Reassonns s to Shop Looccaal l

this holiday season

This year’s Gallup numbers show Americans will spend just over $1,000 on holiday gifts this season. But before you click “add to cart,” remember: Choosing Boulder and Longmont’s local shops gives your money a chance to do some good close to home.

“Shopping and dining locally does more than fuel our economy; it lifts up our friends, neighbors and community members who pour their hearts into making the places we love vibrant and thriving,” says Terri Takata-Smith, Vice President of Marketing & Communications for the Downtown Boulder Partnership

More than 70% of the shops and restaurants in downtown Boulder are locally owned, she says, built on the hopes and dreams of visionaries who work tirelessly and who are always the first to step up when we need one another in both good and challenging times.

“When we choose to shop in real life, we help create the connections and shared experiences that online shopping simply can’t offer,” she says. “Shopping – and dining – in person fosters a sense of community and sparks joy, which are two things we need now more than ever.”

Here are five great reasons to shop locally this holiday season.

Local Economy Shopping LocalisallFun (andGames!)

Local stores recirculate more of each dollar back into the community through wages and other local spending, which strengthens the local economy. In fact, according to the American Independent Business Alliance, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 stays in the local economy compared to just $43 for a national chain.

Shopping locally helps you get into the holiday spirit, too. On Small Business Saturday (Nov. 29), local shopping districts are going all in on holiday fun. In Downtown Longmont, for instance, you’ll come across roaming holiday characters, plus there will be surprise giveaways, a warming station, gift wrapping supplies and snacks

Downtown Boulder’s “Downtown Dash” will take place between Nov. 23 and Dec. 31. It works like this: Shoppers can pick up a “Dash Card,” which is a business card-sized passport and collect stamps by making purchases at participating businesses and attending Downtown Boulder events.

As you fill in your Dash Card, you'll earn entries into weekly giveaways and the grand prize drawing. Find more information here: DowntownBoulderHolidays.com.

Shopping local keeps storefronts filled, creates jobs and adds to the character and energy that make a community feel alive.

Locally owned shops and markets offer unique, handmade gifts you simply won’t find elsewhere. You can even make an event of it: the Longmont Artisan Market’s Handcrafted Holiday Market (Dec. 13–14, at the Boulder County Fairgrounds, Barn A) brings together a beautiful selection of ceramics, pottery, jewelry, mittens, candles, cards, and more.

In Boulder, shopping destinations like Pearl Street feature distinctive, locally grown shops such as Peppercorn – often called the “Smithsonian of Cookstores”—and Into The Wind, the beloved kite shop Best of all, small businesses curate their selections based on the interests of locals rather than a one-size-fits-all national sales plan.

Additionally, local businesses provide friendly service with knowledgeable employees who are happy to chat and offer personalized suggestions.

#4 ShoppingLocal ReducesYour Environmental Footprint

Not only is shopping local good for your community, it's also a win for the planet. Shopping close to home reduces shipping emissions, packaging waste and the need for long-distance transportation. Plus, if you can walk to nearby shops, you'll rely less on cars

#5

Local Businesses GiveBackto theCommunity

Local businesses are owned by your friends and neighbors, who are invested in the community. According to Sustainable Connections, a Washington-based nonprofit, small businesses donate almost 2.5 times more per employee to local charitable causes than larger, national companies

The takeaway? In the rush of the holiday season, shopping local is a simple way to slow down and connect with your community, and your gifting will go a little further.

Local home improvement stores have all you need for creative holiday décor

daily camera/times-Call

The holidays are here again, and what better, brighter way to announce the good tidings than with festive decorations? That said, no amount of cheer can deny that costs are high, and store-bought décor can quickly drain your budget. Not only that, but seasonal decorations are often built to last just a season, ending up piled high in landfills. Good news: creating your own decorative displays is rewarding, cost-effective and more accessible

than you might think. What’s more, homemade décor can often be constructed to be more durable. You can also incorporate memorable, personal touches, ranging from the cozy to the quirky

“This holiday season, challenge yourself to see the decorative potential in everyday building supplies,” says Vernetta Angelo, marketing director at Budget Home Supply. “You’d be astonished at the potential from PVC pipes alone. They are also a clever way to hide extension cord – you can paint the exterior and thread the cord through the pipe.”

For more than 30 years, Budget Home Supply has served Longmont, Boulder and surrounding areas with top-quality building materials and unparalleled customer service

Knowledgeable employees are always ready to offer their expertise, whether your projects involve grand-scale home improvements or simple seasonal enhancements. Here, Angelo shares a few clever ideas to get you started on eclectic holiday displays that can withstand Colorado’s weather and stand out from the crowds!

Enhancing Garland and Doorway Shapes

To ensure your garland is extra sturdy or holds a specific shape, especially around a doorway, Angelo suggests using galvanized wire. Incorporating the wire directly into the garland provides additional shaping and stability

Similarly, this concept can be applied to structural wreath upgrades. Instead of a simple hoop, galvanized wire can be bent into a durable, custom-sized wreath frame. Or try reinforcing a plain pine wreath with copper pipe pieces or galvanized metal accents from the plumbing or roofing sections. These materials offer

to cut and shape,” Angelo says. Try Angelo’s ideas below and imagine up your own!

PVC Pipe Projects

“PVC Pipes are an excellent material for holiday decorations because they are inexpensive, lightweight and easy

PVC Trees: Cut the pipe into various lengths, arrange them in a stacked or triangular tree shape, and wrap them with garland and lights

Arches and Tunnels: Build walkthrough structures for your front yard lights or for large indoor displays

Candy Canes: Bend the PVC pipe into a candy cane shape and finish it with red and white spray paint stripes

Helping Those in Need During Difficult Times

for the daily camera/times-Call

Some folks give until it hurts all year long. Others hold on to what they have in a more Scrooge McDuck-like fashion. With the holiday season upon us, however, it seems the spirit of giving tends to raise everyone’s generosity, from those who are already accustomed to sharing what they have to even the most miserly among us

There are several organizations out there that lend a helping hand, and, of course, they need some help themselves to keep the aid coming.

Emergency Family Assistance Association

“Since 1918, EFAA has served as

Boulder County’s safety net,” said Kelly Garcia-Paine, EFAA communications manager. It’s located on Yarmouth Ave. in Boulder.

The EFAA is working to keep the essentials stocked for the holidays, offering “whole turkeys, hams, tamales, masa and other holiday ingredients so our community members can cook festive meals for their families without having to make difficult choices at the store when life happens,” Garcia-Paine said.

If you’d like to help EFAA, visit the organization’s donation page. For more information, go to EFAA’s home page at efaa.org. Garcia-Paine said financial donations tend to be most helpful as they allow staff to purchase what’s needed when it’s needed most. Donations of unopened, non-

provider in Boulder County,” said Andy Schulthiess, All Roads Chief Development and Communications Officer. Its offices are located at 4869 Broadway in north Boulder.

Staff at All Roads work hard to understand not just the physical challenges of being unhoused in Boulder County, especially during the winter months, but also the mental strains that can sometimes accompany the holiday season.

“The holiday season is challenging for our clients in a couple of ways,” Schulthiess said. “For one, it’s the beginning of the cold season, when finding a warm place to sleep can be a matter of life or death. For another, many of our clients have been separated from their families for many years, and the holidays can be emotionally difficult times for them.

“All Roads tries to make their temporary home at the shelter – or their more permanent home in an apartment – as festive as we can. In addition, the holidays are when we raise over a third of our private funding for the year.”

Schulthiess said severe cuts from Washington and strained budgets at the state, county, and local levels have made an impact on the organization’s efforts.

“We are relying more than ever on the people of Boulder County to donate what they can,” he said. “Money is always important … If you can’t donate funds, we can always use volunteers.”

I Have A Dream Foundation

“Centered around high-quality, research-backed after-school programming, we complement what happens in classrooms by providing academic support, social-emotional learning, identity and belonging work, and experiential learning opportunities,” said Marketing and Communications Manager Scott Moore.

The foundation works with students from first grade through post-secondary education, offering assistance with ESL and GED courses,

post-secondary pathways for parents and caregivers, and many other types of support and aid.

“During the holidays, we focus on keeping our support steady and encouraging for students and their families during what can be a stressful season,” Moore said. “That means continuing academic help, creating fun celebration and field-trip opportunities that bring joy during a stressful time, and – especially this year – providing extra food assistance, both directly and through

Family-owned businesses step up to help

for the daily camera/times-Call

Two local, family-owned companies dove headfirst into the spirit of the holiday season.

Longmont’s GreenPoint Roofing began participating in Toys for Tots in 2015, while the owners of the Niwot Tavern have taken their efforts on the road, bringing meals and warm clothes to those in need.

According to GreenPoint Office Manager Allie Davies, Owner Scot Brasington “wanted to create a meaningful way to directly impact local families and children through a trusted, recognizable name.”

To participate, Davies said residents may drop off new, unused toys at their office, located at 1030 Boston Ave. in Longmont, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Folks are also encouraged to make a direct financial donation by going to secure.toysfortots.org/a/ donate local.

community partners, to families that are struggling.”

According to Moore, the most impactful way to help is through a monthly gift, which gives students steady, reliable support at a time when government and corporate funding are unpredictable.

“People can also send in-kind gifts from our holiday wish list, which go directly to students at our program sites,” Moore said.

For more information and to donate, visit give.dreamboulder.org

Davies did say the toys will be picked up from their location a little earlier than usual this year (Dec. 8) due to expected high demand.

Niwot Tavern, meanwhile, did a free holiday meal from 2008 until the new co-owners (Tara Shaheen and Stacy Szydlek) took over in 2020. Of course, the COVID pandemic put a damper on that tradition, so the new owners took their show on the road.

“We collect as many warm donations as we can,” Shaheen said. “We make 100 meals that morning, fill up a U-Haul and a couple other trucks and drive around Longmont and Boulder distributing to the people on the streets.”

Shaheen also said they run a food pantry during the holidays

To donate to the food pantry or bring in warm clothing items, such as socks, coats, shoes, boots, blankets, scarves, hats, gloves, and backpacks, head to the tavern at 7960 Niwot Road, Unit D-12, daily between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Pets and the Holidays

Local veterinarian offers tips for keeping pets safe and happy amid the festivities

The holidays are about prepping for fun and festivities, but if pets are part of the picture, extra planning might be needed.

Dogs, cats and other creatures may need a safe space away from the commotion and a pet-proofed environment to stay safe and happy

“When I talk to my clients about this topic, there are things in the home and out of the home that they need to be aware of,” said Dr. Hatley McMicking, owner and medical director of Pearl Street Animal Hospital in Boulder.

Pearl Street Animal Hospital, founded in April, offers general practice, surgery and dentistry for dogs, cats, and exotics, as well as urgent and emergency care, and specialty care through partner agencies that include internal medicine, orthopedics, oncology, and ophthalmology

“When it comes to in-home, food and décor are the main categories pets can be more exposed to,” Dr. McMicking said.

Dr. McMicking recommends keeping plants that are toxic to pets out of paws’ reach, such as mistletoe and holly – poinsettias also are a concern, because, though not toxic, they can be mildly irritating. Also, keep holiday decorations, including plastic and glass ornaments, out of sight, as they can be broken and cause injury, or if ingested, cause obstruction or vomiting

“A lot of Christmas items and décor look a lot like pet toys, and they can’t differentiate that this isn’t a toy for me,” Dr. McMicking said. “They look like toys, and they get confused.”

With cats in particular, ensure that decorations are securely anchored in place, as they tend to climb and explore. Also, supervise them when they’re around the Christmas tree. Cats love balls, string and tinsel, which is shiny and crinkly and something they like to bat or carry around in their mouth. Also, keep wires and batteries hidden because, if damaged, they can cause electrical shocks or internal burns.

“If you notice something’s been chewed on and the pet is acting funny, immediately go to the emergency hospital,” McMicking said.

Gifts coming into the home

should be kept off the floor if they’re breakable or have foods that are unsafe for pets, such as chocolate or grapes. Other foods to avoid include onions, artificial sweeteners and anything fatty, sweet or spicy. Highfat foods, for example, can cause inflammation in a dog’s intestines and pancreas, leading to vomiting and diarrhea.

Another thing to avoid with pets is exposing them to a large number of visitors, such as during a party or other social activity. They may need to be boarded or placed in a quiet room if they tend to get nervous, especially if they become destructive, start panting or try to leave the room.

“Some dogs love people, but a party can be a different situation, and a party can be overwhelming,” McMicking said. “If you’re going to have parties, watch the front door and check on them.”

Pet owners can celebrate with their pets in other ways, such as getting photos taken for holiday cards or giving them their own presents while supervised.

“If you can’t be with your pet,

definitely find another time to celebrate with them either before or after Christmas,” McMicking said. When taking pets outside, ensure they’re appropriately dressed for the weather and consider using booties or cleaning their paws to prevent exposure to rock salt when it snows. Also, be sure to expose them to people bundled up in bulkier winter clothing and carrying around umbrellas when it’s raining

“Now, because they are in winter layers, they need socializing and reexposure because that can be scary for them,” McMicking said.

The Art of the Sentimental Gift

At Anspach Jewelers, President Graig Anspach said he’s seeing trends of both bold styles as well as petite and simple pieces

“Sapphire, especially Montana sapphires with their many hues, will be extremely popular,” he said. “We are also seeing an early trend toward bolder jewelry styles with diamonds, colored gemstones or both, reminiscent of styles from the 70s and 80s.”

Even though jewelry is a popular Christmas gift, sometimes givers think they have to spend large sums of money to get a thoughtful piece. Jewelers say it isn’t so, noting that putting some thought behind a piece of jewelry truly makes it special.

“Jewelry is a great storyteller,” Anspach said. “The entire jewelry design process becomes a story in itself, but most importantly, the occasion and reason behind receiving a piece of jewelry provides a time capsule of memories.”

Roth said that true elegance is not measured in dollars, but expressed through thoughtfulness, design and meaning, adding that thoughtful gifting is about connection and intention.

“Personalization, engraving initials, a date or a small charm transforms any piece into a meaningful keepsake, elevating it from a gift to a cherished memory,” she said.

“We believe every piece of jewelry carries a story - a moment, a memory, a connection captured in gold, diamonds, pearls or gemstones Jewelry should always tell a story because it is chosen with thought and care, reflecting love, identity and the moments we hold close to us.”

Whether a sparkly bauble or a timeless piece, jewelry is always a classic gift for the holidays. Local jewelers from Niwot Jewelry and Gifts and Anspach Jewelers in Lafayette share some insights into what’s trending this season and how to select a thoughtful gift, regardless of the price range.

“Diamond station necklaces are emerging as the understated star of the season,” said Hannah Taylor Roth, Marketing Manager for Niwot Jewelry “The delicate strands that catch the light with every movement are perfect for layering or wearing alone as a whisper of sophistication.”

Anspach recognizes that with the high price of gold, it’s more difficult these days to purchase this precious metal. He carries a few designer silver lines that make beautiful gifts, and cautions buyers to make careful choices

“With inexpensive gold purchases, these items are hollow and very lightweight, as pricing is mostly about the weight of a piece,” he said. “This type of jewelry will not last very long and in many cases cannot be repaired.”

Whether you’re looking for a legacy gift to be passed down for generations or an everyday piece for someone special to enjoy, take a trip to see your local jeweler. They can help you pick out the perfect gift this holiday season.
