Catching a buzz from water-saving succulents By Debbie Arrington, The Sacramento Bee (TNS) While working in her Folsom garden, Terri Tollette can get lost. She becomes singularly focused, not on her home’s spectacular view of the Sacramento Valley or impressive evergreens, but what grows beneath the trees — a vast array of succulents. “I lose track of time when I am working with them,” she said. “To me, that means I am very much in the moment and not thinking about anything else, which brings me joy.” After years of drought, all the extra moisture from record winter rains renewed beauty to many landscapes. The Tollette garden is a case in point. The former front lawn was replaced by water-wise This succulent basket is one of many hanging Buffalograss and Santa Barbara from Tollett’s fences. Her favorites are echeverias, aeoniums and kalanchoes. Planting them in containers allows her to move them around her garden until she finds just the right spot for each. Besides growing in more conventional pots, succulents peek out of cloth pockets or mosslined frames hung on fence posts. Like floral centerpieces or bouquets, they decorate tabletops. Studded with blooms, succulents form a “living picture” on a main wall. May or may not weather Though the gardens love the wet weather, one thing they could do without is the hail that came with it. If your plants were victims of the savage skies, take heart: it looks bad CAROL O’MEARA now but, CSU Extension depending on the plant, its maturity, and time left in the season for recovery, all may not be lost. Vegetable root crops, such as potatoes or beets, with destroyed leaves could send up new shoots, and you should still get a good crop. For leafy vegetables, be patient; give them at least a week to recuperate after the storm, and if there’s no sign of life, replant. Flowering annuals stripped of their leaves may not survive, and replanting now will ensure a good display later in summer. Yes, it’s

hard to pull up those babies, so if there are a few bits left on the stem and you’re feeling nurturing, clean them up and a give them a light application of fertilizer. They might recover. Severely shredded leaves on smaller perennials should be cut back to the ground, and if the leaves aren’t too damaged, leave them alone. Bleeding hearts and other perennials with soft stems that look reasonably unharmed should be cut back part way. Generally they’ll sprout new leaves along the stem at the junction between the old leaves and the stem. Work fertilizer in around any damaged perennials that are well established to give them a boost for

Now let’s look at the types:

CHAIN-LINK FENCE Perhaps not the most attractive choice of materials, chain-link will keep kids out of a pool area and pets in the yard. They do the trick, and at about $13 a foot, likely present your most affordable fencing option.

WOOD FENCE Maybe you want your kids or pets to be able to play safely in the yard, or would like to create some privacy. But are you on the fence about what material best suits your fence installation? First consider security, as some designs are better than others. Next, think about what fits your budget. Maintenance is also a concern, as not all fencing materials are created equal. Also, decide how much privacy and aesthetics matter. 4

A wooden fence may come nearly as cheap as chain-link, and can be installed in many styles. A wood fence can be great for keeping pets in and nosy neighbors out. The need for regular re-staining presents the one major downside. Also, a wood fence can become a feast for pests, such as termites.

VINYL FENCE A vinyl fence offers a great alternative to wood, because you can get

recovery. Those with firm stalks should be cut partially back. If they don’t sprout new leaves on existing stems, look for new stems pushing up from their roots. With all the excitement we’ve had lately, people tend to forget weather that affected plants a few weeks ago. But the plants don’t get over it so easily. Keep an eye out for damage from the freezing snow we had the last week of April; many leaves might be a tad black and crispy about the edges. Perennials, such as hostas, that suffered a setback from their leaves being frozen should have pushed new growth by now. Lingering effects of the dry winter continue to show up on lawns

a similar look with next to no maintenance. Another plus: hungry pests won’t see the synthetic vinyl composite material as dinner. Starting at about $30 per foot, though, vinyl fencing will increase your budget.

ALUMINUM FENCE If privacy isn’t a concern, but security of pets or children is, this might be a good choice for you. If you want a fence that gives a hint of the wrought-iron vibe at a lower cost, consider an aluminum fence. Aluminum typically costs more than a vinyl, wood or chain-link fence, though, at about $40 per foot.

WROUGHT-IRON FENCE Looking for a unique, classy vibe? A wrought-iron fence offers style in spades, but probably presents your most expensive option in terms of fencing materials. It may rust over time, but occasional paint touch-

as well. Giant dead blotches in an otherwise green lawn is topping the list for calls to our office, and in many cases, the culprits were grass mites. Hatched in October, mite numbers increased during winter during warm spells. Mites feed by rasping off the leaf surface and sucking up tender, interior cells; the damage appears as small yellow speckles on the grass blades. As feeding intensifies, the grass becomes straw colored and eventually dies, leaving large patches that don’t green up in spring. This damage is often misdiagnosed as winterkill or desiccation. If you’ve had mite damaged lawn, take a quick look to see if they’ve returned. Check the base of the plant for congregations of them during the day. ————————————— Colorado State University Extension, together with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, provides unbiased, research-based information about consumer and family issues, horticulture, natural resources, agriculture and 4-H youth development. INSTALLATION RULES AND MANNERS Do you have a homeowners association or other group that governs what you can build on your property? Check for any restrictions before installing that chain-link fence. It’s also good practice to inform neighbors with land adjacent to your property of any emerging plans you have for a fence project. Mom transfers property ownership to avoid Medicaid look-back rule - is it enough? By Ilyce Glink and Samuel J. Tamkin, Tribune Content Agency

Q

: Mom lives in Wisconsin. She has real estate assets of $60,000 (equity in her property), and a newly acquired pension from the death of my father of $3,200 per month. Over four years ago she took her name off her deed to her house and put her kids’ names on the deed. Was that the best path she could have taken in Wisconsin for the fiveyear look-back rule?

A

: What you’re really asking is whether your mom made the right decision in transferring ownership of her home to you and your siblings to avoid the five-year Medicaid look-back rule. That’s not an easy answer since there are a number of variables that go into it. If your mom is in good health

now and her health stays pretty good for the next several years, the assets she gave away over five years ago won’t be counted if she has to go into a nursing home or similar for Medicaid purposes. Here’s a bit of context: When you go into a nursing home, the government will want to see you spend your money first before paying your expenses. And, if you have a home, they will want you to sell your home and use those proceeds to pay the nursing home. You noted that your mom has equity in real estate assets of $60,000. We’re assuming that must be in other real estate, because if that equity is in the home, the home is no longer hers but yours and your siblings. (From the real estate side, since she no longer owns the home we can’t tell you if she is still entitled to real estate tax benefits for home-

owners in Wisconsin. In some states, when you transfer ownership of a home, you get socked with increases in real estate taxes and, worse, if you are not considered an owner living in your own home, you might even get taxed on that home as a second home at much higher real estate tax rates.) If the pension is the only thing left that your mom has to live on, those funds and any other income may be used for her care in a nursing home in the future. At issue here is what your mom’s wishes are and what you and your siblings are willing to do for your mom should she go into a nursing care facility or other care housing in the future. You need to evaluate what your mom’s needs are now and what they will be in the future. In some situations, the care facilities that would require you to deplete your assets first to ultimately end up being paid

by government funds may not be the facilities you’d want your mom to stay in. You should talk with your mom about what assets she still owns, what you and your siblings are willing to do for her and then talk to an estate planning attorney to go over your questions and make any necessary arrangements. service and care, no matter the size of your project. A-Concrete is Colorado’s most professional concrete contractor, and they have the projects to prove it. Seven skilled concrete crews maintain a busy schedule throughout the year. Using special equipment and thermal ground heaters, they can pour quality concrete through the winter months as well. If it’s not snowing, A-Concrete is pouring. When they’re not creating a new residential patio or custom sidewalk, they’re installing a commercial slab or 70,000 square foot parking lot. The company crews have also been very busy helping to construct the new Johnstown Plaza. The center’s developer, Carson Development, has partnered with A-Concrete on past projects as well. “Our crews are awesome,” says A-Concrete’s Crystal Bidwell. “They strive to provide consumers with the most advance application processes available. We are always educating ourselves, always looking for new ways to stay on the forefront of the industry and be competitive.” A-Concrete Inc. is fully licensed and insured, for your peace of mind. surprised to discover what’s new. “First of all,” Bidwell says, “concrete isn’t just flat and gray any more. It’s available in a wide range of color and shades, and in finishes that look like natural slate, flagstone or brick.” Colored concrete is the perfect addition to any project, whether highlighting a custom stamped surface or matching the colors of your natural landscape. A sealant is added at the end of the process to bring out the highlights and dimension of the stamped concrete. With proper care, concrete will long outlast an actual stone surface, which can move and buckle over time, Bidwell explains. Doing the job right starts from the ground up. A-Concrete packs the soil correctly before starting to pour. Rebar adds support across long spans of concrete, using recognized industry standards to ensure strength. Crews are typically able to complete your entire project in one day, from removing the old concrete to pouring your new slab and completing custom surface treatments. You’ll enjoy the quality of custom

concrete, without the wait. A-Concrete Inc. is a close partner with Johnstown Ready Mix Concrete where a new product is being added to help resist against “spalling” — often referred to as flaking. This can be caused by chemicals or the freeze and thaw process in the winter. The additive, called AE3, made by Sika, will extend the warranty against spalling, giving homeowners added protection for their outdoor concrete projects. A whole lot of the Colorado lifestyle is lived outdoors, and A-Concrete offers many creative ideas for adding exceptional outdoor kitchens, hot tub, fire pit or other amenities. Bring your outdoor living area to life with A-Concrete. Sunny days are also the time to add or renew the sealer on your existing concrete, to help fight damage during fall and winter months. “One thing I really want homeowners to know,” Crystal Bidwell says. “Redoing a patio or driveway is much more affordable than you may expect. 25 things to get rid of when you’re bored at home

Even if you only have five to 10 minutes to spare, there are a few things you can toss to make your life a lot more organized and efficient. (Dreamstime)

moments at home — scrolling through Instagram, looking for something to watch on Netflix or flipping through an old magazine or newspaper. These moments might be short and fleeting, but that’s no reason not to make the most of them. Even if you only have five to 10 minutes to spare — maybe while procrastinating before getting ready for an event or waiting to be tired enough to go to sleep — there are a few things you can toss to make your life a lot more organized and efficient. We tapped organizational expert and author Barbara Reich to guide us through the areas of our home that could use a little decluttering. Out with the old, and in with the new — toss these 25 things today and treat yourself to something good.

LIVING ROOM In the living room, old tchotchkes and mementos may be cluttering your shelves. Your cupboards may be overflowing with unused board games (or even worse, cassette tapes). Put on

BEDROOM Our closets are periodically in need of a good cleanup — but there are other areas of the bedroom that could use some decluttering too: excess bedding in the linen closet or mismatched items in the jewelry box, for example. Throw on some tunes before this clean-out.

How to pick the best art for your home

An oversized piece of art helps anchor this kitchen seating area. (Andrew Federico/TNS)

By Cathy Hobbs, Tribune News Service (TNS) Artwork in many spaces can make a wow factor. Whether the desire is to create a focal point, add color or even texture, artwork can be used to improve nearly any space. In many instances, the artwork’s size can play

a key role in creating a successful installation. When looking for ways to use artwork of different sizes and shapes, here are some top Design Recipes tips. 1. Hang your artwork so the center point of the artwork is approximately 5 feet from the finished floor. Most

people hang their artwork too high. 2. Experiment with creating a diptych or triptych using an identical piece of art. This visual technique is a popular trick of interior designers looking to create art in a series. 3. Use oversized pieces of art in spaces with high ceilings. 4. When possible, try to add mirrors opposite some of your statement art pieces to further help your artwork stand out. 5. Pay attention to color. Artwork is such a wonderful way to introduce color and texture. 6. Use smaller pieces of art in spaces such as bathrooms and kitchens. These are often forgotten and overlooked spaces where cheery artwork can go a long way. 7. Look for artwork in various shapes and sizes. Long, thin pieces art can work well over beds, while rectangular- (40 by 50 inches is a popular size) and square-shaped pieces (40 by 40 inches is a popular size) of art can work well as standalone pieces or above large statement furniture pieces

such as consoles and sofas. 8. Be sure not to select artwork that is too big or too small. Artwork should be roughly two-thirds the size of the object below it. 9. When purchasing artwork, ask that it be double wired so that you have the flexibility of hanging it horizontally or vertically as far as orientation. 10. Consider hanging smaller pieces of art as sets or groupings, as this tends to be more visually appealing, as opposed to randomly hung small artwork that can create visual clutter.
