TwentyFirst Modern Century

smpl Design Studio’s update of an Oakville MCM landmark brings it into the 21st century, while preserving – in some cases, literally! – its roots.

Photos by Ozimek Photography
A sunny perch in the breezeway leading to the primary wing, for morning coffee or checking emails.

The design reimagines some of the original home’s key features, such as a wide, low-slung profile and brick wall sheltering a private courtyard.

Oakville residents with an eye for mid-century modern design may have already been aware of the broad-shouldered, circa-1960 brick bungalow set back on a wooded property on Lakeshore Road. Recently, smpl Design Studio was commissioned to bring the house into the 21st century, while maintaining the spirit of the original architect’s vision.

Founder Joel Tanner launched smpl in Hamilton in 2010, with the goal of bringing sustainability and practical, livable modern design to residential projects across Canada. smpl’s handpicked team of over 20 experienced designers, drafters, and permit specialists specializes in creating bespoke homes for their clients that often become landmarks in their own right. With this house, “Our firm did not only the full architectural design program but also the interior design,” Tanner explains.

Once the smpl team got to work on the Oakville bungalow, it quickly became apparent that more than an update was needed; not much could be saved intact. However, they made a point of carefully preserving what they could. One of the most notable examples of this, Tanner notes, was to reclaim, clean and restore the original brick; it plays a feature role, both indoors and out, throughout the house.

The kitchen deploys the same material palette that recurs throughout: white oak cabinetry, black accents, and light concrete floors.

house,

In fact, indoor/outdoor living and connectivity is one of the guiding principles of the new design. From almost every vantage point, the property’s mature vegetation is clearly visible, and even the landscaping is designed to work in harmony with the design of the house. Another important recurring theme is the use of a narrow material palette of cedar soffiting, black metal ACM panels, and light-toned concrete as well as brick and glass.

“We opted for radiant in-floor heating, with beautiful large tile slabs on the floor in most spaces,” he continues, “to pay homage to the concrete floors that were ever so popular in midcentury modern homes.” All the millwork is from Trevisana, a favoured Italian millwork firm smpl frequently works with. “[Their work] was delicately designed with function and aesthetics both at the top of the list,” says Tanner. These materials, with slight variations, add cohesiveness to the home’s expansive footprint; after all, at just under 8,800 sq.ft., this is not a small house.

The jaw-dropping standalone fireplace would not have looked out of place in the original circa-1960
but is actually a custom design by smpl.
From almost every vantage point, the property’s mature vegetation is clearly visible, and even the landscaping is designed to work in harmony with the design of the house.

The circular front driveway leads to a covered concrete patio under a dramatically swooped canopy, which extends from the garage at the left to the outer edge of a brick courtyard wall at the right. The wall is a recreation of the original home’s front wall, with its four vertical cutouts, and shelters a private courtyard that extends off the in-laws’ quarters.

In the centre of the canopy, to keep it from becoming too monolithic – or too dark – a unique lozenge-shaped opening called a “halo cut” casts sunlight onto a little garden directly below, perfectly positioned so that a small Japanese maple will eventually grow through it to the sunlight above.

Just past the courtyard is a comparatively understated front door, sheltered by a screen of vertical slats. This is another motif that repeats, in a variety of forms, through the interior. Just inside, another slatted screen – this time, narrow vertical strips of white oak – loosely separates the hall from the adjacent dining room.

ABOVE: Set far back from a busy Oakville road, at night the house is a glowing mirage through the trees. LEFT: The private inner courtyard, secluded among the trees surrounding the house.

This is where another of the home’s parade of unique artistic flourishes appears: a conical, black-metal fireplace chimney, fabricated by CFD Custom Fireplace Design from smpl’s design, suspended over a circular hearth set in a low-slung black console. It’s absolutely functional; it’s also as cool-looking as an Apollo space capsule.

Glass walls, interior windows and skylights continually broaden views and light inside and out, and sometimes provide unexpected opportunities to connect with the woods outside. The TV room – a wonderfully relaxed space, furnished with slouchy sofas to lounge and watch the tube – features a pair of large interior windows that overlook the indoor pool (a rescue from the original design, updated with an infinity edge and a terrazzo-panelled water feature). The pool, in turn, has its own ceiling-height windows overlooking the trees.

Oakville bylaws protect established trees on wooded properties, but the smpl team were already adamant about respecting the old trees here, some of which are over 200 years old. However, it presented them with a puzzle of sorts when it came to the new addition that would become the primary wing, since excavating for an in-ground foundation would have damaged ancient roots.

“A project of this calibre always presents unique challenges,” explains Tony Vieira of Geometric Consulting + Management, who worked with smpl on the technical aspects of the renovation.

“This is especially true when integrating modern structural elements with older structures. For example, the architects and engineers designed a 2,000-squarefoot steel structure that had to be built around a 200-year-old tree.” Essentially, the solution they devised was to raise

The original indoor pool was completely rebuilt, with an infinity edge, terrazzo waterfall feature and its own woodsy vista.
Walls of glass facing the courtyard fill the primary bedroom with light, while maintaining coziness and privacy.

the whole structure about two feet above ground on low pylons, and connect it to the main space via a glassed-in bridge.

Landscape designer Meaghan Chabot of Meg + Kennedy notes that although all those big trees meant there were inevitably restrictions in what would grow, smpl’s approach to the design, both indoors and out, was a perfect jumping-off point for the work she and her team did.

The functional and spacious ensuite and dressing area feature another perspective on the trees outside: this time from above, through skylights.

In places that were unsuited to live planting, Chabot adds, they “planted” with stone: for example, a stylized dry riverbed under the primary-wing bridge, an artistic alternative to mulch or pavers.

“Joel did such an amazing job on the design, and I wanted to add on to it,” she says. “The circles in the driveway, for example, are continued in the plantings in the central bed, and we repeated the line of the halo cut in the front patio garden. And there are a lot of small pop-up places through the property,” including the little courtyard in the front, and a quiet meditation space near the primary wing, with an intricate, maze-like design constructed with pebbled pavers.

“Every square inch of the home has a design element to enjoy – including even the underside of the staircase to the basement rec room that features an indoor garden,” says Tanner. “It was always an intriguing house for people passing by; but here, we not only updated it but made the vegetation the main event. That’s what piques people’s imagination.”

Design

Nestled within Muskoka’s breathtaking landscape, this family cottage was designed to seamlessly blend into its natural surroundings. The homeowners envisioned a retreat that embodied the charm of Old Muskoka—aesthetic warmth, artisanal craftsmanship, and an organic connection to the land. With that vision in mind, Barnard & Speziale carefully curated a design that was anything but white and shiny, opting instead for a dark, moody palette that quietly recedes into the rocky shoreline and wooded scenery.

Natural, local, and handcrafted materials played a key role in bringing authenticity to the space. Reclaimed wood beams, custom-stained cedar shakes, and a stunning stone fireplace create a sense of history, making the home feel as though it has stood for generations. At the heart of it all is the spectacular three-sided glass Muskoka Room—an inviting space where panoramic views take centre stage. Oversized glass doors open to allow in fresh breezes, while stone floors and rustic detailing ensure a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

For these returning clients, the home is more than just a getaway—it’s a legacy. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed to enhance connection, whether with nature or with family and friends.

Cedar Springs Landscape Group

Transforming a Vision into Reality

For this newly built home, Cedar Springs Landscape Group led a complete property transformation, turning a blank slate into a dynamic outdoor retreat. Partnering with Onyx Pools for the swimming pool and Sport Court Ontario for the sport court, Cedar Springs handled every other aspect in-house—from landscape design to expert masonry and carpentry. The result is a space that seamlessly balances everyday family living with effortless entertaining.

Terracing the naturally sloped backyard was both a functional and aesthetic triumph, adding depth and interest throughout the design. Wide natural stone steps lead from the dining patio to the pool area, where a raised spa spills over elegant waterfall feature walls. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen, a fire pit lounge, and dual poolside cabanas offer endless opportunities for relaxation and hosting. A louvred pergola with swing chairs provides a shaded retreat, while the vibrant half-court sport court is perfect for active play, complete with lighting for evening games.

The homeowners are thrilled with their transformed backyard, calling it the best home improvement experience they’ve had. This exceptional outdoor space is now a true extension of their home—one they enjoy daily with family and friends.

Meg & Kennedy Landscape Design

A Thoughtful Balance Between Architecture & Nature

For this project, Meg & Kennedy Landscape Design embraced the challenge of integrating a modern home into its lush, wooded surroundings. Every aspect of the exterior design—from hardscape layouts and the sports court to planting areas, front gates, and the backyard fire feature—was carefully planned to enhance the home’s presence rather than compete with it. The goal was to create a landscape that felt as though it had always been there, seamlessly embracing the architecture while maintaining a refined, intentional aesthetic.

Working within an urban forest setting required a deep respect for the native environment. The design balances structured plantings near the home with wilder, more organic landscaping as the property extends outward. A standout feature is the elegant driveway entrance and courtyard, where a stunning water feature is framed by overlapping curves that echo the home’s geometry. Layered textures and subtle colour variations add depth, creating a striking first impression.

One of the biggest challenges was managing privacy in a densely wooded environment with limited sunlight. A full-height backdrop wall behind the rear fireplace elegantly defines the space, offering both warmth and seclusion. The result is a serene retreat that feels effortlessly at home in its

ProScape Land Design

A Backyard Resort Redefined

After selling their cottage, this homeowner envisioned a backyard retreat that could rival any vacation property. ProScape Land Design took on the challenge, overseeing the full design and layout to create a seamless blend of luxury and functionality. Now, the homeowners find themselves spending nearly every evening outdoors, fully immersed in their private oasis.

The transformation includes a stunning pool and spa, multiple seating areas for relaxation and entertaining, and a professional-grade basketball court for added recreation. A stylish cabana serves as a central gathering space, while carefully curated plantings soften the design and enhance the natural beauty of the property. Every detail was meticulously planned to ensure a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

One of the standout features—both for the homeowners and the ProScape team—is the elegant pedestal-mounted fire features. These striking elements not only provide warmth and ambiance but also serve as captivating focal points that elevate the entire outdoor experience.

This backyard is more than just a landscape; it’s a true resort-style sanctuary, offering a perfect balance of sophistication and comfort right at home.

LUXURY

BY THE LAKE

How purchasers Russ and Ella seized the opportunity to make The Harbour Club their soon-to-be new waterfront residence.

With dreams of escaping the big city for a more serene lifestyle, purchasers Russ and Ella finally found what they had been dreaming of at The Harbour Club in Port Dalhousie. This rare gem offered everything they desired, with breathtaking views, refined elegance, and an active, vibrant community by the water.

For the couple, the nautical setting was a deciding factor in their purchase. “The waterfront location was of paramount importance, significantly influencing our decision to buy,” says Russ.

Integrated into a restored century-old building, The Harbour Club is redefining luxury waterfront living in the Niagara Region. With thoughtfully designed units featuring high

ceilings, expansive layouts, and private docks overlooking a 30-slip marina, this exclusive development seamlessly blends historic charm with contemporary sophistication. “A unique feature of The Harbour Club is the boat slips available to those purchasing a unit,” says Sheldon D. Rosen, president of The Harbour Club. “Essentially, we are building a resort-like environment and yacht club, in which one can reside full-time.”

Port Dalhousie’s charm and lifestyle played an equally important role in the couple's choice. Known for its picturesque harbour, boutique restaurants, and proximity to world-class wineries, this historic village is undergoing an exciting revitalization. For Russ and Ella, The Harbour Club offered the perfect blend of elegance and adventure. “We appreciate the opportunity for an active lifestyle, with access to watersports, biking, and scenic hiking trails that align perfectly with our future aspirations,” says Ella.

The distinctive award-winning development is drawing interest from across Ontario, particularly the Greater Toronto Area, notes Rosen. Residents will enjoy an unparalleled planned amenity package, including a concierge service, a private fitness centre with a yoga room, a dog grooming station, and even a car-share program. The interiors are equally impressive,

access to exciting activities like festivals, shows, concerts, and sports events – all close by,” says Russ. “The unique location, private docks, and captivating water views truly distinguish this property.”

Beyond its elegant residences, The Harbour Club is poised to become a landmark within Port Dalhousie. The century-old heritage building was once home to Maple Leaf Rubber Company, and later to Lincoln Fabrics. “This historical building has stunning architectural features that make it one-of-a-kind,” states Carmen Campagnaro, managing partner at Valour Group, the joint developer of The Harbour Club. With a planned year-round restaurant overlooking a scenic waterfall and a thoughtfully integrated heritage aesthetic, the development seamlessly merges past and present. “Securing a unit as an investment could be an excellent choice, as this has now become a premier destination,” says Campagnaro. With construction slated for 2025, the opportunity to own a residence in this prestigious waterfront community at pre-construction pricing is soon to set sail.

For Russ and Ella, The Harbour Club represents more than just a home; it’s the realization of a dream. “The Harbour Club checked all my boxes…creating an immediate sense of belonging that felt unmistakably right,” says Russ.

Accent Walls are Alive & Well

Creating accents in a home is a very special thing – and it doesn’t have to be hard or expensive, if you give it a little thought.

Call me crazy, but after all the boxes of holiday decorations are put away, I like to take a good look at my home, and am always inspired to do a mini refresh of some kind. Nothing too serious, though: it can be as simple as moving some furniture around, or buying bouquets of spring-like flowers to brighten up corners or surfaces in my home.

I love a good focal point, and I’m often inspired after a holiday or other event to create a new one somewhere in my home. There are so many great ideas to do just that, and you can transform any space without a major overhaul.

and framed in other door openings in crisp black metal. The look was very sharp and it definitely made her home more unique!

An accent wall is an easy and inexpensive way to add drama and create an instant focal point. Simply choose one wall and paint it in a different, and usually strong, wall colour that complements your existing colour palette.

MEET THE DESIGNER

Not long ago, I was working on a design project for a client and she expressed a wish for some colourful accents throughout her home. Her colour palette was neutral, but I understood her wish to have some standout features. So we arched some regular openings,

Alternatively, consider using black or charcoal. The eye is immediately drawn to this achromatic tone. (Adding a collage of black and white art framed in white makes for a dramatic presentation.)

The great thing about painting one wall is that you save on the quantity of paint needed, plus your time. When you get tired of it (or move), repainting a single wall is an easy fix!

One very special alternative to painting a full wall is to try painting a “faux” arch. (It creates an eclectic and boho feel that I personally love.)

How about trimming out an entranceway wall and painting it all out in one colour? The eye automatically sees the trim detail. I call this the “Parisian apartment” look. Everything is painted one colour, but you still perceive the detailing. So subtle and so effective.

Wood slats or fluted wood panelling have been having a moment. Consider doing this on a wall behind a bed; it makes for a fresh modern feel. You could also use it as a backsplash or on cabinet detailing.

Shiplap is still alive and well, and I love using it both inside and for exterior finishes. It gives perfect beach vibes.

Another option is to install wood strips horizontally. This naturally lowers a wall, and makes a nice backdrop in a bedroom or family room. I have a friend who used flooring material on her wall to create the most amazing herringbone headboard! Vertical panelling creates the illusion of height and complements mid-century or Scandi decor. You generally only need one wall for this dramatic installation.

Another easy way to create an eyecatching focal point is using wallpaper. We know wallpaper is having a wonderful resurgence these days. And murals are having a moment too! Selecting a single wall – whether in a small powder room, dining room or bedroom – and papering it boldly makes an exciting statement. Don’t be afraid to choose large-scale patterns, even in small rooms.

I especially love murals that mimic natural materials like concrete. Used as a backdrop, they work so well to create an industrial vibe. The 3-D effect is very realistic.

And don't forget about textured wallpaper! Grasscloth has such a modern feel, and used on the back wall of a shelving unit, definitely creates a statement.

It takes some finesse, but a good focal wall filled with art can look gorgeous.

Tiling a wall is another way to create a focal point. In my own kitchen, instead of installing shelves on either side of my stainless steel exhaust fan, I decided to tile the entire wall in a marble herringbone pattern. I love its drama and simplicity.

The concept of creating a focal point is not just limited to your walls. Consider painting a piece of furniture or a wall unit: a contrasting colour will pull attention to it.

Enter the fireplace, which of course is a natural focal point in any room. I love to use a single colour to paint the brick around fireplaces, including the wall above and beside it – even if that includes built-in wall cabinets. Firelight draws us to it, and painting out the entire wall is a neat way to harness the glow.

A simpler option to create visual interest in a room is using artwork. I love a wall filled with eclectic pieces. It takes some finesse, but a good focal wall filled with art can look gorgeous. Try laying your art on the floor to create a “grid.” Find a common denominator, like colour or similar frames. Then add something unexpected!

If you have a great view, consider painting the window frame a bold colour to “frame” it. Or why not paint out the trim in a room in a contrasting colour? Instant impact.

Here’s the easiest idea of all: gather an amazing foraged bouquet of wildflowers on a walk, or arrange a huge bouquet of roses in a single colour. I often put a bouquet like this in my entranceway, and it makes a beautiful bold statement.

It literally can be that simple, and that impactful.

The Interior Design Show threw its annual party in January showcasing the newest and best of Canadian and international design.

The 26th annual Interior Design Show, held once again in the North Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre over four days in late January, offered design lovers the latest and snazziest in residential design and more, from across Canada and the world.

In the quarter-century since its debut, IDS has become a fixture of the thriving Toronto design scene as the place to see what’s new in everything from flooring and appliances to bath fixtures, architecturally designed hardware and solid surfacing, along with a wide variety of less expected offerings under the general design umbrella.

Among the 220-plus exhibitors this year were longtime supporters like LG, Cosentino, Benjamin Moore and other noteworthy names. And the number and quality of Canadian exhibitors has never been better, including stone-surfacing maker Anatolia; bath fixture distributor House of Rohl; and venerated furniture and upholsterer Silva Custom Furniture (who this year partnered with Calgary designer Aly Velji for his exuberant Modern Heritage upholstered furnishings collection). There were also, as always, a few interesting newcomers as well, like Montreal furniture fabricators De Gaspé, there in part to publicize their new showroom in Toronto’s up-and-coming Carlaw design district.

But no IDS visit is complete without doing a circuit around the outer edges of the show floor, where you’ll find the smaller artisans, often one-person shops or small studios, offering some of the most creative work to be seen at the show.

A few of the creative companies that caught our eye: Archilog’s custommade fireplace log holders hand-forged by wrought-iron craftsman Gary Shaw; Eastern Townships quilt artist Marilyn Armande, who uses an industrial long-arm sewing machine to “draw” with thread; and wire artist Anne Clifford Studio’s delicate pieces of horses and other figures.

IDS is always worth the drive into the city to see, and this year was no exception. We’re already anticipating what next year’s show will bring.

The LG/Signature Suite booth featured a show-stopping 100+ size TV, along with the latest from the brand’s prestige appliance line.
Calgary designer Aly Velji’s exuberant custom upholstered pieces created in partnership with Silva Custom Furniture, included this fun ultra-comfy chair in vibrant citron, with a box-pleated skirt.
Solid surface brand Cosentino, makers of Silestone, Dekton, and other familiar names, highlighted some of its newest sustainable lines such as Earthic and Le Chic Boheme.

“H OM” The Zen of

Megan Arthurs, TV home organizing expert and founder of H:OM Organizing, knows the decluttering process involves a lot more than just sorting things into piles. It’s about our overall well-being.

rofessional organizer Megan Arthurs understands there’s a lot more to the decluttering process than simply choosing what to keep and what to discard. The stuff we tend to collect in our homes can have profound implications for our overall emotional health.

As founder of the evocatively named H:OM Organizing and a frequent TV guest expert, Arthurs helps viewers and clients navigate the sometimes thorny process of going from disorder to clutter-freedom. Your home, she says, should be your safe place, the place where you feel most in control; and an orderly, well-organized environment can have a significant effect on your wellbeing.

Megan didn’t arrive at her calling in the conventional way. She comes from a fine arts background and spent the first part of her life as a professional dancer, eventually earning a master’s degree in dance. But by age 26, she says, “I got to a point where I felt there was a different calling, in something other than dance. I wanted to get into something entrepreneurial.” Organizing was a natural choice, since she’d had a knack for it since she was a little girl, and she discovered there was a gap in this kind of service in her part of the GTA.

he timing – the beginning of the pandemic – could have been risky to launch a brand-new business, but in fact it proved to be opportune: people, forced to stay home, were having to figure out how to carve home offices out of cluttered kitchens and bedrooms, or simply got tired of staring at piles of junk. The company quickly took off; today, H:OM employs a staff of five, has earned awards that include Sagen Next Generation Leader of the Year Award for The Oakville Awards for Business Excellence, and serves clientele across the GTA and beyond.

resident organizing expert, and regularly appears on The Good Stuff with Mary Berg and CTV Your Morning. “I love doing TV,” she says. “It appeals to the performer in me – I am a former dancer after all! – and I love being able to share my message with the world.” She particularly enjoys the buzz that comes from working with creative people both in front of and behind the camera.

It may have been her artistic bent that, early on, helped her become attuned to the emotional aspects of organizing. She freely acknowledges the basic decluttering process is simple: you take items, one at a time, and place them into one of four piles: keep; toss/recycle; donate; and relocate (to another room). Then dispatch each pile to the trash, donation centre, or wherever it’s meant to go. But to leave it at that ignores the indecision and even fear that the process can generate, and the reason why so many of us put it off for so long.

And yet, procrastination usually just makes things worse. “Sometimes, something as simple as a disorganized household can cause tension and alter your emotional wellbeing for the worse. We’ve all had experiences where we didn’t feel in control of our environment, and that can be very stressful.”

“Sometimes, something as simple as a disorganized household can cause tension and alter your emotional wellbeing for the worse. We’ve all had experiences where we didn’t feel in control of our environment, and that can be very stressful.”

Along with decluttering, Megan and her team offer complete home organizing services as well, which for many of us is just as challenging. “Once the clutter is cleared, we create a system in the space by giving all of the items a 'home' and ensuring everything is visible, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing,” she explains. “Many of our clients are young, growing, and very active families, and time is not on their side. They really benefit from having organizational systems in the home, to help with ease, flow and routine.”

Not long after she launched her firm, Megan came to the attention of Jennifer Singh of She’s Newsworthy Media, a PR coach who specializes in helping women entrepreneurs land on TV. Singh helped her book her first TV appearance on CP24 Breakfast, offering advice on spring cleaning during lockdown, which led to landing appearances on morning shows like Global News Morning, Breakfast Television, CHCH Morning Live, and others. Nowadays, Arthurs is CTV's

It’s a very common feeling, she goes on, to have difficulty letting go of things. “We tend to hang on to things for all kinds

But, as she points out, there’s another way to look at all of this. “Remember that decluttering can also be very powerful. By doing this, you are gaining control of your environment and creating space for the future.” Growing piles can quickly become overwhelming, and by tackling the clutter you are, in a very real sense, reclaiming your life back.

All well and good, but where does one start? Arthurs has a simple, enticingly reasonable suggestion: start small. “Pick one drawer, one shelf or even just one pile, and organize that. Then the next day, do another. That way you make it doable, and you’ll begin to see results.” Sure, you might feel some feels, but in small doses, and before long the experience will seem less intimidating.

could organize for five minutes every night before you brush your teeth.” Eventually it will become a routine, and will help you keep clutter – well, more or less –under control.

“Organizing is ‘deep’ work,” says Megan. “It often brings up a lot of emotion and psychological issues. If you’re struggling to let go of something, it can often be an indicator of issues deep inside, maybe even from childhood. In a way, it can help you know yourself better and even grow.

“Organizing is ‘deep’ work. It often brings up a lot of emotion and psychological issues. If you’re struggling to let go of something, it can often be an indicator of issues deep inside, maybe even from childhood. In a way, it can help you know yourself better and even grow."

Conquering accumulated clutter, however, is only half the battle. “Many people struggle with clutter because they haven’t gotten into a routine of organizing,” she says. To help keep your home from getting out of control again, she recommends a process called habit-stacking.

“It’s a way to create a new habit, by ‘stacking’ it on to a habit you already have,” she explains. “For example, you

YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

Christopher Invidiata’s inLegacyLuxury Real Estate

How Christopher’s journey began, and the philosophy that drives his success.

For four decades, the Invidiata name has been synonymous with excellence, integrity, and innovation in luxury real estate. What began as a career pivot to spend more time with family has evolved into a legacy that has shaped Oakville’s high-end market and extended beyond.

From introducing groundbreaking marketing techniques to setting record-breaking sales, Christopher and The Invidiata Team have elevated the industry while building lasting relationships with clients and the community. Their commitment to excellence has been recognized consistently; notably, The Invidiata Team was voted the #1 Top Real Estate Agency in the GTA for 2020, 2021, and 2022. Additionally, they achieved the prestigious title of #1 RE/MAX Team worldwide in both 2007 and 2012.

As he marks 40 years in business, Christopher reflects on his journey, the milestones achieved, and the future of The Invidiata Team.

Looking back on 40 years in real estate, what inspired you to start your career in this industry?

The Invidiata Team has become a trusted name in luxury real estate. What do you believe has been the key to your long-term success?

Our success is rooted in a simple philosophy: prioritize the client's needs above all else. From the beginning, we've focused on building relationships rather than merely completing transactions. Real estate is about understanding people's dreams and guiding them through one of life's most significant decisions. This “client for life” mentality has been the cornerstone of our approach: “No matter the size of the home, every client is treated with the same level of care.”

What was the real estate market like in Oakville when you first started, and how has it evolved over the decades?

Real estate was never part of my original plan, but life has a way of guiding you to where you're meant to be. When my daughter was just nine months old and starting to walk, I realized I didn't want to miss those precious moments. My father suggested real estate, knowing it would offer the flexibility to be present with my family. That decision set everything in motion, leading to a fulfilling career spanning four decades.

In the early days, the market moved at a much slower pace. Every offer had to be presented in person, requiring face-toface negotiations with the other agent. Technology was limited; our updates came from black-and-white computer printouts. To differentiate ourselves, we introduced colour photography and night shots, which were revolutionary at the time. Over the years, Oakville has been transformed significantly. Southeast Oakville has become a hub for luxury homes, with properties now reaching values in the tens of millions. The downtown core has also evolved, with revitalization efforts enhancing the community and making Oakville a sought-after destination.

Family seems to play a significant role in your business. How have your children contributed to The Invidiata Team?

Family is at the heart of everything we do. Both of my children, Shae and Caleb, are agents and play integral roles in The Invidiata Team. Both have been a part of the company for over a decade, serving clients throughout Toronto, Oakville, and the GTA—Shae founding [free-them], a non-profit organization dedicated to ending human trafficking, and Caleb a firefighter with Toronto Fire—further solidifying our family-driven approach. Giving back and supporting charities is deeply important to us, shaping both our business values and our community involvement.

You’ve built lasting relationships with clients and the community. How important is relationship-building in your business? Relationships are the foundation of our success. When clients trust you with one of the most important decisions of their lives, it's a responsibility we take seriously. We've built a reputation based on integrity, expertise, and consistently putting our clients' needs first. Many clients have been with us for years, and it's incredibly

rewarding to serve multiple generations of families in their real estate journeys.

Oakville and the surrounding communities have grown significantly. What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the region?

Oakville has always been a desirable place to live, but the demand has surged, especially in Southeast Oakville. Properties that were once considered luxurious have been reimagined, with homes now selling for tens of millions. The scarcity of land has further driven up property values.

Simultaneously, downtown Oakville has undergone a remarkable transformation. The introduction of new businesses, dining experiences, and revitalized public spaces has turned it into more than just a residential area; it's now a vibrant community where people aspire to live, work, and connect.

What’s next for you and Invidiata Realty as you celebrate this milestone? This milestone offers an opportunity for reflection and growth. We're committed

to strengthening our brand locally while expanding into the Greater Toronto Area and exploring new markets. Our mission remains consistent: to provide exceptional experiences for our clients!

Finally, if you could sum up your 40-year journey in a few words, what would they be?

When you love what you do and the people you do it for, it never feels like work. It's been a privilege to assist families and individuals in finding their homes. This is just the beginning; the next generation of The Invidiata Team is poised to continue our tradition of excellence and community service.

It turned out so well that Chapman suggested that she start her own business. “I think her stamp of approval at that time was so valuable, because really she's an industry leader.

“I am so grateful for her, and the first few studios that took a chance on me,” she continues. “One was Frank and Melissa Giorgio of Canadian Dance Unit, who taught me dance as a young child; and I still do costumes for them today.”

In 2014, DeBartolo founded Silver Lining Costume Design, which specializes in recreational and competitive dance costumes.

It’s super fun. I love working with kids and bringing a creative vision to life.

The year after starting her costume design company, DeBartolo spent a summer in New York City studying at Parsons School of Design, as a way to gain an understanding of the industry more than the element of design itself. As she explains, “I wanted to make sure that I had the skills and language so I could better lead a team.”

DeBartolo has carved out a niche for herself in costume design. Her specialty is functional, “pedestrian style” costumes, which deliver the look of a suit with the functionality a dancer needs (pants, blazers, vests, and so on designed from a thick neoprene-like material). “I’m known in the dance industry for that.” She also creates more typical costumes for clients ranging from teens to toddlers (think plenty of rhinestones) which, she says, “are adorable.”

Projects usually begin in October or November, with fittings starting in January/ February. From design to drop-off, the process takes about three to four months. “Right now I think my final count this year for costumes was over 800,” she says.

first year in business. “She's amazing. She's a wizard. She's actually one of the few people I know that still draws patterns by hand.”

Costume design, she says, is a somewhat seasonal business that follows the school year. “There was a period of time where I did contract marketing and then odd kind of jobs to fill the summer months. Then someone said, ‘You're so stylish. You should be a wardrobe stylist.’”

After sending a few cold emails on a Thursday, by Friday she’d landed an assistant stylist job with a Monday start. “I fell in love with it!” she says.

Her commercial wardrobe styling work carries through print and long format. Her client roster includes Canadian Tire, Heinz,

She also styles for Canadian retired ice dancer Tessa Virtue. The two connected during a photo shoot for MAC Cosmetics Canada. “She's someone I really admire. She's always a really fun one to work with.”

DeBartolo describes Virtue’s look as classic and timeless. “I always joke with her whenever I'm working with her that she's actually my most dangerous person to pull select style elements for, because we have very similar styles. So it's always ‘one for you, one for me’,” she laughs.

Coming from a family of creative minds and entrepreneurs, DeBartolo revels in being around people who are always pushing themselves to do better. “It inspires me to want to do the same.”

Luxury meets community at

FOGO ISLAND INN

Hospitality meets sustainability with unique architecture, wild ocean views and local cuisine on a remote island off Newfoundland

The best amenity at the Fogo Island Inn – a striking, X-shaped hotel on stilts – is the people of Fogo.

Their stories, heritage and labour are tied to everything at the award-winning inn, designed by Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect Todd Saunders to evoke a traditional outport fishing station. The hotel’s address is in the community of Joe Batt’s Arm, population 778, but the inn says its location is “on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth.”

Community links are everywhere in the 43,000-square-foot building, from locally crafted furniture to the cheerful patchwork quilt on my bed. (The neat signature of maker Sadie Edwards was stitched in green thread on one corner.)

Photos by Fogo Island Inn
The Fogo Island Inn is perched on stilts and hugs the North Atlantic coastline.

It’s especially evident in the character of the community hosts, who take guests on half-day excursions around their island home. They tell us their families have lived on Fogo Island for upwards of seven generations, since their ancestors arrived from Europe to fish cod in the mid-1700s. The Irish-tinged lilt in their speech makes their links to the old country clear as they take visitors on birdwatching tours or hikes, telling stories about Fogo life along the way.

Employing community hosts is part of innkeeper-founder and social entrepreneur Zita Cobb’s vision for blending tourism with Fogo-sustaining “cultural continuity.” Cobb, an eighthgeneration Fogo Islander, grew up in a fishing family home without running water or electricity. When the cod industry collapsed in the late 1960s, her family had to leave.

She migrated to Ontario, where she studied business. Her career in the high-tech industry was so successful that she retired in her 40s. In 2004, she founded Shorefast with her brothers to maximize economic development for Fogo, capitalizing on the island’s unique attributes – Cobb knew visitors would want to come there. With the Fogo Island Inn, built in 2013, Shorefast would give them a memorable place to stay.

A DAY WITH AUBREY

I felt an instant kinship with community host Aubrey Payne, a soft-spoken 74-year-old with a gentle smile, who arrived at the inn wearing a purple button-down shirt and a Tilley hat to take us on our half-day tour. We asked to visit Tilting, a small fishing community of 250 people a few minutes’ drive down the road from the inn that’s been called “more Irish than Ireland.”

Amid brightly painted houses, white wooden fences and laundry flapping on the line, is Phil’s Shed, a workshop beside Phil and Maureen Foley’s house. It does double duty as a lively clubhouse for music, dancing and storytelling when friends, including tourists, drop by.

Inside the shed, Payne told us about the day he nearly drowned while pulling up snow crab traps in a growing storm

alongside his wife Marie, who also captains a fishing boat. He fell overboard into the frigid North Atlantic and feared that, like his grandfather and uncle, he’d die in the icy water. But somehow, Marie managed to haul him out of the ocean as the trawler pitched in the waves.

Payne led us up a rocky, mossy track called Turpin’s Trail; the fierce wind swatted our hats and coattails as we passed the oldest Irish cemetery in North America, where some of the weathered markers bear dates from the 1700s.

The historic met the fantastically modern at the sea-facing end of the trail, with the brilliant white Squish Studio. Here there are four studios, also designed by the inn’s architect, Saunders. Shorefast’s Fogo Island Arts residence program invites creatives from all over the world to use them, and art projects produced there are shown at the inn’s spacious gallery.

THE COST

The Fogo Island Inn has been called a once-in-a-lifetime stay. And with room rates starting at $2,875 for double occupancy with a three-night minimum, that’s understandable.

The rates at the Relais & Châteaux property, recently recognized with Michelin three keys “for stays that are second to none,” includes all meals. That includes room service and a communal long-table crab and lobster “boil-up” with all the fixings, held in the spacious Saunders-designed Shed building behind the inn. Also included are most guided excursions and gear, from bikes to hiking poles. You can also sign a car out at the front desk if you want to visit places like the Fogo Clay Studio for a pottery class. I enjoyed the foraging walk and wild tea blending lesson with lead outdoor activity guide Lorie Penton.

There’s no tipping: An economic nutrition-style label created by Cobb shows inn guests where their money goes. More than 50 per cent is spent on wages. Profits are reinvested in the community.

Getting to Fogo Island isn’t easy. Most visitors fly to Gander International Airport. The inn has a land and ferry pick-up and return service from and to Gander, for $1,100 for up to four people. Or rent a car at the airport for the onehour drive to the ferry; the crossing takes about 50 minutes. (If money is no object, there’s also the option of booking a six-passenger helicopter for $5,000 each way.)

THE FOOD

A Daybreak Breakfast in a wooden box is left outside your door at 6 a.m. with a freshly baked pastry and tea or coffee. I settled into a rocking chair and watched the morning begin from my room’s floorto-ceiling windows.

The dining room is a jewel box with windows on three sides, a soaring ceiling and chandeliers made from marine rope twisted into wildflower shapes by Dutch designer Frank Tjepkema. Lunch was interrupted one day by sightings of an exuberant breaching whale.

Executive Chef Timothy Charles starts each lunch and dinner with a cup of warming broth and a few house-made pickles. “The whole idea was that we would have a way to recentre, to open your palate up,” he said.

Charles sees the food guests eat as fuel for getting out in the community. The flavours and ingredients celebrate the place. Of course, the seafood is exceptional; I’ve never had better cod or lobster. I also loved the vegetarian lunch of brothy greens and beans.

About 80 per cent of everything used in the kitchen is local, including many foraged items. The rest is purchased from Newfoundland’s traditional trading partners, like Portugal.

On an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth.

OTHER THINGS TO DO:

Drop by the 37-seat cinema and settle into a red plush seat to watch one of several National Film Board of Canada documentaries about Fogo Island. The movie-house snack is a package of Canadian-made Hawkins Cheezies.

Take a morning yoga class on a sheltered upper deck with instructor Jennifer Charles. Relax in the woodburning sauna. The rooftop hot tubs overlook the ocean and are a fantastic place for a sunset soak as the light leaves Canada for the day.

A boat trip to Little Fogo Islands goes to an abandoned fishing community where you can walk amid collapsing fishing stages from the 1930s and visit the restored circa-1867 St. Anne’s Church. Watch Atlantic puffins and murres. Sometimes islanders bring their sheep over for grazing in flat-bottomed boats.

Climb the stairs at Brimstone Head Park, to the spot members of the Flat Earth Society claim is one of the four corners of the flat Earth.

One of Toronto's most desirable locations, Hotel X Toronto stands out as the perfect urban getaway. And when you add the hotel’s special package that extends a friendly paw to guests’ four-legged family members, it becomes even more special.

I recently arrived at the hotel, a destination brimming with luxury and charm, in the company of my own two furry companions, Blue and Beau.

Location Perks

One of the many highlights of Hotel X is its prime location. Situated on the grounds of Exhibition Place, the hotel offers proximity to some iconic Toronto venues such as Budweiser Stage for concerts, BMO Field for thrilling matches, and the Enercare Centre for exhibitions. For those who crave the outdoors, Trillium Park’s picturesque waterfront trails are just a stone’s throw away.

The hotel also provides an eco-friendly Outbound House Car Service, making city exploration effortless and stylish. This thoughtful touch epitomizes Hotel X’s commitment to convenience and guest satisfaction.

Check-In: A Warm Welcome

First impressions matter, and Hotel X excels at making guests feel valued. From the moment I stepped into the hotel, the experience was seamless. The Concierge’s efficiency during check-in was only surpassed by their warmth – even Blue and Beau received personalized greetings as part of the exclusive VIP pet program. Such details elevate the experience, making every guest, furry or otherwise, feel special.

The pet program left no stone unturned. Blue and Beau were spoiled with a luxurious doggie bed, water and food bowls, premium treats, fetch toys, a Lick Mat, and a chic bandana. For added

convenience, the hotel even offers a spa boutique, pet-sitting services, and curated pet-friendly activities. Hotel X’s dedication to ensuring pets feel as pampered as their owners is unmatched.

Room with a View

Our pet-friendly room was nothing short of spectacular. With floor-to-ceiling windows, we were treated to panoramic views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline. Waking up to such breathtaking scenery, complete with the CN Tower in the distance, set the tone for a truly luxurious stay. The thoughtfully designed room balanced elegance and comfort, creating a sanctuary for relaxation.

The Guerlain Spa Experience

Once Blue and Beau were settled, I indulged in some much-needed selfcare at the Guerlain Spa, the first of its kind in Canada. Before my arrival, I had a phone consultation with a specialist to select a treatment tailored to my needs. I opted for the Imperial Longevity Facial, a transformative experience featuring Guerlain’s signature Orchidée Impériale products.

The treatment’s expert techniques toned facial muscles, refined contours, and left my skin glowing. The estheticians’ skill and the spa’s tranquil atmosphere provided a rejuvenating escape from the bustling city below.

Kandy Art Gallery

Following the spa, I explored the Kandy Art Gallery, home to world-renowned photographer Neil Dankoff. Commissioned by Hotel X, Dankoff’s stunning works form the largest fine art photography collection in Canadian history. His breathtaking panorama of the Toronto skyline perfectly captures the view from the hotel – a testament to the beauty of both the art and the setting. This gallery is a must-visit for anyone seeking inspiration.

Dinner at The Valerie

Dinner at The Valerie was a highlight of the evening. Perched on the rooftop, the restaurant offers dazzling city views alongside its Japanese-inspired menu. I savoured Wagyu Tataki, Ebi Fritters, and a selection of baked hand rolls, all perfectly paired with cocktails crafted by skilled mixologists.

The Valerie was a highlight of the evening. Perched on the rooftop, the restaurant offers dazzling city views alongside its Japaneseinspired menu.

After dinner, I couldn’t resist a dip in the 55-foot heated rooftop pool. Swimming under the stars, with the twinkling skyline as a backdrop, was a serene way to end the day.

A Morning to Remember

Mornings at Hotel X are something special. Thanks to the convenience of the in-room Nespresso machine, I started my day with a perfect cup of coffee without leaving the comfort of my room. I spent time watching planes land at Billy Bishop Airport, marvelling at the Toronto skyline and the iconic CN Tower standing proudly against the horizon. The blend of urban energy and tranquil luxury was a perfect start to the day.

A Destination in Its Own Right

Hotel X is more than a hotel; it’s a luxurious retreat offering unparalleled amenities and experiences. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a business retreat, or a pet-friendly staycation, this hotel combines convenience, elegance, and worldclass hospitality. For me, it was a stay that left a lasting impression and a longing to return.

RESTAURANT HOSTING Event Trend:

The way we celebrate life’s milestones is evolving. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, intimate wedding, or professional achievement, more people are moving away from traditional home-based gatherings and opting instead for stylish restaurant settings that offer ambiance, convenience, and a touch of luxury.

Recently, we helped a client host an intimate dinner for 30 guests at Quatrefoil, a Michelin Guide restaurant in Dundas, Ontario. The event showcased how restaurant hosting is a refined way to create a memorable experience.

WHY HOSTING AT A RESTAURANT IS THE PERFECT CHOICE

One of the biggest advantages of hosting an event at a restaurant is the ability to be fully present as a host. When entertaining at home, juggling kitchen duties, guest needs, and logistics can be overwhelming. A restaurant alleviates these concerns, as experienced staff handle everything seamlessly, from food preparation to service, so you can enjoy the company of your guests without distraction.

Beyond the logistical ease, a restaurant setting elevates an event in a way that home entertaining often cannot. The carefully curated ambiance, professional service, and expertly crafted menu ensure a flawless experience, where every detail is considered. It’s an effortless way to impress guests and provide them with an evening that feels indulgent and special.

DESIGNING AN UNFORGETTABLE ATMOSPHERE

For our event at Quatrefoil, we envisioned a “Springtime Chic” aesthetic – an elegant yet welcoming ambiance that set the tone for the evening. A long dining table acted as the heart of the evening, adorned with a dark linen tablecloth featuring delicate butterfly and floral patterns, reflecting the transition into spring. Tapered candles in glass hurricanes cast a soft, intimate glow, while botanical-inspired floral arrangements added natural beauty to the setting.

Each place setting featured a butterflyshaped name card, a small but meaningful detail that emphasized personalization and thoughtfulness. Tall candelabras were positioned throughout the room, adding dimension and warmth. The night was enhanced with a live acoustic performance by Chelsea McWilliams of The Redhill Valleys, providing a

sophisticated musical backdrop that complemented the atmosphere without overpowering conversation.

CULINARY EXCELLENCE

The defining feature of any restauranthosted event is, of course, the food. Choosing a trusted and well-loved restaurant ensures an exceptional culinary experience, with menus that highlight seasonal ingredients and precise execution. At Quatrefoil, the evening’s menu was carefully crafted to provide a multi-course journey of refined flavours and textures, with expert wine selections enhancing the experience.

Unlike home-hosted events, where timing and plating require significant effort from the host or caterer, restaurant service guarantees a seamless and polished dining experience. The rhythm of the meal is effortlessly maintained, allowing guests to savour each course at a comfortable pace while engaging in lively conversation.

PERSONALIZATION WITHOUT THE STRESS

A common misconception is that hosting at a restaurant means losing the personal touches that make an event unique. In reality, it offers ample opportunities for customization, without the logistical stress. From the tablescape to the music selection, curated menus and personalized place settings, there are countless ways to make the event feel intimate and thoughtfully designed.

This approach is particularly popular for intimate weddings, milestone celebrations, and corporate gatherings, where quality over quantity is prioritized. Instead of a large-scale banquet hall, hosts are opting for more refined, curated dining experiences that emphasize exceptional cuisine and meaningful connection. Additionally, restaurants often provide beverage programs with expert pairings, elevating the entire dining experience.

EMBRACING A NEW ERA OF HOSTING

At its core, hosting is about more than just gathering people together; it’s about creating experiences that are meaningful and memorable. Choosing a restaurant venue is not just about ease; it’s about allowing yourself to be fully immersed in the moment, rather than preoccupied with the logistics. It transforms special occasions into elegant, seamless experiences where guests feel cared for, and hosts can truly enjoy the celebration.

The next time you're planning a significant event, consider stepping away from the kitchen and into an environment where you can savour the occasion without distraction. Whether it’s a dinner party for close friends or a milestone celebration, restaurant hosting ensures that the evening is as effortless as it is unforgettable.

TATIN BAKEHOUSE

A new Oakville patisserie is the pièce de résistance

Text & Photos by Rebecca Dumais
Tatin Bakehouse is the newest must-go-to for delicious pastries in Oakville. It’s tucked away in the industrial neighbourhood of Wyecroft Road, and offers both sweet and savoury baked goods and breads.

After moving to Canada from Boston, Massachusetts, chef and owner Lili Linda’s culinary background began with attending the Bonny Gordon College of Confectionary Arts in 2014. After moving to Oakville, she acquired a position at the Michelinstarred Hexagon in downtown Oakville as pastry chef. Her bestknown creation was a Southeast Asian-inspired pandan cake. “It was a very comforting dessert,” she says of the chiffon-style desserts, adding, “It’s very nostalgic for me.”

Linda met her business partner Sheila Wang while they were both working together at Hexagon. They officially opened Tatin Bakehouse late last December. The shop’s name, she says, has a dual meaning. In French, a tarte Tatin (tart tah-TAN) is a famous French “upside-down” caramelized apple tart, said to have been an accidental creation by sisters Caroline and Stéphanie Tatin in the 1880s. It also happens to be Linda’s daughter’s Indonesian name.

Linda was drawn to the world of French pastries for their technical and creative components. “I wouldn't say it's complicated, but it does get technical. I find I have a lot of room to play with flavour, and then, decoration.”

During the week there are standard menu items, which are pleasantly displayed on the counter. Weekends usually have more unique one-off specials such as petite gateau, using a creative mixture of ingredients made with whatever Linda may have on hand.

The beautifully created rendang shepherd’s pie is a clever combination of her Indonesian roots and French pastry making. The base of this signature pastry is a classic spelt flour pie shell, caramelized beef and spices and coconut milk, topped with piped mashed potato.

Linda takes experimentation seriously in order to come up with the unique and comforting flavours of the baked goods. “I'm not afraid of trying a different flavour,” she says. Other delicacies include curry puffs, fruit-laden croissants, and thickcrusted canelés.

As you’d expect, a bakery requires hours that aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Linda usually arrives at 3 a.m. every day, with the rest of the staff trickling in as the morning goes on. “I personally like it. I find I get more done when there's nobody around. Then I will have some extra time to kind of go over other things.”

We couldn’t leave without asking for a little bit of advice on mitigating the struggles of sourdough, which is also available, in addition to some wonderfully soft milk bread. “I can see why people give up,” she says, adding jokingly that her husband –who makes his own sourdough bread – says his is better than hers. “We're competing on that.”

But perhaps that’s another story…

BEAT BRINGING BACK THE

MY EXPERIENCE HOSTING THE ULTIMATE 90S DANCE MIX TOUR

Canadian TV Personality & Radio Host

The ’90s were a time of electric energy, unforgettable music, and nights spent dancing to beats that still make us move today. So when I was asked to host the 90s Dance Mix Tour Live in Concert, I knew I was in for something special. What I didn’t expect was just how magical it would feel to bring these legendary artists back on stage and experience the nostalgia in a way that transcended time.

Touring across British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in January, I had the absolute privilege of introducing artists like Fab Morvan from Milli Vanilli, 2 Unlimited, Haddaway, Turbo B from Snap!, and Daisy Dee from Technotronic to arenas filled with fans who never stopped loving their music. These are the songs that packed dance floors in the ’90s, and today, they still have that same electrifying energy.

A Nostalgic Revival

From the moment the tour kicked off, it was clear that this wasn’t just a concert series—it was a time machine. Fans showed up in full force, decked out in their best ’90s gear, ready to sing every lyric and dance to every beat. What struck me most was the pure joy in the crowd. People weren’t just remembering the ’90s; they were reliving them.

And the artists? Absolute pros. For some, like Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, it had been decades since their last Canadian performance. I was there when Milli Vanilli last played in Canada back in 1989 at the CNE Grandstand as part of the MTV Club

Tour with Downtown Julie Brown. To see Fab back on stage, embraced by thousands of fans singing along to every word, was a powerful moment. His story of resilience—rising from the infamous lipsyncing scandal to continue making music and spreading joy—reminded us all that setbacks don’t define us; how we push forward does.

Backstage

Camaraderie

One of the biggest surprises for me was how close I became with the artists. These were people I had danced to in clubs throughout the ’90s, and now here I was, not just introducing them on stage, but forming friendships. We bonded over our

shared love of music, and before I knew it, we were keeping in touch regularly— texting, DMing, and planning for the next leg of the tour. It’s surreal to think that the artists who soundtracked my younger years are now part of my life in such a meaningful way.

And let’s talk about the fans—wow. The energy they brought was unbelievable. Meeting them backstage, hearing their stories, seeing the excitement on their faces—it was a reminder of just how deeply this music has impacted people’s lives. The ’90s weren’t just a decade; they were an era of memories, of moments that shaped who we are.

The Sound of an Era

The ’90s were a defining time for music. Every genre had its moment—grunge, rock, hip-hop—but dance music, in particular, created an undeniable movement. Clubs were packed every weekend, with people ready to lose themselves to the infectious beats of Eurodance and high-energy club anthems. If a club was playing Snap!, 2 Unlimited, Haddaway, or Technotronic, you knew it was going to be a good night.

I was always a music lover—rock, dance, alternative, you name it—but grunge had a major influence on me. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Stone Temple Pilots were my go-to bands in the early ’90s. At the same time, I couldn’t resist the pull of the dance floor, whether it was in Toronto clubs or across the border in Niagara Falls, NY. Club Exit, anybody? Music was everything to me then, and that passion only grew when I joined MuchMusic in 1994. Working there was like living in the epicentre of music culture—I didn’t want to leave because I never wanted to miss a thing.

The ’90s Influence

Beyond the music, the ’90s shaped pop culture in so many ways. Fashion was bold and unapologetic—neon colours, cargo pants, oversized clothing. I embraced all of it. I still remember rocking bright neon shirts, baggy pants, wristbands, and sideways hats, feeling like I was at the heart of something exciting. The decade was about self-expression, about making statements through what we wore and how we carried ourselves.

Canada had its own thriving music scene at the time, too. MuchMusic gave us a front-row seat to it all. Rock bands like Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, The Tea Party, and The Watchmen were on fire, while dance artists like BKS, Love Inc, and Emjay were making their mark. The ’90s were a golden era for Canadian music, and it was an incredible time

When everything crashed back in 1990, I had to step back and reinvent myself. Early on, I couldn’t help but think—my brother, Rob Pilatus, my best friend, isn’t here. So as I go through this journey, I acknowledge him by doing what I do best. I’ve always had the passion, the energy, the hunger to be on stage, and I will never give up. I’m excited for this next chapter as an artist, with my own sound and my own vibe. I am patient—I’ll sprinkle my dust, paving my way with love. The Milli Vanilli seeds were planted in people’s consciousness, and while they lay dormant for years, they are blossoming again. Like flowers in springtime, they’re lighting up memories, bringing the music back to the forefront—and that makes me feel good.”

The Party’s Just Beginning

If this tour has proven anything, it’s that the love for ’90s music is as strong as ever. Watching thousands of people come together, singing and dancing to songs they grew up with, is a feeling I can’t quite put into words. And the best part? This is just the beginning. We’re bringing the 90s Dance Mix Tour to central and eastern Canada next, and I can’t wait to see the energy and excitement continue.

For me, hosting this tour has been a dream come true. It’s a chance to celebrate the decade that shaped me, reconnect with the music and artists I’ve always loved, and, most importantly, share it all with fans who feel the same way. The ’90s never really left us—they just needed a stage to shine on again. And trust me, they’re shining brighter than ever.

Leading Purpose with

A Conversation with Onome Ako; CEO of Action Against Hunger Canada, dedicated humanitarian leader, and advocate for gender equity and social change.

organizational goals; it’s about challenging societal norms and inspiring the next generation to see themselves in roles that can make a lasting impact.

In many communities, the mere presence of a woman leader can be transformative. Representation can spark possibilities for young people who have never considered leadership. It’s important to me to help dismantle barriers that have long held women and girls back and fuel their aspirations.

INSPIRATION & BEGINNINGS

QGrowing up in Nigeria, you’ve spoken about observing your parents’ acts of service. How did those experiences shape your passion for humanitarian work and your mission to empower others?

AMy parents' dedication to community service laid the foundation for my passion in humanitarian work, but other experiences certainly shaped my path.

In university, a friend from Niger shared that he was the only one in his family to receive an education; his sisters were all victims of early marriage. This, and countless similar stories, opened my eyes to systemic barriers, especially for women and girls. Years later, these barriers persist.

Tonight, 733 million people will go to bed hungry – the majority of which are women and girls. In many countries where Action Against Hunger works, women eat least and last. That’s why our work is about more than just food – it’s about breaking down the barriers that perpetuate hunger.

owning our potential, and not shying away from taking up space. In many ways, my approach to leadership has been shaped simply by being who I am and my values.

In 2023, only 47.9% of nonprofit board positions were held by women, and less than 1% of executive leaders in Canada were Black. The image people have of a CEO isn’t me, which is why I am passionate about showing the next generation – especially those who have felt “othered” – that climbing the profession ladder is possible.

The landscape of leadership completely shifted during that time, and I know I wasn’t the only leader who was grappling with how to authentically lead in a time that was so perilous and unpredictable.

For me, it was a return to my values. I adopted an “all-in-thistogether” approach. I had to quickly learn how to navigate leading a hybrid team and balance the need for stability with the agility required to adapt. As the organization’s spokesperson, I reached out to stakeholders. I picked up the phone and asked them how they were doing without any pretense or agenda—I wanted to connect because we were all experiencing COVID together.

These experiences tested my resilience and adaptability, reinforcing that leadership isn’t about having all the answers but about showing up consistently, leading with integrity, and making space for others to contribute meaningfully.

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS

QWith your impressive contributions to humanitarian work, what legacy do you hope to leave behind, and what excites you most about the future of social change?

AI want my legacy to be one of collective action because real change happens when we come together. Throughout my journey, I’ve stood alongside incredible leaders who have supported me.

I channel this into storytelling, too. In 2024, I published [the children’s book] I Am Cherished, inspired by my experiences and my daughter’s. It’s about self-acceptance and inclusion, teaching children to embrace their identities and reminding professionals of the power of true diversity.

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

QYou’ve emphasized the importance of authenticity in leadership. Can you share an example where leading authentically helped you navigate a significant challenge or achieve a breakthrough?

AOneof the most defining moments of authentic leadership came during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I am excited to keep lifting others as I climb and I hope my work inspires more to step forward, take up space, and lead with confidence. Equity and inclusion in leadership aren’t just ideals, they are necessities for shaping a better future.

Celebrating WOMEN

& Supporting

Local Business

on International Women's Day

Every year on March 8, we get the perfect excuse to shout from the rooftops about how incredible women are—although, let’s be honest, we should be doing that every day.

International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women everywhere, and here in our community. We have so much to be proud of—especially when it comes to the many amazing female-owned businesses that make our communities more vibrant, creative, and successful.

On International Women’s Day, let’s not only celebrate but also take action—grab a treat from a woman-owned bakery, book a service with a female entrepreneur, or simply spread the word about the incredible businesses right in our backyard.

Angela Ysseldyk, co-owner of Dutchman's Gold, is a secondgeneration entrepreneur with 25 years of experience as a Certified Nutritional Practitioner.

Ysseldyk grew up in a family of beekeepers – her father, John Van Alten, founded Dutchman’s Gold. Leadership was learned early, and she says it’s about “knowing when to take charge and when to listen, and having the courage to make decisions, even when they’re imperfect.

“As a second-generation entrepreneur, I feel both the responsibility and privilege of building on my parents' legacy – making their ceiling my floor while staying true to our core values. I surround myself with people who know more than I do but also recognize when my voice adds value.”

Through her nutrition and wellness career, she realized how much her roots mattered. “When my husband and I took over Dutchman’s Gold, I saw it wasn’t just a business — it was a mission that aligned with my passions and experience.”

After 44 years, Dutchman’s Gold has grown and evolved into the digital future without losing connection to its heritage and core values. “We’ve come a long way – and yet somehow, it feels like we’re just getting started.”

Michelle Kalman

Founder of the go-to

Burlington-born and Carlisle-raised, Michelle runs a boutique public relations agency based out of Mississauga’s Lorne Park neighbourhood. Her work supports many women-owned, local, entrepreneurial brands including The Bare Home and foli.

Kalman was always a fan of Citytv’s FashionTelevision show. In fact, it fuelled her pursuit of media as a career. “While studying, I volunteered there as a tour guide and sent my resume in pizza boxes to every producer at the station. Lucky for me, someone appreciated the approach and took a chance hiring me.”

Kalman makes it a point to create her own personal work back schedule each morning, assigning herself deadlines and goals each day. “Of course, I don’t always check every box but it’s a great tool for managing expectations and prioritizing work as well as moments of self-care,” she says.

A piece of advice to her younger self would be emotional intelligence in the workplace. “Emotions are incredibly important – especially for those of us in a creative industry,” she says. “That said, I believe how we respond to emotions in a work setting is key. My advice would be to pause, breathe and evaluate in high-stress situations. Take a moment – it’s always worth it.”

Dr. Jackie Ang

Dr. Jackie Ang is a medical doctor turned group psychotherapist, wellness educator, yoga and meditation instructor.

As someone who’s always been fascinated by people, and deeply moved by healing, she sees life as concentric cycles of transformation: beautiful, messy, sacred, incredible – “and I wanted to be a part of that process,” she says.

While she felt privileged to participate in healing as a doctor, she realized one day what made her heart soar: “When illness and vulnerability opened into deeper self-connection, love and self-understanding. My work now as a group therapist, meditation guide and wellness educator is inspired by creating the conditions for that.”

Ang wants to see women in her industry source their self-worth beyond their personal or professional roles. She says women should experience their value far beyond how they care for others, or regardless of how grand the achievement. “Sure, let’s celebrate our external impacts, but if we could really feel our inherent goodness unrelated to all that, we would naturally prioritize tending to our inner worlds, and ourselves” and that the paradox is what results in a rested, nourished, aligned human. “What it creates in their communities is immeasurable.”

Joelle Cooling has been a fashionable force in Downtown Burlington for many years.

As the founder and former owner of Joelle’s, she has established a clear example of leadership. “A leader can inspire few or many people,” she says. “As an employer, a mother, and a business owner in a community, I recognized my responsibility to be a positive influence on several different levels.”

Having recently retired from ownership of Joelle’s, which she founded and owned for 28 years, Cooling concluded that she’d accomplished what she’d wanted with that platform. It was time to lead a new owner into the future. “After navigating the challenges of the global pandemic, I most definitely experienced burnout – and allowed myself to acknowledge it. While I mentally wanted to keep going, I physically needed a break.”

Shoppers will still find her working occasionally at Joelle’s by Ally, as well as Jeff’s Guyshop, which is run by Cooling’s husband Jeff. Their oldest son Jackson is being mentored to take over ownership. “I am thrilled to be able to mentor Ally (Joelle’s by Ally), Alex and Erica (ROAM) and Jackson (Jeff’s Guyshop) along with their teams. I want to be the liaison for community and philanthropy in order to move our leadership philosophy forward. I also want to inspire women to listen to their bodies and understand the physiological changes that occur.

So many women have called my ‘retirement’ brave – it might have been easier to just keep going, but I’m not sure what the result would have been. I now have a lot of things to be excited about.”

Oksana Latinovic

Aesthetic Practitioner and owner of Blossom Skin Boutique

Blossom Skin Boutique, a medical spa located in Lorne Park, Mississauga, offers a variety of non-surgical treatments, including Botox, dermal fillers, advanced facial rejuvenating procedures, and body contouring treatments.

After years in the nursing field, transitioning to medical aesthetics was the realization of a dream for Oksana.

“I faced long working hours and high stress while raising three children, and I found myself burned out,” she shares.

“It was during this challenging time that I realized I needed a change. My passion for the beauty industry had always been there, and when the opportunity arose to pursue my dream, I seized it. While it wasn't easy, I had a clear vision and the determination to make it a reality.

Embracing this change has been a rewarding journey, allowing me to follow my true passion.”

Maintaining a balance between personal and professional life can be challenging, but Oksana prioritizes it accordingly.

“While my work is a significant part of my life and I truly love what I do, I make it a priority to disconnect as soon as I leave the office. At home, I immerse myself in family responsibilities and personal activities, training my thoughts and emotions to remain separate from work. It can be tough at times, but I strive to maintain this balance to keep my mind healthy and ensure that both my professional and personal lives thrive.”

Emphasizing self-care and education is crucial for Oksana as she imparts these values to her children, preparing them for a better future. “I encourage them to trust their instincts, discover their strengths, and pursue their dreams. Finding a purpose gives them the strength to fight for what they believe in. I always remind them to dream big and believe in themselves.”

Two pivotal moments led her to combine music and health. “A lifelong classical guitarist, I chose pharmacy over music, vowing to return one day,” she says. “In 2018, a 15-foot fall while rock climbing left me facing the possibility of never playing guitar again. Then later, in the final stages of dementia, I witnessed my father’s response as I played guitar at his bedside. These wake-up calls shaped my path, driving me to help the corporate world harness the science-backed power of music to turn stress into resilience.”

She advises women as aspiring leaders to “be bold and not sell themselves short,” and, while self-doubt is natural, it’s lingering fear that holds people back. “Throughout my 30-year career – building a pharmaceutical consulting firm and now speaking on music’s health benefits in the corporate world – I’ve faced doubt. But every time I acted, I progressed or learned.”

Imparting advice to her younger self: follow your heart. “Every big change I made happened because I trusted it over doubt.”

As a Black woman navigating multiple industries, she has felt the need to work twice as hard. “The biggest challenge has been breaking through spaces that weren’t necessarily designed for people like me. Whether it’s the luxury home décor market, the art world, or even fashion, I’ve had to

Access has also been challenging. “I’ve overcome this by building strong, meaningful relationships with people who see my vision and support me. I nurture connections with those who uplift and inspire me, just as I do for them.”

Shar continuously learns through cultural interaction. “Conversations and experiences shape my perspective more than anything else.” Success, she says, isn’t about achievement. “It’s about showing up every day with
