park on the Reedy is a beautiful urban green space in Greenville right downtown. There are spectacular waterfalls and gardens each accented by several pieces of public art throughout the park. The 345-foot Liberty Bridge was described by the structural manager of the builder as “an ultra-lightweight bridge which almost looks like it’s floating on air.”
Caesars Head State Park in Cleveland has one of South Carolina’s most famous natural landmarks.
The park’s namesake provides a panoramic view of the mountain country. On a clear day, you can see Greenville. Another landmark is the Raven Cliff Falls, an overlook after a two-mile hike. The park also has a halfdozen additional falls.
The South Carolina Botanical Garden is on the campus of Clemson University. This 294-acre garden features nature trails, ponds, woodlands and exhibits at the Bob Campbell Geology Museum and creative works at the Fran Hanson Discovery Center. Not to be missed is the 300+ year old historic Hanover House.
Campbell’s Historic Covered Bridge near Greenville in Landrum was
constructed of wood between 1909 and 1911. It is the only remaining covered bridge in South Carolina. The state once had 20 covered bridges. Today, the bridge still crosses Beaverdam Creek and is surrounded by an 18-acre park. There is a picnic area, an old grist mill and home site and a short nature trail with interpretive signage.
BMW Zentrum in Greer is both the auto manufacturer’s information center and museum. There are about 25 cars and a few motorcycles on display in the museum’s permanent collection along with regularly scheduled visiting collections. There is a video of the actual assembly from the beginning to driving the vehicle off the line.

Located along the Saluda River, the sprawling 170-acre Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia is South Carolina’s most visited gated attraction. By the numbers there are more than 1,000,000 visitors, more than 3,000 animals and 5,700-plus plants. There are birds, fish and invertebrates, mammals and reptiles. It has six themed gardens and was hailed by HGTV as one of the great 20 public gardens. Throughout the attraction there are hands-on activities for all the family to enjoy.
Fans of the National Park Service need to cross off Congaree National Park from their to-do list. It is here you will find the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood remaining in the southeastern United States. Check the boardwalk construction updates for partial closings as construction is ongoing in 2025 and 2026. There is plenty to do from hiking and fishing to canoeing and kayaking. The ranger led programs are always outstanding.
Located just outside of Columbia, Lake Murray is known as the “Jewel of South Carolina.” Located on the Saluda River, this man-made lake offers fishing as one of the most popular activities. Televised fishing tournaments make a regular appearance with Largemouth Bass being the target. Striped Bass along with more than a dozen other varieties are popular.
As the excitement builds for the America 250 celebration in 2026, a visit to Historic Camden should be on the to do list of every South Carolina visitor. The Revolutionary War Visitors Center and the 104-acre Living History Park in Camden is a perfect for exploring the all-important Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. Located 40-miles east of Columbia, Historic Camden is a must experience.
South Carolina State Museum is located in Columbia and housed in the historic Columbia Mills Building. The state’s largest museum spans four floors with interactive exhibits featuring art, cultural history, natural history, cience and technology. You will be amazed at South Carolina’s contributions to our nation.
The Charleston Historic District serves as a living museum of the past. Some of the most recognizable landmarks are the Battery and White Point Garden. Situated at the most southern tip of the peninsula the former offers views of the harbor and Fort Sumter in the distance. The antebellum mansions are a reminder of the city’s history and wealth. The Garden is public and commemorates the city’s past. The 13 colorful Rainbow Row houses are likely the most photographed attraction. The Charleston City Market dates back to the 1790s and is still a shopping hub. Myrtle Beach with its 60 miles of wide sandy beaches, is a classic family vacation hub. It features world-class theaters and great dinner shows, along with live music throughout the area. Award -winning water parks and the mini-golf capital of the world are always fun. There are charming coastal towns all along the Grand Strand. Explore beyond the beach with jet skis, hang gliders, pier and charter fishing. Regardless of the season, there is always something in bloom at Brookgreen Gardens.
Well known for its pristine beaches, Hilton Head Island has been named one of the top family beach destinations in the country. Off the beach whether your preference is on the water or in the water, there is an activity for you. There are dolphin
tours, boat rentals, fishing charters, kayaking and paddle boarding. With its designation as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community, Hilton Head Island is a great place to spin your wheels. There are more than 15,000 bicycles to rent.
A hidden gem along South Carolina’s coast is Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet. Less crowded than the more popular Myrtle Beach, there are still three miles of unspoiled beach. Take a stroll along the park’s causeway to view birds and alligators that call the marsh home. Take a docent tour of Atalaya, a National Historic Landmark. The home and retreat of Anna Hyatt and Archer Huntington. Swim, fish, relax or learn a new hobby like kayaking, or birding.

Not to be outdone on any other front, Burton Wells Park provides 300 acres of space for team sports like baseball, basketball and soccer.

The Burton Wells Park and Recreation Center encompasses a 300-acre recreational complex that features three baseball and softball complexes as well as two outdoor batting cages. It also features a football field, a playground and a new Xtreme Ninja Course.Passive use facilities, picnic areas, walking and nature trails, lakes and an interpretive botanical garden.

Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort is one of the best South Carolina beach resorts, offering a wide selection of Fripp Island resort rentals. It is also home to a pair of glorious golf destinations in the Ocean Point and Ocean Creek courses, both at Fripp Island Resort. Set against the lively backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean on 10 of its 18 holes, Ocean Point offers sweeping vistas designed by George Cobb.

Dataw Island epitomizes
Lowcountry golf, where two 18-hole courses take full advantage of the beautiful natural surroundings. Traverse grounds covered in live oaks that date back hundreds of years as well as Civil War-era ruins. The Cotton Dike course was renovated in 2011 and features emerald fields and fairways with a winding creek.

One of the top military courses in the world, this course has a unique history that can’t be missed. Each hole is named after a legendary United States Marine who either trained or stationed on Parris Island. As you step onto the par-72 layout that winds its way along salt marsh wetlands and deep-water creeks, you are immediately entranced by the course’s rich history and challenging layout.

The sports tourism and events industry has never been stronger than it is today. For our 11th year of the Sports Planning Guide trends article, we will highlight some of the reasons why, and what we see coming in the New Year. We hope you enjoy this year’s edition of the top 10 trends in sports tourism.
1
Mega Events – Our country is about to host two of the largest events the sports world has to offer. The World Cup next year and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will offer opportunities for destinations large and small to plug in.
2
Artificial Intelligence – The industry is just starting to sort out what AI can accomplish. While we are a bit skeptical of the overall (potentially negative) impact that may occur, this one is worth tracking and learning more about what this technology can and cannot do in our space.
3
Trade Show Relevance – The destinations and rights holders we serve are becoming more intentional in how they spend their time and resources. The normal speed dating model at the various trade shows that worked well 15 years ago is tired. More direct relationship bridge building between the relevant parties is becoming the norm. We recommend that everyone plug into our national association (SportsETA) and all that they offer throughout the year, and potentially one additional Fall show. Then augment that with additional biz dev technologies and in person outreach through FAMs and sales missions.
4
Intentional Use of Data – Our team at HUG is being asked more and more to chime in on the value of an event, from both the destination and event owner view. Today, there are more data sources that can help analyze a
sporting activity or event than in the past. We can geofence, track credit card and cell phone data, where those people came from and where they go. While DMOs have been mining this data for years, event owners are just now coming to the party. Leveraging these data pools is a major opportunity for destinations and rights holders alike.
5
DMOs Leading on Facilities – If the tourism leaders in a destination don’t take the lead on driving facility development, it’s likely nobody will. The top sports tourism communities we work with are leading the thought process, planning, funding, and programming for their venue “tool kit.” The proactive destinations on facilities will win in the long run.
6
Investment in “Silent Sports” –
Individual outdoor leisure sports did quite well during the pandemic - think canoe, kayak, paddleboard, golf, archery, trail running and cycling. All these sports grew during the pandemic and the destinations we serve are asking about how they keep that momentum rolling. How do we turn our trails into “competition” venues? What waterway access do we need to accommodate the leisure traveler and ALSO the competition level visitor? These questions come to our team on nearly every project we work on yet were not on the radar in most destinations five years ago.
7
Enhanced State Alliances – There are more state sports tourism alliances today than at any time in our industry’s history. The visit “insert city here” way of doing business has largely given way to come partner with “insert STATE name.” It’s a big shift, and a positive one for collaboration across the sports tourism community.
The last three are carryovers from last year.

8
The Portal – The NCAA has launched its latest bid portal with new timelines. With facility development at the top of mind in many destinations we serve, who can get their venue offering to the finish line in time for this round (or the next round) of bids?
9
Statewide Alignment – Our team at HUG has seen a lot more intentional involvement in sports tourism from the state level across the country. There is more strategic thought and political influence around sports tourism than in the past. We are also seeing a much higher level of engagement from various state tourism offices. It seems like state tourism leaders have figured out that a majority of those they serve (DMOs
and CVBs) count sports tourism as a top priority. Good to see the higher ups leaning into our industry.
10
Highest Best Use – The three biggest parks/city trends we see across the country on the facility side are: (1) get pools off our books, (2) get golf courses off our books, and (3) convert tennis courts to pickleball. The theme here is what is our highest and best use of the real estate and facilities we have.
Thanks for all you do for your organizations and those you serve. Best wishes for an awesome 2026.
Yours in Sport, Jon
