Hi Everyone,
WELCOME TO SEASON 22!
It is actually hard for me to even say that, as 22 years of FD seems absurd, but it goes to show you the true magnificence and love this sport has created.
In 2025, we embark on a very unique and interesting year as we try to top our newly minted format of “all-tandem” competition. We have made some small, but unique changes in some areas, like making both PRO and PROSPEC Seeding Brackets Top 16 competitions and we have brought back OMT’s in Seeding as well.
In addition to that, we have reconfigured the Main Event bracket-filling mechanism to make sure we always have a full Top 32 if there are 32 or more drivers. Our per round, locked in drivers are now moved down to 1-20 instead of 1-24, so the competition will feature more drivers and fiercer battles in Seeding. There will also be Championship points awarded in Seeding to assure great competition and we will also be awarding new prize money in Seeding to top it off. And finally on the competition side, the fundamental philosophy of how drivers are awarded points is shifting away from your finishing bracket position to just winning. Driver will only get points for the battles they win, not the brackets they find themselves in, so we will never see a Championship decided by attendance!
As usual, you can continue to expect a free live stream broadcast and our Top 16 show will still be featured on RACER Network. In addition to that, our FD Unlocked App will feature a real-time live broadcast, external venue cameras and also vehicle telemetry and in-car cameras for a unique and robust viewing experience, which can be found in both the iOS and Android App Stores.
Finally, as you may have heard, Formula DRIFT has moved over the publicly traded company TKO, who owns and manages the UFC. We are proud to be part of this group and look forward to what this partnership has in store for the foreseeable future.

IT’S AN HONOR TO RETURN FOR MY SECOND YEAR AS PASMAG’S DRIFT EDITOR AND CONTINUE BRINGING YOU THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE MOST ELECTRIFYING MOTORSPORT ON THE PLANET.
The 2024 season gave us no shortage of unforgettable moments. James Deane made history as the first drier to ever win four Formula Drift championships. His season started in dramatic fashion, with his Mustang catching fie in Long Beach—an incident I had VIP seating for. Just days later, he returned and took the event win, proving once again why he’s one of the best to ever do it.
We also saw the rise of young talent, with Hiroya Minowa proving age is just a number by finishing ourth overall in the championship at only 14 years old. Adam LZ, originally planning to run just a few rounds in his E36, ended up committing to the full season, securing two podium finishes at Enlishtown and Seattle and clinching fifth pace in the championship—his strongest Formula Drift performance yet.
But with triumphs also came heartbreak. Irwindale Speedway, the legendary House of Drift, hosted its final ormula Drift event in 2024 before officily shutting down—a bittersweet farewell to an iconic venue that shaped the sport’s history. In its place, Formula Drift will introduce a brand-new track layout for the final ound of the 2025 season.
Looking ahead, change is in the air. Some drivers have announced their retirement, making way for new talent to shake up the grid. Jack Shanahan, a standout in Drift Masters, will be making his Formula Drift debut alongside his brother Conor, while Tommy Lemaire steps up from his Prospec championship win with a fresh Corvette build, ready to make his mark.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF
The genesis of Formula DRIFT takes place. Formula DRIFT founders Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage bring competition drifting to America by organizing an exhibition competition for the Japanese Series D1 Grand Prix at Irwindale Speedway. This is why Irwindale is lovingly referred to as “The House of Drift” in America.
At SEMA 2003, a formal announcement is made about the creation of the very first ormula DRIFT Championship series.
The sport is growing, and the fans are hungry for more! Formula DRIFT expands their series to 6 rounds, introducing Streets of Long Beach and Evergreen Speedway, tracks that are still in the PRO Championship circuit today.
Road Atlanta paves their infamous “horseshoe” at turn 10, making it the perfect grounds for drifting. The gears are already turning for the Formula DRIFT founders.
Following the paving of that turn 10 horseshoe, Formula DRIFT holds their first ver round at Road Atlanta.

James Deane wins a record-breaking fourth championship. He won four Rounds in 2024, marking one of the most dominant performances in Formula DRIFT history.
AUTO MANUFACTURER CUP & TIRE CUP
Formula DRIFT’s 2025 season will mark the thirteenth consecutive year in which the Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup will be awarded. Introduced in 2013, these two complementary competitions serve as an additional battleground for their competitors. We all know the primary goal of all the drivers in the Formula DRIFT Pro and PROSPEC Championships: The podium. But beneath the surface of that competition you’ll be able to watch two other competitions happening simultaneously within the Formula DRIFT season. Earning that podium top spot is the obvious goal of competitors at each stop, but scoring points in the Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup can be equally important to drivers’ sponsors and industry recognition. For both of these competitions, the top two qualifying drivers eligible for each cup will contribute points at each round.
AUTO MANUFACTURER CUP
The Auto Manufacturer Cup is designed to showcase competition drift cars that utilize an engine powerplant that matches the manufacturer of its chassis. At each round, the top two
eligible drivers from each vehicle manufacturer will earn points towards that manufacturer’s points total standings. These drivers are not from a predetermined selection, nor do they need to remain the same from round
to round. Decisions regarding the engine and vehicle manufacturer eligibility will be determined by Formula DRIFT’s Technical Regulations Manager.
For the purpose of this competition, an eligible car can havean engine swap, but the engine itself must originate from the same manufacturer as the chassis. Ineligible cars will still score points as normal for the
Formula DRIFT Championships and the Tire Cup.

In the motorsports world, competition among tire manufacturers has always been fiece, but until the Tire Cup championship was formally announced in Formula DRIFT’s 2013 season, it had never been recognized in its own sanctioned competition

alongside the main championship. At each competition round, the top two drivers on each tire brand will earn points towards their respective tire manufacturer’s standings in the Tire Cup championship. Just like the Auto Manufacturer Cup, the top two drivers do not need to be predetermined, nor do they need to remain the same between rounds.
THE DRIVEN EXPERIENCE
In an initiative that started in 2024, Formula DRIFT has launched The Driven Experience, which is designed to inspire school-age kids, introduce them to motorsports, and hopefully find poential career paths to give them a head start in life.
Formula DRIFT has secured a number of partners for the program, including Acceler8 Education; the Officialommunity Outreach Program of the series. With support from FD for the last three years, Acceler8 has already helped more than 1000 at-risk youth to discover fulfiling career opportunities. Their aim has been to help individuals to avoid being sucked into a life of crime and negative interactions with law enforcement. The program has been a tremendous success already, welcoming 300 students to the opening round in Long Beach, and 120 to the recent Formula DRIFT Atlanta round.
Additionally, as a major series sponsor, the United States Air Force will lend its support, helping people find a pssible career path within its ranks. While the University of Northwestern Ohio – the Official ducation Partner of Formula DRIFT – will be able to highlight its higher education opportunities, including its High Performance Motorsports program.
Last season, students were also treated to a meal from partner Chick-fi-A and each participant was gifted a swag bag with promotional items. FORMULA DRIFT EXPANDS LICENSING BY OFFERING A PRO LICENSE VIA HOT PIT
As the 2025 Formula DRIFT season approaches, the series organizers have unveiled enhanced pathways for amateur drivers aiming to ascend to professional ranks. A signifiant development is the collaboration with California's HOTPIT Autofest drift series, now offering its champion a direct Formula DRIFT PRO li-
cense for the 2026 season—a firs in the series' history. This move underscores HOTPIT Autofest's commitment to fostering top-tier talent through its competitive fie-round series, providing both substantial prize purses and formidable competition.
Beyond the HOTPIT Autofest partnership, drivers have multiple avenues to secure a Formula DRIFT competition license for the 2026 season. Winning one of seven affiliated Multi-Round Championships (MRC) guarantees a PROSPEC license, with

regional series spanning various U.S. locations and including Canada’s Spec D series, ensuring accessibility for aspiring drifters. Success in two shootout events organized by Evergreen Drift in Washington also provides a direct path to PROSPEC. Additionally, the scouting program offers another opportunity for drivers to secure a license through affiliate programs, with new additions in 2025, including Klutch Kickers Pro-Am drift series, Drift Buffet, and Drift School USA. These expanded opportunities aim to bring more diverse talent into the Formula DRIFT ecosystem.
FORMULA DRIFT AND GRIDLIFE UNITE FOR UNPRECEDENTED ROAD ATLANTA EVENT
In a landmark collaboration, Formula DRIFT and GRIDLIFE are joining forces for an event at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, scheduled for May 8-10, 2025. This partnership marks the firs time a track owner and two sanctioning bodies have worked together to deliver an all-encompassing motorsport experience in the Southeast. The weekend will feature both Formula DRIFT PRO
and PROSPEC Championships in action, with practice sessions, tandem seeding, Top 32 competition heats, and driver autograph sessions enhancing the fan experience.
GRIDLIFE will bring its signature mix of Time Attack, GLTC Touring Cup, and the Rush SR series, adding a dynamic variety to the event. A major highlight will be the GRIDLIFE Full Course Drift event, where drivers will
tackle the entire 2.54-mile, 12-turn circuit, bringing a new level of drift spectacle to the historic venue.
Road Atlanta has been a staple in Formula DRIFT’s history, remaining the only track used throughout the series’ 22-year tenure. This collaboration is set to elevate the event’s festival atmosphere, blending the strengths of both organizations to enhance on-track action and overall entertainment for attendees.

JAMES DEANE: REFLECTING ON A HISTORIC FOURTH CHAMPIONSHIP
PASMAG’s Drift editor, Kevin Darwish, caught up with 2024 FD Pro Champion James Deane to talk about his historic fourth win.
Kevin: We're talking with James Deane, who finished his 204 Formula Drift season as the champion—making history as the first drier to win four FD championships. What does this mean to you?
James: It means the world to me. It’s like a dream come true. Last year was my first season with RTR, driving the Mustang, just getting familiar with the car and figuring everything out. Chelsea deservedly won the title, so I knew the cars were capable. Coming into this season, I was extra motivated.
I had an injury from Irwindale last year, which kept me from driving for months, but it just made me hungrier. From the moment the season started, I was on a mission. We had some bad luck at media day, but the team rebuilt the car, and we came back strong. Winning the championship in Irwindale was incredibly emotional—I had my family and friends there, and I just broke down. To be the first to four titles and to do it in a Ford Mustang RTR in just my second year—it’s unreal.
“That’s it—the season is over before it even starts.”
Kevin: It really was a fairy tale season. You started the year with the fie in the car with me at media day, and I remember thinking, “If there’s one team that can fi it, it’s RTR.”
James: Yeah, and they did. The team worked so hard to rebuild the car. I know Long Beach is one of my favorite tracks, and for a moment, we thought we might not even make it to the first round. I remember getting out of the car, seeing it in flames, and thinking, “That’s it—the season is over before it even starts.” But the RTR team had such a positive attitude. They rebuilt the car in just two days, and we went on to win the first round of Formula Drift. From that moment,
I was fully locked in, and everything just aligned for the rest of the season. To win the championship in such a dominant way—it was a dream come true.
Kevin: How is it switching between the Mustang and your S14.9, or any other car back home?
James: I absolutely love it. The challenge of jumping from one car to another keeps me sharp. One weekend, I’m in the Mustang; the next, I’m on the other side of the world in an inline-six, turbocharged car with different tires, grip, weight, and wheelbase. That first ap is always an adjustment, but it keeps things exciting. I think driving so many different cars has helped me improve as a driver. But if any car is going to teach you how to drive, it’s one of these Mustangs.

Kevin: If given the chance, would you like to drift a Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5D in Europe, maybe in Drift Masters?
James: Absolutely! You never know—maybe one day. It would be a new challenge, especially with the different tire regulations and setups in Europe. That’s always exciting to me.
Kevin: After your win at Irwindale, they announced the track was shutting down. How does that make you feel?
James: It’s tough—a hard pill to swallow. Irwindale is the "House of Drift." Anyone watching drifting from outside the U.S. knows it from the old D1 videos of Japanese drivers coming over to battle Americans. It became so iconic. It
was always a challenging track, and I had a few podiums there but never a win—until this year. Winning the fina-ever Irwindale event? I feel so lucky. It made an already special day even more unforgettable.

Branden Sorensen was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV with a family of motorsports enthusiasts. Driving since the young age of 5 years old, he was raised with a steering wheel in his hand. Branden has experience in many different racing disciplines including karting, UTVs, and Off-Road Trophy Trucks. Branden began to focus on drifting at 12 years old, competing in local grass roots drift events. He earned his Formula Drift license by winning the U.S. Drift Championship at 14, the youngest in Formula Drift history at the time. The 2025 Formula DRIFT season will take place at various locations across America over the course of eight months, but the action and entertainment will be available even more frequently than the events themselves. For the main events, all eight rounds will be covered via live stream broadcast around the world, which will give viewers worldwide the chance to get an up-close and personal experience of the Formula DRIFT circuit from the comfort of their own homes. In addition to the regular broadcasts, several hours of new digital content will be available throughout the season, available on Formula DRIFT's online outlets, including their website, as well as social media channels. Formula DRIFT can also be watched on TV by tuning into RACER Network in the United States and Canada. If you miss an event, don’t sweat it!
