o bring science to the citizens of Barcelona during a day of basic scientific experiments, a poster exhibition, a scientific cafe and guided visits of the building.

This idea came from the “Science Meets Society” group, and became the PRBB Open Day last October. The communication departments of the PRBB and the different centres at the park, a hundred volunteers and the curiosity of some 2,000 visitors helped to create the magic.

Our ambition is to improve it year after year. And here we are: on Saturday, October 3, the 2nd edition of the PRBB Open Day will take place. As this year marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, special attention will be given to his theory of evolution and its place in current research.

Get ready for October 3 and help us to make this second edition bigger and better!

3 d’octubre: 2a Jornada de Portes Obertes del PRBB ortar la ciència als ciutadans de Barcelona durant una jornada d’experiments, pòsters, un cafè científic i visites dins de l’edifici. Aquesta idea va sorgir del grup «Science Meets Society» i va acabar essent la Jornada de Portes Obertes del PRBB l’octubre passat, gràcies als departaments de comunicació del PRBB i dels diferents centres, a la col·laboració de més d’un centenar de voluntaris i a la curiositat d’uns 2.000 visitants.

Ara tenim l’ambició de repetir-ho, i millorar-ho any rere any. I ja quasi bé hi som: el dissabte 3 d’octubre tindrà lloc la segona Jornada de Portes Obertes del PRBB. Enguany i, coincidint amb el dos-cents aniversari del naixement de Darwin, s’oferiran activitats especialment dissenyades per donar a conèixer al públic la seva teoria de l’evolució i la rellevància d’aquesta teoria en el marc actual de la recerca.

Reserveu-vos doncs el 3 d’octubre i ajudeu-nos a que aquesta segona edició sigui encara més gran i millor!

Eva Nebot a Fundació Pasqual Maragall per a la Recerca sobre l’Alzheimer es va traslladar al juny al local del PRBB situat a la plaça Darwin, iniciant així una nova etapa com un centre més del parc.

La Fundació va néixer fa un any, a iniciativa de l’expresident de la Generalitat i amb la finalitat d’impulsar un projecte científic d’excel·lència en l’àmbit de l’Alzheimer, l'envelliment i les malalties neurodegeneratives.

Tal com ell mateix va afirmar el 2007, quan va fer públic que li havien diagnosticat Alzheimer: «vull ajudar a derrotar aquesta malaltia, personalment i col·lec-

tivament, enlloc està escrit que sigui invencible».

La Fundació, que ha signat un conveni mitjançant el qual es vincula a la UPF, està dirigida per Jordi Camí, també director del PRBB, i està posant en marxa un projecte científic molt ambiciós, suportat majoritàriament pel sector privat. El pla és aixecar un nou centre de recerca amb projectes de caire poc convencional, que inclouria recursos de transferència, assistencials i diagnòstics, així com una plataforma de neuroimatge. «No se m’acut un emplaçament millor des d’on fer realitat la nostra aposta per la ciència, la gent jove i els projectes innovadors i agosarats», va afirmar Maragall en estrenar el nou local al PRBB.

The Pasqual Maragall Foundation joins the PRBB he “Pasqual Maragall Foundation for Alzheimer Research” moved to the PRBB offices at the Darwin square in June, starting a period as an additional centre at the park.

The Foundation was born a year ago by initiative of the ex-president of the Catalan government, with the aim of fostering a scientific project of excellence in the field of Alzheimer, ageing and neurodegenerative diseases. In 2007, when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer, Maragall had declared: «I want to help to defeat this illness, in both a personal and a collective way. It is nowhere written that it has to be unbeatable».

The Foundation, which has signed an agreement to be associated to the UPF, is directed

by Jordi Camí, also director of the PRBB. He is working to set up a very ambitious scientific project, which will be supported mostly by the private sector. The plan is to build a new research centre for unconventional projects, which would also include other resources such as technology transfer, a diagnostic unit, a residence and a neuroimaging platform.

When opening the new offices at the PRBB, Maragall said: “I cannot think of a better location from where to make a reality our bet for science, young people and daring innovative projects.” 쐽

Científics demostren el potencial terapèutic de les cèl·lules mare pluripotents induïdes Ángel Raya studis recents han demostrat que la reprogramació induïda pot generar cèl·lules mare pluripotents induïdes (iPS) específiques per a una malaltia. Aquestes cèl·lules ofereixen una oportunitat sense precedents per investigar els mecanismes de la malaltia i per testar compostos terapèutics en models experimentals de cèl·lules humanes. Un equip d’investigadors del CMRB liderats per Ángel Raya ha demostrat que les cèl·lules iPS també tenen potencial terapèutic per corregir una determinada malaltia quan es combina la teràpia gènica amb la reprogramació induïda.

Els científics van escollir l’anèmia de Fanconi (FA), una rara malaltia genètica. Les cèl·lules obtingudes de la pell dels pacients van ser corregides genèticament i després reprogramades per tal de ser pluripotents, generant així iPS específiques del pacient. Aquestes cèl·lules iPS corregides eren indistingibles de les cèl·lules mare embrionàries, i eren capaces de diferenciar-se en progenitors hematopoètics lliures de la malaltia.

Aquests estudis, dirigits per Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte i publicats a l’edició de juny de la revista Nature, es van fer en collaboració amb els laboratoris de Juan Bueren (CIEMAT, Madrid) i Jordi Surralles (UAB, Barcelona), i proporcionen la primera

prova de concepte que la tecnologia de cèl·lules iPS es pot utilitzar per generar cèl·lules corregides, específiques de pacients, amb potencial per a aplicacions de teràpies cel·lulars.

Scientists show the therapeutic potential of disease-specific iPS cells ecent studies have shown that induced reprogramming can be used to generate disease-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), which would offer unprecedented opportunities to investigate disease mechanisms and to screen therapeutic compounds in human disease cell models. A team of researchers at the CMRB led

by Ángel Raya has recently shown that these iPS cells also have the therapeutic potential to correct a specific disease when combining gene therapy with induced reprogramming.

The scientists chose Fanconi anemia (FA), a rare genetic disease. Patients’ cells obtained from skin biopsies were genetically

corrected and then were reprogrammed to pluripotency to generate patient-specific iPS cell lines. These corrected iPS cells were indistinguishable from human embryonic stem (ES) cells and were able to differentiate into multilineage hematopoietic progenitors that were disease-free.

These studies, directed by Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte and published in the June issue of Nature, were done in collaboration with the laboratories of Juan Bueren (CIEMAT, Madrid) and Jordi Surralles (UAB, Barcelona), and provide the first proof-of-concept that iPS cell technology can be used to generate disease-corrected, patient-specific cells with potential value for cell therapy applications 쐽

Els ARN petits, involucrats en l’splicing Núria Pérez n estudi liderat per la Universitat de Buenos Aires, en col·laboració amb el grup d’Eduardo Eyras del GRIB (IMIM-UPF) i publicat a Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, ha revelat que els ARN petits poden regular l’splicing alternatiu, un mecanisme de modificació de l’ARN missatger que genera diversitat proteica.

Ja se sabia que ARNs petits, d’uns 21-22 nucleòtids de llargada, podien regular l’expressió de gens tant a través del silenciament genètic transcripcional (TGS), unint-se a la regió promotora del gen, com del silenciament

genètic postranscripcional (PTGS), unint-se al trànscrit madur.

En aquest treball, emmarcat dins la Xarxa Europea d’Excellència EURASNET, els científics han descobert que, sorprenentment, els ARNs petits poden utilitzar el mecanisme TGS també per regular l’splicing. Això s’ha anomenat splicing alternatiu mediat per TGS (TGS-AS).

Una comparació dels gens afectats pel TGS-AS amb d’altres que no ho estan ha revelat que la longitud dels introns és rellevant. A més, una anàlisi de tot el genoma humà evidencia que aquest mecanisme podria ser molt freqüent.

Small RNAs linked to splicing

study lead from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, in collaboration with the group

of Eduardo Eyras at the GRIB (IMIM-UPF) and published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, has revealed that small RNAs can regulate alternative splicing, a mechanism that modifies mRNAs generating protein diversity.

Scientists already knew that small RNAs 21-22 nucleotides long could regulate the expression of genes both by transcriptional gene silencing (TGS), in which they bind to the promoter region of the gene, or by posttranscriptional gene silencing (PTGS), in which they bind the mature transcript.

In this study, done within the European Network of Excellence EURASNET, the scientists have

discovered that, surprisingly, the small RNAs can use the TGS mechanism also to regulate mRNA splicing. They called this mechanism transcriptional gene silencing-mediated alternative splicing (TGS-AS).

A comparison of the genes affected by TGS-AS with others that aren’t has revealed that the length of introns is relevant. An analysis of the human genome suggests that this mechanism could be very frequent.

“Since there are hereditary diseases and some types of cancer that have their origin in mutations that affect splicing, these small RNAs could represent a new therapeutical tool”, concludes Eyras 쐽

Científics de l’IMIM desenvolupen el primer xip d’ADN per a la detecció del risc cardiovascular Rosa Manaut / Marta Calsina n grup de científics ha desenvolupat el primer xip d’ADN per determinar de forma més precisa el risc cardiovascular teòric a llarg termini. Aquest xip, anomenat Cardio inCode, incorpora 11 polimorfismes d’un sol nucleòtid (SNP) associats a risc d’infart.

A més, avalua més de 110 SNPs relacionats amb la predisposició a presentar els factors de risc cardiovascular clàssics com l’obesitat o la diabetes.

El xip és de fet un instrument per a la medicina personalitzada que integra la informació genètica, clínica i hàbits de vida del pacient, permetent així establir el risc cardiovascular de forma més precisa del que és possible actualment.

Segons Jaume Marrugat, de l’IMIM-Hospital del Mar, «el 85% dels esdeveniments cardiovasculars ocorren en individus classificats de risc baix i intermig segons les prediccions actuals».

La informació genètica que aporta Cardio inCode ajudarà a l’adopció de mesures terapèutiques i dietètiques, per tal de

minimitzar el risc futur d’esdeveniments cardiovasculars.

Cardio inCode és el resultat de la cooperació dels sectors públic i privat, concretament de l’IMIM-Hospital del Mar, la Universitat de Tufts (EUA), el Centre Nacional de Genotipat (node del CNIO) i les companyies Gendiag i Ferrer inCode.

risk. This chip, named Cardio inCode, incorporates 11 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that have been associated with hearth attack. It also evaluates more than 110 SNPs related to the predisposition of presenting the classical cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity.

The chip is a personalised medical device in which the clinical and genetic information of the patient is added to that of their habits, allowing to define a more precise cardiovascular risk than was possible until now.

According to Jaume Marrugat, from IMIM-Hospital de Mar, “the

precision of the current predictions is modest, since 85% of the cardiovascular events happen in subjects classified as being at low and intermediate risk”. The genetic information that Cardio inCode offers, will help to adopt therapeutic and dietetic measures with the goal of minimizing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the future.

Cardio inCode is the result of the cooperation of the private and public sectors, specifically of IMIM-Hospital del Mar, Tufts University (UEA), the National Genotyping Centre (node at the CNIO) and the biotech companies Gendiag and Ferrer inCode 쐽

JORDI ALONSO, CAP DEL GRUP DE RECERCA EN SERVEIS SANITARIS DE L’IMIM-HOSPITAL DEL MAR

«El gran repte en el camp de les malalties mentals és augmentar-ne el tractament i el control» Maruxa Martínez-Campos Quin és l’objectiu del projecte «World Mental Health (WMH) surveys»? roduir tres informes sobre salut mental enfocats en la càrrega a la societat (quanta gent pateix aquests trastorns i com són de discapacitants); la perspectiva del gènere; i les desigualtats socials. La idea és que aquests informes siguin útils a l’hora de dissenyar les polítiques de salut mental a Europa.

Qui participa en el projecte?

El projecte està codirigit per l’OMS i la universitat de Harvard. A més d’EUA i Mèxic hi ha 12 països europeus que coordinem des de l’IMIM. També hi ha un coordinador asiàtic i un llatinoamericà, i participen alguns països africans i d’Orient Mitjà.

Com es fa la recollida de dades?

Es fan entrevistes a casa després d’haver escollit mostres representatives de la població adulta. Són entrevistes molt completes, de fins a 4.000 preguntes, i amb consentiment informat. A Espanya ja s’han entrevistat 6.000 individus i ara es recol·lectarà informació de més persones a qui se’ls recollirà també mostres biològiques per a futurs estudis genètics. Des de l’IMIM fem totes les anàlisis europees, així com totes les anàlisis a nivell mundial pel que fa a la càrrega dels trastorns per a la societat. Això comporta unes 113.000 entrevistes de 22 països.

Quines malalties s’estudien?

Els anomenats «trastorns mentals comuns», com els trastorns d’ansietat (ansietat generalitzada; crisis d’angoixa; fòbies, estrès posttraumàtic), els trastorns de l’estat d’ànim (depressió, trastorns bipolars), el trastorn per abús d’alcohol o substàncies, i d’altres trastorns com el dèficit d’atenció, la hiperactivitat, etc.

També s’analitza l’efecte de les malalties físiques declarades.

Són molt freqüents aquests trastorns?

Jordi Alonso (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) ens parla d’aquest ambiciós projecte.

On February 3 and 4, 2009, European experts met at the PRBB to set the bases of the analysis of the challenges that mental disorders represent for public health in Europe. This is the goal of the WMH project (www.hcp.med.harvard.edu/whm), funded by the European Commission and coordinated by IMIM in Europe. On July 2009, the second WMH meeting will take place in Boston.

Jordi Alonso (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) tells us about this ambitious project. ropa hi ha la meitat de prevalença que als EUA. Un 25% de la població europea ha patit algun d’aquests trastorns al llarg de la seva vida, i un 13,4% ha tingut un episodi de depressió major. Pel que fa a la càrrega social, l’OMS preveu que la depressió unipolar serà al 2020 un dels problemes de salut més rellevants a nivell mundial.

Quin és el major repte dins el món dels trastorns mentals?

Un 12% d’individus a Europa tenen trastorns mentals en un moment donat.

D’aquests només el 25% van als serveis sanitaris, i només la meitat d’aquests reben un correcte tractament. A nosaltres ens preocupa aquesta clara infrautilització dels serveis sanitaris per part de les persones amb trastorns mentals mentre que, per altra banda, la despesa de psicofàrmacs és molt alta, i probablement inadequada.

“The big challenge of mental illnesses is to increase their treatment and control” What is the goal of the “World Mental Health (WMH) project survey”? o generate three repor ts about mental health disorders focused on: their weight on society (how many people suffer these disorders and how disabling they are); the perspective of gender; and the social inequalities.

These reports should be useful to design mental health policies in Europe.

Who participates in the project?

The project is co-directed by the WHO and Harvard University and apart from the US and Mexico it includes 12 european countries coordinated by IMIM. There is an Asian and a South-American coordinator, and some African and Middle East countries also participate.

How are the data recollected?

After choosing representative samples of the adult population, some interviews are done. The interviews are very complete, with up to 4,000 questions, and informed consent is needed. In Spain 6,000 subjects have already been interviewed and information, as well as biological samples, of more people are being collected for future genetic studies.

From the IMIM we do all the European analyses, as well as the worldwide analyses on the social weight of mental health disorders. This means 113,000 interviews from 22 countries.

What disorders are studied?

We study the “common mental disorders”, such as anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, anguish crisis, phobias, posttraumatic stress), mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), abuse of alcohol and other substances and others such as the attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity.

The effect of physical illnesses is also taken into account.

Are these disorders very frequent?

There is a lot of variety, but in general in Europe there is half the prevalence than in the US. About 25% of the people in Europe have suffered one of these disorders in their lifetime, and about 13.4% have had a major episode of depression. Regarding their social weight the WHO foresees that in 2020, unipolar depression will be one of the most relevant health problems in the world.

What is the biggest challenge dealing with mental health?

About 12% of the population in Europe have a mental disorder at a specific moment. Only 25% of them will turn to the medical services and then only half will receive the correct treatment. We worry about this clear underutilisation of the medical services by people with mental disorders, while the expense in psycho pharmaceutical medicines is very high, and its use probably inadequate 쐽

menors de 15 anys augmentarà un 70%.

Albert Goday, endocrinòleg de l’Hospital del Mar i investigador de l’IMIM, i Conxa Castell, del Departament de Salut de la Generalitat de Catalunya, són els únics par ticipants de l’Estat Espanyol en aquest estudi que s’ha realitzat sota el paraigua de l’EURODIAB. A Catalunya la diabetis tipus 1 afecta a 13 de cada 100.000 persones i l’augment dels casos és el més baix de l’estudi.

JUAN VALCÁRCEL, GRUP DE REGULACIÓ DEL PROCESSAMENT ALTERNATIU DE PRECURSORS DE L’ARN (CRG)

«Em conformaria amb entendre la lògica molecular d’un sol cas d’splicing» Maruxa Martínez-Campos a 30 anys que s’estudia l’splicing alternatiu (AS en anglès), i s’estima que es produeix en el 95% dels gens humans. Però tot i que es coneixen molts exemples on aquest mecanisme té un paper fonamental, com en el cas de la determinació del sexe en Drosophila, encara no se sap fins a quin punt és biològicament rellevant en la majoria dels casos. Ho diu Juan Valcárcel, cap del grup de regulació de l’splicing del CRG. L’AS permet que un mateix missatger d’ARN es processi de formes alternatives segons el teixit o la situació, donant lloc a proteïnes diferents. Funciona amb la maquinària més complexa de la cèl·lula, formada per 200 proteïnes basals i altres 200 reguladores. El grup de Valcárcel, que va arribar al CRG l’any 2002 i està format per 11 persones, intenta entendre la regulació d’aquesta maquinària. Treballen des de la perspectiva bioquímica i amb cultius de cèllules humanes, fins amb models de Drosophila i de ratolí. L’especialitat del grup són els estudis dins un tub d’assaig en el qual l’adició d’un determinat factor modifica l’splicing. També fan estudis genòmics amb arrays (o microxips) d’AS, alguns d’ells desenvolupats pel propi grup.

Els projectes en els que treballen són molts i variats. Un exemple és l’estudi de l’AS del receptor de Fas el qual, segons el tipus d’splicing, pot donar lloc a la mort cel·lular o protegir contra aquesta. Un altre projecte pretén estudiar la relació entre la cromatina i l’splicing en col·laboració amb els grups de Roderic Guigó i de Miguel Beato (CRG). En el futur treballaran també amb Ben Lehner (CRG) per estudiar reguladors fisiològics d’AS en C.elegans. «Hi ha moltes coses a estudiar, però em conformaria amb entendre la lògica molecular d’un sol cas», somnia Valcárcel. «Crec que per entendre la importància biològica de l’AS s’haurien de fer “knock-outs” d’isoformes específiques», continua.

Almenys un 15% de les malalties genètiques estan causades per mutacions que afecten l’splicing. Però segons diu Valcárcel el percentatge podria ser més gran: «S’han vist mutacions que no im-

pliquen directament els senyals d’splicing sinó que són a dins dels exons, però tot i així afecten el mecanisme d’splicing».

A més, canvis en la proporció d’AS en gens crucials s’han vist implicats en el pas d’alguns tumors benignes a malignes. «En col·laboració amb Guigó i Joan Albanell (IMIM) estem intentant caracteritzar canvis d’AS que tenen lloc al càncer de pit.

La raó és que càncers indistingibles a nivell histològic responen a la quimioteràpia de forma diferent. Volem veure si els marcadors d’AS podrien distingir-los», comenta Valcárcel.

A més el biòleg gallec és el vicecoordinador del consorci EURASNET, en el que hi participen 41 laboratoris de tota Europa.

L’objectiu és explorar quines tecnologies són més eficaces per a l’estudi de l’AS i, sobretot, quines podrien ser les possibles teràpies basades en l’splicing.

En efecte, l’splicing està passant de ser un mecanisme d’interès només per als biòlegs moleculars a tenir un gran potencial a nivell diagnòstic i terapèutic.

Per exemple, un dels grups que formen part del consorci i que ha desenvolupat petites molècules que modifiquen l’AS en el virus de la SIDA ha demostrat que amb aquestes és possible reduir la producció del virus en models cel·lulars i de ratolí.

“I would be happy if I understood the molecular logic behind just one case of splicing” t’s been 30 years that alternative splicing (AS) is studied, and it is estimated that it takes place in 95% of human genes. But even though many examples are known in which this mechanism has an essential role, such as in Drosophila sex determination, it is still unknown to what point AS is biologically relevant in most cases, says Juan Valcárcel, head of the AS group at the CRG. AS allows for one mRNA to be processed in alternative ways, according to the tissue or the situation, and to give rise to different proteins. It works thanks to the most complex machinery that exists in the cell, formed by 200 basal proteins and another 200 regulators. The group of Valcárcel, which arrived to the CRG in 2002 and is composed by 11 people from 7 countries, tries to understand the regulation of this machinery. They study this at many levels: from the biochemistry perspective, with human cell cultures, to Drosophila and mice models. Their speciality is the study inside a test tube in which adding a specific factor can modify the splicing. They also do genomic studies using AS microarrays,

The projects they work on are many and very varied. One example is the AS of the Fas receptor gene. This can lead to cell death or protect against it, depending on what type of AS it is subject to. Another project aims to study the relationship between chromatin and splicing in collaboration with Roderic Guigó and Miguel Beato (CRG). In the future the group will also work with Ben Lehner (CRG) in the study of physiological regulators of AS in C.elegans.

“There are so many things to study, but I would be glad if I could understand the molecular logic of just one case of AS” dreams Valcárcel. “I believe that in order to understand the biological relevance of AS we should do knock-outs of specific isoforms”, he continues.

At least 15% of the genetic diseases are caused by mutations in splicing. But according to Valcárcel, the percentage could be higher: “We have found mutations that do not affect the splicing signals themselves, but are rather within the exon, and nevertheless they do affect splicing!”. Also, changes in the proportion of AS in crucial genes are implied in the transformation from some benign tumours to malign ones. “In collaboration with Guigó and Joan Albanell (IMIM) we are now trying to characterise changes in the AS that take place in breast cancer. The reason is that some breast cancers are undistinguishable at histological level, yet they respond to chemotherapy differently. We would like to see if there are some AS markers that could help us distinguish the two types”, explains Valcárcel.

This biologist from Galicia is also the vice-coordinator of the EURASNET consortium, in which 41 laboratories from all over Europe participate. The aim is to explore which technologies are most efficient for the study of splicing and, specially, which could be the possible therapies based on this mechanism.

Indeed, splicing is starting to be not just a mechanism of interest for molecular biologists, but a mechanism with great diagnostic and therapeutic potential. For example, one of the groups that belong to the consortium has developed small molecules that modify AS in HIV and reduce the virus production in cell cultures and in mice models 쐽

PIA COSMA, Monday July 27. Cosma, from the Telethon Institute for Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM) in Napols, Italy, is working on the characterization of sumf1 function, a gene responsible for the activation of all sulfatases. This gene is mutated in all patients analysed so far of Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency (MSD), a human inherited metabolic disorder. She is also studying and tr ying to find a therapy for Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPSII), a lysosomal storage disorder, by using the MPSII mouse model. Finally, she is also trying to identify the genes involved in cell reprogramming and analysing their interactions via network identification algorithms.

PILAR BLANCAFORT, Friday July 31. Blancafort, from the Department of Pharmacology of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the US, is studying the mechanisms of tumorigenesis and is applying genome-wide techniques to develop anti-cancer therapies. In particular, her research focuses on transcriptional regulation of gene expression during stem cell self-renewal and differentiation and during tumorigenesis. For this she designs artificial transcription factors (ATFs) and she investigates their ability to interfere with tumor cell regulatory programs. She was invited by Mark Isalan (CRG).

El CD ha estat una producció de la Fundació Catalana Síndrome de Down, ha comptat amb el suport de l’Institut de Cultura de l’Ajuntament de Barcelona i ha estat editat per Sello Autor (SGAE).

Com el lleopard va obtenir les seves taques?

Fyodor Kondrashov ots els éssers vius compartim la mateixa ascendència, que està reflectida a la nostra seqüència d’ADN. És en l’ADN on està escrita la nostra història i els biòlegs evolucionistes l’han estat utilitzant per desxifrar els secrets de l’origen i l’evolució de la vida.

Quan ja es va disposar de les primeres seqüències fa 40 anys, els investigadors van començar a desvetllar les propietats estructurals dels gens i a entendre la seva evolució. Curiosament, el coneixement que la moderna genòmica evolutiva ens està descobrint no és, de moment, conceptualment molt diferent al que els científics ja van començar a obtenir a través de les dades de gens individuals. Excepte que, sense tenir genomes complets, la nostra imatge del terreny de joc de l’evolució, el genoma, no podia ser tampoc completa: ara que les seqüències completes de diversos genomes han estat desxifrades, els científics veuen que hi ha encara molt per aprendre.

A través de les dades pregenòmiques ja se sabia que els gens i, de vegades, els genomes sencers, poden estar duplicats, que la interrupció de gens per introns pot donar lloc a vàries proteïnes diferents llegides a partir del mateix gen, i que els gens es poden transferir entre espècies. Però el que encara ens manca és comprendre com estan codificades

en el genoma les adaptacions de les diferents espècies. Quants canvis en l’ADN han estat necessaris i de quina mena per tal d’afavorir l’aparició d’agulles als cactus o de la intel·ligència en els humans? Més important encara, els investigadors encara han de desenvolupar una metodologia general per tal de ser capaços de respondre a aquestes preguntes. their evolution. Curiously, the knowledge that modern evolutionary genomics is uncovering is so far conceptually no different than what scientists began to understand from data on single genes. Except that, without whole genomes, our picture of the playing field of evolution, the genome, could never be complete: now that several whole genome sequences have been deciphered, scientists finally understand how much there is still to learn.

From pre-genomics data it was already known that genes and, sometimes, entire genomes, are duplicated, that the interruption of genes by introns can lead to several different proteins being read from the same gene and that genes can sometimes be transferred between different species. But what we still lack is the understanding of how adaptations of different species are encoded in the genome. How many changes and of what kind have occurred in the DNA to have led to the evolution of needles in a cactus or intelligence in humans? Most importantly, researchers have yet to develop a general approach to be able to ask these questions. The good news is that 150 years after Darwin’s “Origin of Species” the study of genomes has finally given us the first overview of the raw material of evolution, which holds the real answers to Kipling’s “Just so stories” questions of how the camel got his hump or the leopard his spots 쐽

Ania Liste (CMRB, Cuba) recomana: Moros y cristianos

Els darrers cafès científics, tot un èxit.

Qui pensaria que a l’interior de La Pedrera es parlaria de sistemes complexos o de creació de vida al laboratori? Els darrers cafès científics organitzats pel grup SmS del PRBB i recolzats pel CRG van tenir lloc el 9 de juny i l’1 de juliol, i van recollir preguntes molt interessants entorn a aquests temes per part d’una audiència d’allò més variada.

En el primer cafè, Ricard Solé, del laboratori de Sistemes Complexos de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) i Juli Peretó, de l’Institut Cavanilles de Biodiversitat i Biologia Evolutiva de la Universitat de València, van fer conèixer als assistents les similituds entre el comportament social de les formigues, els circuits electrònics i l’organització del genoma, així com van debatre sobre els papers de l’individu i la societat i es van deixar portar per la imaginació plantejant-se els límits ètics en la biologia moderna.

El cafè del juliol, titulat «Ciència & Ciència Ficció: On està el límit?», va comptar amb la participació de Luis Serrano, sotsdirector del CRG, i Miquel Barceló, de la UPC, que van parlar sobre com la realitat pot superar la ficció, tot discutint el teletransport o una píndola que podria solucionar tots els problemes mèdics.

ngredients: 450 gr d’arròs, 225 gr de «frijoles», 1 ceba gran, 1 pebrot verd, tres dents d’all, 1 fulla de llorer, 125 gr de llard, 1 copa d’oli d’oliva, 2 gots d’aigua, sal al gust.

Bulliu els frijoles (sense salar) amb suficient aigua fins que estiguin ben cuits. Prepareu el sofregit en oli calent amb el pebrot i la ceba tallats finets, l’all triturat, la sal i la llard tallada en bocins.

Escorreu els frijoles i guardeu 5 gots del líquid en el que s’han cuinat. Afegiu aquests i els dos gots d’aigua al sofregit, i afegiu-hi també els frijoles.

Quan comenci a bullir, afegiu-hi l’arròs passat per aigua, sal, i el llorer. Tapeu-ho i cuineu-ho a foc fort fins que els grans d’arròs comencin a obrir-se, llavors cuineu-ho a foc mitjà fins que estigui fet, i serviu.

Boil the beans (without salt) until well done in enough water so they will not cook

too dry. Prepare a sofrito (fried sauce) in hot oil with the finely chopped onion and sweet pepper, well crushed garlic with salt, and the pork fat cut in small trimmings.

Strain the beans and keep 5 cups of the liquid in which they were cooked.

Add these and the 2 cups of water to the fried sauce, and add also the beans.

When it begins to boil, add the washed rice, salt, and the bay leaf. Cover and cook over high heat until rice grains begin to open, and then cook over medium heat until it is well done, and serve 쐽

The latest scientific cafès, a great success. Who could imagine that inside “La Pedrera” someone could be talking about complex systems or the creation of life in

a laboratory? The last scientific cafès organised by “Science meets Society” and backed by the CRG took place on June 9 and July 1, and compiled very interesting questions about these topics from a varied audience.

On the first cafè, Ricard Solé, from the complex systems laboratory of the UPF and Juli Peretó, from the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of the Valencia University, explained the similarities that exist between the social behaviour of ants, electronic circuits and genome organization, discussed about the role of men and society, and offered their thoughts about the ethical limits in modern biology.

The cafè in July was hosted by Luis Serrano, sub-director of the CRG, and by Miquel Barceló, from the UPC, who talked about how reality can sometimes surpass fiction, by discussing teletransport or a pill that could solve all our medical problems 쐽

De les ombres a la llum seu estimat. La història ens ha demostrat que les dones artistes han quedat sovint sota una ombra incomodíssima. Luisa Botet i Mundí, (Cassà de la Selva, 1884) va ser una dona que va canviar rols, va dur la seva pintura al nivell més alt i va ser reconeguda internacionalment.

Al despatx del director de l’IMIM dos nens estan asseguts en un racó del camí, la nena mira un punt a l’horitzó mentre un nen adormit reposa sota el seu braç. La desesperació, l’esperança, són conceptes universals, podem deixar lliure la imaginació i el resultat serà el mateix: dos nens que pateixen. La universalitat de les interpretacions és el mecanisme que fa que les obres d’art perdurin en el temps. Podrien ser nens de la postguerra espanyola, podrien ser dos nens africans atrapats en un conflicte bèl·lic, o bé podrien ser Hansel i Gretel.

From shadows to light omen have not always had the freedom to express themselves, even though, according to Pliny the Elder, painting was a feminine invention: the daughter of the ceramicist Butades Sicyonius, draw the shadow of her lover on a wall. Luisa Botet i Mundí (Cassà de la Selva, 1884) was a woman who changed roles, she took her painting to the highest level and was recognised internationally.

Per això el dia 17 de setembre a les 6 de la tarda es farà a l’Auditori una presentació de totes les activitats que hi haurà durant la Jornada. Els organitzadors ens explicaran el programa, que inclou tallers i experiments que es faran a la Plaça Darwin, visites guiades a l’edifici, una exposició sobre Darwin, audiovisuals, simulacions amb ordinadors, la representació d’una obra sobre el debat d’Oxford per part del grup de teatre del PRBB, un cafè científic… Posteriorment hi haurà pica-pica a la terrassa. Vine, escolta i fes-te voluntari!
