For me, the start of summer in Niseko isn’t marked by a date, but by a feeling. It builds when you notice the twilights lingering past 7pm; the first time you go outside without a jacket; when asparagus starts appearing on daily specials menus at your favourite local restaurants.

When we launched Summerlife in 2008, Niseko was becoming known internationally for its winters. But those of us who stuck around after the thaw soon learned what long-time locals already knew – the other seasons are just as magical, for entirely different reasons. It’s hard to put your finger on exactly why Niseko in the green season feels so good. You don’t have to do much here to feel like you’re doing enough. Take a simple stroll in the fresh air. Meditate on the flavour in every bite of the fresh local produce. Just being here makes life feel whole.

As you read through this magazine, you’ll find there’s plenty to do – but you might also discover that Niseko offers the best kind of holiday in the modern world — the kind where you let go of plans, and just enjoy being.

YUKATA – JAPAN’S TRADITIONAL SUMMER DRESS

Niseko’s summer twilights are long, the evenings cool, and there’s an uncommon buzz in the air. Eyes adjust to lantern-light; aromas drift from dozens of food stalls; conversations and laughter drift and mingle with the sound of music and excitement. It’s the evening of the local summer matsuri.

Japanese summers burst with colour and tradition, and the yukata plays an important role in the celebration of the season. These light cotton “summer kimono” transform ordinary evenings into festive celebrations, and are a symbol of summer itself.

In modern Japan, where opportunities to wear traditional dress are increasingly rare, wearing a yukata at a summer festival is a cherished way for locals to reconnect with and celebrate their rich cultural heritage. For visitors, it’s a welcoming invitation to join in.

Unlike the formal Japanese kimono, yukata are commonly worn by both genders and all ages. Their lightweight fabric and vibrant designs make them a simple contrast to the formal kimono, and their ease of wear means anyone can take part.

THE PARTS OF YUKATA

allowing air to circulate and keeping you cool as the evening warms with music, lights, and dancing. It’s a simple pleasure that instantly connects you to the season, and to the centuries-old rhythms of Japanese summer.

If you’d like to wear a yukata at one of Niseko’s summer festivals you can buy them at local supermarkets or departments stores. Here is a quick guide on how to wear a Yukata.

Wrapping: Wrap the right side of the yukata across your body, then the left side over it. This is very important, as right over left is only used when dressing the deceased.

Obi (Belt): Secure the yukata with the obi. For women, the obi is typically tied around the waist. For men, the obi is typically tied around the hips. There are various obi tying styles, allowing for some personal flair.

Footwear and Accessories: Pair your yukata with geta (wooden sandals).

Carry a small handbag or pouch for essentials.

Etiquette: Walk with small steps to maintain the yukata’s elegance. Be mindful of the yukata’s length when sitting or walking up stairs.

The green season is a feast in motion – just when you’ve tasted one delight, another is coming into season – and summer is the best time to explore everything there is to offer.

At Kaki Goya (Oyster Shack), staff don’t serve oysters – they shovel them. Towering piles of shell-on oysters, harvested fresh from the ocean right in front of the restaurant are dumped straight onto a sizzling hotplate at your table. For the incredible price of just ¥4,600 (from January to June) you can get an all-you-can-eat oyster deal that seems almost too good to be true – especially for anyone used to paying premium prices anywhere else in the world.

Less than an hour from Niseko, this unassuming seaside shack in the tiny fishing town of Suttsu delivers one of Hokkaido’s most memorable summer meals.

The setting completes the experience: views stretch across the Sea of Japan, and seagulls drift past the open-sided dining hall. Alongside, an old wooden herring warehouse whispers of Suttsu’s past as a booming fishing port. Today, the town has transformed its seafood legacy into a warm welcome for travellers. Add sweet scallops, snow crab legs, and seasonal shirasu rice bowls to the mix, and you’ve got a seaside feast that’s as rich in flavour as it is in history.

Tucked away where you’d least expect them, across the rolling hills and farmlands of Niseko, are countless gastronomic adventures waiting for food lovers to discover. With wide-open, snow-free roads, the green season is the perfect time to explore this gourmet wonderland.

At first glance, Le Mantaro could be mistaken for just another farm barn on a Hokkaido country road. Step inside, however, and you’re welcomed by a contemporary two-storey restaurant space with open loft and rustic stone fireplace. The space is flooded with natural light from expansive windows encapsulating a panoramic view of Mt Yotei and the surrounding farmlands.

Located in Kyogoku, a short drive from Niseko, Le Mantaro’s architectowner transformed this 50-year-old barn into a stylish rural bistro. The elegantly rustic building’s past life is preserved in its high gabled ceilings and timber beams, with the renovation infusing modern charm and comfort.

Between the restaurant and Mt Yotei is farmland as far as the eye can see, and it’s from these very fields that Chef Noboru Murakami – a veteran of Michelin-starred restaurants and former resort executive chef – brings his farm-to-table ethos to diners. Murakami-san works closely with local farmers to source fresh fruit

and vegetables, prime local meats, and locally sourced seafood. A range of lunch and dinner sets and courses are available offering more than just a taste of Hokkaido – it delivers a sense of place, where the flavours, setting and hospitality come together to tell a distinctly Niseko story.

The Niseko Trail is more than a hike — it’s a walk through the geology and history that shaped the region. After years of effort by local enthusiasts, the “Niseko Trail” has been officially named, joining Japan’s growing network of historical and nature-based trekking “long trails”.

“It’s not just about reaching the summit – there’s a sense of journey,” says Ryuta Furuichi, owner of Mountain Guide Coyote and director of Yotei Sangakukai who helped with the development of the trail. “As you walk, you learn not just about nature, but also the local history and culture.”

Stretching more than 40km across the full length of the Niseko mountain range, the now officially recognised route runs from Hirafu to the Sea of Japan at Iwanai, and takes three days to hike. It follows a continuous ridge line through the heart of the NisekoShakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, traversing peaks between 1,000m and 1,300m elevation.

It passes several sites of regional and historical significance. One of the most striking is Iwaonupuri, a site of sulphur mining as far back as the Edo period . Further west, the route skirts Shinsen-numa, a highland wetland famous for its reflective waters and alpine flora. “After days in the mountains there’s something powerful about ending your hike at the sea – it really stays with you,” Furuichi-san says.

With more than 20km of trails now and 30km by phase three, Niseko is on track to be the host of Japan’s largest MTB park. Niseko’s volunteer-run trail building organisation NAMBA launched season 2025 on 31 May with building of a new Santa Cruz-sponsored intermediate jump trail and new climbing trail at their Twin Peaks Bike Park. They are also working on concepts for Japan’s first alpine loop trail. Hirafu has more plans in the pipeline, while Koropokkur Bike Park is building a new free-ride trail and adding boardwalks, seesaws, and rock sections. The Jolly Fox Niseko is the most talked-about golf tournament on the Niseko summer calendar – and now it’s your turn to join in the fun. The Jolly Fox International gives visiting golfers the opportunity to get in on all the jolly action that takes place on and off Niseko’s alpine-flanked golf courses during the “green season”.

Coined “the US Open of Niseko”, the Jolly Fox Niseko franchise was spawned out of the peak of COVID lock downs in 2020 as locals used the opportunity to socialise on the wide-open fairways. It uses an innovative tournament format with a focus on fun, but at the same time, serious competition.

Two-person teams are made up of a fox (a low handicapper) and a mouse (a high handicapper). The unique random handicap pairing systems mean teams cannot rely solely on the skills of one golfer. Together they compete in a 54-hole tournament across three different round formats – Best Ball, Scramble and Alternate Shot. As winter ebbs towards spring and Hokkaido’s fields begin to show tinges of green, the buzz of Niseko’s peak tourist season draws to a close. Activity shifts from the mountains to the lakes.

The sleepy lakeside town of Toya begins to stir as boutique artisan stores reopen and welcome a steady stream of summer visitors, drawn to the lake’s tranquil blue waters and relaxed rhythm.

Toya is emerging as a quaint hub for Japanese artisans who’ve embraced the joys of lake life. From bakeries and bookshops to doughnut stores and distinctive restaurants, a quiet creative energy is taking root.

Like many iconic destinations, it’s the early pioneers who shape the cultural foundations — drawing in like-minded people and building a community.

Ukiyo-e are woodblock prints or paintings that depict the fleeting pleasures of the world – often featuring kabuki actors, courtesans, sumo wrestlers, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life.

This summer, the Nitori Cultural Foundation unveils a dedicated ukiyo-e museum at its acclaimed Otaru Art Base –a collection of five character buildings housing museums and galleries in the historic Otaru Canal tourism precinct.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Otaru was a thriving trade port and a major centre for herring fishing and marine products. Many commercial buildings including historic banks, government buildings and warehouses born out of this prosperous era have been beautifully preserved and are now utilised for other purposes.

Opening July 24, the Ukiyo-e Museum is home to more than 1,600 works – from Edo-period masters like Hokusai (creator of The Great Wave off Kanagawa from the series

The museum’s first floor offers an immersive permanent exhibition: a recreated Edo-era bookshop, an exhibition of traditional ukiyo-e tools, an activity to introduce visitors to the traditional printing process using stamps, and a display of high-resolution reproductions of masterpieces. Upstairs, rotating exhibitions will explore themed collections drawn from the museum’s archive, starting with the grand opening show “Hokusai and Hiroshige” (Jul 24–Aug 24).

Otaru Art Base is conveniently located in tourism precinct around the canal, which is lined with old warehouses that have been converted to cafés, restaurants and shops. In the evenings it’s illuminated by flickering gas lanterns, with traditional rickshaws offering tours of the area.

In the sleepy port town of Iwanai, just a short drive to the Sea of Japan coastline near Niseko, lies a surprising cultural treasure.

The unassuming Arai Memorial Museum of Art, perched on a rural hillside near the Iwanai Ski Resort overlooking the Sea of Japan, houses a remarkable private collection of over 260 original Picasso prints – one of the largest of its kind in the country.

As the rolling hills around Niseko turn green, the silence of snowboards slicing through powder snow is these days replaced by the clack of urethane wheels, the scrape of trucks on coping, and the unmistakable energy of big kids and small discovering their lines on four wheels.

As soon as the snow melts away, withdrawing snowsurfers start cruising the endless mountain roads on skateboards. Along with its official status as an Olympic sport and mainstream recognition globally, skateboarding is gaining serious popularity in Niseko.

Over the past five years alone, Niseko has witnessed the creation of a couple of small private concrete bowls, a mini pop-up skate park in Hirafu, a grassroots outdoor park in Kutchan, and now a crowd-funded indoor skate park inside a disused school gymnasium on the outskirts of Niseko Town.

All of a sudden, the skate scene in Niseko feels like it’s growing into a legitimate cultural movement — and one that might just shape the next generation of athletes in Niseko.

Born in Kutchan in 2008, Cocona Hiraki was only 12 when she won a silver medal in the women’s park event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the youngest Japanese Olympian in history. In Paris in 2024, she won silver again, becoming a two-time Olympic medallist before turning 16.

While Cocona was born in Kutchan, she moved with her family 70km east to the larger industrial port town of Tomakomai for her father’s work when she was five. Soon after moving, she became captivated by skateboarding after a fortuitous visit to a skate park, and started practising almost every day.

Her story has become a point of inspiration for local skaters — and proof that global-level talent can begin right here in little old Niseko.

A COMMUNITY SCENE TAKES SHAPE

The recent growth of Niseko’s skateboarding infrastructure hasn’t come from big investors, government funding, or national programmes. It’s come from the grass roots up.

While there was once a super cool indoor skate bowl at the old Loaf Lounge bar in Kutchan in the mid 2000s, Niseko’s modern skateboarding renaissance appears to have gathered steam during COVID.

In 2021 a group of local skaters transformed a pair of disused tennis courts in Kutchan’s Yahata Agricultural Park into a DIY skate park. With Mt Yotei rising in the background and little

more than plywood, rails and a lot of determination, they laid the foundations for potentially big things to come.

Around the same time, a local café owner built Niseko’s first concrete skateboard bowl. The Nupuri Bowl (pictured previous page) quickly became a favourite hangout and an unofficial hub for the growing skate scene, even drawing a visit by Cocona Hiraki herself. On the other side of a town, a local father of two even built a full concrete bowl in his backyard!

In another major milestone, this summer a bunch of passionate skaters opened what is so far the biggest skate park in Niseko. The Miyata Skate Park is housed in a re-purposed old school gymnasium on the edge of Niseko Town, offered rent free by the council.

Shinji Tani, the owner of Guesthouse Niseko Side6 at Annupuri, so far has used about JPY1 million of his own money and salvaged materials to build the space, with the help of friends. Having previously built ramps at Side6, he drew on a blend of surf-style flow, contest-style features and approachable lines for beginners.

The next goals: a competitionsize mini ramp, official skate events, and a public concrete park somewhere in the region.

Skateboarding in Niseko is not just filling the gap between snow seasons — it’s starting to feel like a natural extension of the region’s riding culture.

Snowboarders happily swap powder for pavement, carving the sweeping turns of the Niseko Panorama Line, mimicking the same flow they find in deep snow and gaining valuable crosstraining benefits in the process. The transition is intuitive — the muscle memory, balance and rhythm carry across seasons. And increasingly, the lifestyle does too.

In Hirafu, Niseko’s biggest rental company Rhythm sets up a couple of indoor mini ramps inside its flagship Hirafu store each summer, as well as rails, ramps and a pump track outside.

Meanwhile, the DIY and maker culture that helped define Niseko’s snowboard scene is being reflected in skateboarding as well.

resident Ben Toohill, is Niseko’s first custom skateboard label. Toohill shapes his decks by hand using hardrock maple, crafting long cruisers and directional surfskate setups designed specifically for Niseko’s terrain and seasonal road conditions.

Inspired by the philosophy behind local snow brands like Gentemstick, 36BOARDS is built on the idea that boards should reflect the land they’re ridden on. Whether it’s downhill carving on tarmac or pumping in a bowl, the boards are part of a uniquely Niseko expression of skate culture.

Most visitors flock to Mt Annupuri for its powder snow, but in the stillness of summer and early autumn mornings, a different kind of magic unfolds. Hikers who rise before dawn and ascend its quiet trails are rewarded with an ethereal phenomenon: a cloud inversion that wraps the valley in mist, while the surrounding peaks rise like islands above a white sea.

The hike up Mt Annupuri is a moderate and rewarding two hour journey, beginning in the pre-dawn hush under a dark sky with only a head torch to light the way. As the trail winds upward, forested slopes gradually give way to open ridges. With every step, the horizon brightens until—just before sunrise—you reach the summit, and the spectacle begins to unfold.

From the peak, Mt Yotei dominates the eastern view, living up to its name “Fuji of Hokkaido”. When unkai appears, low clouds blanket the valley below, while Mt. Yotei floats majestically above, its silhouette framed by the fiery glow of the rising sun. The scene is nothing short of cinematic—an island in the sky surrounded by rolling, shifting mist.

Unkai is not guaranteed. It requires the perfect mix of cool overnight temperatures, calm winds, and high humidity. This rarity makes witnessing it all the more unforgettable. For the best chance, plan your hike during late summer or early fall, and keep an eye on local weather forecasts.

Hidden among the forest, this Annupuri chalet bridges two worlds – one of movement and music, the other of stillness and retreat. The owners, one of whom is a renowned Japanese salsa dancer, envisioned a home where nature, family, and dance could all find space to breathe in the Niseko countryside.

“Tokyo’s summer heat has become so intense that we realised we needed a place to escape,” one of the owners says. “Somewhere we could enjoy cool weather and delicious local produce.”

The 2,700sqm forested lot in the Niseko Annupuri Residences estate offered an opportunity to create a lifestyleoriented home in nature. “The large lot and its natural setting gave us space to design a private garden with a broad deck for summer barbecues, a yard where our daughter can play, and plenty of room to disconnect from the digital world and simply be.”

Architect AE5 Partners says the underlying brief was to make the most of the natural setting, and to ensure the family could spend time together or separately. To achieve that, Hidenari Arai proposed gently segmented spaces with individual views into the forest. “We arranged the living areas to open into the trees,” he says. “The continuity between nature and architecture is one of the essential values in Japanese design, and we interpreted that in a modern way.”

Tancho’s most distinctive feature is the dedicated dance studio. “What I like most about it is the beautiful view from the studio,” says the dancer. “It’s wonderful to exercise in a studio that feels like you’re in the middle of a forest – something you can’t replicate in the city.”
