The three-day schedule is jam-packed with 10 races from five openwheel series, including three USF Pro Championships series finales. The next generation of INDYCAR drivers will compete Sunday morning in the INDY NXT by Firestone race leading into the pre-race festivities for the 110-lap BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland presented by askROI. Twotime Portland winners Will Power and Alex Palou will again be favorites on this 1.964-mile, 12-turn permanent road course. Palou, the current championship leader, will have his sights set on a fourth career INDYCAR championship.

The USF Pro Championships Presented by Continental Tire has proven itself time and time again to be one of the world’s premier open-wheel driver development ladders. It is also unique in providing scholarships at every level to ensure graduation onto the next step.
For many young drivers, perhaps the only way they would have been able to reach the pinnacle of the sport in North America, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, was to win one – or more – championships in order to continue their progression. Two of the most obvious examples are Floridian Kyle Kirkwood and Denmark’s Christian
Rasmussen. Both won consecutive titles in USF2000 and USF Pro 2000. Neither would have otherwise possessed the necessary financing to pursue their ambitions. Dutchman Rinus VeeKay, Idaho’s Sting Ray Robb and Englishman Louis Foster also parlayed championships – and vital scholarships – in USF Pro 2000 to advance their careers.
Max Garcia, from Coconut Grove, Fla., seems destined to follow in their footsteps. After impressively winning last year’s USF2000 title at the tender age of 15, Garcia has continued in USF Pro 200 where he left off. He secured his maiden victory on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., and has led the championship ever since.
Garcia’s points tally was virtually unassailable when he traveled to the streets of Toronto, Canada, last month, and he duly wrapped up his second successive title in magnificent style with

a dominant victory in the first of two races. It’s no wonder his performances have garnered the attention of a variety of teams, and Garcia is firmly focused on parlaying the scholarship prize valued at almost $600,000 into
a graduation next year to INDY NXT. With back-to-back crowns already in the bag for Garcia, the attention instead switches to the battle for the remaining places, which is still very much alive.
Israel’s Ariel Elkin, who stepped up directly this year from USF Juniors, currently holds second place in the points table. He experienced a challenging start to his season with a crash at St. Petersburg which forced him to sit out Race Two, but has bounced back with a vengeance by claiming three wins for TJ Speed Motorsports.
Elkin holds a slender three-point edge over Canadian Mac Clark, who has finished on the podium 10 times for Exclusive Autosport but is still searching for that elusive victory.
Clark, the 2022 USF Juniors champion, will be seeking to set that record straight at the same venue where he claimed his first USF2000 race win during an exploratory debut outing at the end of the ‘22 season.
Florida’s Alessandro de Tullio and New Zealander Jacob Douglas also are in the fight.
De Tullio came out of the blocks strongly for Turn 3 Motorsport, winning three of the first four races before experiencing a lengthy drought which he finally put behind him last time
out in Toronto. Douglas, a teammate at Pabst Racing to the new champion, captured his first win at Road America in June.
The quartet is currently separated by only 25 points heading into this weekend’s Continental Tire Grand Prix of Portland doubleheader finale.
This has been truly a roller coaster season in USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire, which reaches its conclusion this weekend with what promises to be an exciting tripleheader.
The early part of the 18-race campaign was dominated by Liam McNeilly. The Englishman, who placed a close second in the 2024 USF Juniors title-chase for Jay Howard Driver Development, followed up an impressive exploratory USF2000 debut in Toronto, where he snagged pole and a second-place finish, by dominating the first handful of races at St. Petersburg and NOLA Motorsports Park. Five poles, five wins and four fastest race laps left him with a score just one shy of the maximum possible points total and a huge championship lead.
Sadly, visa issues then prevented him from continuing, which opened the

door to both Jack Jeffers and Thomas Schrage, who had proven to be his closest rivals.
Jeffers, from San Antonio, Texas, looked to be the heir apparent after finishing second to McNeilly in the first three races for Exclusive Autosport. But he was soon eclipsed by VRD Racing’s Schrage, from Bethel, Ohio, who overcame a challenging start to his year, mainly due to a shoulder injury which required surgery and a lengthy rehabilita-
tion. Schrage also didn’t help himself by crashing during qualifying for the opening race at St. Petersburg.
Schrage rebounded at NOLA with a hat-trick of podium finishes, then, along with Jeffers, collected his maiden victory during the ensuing event weekend at the Indianapolis Grand Prix road course. Another podium finish for Jeffers was enough to finally overhaul McNeilly’s early points tally, although a disappointing
performance on the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park oval opened the door for Schrage to claim the advantage with a strong run to second.
The pair have been battling for superiority ever since. Jeffers appeared to take charge at Road America with pair of pole positions, only for a crash in Race One to hinder his cause. Instead, Schrage extended his points lead with another victory, even though a mechanical problem in qualifying left him mired in the pack for the second race of the weekend.
Incredibly, their roles were reversed next time out at Schrage’s home track, Mid-Ohio, where the Ohio native proved to be the boss in qualifying by snagging pole for all three races. However,
he emerged from the weekend with a best finish of second while Jeffers claimed two fine wins.
The tide had turned. Jeffers had found his stride. Most recently on the streets of Toronto, the Texan cemented his authority with a pair of hard-won victories. Now Schrage has a mountain to climb with a 51-point defi-
cit, but if the season thus far is anything to go by, anything is still possible.
In fact, Schrage’s VRD Racing teammate Teddy Musella lies only five points adrift in third. And the rookie from Orlando, Fla., has consistency on his side after finishing among the top four in every one of his last nine starts.
One race weekend can make a world of difference. Just ask the contenders for this year’s USF Juniors Presented by Continental Tire championship.
USF Juniors is the first rung on the highly acclaimed USF Pro Championships open-wheel driver development ladder. The category was introduced
in 2022 as a stepping stone from karting or a variety of school racing series, including Skip Barber, to USF2000. Next in the logical progression – with career advance -
ment scholarships at each level – is USF Pro 2000 which leads to INDY NXT and the ultimate goal, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.
This weekend’s threerace Continental Tire Grand
Prix of Portland season finale will determine the new USF Juniors champion, who will earn a scholarship valued at almost $250,000 to ensure graduation to USF2000 in 2026.
A few weeks ago, the top four title contenders were separated by just 43 points. Then came a tripleheader event at the challenging Road America. And everything changed. Well, almost everything.
Florida-based Brazilian Leonardo Escorpioni still leads the way for Zanella Racing. The second-year racer rebounded magnificently from some misfortune in qualifying to claim a fourth-place finish and a pair of runnerup placings. Escorpioni now has a tally of 310 points. He is a deserving championship leader whose only results blemish came in the third race at NOLA Motorsports Park when he was sidelined by a mechanical problem. Aside from that, he has only once failed to finish on the podium – in that opening race at Road America, which he started way back in 17th on the grid. Impressive.
Australian Liam Loiacono has emerged as Escorpioni’s closest challenger. Formerly a Formula Ford frontrunner in his
homeland, Loiacono took a little time to become accustomed to the USF Juniors car. He claimed his first win – in the wet – for Jay Howard Driver Development at the halfway point in the season at Mid-Ohio In June, then triumphed again when the series made a return visit to Mid-Ohio in dry conditions last month.
Loiacono was considered an outside bet for
the title when he headed to Road America, trailing fifth in the points table, but that changed dramatically as he sped to a dominant hat-trick of wins in Wisconsin. Instead, he now trails Escorpioni by only 14 points prior to this title-deciding weekend.
The other three title protagonists – Joao Vergara, Oliver Wheldon and Ty Fisher – all experienced disappointment at Road
America. Vergara, another Florida-based Brazilian who drives for VRD Racing, was hobbled by a rare mechanical failure. Teammate Wheldon, a second-generation racer from St. Petersburg, Fla., was involved in a variety of incidents mostly out of his control. In fact, during the third race, Zanella Racing’s Fisher, from White Rock, B.C., Canada, was adjudged to have forced Wheldon off the track. The resulting penalty relegated him from a podium finish to ninth place.
The trio remains mathematically in contention but now trail by 73, 86 and 89 points respective
