INDIANA: WHERE BIG-TIME SPORTS MEET HOMETOWN TRADITIONS

FROM GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT EVENTS TO HOMETOWN

TOURNAMENTS, INDIANA PROVES IT’S A TRUE SPORTS STATE

Indiana has proven time and again that it shines on the biggest stages of sports. From national championships and All-Star weekends to world-class motorsports at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Hoosier State has cemented its reputation as a premier host for marquee events.

In the past two years alone, Indianapolis has proven itself to be a heavyweight host city thanks to an incredible array of events that came to town.

In 2024, the city welcomed the world with NBA All-Star Weekend, continued its tradition of excellence by hosting the NFL Scouting Combine and packed Lucas Oil Stadium for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. Add in rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament, championship events and the legendary Indianapolis 500, and Indy proved it could deliver on every stage.

That momentum carried into 2025 when Indianapolis doubled down with another record-breaking sports calendar.

Lucas Oil Stadium once again made headlines as it hosted WWE’s Royal Rumble, drawing tens of thousands of wrestling fans; the city reveled in an unforgettable Pacers and Racers celebration as the Pacers advanced to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals during the same week as the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500; and fans poured in for WNBA All-Star Game Weekend. The city also hosted multiple NCAA championships and regional tournaments.

Looking ahead, Indianapolis' success shows it will continue to host the country's biggest events.

Indiana’s sports story does not stop at the national spotlight, though. Across its cities and small towns, communities

welcome tournaments, invitationals and local competitions that keep athletes, families and fans engaged all year.

Here are a variety of smaller events hosted across the state that will appeal to groups of all ages:

CIRCUS AT THE BALLPARK / SPECIALTY THEME NIGHTS:

For a different spin on community fun, the Indianapolis Indians minor league baseball team has mastered the art of themed entertainment. Victory Field, set against the city skyline, is a summer staple not just for baseball but for specialty nights like Margarita Night or Circus at the Ballpark. On those evenings, the game itself blends with fan engagement. Stilt walkers wandering the concourse, acrobats dazzling between innings, and giveaways that keep crowds buzzing long after the final pitch.

Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

GRAND PARK EVENTS (WESTFIELD/ KOKOMO REGION):

Grand Park has become the beating heart of youth sports in the Midwest. The sprawling 400-acre complex, packed with diamonds and fields, hosts marquee tournaments like the Circle City Cup, Alliance Fastpitch Championship Series, and the Grail and MidAmerica Invitational throughout June and July. Teams travel in from across the region, parents cheer from the stands, and vendors keep crowds fueled with everything from barbecue to shaved ice. For young athletes, it is a chance to test their skills on one of the premier amateur stages in the country.

LIV GOLF (INDIANAPOLIS)

LIV Golf Indianapolis 2026 will take place August 21–23, 2026 at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, repeating as the host site of the LIV Golf League Individual Championship and marking

the League's second visit to the venue following a successful 2025 debut.

INDY IGNITE (FISHERS):

Making history as Indiana’s first professional women’s volleyball team, the Indy Ignite began play in January 2025 as a member of the Pro Volleyball Federation, now Major League Volleyball. The Ignite reached the championship match in their inaugural season, finishing as runners-up and quickly energizing local fans. The Fishers Event Center serves as the Ignite’s home court and played host to the 2025 All-Star Match.

IU FOUNDATION LITTLE 500 (BLOOMINGTON):

Indiana University's Little 500 is the largest collegiate bike race in the United States. It is widely known as "The World's Greatest College Weekend" with more than 25,000

people traveling to Bloomington each year to watch the race and participate in the week's festivities. The Little 500 has even gotten recognition on the silver screen: Breaking Away (1979) is an Academy Award-winning film about the race. The Little 500 is a week-long experience complete with giveaways, auxiliary events including an annual concert, celebrity appearances, and, of course, the famed bike races. The races themselves were originally modeled after the Indianapolis 500 and now include both a men's and women's race. Riders compete in four-person teams around the quarter-mile track at Bill Armstrong Stadium, the men's teams racing for 200 laps and the women's teams racing for 100 laps. The event occurs annually in late April.

INDIANA

SENTINELS

EXPANSION HOCKEY (COLUMBUS, STARTING 2025–26 SEASON):

In Columbus, hockey is about to carve a new niche. Beginning in the 2025–26 season, the Indiana Sentinels will take the ice as part of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL). Playing at the Hamilton Community Center and Ice Arena, the team will give the city its first professional hockey presence. The arena holds about 1,100 fans, offering an intimacy that promises an electric atmosphere.

INDIANA USSSA BASEBALL & SOFTBALL EVENTS (WESTFIELD, GREENSBURG, LOGANSPORT):

Youth baseball and fastpitch softball thrive across Indiana every summer, from small town fields in Greensburg and Logansport to the sprawling diamonds of Grand Park in Westfield. USSSA tournaments like the Easton HYPE NIT draw hundreds of players and families, filling bleachers and sidelines with the energy of a championship. Played under community field lights and fueled by hometown energy, these events capture the grassroots spirit of the game.

JUNIOR PROFESSIONAL GOLF ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS (WEST LAFAYETTE):

This past August, the JPGA Championships took place at the famed Purdue Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The competition drew national attention in part to Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods, competing in the event. The Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex was home to the 2021 PGA Tour’s “Boilermaker Classic” and has hosted many major collegiate events such as the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional, 2008 NCAA Men’s Championships and the 2003 NCAA Women’s Championships on the Pete Dye designed Kampen-Cosler Course.

The Top 10 Trends Powering the Sports Tourism Boom in 2026

The sports tourism and events industry has never been stronger than it is today. For our 11th year of the Sports Planning Guide trends article, we will highlight some of the reasons why, and what we see coming in the New Year. We hope you enjoy this year’s edition of the top 10 trends in sports tourism.

1

Mega Events – Our country is about to host two of the largest events the sports world has to offer. The World Cup next year and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will offer opportunities for destinations large and small to plug in.

2

Artificial Intelligence – The industry is just starting to sort out what AI can accomplish. While we are a bit skeptical of the overall (potentially negative) impact that may occur, this one is worth tracking and learning more about what this technology can and cannot do in our space.

3

Trade Show Relevance – The destinations and rights holders we serve are becoming more intentional in how they spend their time and resources. The normal speed dating model at the various trade shows that worked well 15 years ago is tired. More direct relationship bridge building between the relevant parties is becoming the norm. We recommend that everyone plug into our national association (SportsETA) and all that they offer throughout the year, and potentially one additional Fall show. Then augment that with additional biz dev technologies and in person outreach through FAMs and sales missions.

4

Intentional Use of Data – Our team at HUG is being asked more and more to chime in on the value of an event, from both the destination and event owner view. Today, there are more data sources that can help analyze a

sporting activity or event than in the past. We can geofence, track credit card and cell phone data, where those people came from and where they go. While DMOs have been mining this data for years, event owners are just now coming to the party. Leveraging these data pools is a major opportunity for destinations and rights holders alike.

5

DMOs Leading on Facilities – If the tourism leaders in a destination don’t take the lead on driving facility development, it’s likely nobody will. The top sports tourism communities we work with are leading the thought process, planning, funding, and programming for their venue “tool kit.” The proactive destinations on facilities will win in the long run.

6

Investment in “Silent Sports” –

Individual outdoor leisure sports did quite well during the pandemic - think canoe, kayak, paddleboard, golf, archery, trail running and cycling. All these sports grew during the pandemic and the destinations we serve are asking about how they keep that momentum rolling. How do we turn our trails into “competition” venues? What waterway access do we need to accommodate the leisure traveler and ALSO the competition level visitor? These questions come to our team on nearly every project we work on yet were not on the radar in most destinations five years ago.

7

Enhanced State Alliances – There are more state sports tourism alliances today than at any time in our industry’s history. The visit “insert city here” way of doing business has largely given way to come partner with “insert STATE name.” It’s a big shift, and a positive one for collaboration across the sports tourism community.

The last three are carryovers from last year.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

8

The Portal – The NCAA has launched its latest bid portal with new timelines. With facility development at the top of mind in many destinations we serve, who can get their venue offering to the finish line in time for this round (or the next round) of bids?

9

Statewide Alignment – Our team at HUG has seen a lot more intentional involvement in sports tourism from the state level across the country. There is more strategic thought and political influence around sports tourism than in the past. We are also seeing a much higher level of engagement from various state tourism offices. It seems like state tourism leaders have figured out that a majority of those they serve (DMOs

and CVBs) count sports tourism as a top priority. Good to see the higher ups leaning into our industry.

10

Highest Best Use – The three biggest parks/city trends we see across the country on the facility side are: (1) get pools off our books, (2) get golf courses off our books, and (3) convert tennis courts to pickleball. The theme here is what is our highest and best use of the real estate and facilities we have.

Thanks for all you do for your organizations and those you serve. Best wishes for an awesome 2026.

Yours in Sport, Jon
