Who rules this nest?

Has the pesky Noisy Miner (above right) taken over the Mid North Coast as the most common bird species, or does the beautiful Rainbow Lorikeet still rule? You can help in finding out by taking part in BirdLife’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count. See story Page 6.

A more local council By BARBARA DYER

A PROPOSAL has been revealed to divide Port Macquarie Hastings region into smaller wards, allowing local issues to be handled by neighbourhood committees liaising with Council. The creation of Local Area Committees would follow a model used throughout the rest

of Australia and overseas, which is proving successful in addressing neighbourhood concerns more effectively. The Residents Action Network (RAN) will take its proposal to a public meeting on Monday night at Port City Bowling Club. “The local area committees would comprise residents who will liaise with council on matters

affecting their area,” said RAN president Hilton King. Issues would include commenting on Development Applications and helping find resolutions to problems relating to roads, trees, parks and public areas. “We propose to have seven committees to deal with issues that are specific to local

Bikers were pretty in pink ... and also helping out a great cause RIDERS never need an excuse to ride, but most male riders do need an excuse to wear pink. The recent annual Pink Ribbon Ride coordinated by rider Leonie Turner saw even the blokes in the pink from top to toe. The annual fund-raising ride for the National Breast Cancer Foundation becomes a sea of pink from Port Macquarie, through Wauchope, Kew, Laurieton and to Bonny Hills for lunch. This year’s pink parade raised almost $2100 which Leonie said would go directly to helping those with cancer. She said while visually the ride created plenty of interest, it also raised awareness as well as funds for breast cancer research. “Considering the weather, we were lucky to actually have some sunshine on Sunday and it was great to have so many people turn out to enjoy the day,” she said. There were prizes for the best dressed male and female participants as well as for the best dressed rider and pillion. Breast Cancer Network Australia figures reveal that in 2016 15,930 women and 150 men were diagnosed with breast cancer, and on average, 43 women daily will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

MNC rising rent pain Poverty Week highlights issue

RISING rents across NSW is causing homelessness ‘hotspots’ including within the Mid North Coast. People from all walks of life are being affected by the lack of affordable rental accommodation, which has been highlighted during Anti-Poverty Week from October 14-20. “People are having to pay out a significant amount of their income on rent,” said Robin Osborne, the region’s Communications Manager from St Vincent de Paul Society. “It’s not just people on government support either, it’s also people working in jobs. “It’s also happening in places that don’t seem like the obviously poor places on the Mid North Coast - a lot of it is hidden. Homelessness gets a lot of national coverage in the cities, but the hidden homelessness problem is more of an issue here than the public places like on the trains in Sydney.” Robin says people here are couch surfing in crowded households, sleeping in cars in car parks, and staying in caravan parks and camping grounds and on the beach. “On the North Coast, every Local Government Area has a child poverty rate of about 20 per cent, with a total of more than 80,000 people experiencing poverty, and a further 38,500 being

at risk of it,” said Michael Timbrell, St Vincent de Paul Society’s North Coast Executive Officer. “Rental affordability is a chronic problem, leaving many people homeless or on the verge of homelessness, struggling to support their families. The recent Affordable Housing Income Gap report produced by Compass Housing Services showed that five of the six most unaffordable LGAs for rentals in regional NSW are in the North Coast. “The least affordable area was Byron Shire where median rent was $590 per week. The weekly household income required to cover this rent without experiencing housing stress – defined as more than one-third of household income - was $1967, whereas actual median income was only $1218. This means 48% of income is needed to cover the median rent.” Other North Coast LGAs facing rental stress were Ballina ($450 pw median rent, $1500 pw required household income, $1022 median household income, 44% of income required to pay median rent), Clarence Valley ($350 $1167, $907, 39%), Tweed Shire ($430, $1433, $1182, 36%), Coffs Harbour ($395, $1317, $1125, 35%), and Port Macquarie ($390, $1300, $1148, 34%). “This means a high number of renters are

facing housing insecurity, even homelessness, and rely on modest incomes or government support to cover basics such as food, school costs and high power bills,” added Mr Timbrell. Many people are finding themselves victim to the great place they live in. “I think a lot of people living in cities look at the North Coast with a bit of a rose-tinted view of it because when they come here they actually realise that there are a number of things here that cost more. “One of the big problems here is transport. If you live outside a major town here, like Wauchope or Laurieton, and you’ve got to come down to the doctors, public transport is very limited, so you need a car, and petrol is often more expensive in country areas than the city. It looks like it would be cheaper but when you mount it up it’s actually not at all. “There are a number of older people as well and there is an emerging trend in homelessness with older women who might have been in the workforce for a long time but haven’t accumulated very much super.” For more information about Anti-Poverty Week from October 14-20 visit www. antipovertyweek.org.au/

Williams hears all sides of rat debate on LHI AS the arguments for and against aerial baiting to eradicate the rodent population on Lord Howe Island continue to divide residents on the island, Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams is hearing all views. However, the office of the MP says Mrs Williams has never expressed support for either side of the rodent debate, pointing out that decision is not hers to make, but it is up to the Lord Howe Island Board and Gabrielle Upton, Minister for the Environment. “This has been a much-debated issue on Lord Howe Island for some time,” Mrs Williams said. “As always I will continue to advocate for all Islanders in line with their personal views relating to the proposed rodent eradication. “I have received petitions both for and against aerial baiting and I have forwarded them to the Minister for the Environment for her consideration. “At my invitation the Minister joined me on a visit to the Island this year to meet with local residents to hear first-hand their varying views on the matter.”

Parking solution a must

DAYLIGHT Saving has been thrust upon us, heralding that the tourist (terrorists) season is about to besiege us local drivers. As it is now, getting a parking space in Port Macquarie CBD and at the Base Hospital is painstakingly painful. Nothing has been done since last year when we saw the population swell to majestic proportions and trying to get a park meant a constant drive around, with tempers flaring and road rage instances in the main street a regular spectacle as a result of frustration. The cost of fuel and the high risk of panel damage to your car - it’s just not worth it. So people avoid coming into town. But you can’t avoid having to go to the Base Hospital where parking is worse than the CBD. You park in Highfield Circuit and you risk the council booking you. So what can our local State member and Mayor do about this dilemma. Well, for the sake of sanity in this town the council should consider a seven-storey car parking station on the Plaza Car Park. Get rid of that eyesore old building. Have a Fisherman’s Wharf at ground level

facing the water and on Williams Street have specialty shops - one could be a souvenir shop that we have lost. The car park at the hospital should be a five storey car park and the land they are considering to be a single level car park should be used to house medical practitioners’ rooms and facilities and all those rooms in Highfield Circuit with limited parking should be moved there. Highfield Circuit is too narrow a street to accommodate all that traffic. The people of Port have had a free lunch for far too long and there has been a lack of motivation by the Council and Government, when it comes to parking. We all have to get real. The Stations should be leased out to private persons, working to a Government recommended charges schedule. We should pay for the privilege of parking somewhere secure and out of the weather. This is the only solution that is practical in my opinion and long overdue. Raymond G McDonald Address supplied

Thumbs Up CONGRATULATIONS to Jeannette Rainbow and the Wauchope District Historical Society for a wonderful trip to Bago Mountain on Wednesday, October 3. It was exactly 200 years to the day that John Oxley climbed Bago Bluff and discovered the Hastings River. Australian Wilderness Tours provided an informative and exciting trip, complete with a delicious morning tea. This was only one of 40 special events arranged by the Society, all self-funded, to celebrate Oxley’s exploration of our beautiful area. Their efforts enabled the community of the Hastings to share in this important part of our history. Well done! Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. All submissions must include a full name, address and daytime phone number. Contributions over the telephone will not be accepted. TO the two motorists who on Monday morning of the long weekend drove in the kerb side lane down the Oxley Highway towards Wauchope contrary to the displayed signage that they should have continued straight on towards Lake Innes. No Police about as usual. Happens all the time.

Thumbs Down TO the four people using the Historic Wooden Marker as a stunt piece in Port Macquarie recently. Three of you were wearing white and blue/black t-shirts and one in a safety shirt. It is not a place to perform stunts on pedal bikes. Use the skate park.

Sandy Mackenzie message I’ve ever had to listen to on a business number, I hope you feel better about yourself – I’m just glad I heard it because, quite frankly “ F$*k you, f$*k your paper, f$*k your Facebook and f$*k off” is not appropriate in anyone’s book. No matter how pissed off you are. To the few entitled who left messages like “Where’s my paper – who do you think you are not giving me my TV Guide/crossword/ Sudoku?” I’m glad you love the paper and all the things it provides you FREE each week but, really? A copy of the Your Local Independent is not a God-given right. In future, perhaps stop and think. Is there really enough reason to make a call to abuse people because you couldn’t get your FREE paper for one week? Unfortunately, this ungrateful demanding attitude just makes me want to stop producing the paper at all – these are calls that make me question why I bother putting myself through the hard work and heartache to get it out there! I also heard a few things on the good old grapevine – here’s the truth straight from the horse’s mouth - no, a staff member didn’t die, there’s been no accidents and no I haven’t closed the doors. We had no phones for over five days – thank you Telstra – end of story! Thankfully, I’m a rather resilient, persistent bitch and not about to throw in the towel yet! There’s always a light at the end of a tunnel, it’s just that sometimes we have to take one step forward and two steps back to reach the end of the tunnel. It’s not always easy sailing but there’s always a breakthrough on the other side of the storm. You’ve just got to snorkel through the crap!

TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. How ironic to read that a new “Koala Recovery Strategy” has been approved “to address the alarming decline in our local Koala population”. When an overview of the Hastings shows large tracts of bushland like Thrumster, Bonny Hills, Beechwood, Kew etc. bulldozed clean of any flora and fauna in the way of “progress”. Who has given developers the right to take the easy way of cleaning, wiping out every tree, blade of grass, every habitat down to bare earth? Will they be satisfied when we are reduced to just another “concrete jungle”?

Thumbs Down TO a local real estate office who refused to contact a tenant of theirs about their two barking dogs. They said it was not their problem. In other words, too bad if the dogs annoyed the neighbours. Very ordinary!

Thumbs Up TO Miss Dale Velvet-Rose and the Pin-Up girls who display good taste, good manners, and the best of vintage clothes, as well as a social conscience and donations to cancer research.

SMALL business is hard yakka at the best of times. It’s the backbone of our country with many small businesses run singlehandedly or by a husband and wife team, often hoping and praying all their hard work will pay off and perhaps leave a legacy for their children and or grandchildren. Small business is also the most vulnerable when it comes to dealing with larger corporations and can come unstuck over the smallest of things – no matter how prepared you think you are. My column last week was a prime example of exactly this and it dragged out some pretty interesting conversations. To all of the people who have left messages about a bad experience with Telstra, that I haven’t had time to return – please email your story to sandy@ylinews.com.au with Telstra in the subject line. I’m sorry but I can’t physically return all the calls and put the paper out however if I have info on emails I’ll be able to collate it into one file and see where I can take it from there. To all the people who have left messages of support and encouragement – thank you! I really do appreciate your well wishes, they inspire me to keep going. I have also been amazed by the handful of readers and advertisers who contacted me, just to see if I was OK – wow! That makes me feel truly valued in our community, rather than someone who is expected to provide something for the pleasure of others. There were also a lot of readers asking how they could help as they didn’t want to lose the paper – I’ll come back to you on that! And then come the knockers! Of course you’re always going to have to take the good with the bad and I get my fair share of pummelling every week – I expect it – I live by the fact you can only please some of the people some of the time. Sometimes though I’m not just going to sit there and take it, which means my line in the sand has been crossed. So, to the old guy who left the most abusive

WALK alongside hundreds of locals and ‘Reclaim the Night’. The Mid North Coast Local Health District will be holding their annual ‘Reclaim the Night’ march, supporting the community’s right to feel safe at night. “A few of our key messages are mainly about safety at night. We should be able to walk anywhere at night and feel safe in our community,” said Jane Newman from Women’s Health Mid North Coast. “The march also has a focus in particular on stopping violence against women. We have involvement with the police, Council, TAFE, Headspace, as well as our health service, so it has a real community aspect to it. “I think it’s also important for young people to be able to feel that the community is saying no to violence of all forms.” The event has been going for 15 years and brings in over 200 people from Port Macquarie and surrounding towns such as Wauchope and Camden Haven. This year it will take place on Thursday October 25. “It’s a family event so we have kids and parents and lots of people from the community joining in,” Jane said. “People don’t have to do the whole walk either. If they want to join in half way they can. It’s up to them and what their capacity is.” The event also shows the community that there are support services out there to help men and women who have been victims of violence. “Violence is pretty common everywhere, but we want people to know that we don’t tolerate or accept violence in our community,” Jane explains. “There will also be white paper lanterns that will light the way, putting the light on violence.” Renee Bell, MNCLHD Domestic Violence Prevention Educator said: “We all have the right to feel safe at night, no matter where we are, what we are wearing or if we are walking

Can we count on you for bird watch? YOU don’t have to be a bird expert to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. Join in with thousands of people across Australia who will be taking part in BirdLife’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count and see if the Rainbow Lorikeet is still the most common bird. “This isn’t just for birdwatchers, but it’s for people who have a bit of an interest in birds but don’t feel confident in doing a detailed bird survey,” explains Holly Parsons from BirdLife Australia. “The survey allows us to get a snapshot in time, to see year after year how all our birds are faring. We work a lot with local councils getting the information out to them and that can really help with planning their revegetation areas. It allows people also to see at a local level what’s going on in their bird communities.” This is BirdLife’s fifth bird count and takes place during National Bird Week from October 22-28. This year the organisation hopes to count more than 2 million birds in seven days. Counting birds has become easier with the new BirdLife Aussie Bird Count app.

“There are features built into the app so even if you’re not confident with what you’re seeing, there are ways for you to find out an accurate species name,” Ms Parsons said. “It’s a learning tool for people and an important data set for us. It’s absolutely aimed for anybody who has an interest in birds.” Last year Australian birdwatchers recorded more than 578 species, with the Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner and Australian Magpie remaining Australia’s most counted birds. The count saw more than 72,000 nature-loving Australians count more than 1.9 million birds.

“I think we are still going to see your Rainbow Lorikeets, your Magpies, your Noisy Minors, and your Cockatoos, as the most common birds along the East Coast,” said Ms Parsons. “I think it gets interesting when you go a little bit further down the list and you are seeing how some of those smaller birds are doing that are really not as common in urban areas. The Aussie Bird Count app is available at aussiebirdcount.org.au and allows people to take part in the survey anywhere, including local parks, etc.

RAN’s ‘local’ plan

• From Page 1 “For example, residents in parts of Port Macquarie have more concerns with fruit bats than others; residents in Wauchope and Laurieton have their own issues. “These would be issues a local area committee could take on.” RAN secretary Greg Franks put the idea forward and said area committees had existed in councils around Australia for decades. “I was president of Eden Area Committee in the Bega Valley Shire Council,” he said. “Great Britain has had area committees in every Local Government Area. The role of such committees is essentially one of advice and consultation, local representation and providing a conduit to local neighbourhoods regarding matters that concern them. “In Port Macquarie Hastings district this would help residents preserve the unique character of their local area, which can sometimes be negatively affected by more generalised Council policies made to cover the whole region. “The area committee’s president or secretary would liaise with the media, and see that appropriate matters are brought to public attention. “We propose seven area committees to cover the Port Macquarie Hastings area, based on a Council population and geographical map. “There could be fewer committees covering larger areas or more covering smaller areas. “For example, North Port area committee

could cover the Hastings River, North Shore, the Canals, the CBD and Town Beach. “West Port area committee could cover Westport, Lake Innes, Sovereign Hills and Thrumster. “East Port area committee could cover Flynn’s Beach, Shelley Beach, Bellevue Hill and Transit Hill. “South Port area committee could cover Lighthouse Beach, Green Meadows and surrounds. “Wauchope area committee could include Kings Creek, Sancrox and areas west of the Highway. “Laurieton area committee could include Camden Haven, Kew and Kendall. “Lake Cathie area committee could include Bonnie Hills and surrounding regions.” Mr Franks said committees could meet monthly and the only requirement would be that those on the committee were locals with an interest in improving and protecting the character of their local area. “Committee members would not be required to have prior experience or qualifications,” he said. “They would consider significant Development Applications and advise Council of any objections. They would consider issues raised by other residents, or council, relating to their local area. “Each committee would consist of 8 to 12 members who live in that area.”

Hilton King said he expected such a committee would be well supported by residents as it would be of benefit to their neighbourhood. “It works everywhere else,” he said. “Here we have a lot of retirees with the time and the motivation to join a local area committee.” He said some people had moved to Port Macquarie and joining an active and proactive community group was a way for them to become part of their new hometown. He said Council was passionate about the proposal and keen for just such a network which encouraged communication between residents and Council. “And we would love to see a councillor appointed to each area committee.” Mr King said the local area committees would support existing progress associations. Guest speakers at next week’s meeting will be former Chief Town Planner at Wollongong City Council David Winterbottom who single-handedly set up all the neighbourhood committees in Wollongong. With Port Macquarie Hastings Council mayor Peta Pinson away in Armidale, Cr Lisa Intemann will deputise. “There will be a question and answer session afterwards and people may wish to nominate themselves as members of a proposed committee,” said Mr Franks. The public meeting is on Monday, October 22 at 5.45pm, Port City Bowling Club.

Local student on charity drive CHRISTMAS will be a little bit brighter for farmers thanks to a young local student. 17-year-old Jenni Cooper from Hastings Secondary College’s Westport Campus took action into her own hands after attending the Luminosity Youth Summit, a youth leadership and excellence conference. “I heard of the Buy a Bale campaign and I wanted to help the farmers too,” explains Jenni. “I’m big into raising awareness for mental health and hearing all the suicide statistics with the farmers, I knew I had to do something. “Christmas is supposed to be a happy time and I don’t want them to miss out on the joy of Christmas because of the drought.” Jenni, now in year 12, was inspired by a speaker from Bellingen who runs a charity, working with young people who want to ‘change the world’ through various projects. A young girl from Gunnedah asked the speaker a question. ‘How do I help my community which is in drought?’ “I think people were surprised that a 17-yearold girl decided to do this for someone else,” Jenni said. “Everyone has been super positive and happy and wanting to help out. I’ve got all the Hastings public primary and high schools involved and I’m also sharing it within the football communities and even my sister’s university group in Sydney. I’m just letting everyone I know that I’m raising funds for the farmers.” Jenni has been working with the Port Macquarie West Rotary Club. The Rotarians have given her access to stuffed toy sheep, which can be sold to raise money. So far, thanks to the support of local Rotary clubs, over $1000 worth of sheep have been sold. The goal is to raise enough funds to provide a gift of $200 worth of vouchers for at least 100 farming families in the Gunnedah area. The vouchers would come from local businesses in the Gunnedah area, helping them in these drought-challenged times. “I had no plans on doing anything like this, I was just thinking I was going to be focusing on year 12,” said Jenni. “Luminosity was amazing and I’m hoping to go next year as well. I encourage people to go in with an open mind.” The sky’s the limit for Jenni Cooper. “After school I want to go to university to do a Bachelor of Communications, Social and Political Science and a Bachelor of International Studies, which would mean I would do a year overseas,” said Jenni. “I think I will probably spend a year volunteering building schools overseas.” Jenni and her school peers will be making arrangements for a fundraising event at Westport campus. Jenni challenges all schools in the Hastings area to hold a fundraiser too and to donate to Jenni’s Festive Farmers’ fund. Email Jenni for more details on how to donate at cooperfamily5@aapt.net.au

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson During the recent school holidays it was great to see our community, and lots of visitors out enjoying the spring sunshine… and it’s hard to believe there are only 63 more sleeps until the Christmas school holidays when our visitors will be knocking on the door again! The recent rain has also been welcomed, and our gardens are certainly starting to spring to life, we just all pray that our farmers who need the rain most are getting their fair share. If you’re planning to get out and about, our website pmhc.nsw.gov.au is a handy place to find places to go, and things to see and do. Make sure you check out our nifty interactive maps while you’re there, they’re a little like a Google map, where you have a birds-eye view of our region, and can see

things that are going on, services and facilities in an easy way. The maps that we’ve developed so far include our Parks, Playgrounds and Reserves. You can see where they are, including what equipment and facilities are at each one so you can decide which park, playground or reserve might be suitable for your next adventure. There’s a map of our Community Halls and even one for where our community Exercise Equipment is located. Our Walking Trails map is really popular, and you’ll be surprised just how many great options there are for those that enjoy a walk… from accessible walks to all day hikes. We’ve also got a map so you can see all the Bridges across our region that have been upgraded or replaced, those that are currently underway and those that are planned for work in the near future. Our Footpaths map provides similar information,

pmhc.nsw.gov.au and you can see where new footpaths are planned to be constructed during the coming year. We’re adding new maps all the time, and we’ll let you know through our Facebook page when new ones become available. And don’t forget to like us on Facebook, we provide information on a daily basis on lots of different topics, and it’s a great way to stay in touch with the many things that are going on in our community. And if you have an idea for a new map, just let us know and we’ll look into it for you. Our website address is pmhc.nsw.gov.au, so like our visitors during the holidays, please get out and explore the beautiful region we all call home. Until next week, Peta.

Garden Rambles sure to continue By SUE PATERICK BOUTS of drizzling rain couldn’t dampen the appeal of display gardens from around the Mid North Coast at the inaugural Garden Rambles in the Macleay last weekend. The washed-clean air was filled with bird song and bonhomie as visitors wandered seven of the Macleay Valley’s best gardens, marvelling at all the colour and imagination. Each amazing garden was as individual as its creator, and visitors left inspired with new ideas and a zest to go home and design something wonderful in their own backyard. The green-thumbed owners who opened up their gardens to the public served garden advice with a smile, and in some cases morning and afternoon tea or a sausage sandwich. Plants and raffle tickets were for sale and not one person complained about the rain because it was such good weather for gardening. Apart from scores of Macleay Valley locals, visitors came from Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Bellingen and Coffs Harbour. Tina and Rod Dowling from Wauchope were having a great day. Garden Four in South Kempsey was the first stop on their magical Garden Rambles. “Shirley’s garden opened my heart with its colour and eclectic range,” Tina said. “It was a garden of joy just like Shirley.” Kempsey locals Lorraine Allison and Barbara Paterson were also enjoying Garden Two. “It’s a peaceful and serene experience,” Lorraine said, sitting under a shady tree amidst a rainbow of flowering plants. “It’s beautiful,” said Barbara.

The Dowlings were also raving about the formal gardens of Garden One overlooking the Macleay River in Kempsey where I caught up with them. Garden One’s well-established garden spans a double block surrounding a stunning Victorian home. Exploring this gorgeous setting was like stepping back in time. The Wilson family from Port Macquarie enjoyed discovering what lay in the subtropical, Balinese-inspired acreage of Garden Two. Neil Wilson said they had only started gardening seriously last year and Garden Two was giving them all, even their three children, ideas to try at home. Co-founder of the Garden Rambles in the Macleay, Mary Sweeney, thought the weekend went fabulously. “Everyone was so enthused by all the gardens, whether large or small,” she said. “And we had a steady flow of visitors through all the gardens.” Mary was astounded to learn her last visitor of the day on Sunday came from Newcastle and was on her way home. Those of us who marvelled at all the gardens over the weekend hope it becomes an annual event. “There was a lot of enthusiasm from all the visitors for the event to continue,” Mary said. In fact, six more avid gardeners volunteered to open up their gardens too next time. Apart from Mary and fellow co-founder Kim Buckingham, the Garden Rambles in the Macleay’s management committee includes David and Di Woods and Di Woodward.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

Business gets early tax relief ADDITIONAL tax relief for small and medium businesses will be delivered five years earlier than planned. This is good news for many local employers - lower company tax means more investment, more jobs and higher wages. We will introduce legislation during this session of Parliament, fast-tracking our business tax relief for local small and medium businesses. Across the country, this will provide tax relief for more than three million businesses that employ nearly seven million Australians. This means businesses with a turnover below $50 million will face a tax rate of just 25 per cent in 2021-22 rather than from 2026-27 as currently legislated. Similar timing changes will apply to the roll out of the 16 per cent tax discount for unincorporated businesses. By fast-tracking this tax relief for businesses, we will make a more immediate difference to the individual businesses and the people who work for them. This means that a small business, such as an independent supermarket or a pub that makes $500,000 profit, will have an additional $7,500 in 2020-21 and $12,500 in 2021-22 to invest back into the business or staff, or help to manage cash flow. This builds on the first stage of company tax relief that our Government delivered in May 2017. Our economic plan is delivering for our region, and the fast tracking of tax relief for small and medium businesses is an important investment in the future economic growth of our nation. The Federal Coalition will make a medication for severe inflammatory spinal arthritis more affordable for patients when it is listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), saving patients more than $15,000 a year. Almost 4,000 patients across Australia who are suffering from active nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis will benefit when Simponi (Golimumab) becomes available on the PBS on December 1. Patients who would have had to pay over $1,300 per script will only pay a maximum of $39.50 per script, or only $6.40 if they have a concession card.

Trader Check is peace of mind CONSUMERS To Save Millions With Trader Check: Trader Check – a free, online one stop shop of information about traders – will put NSW consumers first and help businesses that do the right thing to compete. Trader Check is part of the NSW Government’s Better Business Reforms to empower consumers and make sure the economy is working for everyday people. This is great news for NSW consumers. This website will become the first port of call for anyone who needs to hire a tradie or buy from a business. We’re making it easier for consumers to check whether the tradie they’re hiring is fair dinkum before they let them into their homes and hand over their hard-earned cash. Trader Check will save consumers tens of millions of dollars by helping them avoid unlicensed traders who do defective, dodgy work that often needs expensive rectification. Under the current system, consumers must search multiple websites to find the information they need about business histories and licensees, and not all information is made public. The online register is part of the Better Business Reforms, the biggest shake up of NSW consumer law in more than three decades. The Better Business Reforms will be introduced into Parliament later this month.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

THERE are over 20,000 small businesses on the Mid North Coast. They are the lifeblood or our local economy as they are for the country. Small business is responsible for over 40% of jobs. And they are not necessarily made up the way many of us might expect. Almost half of the 680,000 plus small businesses in New South Wales are single person operations. For many sole traders, their office is often their home. If you are a small business person reading this, your local Chamber of Commerce is a huge repository of accumulated business wisdom. Chamber people know business backwards, from the basics of start-ups to keeping your operation on track and in the black. They provide crucial advice and support in dealing with staff, with savings strategies, legal issues, marketing, recruitment, export support, and even how to get your energy bills down. Local Chambers of Commerce do a magnificent job in supporting and growing small business on the Mid North Coast and right across Australia. If you are involved in a start-up, or want help with your business, join your local Chamber.

Gentlemen for a very long time GENTLEMAN goes back a long way, untiI at least 1275. In modern parlance, a gentleman from gentle and man is any man of good, courteous conduct. Originally, a gentleman was a man of the lowest rank of the English gentry, standing below an esquire and above a yeoman. This category included the younger sons of the younger sons of peers and the younger sons of baronets, knights, and esquires in perpetual succession. The fundamental idea of ‘gentry’, symbolised in the grant of coat-armour, had come to be that of the essential superiority of the fighting man, and, as Selden points out, the fiction was usually maintained in the granting of arms. At the last, the wearing of a sword on all occasions was the outward and visible sign of a gentleman. The custom survives in the sword worn with court dress. A suggestion that a gentleman must have a coat of arms was vigorously advanced by certain 19th and 20th-century heraldists, notably Arthur Charles Fox-Davies in England and Thomas Innes of Learney in Scotland. The suggestion is discredited by an examination, in England, of the records of the

my

High Court of Chivalry and, in Scotland, by a judgment of the Court of Session. The significance of a right to a coat of arms was that it was definitive proof of the status of gentleman, but it recognised rather than conferred such a status, and the status could be and frequently was accepted without a right to a coat of arms. Formal court titles several monarchs’ courts, various functions bear titles containing such rank designations as gentleman (suggesting it is to be filled by a member of the lower nobility, or a commoner who will be ennobled, while the highest posts are often reserved for the higher nobility). The Reform Act 1832 did its work; the middle classes came into their own, and the word gentleman came in common use to signify not a

distinction of blood, but a distinction of position, education and manners. By this usage, the test is no longer good birth or the right to bear arms, but the capacity to mingle on equal terms in good society. In its best use, moreover, gentleman involves a certain superior standard of conduct, due to “that self-respect and intellectual refinement which manifest themselves in unrestrained yet delicate manners.” The word gentle, originally implying a certain social status, had very early come to be associated with the standard of manners expected from that status. Thus, by a sort of punning process, the “gentleman” becomes a “gentle-man”. In another sense, being a gentleman means treating others, especially women, in a respectful manner and not taking advantage or pushing others into doing things they don’t wish to do. The exception, of course, is to push someone into something they need to do for their own good, such as a visit to the hospital, or pursuing a dream they have suppressed. Of course, gentleman can be used sarcastically. And yes, the word gentlewoman goes back to 1230 and is still going strong. lauriebarber, com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Look great for charity By SUE PATERICK LOOKING for the latest in spring and summer fashion while also supporting a great cause then head to the Macleay Valley Home Hospice’s annual Fashion Parade on Saturday, October 27 at Kempsey Racecourse. Once again local businesses, K&A Boutique, Just Lingerie and Arcade Shoes, have donated their fabulous fashions for this fun event. Gates open at 1pm for a 2pm start and the $10 entry fee includes afternoon tea. Commenced in 2005 to help palliative-care patients live out their lives in the comfort of their own home, the Macleay Valley Home Hospice is a non-government funded organisation run by a small group of volunteers. This wonderful charity raises funds to purchase medical equipment that is made available on loan to palliative-care patients so they can remain at home with their loved ones. The equipment available includes electricoperated beds, recliner chairs, morphine pumps, oxygen concentrators, wheelchairs, walking frames, comfortable mattresses, shower chairs, walking aides and toilet accessories. Patients need to be referred to the Palliative Care Service at Kempsey Community Health Centre and then assessed at home. A volunteer courier will then deliver and set up the necessary equipment at the patient’s home. According to Macleay Valley Home Hospice, many patients and carers often said they didn’t realise what equipment they would require and were very grateful for the Hospice’s assistance. Its President, Lesa Morrison, wanted to thank all the amazing folks who donated money throughout 2018 and to the Fashion Parade. The Macleay Valley Home Hospice is always looking for new members and meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Kempsey Uniting Church Hall Lower Hall in Wide Street West Kempsey at 5.30pm. for more information email mvhhospice@hotmail.com

Aust Day awards are now open NOMINATIONS are now open for the Macleay Valley’s 2019 Australia Day Awards to be held at the annual Kempsey Shire Council ceremony at the Slim Dusty Centre on Australia Day Eve Friday, January 25. Nominations are now open in four categories that include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (aged between 12 – 26 years), Community Group of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell believes that this year’s Award nominations will once again highlight the amazing contributions of locals to the Macleay Valley. “We’ve had an increasing number of Award nominations in the last few years as people make a conscious effort to honour those who make a difference,” said Mayor Campbell. “Last year’s Citizen of the Year, Betty Green, has continued to work tirelessly for the community and was the patron of the Seniors Festival earlier in the year, even starring in the promotional video.” So if you know someone who makes a difference to our community, volunteers their time, works tirelessly to help others or have been an outstanding representative of the Macleay Valley then nominate them for an Australia Day Award. Nominations are open until Friday, November 30, so check out and complete the easy on-line form on Kempsey Shire Council’s website at www.kempsey.nsw. gov.au/australia_day

Business PROFILE

An exciting ‘new’ Port AdVenture DAVID Lazarus has no idea who will be the first bride and groom to be married by Elvis on board his refurbished Port AdVenture catamaran. But he guarantees it will give new meaning to ‘love me tender’ as the newlyweds and 110 seated guests cruise the Hastings River and local canals. Mr Lazarus said the ‘new’ Port AdVenture had undergone a renovation from inside-out, and offered something unique for canal-cruising tourists, newlyweds, the corporate sector and anyone looking for a fun night out or top-class entertainment in the theatre. He said the Port AdVenture’s Elvis Presley was a marriage celebrant and there would be no crying in the chapel as couples exchanged vows against a backdrop of sparkling water. “We can seat 110 really comfortably or offer a cocktail style wedding reception for 140 guests on a vessel licensed to carry 200 people,” he said. From the fun-loving crowd kicking back for a 21st birthday barbecue, to the corporate Christmas party, the Port AdVenture catamaran promises to be an unforgettable venue. Named in memory of the Port Venture, also owned by David Lazarus, but which came to an untimely demise docking in Sydney, the Port AdVenture will be three venues in one. It will cater to tourists with dolphin spotting cruises, morning and afternoon two-hour scenic trips down the river or sunset cruises around the canals. Kids can also enjoy boom net fun. “We will have a schedule, but it can be flexible, offering catered events to include finger foods or a barbecue,” says Mr Lazarus. “We will also cater for corporate events

The refurbished Port AdVenture catamaran is the perfect party venue and is licensed to carry up to 200 people and special days such as Melbourne Cup and Australia Day. “And we are a floating theatre with our Mamamia ABBA tribute, The Beatles and Elvis tribute shows.” Upstairs is the lounge area with comfy seating and downstairs are tables and chairs, while outside are three areas so people can enjoy the changing views and breezes. Theatre and comedy nights offer showstopping meal options with hot and cold buffet, a cocktail menu or a barbecue as well as a fully

licensed bar. “The Port AdVenture is the biggest and most versatile charter vessel ever to service the local community,” said Mr Lazarus. “It’s a great venue for enjoying live entertainment and there will also be regular stand-up comedy cruises including the Prince of Polyester Bob Downe. “He sings, he dances and he takes very good care of his hair. He will be appearing regularly, here in Port Macquarie,” says Mr Lazarus. He and First Mate and licensee Gerry Byron

said they were very excited with the new Port AdVenture. The official launch will be on October 27 with a traditional champagne christening of the new vessel at the end of Clarence Street. The Port AdVenture will be open for inspection from 11am until 4pm and the public can enjoy 45-minute free cruises throughout the day. Complimentary tickets will be available dockside on the day, with cruises departing on the hour.

Baby care THE Mid North Coast will be home to Australia’s first regional Tresillian Residential Unit and mobile service to help new parents in the area struggling with caring for their baby. The Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said the unit will be included in the new $73 million Macksville Hospital, ensuring parents no longer have to travel to Sydney for services. “Anyone who has ever raised or cared for a baby knows the joy - and the challenges - they bring,” Mrs Pavey said. “Exhausted parents needing help with settling strategies, feeding, diet and nutrition, and behavioural issues with toddlers, can stay for up to five days in the new special unit to get support.” The Local Health District, in partnership with Tresillian, will provide families in the area with access to nurses, psychologists, social workers, paediatricians and psychiatrists. As part of the initiative, there is also a mobile ‘Tresillian 2 U – Early Parenting Service’ - a purpose-built van which will travel out to homes and health centres to offer further personalised care and support. The new Tresillian services are free.

MAKE sure you ask your neighbour how they are doing this Mental Health Month. October is Mental Health Month and WayAhead Mental Health Association is putting a big focus on loneliness. “Loneliness is a word that everyone knows, but no one has thought about the consequences of loneliness,” said WayAhead CEO Elizabeth Priestley. “If people are on their own, or you think they may be lonely, have a chat with them and connect with them. Listen to them, share their journey, ask about their life.” WayAhead is so passionate about mental health, and in particular loneliness, that they are even trying to get GPs to screen for loneliness. “We are trying to get GPs to ask their patients if they are lonely and to just check up on them,” said Elizabeth. “Loneliness can have physcial and mental health consequences and these people might just need that push to engage with others in their community, whether it be through a swimming or social group.” The theme of this year’s Mental Health

Month is ‘Share the Journey’. “While we are encouraging people to tell their story, we are also encouraging people to listen to other stories,” Elizabeth explains. “It’s a way of becoming part of a community and caring and having empathy. When you lsiten to people you learn a lot too; how to do things and how to live your life and maybe be encouraged to actually get some help too if you need help. “I think the awareness has improved through people talking about their stories – especially with celebrities, it humanises them. We still need to eradicate the negative stigma that comes along with mental health – especially the stigma that they are a lesser person because they struggle with mental health. “I’ve been involved with mental health since the early 90s and I’ve seen a huge change in people’s attitude in mental health through awareness.” Elizabeth says that mentall illness is just as important as a physical illness. “It’s the same as having a physcial illness,

whether you were born with it or you get later on in life, it’s the same with a mental health issue, you just happen to be the person that has it at this particular time and we all heal differently, some quicker than others,” Elizabeth said. “A big difference between how people treat mental health and physical health, is that when it’s a physical illness, people send flowers. When you have a mental illness, no one sends flowers.” During this Mental Health Month Elizabeth encourages people to make the effort to engage with others in the community. “Have you ever walked in the street and said hello how are you to someone and you are stood there talking to them for the next half an hour? That’s an indication that this person hasn’t spoken to many people and is just looking for people to have a chat with,” Elizabeth said. “It’s not only good for them, but it’s good for your mental health too because you feel good for helping them.” For more information about WayAhead and Mental Health Month visit http:// mentalhealthmonth.wayahead.org.au

Power win for Rohan, Aiden THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held race 3 of the spring series last Sunday in a moderate easterly breeze and the start of the run-out tide. A storm approaching from the south towards the end of the race threatened to kill the breeze and wet everyone, but thankfully it slipped around to the west. With a number of catamaran sailors away and Dave Winter on duty, the 2 catamarans sailing had Jack Corthals on Harpic zap around the course to win on yardstick ahead of Rob Barwick on Drift. Drift did beat Harpic quite well on handicap though. The much larger monohull fleet was won on yardstick by Rohan and Aiden Nosworthy in A Power, followed by Kelly Miller in Devocean, Terry Howard in Ratz, Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant, Martina Holt in Spellbound, Simon Gandy and Steve Couch in Voyager, Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Flying Fish, Charly Nosworthy in Karaoke Kid, and Alan Pogonowski and Jeff Walsh in Jupiter. Thursday Morning Ladies Social Bowls This was our 60th Birthday and Presidents Day. No bowls played due to rain but a fun day catching up with friends and 5 games of trivia kept us laughing and occupied. Thank you to all the clubs who had representation. It was so wonderful to see you all there. A guard of honour was formed for our special guests including Lesley Swailes from Bowls NSW. So many people to thank but 2 special ladies come to mind - our secretary Loraine Condello and Vice President Bette Whiting. You both did an outstanding job for our club’s special day.
