Let’s learn to dream big

3

It’s really about trying to plant a seed or a thought and give them inspiration to know that there’s not just one path to follow to success By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC LET’S get ready to dream big at the Luminosity Youth Summit. Hundreds of youngsters from around Australia and overseas will take part in a threeday program (July 19-21) in Port Macquarie presented by people who all have one thing in common – success. The Luminosity Youth Summit is now in its 5th year and has already helped over 1200 youths with courage to follow their dreams, learn to collaborate and to create. The program will give people the opportunity to develop confidence, unlock potential, and make positive change towards the future, whether that be health, happiness, career, family and life. Speakers from around the globe are flown in to the Glasshouse on the main stage and masterclass rooms to conduct a TEDX style event for young people. “We have around 22 speakers and workshop facilitators, people at the top of their skill set, at the event,” said Kate Wood-foye, Luminosity Chair. “Whether its sportsmen, scientists, doctors, journalists, performing arts, philanthropy, or entrepreneurs, the aim is to expose young people to the many different ideas possible, allowing them access to all the information from people who have had great success in their life and how they got to where they are now.” The program began when like-minded business people, university professors, and key media bodies came together and created a vehicle to lift youth leadership in regional Australia and provide new ways to support the excellent work taking place in schools in the region, in particular the Mid North Coast. “It’s certainly not there to replace school, because the schools are doing an amazing job and that’s an important message to get out there,” Kate explained. “This is just providing a different perspective and definitely providing some fresh inspiration to support what’s already happening there. It gives them access to people

who are different people, some who maybe have gone down that university path and have been successful and have done a few things on the way that have helped them to be majorly successful, and some who have taken a completely different path. It’s opening up opportunities and ideas and discussions.” The event is open to people aged 15-25, however it has been so popular that Kate says she has had some really keen 14 and 27-year-olds who have also attended the event.

“The feedback has been amazing,” said Kate. “When we started the project in 2012 we had no idea how it would be received, because it was the first of its kind in the region, or really in Australia. It’s been overwhelming and we’ve had fantastic support from local business, from young people to university students. We’ve got people flying from New Zealand to attend the event and people from all over the country, like the Gold Coast.” Each year the theme for the event is ‘Dangerous Ideas for Success’ and each day

has a theme. 2017’s themes are Courage, Collaborate, and Create. “It’s really about trying to plant a seed or a thought and give them inspiration to know that there’s not just one path to follow to success, there are many paths,” said Kate. “Some people definitely achieve success through a traditional path but there are many different opportunities out there and many different paths. “But it’s certainly not about correcting the direction, it’s about making inspiration to find the direction.” The people running the event are voluntary not-for-profit and are made up of representatives from the business, media, and education communities who want to see youth leadership and development at the heart of regional communities. Tickets are $295 and include morning tea or afternoon breaks, lunch and keynotes, workshops, activities, and workshop materials. Cinema spending a ‘horror movie!’ AS a concerned ratepayer in the Kempsey Shire Council area, why is the council lending $2 million to a private developer interest free with what appears to be minimal chance of repayment. Then in what appears to be the next breath wants to increase rates by 4% per year. This $2 million could be used to reduce the burden on ratepayers to maintain and upgrade the shire’s infrastructure. Why should ratepayers be assisting to increase someone’s property value?

Council support I RECENTLY submitted a small item praising Council for the installation of a Give Way sign at the exit of Mahogany Hill, Port Macquarie for possible inclusion in ‘Thumbs Up’. My submission was not printed and I fully understand that it would be absolutely impossible to consider or publish every item you receive. This is not of concern to me as I have already thanked Council for their support in providing safety measure for both vehicles and pedestrians. What is becoming a concern to me is the (in my opinion) very pointed

One example of our deteriorating infrastructure, just drive down Kemp Street and examine the state of the railway underpass. After our recent experience at both Port Macquarie and Nambucca Heads cinemas … with number of people in the cinema at the time of our visit being less than 10, how is the council ever going to recoup the $2 million loan. In addition the supposed additional $2 million federal grant could be better spent on some improved sporting

negative comments directed towards Council and Councillors by you and some of your named and ‘name provided contributors’. I fully understand that paid advertising is your income and I don’t object to that at all as I try to support local business. It is the total anti-council feel that I am getting that I find disturbing and which makes your previously informative and enjoyable free paper much less appealing. Lyn Easton Port Macquarie

Heat on theory

The only fact that is conclusive at this point is that the weather is changing and has been changing since the earth has been spinning around the sun and the billions of dollars we spend trying to stop it will not do a thing to change our weather patterns but instead line the pockets of the alarmists who have been feeding off this gravy train since the idea first started to surface 30 years ago. I think the money spent on climate change would be better spent on cleaning up the oceans and forests that have been repeatedly raped and ravaged over the last 200 years. I WOULD like to say what wonderful butchers we have in Munster Street. These men are very honest. They help support Sister Marjorie’s Soup Kitchen. I was there ordering meat for Tuesday. On the following day these men phoned and asked me if I had lost money in the shop as money was found exactly where I was standing. The money was not mine but what honest men they are. Also they have the best rissoles in town. Highly recommended.

Thumbs Up ON Thursday, May 25, while shopping in Settlement City I suffered a severe coughing attack, due to a long-term lung disorder. I was unable to breathe and feared I would pass out. I want to express my everlasting thanks to the kind lady who helped me to a seat, gave me a bottle of water and made certain that I was ok before continuing with her shopping.

Thumbs up TO the Ulysses Club on their visit to the Hastings area. It’s great to see more mature motorcyclists enjoying their shiny machines and not having to make a lot of noise and show off.

TO Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for installation of a give way sign at exit of Mahogany Hill onto Colonial Circuit and Farrer Parade. If this prevents one child, adult pedestrian or serious vehicle accident it will be well worth it. Thanks for prompt and courteous attention to this matter.

TO Andrew and his crew at Liberty Lawn and Garden for the excellent work on our garden makeover. All work was done promptly with a great result. Highly recommended.

IT’S a tough gig putting a paper to bed each week, knowing, no matter how good an edition, that someone will be upset about something … you know, you’ll never please all of the people all of the time. But we battle on week-in, weekout, doing our utmost to provide the communities of the Hastings and Macleay Valleys with a good weekly newspaper. There have been many times I have felt like chucking it in and asked myself, why do I bother? Sometimes it is overwhelming, just how thankless a task it is. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been swinging from totally disillusioned with it all to totally owning it, and back again. And then, out of the blue, something happens that makes it all seem worthwhile! I have been totally humbled over the past few months. It started in the last week of February – I got a random call to say I needed to pick up my ticket to attend the International Women’s Day breakfast, as I’d been nominated as a Hastings Heroine! Last month I got a phone call to say I had been nominated for the Telstra Business Women’s Awards. I thought: ‘You’ve got the wrong person.’ This week, I got an email saying we had been nominated for the PMQ business awards. So, I want to thank you all for your support – it’s uplifting and encouraging! I might stick around a bit longer!

while wasting $4 million of local and federal government funds when 1 or 2 would suffice. This proposal shows a total lack of business acumen by some councillors and any senior council staff who support this proposal. I SEE Harry Creamer is broadcasting his so-called undisputed ideology in the letters again every time we get a weather event such as more than usual rain, heat or not enough rain. Maybe he was on board with Christopher Flannery when he said dams would never be full again and cost the taxpayers millions of dollars for unused desalination plants and I see he is still calling it global warming after the alarmists changed the name to climate change when they realized that the earth was not warming according to their weather models.

facilities for our young residents. Are the developers paying any development fee? On the total supposed cost of this project development the fee would no doubt be in excess of$500,000. The proposed waste of the public funds mentioned above would be better used to attract or help local small and medium sized businesses to grow, thus employing larger numbers of local residents. While we are not against a cinema in Kempsey we do not need 4 cinemas,

Council needs you By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Port Macquarie-Hastings Council needs you! The Council is currently on the look out for volunteers to help out with community events and activities. “Currently we have 1000 volunteers on our register and hopefully we can expand our list to 2000-3000 volunteers,” said Nateaka Blake, Port Macquarie Hastings Council Volunteer Coordinator. “We have volunteers ranging from high school-aged students all the way up to elderly aged people – all ages. “We are looking for anyone from any age demographic as we have many different events and programs that will need help from people of all different walks of life.” Volunteers will be helping out with many exciting upcoming events - at the Glasshouse and the region’s libraries, Tastings on Hastings, the Graffiti Blasters initiative, Coastal Warriors, and the Countdown to Christmas, to name a few. “We have a couple of big events coming up towards the end of the year so we are always needing volunteers,” Nateaka said. “They can give an hour of their time, a day, or throughout an event which might go over two days, it’s really flexible and we work with our volunteers too.” Nateaka says there are also some fantastic benefits of becoming a volunteer for the Council. “There are so many benefits of joining, one especially being the social connectedness, getting to know new people and feeling connected in the community,” she said. “We are getting people from Wauchope, Kempsey, Kendall, and all over the region,

New trailer a life-saver

MINISTER for Emergency Services Troy Grant, was recently joined by Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams in presenting Marine Rescue NSW volunteers on the Mid North Coast with a $9,200 grant for new equipment to help them respond rapidly to boaters in trouble. Marine Rescue Crowdy Harrington unit will receive a new trailer for the unit’s 6.8 metre rescue vessel Crowdy 20. “Marine Rescue volunteers need to hit the water as quickly as possible when responding to boaters’ calls for help,” Mr Grant said. “The current trailer used to transport the rescue vessel to the water is past its use-by date. This funding will help ensure our volunteers have the equipment they need to keep us safe in the water.” Crowdy 20, the unit’s secondary rescue vessel, is housed on its trailer under cover at the unit’s $215,000 training facility and boat shed, opened last November. It is a rapid response vessel for incidents on the Manning River and can travel up to seven nautical miles offshore. The unit’s larger vessel, the 9.5m Naiad Crowdy 30, is moored in Crowdy Head Harbour. Mrs Williams said the Marine Rescue Crowdy Harrington volunteers work tirelessly to protect local and visiting boaters on this busy coastline. “In the past year, the unit has responded to 15 life-threatening emergencies on the water. This grant for a new trailer will mean the volunteers can continue their proud record of saving lives on the water,” Mrs Williams said. Marine Rescue Crowdy Harrington Unit Commander Karen Farrell thanked Minister Grant and Mrs Williams for the grant funding, which she said was a welcome boost for the unit’s 60 members.

I think the main thing a lot of people don’t know about choir is when you sing in a choir, after your rehearsal, you always go home on a high. You always feel fantastic.

You always feel fantastic,” she says. “For example, I’ve got one of my sopranos who just had a shoulder operation and she’s had to miss a week. She came in on a Monday night, and I was driving her afterwards because she couldn’t drive herself and she said ‘Oh I feel so fantastic, I miss singing so much.’ So it does make you feel wonderful and you do make lots of friends and of course, there’s always performance, because there’s nothing like singing to an audience.” The Hastings Choristers welcome anyone who wishes to sing at a performing level, whether they

MEMBER for Oxley, Melinda Pavey MP, has announced the third round of Fixing Country Roads is open and a share of a further $100 million is available to councils throughout Oxley for upgrades to roads, bridges and truck washes. “The first two rounds saw the NSW Government commit more than $3.8 million for four projects in our region, helping local councils assess and tackle freight bottlenecks that are costing local industries and businesses daily,” Mrs Pavey said. “We are very happy to confirm that $100 million will be made available to eligible councils for projects they believe will deliver significant benefits to their local communities. Funding can go towards truck wash facilities and upgrades to our roads and bridges that will better link them to freight hubs, like grain silos, saleyards, supermarket distribution centres and depots.” Councils can submit an application for Fixing Country Roads, and also consider cofunding options.

IN the mood for some music? The Hastings Choristers’ are performing with the Reds Quintet and Hastings Saxophone Quartet at the Westport Club for the ‘In the Mood’ concert. “What is special about this concert is it’s quite a departure from the normal repertoire that we do,” said Robyn Ryan, Musical Director at the Hastings Choristers Inc. “We normally do quite serious classical music, and this is quite bright and light. “It’s going to be a bright and boppy concert which includes Hastings Choristers Cantorus and Cantablie choirs, local sax and clarinet teacher Carol Irving with her Sax Quartet of students from St Columba Anglican School and the popular local Reds Jazz Quintet led so capably by Glenn Moore, who is also a member of the Hastings Choristers. Glenn will be conducting Cantorus in some well known numbers such as ‘When I’m 64’, ‘The Longest time’ and ‘Oh Happy Day.’ “People can grab a drink on the way in and stay for dinner afterwards. We are really looking forward to bringing something different to everyone.” The Hastings Choristers have been around for 27 years and have between 30-60 members. The community choir promotes the art and practice of choral singing and its reputation for talent has given them invites to perform at the Sydney Opera House, Town Hall, and other regional venues. “We have three or four concerts a year,” said Robyn. “This is only just a short one, about an hour, to catch people on the way home from work. “We use mainly the local venues when we perform, although we do get invited to the Sydney Town Hall and venues away, and we have quite a strong following in Taree and quite

THE recent Queen’s Birthday honours list was a distinguished list of local heroes and national figures. Now is your chance to acknowledge those among us who keep our society ticking. In other words - volunteers – the one in four Australians who serve the community for no financial gain or personal acclaim. While some of Australia’s rewards systems might seem out of step with Australia’s egalitarian ethos – there is an awards program that does recognise and honour those amongst us who serve a higher purpose: The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards is now in its 11th year and throughout that time it has upheld and provided a public platform to recognise the endeavours of thousands of ‘ordinary’ – and frankly not so ordinary, volunteers amongst us. The deadline for nominations is Friday, July 14. Nominations for Volunteer of the Year can be made online at www.volunteering.com.au.

Secure water funding

MEMBER for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, has welcomed the NSW Government’s $1 billion Safe and Secure Water Program announced in the 2017-18 State Budget. Ms Pavcey said the Safe and Secure Water Program has been set up to ensure regional NSW communities have access to high-quality, reliable and affordable water that meets modern environmental and health standards. “It is great to see both the Central Kempsey and the Bowraville Waste Water projects shortlisted to receive funding under the new Safe and Secure Water Program, and I will be working closely with Kempsey Shire and Nambucca Shire throughout the funding assessment to ensure these project demonstrates value for money.” Ms Pavey said. “If funding is approved, these projects ensure the right infrastructure in place for the people and businesses of Bowraville and Kempsey.”

Jack has found his calling By SUE PATERICK

WHEN a teenage Jack Henshaw first experienced the excitement and action of a cattle auction at Kempsey Saleyards he knew he had found his dream job. Jack regularly accompanied his friend Darcy to the cattle sales where Darcy’s dad was an auctioneer. As fate would have it, Ian Argue is Principal of real estate agency Kempsey Stock and Land. “They have the best auctioneers on the coast,” Jack said. “After growing up with the Argues, I knew that auctioneering and selling livestock and property was what I wanted to do.” Jack didn’t waste any time in fulfilling his dream. As soon as he finished school at St Paul’s College, he moved to Roma in Queensland to become a live-stock trainee for Landmark Stock and Station Agency. “It’s Australia’s biggest livestock agency,” Jack said. And now at just 20 years old Jack is a fullyqualified livestock auctioneer and real estate agent. When Jack first moved to Roma he helped auction 12,000 to 13,000 cattle a week. At the biggest sale 16,000 head of cattle went under the hammer and the days are long. “My phone normally starts ringing at 6am,” Jack said. “For the sales in Roma I started at 4am and finished at 11pm or midnight. “On the big sale I was there until 4am the next

Deadline extended

THE local community now has until Friday June 30 to comment on a development proposed for the site of the historic Laurieton Post Office and Postmaster’s residence. Acting Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Lisa Intemann said she had been approached by Phillip Bowman of the Camden Haven Historical Society seeking further opportunity for resident comment on the proposal. “There were concerns about the notification of the development, and the time frame that was offered to the Historical Society to make comments on the proposal,” Cr Intemann said. “I had discussions with Council officers and it has been agreed that the community should have more opportunity to comment, with the new deadline now Friday June 30.” The documents can be accessed through the DA tracker on Councils website pmhc.nsw.gov.au with comments able to be lodged electronically. Council planning staff can also be contacted on 6581 8111 to discuss the proposal, provide assistance in accessing the information and help make a submission. “Submissions need not be long, but they must relate specifically to the information on exhibition,” said Cr Intemann. “This is an important heritage site, involving some of the few of Laurieton’s oldest public buildings still surviving since the 1890s, and it is vital that the community is involved in decisions for its future.”

Port traffic warning

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is asking the community to be aware of changed traffic conditions, and to seek alternate routes as a result of the road reconstruction works occurring in Gordon St, Port Macquarie. Gordon St is a busy arterial route that carries more than 21,000 vehicles per day, and traffic congestion and increased travel times are being experienced, particularly during peak periods. The section of Gordon St between Horton St and Lake Rd is now single lane in each direction, and changes have been made to the Horton St, Hay St and Lake Rd intersections to allow for works to the road itself and underground services. Electronic sign boards are in place advising of the changes, and the traffic management measures that are in place are to ensure the safety of the community and work crews, as part of NSW road safety regulations.

morning.” Jack is currently living at Mareeba in far north Queensland. While the population is only 8500, he says there are ‘millions of cows’. “The average property up here is about 50,000 hectares so they’re big,” he explained. Bigger properties and a large amount of cattle are the perfect combination for an auctioneer, and Jack is excelling in his chosen career. On May 11 he won a place in the finals of the Queensland Young Auctioneer competition, which will see him compete for the top prize in the Royal Brisbane Show in August. According to Jack, being a successful auctioneer requires a range of skills. “You have to be really outgoing, charismatic

and good with people,” he said. “You also need good pronunciation and diction, a strong clear voice and be able to add up quickly and accurately.” Jack has been practicing for the show every day, in his car and at home. “I record myself and play it back,” he said. Apart from the adrenalin rush of being an auctioneer, Jack likes to make the most money he can for people and be very quick and correct. Amazingly, a lot of people once told him he would never succeed but he sure proved them wrong. His advice to anyone with a dream is not to let anyone else tell you; you can’t do it. “Nothing is impossible,” Jack said.

(FREE CROC CHOC Cut out the above coupon and claim your FREE croc chocolate when you arrive at Billabong Zoo)

This Sunday is Croc Day

THIS Sunday (June 25) is Croc Day at Billabong Zoo, Port Macquarie. The Estuarine Saltwater Crocodile is still listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in Queensland and ‘Specially Protected’ in WA. In the 1970s the species was nearly hunted to extinction in Queensland and was on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Endangered throughout the 1980s. Today, thankfully, the Saltwater Croc is listed on IUCN as Least Concern but there are many areas around the world where they are under serious threat. Palliative care boost to NSW REGIONAL NSW To Benefit From $100 Million Palliative Care Package: Hundreds of regional and rural frontline health staff will be able to upskill and deliver palliative care services to their local communities. We are tackling the need for specialist training through training nurses and allied health frontline workers who currently work in our rural and regional communities, and also boosting funding for additional specialist doctors and nurses for new positions in regional health districts. The new scholarships and also funding for staff to undertake training will make a difference as more people would be able to access specialist palliative care expertise locally. This is a win for professional development of our health workforce and a huge win for local communities. The NSW Government’s strong economic performance has enabled the record investment in palliative care services – an additional $100 million over the next four years, including $17.4 million in the 2017-18 Budget. Maintenance Pop Up Delivering For Housing Tenants: Social housing tenants living in Port Macquarie received on-the-spot home repairs and assistance at a maintenance pop-up run by the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) last week.

STATE MATTERS

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

Pru Goward, Minister for Social Housing, and I met with residents at the pop-up event to discuss issues affecting their homes. FACS held the event in partnership with the regional maintenance contractor, O’Donnell & Hanlon. In addition to on-the-spot repairs, the popup event provided an opportunity for tenants to discuss any outstanding maintenance queries with FACS staff. By meeting with the tenants we were able to talk about important issues affecting their homes and attend to some of them on the day. Providing a better experience and improving service delivery for public housing tenants was the driving force behind this maintenance popup event. For all maintenance requests tenants should call the Maintenance Line on 1800 422 322, 24 hours, 7 days, all year round.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

A COMPETITION that gives local students the chance to win a trip to Antarctica has been extended until Friday, July 7. The ‘Name our Icebreaker’ competition will see up to 12 students fly to Antarctica for a day and become the first children to set foot on the continent under the Australian Antarctic Division program. The competition deadline has been extended by four weeks to allow more students the opportunity to enter. The Australian Antarctic Division decided to extend the competition to engage with as many school children from all around Australia as possible and give teachers the time to work through the curriculum-aligned modules about the icebreaker. I encourage local teachers to use this competition as an opportunity to educate students about Australia’s long involvement with Antarctica. The ‘Name our Icebreaker’ competition has two categories: primary (years 5 and 6) and secondary (years 7 and 8), with classes able to enter their suggested name in a written or video format. More information on the competition can be found on the Australian Antarctic Division’s website, ‘Classroom Antarctica’. For more information, visit: http:// classroom.antarctica.gov.au/icebreaker

Had to break few words to get omelette

OMELETTES cannot be made without breaking eggs. That is an old French proverb that means something like you cannot achieve something worthwhile without sacrificing something that is in itself valuable. Don’t ask me for an illustration. Work it out for yourself. Many people have eggs for breakfast. Some have eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But I thought about eggs when I had a pain in the stomach recently. Did you know omelettes were named after thin plates? Let me tell you a story. A long time ago, let’s say a few hundred years, the word we now know as omelette resembled a thin plate. Only it wasn’t spelt omelette then. The Latin word for a small plate, so I am told, was something like lamina, vastly different from omelette. But read on. I often wonder if omelette, the word we now know, was the result of a series of blunders. But who am I to say? The spelling undertook many changes over the years, including lemelle (blade of a knife), lamelle, alumette, alamette and eventually omelette. The influence of early Romans and French played its part in the changes of spelling. And, remember, spelling was not so standardised in those days. But apparently an

my

LAURIE BARBER

omelette resembled a small, thin plate. My big dictionary describes the changes in spelling as metathesis, and I don’t have room to tell you about the various changes, not that you are interested anyway. It’s all to do with suffixes and things like that. Now I suppose you want to know about metathesis or suffix. Anyway, I think the word was chosen because of its long, thin shape and they didn’t have much imagination a few hundred years ago. Actually, I wonder who was the first bloke to eat an egg. That might be another column. These days an omelette is made from eggs whipped up and supplemented by various extras such as cheese, apples, parsley, chopped ham, fish and mushrooms and so on. Don’t you have all the extras? Well, I suppose you can have an omelette just with eggs, but the extras make it so much tastier. The first reference in print that I could

find came in 1611, when I found an omelette described as “a pancake of eggs”. In 1655 the Comical History of Francion commented that a person had been commanded to make an aumelet, “it being Friday”. I don‘t know what Friday had to do with it. Maybe they thought the eggs came from fish. They actually had omelette frying pans. Maybe they still do. I found “a small omelette ferrying pan is necessary for cooking it well”. My wife says I need a map to find the laundry, so don’t make me to be an expert. Somebody has even made an omelette with strawberries. In 1958 I found a recipe of an omelette with strawberries described as “en surprise”, so maybe it wasn’t such a success. Even people can be omeletted, if the Westminster Gazette can be taken as a guide, when it reported a person as saying “I don’t want to be omeletted”. The Americans spell the word omelet - which seems to make sense – but elsewhere it is spelt omelette. You could always find another word for omelette. I found about 100 words, but they were in different languages. Anyway, what’s wrong with omelette? I suppose you could put in different fillings and call it something else, but I don’t think it will catch on. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Apply now for Mayoral Fund

‘Hear’ is a great cause By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

A FUN weekend could save a life. The first ever Port Macquarie Lions Club Mad Cap Pet Parade is on this Sunday and will raise funds for the Lions Hearing Dogs program. One in six Australians has some form of hearing loss, and that number is expected to rise to one in four by 2050. Luckily, there are little pups training hard to help their best friends. “The ‘hearing dogs’ have been around for quite a long time, it’s a very valuable service,” said Colin Hardwick, President of Port Macquarie Lions Club. “What they do is they train a hearing dog to hear the phone and to hear the door bell, so for somebody who is deaf and lives on their own, it’s invaluable service.” Many Australians who suffer from hearing loss, whether it’s taking a hearing aid off at night, or their condition being so severe a hearing aid won’t help, they struggle with everyday hearing problems.

This is why this Sunday’s event is important, however, Colin emphasizes that it’s also just a really great fun, family (furry family included) day. There will be two parades – one just for dogs, and one for all other pets except dogs. “It’s meant to be a fun event, it’s not for the best groomed pet, it’s just for people to go there with their favourite pet and have a good time along with other pets,” Colin said. “We give out prizes for novelty events as well. “It’s meant to be a fun day so if anyone turns up with their pet lizard, as long as it’s under the supervision of the owner, it’s all good.” Of course the dedicated work by these dogs also comes at a price. Each Lions Hearing Dog

costs upwards of $30,000 to cover training and delivery, free of charge, to its deaf or hard-ofhearing owner. “These dogs are trained in Adelaide,” Colin said. “It’s very expensive to train a hearing dog – similar to training a seeing dog - but that training is important.” So, grab your furry, or scaly friend, and head down to the Mad Cap Pet Parade this Sunday, June 25, at St Columba Anglican School, Major Innes Road, Port Macquarie. Registration for all animals except dogs will start at 9am with their grand parade at 10am. The registration for dogs only will begin at 10.30am followed by their grand parade at 11am.

APPLICATIONS have now opened for the 2017-2018 Mayoral Community Fund. The small community grants program is an initiative of Kempsey Shire Council and is aimed at supporting community projects that produce a positive outcome for the Macleay Valley. Mayor Liz Campbell said Council was delighted to open this year’s funding round, and invited the community to submit an application for small grants that will help deliver projects or programs planned over the next 12 months. These small community grants have been made available through savings made when Councillors waive many of their entitlements allocated to the Elected Officials’ Expense budget. “My fellow councillors and I are proud to support the community in providing programs and projects that enrich the well-being of people in the Macleay,” Cr Campbell said. “This is a gesture we make to the community as a way we can contribute to help worthwhile community projects come to life.” Last year’s funding round was shared among community groups such as the South West Rocks Netball Club, the Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Life Saving Club and the Kempsey Show Society. A handful of organisations have been exempt from having to submit an application, and these are for long-standing community events Council has supported over many years. These include end-of-year scholastic achievement awards for local schools and TAFE, Country Education Foundation Australia and the Carols by Candlelight event held each Christmas. For full details, download the application form at: www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/mcf or contact Customer Services on 6566 3200. Applications must be received by 4.30pm on Friday July 28, 2017.

The argument against fluoridation FLUORIDE began its life as a waste bi-product of the fertiliser and aluminium industries where its disposal caused huge environmental problems. The US Government, upon the advice of the Environmental Protection Agency, decided to experiment by adding small amounts of sodium fluoride to the water supply of towns near these industries in 1930 … and the rest is history. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council began fluoridation of our water supply in February, 2012, despite ongoing public opposition. Drinking water is not the only way fluoride enters the human body - the skin is our largest organ. The pores of our skin open when we shower or bathe with town water and fluoride is absorbed. Similarly, when using fluoridated toothpaste the mouth absorbs fluoride even without swallowing it. Doctors Paul Connett PhD, James Beck MD, PhD and H S Micklem DPhil combined their professional training, years of scientific experience and knowledge of ethical practice to write a book entitled “THE CASE AGAINST FLUORIDE”. These three scientists have in excess of ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF RESEARCH into what matters when it comes to the TOXICITY of what we drink and eat, and medicine prescribed for us. One tragic case occurred in 1973 when a well-meaning mother gave her two-year-old son dental decay prevention tablets containing SODIUM FLUORIDE. Sadly, he died. The attending doctor accurately described the

CAF President Paul Jones and wife Margaret cause of death as FLUORIDE POISONING. A copy of the death certificate has been published.

However, when overseas scientists enquired of our pro-fluoride Australian “scientists” the existence of this certificate was denied.

ROHYPNOL is fluorinated Valium and is commonly referred to the “date-rape drug”. It is prescribed to pacify unruly prison inmates, patients and on occasion to children. Pesticides and insecticides have their TOXICITY ENHANCED by adding Fluoride. FLUORIDATION FAILS IN REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Fluoride was first added to the water supply in the Republic of Ireland in 1963. Scientific research was untaken by renowned environmentalist Declan Waugh into the effects of fluoridation on the Irish population, fifty years later. This revealed serious and increasing health problems. Heart, kidney, liver and thyroid malfunction presented the greatest threats. Asthma had become more prevalent amongst children. Whereas in Northern Ireland, which is NOT FLUORIDATED, the threat of these diseases is nowhere near severe. Declan also examined dental statistics over the past ten years and found very little difference in dental caries between the fluoridated Republic and non-fluoridated Northern Ireland. CAF President Paul Jones will attend an information table in Port Central Shopping Centre near Prouds Jewellers on June 29 from 9.30 am. Come along and find out more. Call 6582 7836 and email pmjones@ecopost. com.au (The content on this page is an advertorial, supplied by the Citizens Against Fluoridation)

Citizens Against Fluoridation need your help to discontinue the fluoridation of the Hastings water supply PUBLIC MEETING

NO SAFE LEVEL OF FLUORIDE INTAKE

No scientific study has ever been conducted anywhere in the world to establish A safe daily intake of fluoride. The daily intake of fluoride is impossible to control for the following reasons: *The personal consumption of fluoridated water cannot be controlled. *The weight of individuals varies widely which has a bearing on the metabolism of fluoride. *The effect of fluoride on babies and young children is far greater than adults. *The consumption of fluoridated pharmaceuticals has greater impact on the elderly. *The contact with fluoridated pesticides, insecticides and other industrial chemicals. *The personal consumption of black tea which contains natural fluoride is made even worse if brewed on fluoridated water. Scientists in New Zealand and the USA studied the fluoride concentration in many of the most popular brands of teas in their respective countries with similar results. They found that in one 250ml cup of black tea made on fluoridated water contained up to 1.1mgs. of fluoride. The average of four cups per day drunk , particularly by the elderly could be as much as 4.2 mgs. If mugs of 350ml were used the consumption could be as high as 5.9mgs. When the rate of fluoride added to PMH water supply is one mg per litre or one part per million, how could anyone possibly calculate how much fluoride we consume per day. Scotland proves early childhood education of dental hygiene for pre-school and primary school students is more effective. Dental hygiene beats water fluoridation hands down!

GUEST SPEAKER Dr GEOFF PAIN Ph D MONASH UNIVERSITY 1972 –79 Dr Pain is a research scientist and former industry professional and advisor to the Japanese government. He has worked for three universities in Australia and two in the United Kingdom. Dr Pain is author of numerous published papers and patents in the area of chemistry, physics, genetics, optoelectronics and toxicology. He has identified causes of cancer and worked on synthesis of potential anticancer drugs. In his talk Dr Pain will focus on the hard science used to study the damage done by fluoride. This includes atomic resolution of electron microscopy to analysis of cadavers and living victims of fluoridation. He has most recently studied the destructive influence of the element fluorine on the human body, and is currently writing a book on the dangers of disposal of phosphate fertiliser industrial waste through public drinking supplies. Thursday November 9 5pm for 5.30 until 8pm The Westport Club, Buller Street, Port Macquarie SEATING LIMITED: 150 ADMISSION: Members $5 / Non-members $10 Registration for this catered event is essential. Roslyn bows out after last dance

Photo: Kayla Ellery from Kaynell Photography

Retiring dance teacher, Roslyn West with her husband Kevin Reed, surrounded by happy twirling couples at the Melville High School Debutante Ball of 2017

• From Page 1 “I actually teach the children to dance and the transformation they achieve in just 10 weeks is amazing,” she said. “They go from teenagers to adults because no other sport in school has such a close interaction between male and female, and that teaches them respect.” To help her budding dance students embrace ballroom dancing Roslyn uses their own music so it is relevant. One of her past students, Mark MacDonald, went on to win third place in the World Youth Latin dance competition and came first in Australia. Like her Melville students, Roslyn first started ballroom dancing in high school. One of her friends was going along so she thought she would join in. An asthmatic, Roslyn found she started something but would be unable to finish it because of her health.

Then she discovered ballroom dancing and has never looked back. “I loved it and it came so easy,” she said. “Dancing is one of the best exercises you can do because you use every part of your body.” Roslyn’s family instilled in her a love of music. “My grandmother played piano and my mum loved to sing,” she explained. In fact, Thank You for the Music is one of Roslyn’s favourite songs and she wants it played at her funeral. She grew up in Wentworthville in Sydney and moved to Macleay Valley for a quiet life in the bush about 30 years ago. “When we moved up here our children could dance too,” she said. Her career as a dance teacher began when the Head Mistress of her children’s primary school offered her a hall on Saturday afternoons. “The idea was to give the local children something to do,” Roslyn said.

“From there I started teaching at night.” Roslyn and her husband also attended local dances and started doing New Vogue dance routines when Lou Kesby’s cousin, Graham, took a break from playing the music. Two other couples joined in too and together they performed sequence dances like the Swing Waltz and La Bomba. “We would choreograph those dances and we did Latin as well,” Roslyn said. Roslyn soon had other adults wanting her to teach them to dance too and after a few years, she opened the Roslyn West Ballroom Dancing Studio. She taught adults at first and then more and more teenagers wanted to learn. It was then she started doing exams with the younger dancers because they showed a real interest. In her group lessons she taught three styles: ballroom dancing, Latin American and New Vogue.

“I loved teaching beginners because I gave someone else the pleasure I got out of dancing, and the challenge was there,” Roslyn said. She has also taught therapeutic dancing at Bennelong Haven, who had a ball every year, and tutored 60 teenagers in pony club. In the beginning Roslyn used to tutor Kempsey’s three high schools. Knowing that she has tutored thousands of young dancers during her long career gives Roslyn great joy. While she plans to spend her retirement seeing a bit more of Australia in their new motor home and will also spend some quality time living near family in Sydney, she will never forget her time in the Macleay Valley. “The people I’ve met and the thousands I’ve touched will give me fond memories for the rest of my life because I was able to share something I love with others,” Roslyn said.

Volunteers Aileen Lewthwaite, Helen Counihan and Patricia Major outside the iconic Daisy Turner Kiosk, which will soon become a UHA meeting room and craft centre

A new role for iconic Kempsey hospital kiosk THE Daisy Turner Kiosk has been an iconic landmark at Kempsey District Hospital for more than half a century, but from June 30 the little glass rotunda will have a new role. The United Hospital Auxiliary volunteers have decided to change the focus of the kiosk from serving coffee and cakes to being a meeting place for the group’s members. From the end of June, the building, which bears the name of the volunteers’ past branch president, Daisy Turner, will become home to the UHA’s monthly branch meetings and craft sessions. President Aileen Lewthwaite said the kiosk had experienced a significant drop in visitors in recent years with fewer people using the River Street entrance to the hospital. “We really didn’t want to lose our beloved building so it will now be used for branch meetings on the third Friday of each month.” Ms Lewthwaite said the volunteers would continue to raise funds for hospital equipment, but focus their energies on creating craft items for sale at their Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas stalls. “I really would love to know how much money this kiosk has raised for the hospital since it opened in 1964. It

would have to be more than a million dollars in today’s currency,” Ms Lewthwaite said. “The good news is that it will continue to contribute to the wellbeing of Kempsey’s hospital patients, and hopefully we can continue to attract new members who want to help us create handcrafted items to sell at our hospital stalls. “We also hope our membership will grow. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends and spend time with old friends. In fact, I’d say that while fundraising for the hospital has been our focus, the unexpected bonus has been the strong friendships that have been forged over the years. “We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful group of volunteers who have been supported in their fundraising efforts by a very generous business community and local residents. The staff at the hospital are also fantastic – always supportive and always appreciative of what we do.” A morning tea for past and present UHA members and Pink Ladies will be held at 10am on June 30 to celebrate the contribution the Daisy Turner Kiosk has made to Kempsey District Hospital over its 53-year history.

THE slight improvement in the weather only attracted a miserly 14 players for our Wednesday’s club select triples. With the best margin on the day of +9 were Len Noel, Allan Edwards and Ron Sharman. Friday’s nominated pairs attracted 8 teams for a pleasant afternoon of bowls. The winners with the best margin of a lucky +26 were Alan Thornton and Bill Norris, while the runners up were the ever consistent Doug Donovan and Ray Houghton with +13. Saturday afternoon saw the completion of the 1st round of the Major Singles Championships. The winners on the day were Jim Hopcroft, Alan Lewis, Adolf Giacovani, Jeff Purdy, Mal Agnew and Bill Reid. The most hotly contested of these matches was between Jim and Paul Harrison with Jim just getting the chockies by a couple of shots. In the first of the second round matches Phil Saville prevailed over Peter McLeod 31-20. Sunday’s popular Jackpot Triples attracted 16 teams for play in cool and blustery conditions. The winners with +27 were Tom Cooper, John Arndell and Phil Saville, while runner up way back on +26 was the Lewis Clan, Jack, Alan and John. The margins were the spread of 2 to 27 with lucky number to come up being 4. Also being lucky to win by 4 were Lance, Alby and Smiley who managed to walk away with this month’s jackpot of a grand in club dollars. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also be accepted and Wednesday afternoon single entry club select triples also at 1pm. Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to register for both of these events. Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning will see the 2nd round in the Major Singles Championships contested so please refer to the notice board for the draw. A reminder that all championships are conducted on a play or forfeit basis.

PENNANTS: The draw for the grade 1 state

activities and competition. Now in its twelfth year, the Hurley BL’s Blast Off attracts the largest field of any kids surfing event in the world, with participants taking part in a unique format that focuses on coaching and performance improvement. In this spirit, all entrants are offered advice and coaching regardless of their age and heatplacement, in a supportive, fun and interactive environment. To further inspire young surfers, the event sees participation from some of surfing’s all-

time-greats – from ex-world champions Layne Beachley, Tom Carroll, Rabbit Bartholomew and Damien Hardman, to former World Masters champ Terry Richardson, and Hurley younggun Cooper Chapman. The Hurley BL’s Blast Off is open to boys and girls aged 14 years and under who have some surfing experience. Entrants must be able to paddle into and catch waves for all divisions except for the 6-and-unders. With only 350 spots available, the event is a sell-out each year.

THE Macleay District Motor Cycle Club’s 27th annual Akubra Classic is on this weekend at Greenhill Speedway, Kempsey. This is a great opportunity for local riders to compete against the best from across the country. Many Australian and state champions have come to compete for the prize of the Akubra Hat and it is still proving to be one of the popular events to participate at or just be a part of as a spectator. Kempsey is the home of the Akubra Hat, who are sponsors of this event, with Australian Pet Boarding. The Akubra prize is what most of the senior riders are seeking. The challenge for them is to make it through to the final, than battle it out for 10 laps to be on that podium and claim their Akubra. Events details: Date: Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of June 2017 Venue: Greenhill Speedway, Alverton St Kempsey NSW Time: Gates open 8am Entry: $10 per day Children under 12yrs FREE Canteen facilities are available over the weekend.

GOLF ROUND UP Kempsey Ladies

THE 2017 Club Championships are already proving to be a tightly contested event. Round one was held on 7th June with some great results. Pam Bruce has already marked her territory in Division 1, coming in on 85 gross over Nel Campling on 90. The next two rounds will be worth watching. Nel’s determination won’t fade and Jennie Preston is lurking in the shadows! Division 2 could be anyone’s game this year. Wendy Halpin has returned after a break and played strongly to come in with 97 gross on a count back over Robin Taylor. Sharron McNamara, Kerry Cashman and Lauren Watts are all playing strongly and are well in contention for the trophy. All three of these ladies are relatively new to the game and are being closely observed by some of the more experienced players like Nancy McNamara, Jill Stringer and Cheryle Cashman. After a shocking start, Wendy Rogan redeemed herself and is leading the field in Division 3. The nett winners on the day were Wendy Halpin (71) and Sharron McNamara (70). Nearest the pin winners were Robin Taylor (8th), Sharron McNamara (11th) and Nel Campling (16th).

Hastings Ladies

DAMP course conditions and a slight shower didn’t deter the ladies from playing the front nine at Port Macquarie with a stroke round monthly medal and least putts competition. The winner in Div.1 was Gaylene Fielding with 35 nett and runner up was Marie Horan with 41 nett. Division 2 winner was Dot Ball with 37 nett and runner up was Volli Peacock with 39 nett. Division 3 winner was Gwen Staveley with 47 nett and runner up was Reta Maguire with 54 nett.N.T.P. on the 5th was Kim Stonestreet, least putts were Volli Peacock and Dot Ball both with 15 while gobblers were recorded by Gaylene Fielding, Dot Ball, Betty Waterer and Volli Peacock. Log-jam for a place in 8 UNFORTUNATLEY Your Local Independent went to press before Wednesday night’s Origin blockbuster – but by now we will know whether the series is dead or the Maroons have forced it to the decider. The result also has a large bearing on those teams with heavy commitments to Origin. Mentally players will have ‘switched off’ to a degree in relation to SOO or will be preparing for the decider. This obviously will affect their club football. You can’t have your mind in two places. And footy games are won or lost depending on where players’ mental game is. Seven games in the NRL this weekend. Round 16. Where did the season go? It’s getting to that make-or-break scenario as we approach the final third of the season. Always timely to check the ladder. The Storm continue to be the model of consistency, even

despite their Origin commitment. They are two games clear on 26 points. The Roosters have stamped their credentials, currently sitting in second, while the Cowboys have felt the loss of JT and the Origin scourge and are back in seventh. What is interesting is the log-jam between sixth and 12th. Just four points separate seven teams. These are the sides who can either make a charge now, all the way to a premiership, or disappear into a forgotten season. Let’s tip some winners. Warriors v Bulldogs (Friday, June 23, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Crucial match for both. They each are on 14 points so this is personal. Josh Reynolds looks like returning for the Dogs, while Kieran Foran may be missing with injury. The Dogs have been strangely inconsistent this season, but are fresh from a bye. The Warriors appear to have had an ordinary

season, but are still in the fight. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Tigers v Titans (Friday, June 23, 7.50pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): 14th (Titans) v 16th (Tigers). The Titans are still hurting from injuries and put in a very ordinary performance against the Rabbits last weekend. Meanwhile, the Tigers were very competitive against the Sharks. Home ground to give the edge. • Your Local Independent tips: Tigers Cowboys v Panthers (Saturday, June 24, 3pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): IF JT survives Origin, then the Cowboys are a big chance of getting a ‘w’ here. They were pipped by a point against the Sharkies last weekend while the Panthers had a bye. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Raiders v Broncos (Saturday, June 24, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Will the real Raiders please stand up. Ricky has had a bye

week to get his team mentally right. Broncos will miss Milford, but have not as many players on Origin duty. This is a close one. But on a chilly late afternoon in Canberra, we’ll give the Raiders another chance. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Roosters v Storm (Saturday, June 24, 7.30pm, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide): One versus two. And in Adelaide, which basically hands the home advantage back to the Storm. Melbourne will have a number of Origin players still sore from Wednesday night, but their consistency is just too hard to ignore. Every chance the Roosters will get up, but you have to go with the favourites. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Dragons v Knights (Sunday, June 25, 2pm, UOW Jubilee Oval, Sydney): The Dragons’ hot run continued to falter last weekend, but they have been handed the next best thing to a bye, a clash with the hapless Knights. Lose here and St George Illawarra can kiss their season gone. • Your Local Independent tips: 23rd – 25th June 2017 Dragons Friday 23rd June, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium Sharks v Sea Eagles (Sunday, Warriors vs Bulldogs Friday 23rd June, 7.50pm, Campbelltown Stadium June 25, 4pm, Southern Cross Group Wests Tigers vs Titans Stadium, Cronulla): Three versus five Saturday 24th June, 3pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium in another top clash. Sharks snuck Cowboys vs Panthers Saturday 24th June, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium home by two points over the Tigers Raiders vs Broncos last weekend in a bit of a form wobble, Saturday 24th June, 7.30pm, Adelaide Oval while Manly had the bye. The bookies Roosters vs Storm have the Sharks as warm favourites, but Sunday 25th June, 2pm, UOW Jubilee Oval Dragons vs Knights the Sea Eagles are unbeaten since Rd Sunday 25th June, 4pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium 10 (OK a couple of byes there).
