2025 POWERHOUSE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AWARDEES! EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS

LAURA TOOP

LAURA TOOP

Powerhouse Global Star

PGMAG: Laura, welcome to today’s interview with Lady Anita.

LT: Thank you so much. It’s an honour to be here. I’ve long admired how Lady Anita elevates voices across the globe - especially those often overlooked. It’s a privilege to contribute to this powerful platform.

PGMAG: Please briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Acknowledge the realities. Create psychological safety. Then engage your people through frameworks that empower action from the inside out.

LT: I’m Laura Toop, Leadership Transformation Consultant, Founder of #ProjectMe, Human-Centred Change Strategist, and currently serving as the NHS & Police Advisory Chair. I support leaders and organisations navigating complexity and uncertainty through my framework #ProjectMe, which is rooted in self-leadership, personal agency, and values-led transformation. My work is deeply informed by lived experience, including rebuilding my life after the loss of my husband, my health, and my corporate career.

PGMAG: As a key player in leadership development, what would you say to a professional who is trying to transform a struggling organisation?

LT: Start with identity. Transformation isn’t about simply fixing what’s broken. It’s about remembering who you are, what you stand for, and why you exist. Too often, organisations leap to strategy without anchoring in purpose, people, and shared values. Rebuild trust. Acknowledge the realities. Create psychological safety. Then engage your people through frameworks that empower action from the inside out.

to take the first step. And often, it’s not about creating more - it’s about using what you already have, smarter.

Just like the depth and breadth of the root system to a tree is what enables it to weather the storms - even being felled - this is true of organisations.

That’s where the 3As from #ProjectMe come in: Acknowledge where you are, Act with courage and intention, and Attain the clarity and momentum to flourish.

You don’t need all the answers upfront - you need the courage

We don’t need more meetingswe need momentum. Not more leaders, but ones who truly listen and empower. That’s the shift #ProjectMe helps unlock.

PGMAG: If you were given an opportunity to address world leaders, what would your message be?

LT: Reconnect with your humanity. You cannot lead what you do not understand, and you cannot inspire what you do not live. We talk of systems and strategy, but the

world is shaped by people. We must stop seeing leadership as control and start recognising it for what it truly is - facilitating courage, clarity, and connection in others.

Prioritise well-being, equity, and courage over performance metrics. The future isn’t waiting for us to catch up - it’s calling for us to lead differently.

I’d remind them: leadership is not a title - it’s a commitment. One that begins with selfleadership.

PGMAG: Please tell us about some of your programmes/ projects, and your call to action for our readers.

LT: At the heart of my work is #ProjectMe - a humancentred framework designed to help people take control in an uncontrollable world. It includes:

• #ProjectMe Playbook: Practical tools for leading through uncertainty using my 3As model (Acknowledge, Act, Attain).

• #ProjectMe Pathway: The inner journey from vulnerability to flourishing.

• #ProjectInsight and #ProjectUnity: Organisational initiatives under my wider programme,

• #TogetherAsALLies, designed to bridge divides, empower voices, and build safer, more inclusive environments that improve health outcomes and community well-being.

Because resilience isn’t just personal. It’s collective. #ProjectMe was also born from my own teenage experiencewhere, following an accident, I underwent bilateral hip and back surgery. Physically, I was back on my feet within six months. But emotionally? That’s a very different story.

Reconnect with

your

humanity. You cannot lead what you do not understand, and you cannot inspire what you do not live. We talk of systems and strategy, but the world is shaped by people. We must stop seeing leadership as control and start recognising it for what it truly is - facilitating courage, clarity, and connection in others.

The isolation, the loss of control, and the disconnection from friends and schoolingespecially in an era long before mobile phones or the internet (yes, I am that old!) - all had a profound and lasting impact. I wasn’t fully present at school for nearly two years, and that absence shaped more than just my education.

In that void, I grasped for something - anything - I could manage. That “something” became food. I stopped eating. The eating disorder I was left with… well, that took years to truly move forward from.

Traditional therapy addressed the symptoms, not the cause. No one ever asked who I was beneath the pain or acknowledged that the very essence of who I was and what mattered most had shifted as a result. That’s why #ProjectMe starts with identity - because when we anchor in who we are, not just what we do, real transformation becomes possible. We are truly set up for sustainable success without compromise.

My call to action? Don’t wait for permission. If you feel disconnected, disillusioned, or stuck, start with what you can control. You are not nothing - contrary to my then 4-yearold nephew’s belief when my world imploded. (To be fair, he did promise to look after me for 100 days.)

But truly, ‘nothing’ became what I rebuilt my life onmyself, and my ability to business plan. 20+ years in corporate change & transformation taught me something. And I’ve learnedit’s a very good place to start. Reconnect with your values. Rebuild your inner resilience.

Then lead from that place - for yourself, and for others.

Because #ProjectMe is what brings sustainable change and success without compromise. It’s applicable to every situation in life - large or small, organisational or personal.

PGMAG: As one of the global speakers for the upcoming Powerhouse Global Leadership Conference/Awards event, and with a focused theme on “global collaboration”, why is it important for change makers to work together in the current socio-economic climate?

LT: Because no one has the full picture alone. We are navigating overlapping crisessocial, economic, environmental - and old models of leadership are no longer fit for purpose. Collaboration isn’t optional. It’s essential.

But collaboration doesn’t start in boardrooms; it starts in conversations. With humility, with curiosity, with a willingness to be changed by what we learn from one another. #ProjectMe is built on this idea: that we flourish together,

or not at all. Our collective future depends on courageous connection across silos, sectors, and systems, and is a fundamental part of maintaining our momentum.

PGMAG: What are your top three keys to winning in life?

LT:

1. Know your #BrandMe –your values, your voice, your vision.

2. Don’t outsource your power – the strength lies within you.

3. Lead with courage, not just confidence – confidence follows when you act in alignment with who you truly are.

And perhaps a fourth: Lead with courage - but bring your full self. That includes the wonky bits, the off-script moments, and the belly laughs, because you already are perfectly imperfect, and belong right where you are, in your own skin. Work with yourself, rather than against, and you will find it a lot less like pushing water uphill with a rake!

Because leadership is messy, human, and relational. And when you lead from the inside out - even with the wonky bits - you become the kind of leader people remember and trust.

PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently?

LT: I would have paused and paced sooner. I would have made space to listen to myself, rather than silencing my intuition to meet others’ expectations. For too long I overfunctioned, thinking that was strength. Now I know: strength is knowing when to stop, when to ask for help, and when to start again.

Pacing and Pausing are 2 of the 7 P’s of Proactive Choice, another of the #ProjectMe Playbook tools. It’s amazing how much more clarity you gather as a result, and, ironically, in slowing down, you do in fact speed up!

PGMAG: What keeps you motivated as a leader?

LT: Knowing that every time I speak truth, create space, or offer tools for someone to rise, it makes a difference. My motivation isn’t performancedriven - it’s purpose-led. I do this because I promised my husband, before he died, that I would continue to fight for a

life worth living.

I do this because I know what it’s like to lose everything and start again.

And I do this because I believe we are not here to survive, but to flourish.

FLORENCE AREWA

Powerhouse Global Star

PGMAG: Florence, welcome to today’s interview with Lady Anita.

FA: Thank you, Lady Anita. It’s a pleasure to be here and to engage in this important conversation.

PGMAG: Please briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Throughout my career, I have operated at the intersection of public health and social impact, championing inclusive growth, proven practice, and a shift in perspective— moving beyond traditional health interventions to address the broader determinants that shape life outcomes.

FA: I am Florence Arewa, a public health advocate, strategist, and the founder of WeThriveTogether Outreach. My work is centred on fostering sustainable, community-driven solutions that enhance health, well-being, and socioeconomic opportunities for underserved populations. Throughout my career, I have operated at the intersection of public health and social impact, championing inclusive growth, proven practice, and a shift in perspective—moving beyond traditional health interventions to address the broader determinants that shape life outcomes.

PGMAG: What inspired you to start WeThriveTogether Outreach, and what impact has it had so far?

FA: WeThriveTogether was born from the recognition that too many communities— particularly those facing systemic barriers—are excluded from mainstream conversations and decision-making processes that directly impact their futures. More critically, there is a widespread lack of understanding that non-medical determinants of health—such as economic stability, education, and social connections—are the real drivers of life outcomes.

Our mission is to bridge this gap by fostering inclusive growth through strategic collaboration, connecting grassroots networks with treetop networks to create holistic solutions. We ensure that lived experiences don’t just inform policy, but also shape how programs are designed, delivered, and adapted to meet real needs.

Our impact has been multifaceted—whether through influencing program delivery shifts, equipping community leaders with strategic knowledge, or developing scalable, sustainable support models. At the core

of our work is the belief that true empowerment comes from knowledge-sharing— ensuring that individuals and communities have the tools to lead their own lives rather than being passive recipients of support.

PGMAG: As a female leader, what were some of the challenges you encountered on your journey to the boardroom, and how did you overcome those obstacles?

FA: Leadership spaces—have historically been structured

in ways that do not fully accommodate diverse voices, particularly those of women of colour and this is not an exception in public health spaces. One of my greatest challenges was navigating established networks where representation was limited and opportunities were often gatekept.

I continue to overcome these obstacles by being intentional and strategic—leveraging data, building alliances, and consistently demonstrating value. More importantly, I

refused to be defined by the limitations others projected onto me. Instead of waiting for a seat at the table, I focused on creating new spaces where diverse perspectives don’t just have a place but are actively shaping decisions.

PGMAG: Please tell us more about your organisation (WeThriveTogether Outreach).

FA:WeThriveTogether Outreach is committed to fostering sustainable, community-led solutions that address gaps in public health messaging and social inequalities. Our work is rooted in collaboration— bringing together experts across various public health disciplines, community leaders, and institutions to co-create strategies and co-deliver interventions that drive meaningful change.

Our approach is structured around three core pillars:

• Innovation – We explore new models of community engagement that challenge conventional public health narratives.

• Sustainability – Rather than simply "reaching"

communities with interventions, we connect with individuals and communities, equipping them to take ownership of their well-being and lead their own lives.

• Collaboration – We recognise that lasting change is only possible when diverse stakeholders work together, sharing expertise and resources to amplify impact. We also believe that public health challenges are to vast, no one person or group can address it alone.

Through this model, we’ve influenced programmatic shifts, empowered local leadership, and driven sustainable community transformation.

PGMAG: As one of the global speakers for the upcoming Powerhouse Global Conference/Awards event, what should the participants expect from you?

FA: The theme of this year’s conference—Innovation, Sustainability & Collaboration— aligns perfectly with my work. Participants can expect a

thought-provoking discussion on how we can move beyond reactive, short-term solutions and instead cultivate proactive, systemic change.

I will challenge us to rethink sustainability—not just in the environmental sense, but in leadership, economic empowerment, and community resilience. I want to leave attendees with questions that prompt reflection—not just answers, but a shift in mindset that sparks long-term change.

Most importantly, I will emphasise that true innovation is born out of collaboration. The most transformative solutions don’t happen in isolation—they emerge when diverse perspectives, lived experiences, and interdisciplinary expertise come together with a shared vision.

PGMAG: What are your top three keys to winning in life?

FA:

• Strategic Positioning & Vision – Success isn’t just about hard work; it’s about **foresight, adaptability, and intentional positioning.

It’s about proactively identifying or foreseeing opportunities, preparing to seize them, and making strategic decisions that drive long-term impact.

• Resilience & Adaptability –Setbacks are inevitable, but they don’t define you—your response does. I have faced failures, disappointments, and unforeseen obstacles, but I have always used them as stepping stones to recalibrate, adjust, and forge ahead with renewed determination.

• Networks & Collaboration – While I have experienced rejection and setbacks from individuals and institutions, my greatest successes have come from the power of networks. Aligning with the right people, nurturing meaningful relationships, and leveraging collective wisdom are fundamental to achieving sustainable success.

PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently?

early stages of leadership, there’s a tendency to say yes to every opportunity, every request, every project—often at the cost of strategic focus. Over time, I learned that clarity and impact require discernment. Now, I say "no" with confidence and without feeling compelled to justify it. Every ‘yes’ must align with my broader vision and values.

PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self?

FA: Florence, own your space— unapologetically! The world will try to dictate where you belong, what’s possible for you, and how far you can go. Don’t internalise those limitations. Instead, define success on your own terms, create your own blueprint, and never shrink to make others comfortable.

Above all, never dim your light to accommodate the discomfort of others. You are meant to stand out—embrace it.

PGMAG: Thank you for sharing your brilliance with us through this interview.

It has been a privilege to share these insights, and I look forward to continuing the conversation at the Powerhouse Global Conference.

PGMAG: Please share your website/links with us.

FA: Certainly. You can learn more about WeThriveTogether Outreach and our work at www.wethrivetogether. co.uk Additionally, you can get in touch via info@ wethrivetogether.co.uk for public health leadership, sustainable impact, and collaborative innovation.

FLORENCE AREWA

Florence Arewa is a visionary public health champion and the dynamic founder of ThriveTogether, a registered UK-based notfor-profit organisation dedicated to promoting physical and mental health, resilience, and well-being. Her focus is on addressing the unique public health needs of poorly served communities, often termed as “hard-to-reach audiences” in public health efforts, who frequently face limited access to tailored interventions.

Guided by the belief that the challenges we face today—whether social, environmental, or economic—are too vast for any one person or group to address alone, Florence’s work is rooted in the power of collaboration to drive transformative change.

This ethos of collective action has enabled her cornerstone approach to record remarkable outcomes. She mobilises and engages communities through partnerships with faith groups (churches, mosques), local leaders, community groups, and grassroots networks. These collaborations amplify public health messages and campaigns, deliver impactful health awareness and education, and provide tailored interventions that directly address the unique needs of underserved communities, promoting equity in access to vital resources. With a degree in public health and years of experience in local authorities, the NHS, and

the voluntary sector, Florence has become a formidable public health practitioner. Her expertise spans health promotion, strategic planning, and community engagement, allowing her to design and lead initiatives that reduce health gaps and promote well-being and inclusion within diverse communities.

At the heart of ThriveTogether’s mission is a commitment to advancing public health, reducing inequalities, and fostering inclusion, and equity. Under Florence’s leadership, ThriveTogether facilitates community-driven initiatives that promote mental wellness, resilience, and holistic well-being. The organisation empowers underserved groups by delivering workshops,

training programs, and providing resources to help individuals unlock their personal and professional potential.

Florence’s dedication and innovative leadership have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, she was honoured at the Kent Mental Wellbeing Awards for her outstanding contributions to public health and mental wellness. She continues to be an inspiring force, relentlessly taking a community-centric approach to build healthier, more inclusive communities where everyone can recognise and access the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Through ThriveTogether, Florence continues to inspire, educate, and uplift, fostering a healthier and more resilient community for all. Her vision is clear: to drive transformative change

by harnessing the power of collaboration and empowering individuals and communities to take charge of their health, well-being, and futures. Through ThriveTogether, she is turning this vision into a reality—creating a future where thriving is not just an aspiration but a shared reality for all, one initiative at a time.

Her work ensures that public health messages reach those most in need, empowering them with the tools and knowledge to thrive.

A scripture Florence lives by:

“Beloved, I wish above all things that you may thrive in every aspect of life, enjoying good health and prosperity, even as your soul thrives.”
