WELCOME TO OKLAHOMA!
Few places blend natural beauty and athletic excitement quite like Oklahoma. Here, breathtaking scenery meets world-class sports, creating a destination that inspires exploration, competition, and unforgettable memories.
Oklahoma’s landscapes are as diverse as they come — one of only four states with more than 10 ecoregions and the most per mile anywhere in the country. From the rugged peaks of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge to the serene waters of Chickasaw National Recreation Area, the towering cliffs of Quartz Mountain to the cascades at Natural Falls State Park, every corner of Oklahoma tells a different story of natural wonder.
But nature is only half the show. Our cities pulse with athletic energy. The Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys carry proud legacies of championship-caliber competition, while the Oklahoma City Thunder continues to shine on the national stage. Along the Oklahoma River, Riversport Rapids draws elite athletes from more than 60 nations — proving that Oklahoma’s reach in the world of sports is truly global.
For tournament planners and event organizers, Oklahoma’s investment in top-tier facilities makes it a prime destination for future competitions.
Whether you’re drawn by wide-open skies, roaring crowds, or the spirit of competition, Oklahoma delivers it all. We invite you to come experience a state that celebrates both its natural beauty and its athletic prowess — a place where every adventure, and every victory, feels a little bigger under Oklahoma’s endless horizon.
We look forward to welcoming you to our great state!

OKLAHOMA’S SPORTS BOOM HITS THE GLOBAL STAGE
The Sooner State is proving it’s built to host the biggest moments in sports
By Jason Paha
Oklahoma sports are having a moment, which may be an understatement.
From the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder winning its first championship this season to the Oklahoma Sooners NCAA softball team dominating play with four consecutive titles in recent years, the Sooner State has been capturing headlines.
And the best appears yet to come.
OKLAHOMA STEPS ONTO THE OLYMPIC STAGE
Earlier this year, Oklahoma City made headlines with its announcement it will partner with LA28 to serve as a staging site for Canoe Slalom, Kayak Cross and Softball for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
The city proved it can handle big events when it recently staged the 2024 Olympic Team Trials for Canoe/Kayak Slalom at RIVERSPORT OKC. RIVERSPORT is a $45.2 million whitewater center that opened in May 2016 in the
city’s downtown Boathouse District and will stage Olympic events in 2028. RIVERSPORT’s whitewater center includes a racecourse which has staged U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Canoe Slalom (2016 and 2024) and Kayak Cross (2024) as well as numerous national competitions.
Olympic softball figures to take place in 13,000-seat Devon Park in Oklahoma City, which hosts the annual NCAA Women’s College World Series. OKC has hosted the NCAA Women’s College World Series since 1990 (except for one year in 1996), and the event draws more than 110,000 fans annually. This past year, OKC hosted both the NBA Finals and the NCAA Women’s College World Series at the same time.
This is no small feat.
These events, coupled with the upcoming Olympics puts Oklahoma on a global stage, solidifying its reputation as a destination capable of handling the logistics, energy and excitement of the world’s biggest sporting event.

FACILITY INVESTMENT
That Olympic partnership is just the beginning. Oklahoma City and the state have doubled down on sports infrastructure, pouring resources into new, high-caliber venues designed to attract both national and international events.
The new OG&E Coliseum has already elevated the city’s profile and is the crown jewel of OKC Fair Park. This multipurpose facility is built to accommodate everything from basketball tournaments to volleyball, cheer and gymnastics competitions. Its modern design and flexibility make it a prime candidate for planners looking for a fresh venue in the heart of the country.
Another big project on the horizon is Oklahoma City’s $900 million downtown arena, which is expected to open in summer of 2028. More than just a home for the NBA’s Thunder, this arena will become one of the most significant sports and entertainment venues in the nation, drawing marquee events and serving as a hub for both locals and visitors.
OKC is also set to break ground later this year on a $71 million downtown multipurpose (primarily soccer) stadium with completion scheduled for March 2027. T he stadium will be the centerpiece of a 60-acre development referred to as the OKC Entertainment District. When it opens, the stadium will accommodate more than 12,000 fans and connect with several major venues, including the city’s new convention center, which opened in 2021.
ACTION ACROSS THE STATE
In Norman, it’s all things Sooners as perennial title contenders, the University of Oklahoma football team, is back in action with upgraded fan experiences, from pregame festivities to merchandise and concessions enhancements. Plus, the Lloyd Noble Center is home to the NCAA women’s gymnastics champions as Oklahoma defeated UCLA to capture the title. It was Oklahoma’s third women’s gymnastics championship in four years. The Sooners also won titles in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019, proving themselves to be a dynasty.
The men’s gymnasts haven’t been shabby either in recent years, winning four straight NCAA titles from 2015-2018.
In Enid, the David Allen Memorial Ballpark continues to shine, hosting the NJCAA Division II World Series every May, along with college tournaments and high-level youth baseball throughout the summer.
Down in Stillwater, it’s always a full season—Oklahoma State football in the fall, basketball in winter and spring brings baseball and softball action. And with 34 NCAA championships (a record), the Oklahoma State wrestling team is always a threat to take home the title.
Meanwhile in Edmond, athletic energy pulses every weekend. The Edmond Open, an ITF women’s pro tennis event, is turning heads on the hard courts, while facilities across the city are hosting swim meets, soccer tournaments and everything in between.
The Oklahoma softball team is a perennial powerhouse.
CRUISIN’ DOWN MEMORY LANE IN OKLAHOMA
OKLAHOMA IS READY TO CELEBRATE THE ROUTE 66 CENTENNIAL
By Randy Mink
Floating in his own pond next to a picnic area, the Blue Whale of Catoosa, Oklahoma epitomizes the kitschy roadside curiosities that motorists encountered during the heyday of Route 66, the most fabled highway in America. The smiling cement behemoth, measuring 80 feet long, is one of many iconic landmarks on the legendary ribbon of pavement that traversed eight U.S. states from Chicago to California.
Like other places along the road in Oklahoma and elsewhere, the whale and surrounding park are undergoing upgrades in preparation for Route 66 centennial celebrations in 2026.
Though the east-west corridor, affectionately known as the Mother Road, was replaced by superhighways decades ago, vast stretches of the old two-lane artery are still open to traffic, allowing travelers to leave the fast lane and see the real America, a land sprinkled with retro neon signs, quirky roadside attractions, souvenir shops, cozy motels and mom-and-pop diners. Oklahoma has 432 drivable miles of the historic highway, more than any other state.
Mother Road enthusiasts find numerous treasures in Tulsa. Selfie spots in the Meadow Gold District, named for the huge neon dairy company sign that lights up the night sky, include the newly installed space cowboy and cowgirl statues at Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios souvenir store, one of several fun shops and galleries on 11th Street. Such 20-foot-tall fiberglass figures, referred to as “Muffler Men” by pop culture historians, were considered the height of outdoor advertising in the 1960s. Sapulpa, just outside of Tulsa, offers an inviting downtown shopping core that will be even more attractive when its streetscape redesign is completed. The town’s Teepee Drive-In, an outdoor movie theater dating from the 1950s, was recently restored. Other Sapulpa crowd-pleasers include Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum, where you can ogle classic cars and pose by the world’s tallest gas pump (66 feet).
In Stroud, the Rock Cafe has been a Route 66 favorite since 1939. Owner Dawn Welch was the inspiration behind the character Sally Carrera in Disney/Pixar’s 2006 animated film Cars, and movie memorabilia lines the walls.
Arcadia boasts two irresistible photo stops. The Round Barn, a handsome red landmark brought back from the brink of collapse by dedicated volunteers, dates from 1898. Pops 66, an ultra-modern glass building with a diner/soda fountain, sports a futuristic, 66-foot-tall, LED-lit soda pop bottle and sells more than 700 varieties of pop.
The Oklahoma State Capitol offers an incredible, one-of-a-kind educational experience for groups. Art, history, and government are together in one space, offering an extraordinary destination unlike any other in Oklahoma. At the center of the experience, managed by the Oklahoma Arts Council, collections of artworks located throughout six floors of rotundas, corridors, and galleries, make the Oklahoma State Capitol the largest public art museum in the state.
The Capitol tours are led by trained volunteer docents. For small groups (10 or fewer) walk-up tours are available Monday through Friday. Reservations are not required. Guided tours may be requested for groups of 11 or more people.
The Filling Station, a restored gas station on Route 66 in El Reno just opened as a visitor center. It features a rotating display of classic cars and a catchy mural. There will be bus parking across the street.
In Clinton, the first-rate Oklahoma Route 66 Museum covers all eight states threaded by the highway. With a soundtrack of classic tunes from each era, exhibits document the road’s history decade by decade.
Though the highway of dreams was officially decommissioned in 1985, its spirit lives on. Route 66 is a true slice of Americana.
