BEST ARTISAN MARKET + GOODS Rocky Mountain Mugolio
Rocky Mountain Mugolio, LLC is a new company, established in 2024, that is already making a unique culinary mark in Estes Park by crafting artisanal syrups from young pine cones. These syrups, called mugolio, are handmade using an ancient Italian process and offer a taste of Estes Park “unlike anything else available”. They are one of the few businesses in the country making mugolio and the only one offering varieties from the abundant local conifers, including Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir and Limber Pine. Manager Scott Larrimore says they are “very honored and humbled to be recognized” in their first year of business. Each syrup has its own unique flavor – for example, the Ponderosa Pine offers “soft cinnamon” and the Douglas Fir has “a hint of berries”. Beyond the syrups, they also offer mugolio-infused honey and baby-pine cone garnish. The entire process is an Estes Park original: sourced by nearby trees, manufactured downtown and crafted by local residents. rocky-mountain-mugolio.square.site

Herlihy, Colorado’s state epidemiologist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2025-2026 Respiratory Disease Season Outlook, released on Aug. 25, this year may have a similar number of respiratory hospitalizations as last year, including from influenza. Seasonal influenza, or the flu, can occur any time of the year but cases increase in the fall and winter, with the peak arriving in December, January and February. The flu virus thrives in cold, dry environments, the equivalent to those experienced in winter. The virus also survives longer outside of the body in these conditions and lower humidity in the air allows the respiratory droplets that contain the virus to travel farther, similar to how baseballs fly farther in arid Colorado than places like humid Florida. As people spend more time indoors to retreat from the cold and gather for holidays, transmission also increases and infection rates rise. For people with chronic conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, contracting COVID and flu can lead to more serious complications. The CDC reports that multiple studies have shown a reduction in flu-related worsening of chronic conditions and a reduction in the risk of being admitted to an ICU with flu for those who have received a flu vaccination.
| Livingwell in Estes 15
To help reduce the severity of the uncomfortable symptoms of the flu, including a fever, cough, sore throat, headaches and body aches, and to prevent the chance of being hospitalized or developing complications from flu, schedule a flu vaccine. The American Academy of Pediatrics issued influenza vaccine guidelines on Sept. 22, stating all children starting at six months of age without medical contraindications should receive an annual influenza vaccine. With this advice, pediatric vaccines are also now available at EPH. Flu vaccines are covered by insurance and the COVID vaccine is covered by most insurance. Medicare and Medicaid will pay for COVID vaccines. If using private insurance, please call your insurance company to see if they will cover the COVID vaccine before arriving at the hospital for your appointment. If your insurance company does not cover the COVID vaccine, the cost of the vaccine is $250. The hospital offers a 25% discount if the vaccine(s) are paid for on the same day as the vaccine clinic appointment. For more information or if you have questions, please contact Clinic Registration at 970.586.2200. To schedule other vaccines, please schedule a nurse visit or contact your primary care physician’s office for an appointment.

Estes Park Health Gives Back

S
ince 1949, the Estes Park Chapter of Quota Club International has raised funds and served the Estes Valley community by purchasing 21 ambulances over the years and providing durable medical equipment through the Loan Closet.
But as the Loan Closet grew, the space they used felt smaller and the lack of organization became almost unbearable. In stepped the staff of Estes Park Health with a solution. As EPH management evaluated the various properties owned by the hospital and looked for a place for the upcoming boards and staff of the
Park Hospital District and the Estes Park Health Foundation to work after the completion of the affiliation with UCHealth, a solution rose to the top of the idea pile. That idea revolved around converting the former emergency services house and wood shop into a new space for not only the upcoming boards and staff but the Loan Closet too.
“We used to use two garages in different houses,” said Peggy Lynch, co-chair of the Loan Closet. “There is a storage closet near the emergency department too. It was just all over.” Now, thanks to the vision of Isaac Vancil, who did all of the construction and design of the new layout, the space for the Loan Closet has increased by about 300 square feet.

New technology helps hearts in Estes Valley
Keep on Beating
The Estes Park Health Foundation raised money to purchase a new cardiac ultrasound machine to improve healthcare practices and workflow efficiency at the Estes Park Health cardiology clinic. (Dawn Wilson/Estes Park Health)
By Dawn Wilson Estes Park Health
T
his year’s Estes Park Health Foundation
fall campaign may be in full swing, but the results of the 2024 campaign have been giving beating hearts a new reason to get their cardiac care right here in Estes Valley. After the successful Waves of Hope: Cardiac
Ultrasound Initiative campaign in 2024, a new cardiac ultrasound machine arrived earlier this year at Estes Park Health thanks to the funds raised. “Typically, we just had a stethoscope, and you could barely hear the valves. You could hear some of the blood moving through the valves, but you could not get a great idea of what was actually going on inside of the heart,” said Dr. Chad Stoltz, a cardiologist with
UCHealth who sees patients at Estes Park Health. “To see the structure of the heart you need ultrasound. Not only can you see the structure of the heart, you can actually see the flow going in and out of the valves and into the ventricles.” Cardiac ultrasound, also known as echocardiography or echocardiogram, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that creates a visual image of the heart to help
cardiologists understand the functionality of the heart muscle and valves. With this unique view of the heart, the physician can measure the size and shape of the heart, see how the two sides of the heart are working together, evaluate the speed the blood moves through and from the heart, and understand the functionality of the valves between the heart chambers. With this information, the physician can diagnose and evaluate the progression of

heart disease, valve disease, irregular heartbeats and other heart conditions. And with this latest technology available at Estes Park Health, heart patients can stay close to home to get the expert care they need. This new machine, which replaces the previous machine that aged out at ten years, has several benefits that allow the cardiac team at EPH’s specialty clinic to see more detail within the heart. “The three-dimensional modeling of the heart is one of the main perks of the new machine,” said Tonya Fitzpatrick, cardiovascular sonographer with UCHealth who performs the cardiac ultrasound tests at Estes Park Health. “The old machine didn’t have that. I wasn’t able to enhance the picture of the heart because

it wasn’t as advanced.” Another improved feature, noted Fitzpatrick, includes image boost, which delineates the inside walls of the heart for precise measurements and very clear valve structure. Fitzpatrick added that the automatic measurement is another perk she is excited to use to provide streamlined accuracy of the measurements of the heart for patients. “We use ultrasound to create 2D and 3D images of the heart,” said Fitzpatrick. “I use a transducer – like a camera – to find a good
image of the heart to take pictures, measurements and color doppler of the heart.” This risk-free test takes about an hour and is completed at the cardiology clinic at Estes Park Health. “Every year we do a fall campaign. We work together with the hospital to determine what needs they have and what the fundraiser will be,” said Theresa Byrnard, Interim Executive Director of the Estes Park Health Foundation. “In 2024, it was cardiac ultrasound because the unit at the hospital had reached

The goal was to raise $220,000 and we raised that.” “This new machine has all of the same features as before, but the software has gotten much, much better in visualizing the heart,” said Stoltz. “It allows us to assess the function of the heart much more precisely. There is no guesswork now with this device.” With the new technology in the hands of the cardiac team at Estes Park Health, Estes Valley residents can continue to get the expert care they need and deserve in this beautiful mountain valley. ou likely want a trail running shoe rugged enough to protect you from all manner of rocks, roots and other natural obstacles. But most people also want a cushioned ride, especially when tackling long off-road runs. Hoka has always balanced these two necessities in a trail shoe, and with

its Mafate 5, it continues to mesh both comfort and protection to an extraordinary degree.
The top-of-the-line Mafate 5 is designed for high-mileage runners who spend a lot of time on the trails. The two-part midsole system features denser foam directly underfoot for support, with softer foam toward the forefoot to morph over obstacles. The Active Foot Frame in the rearfoot cradles your foot like a car’s bucket seat to ensure stability with each stride. The knit upper is highly breathable and durable (and gaitercompatible for those running amid lots of debris), and the Vibram Megagrip outsole provides excellent traction. The shoe might be a bit overkill for less extreme trail runs, but even if you don’t need the protection, you’ll enjoy the signature Hoka ride. And if you’re a serious trail runner, this one is well worth a test drive. Price: $185, hoka.com

natural materials and designed to meld comfort with utility. Glerups makes all its shoes in its own factory using its own wool-blend for the uppers. You’ll find that the material is naturally moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating (not to mention odor-resistant), so you won’t overheat like you do in some slippers. In fact, they’re comfortable enough to wear yearround, not just when the temperature falls. The soles are made of natural rubber, enabling you to wear them outside without worry. (Leather soles are also available for those who only wear them inside.) Choose from a low-cut slip-on, a medium-height shoe or the higher-cut boot, depending on your style preference. While they may be on the pricier side for slippers, they’re designed to last. They’re a perfect option for after a workout, when you just want to be comfortable. They’re stylish enough for aprés-ski wear, yet will probably also be your go-to option for evenings at home after work. There’s a reason those old slippers never leave your closet; Glerups will change that. Price: $135-$155, glerups.com
