As the American Bus Association approaches its 100th year, we do so from a position of strength. Founded in 1926 as a division of AAA, ABA has grown into the national voice of the private bus, tour, and group travel industry. This year, ABA was honored as the Motorcoach and Group Travel Association of the Year, reflecting the steady progress our members, partners and staff have built over decades.

ABA enters its second century with a clear strategic plan and a strong foundation—literally. The ABA Foundation, now capitalized with more than $10 million, produces the industry’s leading research on economic impact, travel trends, workforce needs, and the value of group travel. These reports help operators strengthen their businesses and help destinations attract visitors. And we provide this research free of charge because ABA’s role is to lift the entire industry, not just a portion of it.

The cumulative impact of this work, and the industry it supports, is substantial. According to new Foundation research, the private bus and group travel sector generates $158 billion in annual economic activity—larger than public transit and passenger rail combined. Private buses move 400 million passengers each year and generate 37 billion passenger miles, connecting people to work, school, military bases, medical appointments, and tourism destinations nationwide.

The direct economic footprint of motorcoach travel demonstrates why the industry matters to communities of all sizes. Traveler spending generates: • $22.3 billion in food and beverage purchases • $18.5 billion in motorcoach transportation • $12.7 billion in retail purchases • $12.1 billion in recreation and attraction spending • $3.5 billion in lodging These dollars support operators, drivers, mechanics, suppliers, restaurants, hotels, retailers, and attractions. Every trip has a real economic impact.

As we enter our centennial, we are proud of the industry’s growth and proud of ABA’s role in guiding it forward. But our work is far from finished.

The American Bus Association Turns 100

A CENTURY ON THE MOVE As the ABA celebrates its Centennial, it’s not just reflecting on a century of advocacy, it’s accelerating into an era of greener technology and smarter travel

ounded in 1926, the American Bus Association stands as the oldest, largest and most respected voice of the motorcoach and group travel industry. In 2026, ABA will proudly celebrate its Centennial, marking 100 years of connecting communities, shaping transportation policy and championing reliable and affordable travel for millions.

Humble Beginnings

Motorcoaches knit together the disconnected corners of the country, creating a transportation network that’s as inclusive as it is efficient.

What began as a modest coalition of operators seeking fair regulation has evolved into a dynamic association representing every corner of North America’s motorcoach, group tour and travel ecosystem.

“ABA has played a pivotal role in shaping the motorcoach and group travel

industry, not just through advocacy and education, but by fostering a strong sense of community among operators, suppliers and partners,” said Alex Berardi, president of Trailways.com. “Personally, the ABA has been instrumental in helping me build lasting relationships and stay ahead of industry trends.”

On March 19, 1926, the Bus Division of the American Automobile Association held its first formal meeting in Washington, D.C. The bus industry at that time faced mounting challenges: states sought to regulate interstate operators, railroads accused buses of stealing passengers, and Congress debated how to oversee this growing mode of travel.

In response, AAA’s Bus Division united operators under one voice, later joined by other state and regional associations, to advocate for fair treatment and consistent federal oversight. Arthur Hill, a West Virginia bus company executive, was elected chairman, setting the tone for a century of leadership through collaboration.

By the early 1930s, the group had adopted a new identity as the National Association of Motor Bus Operators (NAMBO), complete with its first Code of Principles built on safety, reliability and comfort. After years of persistent advocacy, NAMBO members helped shape the Motor Carrier Act of 1935, which placed regulation of interstate motor carriers under the Interstate Commerce Commission.

This achievement secured the industry’s legitimacy and set national standards that protected both operators and passengers.

Reinvention and Expansion The 1960s and 1970s marked a period of reinvention. As leadership passed from Arthur Hill to Everett Hutchinson and then Charles Webb, NAMBO established a full-time government relations department, ensuring the industry’s voice was heard in the newly formed U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1977, NAMBO officially became the American Bus Association, a name reflecting the industry’s broad service to the traveling public.

Navigating Change and Building Community The 1980s tested the industry with new regulatory changes, insurance crises and the consolidation of major carriers like Greyhound and Trailways. Under the leadership of Norman Sherlock and later George T. Snyder Jr., ABA helped shape the Bus Regulatory Act of 1982, simplifying decades of overregulation and paving the way for a more competitive marketplace. ABA also launched initiatives like the National Bus ROADEO, highlighting professional driver excellence and safety.

The 1990s saw an evolution from advocacy alone to member empowerment and education. ABA expanded its partnerships with travel and tourism organizations, enhanced its annual Marketplace, and launched the Certified Travel Industry Specialist continuing education program. When Peter J. Pantuso became president and CEO in 1996, he championed the motorcoach as a vital player in an increasingly intermodal transportation landscape, ensuring it remained visible in national transportation policy discussions.

Today, Motorcoaches are Driving America Forward In an era obsessed with efficiency and sustainability, the motorcoach is one of society’s unsung heroes. Each full coach takes up to 57 cars off the highway, cutting congestion, saving energy, and eliminating 44 million gallons of wasted fuel annually. With nearly 48,000 motorcoaches crossing North America, the industry delivers more than 455 million passenger miles per year, more than some airlines, while generating $158 billion in economic impact.

A Green and Accessible Solution Beyond the numbers lies an even more impressive truth: motorcoaches are the most environmentally friendly form of passenger travel in the country.

Averaging 206 passenger miles per gallon, they outperform planes, trains, cars, and even hybrids in carbon efficiency. And unlike air or rail, coaches go where no other form of public transportation can.

For more than 14 million rural Americans, they’re the only reliable means of reaching jobs, healthcare, and family beyond city limits. Motorcoaches knit together the disconnected corners of the country, creating a transportation network that’s as inclusive as it is efficient.

The Gold Standard of Safety and Professionalism Behind the wheel, safety is the industry’s guiding principle. The ABA has built a culture of accountability grounded in ethics, compliance and best practices. Every ABA operator must pass a rigorous vetting process before joining, and the association continues to push for stronger enforcement against illegal operators. Through initiatives like the Bus Industry Safety Council and the Certified Travel Industry Specialist program, ABA ensures that excellence isn’t just a goal, it’s a requirement.

The result: bus travel remains the safest form of surface transportation in America.

Future of motorcoach travel As the ABA prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the motorcoach industry stands poised for a new era of growth and innovation. After years of steady recovery and rising demand for group travel, motorcoach tourism is benefiting from a renewed interest in community-based, sustainable travel experiences. More travelers are choosing organized group tours and charter trips that minimize environmental impact while maximizing social connection, two values increasingly prioritized by modern travelers. With new technologies improving route planning, fuel efficiency and onboard amenities, the motorcoach experience has never been more appealing or accessible.

The next chapter for motorcoach travel is also being defined by diversification and modernization. Operators across the country are investing in cleaner-burning engines, alternative fuels, and electric motorcoaches, positioning the industry as a leader in sustainable transportation. Enhanced safety systems, real-time tracking and digital booking platforms are improving both operational efficiency and customer confidence. At the same time, growing partnerships between motorcoach operators, destinations, and tour planners are expanding the reach of group travel, bringing economic benefits to more rural and mid-sized communities.

Looking ahead, the outlook is bright. As infrastructure investments continue and traveler preferences evolve, motorcoaches will play an increasingly vital role in America’s tourism ecosystem — connecting urban centers to small towns, heritage sites, parks and attractions nationwide.

With its century-long legacy as the “face-to-face industry,” the ABA enters its second century with momentum and purpose, driving forward a mode of travel that remains affordable, energy-efficient and deeply human at its core.

Motorcoach group travel is a powerful economic engine.

Beyond simply getting travelers from one place to another, motorcoach group travel connects communities, supports local economies and makes travel accessible for millions of Americans each year.

From student trips and senior excursions to sports teams, tour groups and family reunions, motorcoaches move people efficiently and sustainably while channeling vital spending into hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops in every corner of the country. This form of travel strengthens regional tourism networks,

creates jobs and generates tax revenue that benefits communities large and small, all while delivering one of the most energy-efficient modes of group transportation available.

in the United States recorded an estimated 37.6 billion passenger miles in the country in 2024, supporting significant economic impacts nationally.

Direct spending by motorcoach travelers amounted to $69.8 billion in 2024, including spending on motorcoach transportation as well as a range of goods and services, such as accommodations and food and beverages.

Of that $69.8 billion, $54.6 billion stemmed from day traveler spending while $15.2 billion came from overnight traveler spending.

That spending didn’t stop there as it rippled through local communities, creating a total economic impact of $158 billion, supporting more than 890,000 full-time and part-time jobs and generating $27.7 billion in tax revenue nationwide.

Motorcoaches serve nearly 5,000 communities nationwide, quietly providing for the mobility needs of millions of consumers. Motorcoaches carry a far higher percentage of passengers from low-income families than any other mode. Nearly 40 percent of intercity bus passengers are from families with incomes that are less than $20,000 per year. In contrast, fewer than 10 percent of Amtrak and commercial aviation passengers are from low-income families. Providing these services while, at the same time, strengthening the economy of a state, province, county or city’s economy is a goal shared by many communities.

The nearly 48,000 motorcoaches on roads across North America account for more than 774 million passengers each year, more than the airlines and Amtrak combined and intercity buses serve nearly 5,000 communities nationwide. Those 35,000 coaches provide charter, tour, sightseeing, airport shuttle, commuter, and scheduled services.

In an average year, more than 360 million passenger trips in the United States are taken by motorcoaches, totaling 22.7 billion passenger miles.

A Green Way to Travel Motorcoaches are the most fuel-efficient way to travel, averaging 5.5 miles per gallon of fuel while carrying between 3050 passengers, yielding a performance record of 206.6 passenger miles per gallon. Compared with motorcoaches, trains consume three times more energy, cars consume four times more energy, and airplanes consume more than five times more energy per passenger mile.

One motorcoach can displace as many as 57 passenger cars from crowded highways. Intercity buses help to relieve congestion and pollution by keeping up to 425 million cars off the roads annually. Motorcoaches emit the least carbon dioxide per passenger mile when compared to other forms of transportation.

Safety The motorcoach industry is the safest form of commercial passenger transportation.

Data from the National Safety Council and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration Office of Motor Carriers and Highway Safety show that the intercity motorcoach industry is one of the safest modes of transportation and has been consistently for decades.

Automobile fatalities per year in the United States tend to hover between 30,000 and 40,000. Fatalities on motorcoach accidents typically average around 44, which makes motorcoaches responsible for between only 0.11 percent and 0.14 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities.

Motorcoach passenger safety is ABA’s top priority, and the government’s own data show that bus travel is the safest form of surface transportation. ABA supports science-driven safety research to improve occupant protection. Enforcement of existing laws and regulations by federal and state agencies must be a priority to ensure that illegal operators do not endanger public safety.

Public Service Assistance The motorcoach industry also plays a vital role in supporting national emergency response and public service needs.

Its vehicles and operators are regularly mobilized for natural disaster evacuations, the movement of emergency aid and personnel and the transportation of U.S. military service members. These missions demonstrate the sector’s logistical capacity, reliability, and readiness in times of crisis.

With nearly 400 million passenger trips taken annually, the motorcoach industry is a critical pillar of America’s transportation system—providing safe, affordable, and environmentally efficient mobility options.

From small family-owned operators to national carriers, motorcoaches serve communities in every state, connecting people to work, school, healthcare, tourism, and more. Whether moving students, commuters, military personnel, or travelers, our industry ensures access where other modes often do not reach. Motorcoaches also complement the broader transportation network, linking seamlessly with airports, rail stations, transit hubs, and roadways, helping bind the nation together.

Rural Connections Rural America is underserved by public transportation. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly 40 percent of rural residents have no public transportation in their communities.

For many rural citizens, intercity bus service is the only form of public transportation available to connect them to other communities and basic human services.

This service not only provides essential passenger services, its incidental package express service is the only form of daily, scheduled freight service for many of these small towns.

Motorcoach transportation is becoming even more important, as a decreasing handful receive service from the federal Essential Air Service program intended to connect rural U.S. communities to major hub airports, and as airlines cut service to rural communities in cost-saving measures.

States were provided an important resource in TEA-21 under Section 5311F, the rural intercity bus program to carry out a program, to develop and support

Arrive in Tulsa and take a Route 66 driving tour with a few stops, including: Cyrus Avery Plaza, being the beginning of Route 66, Route 66 Rising, featuring a 30-foot-high and 70-feet-long statue that reflects the hope that the Mother Road offered during the Great Depression, Golden Driller, a 76-foot-tall statue symbolizing the state’s oil industry heritage, Buck Atoms Cosmic Curios, a unique shop that offers a wide range of Route 66-themed souvenirs and merchandise, Decopolis, a destination that combines history, fantasy and local charm, and Cain’s Ballroom, a historic music venue that has played an important role in the evolution of American music.

The Coleman Theater is a historic performance venue and movie house that hosts various entertainment acts such as vaudeville, musical groups and is best known for its “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ. Next, make a stop at

DAY 3 After breakfast, start your day with a visit to Outside House in Tulsa. Then, pay a visit to Woody Guthrie Center also in Tulsa. You can follow that with a stop at the Bob Dylan Center.

After lunch, stop at The Church Studio. Later this afternoon, pay a visit to Greenwood Rising in Tulsa. Then, you can stop at Philbrook before heading to the Center of the Universe. For dinner, stop at Mother Road Market for an array of diverse and local foods that also support local entrepreneurs. Later, return to the hotel with the neon sign by — dark, depending on the time of year, overnight in the Tulsa metro area.

DAY 4 Start your day at Praying Hands at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. Then, visit Downtown Sapulpa, where you can enjoy annual communitybased events such as the Route 66 Farmer’s Market and Route 66 Blowout Car Show.

Gasoline Alley has quickly become a must see stop for Route 66 travelers in the Sapulpa area.

Roadtrippers enjoy checking out the signs, Route 66 memorabilia and vintage Ford autos inside, and take advantage of the many photo ops at The Official Home of Lady Luck.

For lunch, visit Burgers N More in Sapulpa.

After lunch, visit the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum. Then, you can stop at Rock Cafe for an afternoon treat in Stroud. This afternoon, stop at Route 66 Interpretive Center in Chandler before heading to Round Barn in Arcadia.

Another fun Arcadia stop is the Chicken Shack, where you can find legendary fried chicken and a comforting atmosphere. Tonight, visit POPS in Arcadia, where you can find attractions that combine soda shops, diners and gas stations with multiple food items available. Next, depart from Edmond and the Blue Hippo, an iconic symbol in the city that started The Blue Hippo Festival, which celebrates Edmond’s Route 66 history. Overnight in the Oklahoma City metro area.

DAY 5 Start your day with a trip to Vladislava’s Czech Bakery and Cafe for Kolaches, and make a stop at Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford, where you can see the museum’s showcase of artifacts regarding aviation and space exploration. For lunch, visit Lucille’s in Weatherford, featuring their popular monthly specials, hearty breakfast and popular beers and alcohol selections. Then, stop at the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City. A museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of Route 66 and highlights the road’s evolution from the 1920s to its peak in the 1950s. This afternoon, visit the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, located in the heart of the state. The museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich history of the highway, interactive exhibits and educational displays.

Stop in El Reno for excellent onion burgers

and fun photo ops. El Reno is home to three fabulous burger places: Sid’s, Robert’s Grill and Johnnie’s Grill.

DAY 6 Depart your hotel and head to the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. A symbol of tragic loss and a tribute to the strength of the human spirit to honor the victims, survivors and rescuers involved in the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. You can then make a visit to the First Americans Museum, a comprehensive center that celebrates the rich cultures and resilience of Oklahoma’s First American Nations. Enjoy lunch at Thirty-Nine at FAM and enjoy modernized Indigenous cuisine, which includes but is not limited to white bean hummus, manoomin cakes and hominy stew. Make a stop at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and culture of the American West with unique pieces of art, artifacts and photographs.

Visit the Oklahoma City Capitol and enjoy Greco-Roman architecture, multiple murals and restored stained glass artwork and active oil wells. Take an OKC Water Taxi for a narrative tour that guides around the city with easy accessibility and is budget-friendly.

Stop at the American Banjo Museum – tour, dinner and entertainment that features over 300 banjos from the Jazz Age, special events and concerts and interactive displays. Upon entering, one is greeted with a series of spaces with an ascending order of proportion. The intimate, compressed space of the vestibule offers a comforting respite from the outside world and provides a glimpse of the expansive volume of the nave. The tall, narrow nave is characterized by a timeless quality of diffuse natural light. A glow from the high clerestory (celestial) windows saturate the space with a spiritual ambiance that changes with every hour, day and season.

The icons of Charity Chapel represent the integrated charism of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity. The presence of the saints in the church were given by traditional Byzantine iconography many centuries ago. This tradition has survived until this day. They often say, “the icon’s been written” just as a text. Therefore, icons are to be read. The icons were hand “written” by Ukrainian artist Oleh Skoropadsky and are one of the high points of visitors.

Journey Through Georgia DAY 1

Welcome to your first full day of your spring trip to the Cherry Blossom Festival. Have breakfast at your hotel or stop by Z Beans Coffee, where fresh-roasted Ecuadorian coffee pairs perfectly with their breakfast sandwiches, burritos, pastries, and quick grab-and-go options to start your day.

After breakfast, stop by the Downtown Macon Visitor’s Center to learn about the city’s history through colorful exhibits, timelines, and an introductory film. hen thinking of Myrtle Beach, you probably imagine bustling boardwalks, white sandy beaches, golf, and a rich, exciting nightlife. While these are all true, The Grand Strand offers so muchmore with breath taking nature, beautiful wildlife, and a vibrant art scene.

BROOKGREEN GARDENS Opening in 1932, Brookgreen Gardens has stood the test of time and continues to entertain tourists and locals alike, bringing in over a quarter of a million visitors a year. This extravagant nature experience was voted one of the Top 10 gardens to visit in the U.S. by TripAdvisor. While exploring you can choose from a wide variety of activities and locations. The garden hosts daily tours with the option to walk, ride in a Trekker, or cruise on a boat. Guests can marvel at the over 2,000 sculptures created by 430 artists whilewalking the grounds and botanical gardens.

MURRELLS INLET ECO-TOUR It’s impossible to fully explore Myrtle Beach without taking to the water, and the Murrells Inlet Eco-Tour provides the best cruise tour experience. After boarding the Explorer, guests will be taken on an adventure through Murrells Inlet. MYRTLE BEACH ARTS & GALLERY TRAIL The Grand Strand stretches over 60 miles on South Carolina’s coastline, with hundreds of art galleries, sculptures, and museums to visit along the way. However, this isn’t as overwhelming as it may seem at first. The city offers a free Trail Pass to help guide you along, making sure you reach every major attraction and exhibit. They also offer prizes and rewards for following the GPS and visiting locations. Tours offer one of four trails to explore at a time, that span across 14 different communities.
