Gordon Deppe of the Spoons at The Music Hall and Concert Theatre in Oshawa, 2018

ECHOES OF THE ’80s

GORD DEPPE & RICK CAMPANELLI RECONNECT

A nostalgic conversation becomes something more as I reconnect with Gord Deppe of the Spoons, one of Canada’s most iconic New Wave bands, on their journey from high school assemblies to international tours – and what comes next.

hen I sat down with Gord Deppe, the voice and creative force behind the Spoons, it felt like stepping back into the soundtrack of my youth. As a fan since the early 1980s, I’d grown up with “Nova Heart” and “Romantic Traffic” spinning through my headphones and blasting from car radios. But I didn’t expect Gord to mirror my excitement.

“This is a real pleasure for me,” he said when I met him. “You were a big part of my musical evolution. I grew up watching you on MuchMusic.”

It stopped me in my tracks. I had come to speak with a Canadian music legend, only to discover that my work had in some small way inspired his journey too. It wasn’t just an interview; it was a mutual homecoming.

We quickly found common ground. Growing up in neighbouring cities—Gord in Burlington, myself in Hamilton—we had both experienced that electric feeling of seeing local talent making it big. In the early ’80s, the Spoons were everywhere. If you turned on the radio, chances were you'd hear “Arias & Symphonies,” “Old Emotions” or “Nova Heart” within half an hour. It made us feel like southern Ontario was part of something global, something cool.

Before the Spoons became household names, they were a group of high school students discovering their musical chemistry at school assemblies.

“I played sax, Sandy [his thengirlfriend, Sandy Horne] played trumpet,” Gord recalls now.

“During a band trip, we found out we both played guitar. So we just started jamming.”

With no bass player, innovation kicked in. Gord encouraged Sandy, who would become the band’s iconic bassist and co-vocalist, to try playing the lower notes. “That’s really how it all evolved.”

Rooted in the suburbs of Burlington and Hamilton, the Spoons were creatively insulated from Toronto’s vibrant, trend-driven music scene. In hindsight, that turned out to be a gift. “We were in our own little bubble,” Gord says. “When we went to Toronto, we had no idea what was going on. We were just creating our own music, really influenced by what was coming out of England and what we heard on CFNY-FM—not the usual mainstream stuff.”

Even the band’s name came out of that laid-back suburban vibe. “It was over lunch, eating alphabet soup,” he laughs.

“Someone dropped a spoon into Sandy’s bowl and joked, ‘Spoons! That works.’ And it just stuck.”

When asked which song had the biggest impact, Gord doesn’t hesitate.

“‘Nova Heart.’ That track opened so many doors. It was the turning point.”

But his personal favourites lie with the deeper cuts: later songs that longtime fans know by heart, but casual listeners may have missed. “That’s where my heart is,” he says.

Throughout the conversation, one theme recurs: authenticity.

The Spoons never set out to chase radio play. “We just wanted to create something different,” Gord says. “And when I hear younger artists today pulling from the ’80s, it shows me the music still resonates.”

Their influence spans generations. While the original fan base continues to show up, Gord sees more and more young faces at shows – fans who weren’t even born when “Romantic Traffic” first aired. “Sometimes I tell the audience, ‘This isn’t just for you – it’s for us too.’ That connection? It’s everything.”

Of course, the ’80s weren’t just about the music. “There were jokes about the hair and makeup. It did feel like 10 years of Halloween!” Gord laughs. “But the production, the craftsmanship – it holds up. And Toronto’s music scene was electric. You could

nostalgia. In 2024, Gord Deppe toured as a member of A Flock of Seagulls, performing 17 shows in 19 days across England. This August, he’ll hit the road with these ’80s icons again for 20 dates across the U.S. Gord has been part of A Flock of Seagulls for eight years now and performs continuously with numerous shows a year. “People ask if I’d go back to the ’80s,” Gord says. “Honestly? No. I love what we’re doing now.”

The Spoons are currently working on new music. “Seven songs are already written,” he says. “And I honestly think it’s some of the

The Spoons worked with legends along the way, including producers like Daniel Lanois and John Punter. But one of the most iconic collaborations came with Nile Rodgers—the Spoons are still the only Canadian band that he has produced. “He didn’t know our songs,” Gord says, “but he saw something different in us.”

walk down Queen Street and hear ska at the Rivoli, punk at the Horseshoe, and reggae at the Bamboo Club. It was so vibrant.”

Sting and Nile Rodgers were in New York to see Culture Club, and Canadian New Wave band the Spoons were their opening act. Years later while backstage at a Duran Duran concert, Rodgers turned to Gord and said, “Culture Club was fine, but when the Spoons came on? You guys were the sh*t!” Gord still calls it one of the greatest compliments of his career. “It’s why I tell young artists: don’t try to be perfect. Just be different.”

That desire to stay fresh is why the band’s not resting on

best we’ve ever done. I’d rather be a band someone discovers and says, ‘These guys are cool— they sound kind of 80’s.’ That’s the dream.”

Talking to Gord Deppe isn’t just a nostalgic trip; it’s a rediscovery. It’s a reminder that while the past shaped us, it doesn’t define us. And for the Spoons, the best may still be yet to come.

HISTORY Modern

RENOVATING A HERITAGE PROPERTY

One of Oakville’s most prominent heritage homes, the 1837 James McDonald house on Front Street, recently underwent a significant renovation that included several modern additions. Remodelling homes like this requires more than just architectural skills; it requires a keen sensitivity to history and continuity, as project architects Gren Weis & Geoff Roche, and designer Michael Friend explain.

Photos by Alex Lukey
Our guiding principles were rooted in recognizing the property's historical value and reinterpreting it in a fresh way.

WHAT MADE THE RENOVATION OF 176 FRONT STREET A COMPELLING PROJECT FROM AN ARCHITECTURAL PERSPECTIVE?

Gren Weis: The owners had been long-time friends and clients, so there was a strong personal connection, but I was also drawn to the complexity of the project – a unique combination of heritage conservation, zoning challenges, and architectural sensitivity. The house is also one of the best-known heritage homes in Oakville, making it an especially meaningful opportunity to contribute to the town’s architectural legacy.

Geoff Roche: The home was simply charming. It had retained its refined symmetry and proportions from the 1800s, and sat on a wide magnificent lakefront property in Old Oakville. It was a very unique and special opportunity.

Michael Friend: I was born and raised in Oakville, and I’ve always admired the house – passing by it while walking or playing in the nearby park, imagining the history and stories it held. It has an undeniable heritage presence that’s rare. We wanted to not only honour that heritage but to highlight it.

WHAT WERE THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES BEHIND THE REDESIGN?

Gren Weis: The original home had a Saltbox and Georgian style –natural, understated, and simple. That simplicity was essential to preserve. Our design approach respected the home’s proportions and symmetry by adding to both sides in a balanced, “bookend” fashion. The additions were intentionally subtle so as not to overpower the original form or throw the composition off balance.

Geoff Roche: We envisioned highlighting the original white stucco heritage home by bookending it between contemporary masonry additions. The street façade would retain a sense of privacy and intrigue, while the back would get blown open by expansive glass, taking in the full majesty of the horizon between lake and sky.

Michael Friend: We felt a deep responsibility to respect the home’s historical significance. Today, when you pass by the house, it’s immediately clear what’s original and what’s new, but the two parts speak to each other seamlessly. The addition doesn’t feel pretentious;

Built by Platt Fine Homes

it feels purposeful. Our guiding principles were rooted in recognizing the property's historical value and reinterpreting it in a fresh way.

THE JAMES MCDONALD HOUSE IS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF OAKVILLE’S HERITAGE. HOW DID YOU APPROACH BALANCING PRESERVATION WITH CONTEMPORARY DESIGN?

Gren Weis: We didn’t want the new elements to compete with the original architecture. Instead, we designed the additions to rise from the ground almost as a platform – to frame and elevate the historical structure, rather than distract from it. The aim was to respect the heritage while quietly enhancing it.

Geoff Roche: It was important to differentiate between the old and new, while delicately balancing the material palette so the contemporary additions would be sympathetic. A sand-cast moulded brick with a limewashed appearance complements the white stucco of the heritage home, while glazing details transitioned between these two materials.

Michael Friend: We were intentional in making the contrast between old and new apparent, but harmonious. We restored key elements like the shutters and heritage windows, and even repurposed original siding as a wall treatment in an upstairs room. These touches ensured that the spirit of the original home remained intact.

WHAT ELEMENTS OF THE ORIGINAL 1837 STRUCTURE WERE MOST IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO RETAIN OR EMPHASIZE IN THE FINAL DESIGN?

Gren Weis: We were committed to retaining the original home’s inherent balance and simplicity. Those qualities are what give the structure its character. The

We hope this project demonstrates that contemporary architecture can enhance, rather than detract from, heritage environments when approached thoughtfully.

Geoff Roche: The general proportions inherent in the Georgian plan were sacrosanct, including the divided lite proportions and front entry door and sidelites. The windows, chimneys, shutters, and single-pane glazing with storms were important elements of the original home, along with the wood trim detailing.

Michael Friend: As for the interior design, we made deliberate choices to incorporate craftsman-style details that honour the home’s heritage character. These include walnut inlays in the stair treads, exposed butterfly joints in the kitchen island millwork, and the preservation of original lumber throughout the house.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING OR REWARDING CHALLENGES IN WORKING WITHIN A HERITAGE DISTRICT LIKE OLD OAKVILLE?

Gren Weis: Achieving success within the parameters of strict heritage and conservation guidelines was a rewarding challenge – navigating various limitations while still delivering a design that felt fresh, purposeful, and cohesive. That kind of constraint pushes creativity and results in more thoughtful architecture.

Geoff Roche: Working with the residents and the heritage community is often

challenging, as there is a general resistance to change. You need to present a compelling vision while maintaining respect for the existing. It was especially rewarding for the home to be so well received by the community upon completion.

Michael Friend: Given the home’s visibility and legacy, there were understandable concerns at the outset. But we’re proud to have earned the trust of those who may have doubted our approach. We hope this project demonstrates that contemporary architecture can enhance, rather than detract from, heritage environments when approached thoughtfully.

WERE THERE SPECIFIC MATERIALS, TECHNIQUES, OR DESIGN DETAILS USED TO SUBTLY LINK THE NEW AND OLD SECTIONS OF THE HOME?

Gren Weis: Absolutely. The architectural strategy was not to compete with the historic form, but to support and highlight it. For example, the use of brick in the new elements was intentional; it acted as a bridge between modern and traditional design, creating a visual and material fusion that connected the old and the new seamlessly.

Geoff Roche: [Where possible, we used] authentic materials, genuine to the

craftsmen who built the original home, including three-coat trowelled stucco on wire mesh, lead coated copper gutters, downspouts and flashings, authentic heritage brick, stone, and a cedar roof. The green roof on the contemporary additions provided a link back to the contextual raw beauty of the site.

Michael Friend: In the interior, we had to be thoughtful with materials and spatial strategies to enhance the sense of height and openness. In the “snug room,” for example, we lowered the fireplace mantel to make the room feel taller and cozier—it adds a quirky charm that fits the space.

COMMUNITY RESPONSE WAS PASSIONATE ON BOTH SIDES; HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THE IDEA THAT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE HAS A PLACE WITHIN HISTORIC CONTEXTS?

Gren Weis: Contemporary architecture absolutely has a place within historic settings, when done thoughtfully. It’s crucial that new additions don’t attempt to mimic the past but rather express the time in which they are built. Good contemporary design can highlight the beauty of historic architecture, and I believe that’s not only possible, but necessary.

Geoff Roche: The house had to be updated and modernized to meet the demands of contemporary living. The neighbourhood is not a museum; it is a vibrant contemporary community, rich in history. The architecture should reflect that. We should be truthful to our time and place in history, while respectful of our past achievements in order that they may be passed down to future generations.

Michael Friend: We believe that contemporary architecture absolutely has a place in historic settings – when it’s executed with care, respect, and sensitivity to the existing character. There’s tremendous value in using modern design to spotlight the beauty

FLOURISH THE FINISHING LANDSCAPING:

Gren Weis Design Studio brought in Aldershot Landscape Contractors as part of their consultant team, to complement their work on the house with a landscape design that would reflect both the home’s heritage character and its contemporary additions. Lead Landscape Architect Iain Souter described how his team accomplished this considerable feat.

“The project architecture [conceived by Gren’s team] was a creative combination of the heritage structure and the contemporary additions, and drove our design ethos in the same manner: to be sympathetic to the heritage structure and incorporate a contemporary element.

“The planting in front was strong and understated, to unify and blend the heritage structure into the new additions

on either end of the home, using a paving material choice of traditional flagstone for the walkways and steps, and granite cobblestone for the driveways. The clean lines of the stone walls reflect the new additions.

“Planting in the back garden was far looser, to play off the natural shoreline of Lake Ontario. Perennial planting in the back garden used large brushstrokes to achieve massing and impact. Additional planting was used for screening and privacy from the adjacent public park.

“Natural stone gave way to clean finished concrete to complement the architectural style. Strong lines were defined with the terrace paving and large stepping stones, while brick and stone garden walls melded traditional and contemporary.

A brick privacy wall with seating provides privacy and a terminus to the western garden. Heritage rockery stone walls were maintained and enhanced blending into the new landscape.

“Even though the back architecture is contemporary and clean in its nature, the garden had to give a sense of informality. The large main terrace was connected to more relaxed spaces using large stepping stones to soften the hardscape and reduce the visual impact of walkways and sitting areas. A fire pit sits on a bed of stepping stones overlooking Lake Ontario.

“Special attention was given to material choices. The most important element was uniformity and timelessness.”

After many years in the design-build industry, Georgian Design Build founder Gene Maida came to feel there had to be a better way. With the company’s “try-before-you-buy” service, he may have found it.

Georgian Design Build founder Gene Maida freely acknowledges that for many people, the process of building a new house or undertaking a major renovation is a complicated, nerve-wracking, even frightening business. There are so many variables and pain points where the whole thing can go off the rails. And even the best-managed projects rarely unfold without a few unplanned course corrections along the way.

Gene joined the custom home division of his family’s business, Georgian Communities, at a young age. Over time, he became keenly aware of the pitfalls of the process, even with experienced, reputable builders. The way he saw it, a lot of the most frequent drawbacks – inaccurate or incomplete drawings, unforeseen time delays in deliveries or construction, cost estimates that turned out to be worthless once the project was underway – were all preventable.

Above: Elevations, especially street-facing views, are crucial in modern homes today, says Maida. In this case, the client wanted a balance of traditional and updated elements, and chose details like an elegant columned front portico, slate mansard roof and limestone block facing, updated with large black metal-trimmed windows. Left: Kitchens often have the most detail in the planning stages, notes Mawby. Here, the star of the show is the generously proportioned island, with its striking marble surfacing, repeated in the backsplash in the cooking zone. At this stage, she notes, changes are a breeze, and decision-making is much less nerve-wracking.

way. He began to feel he had a moral as much as a professional obligation to figure out a way to make the home-building process smoother, better organized, and more financially predictable for his clients. That’s how, he says, Georgian Design Build's way of doing things was born.

The heart of Georgian’s method lies in the planning and design stage, a process that’s so intricate that once the actual construction begins, almost every contingency has been considered and delays and stoppages are rare. The process is so time- and cost-effective that it enables Georgian to offer a “try-beforeyou buy” service with a detailed design, timeline, and accurate costing, at no obligation.

The heart of Georgian’s method lies in the planning and design stage, a process that’s so intricate that once the actual construction begins, almost every contingency has been considered and delays and stoppages are rare.

The process starts with an initial programming meeting with Georgian’s principal designer Michelle Mawby. The meeting can last for ninety minutes or longer, where Mawby sits down with a client and interviews them extensively about their lifestyle, design preferences and dreams for their new home.

As a Registered Interior Designer, Mawby emphasizes that everything starts with great design, and Georgian is a design-first company. “Many companies claim that

who add the design later as an afterthought,” she says. She encourages clients to start gathering magazine clippings, Instagram photos or to create Pinterest boards of rooms or features they like, and makes suggestions for details like tile, hardware, architectural features and more. After taking measurements and conducting crucial background research into zoning, local services and other important variables, she later returns with several layout options and detailed sketches, allowing the client to visualize their new home for the first time.

“There’s still plenty of time at this stage to make adjustments,” Mawby says. “For most people, it’s much easier to picture what the house will be like once you have visual elements like this. And it’s no problem to make changes; they’re only sketches!” Once a preliminary plan is created, the first estimate is calculated, and adjustments may be made to timeline and budgeting, as required.

Crucially, says Mawby, the interior decoration is planned concurrently with the overall design program – not always the case with other builders. That means that later, while the build is in progress, ordering of fabrics and other interior elements is proceeding as well. If a chosen tile or fabric is unavailable, the company’s extensive supply

network is able to substitute similar or suitable options immediately, reducing or eliminating delays.

Over the next few weeks, the design becomes progressively more detailed: sketches become highresolution renderings, almost indistinguishable from photographs of the final result. Once all the details are in place, the plan is sent out for tender and to the various trades for detailed estimates.

Finally, a firm price – taking into account every component, from the superstructure right down to the drawer pulls in the powder room – is ready for presentation to the client. A realistic timeline is drawn up, and the project, should the client wish to accept, is ready to go.

“The whole house-building process can be very scary, and there are a lot of unknowns,” says Mawby. “That’s why

HOW A GEORGIAN HOME STAKES SHAPE

The owners of the handsome Oakville-area home whose renderings are shown here had actually purchased their property and demolished the former house on the site some five years before they approached Georgian to build their new house. They had already been through several architecture/ design firms and were deeply discouraged by the process to date. But they decided to try Georgian’s unique try-before-you-buy system, and were pleasantly surprised.

“Given the lot size, zoning and other parameters, we sat down with them and were able to give them some visual ideas that they could work with and choose options from with ease,” recalls Georgian principal designer Michelle Mawby. “After five years of frustration, they had a path forward and were able to breathe a sigh of relief, and they were able to go ahead with us.”

The fluted sides of the freestanding tub echo the cabinetry detailing, while the wood elements in the room repeat the lightly stained oak of the kitchen, tying the whole house together beautifully.

Calling

Inside a Southampton Retreat by Lynne James by Design
For many, Southampton is more than a dot on a map; it’s a state of mind. It’s a place where time slows down, Lake Huron sparkles on the horizon, and the sunsets glow with an almost surreal warmth.

For designer Lynne James, founder of Lynne James by Design, this charming beach town has long held a special place in her heart. It was here, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from her Oakville home, that she found her own family retreat, and where she’s helped others discover their own piece of paradise.

One recent project, nestled just steps from the shore, captures the essence of what draws people to Southampton. “Lake Huron, with its beautiful white sand beaches and magnificent sunsets, inspired so many elements of this home,” Lynne says. “The client specifically asked for the exterior colour to reflect the deep bluegreen hue of the lake in winter, and that’s where Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Teal came in. It’s moody, elegant, and entirely rooted in the landscape.”

A similar sense of harmony with nature continues inside. The kitchen, which was designed to take full advantage of the lake views, is painted in Rusty Nail, a deep, fiery orange-red reminiscent of fall sunsets sinking below the waterline. In the principal bedroom, a wide picture window perfectly frames the iconic Chantry Island lighthouse; the trim, finished in North Sea Green, makes for a subtle echo of the surrounding environment.

“It was really important that this home reflect not only its location, but also the life and memories the clients were bringing with them,” says Lynne. “We spent a lot of time at the beginning understanding how they wanted the home to function, and how it would feel when their family gathered there. From that foundation, we layered in form and finish.”

The construction of the home was led by builder Elsian Hoxha of Shore Bound Contracting, a frequent collaborator of Lynne’s. Having first worked in Southampton in 2018, Elsian has developed a deep appreciation for the town and its surroundings. “My wife and I love the area,” he says. “I’ve done more and more work here over the past few years.”

Elsian and his team have worked with Lynne on a number of projects, including full home and exterior renovations, decks, and additions. “Working with Lynne always means thoughtful design and a clear vision,” he says.

In Southampton, the sandy soil and high water table can present challenges during renovations, often requiring reinforced footings and structural levelling before any design work begins. Seasonal weather is also a factor, with heavy snow and road closures demanding careful planning. For this build, Elsian prioritized premium materials and energy-efficient upgrades—from highperformance windows to above-code insulation—to ensure the home is as durable as it is beautiful.

Outdoor Concepts, the landscaping firm brought in for the project, was tasked with designing an outdoor living space that felt as timeless and welcoming as the home itself. “Our goal was to complement the classic Southampton craftsman-meets-cottage feel, and to draw people outside,” says the team. “The gardens are designed for year-round interest: different bloom times, evergreen structure, and softness to balance the stone and concrete.

One particularly meaningful detail was the labyrinth. It was a unique challenge for the landscaping team, but one that added a deeply personal touch to the space. Drawing from various chapters of the client's life, the outdoor design integrated subtle nods to past homes and cherished memories, creating a retreat that feels

For Lynne, this kind of personal storytelling is at the heart of every project. Since purchasing her own cottage in Southampton in 2017, she’s watched friends and clients from Oakville fall in love with the area’s charm and serenity. “We’ve had eight families purchase homes here after visiting. We’ve built three custom homes for them and renovated the rest. The appeal is easy to understand. Southampton offers a relaxed, coastal lifestyle, yet it’s still within reach of the city. It feels like an escape without the hassle.”

The duality of her work, transitioning between urban sophistication in Oakville and laid-back luxury in Southampton, keeps her inspired. “The common thread is lifestyle. My Oakville clients want elegant, functional homes close to the GTA. My Southampton clients crave

And the colour palette reflected the horizon itself, with cool greys and blues punctuated with vibrant pops.”
“It was really important that this home reflect not only its location, but also the life and memories the clients were bringing with them.”

something softer, a retreat that echoes the lake and the sand. But both want spaces that truly reflect them.”

Renovations, she admits, often come with unexpected challenges, especially when updating older homes to meet current building codes. But for Lynne and her team, it’s all part of the creative process. “Surprises are just part of the journey,” she says with a smile. “Our job is to turn those into opportunities.”

Whether building from the ground up or breathing new life into existing structures, the goal remains the same: to create homes that

are both beautiful and deeply personal. “The most important thing we do is listen. We bring our clients’ vision to life and, ideally, go beyond what they imagined. When they step into their home and feel like it was made just for them, that’s the real reward.”

Backdropped by the calm waters of Lake Huron and surrounded by the small-town charm of Southampton, this project is more than a summer house. It’s a place where sunsets are watched, gardens are explored, and memories are made. It’s a true testament to the power of thoughtful design, and to the enduring magic of the coast.

Water Life by the

The cottage is a place where you can kick off your shoes and relax. Here’s how the right décor can help put you in a cottage mood.
By Jackie Glass

MEET THE DESIGNER

Designing cottages for our clients has always been fun. Maybe it’s because the cottage is a place where people unwind, relax and refresh. Helping to create an atmosphere that speaks to that aesthetic has always gotten my creative juices flowing.

Our most recent project in northern Ontario was a great testament to that. During the pandemic, one of our clients reached out to us and asked us to oversee their cottage project. They had torn down the original cottage and were building a beautiful home on the water. What was exciting – and at times, challenging – was to select every design decision via Zoom call or video conference. But we did it, right down to the art on the walls!

I consider it one of the most satisfying projects we ever did, because we overcame so many challenges during that strange period. And in the end, our clients were finally able to spend precious life at their cottage during one of the most unsettling times in our history.

So what makes a great lakehouse? I don't think size matters, but rather the subconscious vibe that lakehouse living evokes. It’s about blending style, comfort and function. You should be able to arrive at the beginning of the weekend, kick off your shoes, grab a drink, have a refreshing dip in the lake – and keep doing that all weekend long.

A thoughtfully designed lakehouse becomes a gathering place for family and a personal retreat, in a natural setting. Lakeside living also creates so many wonderful memories.

So what makes a great

lakehouse?

I don't think size matters, but rather the subconscious vibe that lakehouse living evokes. It’s about blending style, comfort and function.

What is Lake Style?

Lake style is a combination of relaxed comfort mixed with a good dose of nature. I like to keep the colour palette fairly neutral and then add in elements like natural stones and woods. Pretty blue and green colour palettes suggest water. While not strictly nautical, a lakehouse design tends to be more rustic in style.

Drawing inspiration from the outdoors is important, since windows, especially picture windows, create a symbiotic relationship between the indoors and outside. Large patio doors and simple window treatments ensure maximum light while still allowing for privacy.

I always start in the living room, to create a strong foundation. This is where I add architectural details, making it the perfect canvas for establishing the overall vibe. Then I add artwork, textiles and natural textures.

Invest in Performance Materials

Style is important, but practicality is critical at a lakehouse. Look for fabrics that are washable, durable and comfortable, and materials that can weather and age gracefully.

Make sure furniture is lightweight in the living room. This allows for easy additions like chairs and ottomans, when the party gets bigger and you need to move things around.

If you regularly host friends and family, make sure everyone has a place to sit. Be thoughtful and practical about how many seats you will optimally need. Consider a sectional – they’re great for squeezing in a few more seats!

Art choices should reflect your personal connection to the space. An example would be a framed map of the area. I also love to use thrifted treasures, as well as mixing in a few new pieces. That blend of new and used works perfectly in weekend homes.

Look for opportunities to incorporate multi-functional built-ins. Use shelves and closed cabinetry for display, and to hide things like board games and extra linens.

Add additional shelves in the kitchen. Lake living means everyone should be able to help themselves; making stemware and dishes easily visible means everyone

helps to keep things organized, and it makes things easier on the host.

Be inspired by the nature around you. Consider painting a ceiling a soft blue for a pop of colour; alternatives could be to paint a few of the cabinets, or all the interior doors. Use your imagination to inspire your own curated space.

Keep your dining room table spacious if you can. A weekend getaway place is often a place where we invite friends and family, so think about being able to "grow" the table with leaves.

I love a nice spa bathroom. This could be achieved simply with white towels, white walls, white tiles and cabinetry. People feel calmer in softly inspired spaces. (And paint works miracles in any room.)

Nothing says lake living more than shiplap. Use it on a single wall or on a ceiling. This is such a gorgeous detail that just always works.

Consider adding a screened porch. Yes, bugs are a problem in the wild, so a place where you can relax without being bitten is a good investment. Retractable screens are a good option here, too – and of course, a good bug spray or fan.

Add bunk beds – nothing adds more sleeping space than bunk beds. We have often designed double, queen or king built-in bunks for clients who need to maximize sleeping arrangements when adding extra guests.

5 Lakehouse Decor Elements that reflect your surroundings

1

Weathered finishes: anything that looks old or gently worn

2

Rattan: This casual material mixes well with upholstered pieces and adds texture. Think of big baskets, chairs, or other ancillary pieces.

3

Wool blankets: Nights can be chilly, even in summer; use seasonal patterns and colours and drape over furniture pieces for warmth.

4

Seasonal accents: I love to forage for branches or flowers; these instantly add a seasonal feel and freshness.

5

Anything vintage: Old skis, a weathered oil painting… homes mixed with new and old pieces create special feelings.

Layered Living, Personalized Design

Timeless taste, customizable comfort, and a showroom that sparks inspiration.

What’s one of your favourite recent projects, and what made it memorable?

Our most recent project—The Bridgewater Project—was a dream. We had the rare opportunity to start with a completely blank canvas, which let our creativity really shine. From day one, the vision was to create a space that felt fresh, light-filled, sophisticated, and welcoming.

We were involved in every detail—from colour palettes to layout—bringing it all together in a way that felt natural and

choose from, based on a single piece they fell in love with. That kind of inspiration-first design makes the whole process more meaningful.

What’s a timeless design choice you always stand by?

Traditional style is our go-to classic. There’s a reason it never fades—it brings a sense of structure, balance, and elegance that always feels right. Whether it’s a beautifully crafted wood piece or a timeless armchair silhouette, traditional design

in traditional elements to add warmth and richness. It’s often the first building block, and from there, you can introduce other styles to create a unique, layered look.

Do you have any bestsellers or customer favourites you’d recommend right now?

Our designers each have their favourites, but there are a few standouts that our clients are loving right now. We love items that are completely customizable to the client’s personality and needs, and our customizable swivel chair

is a perfect example—super versatile, stylish, and ideal for both classic and modern spaces.

Our oversized cocktail table (now available in white!) is another bestseller. It’s elegant, functional, and offers great storage with traditional styling and casters.

And of course, our customizable sectional continues to be a client favourite. It’s endlessly adaptable to different rooms, lifestyles, and tastes.

Rooted in Design, Built for Life

Canadian craftsmanship, expert guidance, and a pressure-free shopping experience

Can you tell us a bit about your design services and what sets you apart?

Several things make Joshua Creek unique. Our team includes professional interior decorators and designers who offer personalized guidance— whether it’s space planning, finish selection, or layout. Beyond that, our entire team works closely together. We’re small, collaborative, and that team spirit is felt the moment someone walks through the door. There’s no pressure, just genuine support. We also offer in-home visits to ensure furniture will fit through tight spaces like staircases and narrow hallways.

What’s a recent project that stands out?

We’ve had the exciting opportunity to design and furnish multiple spaces for the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre. That

includes the locker rooms, team lounges, barber shop, suites, and clubs. It’s been incredible to be part of that transformation. The Jays have really elevated their space— and we’re proud to have played a role in that. Go Jays!

What design trends are you loving right now?

We’re loving the return of warm, rich wood tones, bold curves, and lots of texture. These elements make a space feel cozy and layered. Another trend we’re seeing— and loving—is the growing demand for Canadian-made, handcrafted pieces. That’s exactly what we specialize in. Whether it’s solid wood, custom upholstery, or

leatherwork, our pieces are built to last and built to reflect you.

How do you curate the pieces in your store?

Our team hand-selects every piece—and in many cases, we design them ourselves. The focus is always on three things: design, durability, and local craftsmanship. When clients walk through the showroom, they’re not seeing mass-produced furniture—they’re seeing pieces with heart, soul, and longevity. We always recommend stopping by in person to really experience the quality for yourself.

ANDERSONS INTERIORS:

Crafting Comfort with Character

Custom Canadian-made furnishings, timeless spaces, and advice you can trust.

How would you describe your design style or philosophy?

We like to think of ourselves as trusted advisors. It’s not about giving clients what they think they want—it's about giving them what they deserve. Quality is non-negotiable. Our clients value their homes, and we make sure every piece is personal and intentional. No two projects are the same, because no two clients are.

What sets your work apart?

Customization is key. Whether it's size, style, or colour, we make sure every piece fits the home and the people living in it. No cookie-cutter looks. Everything is Canadian

or North American-made, so you’re getting top-quality craftsmanship. And we stay involved from start to finish. That personal investment matters.

Tell us about a recent project that stood out. We actually remember almost every job—even if it was just one chair we helped with years ago. But one that stands out is a Burlington couple who were living overseas. They trusted us to design their home while they were away. When they walked in and saw it all finished… the look on their faces said it all.

“Every detail should feel like it was made just for you— because it was.”

What advice would you give to someone designing their home?

Finish one room before moving on to the next. It’s tempting to start everything at once, but it rarely works. And avoid chasing trends. Your home should reflect you. We always ask, “Do you want your space magazine ready or sanctuary ready?”

What kinds of products do you offer?

We carry a wide range of customizable furnishings— sofas, chairs, dining tables, beds, rugs—all made in Canada. Every piece is designed with scale, comfort, and personal style in mind. We don’t believe in making a generic piece fit. We find the right piece.

AndersonsInteriors.ca

Design with Depth, Spaces with Soul

Evolving interiors, tailored experiences, and a focus on timeless livability.

How would you describe your design philosophy?

Our approach is rooted in creating meaningful spaces that reflect the people who live in them. Every project— regardless of size or style— receives the same thoughtful

care and attention. Whether the look leans modern, traditional, or somewhere in between, we don’t aim to define a client’s style. Instead, we support and evolve it. The result is always personal, intentional, and deeply livable.

“We don’t aim to define a client’s style—only to support and evolve it.”

What’s a recent project that stands out?

We’ve recently seen several long-term projects come to life—new builds that were years in the making. From the earliest planning stages to final styling, there’s something magical about seeing it all come together. But it’s the reveal that never gets old. Watching a client walk through their finished home for the first time—with genuine joy and emotion—is the most rewarding moment of all. That trust and excitement fuels everything we do.

What’s one simple way to instantly elevate a space?

Art. It has the power to shift a space completely—adding energy, emotion, and personality. Whether it’s a dramatic

statement piece or a quiet, calming presence, art sets the tone and helps tie a room together. Best of all, it’s a reflection of you. With so many styles and options available, art is one of the most accessible and expressive design elements out there.

Is there a design “rule” you love to break?

We believe in strong design principles—but rigid rules don’t define luxury. Some of the most beautiful spaces come from layering styles, breaking conventions, and leaning into the unexpected. Great design should feel curated and effortless, not formulaic. A home should reflect your story, not someone else’s playbook.

verlooking the shores of Lake Ontario, this Oakville home had great bones—an open layout, expansive windows, and a beautiful patio—but needed a fresh, modern update.

“Our client wanted a space that felt fresh, functional, and welcoming for both social gatherings and quiet family moments,” says Muhtar Ahmed, Lead Designer at Scan Décor Burlington. “Having worked with this homeowner before, I knew how to strike the right balance between beauty and practicality.”

The team redesigned the layout, introducing a clean and minimal aesthetic grounded in earthy tones and soft blues. Accents of ochre, dark brass, and bronze add warmth and depth. Italian and Mid-Century Modern furnishings anchor the design, complemented by curated décor, canvas art, and metal wall pieces.

The dining room’s centrepiece is an Italian marble-topped table with a sculptural pedestal base—visible from the entry—paired with Scandinavian armchairs and a sleek LED chandelier.

In the family room, a modular sectional with motion and storage elements floats effortlessly in the space, preserving flow and openness. The serene neutral palette enhances the tranquil feel.

A year after devastating wildfires, the spectacular star of the Canadian Rockies is rebounding.

Like most traffic jams, when vehicles get backed up in Jasper National Park, Alberta, expect horns.

But they’re not the kind you think. Wildlife has the right of way in the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, and these horns are on photogenic groups of bighorn sheep. But with the splendour of the snow-capped Canadian Rockies all around, who could be in a hurry?

“This is their road,” our SunDog Tours bus driver explained, as we stopped for a half-dozen ewes a few minutes from the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. They come to lick the minerals in the dust kicked up by passing cars and often stick around to graze.

Abundant wildlife, turquoise-coloured glacier-fed lakes, steep canyons and panorama views of white-topped 3,000-metre peaks bring more than two million visitors to this pristine area of Alberta every year. Known for adventure, Jasper is also a peaceful place, and the world's secondlargest Dark Sky Preserve.

The summer-season return to Jasper has special meaning for locals, as the area marks a year since last July’s devastating wildfires. Sparked by lightning strikes, about 32,000 hectares of the park burned – and the fire damage to areas including Maligne Canyon is heartbreaking to see.

More than 20,000 people were evacuated as the fire rapidly spread. That included the mountain town of Jasper, where about a third of homes and businesses in the townsite were destroyed.

Recovery is well underway as Jasper heals. In fact, the park opened to visitors last September, and nowadays much of the town is open and welcoming guests. Because Jasper is a tourist-based economy, it is delivering a heartfelt message to visitors to come back.

That includes the historic Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, which has been bringing royalty, movie stars and guests from around the world to the heart of the park since 1922. Log cabin-inspired buildings of various sizes give the property a unique rustic-elegant sensibility. This is getting away from it all in deluxe, Canadian wilderness style. Staff say families have been returning here for generations.

There was wildfire damage to some areas of the 700-acre lodge property. The forest around the heritage golf course is charred, although the course itself was saved. Signature cabin Milligan Manor and one of the Beaver Suites were lost, along with several hotel operations buildings.

Still, the JPL reopened last October and, like the town, is looking to the

The biggest undertaking is the remodelling of the Great Hall, the main hub for guests. While the renovations are underway, the golf clubhouse will take over as lodge reception from November until next spring.

What would a mountain resort be without a gathering spot? The magnificent Great Hall acts as a natural place for JPL guests to unwind and connect, with the Emerald Lounge and Great Hall gastropub on either side of a

massive stone fireplace. The hall overlooks the Churchill Range mountains across glacier-fed Lac Beauvert – “beautiful green” in French. There’s also an outdoor terrace. And the outdoor swimming pool has the same spectacular view.

I started my JPL morning with a candlelit yoga class, followed by a peaceful walk along the shores of Lac Beauvert. The path took me past the boathouse, where guests can unwind in a lakeside barrel sauna and rent canoes and stand-up paddleboards. I made a mental note to spend some time in the indoor sauna and steam room after a post-breakfast swim. I also signed up for a free historic tour of the property.

Bikes are available, or you can see the scenery on horseback in a guided trail ride. Golfers get their fix, too. The resort celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Thompson-designed 18-hole golf course in July.

I ended my day as I started, with a gentle walk towards Lake Mildred, about 10 minutes from my room. An aurora alert app on my phone said there was a good chance to see the northern lights. But would they appear? The snow on Pyramid Mountain was pale in the moonlight, beneath a star-filled sky. Stargazing is helped by the lighting on the property, where low-wattage streetlights shine downwards to minimize light spill.

As I stood on the shore, I caught a faint green flicker in the sky, proof that magic things can happen in this special place in the Canadian Rockies.

A Time For Recovery

Restaurant and whisky distillery The Maligne Range opened in the town’s former movie theatre this year. The Jasper Brewing Co., which had some smoke and water damage, is reopening.

Wild Wildlife

I saw elk, mule deer and lots of bighorn sheep on my Wildlife of Jasper and the Ecology of Fire tour run by SunDog Tours. Driver and guide Yvonne Hannah is an expert on the park and its animal residents. We got a good look at the massive, curling horns on a half-dozen male bighorn sheep –Hannah had some teaching tools in the van. We hefted a bighorn sheep skull to feel the 10-kg weight of its horns, as she pointed out the ridges created by the enormous force of colliding territorial males, fighting during the fall rut.

Ewes hang out separately from males. We were captivated by an adorable bighorn lamb that was grazing with a group of ewes in front of a fantastic mountain backdrop. The little guy was only a few months old.

We also saw elk and big-eared mule deer. At different times of year, Hannah told us, people will spot black and grizzly bears as well as moose on her tours.

She also explained the role wildfires have in forest regeneration as we drove up the winding road into Maligne Canyon.

Murals

Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Matricia Bauer does fireside chats for Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge guests and leads a variety of tours, including a new experience in town to learn about murals by Indigenous creators. The tour includes works by her daughter, Calgary-based artist Mackenzie Brown. Like her mother, she is also a drummer, singer and storyteller.

Getting There

Jasper National Park is less than a four-hour drive from Edmonton. The more picturesque route is from Calgary, which includes the Icefields Parkway. SunDog Tours runs bus service from either airport, which takes a bit longer than self-drive.

Come visit a resort that offers the best of both worlds: timeless Muskoka character with a touch of contemporary grace.

onto the grounds of the Sherwood Inn, you arrive in a fragrant forest: you’re instantly enveloped by the rich, grounding aromas of sweetgrass, pine, maple, cedar, and soft florals. Nature offers its own warm welcome.

This earthy elegance is perfectly complemented by the traditional charm of early Muskoka architecture, where rustic heritage meets understated refinement. At Sherwood Inn, you truly experience the best of both worlds: timeless Muskoka character with a touch of contemporary grace set on the shore of Lake Joseph, one of Muskoka’s “Big Three” lakes. It’s luxury in perfect harmony with nature.

and prominent member of Toronto’s upper society, envisioned a retreat of distinction and charm. Draper’s goal was to create an inn of exceptional quality, inspired by the elegance and comfort of a prosperous New England estate.

But more than luxury, the Drapers dreamed of something deeply personal – a place where guests would feel not like travellers at a hotel, but like friends visiting a cherished cottage. Since 2012, ClubLink has managed the Inn, continuing to uphold that spirit of warmth and familiarity, and it remains the cornerstone of the Sherwood Inn experience today.

Just as it was in the 1940s, a stay at Sherwood Inn is leisurely and relaxed, yet

a quiet morning walk along tree-lined nature trails, a refreshing afternoon swim in the clear lake waters, or simply basking on the soft, sandy beach with a good book and a gentle breeze. For tennis enthusiasts, the newly finished courts (perfectly positioned for prime lake views) await. With fewer rooms and cottages than many large resorts, Sherwood Inn offers an intimate, boutique ambiance, ideal for those seeking a quieter, crowdfree escape. Its private beach, dock, and peaceful setting make it a favourite for romantic getaways and tranquil retreats.

Culinary excellence is a hallmark of the Sherwood Inn, thanks to Chef Jose, who has elevated the Inn’s already renowned dining experience. Vintages

Restaurant, known for its locally inspired upscale cuisine and impressive wine list, has become a true culinary destination in Muskoka. Seasonal, locally sourced ingredients are at the heart of every dish.

A highlight of the evening during our stay was the Georgian Bay pickerel, expertly pan-seared with a provincial crisp, served with cauliflower brown rice and a vibrant fresh tomato salsa that added brightness and colour to the plate. My guest opted for the visually stunning vegetarian entrée: a baked, tempeh-stuffed red pepper filled with organic red quinoa and drizzled with a silky vegan cashew cream sauce. Tender green peas, vibrant market vegetables, and a delicate basil chili oil brought the dish together with perfect balance and flair.

A new addition to the property is Within Spa, owned by Jackie Gronfors. This

thoughtfully curated wellness space offers an array of treatments, including a Customized Signature Tranquility Within Facial using exclusively Dermalogica products. I indulged in the Happy Sole Foot Ritual – the ideal way to unwind after a scenic walk along the manicured forest trails. Guests are invited to explore both lakeside paths and tranquil forested areas, surrounded by towering pines and the calming hush of nature.

Unlike many family-focused resorts, Sherwood Inn is tailored to couples and adults, making it a top choice for honeymoons, anniversaries, and serene escapes. It’s also a favoured venue for weddings and corporate retreats, thanks to its picturesque setting and high-end hospitality.

Our next chapter at Sherwood Inn will be a winter visit, an experience said to be

postcard-perfect. Cozy fireside moments, snowy trails, and the magic of Muskoka under a blanket of snow are all part of the Inn’s year-round appeal.

While Muskoka is famed for its summer and fall splendour, Sherwood Inn remains open throughout the year, offering crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, and the full charm of a winter wonderland.

Sherwood Inn blends historic elegance, lakefront luxury, adult-focused tranquility, and fine dining, all set in the heart of Muskoka’s iconic landscape. It continues to be beloved by those seeking a quiet, romantic, and timeless Muskoka experience.

See you in December!

South Beach Escape to

(NO PASSPORT REQUIRED!)

Lake Huron’s newest boutique stay invites guests to unwind in colour, comfort, and style – just steps from the sand.

Last weekend, Sue and I traded our city shoes for flip-flops and headed west, to discover a little slice of paradise along the shores of Lake Huron tucked in the heart of Southampton, Ontario (affectionately dubbed the “Hamptons North”). We checked into the newly reimagined South Beach Motel, a boutique property that effortlessly blends bold Miami vibes with laid-back Canadian charm.

From the moment we arrived, the motel felt like a breath of fresh, beach-scented air. The 12-suite property, which officially opened its doors in April, is the sister to the well-loved Beach Motel down the road, and together, these two spots have transformed Southampton into a must-visit destination for weekenders, families, and design lovers alike.

The South Beach Motel is nothing short of photogenic, thanks to its collaboration with Toronto design studio Twenty-Two Twelve (yes, the same creative minds behind Hotel Julie on CTV’s “Staying Inn”). The design leans into retro charm and playful palettes without ever sacrificing function. It’s stylish, spirited, and exactly the kind of place

where you want to unpack and stay a while. \What sets this property apart is its thoughtful layout and guest-first amenities. Our suite was spacious, outfitted with a private kitchenette – ideal for longer stays – and splashed with cheery colours and clever design details. The courtyard out back invites you to slow down and soak it all in, complete with fire pits, BBQs, a bar area, and a games zone where we found ourselves laughing over a round of cornhole.

One of our favourite features? The dedicated wellness space, a cozy corner for rejuvenation that includes a sauna, cold plunge, and lounge area perfect for post-beach unwinding. It’s the kind of detail that reminds you you’re on vacation: not just away from home, but really away.

But our Southampton escape didn’t stop at the property line. Just down the road, we headed to The Beach Motel for dinner at Mirasol, their beautiful rooftop patio restaurant. As the sun began to dip behind the lake, the view from Mirasol was nothing short of cinematic. The food was exceptional, and the service was even better – a huge thank-you to Taylor, who made us feel so welcome and taken care of, adding to the warm, easygoing atmosphere that defines this special place.

The South Beach Motel is nothing short of photogenic, thanks to its collaboration with Toronto design studio Twenty-Two Twelve (yes, the same creative minds behind Hotel Julie on CTV’s “Staying Inn”).

The town itself surprised us in all the best ways. South Hampton is vibrant, walkable, and full of charm. From boutique shops to local galleries, there's a little something for everyone. One evening, we popped into Walker House, a local landmark that delivered yet another memorable meal – and more of that friendly small-town hospitality we kept encountering throughout our stay.

What we loved most about The South Beach Motel, though, was how it made us feel. It’s the kind of place that invites you to take a deep breath, kick off your shoes, and truly settle in. Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic hideaway, a family seeking a summer escape, or two business partners needing a weekend to recharge, South Beach delivers.

And with full access to the amenities at The Beach Motel, including their spa (which we’re definitely booking next time), there’s no need to leave the country to feel like you’ve escaped it.

We left Southampton feeling sun-kissed, inspired, and already plotting our return. With its bold design, thoughtful amenities, and heartfelt hospitality, South Beach proves that a dreamy escape doesn’t require a plane ticket – just a short drive and a willingness to slow down.

For more info, visit TheBeachMotel.ca

Equally unforgettable was the hospitality from Lauren, the manager of both properties, whose genuine warmth and attention to detail set the tone for the entire experience. It’s clear that these motels aren’t just about stunning design; they’re run by people who truly care about making your stay memorable.

Southampton sunsets, it must be said, are their own kind of magic. We capped off our days with beach walks along the shoreline – toes in the sand, cool breeze off the lake, the sky ablaze in oranges and pinks. It’s peaceful, unpretentious, and deeply beautiful.

A CULINARY DESTINATION WITH DOWNTOWN SOUL:

THE STORY BEHIND

When Habitat Social founder Jordan Chang moved to Port Credit to start a family, they brought with them a craving for the kind of dining experiences that once defined their life in downtown Toronto: those unforgettable meals found along Queen West, Ossington, and Kensington Market. Back then, a good meal felt like an adventure.

But in Mississauga, they found themselves making long drives just to recapture that spark. It wasn’t that people in Port Credit didn’t appreciate good food – far from it. What was missing was a place that reflected their taste and energy.

“I kept thinking about people who wanted a memorable date night, or a spot to celebrate with friends. Why should they have to settle for chains or drive into the city?” says Jordan.

That question became the seed for Habitat Social, a restaurant designed to bring downtown sophistication, creativity, and flair into a community that was ready for more.

The restaurant’s identity is deeply personal, shaped by a blend of cultural influence and culinary innovation. One of the founder’s biggest inspirations is Chef André Chiang, a figure known for his fearless fusion of French and Asian cuisines.

“Seeing someone with a similar background stay true to his roots while redefining fine dining gave me the confidence to do the same,” Chang shares. Toronto favourites like Hanmoto, DaiLo, and the now-closed Black Hoof also helped spark the vision: places where shareable plates and bold fusion flavours met relaxed, welcoming vibes.

At Habitat Social, the menu tells stories of travel and technique. Dishes are built on French and Italian foundations but elevated with Asian flavour profiles, all served in a bright, biophilic space that feels more L.A. than industrial downtown. The intention is clear: food should be delicious, beautiful, and conversationworthy, but never pretentious.

Social media and global travel continue to drive the restaurant’s evolution. “Instagram and TikTok are full of fresh ideas, but the most powerful moments come when I taste something in its home country. Understanding the cultural context behind a dish gives it soul, and that’s where real innovation comes from,” Jordan explains.

Guests immediately notice the difference when they walk in, from the restaurant’s modern, plant-rich interiors to a team that’s genuinely warm and passionate. But what truly sets Habitat Social apart is its fusion philosophy: intentional, deeply rooted, and always crafted with care.

One standout dish, the miso carbonara with coconut shrimp, perfectly embodies this. It takes a classic Italian favourite and enhances it with miso’s umami richness, while coconut shrimp nods to traditional Asian flavour pairings. The result is a dish that’s both comforting and unexpected.

Habitat Social attracts curious, appreciative diners – people who care about the craft behind a cocktail, the story behind a dish, and the energy of a truly special night out. “Our guests aren’t just eating dinner,” says Jordan. “They’re sharing an experience. And that’s exactly why Habitat Social exists.”

Where Wine, Art, and Culinary Excellence Converge

Since first opening its doors in 1998, the winery’s vision has been to create a destination where wine, food and art intersect with warmth and sophistication.

For those seeking a refined escape from the bustle of the GTA, 13th Street Winery is a hidden gem in the heart of Niagara wine country. Tucked in the open escarpment landscape west of St. Catharines, this boutique winery offers an immersive Niagara experience that harmoniously blends award-winning wines, gourmet cuisine, and captivating Canadian art.

Sip, Savour & Discover

At the heart of 13th Street Winery is a dedication to crafting exceptional VQA wines. From elegant whites to complex reds and celebrated sparkling wines, the winery's portfolio consistently earns accolades and respect across Canada. Guests can enjoy guided tastings, choosing four wines from a robust tasting menu, all while learning about the Niagara terroir and the winemaking philosophy that sets 13th Street apart.

For an even deeper dive into the estate, the Wine, Food & Art Tour offers a one-hour guided exploration of the vineyard, outdoor sculpture park, and production facilities, paired with a tasting of five premium wines.

Culinary Creativity at the Vineyard Kitchen Bistro

Open Monday to Saturday from mid-May through mid-October, the Vineyard Kitchen Bistro is where Chef Josh Berry transforms the freshest local ingredients into seasonal dishes that reflect the rich agricultural roots of Niagara. Chef Berry, a Niagara

native with nearly two decades of experience, designs menus that change regularly to highlight what’s fresh and in season.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch overlooking the vineyard, or come on Thursday and Friday evenings when the bistro stays open late for live music by local artists.

Sweet Tradition at the Farmhouse Bakery

As a self-declared butter tart aficionado, I can confidently say these are some of

shares my obsession with this quintessential Canadian treat. Whether you’re a purist who prefers classic plain, or someone who lives for the gooey indulgence of pecan, raisin, or Skor, 13th Street’s butter tarts are perfection in every bite –flaky, rich, and just the right amount of sweet.

But the bakery is more than just butter tarts (though I’d go for those alone). You'll also find a thoughtfully curated selection of artisanal cheeses, frozen gourmet meals prepared by Chef Josh, pantry staples, and beautiful home and kitchen gifts – ideal for hosting, gifting, or treating yourself.

Art in Every Corner

One of the most distinctive elements of 13th Street Winery is its devotion to the arts. The Sculpture Garden features large-scale works by some of Canada’s most notable contemporary artists, including Karoly Veress, Floyd Elzinga, and Dan Solomon. Wander the grounds with a glass of wine in hand and take in the creativity that flows through the property.

Inside, the Gallery showcases rotating exhibitions in a thoughtfully curated 6,000-square-foot space. Whether you’re an art aficionado or a casual admirer, the gallery and grounds offer an enriching complement to the winery’s hospitality.

Events, Seminars & More

13th Street Winery is also a beautiful venue for private events, including corporate retreats and intimate celebrations. The winery hosts educational wine and food seminars throughout the year, along with engaging, interactive sessions designed for enthusiasts who want to learn more about wine appreciation and pairing.

Can’t make the trip? No problem. Their online shop offers shipping across Ontario, so you can enjoy the flavours of 13th Street Winery delivered to your door.

Whether you’re planning a weekend in wine country or just a spontaneous afternoon road trip, 13th Street Winery offers something truly special. It’s a place where wine, food, and art come together in perfect harmony – crafted with care, steeped in culture, and proudly Canadian.

• Add a speaker and a Great Canadian Playlist (think Feist, Bahamas, and Leonard Cohen)

• Mix glassware with enamel cups or Mason jars for rustic charm

• Light citronella candles or burn a cedar bundle for a bug-free zone

PAINTING

NortH THE TRUE

Canadian landscape artist Brigitte

shares her path back to painting in a conversation with Best Side Magazine.

Granton

BEST SIDE: Let’s start at the beginning. When did you first realize you had a passion for art?

BRIGITTE: For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved sketching and painting. It really began with my father — he was a creative man, a corporate chef in downtown Toronto, but in his downtime, he loved to paint. He introduced me to oil painting and gave me my first easel, my first set of oil paints, a pochade box, pastels, and even pen and ink. I’d paint alongside him or spend time on my own sketching pets or scenes from nature.

BEST SIDE: That sounds like a beautiful way to grow up. Did you always know you wanted to be an artist?

BRIGITTE: As a little girl, whenever someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always the same: an artist. But when I got to high school, reality started to set in. Making a stable living as an artist felt out of reach at the time. So, I followed another passion — science.

BEST SIDE: Science! That’s quite the shift. What led you down that path?

BRIGITTE: I had always been curious about the natural world. I majored in Biology at the University of Western Ontario and later pursued a master’s in Zoology. Along the way, I developed technical lab skills, including learning to use an electron microscope — which was a dream for me. After graduation, I worked as a medical research assistant in a cardiovascular lab at Toronto General Hospital. Eventually, I moved into forensics, working in the Hair and Fibre unit at the Centre of Forensic Sciences, helping with criminal cases.

BEST SIDE: That’s a fascinating career. Did you keep painting during that time?

BRIGITTE: I did — though more sporadically. On weekends, mostly. But once I had children and things got busier, painting took a back seat. Then, when my kids were a little older and in school, I finally gave myself permission to return to art more seriously.

SOYRA. I tried different media and subjects, but I always came back to what I loved most: oil painting and capturing the lakes and reflections of Ontario. There’s something so grounding and serene about them — they speak to me in a way nothing else does.

BEST SIDE: And how did you go from painting at home to sharing your work publicly?

BRIGITTE: Once I built up some confidence, I began entering local competitions and art shows — and I was thrilled to start winning awards. I sold pieces at outdoor shows, in cafés, hair salons, really anywhere I could. Over time, I was invited to join galleries, and now my work is shown and sold through them. Some of my paintings have even found homes in private and corporate collections around the world.

BEST SIDE: That’s amazing. Looking back, what keeps you inspired?

BEST SIDE: What did that return to painting look like for you?

BRIGITTE: I took classes at a local art school and joined a local club called

BRIGITTE: Nature, always. I’ve spent so much of my life hiking through forests, camping in provincial parks, and simply observing the world around me. That love of the outdoors and appreciation for the environment is at the core of both my life and my art.

ELEVATING WELLNESS,

ONE SANCTUARY AT A TIME

Introducing HALO by Goji Yoga & Wellness. It’s not heaven, it’s HALO.

For over two years, Goji Yoga & Wellness has been a calm and restorative presence in the Oakville and Burlington wellness community. Known for its warm, boutique yoga studio and client-first philosophy, Goji has created a space where movement, mindfulness, and intentional design come together in harmony. Now, they’re taking their commitment to holistic health even further with the launch of HALO by Goji—a new wellness sanctuary dedicated to science-backed therapies and full-body healing.

Founded by a passionate duo, Max and Lena, with a simple yet powerful dream, Goji was never just about yoga. It was about creating a deeply nurturing experience—where clients didn’t have to bring a mat, towel, or even water— because every detail was thoughtfully provided. The studio’s new Oakville location, inspired by the Japanese WabiSabi aesthetic, features curved walls, natural textures, and double-insulated, soundproof walls that cancel out the noise of the busy street outside. The result? A tranquil cocoon where clients feel fully immersed in a sanctuary of calm, no matter what’s happening beyond the doors. From hot yoga to Pilates and barre, every offering is designed to help guests feel grounded, restored, and fully at ease.

But the Goji team knew there was more to offer. “Yoga is one part of the wellness puzzle,” Max shares. “I wanted to create a space where people could take an even deeper approach to healing. That’s how HALO was born.”

HALO by Goji is a brand-new wellness destination located within the studio, offering non-invasive, science-based therapies that work in harmony with the body’s natural processes. The experience begins in a softly glowing room lined with Himalayan salt bricks.

“THIS IS WHERE SCIENCE MEETS SELF-CARE. HALO IS A PLACE WHERE YOU DON’T JUST FEEL BETTER—YOU ARE BETTER, FROM THE INSIDE OUT.”

the space doesn’t rely on dispersed particles—instead, it creates a retreatlike atmosphere that instantly soothes the senses.

The therapies offered at HALO are curated with intention. From PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy, which recharges the body at a cellular level, to red light therapy that promotes skin health and tissue repair, each modality is rooted in proven wellness science. HALO also offers vibroacoustic therapy—a rare, deeply relaxing experience using sound

frequencies and vibrations to harmonize the body—and brain optimization through light therapy, which supports mental clarity, cognitive function, and mood balance. Clients can also sip hydrogeninfused water, a powerful antioxidant that enhances cellular health.

“This is where science meets self-care,” says Max. “HALO is a place where you don’t just feel better—you are better, from the inside out.”

As Goji expands its offerings, its mission remains unchanged: to be a sanctuary for community, connection, and conscious wellness. “We’re endlessly grateful to our amazing clients, talented teachers, and supportive local partners who’ve been with us every step of the way. Goji’s success is a reflection of the incredible community that surrounds us, and we’re humbled by the encouragement, hugs, and kind words we receive every day. You’re the reason we do what we do,” they say. “And we’re
