STRUGGLING WITH SPREADSHEETS? Here’s How Top Tour Operators Go Even Further
F
or decades, spreadsheets have been the unsung heroes of tour operations. They’re fast, flexible and familiar. From pricing tours to tracking payments, they’ve helped countless businesses stay organized and profitable. But as tour operations become more complex — with multiple suppliers, travelers, and changing itineraries — many operators are asking an important question: Are spreadsheets holding me back? Spreadsheets aren’t inherently bad, but using them for everything may be holding you back from the next level of efficiency and insight. Here are five areas where forward-thinking tour operators are evolving their approach.
1. You’re Spending More Time Managing Data Than Managing People Before diving into new tools, take a look at how your spreadsheets work today. How does data get in from traveler forms, emails, or manual entry? Are you copying and pasting details across tabs? Even well-organized spreadsheets can become fragmented when every team member maintains
their own version. Tour operator platforms connect functions like reservations, payments, itineraries and supplier management into a single system. The result: less time chasing numbers, more time nurturing clients and supplier relationships.
2. Small Errors Are Creating Big Problems Even the most careful teams can make small mistakes. A misplaced decimal, an outdated rate, or an accidental overwrite can ripple through multiple spreadsheets, affecting everything from margins to customer trust. Modern systems help by automating calculations, validating data, and maintaining version control. By lessening your reliance on spreadsheets you’re reducing their vulnerability while improving accuracy and consistency across the board.
3. Collaboration Shouldn’t Be This Hard Cloud-based spreadsheets have improved team access, but they
can still create confusion when multiple users make edits or when version histories get messy. Integrated platforms allow simultaneous updates with clear user tracking and permissions. Whether your team is in the same office or across continents they can view the same live data in real time. That clarity drives accountability and faster communication.
4. Growth Has Outpaced Your Tools Spreadsheets can handle a lot — some large operators still manage impressive volumes with them. But as business expands, the manual effort required grows exponentially. Modern tour operator systems scale seamlessly as you add more tours, destinations and team members into the fold. They automate repetitive tasks like centralized reporting, and help identify opportunities through built-in analytics. Instead of wrestling growth, you can start to focus on sustaining and steering it.
5. You Can’t See the Whole Picture When financials, operations, and marketing data live in separate files, it’s hard to get a clear picture of your performance. Modern systems provide dashboards that bring all your data together. This allows you to track profitability, forecast demand, and identify your top clients instantly. The Evolution from Tools to Systems Spreadsheets will always have a place in a tour operator’s toolkit, but the next generation of success depends on how well you connect and automate what surrounds them. Tour operators that are thriving today are turning to systems built for scale, collaboration and insight. In doing so, they’re freeing up more time to focus on what matters most: delivering unforgettable travel experiences. If you’ve known for a while that you have outgrown your spreadsheets… or worse, your spreadsheets have outgrown you by having more tabs than travelers on the tour, it’s time to take the next step. This doesn’t mean you have to revamp your entire operation, or spend more than you do now on operations to fit in cost of a new software package.
Stay tuned for our next article, offering ideas on how to understand various tech stacks and find a technology partner who can guide you along the journey.

As interest grows in domestic travel, townsized experiences, heritage tourism and nostalgia-driven itineraries, the Centennial offers a once-in-a-generation chance to elevate Route 66 from a scenic byway into a centerpiece of American travel.
Opportunities for destinations and group travel in Illinois
I
n 2026, America will celebrate three extraordinary milestones: the FIFA World Cup, the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 100th birthday of the iconic Route 66. For tour operators, travel advisors, and group planners, this convergence is more than a marketing opportunity, it’s a cultural moment that can redefine how people move, connect and experience the country. Among these celebrations, the Route 66 Centennial stands apart. It’s not just the anniversary of a road; it’s the celebration of an American journey. Nicknamed the “Mother Road” by John Steinbeck, Route 66 symbolizes adventure, resilience, and

From Chicago to Santa Monica, communities along Route 66 are preparing for travelers eager to reconnect with this legendary corridor. For Illinois, which hosts the first 301 miles of the road, stretching from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge at the Mississippi River, the Centennial is a powerful platform to highlight historical assets, roadside attractions, and the local businesses that bring the route to life. For group travel planners, the Centennial is an invitation to think beyond traditional bus tours. Curated, thematic experiences can blend past and future in compelling ways. Culinary itineraries featuring regional specialties, music-themed journeys tracing the sounds of the road, and art-focused tours celebrating murals and neon revival projects can appeal to travelers across generations.
The Route 66 Centennial isn’t just an anniversary — it’s a once-in-a-generation chance to transform America’s most iconic highway into a new centerpiece of travel, culture, and connection.

Planning ahead: Timing is everything
The planning cycle for 2026 is already underway. Group planners should secure accommodations, venues and attractions now, especially in smaller markets with limited inventory. Flexibility and creativity will be critical. In Illinois, communities are embracing public-private partnerships, popup activations, and legacy events designed specifically for the Centennial. This is also the right moment to invest in frontline staff training. Illinois will celebrate the Route 66 Centennial with a yearlong lineup of festivals, premieres and community events across the state. Highlights include Joliet’s national kickoff event on April 30, the Red Carpet Corridor Festival in early May, the Progressive Decades Party in McLean County June 6-7, and the world premiere of John Paget’sMain Street of America documentary film at seven locations in Illinois September 3-10. Additional milestones include Springfield’s 25th Mother Road Festival September 25-27, the Last 100 Miles Festival October 10-11, a statewide conference and epic celebration in Springfield hosted by the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway Association November 10-11, and four large-scale drone shows illuminating the sky along the Mother Road. With Chicago as a global gateway and a rich mix of communities along its stretch of the route, the state can serve as both the starting point and the emotional anchor of the Centennial experience. As we approach the 100th anniversary of Route 66, we can do more than commemorate history. We can build the future, mile by mile, story by story, group by group. Welcome to the start of the Mother Road.
Aligning Global Sporting Events with Culture-Driven Travel Trends BY KATHY NELSON and essential U.S. encounters like barbecue and jazz gave us the opportunity to tell a story that simply can’t be matched elsewhere. Kansas City is, both literally and figuratively, at the center of the American experience.
Sharing KC’s story
K
ansas City is a proud sports community. We have a deep history of competitive success and boundarybreaking athletic feats and the opportunity to welcome the world next summer will be another defining moment. As a destination, we’ll also benefit by aligning with broader industry trends and pursuing travelers in search of distinctive cultural experiences, both in 2026 and beyond. From the moment the FIFA World Cup 26™ bid process began, we knew there was a defining element that set Kansas City apart: our culture. A unique love of soccer, an undeniable spirit of Midwestern hospitality
“
This is the same story we’re proud to share with visitors from around the world, whether they’re joining the crowd for an American sports experience or taking an authentic look at the country’s roots. As kickoff approaches and Kansas City’s global presence grows, we’re being thoughtful about supporting industry professionals with guidance that incorporates World Cup-inspired experiences, no matter when guests arrive. First, Kansas City’s official FIFA Fan Festival™ is taking place on the grounds of the National WWI Museum and Memorial across multiple days of the tournament. Visitors have the chance to experience the excitement of the event throughout the summer, even if their travel plans don’t align precisely with one of Kansas City’s match dates. It’s a perfect opportunity to step inside one of our most storied institutions. The venue is the country’s officially designated World War I museum and contains an unparalleled collection of artifacts from the Great War.
Kansas City is both literally and figuratively at the center of the American experience. As the World Cup arrives, our story of sport, hospitality and heritage will resonate with travelers from around the world.
More broadly, the World Cup invites travelers who are discovering a region’s rich culture to explore more of KC—as the tournament takes place and all year long. Encounter UNESCO-recognized jazz here in Kansas City, blues in St. Louis, Beale Street in Memphis and Broadway in Nashville. Those looking to draw on the inspiration of true Americana can travel between cowtowns from KC to Dallas-Fort Worth, soaking in the open skies and Wild West iconography of Kansas and Oklahoma along the way.
Endless heartland encounters in 2026
Of course, we can’t let the essential factors that drive travel decisions fall by the wayside, especially as economic sensitivities persist. Kansas City’s offerings are affordable, from lodging and shopping to free museums and cultural institutions. We work hard to ensure potential visitors know our community’s gems are truly within reach, especially as they consider investing in extended trips across an entire region. We aren’t alone in the journey. Encounters with the American heartland will be nearly endless throughout 2026, as the World Cup coincides with the country’s sesquicentennial and the 100th anniversary of Route 66. We’re collaborating with partners at the Missouri Division of Tourism, Travel South USA and many other organizations to make multi-city and multi-state trip planning tools available at an entirely new level. In the year ahead, uniquely American moments will converge with a truly global soccer celebration. With distinct culture and diehard fans, Kansas City is at the center of it all, and we’re capitalizing on the chance to strengthen our travel resources in lasting ways as we continue welcoming domestic and global travelers to the Heart of America.

The Road Ahead: Oklahoma and the Route 66 Centennial BY TODD STALLBAUMER
A living showcase of Route 66 culture
A
s we approach the 2026 Route 66 Centennial, few opportunities rival what lies ahead for the group travel industry—and Oklahoma is ready to lead the celebration. For tour planners, this milestone represents far more than an anniversary. It’s a chance to tap into one of the most recognizable travel brands in the world and deliver authentic, high-value experiences that resonate with every kind of traveler. The 2026 milestone events taking place are an excellent way to create destination awareness and welcoming messages for all of the world. Not only do these events allow for an extraordinary amount of activities for groups to encounter, they create a dynamic that features areas that are sometimes overlooked. With the most drivable miles of Route 66 and a deep connection to its history, Oklahoma is at the center of that rediscovery.

DECEMBER 2025
The Oklahoma legislature has been an amazing partner in helping reshape and enhance our portion of the Mother Road. With nearly $30 million dollars in grants awarded to date, our state is featuring updated attractions, dazzling neon, new interpretation and an overhaul of the visitor experience. This investment has transformed Oklahoma into a living showcase of Route 66 culture. From neon-lit main streets and restored diners to interpretive museums and public art, we’ve reimagined the experience for today’s travelers. For tour operators, this revitalization opens countless packaging possibilities including heritage, culinary, music, outdoor recreation, or small-town Americana. Many of the activities for the upcoming celebrations will be event-driven (often free events) that operators can take advantage of for value-added itineraries. Specifically for the Route 66 Centennial, operators should consider 2026 as a marketing campaign for trips into 2027 and beyond. Consider this a launching board for the next 100 years. That forward view is essential. The centennial will spark tremendous global attention, but its value doesn’t end when the year does. Planners can use this surge of interest to build themed tours, regional segments or repeat departures that keep the Route 66 story evolving for years to come.

“
The centennial of Route 66 is more than a celebration of where we’ve been — it’s a roadmap for where we’re going.
A true authentic American experience
It’s also a good practice to see what is working or has worked for other travelers. Route 66 is a true authentic American experience that should be enjoyed. Looking at the route as multiple trips with multiple themes can make the experiences into multiple departures combining multiple states on each. You don’t have to complete the Route in one trip. That flexibility is what makes the Mother Road such a rich canvas for creativity. Operators might craft itineraries focusing on Oklahoma’s rhythm and blues heritage, culinary stops along historic diners, or regional festivals celebrating local culture. Others could connect Route 66 attractions with broader state highlights such as art districts, Native heritage sites, or outdoor adventures that complement the nostalgic journey. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to connect your travelers with America’s enduring spirit of adventure and discovery. The centennial of Route 66 is not just a celebration of where we’ve been; it’s a roadmap for where we’re going. The next hundred years of the Mother Road begin now, and we’re ready to welcome the world to Oklahoma.

America. Made in Virginia BY RITA MCCLENNY
W
e are incredibly proud to call Virginia the birthplace of America. When we travel abroad to recruit visitors, we lead with our nation’s story — and then connect it to the endless experiences travelers can enjoy here. History is our cornerstone, but it’s woven together with outdoor adventure, culture, and community. Ask anyone what comes to mind when they hear “Virginia,” and the number one answer is history. And when we mention “Virginia is for Lovers,” people immediately recognize it. It’s one of the most enduring tourism slogans in the world. When it was first launched in 1969, the original line was
“
“Virginia is for History Lovers.” That spirit still guides us today, especially as we prepare for America’s 250th anniversary. Our commemorative slogan of America. Made in Virginia. speaks perfectly to that heritage. We view this milestone as a statewide commemoration. Every one of Virginia’s 90+ counties has a role to play in telling its story. We like to say that history isn’t confined to 1776, but it’s happening every day in Virginia. To empower local storytelling, we created the VA250 Tourism Marketing Program, encouraging local committees to develop creative ideas that highlight their communities. Eligible projects can receive up to $10,000 in funding, and response has been tremendous.
Signature 250 events
Beyond community projects, we’re also preparing a series of major signature events. The Virginia International Tattoo in Norfolk is a breathtaking spectacle of precision and pageantry, featuring more than 800 military musicians and performers. Sail 250 will celebrate our rich maritime history, with a tall ship festival sailing the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. Stops will include Norfolk, Hampton, Alexandria, Richmond, Cape Charles, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach and these destinations are hosting family-friendly festivals and opportunities for visitors to engage with

the crews and learn about maritime history. In Colonial Williamsburg, we’ll present “250 Years of Forming a More Perfect Union,” a grand celebration with fireworks, live performances, and the participation of guests from around the world. We’re also spotlighting our many presidential homes like Mount Vernon and Monticello to Montpelier, Highland, and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. With seven presidents hailing from Virginia, our presidential legacy runs deep. For the group travel community, these milestones offer exciting new ways to package and experience Virginia. Group travelers are drawn to places where history, lodging, dining, and recreation come together — and we do that exceptionally well. In 2024, group travel to Virginia generated more than $1.6 billion, supported 13,000 jobs, and paid $507 million in wages. We fully recovered from pre-pandemic levels by 2023, and forward bookings remain strong.
History is alive in Virginia
History is the anchor, but itineraries here are dynamic. Groups can visit the homes of presidents, explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, or follow the Crooked Road Music Trail, a 300-mile route through Southwest Virginia celebrating the birthplace of country music. In 2027, we’ll mark the 100th anniversary of the first country music recording in Bristol. This is a fitting reminder that history is alive in every corner of our state. Our hope is to inspire visitors and residents alike to gain a deeper appreciation for our shared story. In Virginia, there’s always an anniversary to celebrate, always a pivotal moment to rediscover. A Century Strong—
AND READY FOR WHAT COMES NEXT
As the American Bus Association approaches its 100th year, we do so from a position of strength. Founded in 1926 as a division of AAA, ABA has grown into the national voice of the private bus, tour, and group travel industry. This year, ABA was honored as the Motorcoach and Group Travel Association of the Year, reflecting the steady progress our members, partners and staff have built over decades. ABA enters its second century with a clear strategic plan and a strong foundation—literally. The ABA Foundation, now capitalized with more than $10 million, produces the industry’s leading research on economic impact, travel trends, workforce needs, and the value of group travel. These reports help operators strengthen their businesses and help destinations attract visitors. And we provide this research free of charge because ABA’s role is to lift the entire industry, not just a portion of it. The cumulative impact of this work, and the industry it supports, is substantial. According to new Foundation research, the private bus and group travel sector generates $158 billion in annual economic activity—larger than public transit and passenger rail combined. Private buses move 400 million passengers each year and generate 37 billion passenger miles, connecting people to work, school, military bases, medical appointments, and tourism destinations nationwide. The direct economic footprint of motorcoach travel demonstrates why the industry matters to communities of all sizes. Traveler spending generates: • $22.3 billion in food and beverage purchases • $18.5 billion in motorcoach transportation • $12.7 billion in retail purchases • $12.1 billion in recreation and attraction spending • $3.5 billion in lodging These dollars support operators, drivers, mechanics, suppliers, restaurants, hotels, retailers, and attractions. Every trip has a real economic impact. As we enter our centennial, we are proud of the industry’s growth and proud of ABA’s role in guiding it forward. But our work is far from finished. The next 100 years will bring new challenges and new opportunities across travel, mobility, and transportation. ABA intends to meet them with the same clarity and purpose that defined our first century. That is why we are setting ambitious membership goals—to grow bus, tour, and travel participation across the country. We invite operators, destinations, and suppliers to join us. Be part of ABA’s next chapter. Help shape the future of American travel, mobility, and economic opportunity. A century strong—and ready for the next. Join us Fred Ferguson is president and CEO of the American Bus Association.

A CENTURY ON THE MOVE As the ABA celebrates its Centennial, it’s not just reflecting on a century of advocacy, it’s accelerating into an era of greener technology and smarter travel By Jason Paha
F
ounded in 1926, the American Bus Association stands as the oldest, largest and most respected voice of the motorcoach and group travel industry. In 2026, ABA will proudly celebrate its Centennial, marking 100 years of connecting communities, shaping transportation policy and championing reliable and affordable travel for millions.

Humble Beginnings
Motorcoaches knit together the disconnected corners of the country, creating a transportation network that’s as inclusive as it is efficient. What began as a modest coalition of operators seeking fair regulation has evolved into a dynamic association representing every corner of North America’s motorcoach, group tour and travel ecosystem. “ABA has played a pivotal role in shaping the motorcoach and group travel
industry, not just through advocacy and education, but by fostering a strong sense of community among operators, suppliers and partners,” said Alex Berardi, president of Trailways.com. “Personally, the ABA has been instrumental in helping me build lasting relationships and stay ahead of industry trends.”
On March 19, 1926, the Bus Division of the American Automobile Association held its first formal meeting in Washington, D.C. The bus industry at that time faced mounting challenges: states sought to regulate interstate operators, railroads accused buses of stealing passengers, and Congress debated how to oversee this growing mode of travel. In response, AAA’s Bus Division united operators under one voice, later joined by other state and regional associations, to advocate for fair treatment and consistent federal oversight. Arthur Hill, a West Virginia bus company executive, was elected chairman, setting the tone for a century of leadership through collaboration. By the early 1930s, the group had adopted a new identity as the National Association of Motor Bus Operators (NAMBO), complete with its first Code of Principles built on safety, reliability and comfort. After years of persistent advocacy, NAMBO members helped shape the Motor Carrier Act of 1935, which placed regulation of interstate motor carriers under the Interstate Commerce Commission. This achievement secured the industry’s legitimacy and set national standards that protected both operators and passengers.
Reinvention and Expansion The 1960s and 1970s marked a period of reinvention. As leadership passed from Arthur Hill to Everett Hutchinson and then Charles Webb, NAMBO established a full-time government relations department, ensuring the industry’s voice was heard in the newly formed U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1977, NAMBO officially became the American Bus Association, a name reflecting the industry’s broad service to the traveling public. Navigating Change and Building Community The 1980s tested the industry with new regulatory changes, insurance crises and the consolidation of major carriers like Greyhound and Trailways. Under the leadership of Norman Sherlock and later George T. Snyder Jr., ABA helped shape the Bus Regulatory Act of 1982, simplifying decades of overregulation and paving the way for a more competitive marketplace. ABA also launched initiatives like the National Bus ROADEO, highlighting professional driver excellence and safety.
www.LeisureGroupTravel.com
<< DECEMBER 2025 19
The 1990s saw an evolution from advocacy alone to member empowerment and education. ABA expanded its partnerships with travel and tourism organizations, enhanced its annual Marketplace, and launched the Certified Travel Industry Specialist continuing education program. When Peter J. Pantuso became president and CEO in 1996, he championed the motorcoach as a vital player in an increasingly intermodal transportation landscape, ensuring it remained visible in national transportation policy discussions.
Bus travel remains the safest form of surface transportation in America.
Today, Motorcoaches are Driving America Forward In an era obsessed with efficiency and sustainability, the motorcoach is one of society’s unsung heroes. Each full coach takes up to 57 cars off the highway, cutting congestion, saving energy, and eliminating 44 million gallons of wasted fuel annually. With nearly 48,000 motorcoaches crossing North America, the industry delivers more than 455 million passenger miles per year, more than some airlines, while generating $158 billion in economic impact.

DECEMBER 2025

From school groups and sports teams to corporate travelers and rural residents, the motorcoach is the quiet backbone of American mobility.
A Green and Accessible Solution Beyond the numbers lies an even more impressive truth: motorcoaches are the most environmentally friendly form of passenger travel in the country. Averaging 206 passenger miles per gallon, they outperform planes, trains, cars, and even hybrids in carbon efficiency. And unlike air or rail, coaches go where no other form of public transportation can. For more than 14 million rural Americans, they’re the only reliable means of reaching jobs, healthcare, and family beyond city limits. Motorcoaches knit together the disconnected corners of the country, creating a transportation network that’s as inclusive as it is efficient.
Barter_2025_Groups_LeisureGroup_Vertical.pdf
The Gold Standard of Safety and Professionalism Behind the wheel, safety is the industry’s guiding principle. The ABA has built a culture of accountability grounded in ethics, compliance and best practices. Every ABA operator must pass a rigorous vetting process before joining, and the association continues to push for stronger enforcement against illegal operators. Through initiatives like the Bus Industry Safety Council and the Certified Travel Industry Specialist program, ABA ensures that excellence isn’t just a goal, it’s a requirement. The result: bus travel remains the safest form of surface transportation in America.
Future of motorcoach travel As the ABA prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the motorcoach industry stands poised for a new era of growth and innovation. After years of steady recovery and rising demand for group travel, motorcoach tourism is benefiting from a renewed interest in community-based, sustainable travel experiences. More travelers are choosing organized group tours and charter trips that minimize environmental impact while maximizing social connection, two values increasingly prioritized by modern travelers. With new technologies improving route planning, fuel efficiency and onboard amenities, the motorcoach experience has never been more appealing or accessible.
The next chapter for motorcoach travel is also being defined by diversification and modernization. Operators across the country are investing in cleaner-burning engines, alternative fuels, and electric motorcoaches, positioning the industry as a leader in sustainable transportation. Enhanced safety systems, real-time tracking and digital booking platforms are improving both operational efficiency and customer confidence. At the same time, growing partnerships between motorcoach operators, destinations, and tour planners are expanding the reach of group travel, bringing economic benefits to more rural and mid-sized communities. Looking ahead, the outlook is bright. As infrastructure investments continue and traveler preferences evolve, motorcoaches will play an increasingly vital role in America’s tourism ecosystem — connecting urban centers to small towns, heritage sites, parks and attractions nationwide. With its century-long legacy as the “face-to-face industry,” the ABA enters its second century with momentum and purpose, driving forward a mode of travel that remains affordable, energy-efficient and deeply human at its core. “Looking ahead, I believe the ABA will continue to be a driving force in innovation and sustainability, helping our industry adapt to evolving traveler expectations while maintaining the high standards of safety and service we’re known for,” Berardi said.

“I commend ABA members for your commitment to public safety and for the positive difference you make in our local communities. Whether visiting family, touring national historic sites, or heading off to work each day, millions of Americans rely on dependable bus service … motorcoaches now serve six times more U.S. destinations than airlines and more than seven times more destinations than passenger rail.” President George W. Motorcoach group travel is a powerful economic engine. Beyond simply getting travelers from one place to another, motorcoach group travel connects communities, supports local economies and makes travel accessible for millions of Americans each year.
From student trips and senior excursions to sports teams, tour groups and family reunions, motorcoaches move people efficiently and sustainably while channeling vital spending into hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops in every corner of the country. This form of travel strengthens regional tourism networks,
creates jobs and generates tax revenue that benefits communities large and small, all while delivering one of the most energy-efficient modes of group transportation available. in the United States recorded an estimated 37.6 billion passenger miles in the country in 2024, supporting significant economic impacts nationally. Direct spending by motorcoach travelers amounted to $69.8 billion in 2024, including spending on motorcoach transportation as well as a range of goods and services, such as accommodations and food and beverages. Of that $69.8 billion, $54.6 billion stemmed from day traveler spending while $15.2 billion came from overnight traveler spending. That spending didn’t stop there as it rippled through local communities, creating a total economic impact of $158 billion, supporting more than 890,000 full-time and part-time jobs and generating $27.7 billion in tax revenue nationwide.

Motorcoaches serve nearly 5,000 communities nationwide, quietly providing for the mobility needs of millions of consumers. Motorcoaches carry a far higher percentage of passengers from low-income families than any other mode. Nearly 40 percent of intercity bus passengers are from families with incomes that are less than $20,000 per year. In contrast, fewer than 10 percent of Amtrak and commercial aviation passengers are from low-income families. Providing these services while, at the same time, strengthening the economy of a state, province, county or city’s economy is a goal shared by many communities. The nearly 48,000 motorcoaches on roads across North America account for more than 774 million passengers each year, more than the airlines and Amtrak combined and intercity buses serve nearly 5,000 communities nationwide. Those 35,000 coaches provide charter, tour, sightseeing, airport shuttle, commuter, and scheduled services. tourist spending in that local economy. An overnight visit by a motorcoach group leaves behind $5,000 and $11,000 in direct tourist spending in a local economy. In an average year, more than 360 million passenger trips in the United States are taken by motorcoaches, totaling 22.7 billion passenger miles.
A Green Way to Travel Motorcoaches are the most fuel-efficient way to travel, averaging 5.5 miles per gallon of fuel while carrying between 3050 passengers, yielding a performance record of 206.6 passenger miles per gallon. Compared with motorcoaches, trains consume three times more energy, cars consume four times more energy, and airplanes consume more than five times more energy per passenger mile. One motorcoach can displace as many as 57 passenger cars from crowded highways. Intercity buses help to relieve congestion and pollution by keeping up to 425 million cars off the roads annually. Motorcoaches emit the least carbon dioxide per passenger mile when compared to other forms of transportation.
Safety The motorcoach industry is the safest form of commercial passenger transportation. Data from the National Safety Council and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration Office of Motor Carriers and Highway Safety show that the intercity motorcoach industry is one of the safest modes of transportation and has been consistently for decades. Automobile fatalities per year in the United States tend to hover between 30,000 and 40,000. Fatalities on motorcoach accidents typically average around 44, which makes motorcoaches responsible for between only 0.11 percent and 0.14 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities. Motorcoach passenger safety is ABA’s top priority, and the government’s own data show that bus travel is the safest form of surface transportation. ABA supports science-driven safety research to improve occupant protection. Enforcement of existing laws and regulations by federal and state agencies must be a priority to ensure that illegal operators do not endanger public safety.
intercity bus transportation in their rural communities. However, a number of states have chosen to divert those funds to other areas. Motorcoaches can only fill that gap with this necessary assistance.
Public Service Assistance The motorcoach industry also plays a vital role in supporting national emergency response and public service needs.
Its vehicles and operators are regularly mobilized for natural disaster evacuations, the movement of emergency aid and personnel and the transportation of U.S. military service members. These missions demonstrate the sector’s logistical capacity, reliability, and readiness in times of crisis. With nearly 400 million passenger trips taken annually, the motorcoach industry is a critical pillar of America’s transportation system—providing safe, affordable, and environmentally efficient mobility options. From small family-owned operators to national carriers, motorcoaches serve communities in every state, connecting people to work, school, healthcare, tourism, and more. Whether moving students, commuters, military personnel, or travelers, our industry ensures access where other modes often do not reach. Motorcoaches also complement the broader transportation network, linking seamlessly with airports, rail stations, transit hubs, and roadways, helping bind the nation together.
Rural Connections Rural America is underserved by public transportation. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly 40 percent of rural residents have no public transportation in their communities. For many rural citizens, intercity bus service is the only form of public transportation available to connect them to other communities and basic human services. This service not only provides essential passenger services, its incidental package express service is the only form of daily, scheduled freight service for many of these small towns. Motorcoach transportation is becoming even more important, as a decreasing handful receive service from the federal Essential Air Service program intended to connect rural U.S. communities to major hub airports, and as airlines cut service to rural communities in cost-saving measures. States were provided an important resource in TEA-21 under Section 5311F, the rural intercity bus program to carry out a program, to develop and support

CHARITY CHAPEL AND BELL TOWER Designed by award-winning architect Albert Skiles, Charity Chapel and Bell Tower were inspired by 18th Century Franciscan Missions of San Antonio while retaining its own distinctive sense of place here in the Ozarks. Upon entering, one is greeted with a series of spaces with an ascending order of proportion. The intimate, compressed space of the vestibule offers a comforting respite from the outside world and provides a glimpse of the expansive volume of the nave. The tall, narrow nave is characterized by a timeless quality of diffuse natural light. A glow from the high clerestory (celestial) windows saturate the space with a spiritual ambiance that changes with every hour, day and season. The icons of Charity Chapel represent the integrated charism of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity. The presence of the saints in the church were given by traditional Byzantine iconography many centuries ago. This tradition has survived until this day. They often say, “the icon’s been written” just as a text. Therefore, icons are to be read. The icons were hand “written” by Ukrainian artist Oleh Skoropadsky and are one of the high points of visitors.

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK
Just an hour away, your group can experience the natural environments of South Dakota at Wind Cave National Park. Protecting both the underground earth and above ground earth, Wind Cave is one of America’s oldest national parks and a great location to visit if you want to get closer to nature. Travelers can take tours to explore South Dakota’s great caves or view the symbolic bison on a soothing walk. The cultural significance of this nation park comes from Lakota tradition where the first humans and bison came from the cave. It’s a tradition that is deeply rooted in South Dakota and one that Wind Cave shares with tourists who want to experience it. When nightfall arrives, it’s better to stay out than in. Wind Cave is in the
process of becoming an International Dark Sky Park for the sake of allowing visitors to enjoy the natural light they have to offer. The Glacial lakes region is located in the northeast corner of South Dakota and is characterized by many lakes formed by glacial activity. It’s a great hub for not only nature exploration but outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and birdwatching. Some notable lakes in the area would be Big Stone Lake, a popular spot for camping and picnicking with native forests and various hiking trails and Roy Lake, best for fishing and beachy afternoons. For historical experiences, there’s a rich native american history culture with multiple opportunities to learn about the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribe before colonization. The Prairies Region consists of a vast and diverse landscape encompassing four national grasslands. It’s a mix of beauty and history and is known for its picturesque rolling hills and serene lakes. This is where you can explore the historical Native American sites while participating in outdoor activities. These locations aren’t as popular to tourists but have been coming up as a gem to South Dakota. sdglaciallakes.com
