Heart-felt help By BARBARA DYER

LAURIETON resident Traci Moore recalls how it felt to be recovering from a double bypass in Prince of Wales Hospital, far away from family and with little reassuring support. It makes her appreciate the great work of the Hastings volunteer group Heart Health NSW. “When I was stuck in hospital in Sydney four years ago, I wish I’d had someone to just drop by and say hello; someone to tell me they had been through it and to support me,” Traci says. “I’d have loved someone to sit next to my bed and say, ‘I have had cardiac surgery, how are you going’. “And that is what our volunteers do here at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital. “The Heart Foundation is stoked with what we do; helping people in hospital, then through rehab and later encouraging them and carers to join our walking group.” Not all hospitals are as lucky to have this caring group of volunteers who call on their own experience with heart illness, as well as undergoing courses, to enable them to back up professional care. For the past 11 years volunteers have offered support and advice to others on the road to recovery as well as fund-raising for the hospital cardiac catheterisation laboratory. • Continued Page 6

‘Thank you’ to teachers students “whoMost go out

ONE local teacher is showing students the benefits of the road less travelled. Heidi Speers from Hastings Secondary College is using her industry experience to help students who want to pursue a career in hospitality. “Most teachers have been to school and then onto university and then back into a school setting, whereas I haven’t,” said Heidi Speers, Hospitality Program Educator at Hastings Secondary College. “I did my cheffing apprenticeship straight out of school and worked in the industry for many years before starting my study as a teacher at 28 years old.” Heidi sees first hand the results of her industry/teaching path. “Only the other day I visited one of my students in work placement at the Rainforest Café at Sea Acres, and when I was there visitng her, there were two other past students of mine there,” Heidi said. “One is now almost a qualified chef. And the other student works there every weekend. “It was just a lovely feeling to see that the kids you’ve had in the past are working in the industry that you set them up for. It’s another nice reflection of what we as teachers do in schools.” Heidi has been teaching for 13 years and because of her hospitality background, she brings something different to the table. “I bring industry experience to the Hospitality Program,” explains Heidi. “We do lots of different functions and we also look at the business side of things like ordering, budgeting, cost control, and making the product and presenting and serving the product. “We also run a café here at the school and the students take orders from all of the teachers each week and deliver the orders to the teachers. They work out the budget and profit it makes and that is then used to buy equipment for the

Educators’ role has changed dramatically over time IT’S time to celebrate our teachers. Friday (October 26) is World Teachers Day and one local school, Hastings Secondary College, is recognising the hard work and dedication their teachers give. “Our teachers play a significant and valuable role within our community,” said Kylee Owen, Executive Principal of Hastings Secondary College. “Not only are they the people who educate our youth, who in turn become leaders of the next generation, but students will learn from their teachers’ capabilities and that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We can all pinpoint those teachers that made a profound impact on our educational journey.” Teachers have been dedicating their time, inside and outside the classroom,

hospitality department. “I do tell my students that university isn’t the only option after school. They really enjoy

improve student outcomes. “Our teachers spend countless hours planning, programming and collaborating to create high-quality learning experiences”. Students and teachers at Hastings Secondary College have nominated some outstanding teachers who will be presented with an award on Friday at the Little Fish Café Port Macquarie. Hastings Secondary College’s outstanding teachers for 2018 are – Clare Farmer (year adviser), Deanna Maurer (mathematics teacher), Luke Schmitzer (science and agriculture teacher), Heidi Speers (hospitality teacher), Annie Stanford (School Liaison Officer), and Nicole Wells (language teacher). to students and the community for many years and their role has certainly changed over time. “The educator’s role has changed,” explains Kylee. “The 21st century’s new perspective on teaching and learning is all about teaching the development of knowledge and higher order skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. “The establishment of lifelong learning habits and an ability to learn-how-to-learn with technology as a key enabler is the new picture of a teacher’s classroom. “Our teachers’ roles are increasingly complex and challenging. They now manage online learning environments, individualised learning, and the provision of increasingly detailed feedback to

the work experience they do and they enjoy that interaction with the community it brings. Most students who go out on industry experience get a

job out of it too, and they thrive from it. “But I also feel that the kids get industry experience from their everyday lessons with me because I set that industry standard for them and I don’t send them out into work experience until they’re ready. And so they really strive to reach that benchmark before they go out.” Although the job of a teacher far extends schools hours, Heidi says she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love what I do,” added Heidi. “There’s a lot more hours we do at home than people realise, and if we see students on the weekend we still have a duty of care for them 24/7. So it’s not a full time job, it’s more of a lifestyle.”

LETTER WEEK OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

Nannas will not go away EVERY second Tuesday for the past year the Hastings Macleay loop of the Knitting Nannas have been sitting outside the Federal MPs office in Port Macquarie to communicate our concern about the quality of the environment our grandchildren will inherit. In particular the failure of government policy to ensure that fossil fuels are phased out faster on one hand, and to encourage the development of local industries in renewable energy on the other, to ensure a smooth transition to a carbon free economy. Our concerns fell on deaf ears. Our local Federal MP assured us that fossil fuels will be with us till 2050 and that there was plenty, in fact too much solar power being generated in the region. Furthermore, when our concerns about the environmental destruction by new mines were raised, Mr Hartsuyker reassured us that any such damage was unlikely, because of appropriate government controls. In the light of current developments at the Adani and other new mines we do not feel reassured. Recently the Special Report on limiting Global Warming to 1.5% by 2050 was released by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It has generated a lot of discussion in the

media which was a welcome relief to us Nannas who have often felt we are a lone voice on the issues affecting our environment and the increasingly unstable climate. In particular we feel vindicated by the report that our concerns are real and our demands are very much in line with its recommendations. In agreement with IPCC Report we would like to see: • Renewable Energy to become 100% source of energy by 2050; • No new coal fired power plants, because the cost of solar is already as cheap as coal; • Net deforestation stopped by 2025. The Nannas will keep sitting and knitting until the Government develops a climate change policy to enable a smooth and rapid transition to a decarbonised economy. It is high time the decision-makers give up their irrational addiction to fossil fuel. Irrational because there is so much to gain by transitioning to a decarbonised economy and so much to lose by dragging the chain. And addictive because decision-makers are driven by greedy lobbyists who donate to the party on behalf of the miners. The Knitting Nannas Hastings Macleay Loop

Thumbs Down TO all the drivers of Port Macquarie who do not care about pedestrians on our footpaths when they pull out of the many take-away drive-throughs over the footpath back onto the road and continually nearly run over pedestrians as they don’t even look/check or seem to know the rules. Also bad at exits like growers market and anywhere they exit across footpaths. I’ve nearly been hit several times while out on daily walks, so good luck to those old folk who are much slower. But thanks to the few drivers who do look out for pedestrians. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. TO Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for allowing the graffiti to continue on the latter part of the breakwall walking towards the observatory. A large number of the graffiti stones are memorials to past people. This is not a cemetery it is a place for all to enjoy. This is a beautiful walk in the park spoiled by disgusting paintings over all the rocks. We do not go into other people’s backyards and leave all our unnecessary graffiti. It is about time it was stopped so all the people who live here and the tourists who come to enjoy our beautiful Port Macquarie can go home with lovely memories.

Sandy Mackenzie small businesses. Late payers bring a world of pain to our lives and just cause a snowball effect. A couple of late payments can soon mount up to a substantial amount, especially when you’re chasing after a few clients, pool them all together and suddenly, you’re left holding the baby (of bad debtors) and struggling to pay your own bills because of it. That’s when the real fun starts! It’s all a vicious cycle and basically the result of ‘trickle down economics’ – the type of economics Donald Trump and Scott Morrison prescribe to. The big boys book up the big dollars, hold on to them as long as they can, while earning interest on the money they’re supposed to have paid for the services you’ve already given – it gets paid eventually – just not until the 11th hour, after about 60-90 days. All in all, it’s a bloody time-consuming nightmare chasing debtors. So for me, there’s only so much support I can give and stress I can take. It’s time for a change. Basically, YLI offers 14-day terms for business accounts. I can’t fund your advertising for any longer than that, especially big business. New businesses and casual advertisers will now have to pay upfront at the time of booking. Sorry but it is for self-preservation. I can’t get a new pair of jeans without paying for them first. From here on in any invoices that haven’t been paid within the 14 days will end up being publicised in the Independent with the name of business and the amount owing until the debt is paid. I have a list of a dozen businesses who fit this category presently and between them owe a substantial amount of money – this is your final warning. Either pay your bill or enjoy reading about yourself in the November 1 edition of Your Local Independent. I look forward to the response!

TO the fairly new management of a formerly very popular coffee shop. A smile from the owners would not go amiss and customers do not want to be asked ‘is that all?’ when they order a coffee. You are lucky that your young and pleasant staff do their best to be nice to customers, because they need the jobs.

Thumbs Up TO our local Port Macquarie police/detectives for their prompt action on recovering our stolen property. Their courtesy and service are much appreciated. Once again, thank you. Your service to our local community and businesses is greatly appreciated by us.

IT’S become patently obvious to me, October is just not my month! Late deliveries and Telstra have virtually brought me to my knees, not just financially but also mentally, physically and I’d be lying if I didn’t include emotionally. What a disastrous month it has been… I feel like a stuck record, but the truth of the matter is, the issues have been completely out of my control and the fallout has been catastrophic, to say the least. But onwards and upwards we must go! Soldiering on is the new motto for November! As I mentioned last week, there is always a silver lining to every cloud and although it has been a hideous month, there are lots of good thing to come out of it all … Thank God for small mercies! The support from our communities on the mid-north coast has been overwhelming! Heaps of people have been in contact, when they’ve been able to get through, to encourage me to keep going. The resounding message has been ‘we love the Independent’, ‘late is better than never’ and ‘it’s well worth the wait!’ Thank you all. I’ve also had quite a few people ask how they can help and/or how can the community help to ensure the longevity of the Independent in the current climate of the Australian media? Several people have given some good feedback with some suggesting I consider putting a price on the paper for starters. We’ve also had a flood of new advertising enquiry, which is fantastic! I’ve been blown away with the amount of potential new business that has come across my desk in the past three weeks – because they’re a small business who wants to support another small local business. It’s been quite incredible and very humbling. Thank you! I’ve always been honest and upfront about my lack of capital since I started flying solo two years ago at the time of my separation. I’m going to be brutally honest now. Cash flow is King for any small business and lack of it is one of the biggest killers of

INDUSTRY and training came together at TAFE NSW Wauchope recently to strengthen trades relationships on the Mid North Coast. The Oxley branch of the Master Builders Association (MBA) holds their Annual General Meeting at TAFE NSW Wauchope every second year, with 2018 the first year that awards were presented to first, second and third year TAFE NSW apprentices for outstanding performance. TAFE NSW Trades Teacher and Oxley MBA Secretary, Ian Chegwidden, said: “Aside from the standard AGM agenda, at the meeting we also had a trade night with trade talks, a seminar and the awards.” Mr Chegwidden has been an affiliated member of the Master Builders Association for the last

six years. Awards were presented to: Terry Morris, first year carpentry at employer Dennis Andrighetto; Eli Prescott, second year carpentry at employer Kempsey Adventist School; Tim Schmidt, third year carpentry at employer Hi Spec Constructions; Samuel Burridge, Certificate IV in Building at employer S & K Johnson Construction P/L. Each apprentice received a Makita 18-volt battery, drill and driver set, valued at $500 each. “Hosting this event is a great way for TAFE NSW to foster relationships with industry,” Mr Chegwidden said. “The event also provides an opportunity for licensed builders to gain Continued Professional Development points.”

Girls invited to ‘fire -up’ GIRLS across New South Wales are being invited to play a bigger role in emergency service organiosations. Fire and Rescue New South Wales and notfor- profit organisation Girls on Fire are hosting the inaugural Girls Fire and Emergency Services Camp in December. “The benefits of this program include improvements to self-confidence, resilience and emotional intelligence,” said Bronnie Mackintosh, FRNSW Station Officer and Girls on Fire founder. “Participants will also gain exposure to the work involved with emergency services, as well as practical and theoretical skills in problem

solving, teamwork and helping others. “The camp is also a good opportunity for participants learn the importance of community connection and experience volunteerism.” Girls aged 15 to 17 years old will attend the seven-day camp at the YMCA Camp Yarramundi from December 2-8. The girls will learn firefighting and emergency services skills and will be working in an environment to increase teamwork and leadership. They will also have the opportunity to be introduced to the possibility of a career in the emergency services. “Bronnie has volunteered at and researched the impact of the successes of the USA and

Canada girls fire camps and wanted to bring them here,” said Rebecca Smith, Senior Media Officer from Fire and Rescue New South Wales. “Bronnie wants to show girls at a vulnerable age that they can be anything they want and hopes to create life changing opportunities for young girls. “Bronnie is also passionate about firefighting and wants to expose participants to the satisfaction of working in the emergency services sector.” 20 girls will participate in a range of theoretical and practical lessons as well as extinguish simulated fires, undertake rescue operations, go abseiling, build a raft and go on an overnight hike.

“This event has the potential to create lasting social change by empowering girls at a vulnerable age as well as influencing community views about emergency services and the people who provide them,” said Bronnie. The inaugural Girls Fire and Emergency Services Camp is a multi-agency collaboration between Girls On Fire, Firefighters Mutual Bank, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service, Monash University, YMCA and the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council. Beginning to look like Christmas AS the famous Christmas carol goes: “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” That’s the sense of excitement amongst the team as they plan for The Westport Club’s flagship community event for 2018 – ‘Christmas Under The Stars’. The event, now in its 12th year, will again be held on the beautiful Hastings River foreshore in front of The Westport Club on Sunday, December 9, from 5.30pm. The Westport precinct foreshore will be smothered with blankets and chairs as the community sings and taps along to the wonderful entertainers heartily ringing out songs of Christmas. Headlining this Westport event will be entertainment ‘triple-threat’ Tim Campbell. Tim is one of Australia’s most versatile and much loved entertainers. From leading roles on Home and Away, House Husbands, and countless other TV and prime time roles, to leads in the stage productions including Wicked, Rent and Shout! Tim has just finished playing Corny Collins in the national tour of Hairspray the Arena Spectacular and most recently appeared in Channel 7’s new mini-series about the life of Olivia Newton John. He also released his chart topping sophomore album ELECTRIFYING 80s. Together with his moves on Dancing with the Stars and Carols by Candlelight confirms the awesome talent Tim brings to Christmas under the Stars. The Westport Club’s Community and Sports Manager, Jenny Edmunds, said: “We are ecstatic to have Tim back again. He was so popular two years ago. So for all those people who write to us requesting ‘bring Tim back’, we’ve listened.” Christmas under the Stars is an event for the community. The generosity of those attending truly comes to light on Christmas Day when less fortunate members of the community sit down to a lovely Christmas lunch and watch the joy on their children’s faces as they unwrap presents. This is thanks to the donation given to The Salvation Army’s local Christmas hamper appeal from the entry cost to attend the event. Commencing at 5.30pm, organisers are

Port stats are concerning RESIDENTS of Port Macquarie are being encouraged to keep a closer eye on their heart health with data from health fund HCF revealing less than one-third of local members are aware of critical heart health indicators. Last year heart health checks on 160 Port Macquarie-based members by the not-forprofit health fund found over two-thirds did not know their blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar levels. All three indicators are closely linked with heart disease.

Heart disease continues to be a major health priority in Australia. Every 12 minutes an Australian dies from cardiovascular disease. In New South Wales, over 368,000 people are affected by heart disease. HCF Port Macquarie Customer Service Manager, Kerrie Conklin, said between 2015 and 2017 more than 520 people in Port Macquarie were hospitalised with heart disease, which was about 25% above the NSW state average.

Local volunteers are full of heart The very talented Tim Campbell encouraging families and friends to arrive early to get the best vantage points for a fun-filled evening of carols, songs, activities including a large kids’ amusements, BBQ’s supporting Marine Rescue, various food stalls by local vendors, as well as coffee and sweet treats available. Santa’s arrival is always a highlight of the night as children want to say ‘hello’ and pass on any last-minute present requests. “It’s a fantastic evening of singing and performances from amazing local talents including Riley Paige, PMQ Performing Arts, Angus Gill and school choirs. The night is filled with Christmas spirit and a spectacular fireworks display from 9pm, concluding the celebration and kick-starts a magical time of the year,” Mrs Edmunds said. Detailed information on the event can be found on The Westport Club website www. thewestportclub.com.au

• From Page 1 Formerly affiliated with Canberra-based Heart Support Australia, Traci Moore said they had decided to take ownership of their successes, having donated thousands of dollars to the hospital through raffles and monthly market stalls at Laurieton. Some of the funds have gone to providing bikes and equipment for the gym where physio sessions are held. “All that we do will stay the same. It’s just a name change,” Traci said. “We support patients who are diagnosed with heart disease while in hospital, then during rehabilitation and later with our Thursday walking group to help maintain fitness. “We would love to see more people come along to walk with us on a Thursday at Port Macquarie, or we have a Monday walking group in Laurieton. “It does not matter whether they are pushing a walker and can manage only 20 steps. “We are here to support them at any stage.” Traci points out that heart disease is now the number one killer of women in Australia. She says she was aware of her own risk; her mum had died at age 52.

“So, I had a full heart check when I was 52 and the cardiologist said I was fine and my heart would carry on into my 80s.” But it was not to be and six years later, Traci was having a double bypass. She is now a regular visitor to the hospital, giving cardiac patients the reassurance and encouragement she missed during her own recovery. The visitation group is at the hospital Monday to Friday, and the rehabilitation group attends weekly, supporting the hospital rehab teams either in Port Macquarie or Kempsey, after undergoing an eight-week course. Port Macquarie Base Hospital cardiologist Dr Chris Alexopoulos is group patron. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at 10.30am in rooms at the Bonny Hills Community Church As well as walks, the group meets for social outings such as bus trips, movies and dinners. “We have a lot of fun,” says Traci. She said there were thoughts of having a kids’ unit down the track but said the group welcomed all ages.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Isn’t it great to see so many events taking place across our region that celebrate our bicentenary, and it’s so interesting to learn about our history and embrace ourselves in this important milestone for our region. There has already been a great range of commemorations, and with lots more to come I’m really looking forward to continuing the bicentenary journey over the next four years. Every community has interpreted the bicentenary in their own way, and I would like to congratulate you all for your hard work and enthusiasm. The opportunity my role as Mayor has afforded me in learning about our history has been truly inspiring, and the more events I attend the more excited I get! I really encourage everyone to get involved, immerse yourself in the many different experiences, explore our past and celebrate our bright future.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the official launch of the Comboyne Cookbook, which I’m proud to say was made possible through a Council bicentenary community grant. The cookbook is a great community initiative that celebrates our produce-rich hinterland, and lets us experience the passion of one of our iconic communities… through our tastebuds! There have been celebrations at Mt Seaview, the Governor’s Ball and Garden Party in Wauchope, and the ‘John Oxley’s Journey to Port Macquarie’ play premiere at Douglas Vale… just to name a few. I’d love to mention everything that’s happening, however the best way to stay up to date is to visit our website pmhc.nsw. gov.au/bicentenary. Council is also looking forward to continuing to support a broad range of events and activities that commemorate our bicentenary, so if you’ve got an idea, please let us know.

pmhc.nsw.gov.au And don’t forget our community celebration ‘200 Together: An Exploration through Time’ which will take place between 11am and 5pm this Sunday 28 October on the Port Macquarie Town Green. There’ll be lots to experience for all ages, including heritage and history displays where you can immerse yourselves in our past, a great line-up of entertainment, food options galore, markets to stroll through and perhaps pick up that unique gift or treat, walking tours and lots more. One of the real highlights on Sunday will be the Birpai Barray Aboriginal Experience, where you can experience our aboriginal culture through dance, story-telling, workshops and art … this will be a real treat. I hope you’ll all be able to join me over the next four years as we commemorate 200 Together, and celebrate our wonderful community. See you on Sunday, Peta.

Dr Gillespie, has now been endorsed at four elections - 2010, 2013, 2016 and now for the 2019 Federal Election. “It has been an absolute honour and privilege to be selected to run for The Nationals and to represent the people of our wonderful part of Australia,” Dr Gillespie said. “Since I was first elected in 2013, The Nationals have played an important role in the Federal Coalition Government. near completion further north, planning is now underway on the various interchanges and flyovers that still need to be built throughout our region,” Dr Gillespie said. “The Nationals investment in the North Coast Jobs and Investment Package is creating over 200 new jobs and locked in the future operations of a number of our manufacturers and businesses in our electorate.” “Over 20 new bridges are being built across our local road network thanks to the Bridges Renewal program and more than 25 local road

black spots have been eliminated and made safer as a result of The Nationals record investment in the road black spot program. Dr Gillespie said local councils were also benefitting from record investment in both Federal Financial Assistance Grants and Roads to Recovery funding. “These two funding streams are very important to our local councils and I’m keen to see them expanded in some way in the future to provide a further boost to the regional councils that have much larger local road networks than our city cousins,” Dr Gillespie said. Dr Gillespie said that over the past five years, he has enjoyed helping many people who have come to him for assistance. “There are many people who have contacted me with various issues and ideas and I have enjoyed playing a role in representing them and trying to help resolve their issues. “In addition to the wonderful support I have received from our community, I’d like to thank my wife Charlotte and my family for their love and support in helping me dedicate the time and effort to doing this important job.”

MakerSpace can be a key to the future MOVING towards the end of the year means that after recovering from Schoolies Week, lots of young people are keen to find new jobs. We have a rich range of offerings in our MakerSpace program at No. 4 Albert Circuit, focusing on building and construction, forklift preparation and other hands-on skills. There are also exciting creative opportunities in the textiles and design field, for those keen on making fashion items and working in the general design industry. This program is a Pathway to Certificate III in Visual Arts which can lead to lots of choices, including mixed media and screen printing creations. The Jumpstart program in hospitality can help build skills for work in cafes, hotels and restaurants, while also helping young people develop their workplace skills in language, literacy and numeracy relevant for any job. Come and see what’s on offer at the college itself (at 77 Hastings River Drive), plus you can visit the MakerSpace to see the great spaces for anyone to create their own hands-on project. We’re keen to encourage a Deadly Treadlies bicycle recycling venture to operate from No. 4 Albert circuit, and you may have the passion to be part of helping young people learn how to maintain and build bikes from spare parts. That can lead on to work in small motor maintenance and other skills relevant to outdoor jobs in gardening, landscaping and horticulture. It’s all there for the asking. Whatever your passion, come in and find out more or contact the college 0265837288. You can call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, and also check out our full programs at www.portace.com.au

Local sport in funding victory LOCAL Sports Win Big With Funding: A $3.192 million NSW Government grant has been awarded to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council which will see Stuart Park transformed into a modern sports facility. The NSW Government Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund grant will pay to upgrade Stuart Park which accommodates 15 local sporting and user groups. This significant upgrade to the sports field will convert the site into a regionally significant venue that will be able to host state and national events. Upgrades include a premier field, new LED lighting, drainage improvements, multipurpose outdoor courts, spectator seating and shelter and formalised precinct parking. Improved infrastructure will enable local junior talent to stay local when progressing through sporting pathways. We all know how popular and healthy sport is so this is a huge win for local competitors of all ages and all levels of ability. Port MacquarieHastings Council is contributing $800,000 which will see a capital improvement of almost $4 million for the Stuart Park sports precinct. Preparing For The First NSW Women’s Week: Local government and not-for-profit community organisations are being encouraged to apply for a share of $100,000 to hold events in the week of 2019 International Women’s Day to

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

THE decision by Prime Minister Scott Morrison to accelerate tax cuts for small businesses is good news for the Port Macquarie economy. Some tax relief for this sector has already been implemented by the Coalition this financial year and is providing more money to be ploughed back into businesses, which is leading to increased employment, and is helping improve wages. The Prime Minister’s new plan is to bring forward further reductions in corporate tax for such businesses, originally planned for the middle of the next decade, so that they reach a 25% rate – down from 30% - by 2020-21, or five years early. This is an important policy move. The businesses involved have turnover of up to $50 million, employ thousands on the Mid North Coast, seven million across the country, and until the first round of cuts this year they were paying some of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. Mr Morrison’s ability to provide this benefit in a fiscally responsible way is because of the ALP’s refusal to back a reduction in the corporate tax rate to 25% for all businesses – big as well as small. This has freed up billions of dollars.

Jeans and denim are well-worn IT is unusual that one material found its way into two countries and was called two different names. Yet, that’s what happened with jeans and denim. In the 1850s a Bavarian migrant called Levi Strauss arrived in the Californian goldfields with a ready market for stout trousers, called jeans, or Levi. The word jean was originally a type of heavy, cotton fabric, an indication that the fabric was originally manufactured in Genoa. The word was already used in England to describe hardwearing trousers made from this type of cloth. Strauss later replaced this type of material with another type of material which he called denim and which he dyed blue. By this time the place of manufacture was serge de nimes. The name came to be called serge denim. Over time the trousers came to be called denim and Strauss’s trousers came to be called jeans. Jean fustian appears in texts from the 16th century.

Medieval Latin fusteaneum is a cotton or cotton or linen fabric and gene is the modern spelling of Genoa, where it was made and shipped abroad. The shortened form eventually made it into jean, rather than the city in which it was made. Jeans were worn for more than 500 years. They came in different names, such as ieene, ieane, ieine and jean. The form jeanes was used until it formed jean. In 1567 a church ordered jene fustian. Jeana were invented by Jacob W. Davis in partnership with Levi Strauss & Co. in 1871 and patented by Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss on May 20, 1873. Research on the trade of jean fabric shows that it emerged in the cities of Genoa, Italy, and

Nîmes, France. In Nîmes, weavers tried to reproduce jean fabric but instead developed a similar twill fabric that became known as denim, from de Nîmes, meaning “from Nîmes”. By the 17th century, jean was a crucial textile for working-class people in Northern Italy. This is seen in a series of genre paintings from around the 17th century attributed to an artist now nicknamed The Master of the Blue Jeans. The ten paintings depict impoverished scenes with lower-class figures wearing a fabric that looks like denim. The fabric would have been Genoese jean, which was cheaper. Dungaree was mentioned for the first time in the 17th century, when it was referred to as cheap, coarse thick cotton cloth, often coloured blue but sometimes white, worn by impoverished people in what was then a region of Bombay, India, a dockside village called Dongri. During the 1960s the wearing of jeans became more acceptable, and by the 1970s it had become general fashion for casual wear. lauriebarber,com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

property markets of smaller cities and regional areas and dismissed any talk of a bubble. Among topics Mr McGrath has discussed in the past have been: Taking the lead - the relationship between strong leadership and peak performance; the Internet and Technology - the Hottest Sales Tools this Century; Making the Transition from Good to Great; Creating a Personal Blueprint for Success and Focus on Teamwork and Team-building. Tickets for the lunch on Tuesday, October 30, are $77 for members and $88 non-members and include a drink on arrival and a two-course lunch.

PRESCHOOLS can now apply for a share of a $10 million investment to improve the learning environment of their service, the Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey has announced. The boost of funding is the second instalment of the NSW Government’s Quality Learning Environments program, which was introduced earlier this year to enhance the physical environment of community preschools. Mrs Pavey said the Quality Learning Environments program has already seen strong take-up. “In this new round, grants of up to $15,000 can be used for specialised educational programs and practices like music lessons, dance classes, or physical play activities along with physical enhancements,” Mrs Pavey said. Minister for Early Childhood Education, Sarah Mitchell MLC, said the NSW Government listened to feedback from the sector and broadened the scope of the program.

The magic is returning PHIL Jamieson from Grinspoon is bringing back the magic. Four years ago Phil raised money for a friend injured in a motorcycle accident through a music festival called ‘Magic Castle’. Music lovers from all over enjoyed the festival so much that it’s coming back again this December in Port Macquarie and this time it’s raising money for local organisation Headspace. “The last one was so great and the festival completely sold out,” said Lisa Willows, RAWR Music PR. “It was such a success and we had so much great feedback from people who said they really enjoyed it.” The last event raised $7723.45 for Phil’s good friend Lucas “Fruge” Farrugia from Port Macquarie who sustained serious head injuries in an accident on the Oxley Highway. This year Phil felt strongly about raising money for youth in the community. “I’ve been involved with Headspace since 2013 and I figured it would be a nice way to finish off the year by giving something back to something that gives so much to our local community,” Phil said. “It is going to be a ripper night.” Headspace is an important part of the community, offering young people, aged 1225, access to mental health support, health

advice and general information. The team at headspace include psychologists, social workers, youth workers and a GP. “This organisation plays a major role in the community,” said Lisa. “This year we are hoping to sell 300 tickets again and raise over $5,000 for Headspace Port Macquarie. “Luke felt that raising money for Headspace was important and so we have organised a really great line up with some really talented performers, including some local talent.” The line-up includes Mini Skirt, from Byron Bay, who will be delivering timeless straight up punk rock, Grace Turner from Newcastle who is renowned for her emotionally-driven indiefolk songs, Royal Chant from Port Macquarie including Mark Spence on guitar, Adam Murray on bass, and Wade Mobbs on drums. Also playing are the Genes Brothers, a rock duo from the Mid North Coast, Vena Klymo, a 21-year-old folk singer from the East Coast, and of course Phil Jamieson. Magic Castle will kick off on Thursday December 13 from 7pm at The Basement at Port Panthers, Port Macquarie. Tickets are $33.70 and can be purchased from https://tickets.oztix.com.au This is an 18-plus event. Pictured: Grinspoon’s Phil Jameson is bringing Magic Castle back to Port

Water Week

THE Port MacquarieHastings region has received some much needed rain over the last week, which is perfect timing to celebrate National Water Week, this week, October 21 - 27. This year’s National Water Week theme is ‘Water for me, Water for all’, and aims to highlight the importance of clean water in every aspect of our lives, and encourages us to all think about how we use water on a day-today basis. National Water Week is a timely reminder for us all to review our water saving habits, and protect and conserve our precious water resources. Council Director Jeffery Sharp said that water conservation is the responsibility of our whole community. “Our region’s water storage is in a really strong position, with our dam levels currently hovering around 92%,” said Mr Sharp.

AS many as 90 women in the Mid North Coast Local Health District have breast cancer but don’t know it because they haven’t had a mammogram in the past two years. The data, released by the Cancer Institute NSW during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also shows 13,571 women aged 50 to 74 in the Mid North Coast are either overdue for a mammogram or have never had one. Director of BreastScreen North Coast Jane Walsh said she hopes the data will encourage all women aged 50 to 74 to have a potentially life-saving mammogram and make simple lifestyle changes to reduce their breast cancer risk. “Encouragingly, overall screening numbers across the state are on the rise, which shows our lifesaving message is getting across,” Ms Walsh said. “However, each year 950 women in NSW die from breast cancer and our data shows more than 13,000 women locally are not attending their recommended two-yearly mammograms. “Women tend to have a perception breast cancer is common, but don’t think it will happen to them. That’s why it can be easy to forget to schedule a mammogram or not make it a priority. “Mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer before it can be seen or felt, which allows for less invasive treatment and better recovery. They’re also free of charge,” Ms Walsh said. Ways to reduce your breast cancer risk: • Maintain a healthy weight.

• Exercise regularly. • Reduce alcohol intake. • Quit smoking. Since July 1, 2015, the Cancer Institute NSW has invested more than $4 million on public awareness and education campaigns for breast cancer screening, and awarded more than $2.5 million to local community, health and primary care organisations to promote breast cancer screening. In 2018-19, more than $4.7 million is being invested towards the North Coast BreastScreen Screening and Assessment Service, which covers the area from Port Macquarie to the Queensland border. Breast screening participation rates are driven by many factors, including population growth and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, which have lower rates of screening than the general population. The Cancer Institute NSW targets these communities through various partnerships, services and funding, including $700,000 since 2016 to improve breast screening participation among CALD women. In addition to 46 BreastScreen sites, BreastScreen NSW has 16 mobile vans that provide services to about 180 locations across NSW, specifically in rural and remote areas. To book a mammogram with BreastScreen NSW, please phone 13 20 50. You can search for your nearest BreastScreen NSW service by visiting breastscreen.nsw.gov.au

LOCAL sports groups in the Camden Haven, Lake Cathie and Port Macquarie are the big winners with almost $600,000 in State Government funding to improve sporting infrastructure. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams made the announcement this week in front some very happy soccer players at the Vince Inmon Sporting Complex at Laurieton. “Extensive lighting and infrastructure upgrades including improvements to existing changes room facilities will be carried out at the Camden Haven sporting complex at a cost of $240,000. “At Lake Cathie $206,750 has been awarded to undertake substantial playing surface improvements to all three fields within

the complex as well as installing an automatic irrigation system. “LED lighting to 300 lux will be increased at Oxley Oval in Port Macquarie with $152,854 funding provided to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. This will allow for an increase in night games and practice for a number of sports,” Mrs Williams said. “These projects will result in huge benefits to the local sporting communities at each location. “The funding has been provided through round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the roll out of the second round projects takes Stronger Country

Dressed by Vinnies THE St Vincent de Paul Society is delighted to announce the launch of the first national Dressed By Vinnies Day, this Friday (October 26). The national event encourages all Australians who love a fashionable bargain to visit their local Vinnies Shop, find something they love, wear it on the day and share a photo on social media by using the hashtag #DressedbyVinnies. The theme for Dressed By Vinnies Day 2018 is ‘Wear it and share it!’. Long-time Vinnies supporter and ambassador, Joe Hildebrand will be getting involved on the day: “My mother basically raised me in an op shop, which is where I got my impeccable fashion sense and became the style icon people know and love today.” Joe added: “There is absolutely no better way to make great quality clothing affordable to people, raise vital funding for people in need and reduce the massive amount of clothing that is wasted every year. It is win, win, win and the best part is you can look good while doing it.” Jacqui Dropulic, Retail Development Manager for Vinnies NSW, explains: “Being Dressed By Vinnies is easy, as thousands of people already know. This year we are encouraging our loyal customers, and people who may never have shopped at their local Vinnies, to uncover a fantastic fashion item – a dress, a shirt, shoes, or even a whole outfit – and show everyone what they found via social media. “When customers shop at Vinnies, they are also helping us provide assistance to 1.8 million men, women and children experiencing disadvantage.”

Funding boost for local sport groups

CLASSIFICATION:

Communities funding to $300 million. “I congratulate Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and look forward to the local sporting facility improvements that will make the region an even more attractive place to work and raise a family,” Mr Barilaro said. “The $300 million Stronger Country Communities Fund is part of the NSW Government’s $1.6 billion Regional Growth Fund that is employing local tradies, putting local suppliers to work and providing the right environment to operate regional businesses,” he said. Port Macquarie City Men

PLEASE note that as of Monday Oct 22 the greens will be going out for their annual refurbishment (starting with green 2). This means there will be limited rink space for the next few months. During this period we will be playing mainly 2 bowl triples. The NSW Fire & Rescue successfully completed their state titles at Port City last week – even though the weather was a bit “iffy”. We look forward to seeing them again next year. Results and photos are on our web page. We recently held a bowls for bales day for our farmers and the final tally was that $7800 was raised on the day. ON Saturday afternoon we had the remaining semi-final of the Mixed Pairs Championship with Ken Ansley and Ann Steel up against Doris McKinnon and Steve Latham. A good crowd of spectators was treated to a great contest with the score tied at 5 all after seven ends, 6 all after nine ends, 8 all after twelve ends and 13 all after nineteen ends. Doris and Steve took a one-shot lead into the last end however Ken and Ann scored 2 shots on the final end to take the

match. Ken and Ann will meet Sue Petterson and Peter Laurie in the final, possibly to be played on Saturday 3 November but keep an eye on the notice board for confirmation. Due to the wet weather, numbers for last week’s Wednesday afternoon club select triples were down and only winners received trophies. Best performed were the pairs combination of Peter McLeod and Ken Ansley with a margin of +9. Twilight bowls started last Wednesday evening and winners were Craig Shaw, Adrian Samuelsson and Sonny Hackney while the runners up were Ian Hackney, Ian Lavender and Marty Loane. Best performed winners of Friday’s nominated pairs were Bernie Haggarty and Ken Ansley with +17 while the runners up were Ray Houghton and Doug Donovan with +16. Sunday morning’s monthly jackpot triples was well supported probably due to the $1,200 jackpot up for grabs. Best performed winners were Jim Hopcroft, Graeme Copp and Peter Lihou with +13. Runners-up were Peter Ostler, Tim Renshall and Gordon Wagner with +11. With the greens running a little slow because of the wet weather during the week, margins were close and expectations were high that the jackpot would be won. However no team had the winning margin of ‘+4’ and the jackpot will increase to $1,400 when we next play on Sunday November 18. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also be accepted and Wednesday afternoon single entry club select triples also at 1pm. Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to register for both of these events. Kicking off at 1pm on Saturday afternoon 27 October we will be holding a back to the 80s open, nominated pairs gala of 2 games of 15 ends with old bowls clobber to be worn and players to use the old style wide drawing bowls. This event will be sponsored by Neil Hudson Electrical and Sav’s Stencil Print with the entry fee being that of the 80s at $5.50 per player, so find a partner, get your names down on the nomination sheet and have some fun. For those interested in our very popular Pig Day Fours on Saturday 17 November, get your entries in because the nomination sheet is filling up fast.
