Party starts Oct 28 Make sure you’re ready to celebrate

THE Mid North Coast is getting ready for the region’s biggest party in the past 200 years. Already there have been numerous events nailed in as the region prepares to celebrate our bicentenary from 2018-2021. However locals should put aside Sunday, October 28, as a special day to get the birthday celebrations started. That’s when the event ‘200 Together’ – an Exploration through Time, will take place in Port Macquarie. ‘200 Together’ will be an opportunity for people to learn about the history of the region through cultural activities, such as local music and food, Aboriginal cultural experiences, market stalls, heritage displays, historic walking tours and much more. The bicentenary marks a significant milestone and the 200 years since John Oxley and his team of 15 explorers traversed the mountains from the west, surveying this region for early European settlement. “People don’t know enough about our history,” said Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Communications Officer Andy Roberts. “And that’s a part of the challenge with the bicentenary; to help people understand our history, heritage, where we have come from, and the journey we have taken over the last 200 years to get to where

At the launch of ‘200 Together’ are, from left, Cr Peter Alley, Cr Geoff Hawkins, Mayor Peta Pinson, Chris Denny, Glenn Dick, Janette Hyde, Cr Rob Turner and Geoff Gillespie we are. “It is also about acknowledging the Birpai people who are the traditional custodians of the land and have been for thousands of years.” There will be many events from 2018 – 2021, bringing the community together to commemorate the region’s history.

“The challenge is to educate the community about what our history is, and that’s pretty exciting with what’s going to take place over the next few years,” explains Mr Roberts. “The schools are a good place to start, getting kids involved. There’s lots happening and we are

Macleay’s blooming display By SUE PATERICK

Shirley Mayhew loves flowers and spending time in her beautiful garden, just one of seven on display in next month’s Garden Rambles in the Macleay on Saturday October 13 and Sunday October 14

I couldn’t live without a garden and “grass to walk on. I find gardening very absorbing because gardens are always a work in progress.

WANDERING through Shirley Mayhew’s scented Macleay Valley garden on a sunny Saturday morning was as relaxing as a meditation session. Birdsong filled the air and bees buzzed among a kaleidoscope of flowers that included roses, daisies, lavender, orchids, hibiscus and so many more gorgeous plants. The birds flit among the spreading branches of a 35-year-old Poinciana tree, a 25-year-old Golden Rain tree and a 50-year-old Sasanqua Camellia. Shirley’s garden is just one of the tranquil havens on display at Garden Rambles in the Macleay - A Gardener’s Paradise on Saturday, October 13, and Sunday, October 14. Seven unique and inspirational gardeners are opening their pride and joy to fellow gardening enthusiasts from 9am to 4pm each day. Kempsey Shire Council is a major sponsor of this event and all proceeds are going to local charities like the PCYC, FAWNA and the Kempsey District Hospital Auxiliary. “I’m looking forward to it,” Shirley said. Gardening has been a family passion for generations with both sets of her grandparents and her mum being avid gardeners. In fact, one of Shirley’s grandfathers was a market gardener who grew vegetables. When she was a teenager he gave her a Yates Garden Guide, a book that helped germinate the seed of a gardener. “My grandfather more or less instructed me,” Shirley said. She lives in her grandfather’s house surrounded by the things he built and blooming flowers taken from cuttings of plants that once belonged to an aunt. Gardening has not only kept Shirley active and looking young, it has also kept the roots of her family alive and in some cases still growing. Back in those early days Shirley grew a lot of veggies thanks to her grandfather and because everyone had a veggie garden then. Shirley still loves growing veggies but these days she prefers a raised garden bed. Given the diversity of flowering plants in her garden it is obvious flowers are her greatest love. They grow up walls and over archways, erupt from a myriad of pots, dangle from tree branches and fill Shirley’s garden with colour. “I couldn’t live without a garden and grass to walk on,” she said. “I find gardening very absorbing because gardens are always a work in progress.” For Shirley gardening makes her forget about anxiety and worries and seeing something flowering in her garden every day brings her pleasure. Pansies are her favourite flower because

they have happy faces and she likes her roses to be scented. Despite her green thumbs, Shirley admits to having trouble getting her gardenia to flower. “I’ll keep trying,” she said, with a smile. Shirley has lived in the Macleay Valley for 72 years and moved here when she was nine years old. She just loves the place. “It has a caring community, friendly people and is a very beautiful valley,” she said. To share her love of gardening Shirley joined the Kempsey Macleay Valley U3A garden group - the U3A Macleay Social Gardeners - when it started three years ago. “Gardening is very rewarding and it keeps me

fit and healthy,” she said. “How else could I keep playing tennis and table tennis and doing yoga?” Her advice to budding gardeners is not to be afraid to plant something and if doesn’t grow well then move it somewhere else. “Keep persevering,” Shirley said. Entry to Garden Rambles in the Macleay is $5 per garden or $25 to visit all seven. Apart from having the chance to explore seven wonderful Gardens of Eden, you’ll find plants stalls, a sausage sizzle, morning and afternoon teas and great raffle prizes. Start this magical blooming tour in Garden One’s grand formal gardens with river views at 14 Lord Street in Kempsey.

Grab a sausage sandwich at Garden Two’s sub-tropical Balinese-inspired acreage at 72 Griffins Lane in West Kempsey. Nourish yourself with morning or afternoon tea and buy a few plants at Garden Three’s large mature garden of water features, old farm implements, bromeliads and tropical plants at 2 Hillview Drive at Yarravel. Enjoy exploring Garden Four’s wellestablished, colourful and scented garden of flowering plants at 17 Macquarie Street in South Kempsey. Buy a few plants and have some morning or afternoon tea in Garden Five’s secluded cottage garden surrounded by native forest at 418 Pipers Creek Road in Dondingalong. The raffle prizes will be on display in the large, eclectic garden of native and exotic trees and shrubs of Garden Six at 33 Mollies Way in Dondingalong. Garden Seven’s immaculate gardens with large beds, screen plantings, naturalistic aviaries at 38 Mollies Way in Dondingalong ends this year’s Garden Rambles in the Macleay. LETTER WEEK OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

An unbelievable experience

IN April 2018 I had a 6.8 kw solar system installed at our house in King Creek (near Wauchope). This necessitated a change to our meter to handle the feedback etc. The new meters are “Smart “ in that they can be read from a remote location, saving the supplier the cost of a manual read, and they can also break the usage into time periods, ie. off peak , peak and shoulder. When the supplier’s contractor showed up to change over, he said he couldn’t do the job because the backing board was asbestos, as are all boards prior to the mid 80s. He said he was only allowed to drill six holes and the conversion required more than that. I was required to have the asbestos removed. I challenged this with Origin energy but they confirmed I had to have the change. My initial quote was ‘about $2000’. I subsequently had the job done for $700 by another young electrician, including some upgraded parts and reinstalling the old meters. Origin emphasised the solar system was not to be turned on until the new meter was installed. Finally in late August 2018 another contractor arrived to swap the meters. He noticed the new work and when I told him the circumstance he laughed and said he had swapped hundreds of meters without changing the asbestos board. He had never heard of a direction to replace the board. (Unbelievable No 1) It goes downhill from there.

I then received a letter from Origin energy confirming the new meter was operational and the tariffs had been adjusted as follows. 1. Peak period 39.138 cents per kWh - an increase of 37.5%; 2. Shoulder 36.652 cents per kWh - an increase of 28.7%; 3. Off peak 21.34 cents per kWh - a decrease of 25%. I questioned Origin about these massive increases and they blamed the time period capacity of the new meter and would not accept there was major price increases. The lady I was talking to also said that I was now using solar so the effect on me would be minimal. When I suggested I was therefore being penalised for using solar she hastily transferred me to a senior officer. He went through the same argument about the meter, and after a long consultation with another staff member offered the following solution. Contact Essential Energy and have the smart meter replaced with the old meter and then apply to have the old tariffs reinstated. He was vague as to what affect this would have on my solar generation as when the old meter was fitted I was not allowed to have the solar turned on. I declined this offer. The Catholic Church runs the Catholic Schools, most of the other Independent schools to benefit from the extra funds are run by other church organisations (e.g. Anglican, Uniting, Seventh Day Adventists etc.,) that collectively pay no taxes because of their church/not for profit status…And now our PM has handed them a reward! Wow! Remember this is extra funding – I’d like to know; was it solicited by the private schools or was it just a thank-you gift for some other dealings we haven’t heard about yet? Whatever the case I don’t believe it is warranted. There are plenty of other things we need to spend money on before the highly inflated private schooling institution. We are already over populated with egoists and elitists – we don’t need to fund more coming up the ranks. Thanks, but no thanks. Ultimately though, I think the ones who will suffer the most are those who attend public schools, that extra funding will have been dragged from somewhere. It’s clear that our government has an elitist attitude when they’re obviously not prepared to back their own education system. Oh no. Rather than spend the money in the public system and bring our public schools up to speed, the government have decided on our behalf - we’ll just funnel it in to the church schools – surely the coffers must be getting low, they’ve had to fork out all that money for the redress scheme! It truly is un-bloody-believable!

Thumbs Down TO whoever is responsible for the curb and gutter on the corner of Fernhill Road at the childcare centre. They didn’t leave an outlet for the water to get away, this causes a dam of mud when it rains. Someone who is responsible should rectify this for mothers with strollers and other pedestrians.

WHILE we were all distracted and debating about Harper Nielsen being too outspoken and intelligent for her age, our newest Prime Minister, Scott Morrison was busy working on a plan. God love him, (I can’t) he found a way to reward the bad behaviour in our churches and announced that “the federal government will provide an extra A$4.6 billion over the next ten years for Catholic and Independent schools exclusively”. I don’t know if you get where I’m coming from but, I find it highly inappropriate for our government to be granting funding, from taxpayers’ money, (to the tune of $4.6 billion), to an institution that is currently being investigated globally for paedophilia within the ranks. No matter which way I look at it – I cannot fathom why anyone would think this is a great idea. Don’t get me wrong, each to their own. I believe there is a place for church-run organisations and schools however, I don’t believe they are above the law or paying taxes. Unfortunately, because of their own abhorrently bad behaviour and living outside/above the law, Australian churches, the Catholic Church especially, are being pounded due to the Royal Commission and national redress scheme for victims of abuse in religious institutions. Rightfully so – personally, I think they’ve got off lightly by signing up to the redress scheme - $150,000 compensation and some counselling to each victim, for being abused as a child is an insult! Here’s the thing. You can correct me if I’m wrong – these churches, which are under investigation, are also running the same schools that we’ve just given $4.6 billion extra funding to?

Book charts beach history Author lets locals tell stories of an interesting past

“ A love of

history has always been present in my life, along with a habit of forever asking the simplest of questions: Why?

A LOCAL author is unfolding the history of Lighthouse Beach and Tacking Point. Thomas G. Freeman, a Port Macquarie local, is launching his first community-history book ‘Tacking Point and Lighthouse Beach 1770-1990’ in October. “I think the focus in Port Macquarie tends to be on the colonial history and the History Society does a really good job there, but there is a bit of a gap here where a lot of people are dying and history isn’t being recorded,” said Mr Freeman. “I wanted to find these interesting stories here, particularly with Lighthouse Beach and Tacking Point.” ‘Tacking Point and Lighthouse Beach 17701990’ takes the reader on a journey through the rich history of Tacking Point and Lighthouse Beach; sixty pages of stories, illustrations, paintings, and photographs. “A lot of the families in Port have been here for a long time, but a lot of people like myself moved here as kids or some people have moved here as adults, so that local knowledge can’t just be assumed, for us, because we don’t have any exposure to it,” explains Mr Freeman. “It’s just a starting point and I’m hoping people can email me and write to me and be like ‘you forgot this and that’.” Mr Freeman says he hasn’t always been a fan of the changes in his town. “For a short while I shared with friends the lone old-fibro house on Bourne Street,” Mr Freeman said. “To free it up for renovations we were moved out and it’s since joined the ranks of architect-inspired, modern-mcmansions. “The weathered exterior, creaky floor,

and leaky ceiling certainly were not worth saving. But, we lost a marker of the time when Lighthouse was a few beach shacks. I felt it important to capture local memories before they faded - of pristine rainforest, dairy farms, beach mining, motorcycle race meets, and a gigantic crocodile, to name just a few - to have a record of what life was like before the Lighthouse area became suburbia. “Early on they had high rises planned for Lighthouse Beach - it’s the only area in Port that has uninterrupted beach views. So they looked at Lighthouse and said let’s put in holiday towers,

and it didn’t end up happening. And now it’s like Newcastle where you’ve got these luxurious houses. “I think it’s a shame in town itself there’s not a lot of the colonial history remaining.” The publishing journey started two years ago when Mr Freeman started reading through old newspapers at his local library and began talking to locals about the area and their own personal stories. “I started in mid-2016 at the Port Macquarie Library,” Mr Freeman said. “On the computers they have nearly a century of Port News

Newspapers digitised so from there I had an outline, which I fleshed out with phone calls and visits to people who lived in the area over the decades. “When the time came to collect photos the Facebook group “You’re From Port Macquarie If…” was invaluable, and many friendly members were more than happy to share their collections. “A love of history has always been present in my life, along with a habit of forever asking the simplest of questions. ‘Why?’ A passion for surfing and a few energetic dogs meant early on I developed a connection with Lighthouse Beach. “I’m a relative outsider to Port Macquarie, having moved here as a child from Coffs Harbour. Our family didn’t have deep roots in the area so we weren’t privy to the same tales and stories told by families who have been here for generations. So, to sate my inquisitive mind I went looking, and I went chatting and this book is what eventuated. “I have to say a big thank you to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, who awarded this project a grant through the Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Association. It helped offset some of the costs associated with graphic design and printing.” Come down to the Tacking Point Surf Club on Friday, October 12, from 6pm for the official launch of ‘Tacking Point and Lighthouse Beach 1770-1990’. For more information, send Mr Freeman an email at Thomas.gregory.freeman@gmail.com Or search PortMacquarieHistory on Facebook (all one word).

Petition signed, sealed By SUE PATERICK DONDINGALONG (near Kempsey) resident Rick Furber and 318 other concerned people who signed his petition to tar Pipers Creek Road last year want a safe sealed road to minimise accidents and dust pollution. So he can’t understand why Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) is applying for another grant to tar Point Plomer Road, a road many people don’t want tarred, and not applying for a grant to tar Pipers Creek Road that everyone wants tarred. Pipers Creek Road is close to Kempsey, has 12 school bus movements a day, three state forests that are logged regularly, 13 auxiliary roads that feed into it, Rural Fire Service vehicles and four bamboo nurseries that use semi-trailers to deliver their plants. The local community out there have been trying for decades to get the road tarred. According to Council’s Director of Operations and Planning Robert Fish, several projects that required grant funding were prioritised in its 2017-2021 Delivery Program and one of those was to investigate funding options to seal Point Plomer Road. Tarring Maria River Road is also part of these plans. One of Council’s reasons for wanting Point Plomer Road tarred is the cost factor of maintenance grading four times a year, which is about $170,000. “If the road was tarred this money could be used elsewhere as the road would require less maintenance,” Mr Fish said. Mr Furber agrees but thinks this philosophy could also be applied to seek grant funding to tar Pipers Creek Road and other busy gravel roads west of the Pacific Highway. “If Pipers Creek Road was tarred then the money Council saved maintaining it as a gravel road could be spent on maintaining Point Plomer Road as a rustic gravel road,” he said. “We are all locals out here and we support businesses throughout the whole Macleay Valley on a daily basis not just when we come to visit for an annual holiday.” According to Mr Fish, the maintenance frequency required to keep Point Plomer Road in an acceptable condition was not financially viable and often not feasible given the short timeframe in which the road deteriorated. Mr Furber wanted to point out the same could be said for Pipers Creek Road and other busy gravel roads in the valley. Council also listed safety has another factor in its decision to seek funding to tar Point Plomer Road. “This road was given priority consideration for sealing as there have been several reportable car accidents on its gravel section in recent years.” Mr Fish said. Again Mr Furber wanted to stress that the same reasoning could be applied to Pipers Creek Road, which had been the scene of many accidents over the years due to its poor

The dust flies as residents become more angry over the condition of Pipers Creek Road near Kempsey condition and some of those were serious. The grant Council is applying for through the NSW Government’s Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund supports projects that have a positive environmental and tourism impact. “The work being done on the business case at present is seeking to quantify that potential tourism impact, factoring the broader benefit to businesses from increased visitation to Crescent Head beaches and accommodation if Point Plomer Rd was made safer and more accessible,” Mr Fish said. Mr Furber wonders why Council seems to value tourists more than locals, given there are only four business along the Point Plomer Road

and two of those definitely don’t want tar. He can name the same amount if not more businesses along Pipers Creek Road that employ people and want a tarred road. According to Mr Fish, there is an action within Council’s 2018-2019 Operating Plan to investigate and develop a strategy to seal unsealed roads, including consideration of future revision of the 10-Year Works Program and associated long-term financial plans. However, he said there were currently no works identified in forward plans to seal gravel roads, apart from Point Plomer and Maria River roads, unless significant grant funding could be obtained.

Men’s sheds celebrate their week

MEN’S Sheds are about a lot more than building and fixing things. This week is Men’s Shed Week and men are celebrating the benefits of these organisations around Australia. “There is a lot of mateship that goes with our Men’s Shed,” said John Hastings, General Manager and Publicity Officer of Kempsey Men’s Shed. “It’s about making new friends and teaching each other new skills. It’s like a club - it’s not a social club, but it is very social.” The Kempsey Men’s Shed keeps themselves busy with computer and technology lessons on Monday, ladies day on Tuesday, Men’s Shed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and on Friday’s the Men’s Shed members teach students some new skills. “On Mondays we have up to 18 people each week and we teach them how to use laptops and ipads and all the new things that come out,” explains Mr Hastings. “We really enjoy our Fridays too because we take the disabled children from Melville High School and we let them use our workshop and we teach them how to use the workshop. “Our Men’s Shed also welcomes ladies on a Tuesday where they can come in and they repair things and use the equipment. So we are pretty busy. We are community-based and binded.” The Kempsey Men’s Shed has been around for over 12 years and has recently moved to a new location. “We’ve been around for quite a while, and sometimes we even have overseas Men’s Sheds, like Ireland, that call us up for guidance,” Mr Hastings said. “We’ve just built a new shed out at the Kempsey Golf Club and it cost $150,000. We saved for that by doing monthly garage sales and doing jobs for people. We were lucky enough to be offered some land for lease by the Kempsey Golf Club.” Friendship, loyalty and camaraderie are highly valued in Men’s Sheds around the world, where men and women are offered a place to belong and contribute. “I’m 89 years of age and most of the men here are around 70,” said Mr Hastings. “At my age, it’s my life. My wife passed away many years ago so this is my life – the Men’s Shed. I enjoy every minute of it.” The Kempsey Men’s Shed had a good response to their Fund Raising Sale at the new Shed at the Kempsey Golf Club, so they have decided to open their doors every Saturday morning from 9am-1pm, for the month of October, to sell off a surplice of donated furniture. There are chairs, tables, desks, children’s desks with plastic chairs, cupboards and lots more, so come along and browse. For more information about Men’s Shed Week from September 23-30 visit mensshed.org

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson What a huge week it has been, with lots of exciting community initiatives moving forward. Our monthly Council meeting was last week, with a really jam-packed agenda, and whilst I won’t be able to cover everything that took place, I thought I’d give you a brief overview. Our region is known for its cultural vibrancy, and a new Cultural Plan is now in place that highlights Council’s commitment to ensuring arts, heritage and culture play a strong role in our future. A community plan for the Bonny Hills area has been endorsed, with a Community-Council action team that will drive the development of the plan to be established. The Bonny Hills Community Plan was a pilot project, and we’re now planning to develop 18 community plans over the next two

years, so keep an eye out for when we’ll be in your local area. A new Koala Recovery Strategy has been approved, which is extremely important in that it highlights numerous strategies to address the alarming decline in our local koala population. In this period of high growth and development we must look at protecting our national icon, and the strategy also looks at ways to address the primary causes of koala mortality, being car strikes and dog attacks. We have a great range of local markets across our region, and a draft policy on how we manage our markets is currently available for you to have your say. We’d love to hear from you, so please visit the Council website and let us know what you think. Potential development of Kangaroo Park on the North Shore is moving forward, and plans will now be developed so that in

pmhc.nsw.gov.au the future the park can be a meeting place for residents, and used for a variety of community gatherings and events. A review of our policies on smoke-free outdoor areas and the use of alcohol on public reserves and beaches is now available for you to view and make comment on. These policies are really important so that our outdoor spaces remain safe and available for all of us to enjoy. Wow... this is just an overview of some of the outcomes of last week’s meeting. If you’d like to find out more the minutes from all our meetings are available on the Council website, and of course you are always welcome to attend the meetings to see Council in action. Our next meeting will be at the School of Arts Hall in Laurieton on Wednesday 17 October, and I hope to see you there. Until next week, Peta

Plenty of interest in Nature network By SUE PATERICK THINK globally, act locally was a theme 50 volunteers from 20 conservation groups could join forces over at the inaugural Nature Networking Event at the Gladstone Hub on Saturday September 15. Three local businesses also attended: Sixty Degrees, Steam & Cedar and Whole and Happy. Macleay Living Sustainably (MLS) organised the event and said it was a huge success with 19 speakers representing hundreds of volunteers. Each speaker talked about their organisation’s work in nature conservation and Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell also gave an address and answered questions. MLS Spokesperson, Genevieve Furber, said the amazing amount of work that was being done to protect nature in the Macleay Valley blew them away. “We organised the event to bolster our connections, inspire, collaborate and be a stronger force for nature,” she said. “So it was uplifting to know there are so

Members of Macleay Living Sustainably Nona Harvey, Mandy Cooper, Nell MacDonald, Cherry Muddle, Genevieve Furber and Alison Lee with Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell at the inaugural Nature Networking Event recently many passionate people and visionaries in the region all giving their time to care for our local environment.” MLS was also delighted the Mayor attended the event and were invited to brief Council about their concerns at a forum later this year. “We hope our event is a catalyst for greater change in the Macleay Valley because our environment needs immediate and concerted action at every level,” Ms Furber said. The focus of Macleay Living Sustainably is to live more sustainably and protect the environment for generations to come.

“Climate change is happening now and the impacts are only going to get worse,” Ms Furber added. “So we need to act fast and that was the reason MLS decided to join the Stop Adani Alliance.” According to Ms Furber, MLS members feel that if the Adani coal mine is allowed to go ahead it will drain the nation’s underground water sources, destroy the Great Barrier Reef and supercharge climate change. “At a time when Australia is experiencing the worst drought in 100 years, the Australian

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.

Ready to work EXAM time is approaching, which means we’re heading towards the end-of-school year, when young people start thinking about skilling up for holiday work, or starting their first serious jobs. The college has a number of courses that will help like - bar skills, White Card, First Aid and other pre-employment pathway programs. Whether you’re looking for Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) or Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG), we offer these plus a number of pre-employment programs that can give you the skills to feel comfortable arriving in your first serious job outside school. Eligible students can access concession prices for many of our programs, especially those that support people who need some extra help. For example, our Forklift Licence Preparation course assists students to prepare for the theory test which is part of the licence requirement. So students attend this five-day program, students with good attendance and who complete their work will be sponsored to take their test – this sponsorship covers the cost of the Forklift Licence. Our MakerSpace programs at No. 4 Albert Circuit offers a wide range of first level skills activities, in building and construction, landscaping and horticulture. Having a great time will come a close second to preparing you for work in this great new program where bicycle recycling, which we call “Deadly Treadly’s”, will give you some beginning skills on the tools and prepare you for work, or maybe even a small business repurposing bikes? You can also access hospitality and retail skills, all of which help with early stage careers in growing industries, plus transportable holiday work skills. Whatever your preference, come in and find out more or contact the college 0265837288. You can call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, and also check out our full programs at www.portace.com.au

Airport upgrade a major benefit AN important infrastructure project for Port Macquarie is about to get underway with work starting very soon on the $10 million upgrade to the airport terminal. Demographer Bernard Salt identified good air services as a quality shared by all strong regional cities, and with the expansion we will truly join that club. We already enjoy a good flight schedule, but the 1994 vintage terminal is in need of the makeover. Existing floorspace will double, and that is going to make arrivals and departures so much easier. The works will be carried out in two phases to minimise disruption and late next year the new terminal will be complete. I was delighted to be able to secure a commitment at the 2016 election for the federal government to provide $1.25 million towards the upgrade. The state government is contributing $5 million and I congratulate Leslie Williams for her major role in achieving that funding. The council, led by Peta Pinson, is providing around $3.6 million, and the Mayor has been a driving force behind this project. It is another great example of what can be achieved when all three tiers of government work

closely together, and we do that on infrastructure just as often as we can to maximise benefits to the community. The new terminal is going to make a tremendous difference for residents, businesses, and especially for our very important tourism industry. Only construction, manufacturing, and health services now play a bigger role in our local economy with tourism revenue at almost $500 million a year and growing. Everything we can do to improve the travel experience augments the efforts our many tourism related businesses have made to make Port such an attractive destination. I look forward to taking part in a sod turning ceremony in a couple of weeks with my state and local government colleagues to celebrate another big plus for Port.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Federal Coalition Government has made the first payment of $1,144,385 to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council under the 2018-19 Federal Financial Assistance Grant Program. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will receive a total of $9,226,865 this financial year to support our local community. This grant can be used to help councils deliver infrastructure projects and fund health, recreation, environmental and employment projects. The program is a prime example of The Nationals’ ongoing commitment to support the efforts of local government to deliver the services and facilities their communities need. Under the program, The Nationals in government are delivering local councils with a total of $2.4 billion in untied grants in 2018-19. Council is free to spend this untied funding based on its own local priorities including the infrastructure and services their community need. I am looking forward to seeing our council target local priorities with this funding, along with millions of dollars in additional funding provided by the Federal Coalition Government.

Forget Tivoli, but never Bambi REMEMBER the Tivoli? Those of more senior years probably have fond memories of attending variety shows in that famous entertainment venue in Sydney. Others whose visits to Sydney were few and far between probably relate more to Sorlies. I have some distant recollections of a Tivoli show, but the Sorlies tent shows in country towns come vividly to mind, with the star of the show Bobby le Brun, always assisted by one or two attractive dancers. Bambi is the only name I can recall. Bambi would qualify to be a great grandmother these days. Bobby le Brun, sadly, has passed on to that great vaudeville show in the sky. I had a late night phone call a few weeks ago from one of those Tivoli-era entertainers, now living on the sixth floor of a Gold Coast apartment block. He is writing his life story, with which is entwined the story of 20th century Australian entertainment. He wanted to know how to spell a word that sounded like ‘shany’. “It describes the start of a vaudeville show where the dancers come out in a line and really put everybody in the mood to have a good time,” he said. I had never heard of ‘shany’, but after a few hours of searching we finally agreed around 11pm that the word he sought was chaine. A call to a local dance school the next day confirmed

my

LAURIE BARBER

our find. In the meantime, however, we shared a few thoughts about some of the great vaudeville shows that kept Australians entertained before the television era. The key word was variety. “Who can forget Buster Noble?” my friend said. “I remember Patsy Ann Noble better,” was the response. Then the names came thick and fast, but not having seen behind the scenes at such vaudeville shows I was soon left behind in the reminiscing stakes. Eventually, however, we had to touch on the meaning of the word vaudeville. After all, you can’t write a book about vaudeville without saying what it means. In Normandy, France, is a river called the Vire. That area was the home ground of a 15th century poet and songwriter called Olivier Basselin, who became famous for his topical and satirical works. His home was known as Vau de Vire, literally Valley of the Vire. His songs and

those of his friends became known as chansons or songs from the Vau de Vire. The word Merriam-Webster people say the English term vaudeville made its first appearance in Cotgrave’s Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues (1611). The British, however, resisted using the term for some time, favouring the word variety. Samuel Johnson in his 1755 dictionary described ‘vaudevil’ as ‘a song common among the vulgar and sung about the streets’. By the 19th century those songs represented by vaudeville had given way to any form of light entertainment. The Americans had little trouble taking to the word vaudeville to describe their light entertainment shows. By the time of the second world war, however, vaudeville shows were on their last legs, giving way to more modern forms of American-inspired entertainment. The Americans liberated the town of Vire in July, 1944. Vaudeville variety shows were strong on humorous counterpoints and double entendres. That was a hallmark of Bobby le Brun’s style of entertainment, along with many others of his ilk perhaps more famous in the annals of Australian entertainment. But I wonder whatever happened to Bambi? lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Hockey takes Lyn across the globe CRESCENT Head’s Lyn Dockrill is just back from Barcelona in Spain where she represented Australia in hockey at the Masters World Cup. The Australian team, the Wattles, came third in the round having to play a final against another Australian team to determine final world rankings. “It was a hard-fought game, which ended in a one-all draw,” said Lyn. “Unfortunately, we lost in a shoot-out 2 to1 but we certainly didn’t come away disgraced.” The competition ran for two weeks and men’s and women’s teams competed from across the world in over 35 age divisions. “It was a great tournament with some amazing hockey being played,” Lyn said. The hockey girls had to play in extreme heat conditions with some days hitting 42 degrees. So fitness played a vital part of Lyn’s preparation, not only for Spain but also for the forthcoming Australian titles in Western Australia. “Our coach prescribes very strict regimes, which we are

obliged to follow,” Lyn said. “We’re on our honour to actually fulfill the requirements but we realise just how necessary fitness and skills are for this level of competition.” Lyn plays hockey for Kempsey’s Nulla Allstars in the Port Macquarie/Hastings competition and is heading off shortly to represent NSW in the Masters National Hockey Championships in Perth. She will play in the NSW over-60s team, who were national title winners in 2017. In that tournament Lyn was named the top goal scorer. “It will be a tough challenge to retain the title,” she said. “But we have a great team and are looking forward to the challenge.” Pictured: Crescent Head’s Lyn Dockrill, who has been competing across Australia and the globe in hockey tournaments

Telegraph Point hits the jackpot! HUGE Funding Boost For Telegraph Point: Telegraph Point this year is set to receive at unprecedented $3.261 million in State Government funding. This is the highest amount of State Government infrastructure funding provided to the Telegraph Point community in living memory. Through the Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund, $698,000 will be spent to upgrade pedestrian safety with the construction of much needed footpaths in the village. A further $242,921 has been allocated to upgrade lighting and drainage at Charlie Watts Reserve which will be welcomed by the local sporting community. Both of these projects form part of the second round of projects which takes Stronger Country

Communities funding to $300 million across regional NSW. Earlier this year $2.32 million was announced as part of the NSW Government’s contribution towards the Telegraph Point Sewerage Scheme. These funding announcements will deliver

greatly needed infrastructure for a small village which deserves the same quality services as it’s neighbouring counterparts. The $300 million Stronger Country Communities Fund is part of the NSW Government’s $1.6 billion Regional Growth Fund that is employing local tradies, putting local suppliers to work and providing the right environment to operate regional businesses. Push To Extend Discounts For Seniors: Businesses providing essential services, products, and entertainment across the State are the target of a renewed push by the NSW Government to encourage more businesses to join the NSW Seniors Card program. The NSW Government’s concerted effort over recent years to grow the program has brought an

unprecedented amount of discounts for seniors and this renewed push will boost this work. At a time when the cost of living is rising and many of our ageing population is living on a fixed income, we need to find innovative ways to help seniors make every dollar count. Business owners are catching on and realising the benefits of offering a NSW Seniors Card discount are two-fold – acquiring new loyal customers and giving back to their communities. Businesses who sign up by November 9 will have the chance to win a $10,000 NSW Seniors Card advertising package. Seniors can also win a VISA Gift card for nominating new businesses. For more information or to nominate a business to sign up, visit www.seniorscard.nsw. gov.au

Students embrace our beaches ST COLUMBA Anglican School secondary students are saving our beaches. On Monday students from St Columba welcomed acclaimed ocean environmentalist Tim Silverwood to their school where he talked to the students about protecting our oceans. “Port Macquarie is famous for its amazing beaches and waterways and we need to teach our students to protect and preserve these fragile natural assets,” said St Columba Anglican School’s Chris Tejcek. Mr Silverwood, a keen surfer, is the awardwinning ocean advocate behind the ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ campaign. He also appeared on the popular ABC television series ‘War on Waste’. A keen surfer, Mr Silverwood became alarmed at the increasing risks plastic pollution posed to the oceans and wildlife. Then in 2011, he sailed 5000km across the North Pacific Ocean to study the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch. On Tuesday Mr Silverwood then joined 117 St Columba students on a beach walk clean-up which took place from Tacking Point Lighthouse to Town Beach. The rubbish collected was catalogued and recorded by the students and then added to the Tangaroa Blue International Marine Debris database. Mr Silverwood’s visit was arranged by Mr Tejcek as part of Marine Protection Week at St Columba. “The whole week is focused on the

preservation of the coastal and marine environment and the awareness of the environmental impacts that marine debris poses on marine fauna and ecology,” explains Mr Tejcek. “The visit is part of a week of activities in which SCAS students will work together to develop creative and practical solutions to

environmental problems in our oceans. “The first-hand experience always has a more lasting effect than simply reading content from the internet or a book. I believe that ultimate learning outcomes are achieved when students reinforce a strong theoretical grounding with an immersive first-hand experience.”

TWO drownings on NSW beaches in 48 hours has prompted lifesavers to issue a safety warning ahead of the new patrol season, which gets underway across the state this weekend. The warning follows the tragic death of a 37-year-old man who got into difficult while snorkelling at Racecourse Beach near Kioloa in southern NSW on Saturday. While in the early hours of Monday morning a man thought to be in his 70s couldn’t be revived after a boating accident near Kurnell. In addition to the coastal drownings, surf lifesaving assets were also tasked to attend a number of incidents on the weekend. These included responding to a stranded kayaker at Hyams Beach, a distressed kite surfer at Towradgi, and a number of medical episodes. Fortunately all of the other incidents had positive outcomes. Sadly there have been at least 5 coastal drowning deaths since July and with the hotter weather looming there is a concern among the lifesaving community that safety messages

still aren’t sinking in. “It has been a very challenging few days on the beach, and unfortunately these tragic incidents are a reminder of the power of the ocean,” said SLSNSW CEO Steven Pearce. “With the new patrol season almost upon us it’s an ideal time to reiterate some of the most important safety messages. “As surf lifesavers we want everyone to enjoy their time at the beach safely and it’s crucial that people make the effort to swim at a patrolled location and between those red and yellow flags,” said Mr Pearce. Other safety tips that are important include arming yourself with as much information as possible such as weather forecasts and tide changes, letting people know your plans, wearing the correct safety including a lifejacket if fishing, and knowing your limitations in strong swell conditions The NSW Surf Life Saving season will be officially launched with a ceremony at North Steyne Surf Club on Sydney’s Northern Beaches on Friday before the majority of volunteer patrols around the state commence

this weekend. Beach Safety Tips • Always swim between the red and yellow patrol flags, for your nearest patrolled beach check the BeachSafe app or website; • Read the safety signs for information about the beach and ask a lifesaver or lifeguard for safety information; • Always swim with someone else so you can look out for each other, and always supervise children around the water; • Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs; • If you need help in the water, stay calm and attract attention by raising one arm • In an emergency, dial Triple Zero Police; • Don’t forget to be sun safe by remembering to: Slip on some protective clothing, Slop on some sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Slide on a pair of sunglasses, Seek some shade and Sip on lots of water to stay hydrated; • For information about patrol times, weather, and beach locations visit the Beachsafe Website or Download the App.

Tony Kuhn on Stella who won the catamaran division

Back to the future for Port sailors THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club have decided to run the handicap start races as a separate series using the old manual handicapping method as the software generated handicaps don’t always seem to work out fair. The race started under sunny skies with a somewhat too light Southerly in the last of the run-out tide, but as the race progressed and the tide turned, the Southerly built up and weeded out a lot of the inexperienced and unfit sailors. After the software tweaks, the digital start and timer worked flawlessly. The catamaran division was led home by Tony Kuhn on Stella, closely followed by scratch boat, Frank O’Rourke on Dino. Grady McNee on Zax sailed well to be next despite being a bit out of practice, and finally Dave Winter on Spica. Jack Corthals on Harpic was going well but had to retire when he became unwell. In the monohull division, the scratch boat of Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in The lucky losers were George Barnes, Graham Platt and John Gillette. THIS week’s Wednesday afternoon club select triples only attracted a mere 18 players. Adolf mixed it up a bit this week by instead of selecting teams the skippers had a blind draw for leads and seconds. The winners on the day with +12 were Rex Shrubb, Dennis Simpson and Ted Scott while the runners up were Don Berry, Alan Edwards and Ron ‘Rabbitos’ Sharman with +8. This format was well received and we will do more throughout the year. Rex and Don appear in these articles with uncanny regularity. Friday’s nominated pairs once again saw 10 teams take to the greens. The winners with plus a lot and 2 laps in-front (they ran out of numbers on the score board) were Peter McLeod and Adolf Giacovani while the runners up with less than ½ a lot were Peter Jones and Gordon Wagner. This was 3 weeks in a row for Peter and Gordon. On Saturday arvo we had the second round in the Mixed Pairs Championship. The winners were Ken Ansley and Ann Steel, Ted Scott and Anette Jones, Adolf Giacovani and Judy Coombes, Peter Laurie and Sue Petterson, Paul Harrison and Heather Bartlett and Andy Beazley and Margaret Wallis. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also be accepted and Wednesday afternoon single entry club select triples also at 1pm. Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to register for both of these events. Keep an eye on the notice board for the scheduling of the next round of the Mixed Pairs Championships. The sheet is also out for our very popular fours Pig Day in November.

GF: Two big questions The fate of this “game weighs

heavily on the answers to those two questions

Roosters v Storm (Sunday, September 30, 7.20pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): And then there were two. The most evenly run NRL race in years has come down to the final big dance between Melbourne and the Roosters. Despite the closeness of the competition, this is the match-up that has been predicted since about midseason. They have been the bookies pick and the top choice of most street-corner experts. This week’s early market had the Storm at slight favourites - $1.85 – to the Roosters $2. Of course, as Your Local Independent was being wrapped up to go to print the biggest two questions surrounding the grand final were still to be answered: 1. Will Billy Slater be suspended? 2. Will Cooper Cronk be forced out with injury? The fate of this game weighs heavily on the answers to those two questions. The loss of either would be a massive blow to the team involved. Many would suggest that if Cronk is out than that would be a bigger blow. The former Melbourne general has been the difference at the tri-colours this season. His experience, and talent, has lifted this team to another level. One of his greatest attributes is as ‘the closer’. Not only is he able to put the final perfect touch on a play with a kick or a pass, he also knows how to close out a game when his team is in front. Slater obviously plays a different position and has a different skill set to Cronk. However his loss will be felt just as much by the defending

30th September 2018 Sunday 30th September, 7.20pm, ANZ Stadium Roosters vs Storm If Cooper Cronk plays, he still won’t be 100 per cent fit premiers. With the absence of Cronk at the Storm, no obvious standout replacement been found at No.7 in 2018. So what coach Craig Bellamy engineered was a game plan that evolved even more around Slater and his injection into the play. If Slater is sidelined that will mean a major reshuffle of the Storm playbook. The Roosters main strength this season has been their defence. They know they can rely on the person beside them when the pressure is on. As we all know, defence wins premierships. Of course the Storm also boast a strong defence and a renowned discipline. That also puts them in a very strong position to take the crown. Melbourne have also featured in the

past two NRL grand finals, which means that many of their players will be far from over-awed by the occasion and will know what is needed to win. The closeness of the comp is borne out in the fact that if the Storm do win they will be the first team to win backto-back titles in 25 years (the last was Brisbane in 1992-93). If both sides are at full strength, then Your Local Independent believes the Storm will edge the Roosters with their workrate and precision. A major factor will also be, if Slater plays he will be 100% fit. If Cronk plays, he won’t be. Your Local Independent tips: Storm
