Editorial 10 years of PRBB

T

en years ago, there were no smartphones, social networks, or 3D printers. The PRBB didn’t exist either. It’s unbelievable what we have achieved together in a decade. Creativity, quality and rigor. Inside the building seven centres, 100 research groups and 1,500 people from over 50 countries all come toge ther. With an aggregate annual budget of about € 90M, more than 1,200 articles are published a year and researchers have received some of the most important distinctions, including 20 European Research Council grants.

But beyond numbers, the PRBB is an active community, collaborating, exchanging experiences and knowledge, while also enjoying shared recreational areas, making music together, playing volleyball and organising charity campaigns.

Since 2006, we have survived an economic crisis and structural changes. These obstacles have not prevented and will not prevent the park’s centres from continuing to generate excellent ideas aimed at improving health and quality of life.

10 anys de PRBB

F

a 10 anys, no existien els smartphones, ni les xarxes smartphones socials, ni les impressores 3D. Ni el PRBB. Sembla mentida tot el que hem aconseguit entre tots en una dècada. Creativitat, qualitat i rigor. A l’edifici s’hi apleguen set centres, uns 100 grups de recerca i unes 1.500 persones provinents de més de 50 països. Amb un pressupost agregat d’uns 90 milions d’euros anuals, es publiquen més de 1.200 articles l’any i s’han rebut algunes de les distincions més rellevants, incloent 20 beques de l’European Research Council.

Però més enllà de les xifres, el PRBB és una comunitat activa que col·labora, intercanvia experiències i coneixements i que gaudeix també d’espais de lleure comuns, fent música, jugant a vòlei o organitzant campanyes solidàries. Des del 2006, hem passat per una llarga crisi econòmica i han aparegut altres canvis estructurals. Uns obstacles que no han impedit i no impediran que els centres del parc segueixin creant excel·lents idees dirigides a millorar la salut i la qualitat de vida.

Encara poques dones en recerca Maruxa Martínez-Campos

E

l 8 de març tindrà lloc l’acte «Dia internacional de la dona» a l’Auditori del PRBB, organitzat pel CRG (www.crg.eu/events). Al Campus Mar de la UPF el matí estarà també ple d’accions participatives, cinema fòrum i debats al voltant del tema de les dones en la ciència (www.upf.edu/ upfigualtat).

I és que avui dia, tot i que ningú no dubta que la igualtat de gènere en la recerca és clau per a l’avenç de la ciència, encara hi ha poques dones en la ciència, especialment en càrrecs d’alt nivell. El PRBB no és aliè a aquest problema. Malgrat que prop del 60% del personal investigador al parc són dones, només representen el 30% dels caps de grup. Cal una acció positiva per canviar això, i

el PRBB i els seus centres n’estan fent una prioritat.

El CRG va començar a coordinar recentment el projecte LIBRA, que avaluarà la situació quant a gènere a 13 instituts europeus i implementarà accions per augmentar la representació de les dones en posicions de lideratge. Entretant, tots els centres del PRBB tenen comitès sobre gènere que treballen en iniciatives que van des de guies de llenguatge no sexista, de selecció de personal o contra l’assetjament, fins a beques per a joves investigadores amb fills. Altres iniciatives són cursos on-line sobre gènere, així com una sala de lactància.

Entre 2014 i 2015 el percentatge de dones conferenciants convidades a les PRBB-CRG Conferences va augmentar del 4% al 19% (12 de 63). El camí és llarg, però estem fent passos en la direcció correcta.

Still too few women in science

n March 8, an event for International Women’s Day will be held in the PRBB Auditorium, organised by the CRG (www.crg.eu/womens_ day). At the UPF Campus Mar the whole morning will also be filled with participatory action, cinema screenings and debates relating to women in science (www.upf.edu/upfigualtat).

Nobody argues that gender equality in research is the key to proper advancement in science.

Yet, there are still too few women in the field, especially in highlevel, decision-making positions.

The PRBB is not immune to this problem. Although 60% of the scientific staff working at the park are women, they only represent 30% of the group leader level positions. Positive action is needed to change this, and the

PRBB and its centres are making it a priority.

The CRG recently started coordinating the LIBRA Project to evaluate the level of gender equality in 13 European institutes and implement action to increase female representation in leadership roles. Additionally, all the PRBB centres have gender-related committees that have set up initiatives ranging from guides to non-sexist language, fair staff selection and anti-bullying measures, to grants for young female researchers with maternity responsibilities. Other initiatives include online courses on gender issues and a room for breast-feeding mothers.

Between 2014 and 2015 the percentage of invited female speakers in the PRBB-CRG Conference series went up from 4% to 19% (12 out of 63). The road is long, but the PRBB centres are taking steps in the right direction

U

n petit gest per ajudar a la recerca mèdica: això és el que demana el MARBiobanc als pacients de l’Hospital del Mar. «Aquí guardem els excedents de diagnòstic de tothom que es visita», explica Montserrat Torà, directora científica d’aquest servei de l’IMIM creat el 2011 i acreditat per la Generalitat. Tots els teixits provinents de biòpsies o cirurgies es guarden al biobanc, que en preserva la confidencialitat, traçabilitat i qualitat, a més de fer algunes tasques de processament de les mostres, microdissecció o obtenció d’ADN i ARN. Però només les mostres dels pacients que signen el consentiment informat es poden utilitzar per a recerca.

El MARBiobanc forma part de la Plataforma Nacional de Biobancs (52 a tot l’Estat espanyol). El control que segueixen és molt estricte. Només té accés a les instal·lacions el personal propi. Totes les sol·licituds, tant de l’IMIM com externes, són avaluades per dos comitès: l’Ètic, que avalua la cessió de les mostres en el context del projecte, i el Científic, que valora si la quantitat cedida és proporcional a l’ús que se’n vol fer i si hi ha un equip capaç de dur a terme la recerca. La direcció del biobanc dóna l’aprovació final.

«La mostra excedent no es pot esgotar mai. La finalitat primària de l’obtenció és el diagnòstic o tractament i cal que sempre en quedi una quantitat suficient per si calgués per necessitats del pacient», explica Torà. A més dels excedents diagnòstics, el biobanc també disposa de col·leccions creades amb una finalitat d’investigació en les quals els donants accedeixen a proporcionar una mostra per a una línia de recerca en concret.

Pioners El MARBiobanc (www.marbiobanc.imim. es) va començar a preparar-se anys abans que ho exigís el Reial Decret 1716/2011, que obligava que els biobancs gestionessin les mostres destinades a recerca. Però el decret excloïa els assajos clínics en alguns aspectes —tot i que utilitzessin mostres del biobanc— per considerar-los a mig camí entre la recerca i el tractament. Des de desembre de 2015, la nova llei d’assajos clínics inclou control des dels biobancs sobre la cessió i ús d’aquestes mostres; un pas que el MARBio-

banc ja va emprendre fa tres anys. De fet, al MARBiobanc revisen personalment els convenis amb la indústria farmacèutica per evitar que els excedents dels assajos s’usin per a recerques no especificades. «Al cap i a la fi, el malalt és sempre el propietari de les mostres; nosaltres som els responsables de garantir que s’utilitzin per a una finalitat ètica i científicament aprovada i que cap mostra no s’utilitzi sense consentiment informat», diu Torà.

Conscienciació A més de rebre passivament les mostres dels laboratoris de patologia de l’hospital (unes 15.000 biòpsies a l’any), el biobanc vol conscienciar els malalts per a que es facin donants, i als metges per a que incloguin en la seva pràctica clínica demanar als pacients que signin el «consentiment informat de biobanc».

Les mostres se cedeixen de forma anònima. Només el personal del biobanc té accés a les dades clíniques dels pacients, necessàries per seleccionar les mostres més adients per a cada recerca. A més, han de poder vincular les mostres amb el donant, que en qualsevol moment, pot revocar el permís per utilitzar-les. «Això només ens ha passat una vegada», recalca Torà. «La gent és increïblement solidària».

“We guarantee that samples are not used without consent”

A

small gesture to help medical research. This is what MARBiobanc asks of patients who come to the Hospital del Mar. “We store the diagnostic surplus from everyone visiting the hospital”, explains Montserrat Torà, scientific director of this service at the IMIM created in 2011 and accredited by the Generalitat. All tissues from biopsies or surgeries are stored in the biobank, which preserves confidentiality, traceability and quality, as well as doing some sample processing tasks, like microdissecting or obtaining DNA and RNA. The MARBiobanc (www.marbiobanc. imim.es) is part of the National Platform of Biobanks (52 throughout Spain). The control is very strict and only biobank staff have access to the facility. Only samples with informed consent can be used for research. All applications are evaluated by an ethics committee that evaluates the transfer of samples in the context of the project, and a scientific one that assesses whether the amount transferred is proportional to the use, and whether an expert team capable of carrying out the

The MARBiobanc started life years before Royal Decree 1716/2011 made it compulsory for biobanks to manage all samples intended for research. But clinical trials were excluded from certain regulatory aspects, even if they used samples from the biobank, because they were considered halfway between research and treatment.

Since December 2015, though, the new regulations include biobank control over the use of biological samples in clinical trials; something MARBiobanc has been doing for three years. In fact, MARBiobanc reviews its agreements with the pharmaceutical industry to prevent surpluses being used for unspecified research. “After all, the patient is the owner of the samples; we just ensure they are used for ethical and scientifically approved purposes and guarantee that no sample is used without informed consent”, says Torà.

Raising awareness In addition to the 15,000 biopsies per year that arrive passively from the hospital’s pathology laboratories, the biobank raises awareness amongst patients about the importance of donating. They also work to ensure that doctors ask patients to sign the biobank’s informed consent.

Samples given to researchers are always anonymised. Only biobank staff have access to patient clinical data, which is needed in order to select the most appropriate samples for each research. Also, they must be able to link the samples back to the donor, because at any time he or she may revoke their permission to use them. “This has happened just once”, stresses Torà. “People are incredibly collaborative”

n una investigació publicada a NeuroImage s’ha trobat que l’exposició a la contaminació de l’aire urbà interfereix directament en la maduració funcional del cervell. L’estudi va ser liderat per Jesús Pujol, investigador de l’Hospital del Mar, i coordinat per Jordi Sunyer, codirector i investigador del CREAL, centre aliat ISGlobal. Els investigadors van avaluar les

emissions dels vehicles en l’entorn escolar i van realitzar ressonàncies magnètiques del cervell a un subgrup dels nens participants en l’estudi Breathe. Van trobar que l’exposició a la contaminació de l’aire s’associa a canvis de connectivitat cerebral.

«Durant l’edat escolar, els sistemes cerebrals s’integren uns amb els altres i s’estableixen les bases del que serà el cervell adult. Hem vist que la contaminació urbana pot retardar aquest procés maduratiu cerebral», conclou Sunyer.

Traffic pollution may alter brain maturation

I

n a study published in NeuroImage researchers found that exposure to urban air pollution directly interferes with the functional maturation of the brain. The study was led by Jesús Pujol, a researcher at the Hospital del Mar, and coordinated by Jordi Sunyer, co-director and researcher at CREAL, an ISGlobal allied centre. The researchers used gene-

ral vehicle exhaust indicators measured in a school environment, and a subgroup of children participating in the BREATHE study had MRIs. The researchers found that exposure to air pollution is associated with changes in brain connectivity.

“During childhood, major brain systems integrate with each other and the basis of what will become the adult brain is established. We have found that urban pollution may slow this brain maturation process”, Sunyer said

n un estudi publicat a Nature, Alexandros Pittis i Toni Gabaldón aporten nova llum al debat sobre el que es considera el salt evolutiu més gran després de l’origen de la vida: la incorporació dels mitocondris a les cèl·lules. Alguns científics defensaven que els mitocondris es van incorporar a les cèl·lules aviat en l’evolució, mentre que d’altres defensaven una incorporació tardana, quan una cèl·lula hoste més complexa podria afavorir l’entrada d’una altra cèl·lula al seu interior i facilitar-ne la integració i el manteniment futur.

n an article published in Nature, Toni Gabaldón and Alexandros Pittis shed light on one of the most crucial moments since the origin of life: the cell’s acquisition of mitochondria. Some scientists advocated an early incorporation of mitochondria, while others proposed a later

inclusion of this organelle, when the host cell would have been mature enough to permit the entry and permanence of another cell (the mitochondrion) within itself.

The CRG researchers have clarified the matter, proposing a theory that defines the time frame for the acquisition.

“We tracked down proteins common to all complex organisms, and reconstructed their evolution. We found that the proteins related to the acquisition of mitochondria arrived later than those linked to other parts of the cell”, states Gabaldón, the study’s principal investigator. “Our work demonstrates that mitochondria were acquired late in cell evolution, and that the host cell already had a certain degree of complexity”, says Pittis, first

egons un estudi liderat per José Ayté de la UPF i realitzat en col·laboració amb investigadors del CRG i el Vall d’Hebron Institut d’Oncologia (VHIO), el llevat Schizosaccharomyces pombe expressa una proteïna, l’Fkh2, que juga un paper dual en la reproducció del llevat, ja que actua alternativament com a repressor gènic o com a «obrellaunes» de la cromatina per permetre l’activació gènica.

Depenent de les condicions, els llevats poden reproduir-se per mitosi, o reproducció asexual, o per meiosi, la reproducció sexual, que genera més diversitat en la progènie, la qual cosa és útil en temps d’escassetat. Els investigadors han demostrat que la proteïna Fkh2 reprimeix l’expressió gènica durant la mitosi, però obre la cromatina quan comença la meiosi, permetent l’expressió de gens característics d’aquests tipus de divisió. Els autors assenyalen que aquest mecanisme de regulació gènica és

A yeast gene with a dual personality

A

ccording to research led by José Ayté from the UPF and involving researchers from the CRG and VHIO, the yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe expresses the protein Fkh2 that plays a dual role in its reproduction, acting both as a

gene repressor and a “chromatin-opener” enabling gene activation.

Depending on the environment, fission yeast can reproduce through mitosis, asexual reproduction, or meiosis, sexual reproduction that generates a greater diversity of daughter cells, a useful strategy in times of shortage.

The researchers have shown that the Fkh2 protein inhibits gene expression during mitosis, but when meiosis starts it opens up chromatin, allowing the expression of meiosisspecific genes. This mechanism is similar to a genetic mechanism found in breast cancer

egons un estudi epidemiològic liderat per Helmut Schröder a l’IMIM, incrementar la despesa en alimentació s’associa a una millora de la qualitat de la dieta, especialment a un augment de consum de fruites i verdures i, per tant, a una evolució favorable del pes i a una disminució del risc de patir malalties cardiometabòliques (obesitat, diabetis, problemes cardiovasculars).

Per contra, una disminució de la despesa

s’associa a un augment de consum de fast food o brioixeria.

L’estudi, publicat al British Journal of Nutrition, ha consistit en fer un seguiment durant 10 anys de 2.181 homes i dones d’entre 25 i 74 anys, pertanyents a l’estudi REGICOR (Registre Gironí del Cor). Se’ls va mesurar el pes i l’alçada i es van obtenir les dades dietètiques mitjançant un qüestionari. La mitjana de despesa alimentària es va calcular amb les dades oficials del govern. Aquest treball subratlla la necessitat de fer polítiques que promoguin dietes saludables accessibles a tots els nivells d’ingressos.

Higher spending is associated with a healthier diet

A

ccording to an epidemiological study led by Helmut Schröder at the IMIM, spending more money on food is linked to a better quality diet, particularly to increased consumption of fruit and vegetables. This leads to a healthier weight and decreased risk of cardiometabolic diseases like obesity or diabetes. On the other hand, spending less on food is linked to greater consumption of fast food.

The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, consisted of monitoring 2181 men and women aged 25 to 74, all part of the REGICOR (Registre Gironí del Cor) programme, over a period of ten years. The researchers measured the participants’ height and weight, and obtained dietary data from a questionnaire. The average food cost was calculated using official government data. This work underlines the need for policies and action that promote healthy diets accessible to all income levels

This is according to research published in Nature and led by Sergi Castellano from the Max Planck Institute (Germany), in colaboration with ICREA researcher Tomàs Marquès-Bonet and Carles Lalueza-Fox from

IBE, and researchers from the CNAG-CRG. Humans and Neanderthals split from a common ancestor 600,000 years ago, shortly after Neanderthals left Africa. Then 65,000 years ago modern humans also spread from that continent and began to interbreed with Neanderthals in Europe. This is proved by the fact we still have traces of Neanderthal DNA in our genomes. The researchers have now, for the first time, found modern DNA in the genome of a Neanderthal found in a cave in southern Siberia, and have dated this DNA as being 100,000 years old.

Murthy, from Harvard University, USA, is interested in understanding how neural circuits process information, particularly in the rodent olfactory system. He studies how information about volatile odorants is represented in the early sensory parts of the brain, and how this information is processed by sensory circuits to guide behavior.

Marín, a senior pulmonologist in Hospital Univesitario Miguel Ser vet in Zaragoza is coordinator of the Respiratory Sleep Disorders Unit and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza. He focuses his research on the natural history of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He has been invited by Esther Barreiro and Joaquim Gea (IMIM).

PAUL R. KEMP, Monday March 21. Kemp, from the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Imperial College in London, UK, works on a range of projects related to the control of cell phenotype.

Most of his work is focused on the control of muscle cell phenotype. He has been invited by Esther Barreiro (IMIM).

SERGI CASTELLANO, Friday April 1. Castellano, from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, focuses on understanding the role of essential micronutrients, with particular emphasis on selenium, in the adaptation of human metabolism to the different environments encountered by archaic and modern humans as they migrated around the world. His group is also interested in the population history of these humans as it relates to their interbreeding and exchange of genes that facilitated adaptation to new environments.

He has been invited by Roderic Guigó (CRG).

MONTSERRAT COROMINAS, Monday April 11. Corominas, from Barcelona University, Spain, aims to understand how signaling pathways integrate into chromatin dynamics during wing disc regeneration. She studies the function of ASH2, a trithorax-group protein. Specifically, she focuses on how ASH2 influences different aspects of transcription and what drives the specificity of ASH2 in the different complexes. She has been invited by Cristina Pujades (UPF).

Hem passat de ser un centre creat al voltant d’un grup de recerca gran, a esdevenir, en paraules del nostre Consell Assessor Científic «un dels centres de recerca en epidemiologia ambiental més importants d’Europa, un líder global, que fa recerca d’alta qualitat i que lidera moltes de les col·laboracions europees en aquest camp».

M

Com és el CREAL avui?

Un centre dinàmic, integrat per gent jove i amb talent. Una de les claus és el treball en equip, començant per la direcció compartida amb Jordi Sunyer i Manolis Kogevinas.

Tenim 13 grups de recerca i un total de 120 persones de més de 20 nacionalitats. Durant el 2015 hem participat en 31 projectes internacionals i hem publicat 182 articles.

Segons el darrer informe SCIMAGO, estem entre el 4% dels millors centres de recerca a escala mundial quant a excel·lència, lideratge, i qualitat de les publicacions.

Com serà el CREAL de demà, després de la integració amb ISGlobal?

La integració és ja una realitat que comparteixo amb n’Antoni Plasència, director general d’ISGlobal. Serem un centre amb més de 350 persones de 25 nacionalitats, amb 30 grups de recerca, 200 projectes de recerca i un pressupost anual d’uns 20 milions d’euros. La integració permetrà expandir la recerca ambiental i en malalties cròniques no transmissibles a països en desenvolupament, així com incorporar l’equitat com a dimensió clau de la nostra recerca. Donem molta importància al model ISGlobal orientat a traslladar els resultats de recerca en acció. El model interuniversitari en col·laboració amb la Universitat de Barcelona i la Universitat Pompeu Fabra es veurà reforçat. Tot això és una oportunitat que agraïm i davant la qual farem tot el que calgui per estar a l’altura.

Quins són els reptes de futur de l’epidemiologia ambiental?

Acabem de fer un simposi sobre el futur de l’epidemiologia ambiental on han destacat temes com l’exposoma, els sensors d’ús individual, les mesures per satèl·lit, el big data, nous models de causalitat i els models de sistemes d’integració de la informació.

Estan apareixent nous paradigmes com el de la salut planetària o l’aplicació de models sistèmics a la salut pública. Se’ns presenta una dècada apassionant per a l’epidemiologia ambiental que estarà marcada per la importància dels canvis climàtics globals.

On veus el CREAL d’aquí a 10 anys?

Treballem per desenvolupar un centre que integri el millor de tots i es projecti com un referent mundial en recerca en salut global. Hem de ser capaços de fer contribucions científiques destacades i d’ajudar a traslladar-les en solucions reals. Som un gra de sorra davant d’aquest reptes, però un gra de sorra necessari i important. Si ho fem bé, d’aquí a 10 anys haurem tingut temps d’enfrontar-nos a una nova crisi i de pensar en una nova transformació.

PERFIL / PROFILE El 2015, el Centre de Recerca en Epidemiologia Ambiental (CREAL) celebrava els seus 10 anys d’existència. Aquesta celebració coincideix amb un avançat procés d’integració amb l’Institut de Salut Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal). Durant l’any es van fer diverses accions, que van culminar amb un simposi sobre el futur de l’epidemiologia ambiental. Fem una mirada al passat i al futur amb Josep M. Antó, director del CREAL. In 2015, the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) celebrated its tenth anniversary. This celebration coincided with the final stages of the centre’s integration with the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Several events were held throughout the year, culminating in a symposium on the future of environmental epidemiology. We take a look into the past, and the future, with Josep M. Antó, the director of CREAL. “We are a dynamic centre full of young talented people” What is your assessment of these last 10 years? ery positive! We have gone from being a centre set up around a large research group, to becoming, in the words of our Scientific Advisory Board, “one of the most important environmental epidemiology research centres in Europe, a global leader that turns out high quality research and which heads up many of the collaborative European projects in this field.”

What is the CREAL like today?

A dynamic centre full of young talented people. One key is teamwork, starting with the management and direction that I share with Jordi Sunyer and Manolis Kogevinas. We have 13 research groups and 120 workers from over 20 countries. In 2015 we participated in 31 international projects and published 182 articles. According to the SCIMAGO report, we are in the top 4% of research centres worldwide in terms of excellence, leadership and quality of publications.

What will the CREAL be like after its integration with ISGlobal?

This integration is already a reality I am sharing with Antoni Plàsencia, the CEO of ISGlobal. We will have a centre that includes more than 350 people from 25 countries, with 30 research groups, 200 research projects, and an annual budget of about €20 M. The integration will allow expanded research into environmental research and chronic non-communicable

diseases in developing countries, as well as incorporate equity as a key dimension of our research. We attach a great deal of importance to the ISGlobal model that aims to transfer research results into action. The inter-university model, in partnership with the University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University, will be strengthened. This represents a great opportunity that we truly appreciate and we will make every effort to prove ourselves worthy.

What future challenges are there for environmental epidemiology?

We have just had a symposium on the future of environmental epidemiology which highlighted issues such as the exposome, individual sensors, satellite measurements, big data, new causality models, and information integration system models. New paradigms are emerging, like planetary health and the application of systemic models in public health. Environmental epidemiology has an exciting decade ahead of it that will be marked by the importance of global climate change.

Where do you see the CREAL 10 years from now?

We are working on developing a centre that integrates the best of everyone and stands out as a world leader in global health research. We must be able to produce outstanding scientific contributions and help translate them into real solutions. We are just a grain of sand in the face of these challenges, but necessary and important all the same. If we work well, in 10 years we will have had time to confront a new crisis and consider a new transformation

n estudi publicat a American Journal of Epidemiology mostra que el consum de peix durant l’embaràs per sobre del límit recomanat de 340 g a la setmana presenta beneficis en el desenvolupament neuropsicològic dels nens.

A

study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology shows that eating fish during pregnancy, above the recommended limit of 340g a week, has benefits in the neuropsycholo-

gical development of children. This research was led by the CREAL, an ISGlobal allied centre. The researchers analysed data from a birth cohort of nearly 1,600 women and their children, and evaluated the consumption of various types of fish.

They used cognitive tests on children at 14 months and at 5 years old, as well as Asperger tests at age 5, in order to evaluate their neuropsychological development.

“Children whose mothers ate up to 600g of fish a week showed better brain development, especially at 5 years of age, and less symptoms in the autistic spectrum scale”, explains Jordi Júlvez, coordinator of the study

nvestigadors de l’IMIM han trobat un mecanisme epigenètic implicat en la regulació de la glucosa en sang. L’estudi, publicat a la revista Human Molecular Genetics, mostra que la metilació (una modificació epigenètica) del gen TXNIP està associada a la diabetis tipus 2 i a alts nivells de glucosa sanguínia. Aquests resultats, fets en tres cohorts diferents, amb un total de més de 1.000 pacients, podrien servir

tant per identificar pacients amb risc de desenvolupar diabetis, com per controlar la resposta al tractament. El treball ha estat coordinat per Carolina Soriano, investigadora del grup de recerca Neurovascular de l’IMIM, i per Jordi Jiménez Conde, neuròleg al mateix grup.

New type 2 diabetes biomarker identified

R

esearchers from the IMIM have found an epigenetic mechanism implicated in the regulation of blood sugar. The study, published in the journal Molecular Human Genetics, reveals that methylation (an epigenetic modification) of the TXNIP gene is associated with diabetes type 2 and high blood glucose levels.

These results, gathered from three independent patient cohorts involving a total of

more than 1000 patients could help to both identify patients at risk of developing diabetes and control treatment response. The work was coordinated by Carolina Soriano, a researcher from the Neurovascular research group at the IMIM, and Jordi Jiménez Conde, a neurologist from the same group.

“We are currently studying the implications and specific role of this gene in diabetes. In the future it could provide a possible therapeutic target for treating the disease or controlling glucose concentrations”, states the scientist

n estudi publicat a PLOS Computational Biology per Javier Macía i dirigit per Ricard Solé a l’IBE i Francesc Posas del CEXS-UPF presenta una nova metodologia que permet millorar el disseny dels dispositius computacionals multicel·lulars. Ja s’han creat circuits biològics sintètics amb diverses funcions, des de la detecció de molècules fins a la producció d’energia.

Això no obstant, el seu disseny presenta limitacions: es requereix una complexa enginyeria genètica per implementar

circuits complexos, i un cop construïts, les parts no són reutilitzables.

Ara els autors proposen distribuir la computació en diversos «consorcis cellulars» o grups de cèl·lules que estan separats físicament entre ells, en lloc de dissenyar tots els circuits dins d’una mateixa cèl·lula. Aquest disseny modular permetria ampliar la complexitat dels circuits, així com la reutilització dels components amb una mínima enginyeria genètica. Els investigadors han demostrat el potencial d’aquest enfocament mitjançant la implementació de funcions lògiques complexes amb fins a sis inputs, o senyals d’entrada, al sistema —una complexitat que no s’havia assolit

Researchers improve biological computing

A

study published in PLOS Computational Biology by Javier Macía and led by Ricard Solé at the IBE and Francesc Posas from the CEXS-UPF, presents a novel method for better implementing multicellular computing devices. Synthetic biological circuits have been designed for a variety of functions from sensing molecules to energy production, but their design has limitations:

complex genetic engineering is required to implement intricate circuits, and, once built, the parts are not reusable.

Now the authors propose to distribute the computation between several physically separate cell consortia or ‘groups’ rather than engineering all the circuits within a single cell. This spatial modular design would allow a scaling up of circuit complexity, as well as the reuse of components with minimal genetic engineering.

The researchers demonstrated the potential of this approach by implementing complicated logical functions with up to six inputs, a level of complexity not yet reached in biological circuits, thus demonstrating the scalability of this method

Els trastorns mentals, un factor de risc per a malalties cròniques físiques Rosa Manaut

es persones amb trastorn d’ansietat tenen un major risc d’acabar patint malalties cròniques com ara malalties del cor, dolor crònic o úlcera pèptica. Aquesta és una de les conclusions d’un estudi publicat a JAMA Psychiatry, liderat per la Universitat d’Otago (Nova Zelanda) i en el qual ha participat Jordi Alonso de l’IMIM. A partir de dades de les enquestes de Salut Mental Mundial, que van incloure

més de 47.000 persones de 17 països, s’ha trobat que hi ha una associació estadísticament significativa entre els trastorns de salut mental de tot tipus i l’aparició posterior de 10 patologies físiques estudiades.

Mental disorders increase the risk of developing chronic physical diseases

eople with anxiety disorders have an increased risk of suffering chronic diseases such as heart disease, chronic pain, and peptic ulcers. This is one of the conclusions of a new study published in JAMA Psychiatry, led by the University of Otago (New Zealand) and involving Jordi Alonso from the IMIM. Analysing the data obtained in World Mental Health surveys involving more

than 47,000 people from 17 countries, a statistically significant association was found between mental disorders and the subsequent appearance of the 10 physical pathologies studied.

“The findings of the study suggest that the harmful effects of mental disorders on physical health accumulate throughout life and increase the risk of comorbidity with mental disorders. This is why treatment for all mental disorders must also incorporate a focus on health behaviours and physical health”, explain the researchers

ins cadascuna de les nostres cèllules hi ha estructures anomenades orgànuls que actuen, en molts aspectes, com els òrgans del cos humà. El 1884 el zoòleg alemany Karl August Möbius va ser el primer a utilitzar un diminutiu d’òrgan, organula, per fer referència a les estructures cel·lulars.

El nucli és el centre de control de la cèllula i en dirigeix totes les activitats utilitzant l’ARN missatger per enviar informació. És similar al nostre cervell, que controla les funcions del cos enviant missatges a través d’impulsos elèctrics. Així mateix, al nucli hi té lloc la divisió cel·lular; seria, per tant, també el nostre sistema reproductiu.

El citoesquelet, format per microtúbuls i altres elements en forma de tub, facilita aquest transport, a més de contribuir a mantenir l’estructura de la cèl·lula com ho fa el sistema esquelètic humà.

The nucleus is the control centre of the cell and directs all cell activities. It uses messenger RNA to send information. It is similar to our brains, which control most body functions by sending messages through electric impulses. The nucleus is also the major site for cell reproduction, where cell division takes place; and could therefore be compared, too, to our reproductive system.

The cell membrane is responsible for protecting the cell, acting as a barrier

between the cytoplasm and the outside, and controlling what enters and leaves in the same way our skin protects our body.

Mitochondria are the cell’s energy factories, as they produce energy through the oxidation of sugar, in a process called cellular respiration. In a way, they are the equivalent of both our stomach, which supplies us with energy from the food we eat, and our lungs.

The cytoplasm is the cell’s circulatory system: a gel-like fluid in which all organelles are supported and through which all kinds of materials (proteins, lipids, and sugars) are transported from one part of the cell to another via the cytoskeleton.

This is formed by microtubules and other tube-shaped elements that also contribute to maintaining the cell’s structure, just like the human skeletal system does.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus work together to form the building blocks of the cell. The ER, the cell’s constructor, is in charge of synthesising the proteins needed. These are then sent to the Golgi, which packages, processes and modifies them before forwarding the proteins to their final destination.

Cells also produce waste, and lysosomes act as their excretory system, breaking down cell parts and removing the unwanted bits.

One could say, therefore, that the millions of cells making up our body are teeny-weeny versions of us

ngredients per a quatre persones: 4 tassetes d’arròs, 8 tassetes de brou «de cuit» o de pollastre, 2 talls de cansalada fresca, 1 o 2 botifarres, 250 g de costelles de porc trossejades, 1 tomàquet sencer, mig tomàquet ratllat, 1 patata, 250 g de cigrons, 1 cabeça d’alls, safrà i dos o tres trossos de nap (opcional).

Coure els cigrons amb el brou uns 30 minuts, fins que estiguin tous. Mentrestant, pelar i tallar la patata a rodanxes d’1 cm de gruix, que es daura breument en una paella amb la cabeça d’alls. Ho reservem. A la mateixa paella, posem a daurar la carn i la cansalada trossejada amb una mica d’oli d’oliva i el mig tomàquet ratllat. Daurem breument la botifarra (i uns trossets de nap) i ofeguem l’arròs. Ho incorporem tot a una cassola de fang o vidre, ajustem de sal i afegim el brou i el colorant o safrà perquè agafi color.

Raül Torán (CREAL) recommends: Valencia-style baked rice

ngredients for four people: 4 small cups of rice, 8 small cups of vegetable or chicken stock, 2 slices of pancetta, one or two sausages, 250g of chopped pork ribs, 1 whole tomato, half a grated tomato, one potato, 250g of chickpeas, 1 head of garlic, saffron, and two or three pieces of turnip (optional).

Cook the chickpeas in the stock for about 30 minutes, until soft. Meanwhile, peel the potato and cut it into 1 cm-thick slices.

Briefly brown these in a frying pan with the garlic bulb. Set them aside. In the same pan brown meat and chopped pancetta with a little olive oil and the grated tomato. Briefly brown the sausage (chopped turnip) and add water to the rice. Put everything into a ceramic or glass cooking pot. Add salt to taste, and pour on the broth. Add the saffron to give it some colour. Spread the slices of potato over the dish, place the garlic head in the middle and add a halved tomato. Finally, pop it in the oven for 25 minutes at 250ºC. When the rice is dry it is done

El finançament públic per a la recerca a Espanya Els pressupostos de recerca, desenvolupament i innovació (R+D+I) per al 2016 han augmentat prop del 0,4% respecte a l’any anterior; una bona notícia que mitiga només en part la baixada de prop del 34% que havia tingut lloc en els darrers quatre anys. Enfront de les oscil·lacions del finançament públic per a la recerca, des de la COSCE (Confederació de Societats Científiques d’Espanya) es reclama un pacte d’Estat per la ciència, a fi de mantenir la màxima estabilitat dels recursos per a la recerca, independentment dels cicles electorals. Com afecta els investigadors aquesta inseguretat en el finançament dels seus projectes?

Public funding for research in Spain The Spanish research, development and innovation budget for 2016 has increased almost 0.4% over the previous year; good news but a drop in the ocean when compared to the 34% drop experienced over the past four years. Because of the oscillating public funding for research, the COSCE (Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies) is demanding a State Pact for Science to ensure the stability of resources for research, regardless of electoral cycles. How does this insecurity in project funding affect researchers at the PRBB?

Lucas Carey (UPF) «Espanya podria atreure persones amb talent de tot el món que volen fer ciència creativa i apassionant a petita escala.

El finançament a nivell regional i nacional hi és, i la gent vindria per la qualitat de vida i la qualitat de la ciència. Malauradament, és gairebé impossible per als nous caps de grup obtenir contractes adequats de finançament, o romandre a Espanya a llarg termini. El resultat és que, fins i tot tenint en compte la situació actual de finançament, Espanya és menys atractiva del que podria ser.»

“Spain could be recruiting talented people from around the world who want to do exciting small scale creative science. The funding is there at the regional and national level, and people will come for the quality of life and the quality of science. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for new PIs to obtain proper contracts for funding, or to remain in Spain for the long-term. The result is that, even given the current funding situation, Spain is far less attractive than it should otherwise be.”

Iñaki Ruiz-Trillo (IBE) «La ciència és una feina costosa i els recursos són limitats. Obtenir una beca nacional a Espanya no és gaire més competitiu que en d’altres països (probablement menys), però és definitivament molt més competitiu del que ho era fa uns anys. Més problemàtic és el nivell de finançament, relativament modest, que limita

les opcions per contractar investigadors qualificats i, per tant, ser competitius en l’àmbit internacional. La manca de pressupost bàsic pel que fa als centres i les dificultats en l’obtenció de diners per a personal per cobrir els salaris dels estudiants agreugen encara més el problema. Una situació que el crowdfunding, encara que sigui una alternativa interesding sant, probablement no podrà resoldre mai.»

“Science is an expensive enterprise and resources are limited. Getting a national grant in Spain is not much more difficult than in other countries (probably less so), but there is definitely a lot more competition now than there was a few years ago.

More problematic is the level of funding, which is relatively modest, limiting the possibilities of hiring qualified researchers and, therefore being competitive in the international arena. The lack of core budget at the institute level and the difficulties in getting personnel grants to cover the salaries of students further magnify the problem. A situation that crowdfunding, although an interesting alternative, will probably never solve.”

Marta López (IMIM) «Sempre es pensa que el finançament competitiu per a la recerca és deficitari; justament l’altre dia vaig sentir que els recursos a Espanya per a recerca havien caigut un 40% en els quatre últims anys. Però trobar dades objectives de l’evolució del finançament no és possible, i és per això que cada centre ho viu segons la seva experiència. En el cas de l’IMIM, el finançament de recerca procedent de fons competitius sembla que

es va recuperant; aquesta tendència, junt amb el fet que els pressupostos estatals de 2016 per a recerca s’han incrementat en un 0,4%, permeten ser optimistes. Sense oblidar, però, que l’entorn és cada cop més competitiu i que la gestió també és cada vegada més complicada. Per millorar el finançament, caldrà cercar altres formes imaginatives que mirin més al sector privat.»

But finding objective data on the funding evolution is not possible, and each centre has its own experience. In the case of the IMIM, research money from competitive funds seems to be recovering. This trend, together with the fact that the 2016 state budget for research has increased by 0.4%, is encouraging. NOTÍCIA BREU / BRIEF NEWS Fomentant la ciència honesta.L’última setmana de gener va tenir lloc al Parc una campanya de conscienciació sobre el manteniment de registres i la gestió de dades, una iniciativa liderada pel grup de treball de Bones Pràctiques Científiques, format per membres de tots els centres del PRBB.

Amb el lema «La bona ciència, la ciència honesta», va consistir en unes preguntes obertes i tres seminaris participatius de 20 ponents, tots investigadors dels centres del PRBB. Promoting honest science. The final week of January saw a record-keeping and data-management campaign at the park,

an initiative led by the Good Scientific Practice working group, comprising members from all the PRBB centres.

With the slogan “Good science, honest science”, the campaign had two parts: a “big quiz” comprising questions open for discussion and a series of workshops. Around 200 people attended the sessions, with over 20 speakers, all researchers at PRBB centres

Esther Román i Fonoll Agramunt (Lleida), 1969 Assistent de Direcció del PRBB Com ha canviat el PRBB en els anys que has estat aquí?

Hi sóc des de ben bé els inicis del Parc, he viscut la seva projecció i construcció i he vist com el seu potencial humà anava creixent, els grups de recerca s’anaven afermant i la seva projecció internacional anava augmentant fins a convertir-se en el centre de referència de la recerca biomèdica a Europa que és avui. Per a mi és un gran orgull treballar aquí.

Què et faria totalment feliç?

No crec en la felicitat total, però hi contribuiria saber que tots els nens del món, siguin allà on siguin, poden gaudir de la infantesa que mereixen, amb totes les necessitats per al seu correcte desenvolupament cobertes, envoltats d’amor i seguretat, apartats dels conflictes bèl·lics i la violència i de l’estupidesa humana que els provoca.

Què és el que més et molesta?

L’abús de poder. Si t’hi fixes, totes les injustícies són per un abús de poder.

Ah, i la mala educació!

Quin és el teu personatge favorit?

Les dues Hepburns Hepburns; la Katharine, per ser una dona moderna i avançada al seu temps, i l’Audrey, per la seva elegància, dins i fora de la pantalla i pel llegat d’autenticitat i estil discret que ens va deixar.

El teu lema?

«Viu de manera que, quan els teus fills pensin en justícia, amor i integritat, pensin en tu», d’H. Jackson Brown.

How has the PRBB changed in the years you’ve been here?

I’ve been here right from the beginning, I’ve lived through its planning and construction and I’ve seen how its human potential has grown, the research groups have been strengthened, and the international projection increased until it has become the European benchmark for biomedical research it is today. I am very proud of working here.

What would make you totally happy?

I don’t believe in total happiness, but it would help to know that all the children of the world, wherever they may be, can enjoy the childhood they deserve, with everything they need for their proper development, surrounded by love and safety, away from war, violence and the human stupidity that causes them.

What annoys you most?

Abuse of power. If you look, all injustice stems from abuse of power. Oh, and rudeness!

Who is your favourite person?

The two Hepburns, Katharine for being a modern woman and ahead of her time, and Audrey, for her elegance, both on and off the screen, and the legacy of authenticity and discreet style she left us.

Your motto?

Nou projecte de ciència ciutadana

Pia Cosma guanya el «Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2015». La investigadora del CRG ha rebut aquest reconeixement «pel seu treball publicat a Cell Cell, que ofereix una nova visió sobre com s’organitza i s’empaqueta l’ADN, així com sobre les conseqüències funcionals d’aquest empaquetament». Aquest treball es va dur a terme en col·laboració amb l’Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO). Cosma també ha estat nominada per al Premi Vanguàrdia de la Ciència 2015.

Els investigadors també han creat un videojoc anomenat «Melanogaster: Catch the Fly!» basat en el dia a dia al laboratori i en el treball de camp, amb què els jugadors es podran posar a la pell d’un científic i intentar dur a terme un projecte científic.

l grup de recerca de Josefa González a l’IBE (CSIC-UPF) i la plataforma «La ciència al teu món» lideren un projecte de ciència ciutadana que compta amb el finançament de la Fundació Espanyola per a la Ciència i la Tecnologia (FECYT) i l’ERC. El projecte, anomenat «Melanogaster: Catch the Fly», té com a objectiu apropar la ciència als estudiants de secundària, professors i públic en general de petites ciutats del centre i sud d’Espanya.

Els participants recol·lectaran, classificaran i analitzaran mosques que després seran utilitzades en un projecte guardonat recentment amb una beca ERC-Consolidator al Laboratori de genòmica evolutiva i funcional. L’objectiu del projecte és intentar entendre com els organismes s’adapten a l’ambient identificant els gens i mecanismes moleculars implicats en l’adaptació.

he lab led by Josefa González at the IBE (CSIC-UPF) and the outreach platform “La ciència al teu món” (Science in your world) are leading a new citizen science project thanks to a fellowship granted by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and an ERC Grant. The project, named “Melanogaster: Catch the Fly”, aims to take science to high school students, teachers, and the general public in small towns in central and southern Spain.

Participants will collect, classify, and analyse flies that will then be used in the ERC-Consolidator project recently awarded to the Evolutionary and Functional Genomics lab. The project’s goal is to understand how organisms adapt to the environment by identifying the genes and molecular processes involved in that adaptation.

The researchers have also created a videogame called “Melanogaster: Catch the Fly!” based on common situations faced in the lab and field while collecting samples.

Pia Cosma, awarded the “Premi Ciutat de Barcelona” 2015. The CRG group leader has been recognised “for her work published in Cell, which offers a new vision of how DNA is organised and packaged, as well as the functional consequences of this packaging”. This work was carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO). Cosma has also been nominated for the Vanguardia de la Ciència 2015 Award.

Núria López-Bigas guanya una beca Consolidator del ERC (European Research Council). La investigadora ICREA i cap de grup del GRIB (UPF-IMIM) ha rebut aquesta beca de dos milions d’euros per caracteritzar el paper de les mutacions en regions no codificants en els tumors més freqüents de la població. Aquestes beques estan destinades a investigadors joves amb una carrera consolidada d’entre 7 i 12 anys.

Núria López-Bigas wins a European Research Council grant. The ICREA researcher and group leader at the GRIB (UPFIMIM), has received this 2 million euros grant to characterise the role of mutations in non-coding regions in the population’s most prevalent tumours. These grants are intended to help develop innovative and excellent projects by young researchers with a consolidated career of between 7 and 12 years.

Jaume Bertranpetit i Isabelle Vernos guardonats amb la medalla Narcís Monturiol. Bertranpetit, cap de grup a l’IBE (CSIC-UPF), i Vernos, cap de grup del CRG, han rebut aquesta medalla, que ret homenatge als individus i les organitzacions que han fet una contribució excel·lent al desenvolupament de la ciència i la tecnologia a Catalunya.

Josefa González s’uneix a AcademiaNet. La cap del grup de Genòmica Evolutiva i Funcional de l’IBE (CSIC-UPF) ha estat nominada per unir-se a AcademiaNet, una base de dades de dones distingides dins l’acadèmia. Va ser creada el 2010 amb l’objectiu d’incrementar la visibilitat de les dones excepcionals en ciència i augmentar també el seu nombre en posicions de lideratge.
