Start the Season with Your Winter Passport. Downtown Longmont’s popular Winter Passport program enters its eighth year this season, sprinkling extra merriment for shoppers and local businesses alike. Here’s how it works: 1.

Pick up a sticker sheet (passport) at any participating Downtown business as listed on the Downtown Longmont website, downtownlongmont.com

Collect stickers for your purchases at participating businesses.

Once you’ve filled a full page of ten stickers, drop the passport with your information in the box located at St. Stephen’s Plaza, 320 Main St., or at High Country Bank. Drawings for Downtown Gift Cards and other prizes from local businesses will be held throughout the holiday season, culminating with a grand prize drawing in January.

he holiday shopping season doesn’t have to mean scrolling through endless, faceless online retailers or navigating crowded big-box stores.

At the Boulder County Farmers Markets’ Winter Market, a different kind of shopping experience awaits – one where every purchase comes with a story, every product reflects Colorado’s landscape and every transaction supports a neighbor’s dream.

The vendors at Winter Market aren’t just selling products – they’re sharing a piece of themselves. According to Frankie Ryder, director of marketing for Boulder County Farmers Markets, every business must be Colorado-based, and every product must be made here, too. s the year winds down and the holiday season approaches, many of us find ourselves juggling a whirlwind of tasks, from gift shopping and meal planning to managing family dynamics and social commitments. While the holidays are meant to be a time of joy, the pressures often lead to stress, overwhelm and burnout.

That’s where mindfulness comes in.

By embracing present-moment awareness and adopting simple self-care practices, we can reduce holiday stress and cultivate a sense of calm amid the chaos. In this article, we’ll share expert tips for finding harmony during the end-of-year celebrations – helping you nurture peace of mind, strengthen connections and make the most of this special time of year.

“When stress creeps in, the breath is your most accessible tool,” says Nicole Wienholt, who co-owns Longmont’s Yoga Pod with her husband, Gerry. “Conscious breathing not only calms the nervous system but also brings mindfulness to the present moment – and you can do it anywhere.”

Ocean breathing, also known as ujjayi pranayama, regulates the body by using a gentle constriction in the back of the throat to create a soft, audible sound similar to ocean waves. Gerry Wienholt explains that it’s as simple as “inhaling and exhaling slowly through the nose while making a ‘whooshing’ sound, which slows your breathing and signals

your body to relax.” This kind of intentional breathing focuses the mind and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and promoting relaxation throughout the body.

Conscious breathing is just one tool in the toolbox that yoga practitioners use to ease anxiety and relieve stress. At Yoga Pod, breathwork is combined with movement and supportive group classes, allowing students to slow down, be present and build meaningful connections with others.

“Our classes start early in the morning and go all day long, so people don’t have to worry

about scheduling ‘one more thing’ during the holidays, and it’s really something you can do for yourself. We get so focused on other people, but our classes are an opportunity to let it all go and focus on your own needs for an hour,” says Nicole.

While yoga helps release tension through movement and mindful breathing, Bruce Frantzis believes that true balance also comes from turning inward. Frantzis is a Taoist Lineage Master with more than 40 years of experience in Eastern healing systems, and he owns and operates Energy Arts in Longmont.

By learning to let go of constant mental noise, he believes practitioners can deepen their sense of peace and strengthen their ability to respond to stress with clarity and calm.

“You can’t change life,” says Frantzis, “but you can change the way you deal with the things life brings to you.”

If you can find a way for your mind to go quiet, you won’t feel so stressed,” he says. By practicing mindfulness or meditation to pause these inner narratives, Frantzis explains that you can create space to respond with calm awareness rather than reacting out of habit, making it easier to stay centered and enjoy meaningful connections during the season.

Holiday Joy with handmade wooden toys

T

here is nothing quite like the joy of receiving a new toy at the holidays.

Those memories of unwrapping something special are memories that live in the mind, even in adult years.

Since 2010, the Kiwanis Club of Longmont has worked to create that seasonal magic for local children with its signature project – Toys for Kids. The Toys for Kids project pays homage to the Algonquian Native American language translation of Kiwanis to “we build,” by hand-building toys for children.

What once began as a project where individual members made toys one by one 28 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

in their own homes has grown to a point where Kiwanis members, high school student volunteers and local woodworkers come together to assemble thousands of toys with love yearly. “This giving and service to children in need is the spirit we all carry in us, and this project exemplifies our every wish for happiness and comfort to every child in some small way,” said Candi Hayes, board member and public relations coordinator for the Longmont chapter.

Through the program, the club helps serve its mission of serving the children of the world who need us the most. “Our signature project has had a major impact, showcasing the knowledge of our members’ woodworking skills combined with the desire to serve the

children of Boulder County, including the state of Colorado and some international regions of the world,” said Hayes.

Yearly holiday order requests range from 25 to 1,000 wooden toys from various local agencies, including Bed In A Bag, Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Sister Carmen, CASA Voices for Children, Salud Clinic, Child Protection Program and Salvation Army. “Our list of orders grows yearly because our members find new places in need, and the places we serve now give us prospects,” said Hayes.

Recognized as one of the Kiwanis’ Top Ten Projects in the World, toy making is a year-long process in the Toy Factory in donated space above Mountain View Welding in Longmont.

“Our club is unique because we have a special bond together with a mutual understanding of how important this project is, which brings us all together to complete the massive wooden toy delivery in November and December,” said Hayes. “The project is a year-long commitment to meet the toy orders that are placed by many agencies and groups who serve children in need.”

Like clockwork, the factory comes alive every Thursday as the toy makers set to work, ensuring each unique toy bears the Kiwanis trademark stamp on the bottom.

“Every Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock, 5 to 9 volunteers gather for 2 to 3 hours to make toys,” said Marvin Van Peursem, coordinator for the Toy Project. “ We have always had loyal non-Kiwanis members volunteer as toy makers, which continues to amaze me. We don’t start and stop. We are always just making toys.”

“As a kid, I started making my own toys during World War II when, because of the war effort, few toys were available,” said Van Peursem.

“My Dad taught me how to solder metal and use a power drill after electricity arrived at our farm. Little wood cheese boxes, used metal roller skate wheels and horse harness pieces were used.”

Wood is repurposed from local furniture builders and construction sites, consisting of small pieces that these businesses cannot use.

“Our handcrafted toys need wheels and axles, which we purchase,” said Van Peursem. “For needed funds, we attend a few family craft

shows selling our toys. This is where we get to watch kids play with our toys and better learn what works and what does not.”

While the children simply know the club as “Santa,” the impact is evident in the expressions of adults when the handcrafted toys are dropped off at various agencies and nonprofits. “The gratitude which we receive when the toys are dropped off to the many adults who are tirelessly operating these agencies, group homes and organizations is more than enough,” said Hayes. “These folks are the true givers to the children and families in need. If our small handmade wooden toys help in any way to bring joy to the children who are going through a hard time, sickness, sadness, any crisis in their young life, or just need a small gift, this is what matters the most to every member of our Kiwanis Club.”

From Holiday Cheer to Everyday Meals Inside Community Food Share’s 303 Sustainers

group of monthly donors turned their holiday goodwill into a yearlong gift that helps sustain their local food bank with fresh, healthy meals.

More than 1,000 303 Sustainers donors support the Community Food Share food bank, which serves Boulder and Broomfield counties by distributing approximately 27,000 meals daily.

“The majority of fundraising is done in November and December when people think about the need for food when it’s cold out and they’re celebrating with their families,” said Kim Da Silva, CEO of Community Food Share in Louisville. “This helps us sustain our organization by bringing in funding yearround, not just during the holidays when people are thinking about it.”

The 303 Sustainers club was established in 2018 as a means to secure a more reliable funding source through monthly, quarterly or semi-annual donations, with an initial list of 179 donors. Sustainers donate by sending regular checks or visiting Community Food Share’s website, communityfoodshare.org/ recurring-donations, to access the Gift Service Center, where they can create an account and designate a gift amount with automatic credit card deductions.

“It’s a fun name for our monthly giving club,” Da Silva said, adding that the name is based on the state’s 303 area code. “It’s a great opportunity to be part of something bigger with those who think like you do and want to support the community like you do.” Donors can make a difference without even thinking about it, as they make regular payments while also receiving early-bird invitations to special events and an exclusive 303 Sustainers donor reception. The payments help Community Food Share plan funding opportunities as it

looks to the year ahead, identifying needs through an evaluation of income and expenses – this year, its budget is approximately $7 million.

Community Food Share, founded in 1981, is a Feeding America food bank, which has 250 food banks nationwide, with five of these located in Colorado, collectively forming Feeding Colorado. At that time, Community Food Share’s partner agency, the Emergency Family Assistance Association, a family resource center in Boulder, distributed food among its other services and needed an

independent food bank to procure and amass food.

Now, Community Food Share partners with 45 agencies in Boulder and Broomfield counties that offer food programs, food banks, or pantries, serving approximately 60,000 individuals. The nonprofit distributes 13.3 million pounds of food a year, with 3 million pounds donated directly in Longmont.

The food the Community Food Share procures comes from multiple sources,

including local grocers, national retailers, local farms, food drives and government entities.

Eighty percent of the food is donated, and the remaining 20% is purchased or provided by the government through federal food programs.

Seventy percent of the food goes to Community Food Share’s partner agencies, and 30% to its on-site food pantry, mobile food pantries, and Blue Spruce Neighbors program.

Blue Spruce Neighbors is a grocery drop-off program for home-bound seniors aged 60 and older. In Longmont, volunteers set up at the

Community Food Share’s on-site food pantry is located at its headquarters in a 58,000-square-foot warehouse space, 2,000 square feet of which are dedicated to the pantry. The pantry is set up like a grocery store, where program participants can choose from fresh produce, dairy, meat, bakery and grocery items every week during open hours, from Wednesday to Friday.

“Ours is called a shopping pantry, when individuals come to our pantry and are given a grocery cart and can select what’s best for themselves and their families,” Da Silva said.

Community Food Share operates four regular mobile pantries, including two in Longmont, one in Boulder and one in Broomfield, serving those with transportation challenges, conflicting work schedules or other barriers to accessing the on-site food pantry.

There are also pop-up pantries at sites where there aren’t programs or the need is greater than what the partner agencies can handle.

“Food is a basic human need,” Da Silva said.

“Communities are thriving, safer, happier communities when they are well-fed. And food is more than just calories. Food is tradition.

Food is culture. Food is conversation. It’s what brings people together.”

The venue is decorated with holiday-themed lighting, immersive table settings and seasonal touches. With 28,000 square feet of space to work with, Winner’s Circle has ample room to accommodate multiple groups and events, ranging from 10 to 500 people. Special events can also be customized with personalized decorations, entertainment options and holiday flair. Culinary options range from casual fare such as hot dogs to premium selections like prime rib, as well as daily smoked barbecue from the in-house smoker.

Indeed, Winner’s Circle is a great place for all ages. “The Den is meant to feel like a home away from home,” said Liz Raffensperger. “It is decorated with art and items from the owner’s childhood home and is the perfect place for gathering with friends, colleagues or family.”

The Den offers buyouts of the bar area on weekdays for up to 50 people. This special event can include a buffet dinner or just cocktails and appetizers. For smaller, more intimate gatherings, the back “Den” room holds up to 12 guests. The chef is happy to

accommodate special menu requests for buyouts, Raffensperger said.

The restaurant decorates for the holidays with a tree and all the trimmings, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the establishment. Reservations for groups up to eight can be made online; for larger party inquiries, contact the restaurant. The Den is closed from Nov. 27 to 30 and from Dec. 24 to 28. Reservations for buyouts are recommended several weeks in advance.

Special pre-show food and drink tickets are available, but limited, for Solstice by Candlelight.

Other shows also happen regularly at Fiske, such as the weekly Flashback at Fiske, which

celebrates the planetarium’s 50th anniversary.

This “laser show for the decades” encompasses more than 15 bands and spans 50 years of artistic laser and liquid sky wizardry. A show like that will be a holiday event that family and friends will remember for years to come.

Based in Longmont for 10 years, the family-owned business is renowned as the premier destination in town for wine, beer and spirits. However, it’s giving to the community – not taking from it – that sets Wyatt’s apart as a pillar of the small business community. Through charitable

giving, sponsorships and local engagement, Wyatt’s strengthens community ties and shows what’s possible when customers mean more than receipts.

When Dennis Dinsmore opened Wyatt’s Wet Goods in 2015, he planted a flag, so to speak, of generosity, family and commitment to community. That flag flies high today as the local business celebrates a decade in Longmont, having become the largest retail liquor store in the city and raising significant dollars for its nonprofit community partners

along the way.

“If you want to be part of the community, you have to give back to it, plain and simple,” says Managing Partner Matt Haynes. “Our family goes back five generations in Loveland, and Longmont has embraced Wyatt’s and our family.”

On a day-to-day basis, three generations of Haynes’ kin are taking part in the family business at Wyatt’s: his cousin Dylan Dinsmore, his aunt, his dad (on occasion) and even his kids, pushing carts.
