A costly victory A PORT Macquarie business has been left counting the cost despite winning a lengthy court action against Port MacquarieHastings Council.

Craig Pinson, director of Diveva Pty Ltd, which trades as Mid Coast Road Services (MCRS), said the four-year battle for justice has been extremely difficult and ‘has come at great personal and financial cost, straining family relationships’ and called into question his professional reputation.

The dispute was centred over the termination of the local company’s contract, by council, after MCRS laid bitumen on a 600m stretch of road at Lake Cathie on Ocean Drive between Miala Street and Houston Mitchell Drive.

Council prepared the site and MCRS laid bitumen which later showed signs of failure.

The NSW Supreme Court initially found in favour of MCRS, however the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council appealed that decision.

Late last week the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court New South Wales, dismissed that appeal.

ELLE Debreceny and her family want to thank you for your support in her battle against Lyme Disease.

Unfortunately, many people like Elle who suffer from Lyme Disease, a bacterial infection, struggle with the high costs of treatment, partly because the condition is not recognised by most Australian medical authorities.

That was the nightmare that Elle and her family faced until the community came to their aid.

“Elle’s treatment costs have been adding up since January, 2013,” said Julie Debreceny, Elle’s mother.

“It took 12 months to get a diagnosis and a doctor who would support Elle throughout this horrible illness. The amount of medical costs that we incurred to get to this point was huge.

“Then in January, 2014 we had a diagnosis.

From there we travelled to Sydney, initially once a week for treatment expanding out to now once a month. The costs were approximately $4000 to $5000 a month for consultations, tests and medication.”

It was then that Elle and her family found hope in a special treatment only available in certain overseas countries.

“Elle and I travelled to Malaysia in February/ March for her first round of hyperthermia treatment and then a second hyperthermia treatment trip in March/April,” said Julie.

“For four flights, 30 days accommodation, meals for 30 days, medicines and two hyperthermia treatments the costs came in around $30,000.

“Elle’s eldest sister, Gina, paid for her own plane ticket and costs so she could assist Elle and I throughout Elle’s second treatment as it was such a stressful ordeal the first time.

Elle and I will forever be grateful for Gina’s support.”

Although Elle now had hope, it wasn’t an easy journey.

“Elle underwent a lot of medical preparation before we made the decision to follow through with the hyperthermia treatment in Malaysia,” explained Julie.

“The treatment is not to be taken lightly and with all medical procedures comes risk. Elle was under anesthetic throughout the whole process.

“Elle was basically zipped into a canvastype sleeping bag with her head out. Then she was sealed in a rectangular-type prism made of the same product.

“Elle’s core body temperature was then heated to 42.2 degrees. The aim is to hold this for a minimum of an hour. The whole process takes 10-12 hours - to heat the body up, hold it and then reduce the heat back to normal body temperature.

“The bacteria dies at 41.6 degrees, hence the aim to hold the body at 42 degrees for an hour.

Elle was able to hold 42.2 degrees for 40 minutes the first treatment and then 42.2 degrees for an hour and 10 minutes the second time. This was considered an excellent result.”

Julie knows the pain and heartache of watching her child go through such a tough ordeal, but she stayed right beside her throughout the whole journey.

“Watching Elle go through this was one of the most stressful things I have ever experienced,” Julie said. “I just held onto the thought that at the

end of this, Elle is going to have her life back.

“Thanks to all the generous people that donated and raised funds for Elle’s treatment, she is now on the road to recovery and loving life more than ever.

“We have received to date a total of $9825.55 in donations.

“We were overwhelmed with the support Elle received from her friends, family and people she has never met. Elle’s friends and siblings, kids that are on minimum wages were donating $100

cash to help Elle get to Malaysia. It brought tears to our eyes to think they were donating so much!

“Elle is now pain free. She has not had any symptoms at all since three days after her first treatment on February 27. No icepick headaches, no pain, no fatigue. Elle has just had her follow-up appointment today with her Sydney doctor and he has told us that she is now officially in remission.

“Elle has always wanted to be a chef. There wasn’t one cooking program she didn’t watch or cooking opportunity she didn’t take.

“There was not one thing that was going to change her career path until her treatment in Malaysia.”

Elle has now made a life-changing decision.

After everything she has been through, she wants to be a nurse and specialise in helping people who are experiencing the very same symptoms she has just fought her way through.

She wants to let people know that there is hope and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported Elle throughout her illness from the bottom of our hearts,” said Julie. “It has been a very long, tough road for all involved and we could not be more grateful for the love and support Elle has received.”

She was parked directly on the pedestrian footpath access across to the new Kmart Shopping Centre. On being told she was blocking pedestrian footpath, she replied that she knew! TO the drivers of cars who illegally park at the PMBH. Recently I saw five cars parked in disabled car spaces without permits, three in motor bike-only areas. There are a large number of cars parked illegally on the narrow roadway in the parking areas, so it’s very difficult to negotiate around them. This is an ongoing problem.

Thumbs Up TO the gentleman who came to help my husband pull out some large shrubs out the front of our property in Mayworth Ave. He was visiting his son in the street and saw my husband struggling with the pick and offered to drag them out with his ute. He wanted nothing in payment and just said helping each other is what we all should do. What a wonderful man and I wish there were more like him.

So after the car wash, he changed my tyre for me! To say I appreciated his kindness is a huge understatement and I thought, “Thank God for such wonderful people around us”. Who said chivalry was dead?

I don’t know about you, but I have a bit of a problem with this.

Firstly, I think it may have been appropriate to wait longer than 15 minutes into the press conference to make your intentions public.

I would exepct a Councillor of five years to have a certain level of familiarity with the Local Government Act and the obligations under said act. If I wasn’t familiar, I’d make damn sure I made myself familiar, quick smart, before making any public announcements. Why? The resignation of a member takes effect on receipt by the chief executive officer of the notice of resignation or on a later date, not more than 14 days in advance, specified in the notice of resignation (but once the notice is received by the chief executive officer the resignation cannot be withdrawn) - excerpt from the Local Government Act. Last I heard, confusion abounds. I’ve had plenty of calls and messages from punters wanting to know what next?

Honestly, I don’t know. I suspect that it will be referred to the GM, Craig Swift McNair, Richard Carroll at the Electoral Commission or the Office of Local Government to deal with the situation.

What intrigues me? I’m not sure how someone can ‘un-resign’ five days after publicly announcing said resignation in the media.

Like I said, the next few weeks are going to be entertaining if nothing else.

Council appeal dismissed The ‘win’, as “many people

have mentioned, has come at a significant impact to me both personally and my business

“

ON Friday May 12, 2017 the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court New South Wales handed down its judgement in the case of Port MacquarieHastings Council v Diveva Pty Ltd. Justices Payne, Beazley and Simpson unanimously dismissed the appeal by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and ordered them to pay the respondent’s costs.

The judgement is the final chapter of a fouryear battle that has played out firstly before a Supreme Court Judge and finally before three Supreme Court Appeal Judges.

Diveva Pty Ltd (which trades as Mid Coast Road Services) Director, Craig Pinson said: “It has been an extremely difficult four years and has come at great personal and financial cost, straining family relationships and calling into question his professional reputation.”

Your Local Independent invited Craig Pinson to share the story in his own words. This is what he had to say: “This all began due to council refusing to take responsibility for defective work they themselves had undertaken. Following the process outlined within the contract, our request for mediation was denied, adding to the reluctance to cooperate, it took 12 months in court trying to gain access to Ocean Drive for Testing.

“Despite our attempt to resolve the situation through the right channels they were not interested in knowing how they might have been wrong, instead I was intimidated and Council adopted an aggressive approach designed to keep me in line.

“The judge described Council’s approach as ‘bloody minded’ and found that the council officer, Gary Randall, had no real construction experience in order to make decisions.

“When I attempted to meet with the Mayor he was unresponsive. I also arranged to meet Councillor Lisa Intemann, who met with us at a private office in our home, and then requested

Mid Coast Road Services Director Craig Pinson that all the documentation and information be sent to her personal email address.

“Even with evidence and expert opinion before them, the Mayor and the chair of the roads portfolio, Cr Intemann, sided with Council staff and refused to acknowledge what was happening.

It was at this point I realised the only option available was to hold Council to account in court.

“The ‘win’ as many people have mentioned has come at a significant impact to me both personally and my business. I now feel in a position to focus on moving forward and rebuilding the name and reputation of the business within the local government.

“As a small business owner, we encourage staff development and leadership, part of our staff development growth is understanding accountability and responsibility in their roles within the organisation. These are key attributes that many business owners seek when building a strong and defining culture and work ethic, regardless of your industry.

“It is these ethics, values, behaviours and attitudes that should be held in high regard in any Local Government organisation, especially when being held accountable for the effective management of ratepayers funding. The expectation should be nothing less than good

governance, effective and efficient management of assets and funding. All businesses and organisations should expect transparency and equality with all interactions with the numerous departments in council.

“The decisions of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council staff and advisors comes at the expense of our ratepayers. Who will be held accountable? Who will take responsibility?

Have lessons been learned and will attitude and treatment of businesses change as a result?

“I am just relieved that the judges accepted our evidence and I have now been vindicated by the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. I plan on meeting with council’s General Manager to discuss the way forward from here.”

PMHC General Manager, Craig SwiftMcNair released a media statement on Friday May 12, regarding the decision around the MCRS Court Appeal stating: “Whilst disappointed we respect the process and the decision.”

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC HARRISON Craig already has a close affinity with Port Macquarie, and now he is coming back again for his new tour.

Harrison, winner of The Voice in 2013, is set to embark on an extensive national tour of Australia with his Kings Of Vegas show.

“I really enjoyed the town last time I was there,” said Harrison.

“It’s really beautiful and it’s not often that you feel very welcomed and homely in another town, which is really refreshing because you can do so much travelling and driving and flying, and it’s all go...go...go. I’m really looking forward to getting back to Port again.”

The inspiring story of Harrison Craig was aired across Australia in 2013. Since then he has been keeping busy perfecting his craft.

“The first thing that I came out with was my More Than A Dream record which was straight after the show,” said Harrison.

“Then I actually went around Australia for a 25-show tour which was fantastic. After that I came out with L.O.V.E, which was record number two and then I toured once more with that with John Foreman.

“This third record I actually took a lot of time to put together. I went to Vegas and stayed there and explored the town and went through Palm Springs and got to know a lot of where the Rat Pack congregated.

“I went through to the Frank Sinatra property and really got to explore what it was like to walk in the King’s steps.

“From when I was about five I used to hear around the house Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, The Rat Pack, so that inspired me to create this record.”

Touring can often be a strenuous and tiring experience for many performers, however, Harrison has loved the journey so far.

“Touring is so much fun,” he said. “You get

Harrison is not only a remarkable singer and performer; he is also a young man who has struggled with a stutter from a young age.

That’s why he created a book Harrison’s Song, for children facing struggles of their own and chasing their dreams.

“At the end of the day the only currency you have is your memories and your ideas,” Harrison said.

“For me it’s really about taking the hurdles that I’ve had in my life growing up, ranging from issues that are quite common today like divorce, my parents split up when I was very young, that’s’ just one small thing.

“The really big thing is that I grew up with

a stutter and it’s been a huge hurdle for me. I walked onto national TV in front of four worldclass coaches ready to be potentially told I wasn’t good enough because of my stutter.

“For me that was quite daunting, but I thought this is in the line of my own dreams, this is what I want to do so I have to be ready to commit and take it to wherever I need it to go.

“Kids need to know that no matter what their hurdles are and no matter what their challenges might be, that they can reach their dreams, there are no restrictions on that.

“They have to really want it and grasp it.

This is what the book is all about - the adversity in my life and applying it to their’s. It’s really important to me. I’ve got huge launches around Australia for the book, which is really great, so I get to chat to kids, meet the parents, and talk to them about whatever they want to talk about.

“It’s really exciting because I get to share my dream, and they will share their dreams with me.

It’s so important to me.”

WORKS to upgrade Town Green commenced on Monday (May 15) as part of major facelifts taking place in the Port Macquarie CBD, in accordance with the Town Centre Master Plan.

Town Green East will be a hive of activity as Stage 1 works get underway to renovate and transform this popular central green space. To allow for the implementation of the new design, existing trees will be removed and replaced with established trees, new turf and irrigations systems.

A new, wider five-metre concrete path along the foreshore will provide a more comfortable and accessible link between Lady Nelson Wharf and the breakwall, and new lighting and seating will create a more usable and relaxing space.

The sea wall will also be rejuvenated, with 2500 tonnes of new rock being brought in to protect the area. Stormwater upgrades will occur and the existing power and lighting will be replaced to make the area more appealing.

Pedestrian access between the Town Square and breakwall will be maintained, however the community is asked to exercise caution as the works take place. The upgrade to Town Green will ensure the space meets community needs now and into the future, resulting in a far superior, more vibrant and useable area for many community events, experiences and activities.

NATIONALS Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has welcomed the announcement

by Virgin Australia that its Port MacquarieBrisbane route will soon be served by jet aircraft under a new code-sharing arrangement.

Virgin Australia has advised the Australian Stock Exchange that the company has entered a code-sharing arrangement with Alliance Airlines to operate Fokker jet aircraft on a number of routes currently served by Virgin ATR turboprop aircraft.

The agreement will see existing frequency retained, with extra capacity available due to the larger size of the Alliance Airlines aircraft.

Mr Hartsuyker said he sees the addition of capacity on the Brisbane-Port Macquarie route as a positive step for the region.

“This availability of extra seats on the Brisbane-Port Macquarie route can only be a good thing. Port Macquarie is a desirable destination with significant potential for future growth,” he said.

“Recent tourism figures show that northern NSW is a preferred destination for local and international visitors. Increased flight capacity will only continue to improve the region’s reputation as a tourist drawcard.

“I congratulate Virgin Australia for this continued investment in Port Macquarie and the Mid North Coast region.”

The Million Paws Walk is a great day to give back to the animals who give so much.

All proceeds will help the RSPCA raise vital funds for animals in need and will assist with its animal shelters, support its Inspectorate - a squad of law enforcement officers dedicated to policing offences against animals - and provide community education on animal welfare issues.

The day not only raises money for our pets, it is also a fun-filled day out for the family.

The Kempsey event will be held this Sunday (May 21) at the Kempsey Showground main ring from 9am with the walk starting at 10am.

The day will include games, giveaways and special prizes for best-dressed dog and owner.

There will also be Council staff on hand to provide information on micro-chipping and responsible pet ownership.

The Port Macquarie walk, also on this Sunday, will be a scenic experience at Oxley Oval from 9.15am with the walk held at 10am.

There will be plenty of furry friends and their owners to enjoy games, stalls filled with dog coats and pet accessories, dog washing, prizes and the Port Macquarie Hastings Concert Band who will be adding some festival vibes to the day.

The event will also offer plenty of food and beverages, including a sausage sizzle, Peak Barista coffee, cakes and slices, as well as a homemade lemonade stand and a Tropical Snow Cone van.

Bare portrait showing THE Glasshouse Regional Gallery presents the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition Bare: Degrees Of Undress from Friday, May 19 to June 25.

Bare celebrates the candid, contrived, natural, sexy, ironic, beautiful and the fascinating in Australian portraiture that shows a bit of skin.

Including 59 portraits from the Gallery’s collection, Bare investigates elements of nakedness, with personalities including Dame Edna Everage, Germaine Greer, Megan Gale and Billy Slater.

Penelope Grist, the exhibition curator, was fascinated to discover that almost all the Gallery’s portrait sitters in varying degrees of undress are Australia’s foremost creative achievers or elite sportspeople - the majority being men with their shirts off!

“Bare will be fun, whilst also interrogating our instinctive reactions to bareness,” said Penelope.“Bareness is not as extreme as nakedness and not as refined as nudity. Bareness emphasises something about a subject’s identity as well as reflecting society. Visitors to Bare will see these portraits in a completely new way.”

Smaller ideas within budget are significant THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

LAST week’s federal budget included some significant nation-building investments, like the Melbourne-Brisbane Inland Rail, which will take trucks off the Pacific Highway and help our farmers get their products to market, and the new airport in Western Sydney.

But tucked away in the hundreds of pages of budget papers, reports, and statements were a range of smaller initiatives. They might not make the front pages, but sometimes it’s these small ideas that contribute the most to making our communities better places to live and work.

The budget includes an investment of $24 million for Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships. In simple terms, these scholarships will help students from regional Australia improve their skills and educational attainment in priority fields of study including science, mathematics, engineering, and health.

The government is also allocating $4.1 million to reduce the costs incurred by living organ donors. Giving a loved one a kidney or part of a liver is an extraordinary gift, which the government will recognise with support to cover out-of-pocket expenses related to the donation. Donors in regional Australia will benefit particularly, as they often face higher costs and requirements to travel for surgery and recovery.

Women’s sport and high-participation sports will also receive a boost, with funding to support the broadcast of sports that are underrepresented on television.

The recent success of the women’s AFL and Super Netball have highlighted community interest in high quality women’s sporting events and the importance of positive role models for young female athletes.

The budget also includes funding for a Broadband Performance Monitoring and Reporting Program.

At present, it’s almost impossible to determine if a broadband provider is telling the truth about the quality and reliability of their services. This program will break through the maze of claims to help consumers decide which broadband internet service is best for their needs.

New DV reforms focus on safety NEW Reforms Put Domestic Violence Offenders In The Centre Of The Frame: Greater consideration will be given to the safety of victims by the court in sentencing domestic violence offenders under the NSW Government’s justice reforms announced recently.

The NSW Government has also praised the introduction of a presumption that domestic violence offenders will receive prison time or a supervised sentence.

The new presumption to be applied by the courts will ensure offenders who currently receive unsupervised sentences will now be subject to stricter interventions from Community Corrections. This means significantly more offenders - who were previously without any kind of management in the community - will now be supervised.

Currently 75 per cent of domestic violence offenders are given a sentence that has no supervision attached and no condition to address their offending behaviour. We need victims of domestic and family violence to know that the system will help keep them safe.

These reforms will continue the NSW Government’s commitment to putting domestic violence perpetrators in the centre of the frame.

Courts will need to consider the safety of the victim before imposing any community-based order and the most serious domestic violence

offenders will still go to prison.

New reforms to encourage early guilty pleas will also see criminal cases resolved faster, allowing victims to get on with their lives and police to return to front line duty.

Nominations For Apprentice Scholarships Program Closing Soon: Apprentices who are facing financial hardship are being encouraged to apply for a Bert Evans Scholarship from the NSW Government before May 30.

Local employers and training providers are also being encouraged to nominate candidates for one of 50 scholarships offered each year by the NSW Government.

THE Federal Coalition Government has announced new funding for the community radio sector, supporting the vital role they play in enhancing the diversity of Australia’s media and broadcasting sector.

The Government will provide new funding of $6.1 million over two years to support the roll-out of digital radio services and one-off spectrum reorganisation costs for analogue radio services.

This investment is in addition to the $15 million per annum already provided through the Community Broadcasting Program.

The new funding will be focussed on the roll-out of digital radio into regional areas and will provide some additional investment to support infrastructure needs of community stations.

The government’s funding complements other funding available to the sector, and the many thousands of hours that volunteers across the country provide in support of their local stations.

We believe community radio is an important voice. There are 455 community radio stations transmitting to more than five million people each week. Dingbat has different meaning in US my

I HEARD a person describe another as a dingbat recently and my thoughts went back to my working days and to my days as a child.

Dingbats was such an entrenched word in the printing industry that I almost forgot that it had any other meaning.

In the printing industry it meant some type that was not the usual, I suppose you could call it a symbol. Think of when you want to use a pair of scissors, or an aeroplane or some symbol that could not readily be expressed in words.

Yes, they were popular in their day. Some books had thousands of symbols.

Those in the printing industry would refer to dingbats and know exactly what they meant by using the word.

But many years before I joined newspapers I heard the word used in an entirely different sense.

Dingbats referred to somebody who was – I have to be careful here – a sandwich short of a picnic or somebody who was still in the back paddock.

Surprisingly, many of the dictionaries I consulted did not include the word at all. It was almost obsolete.

Dingbats is one of those words that has many uses. In the United States, for instance, it meant

money or even a drink. Yet, surprisingly, my Webster dictionary did not include it. Neither did a couple of other American books in my possession.

But my big Oxford dictionary in volume four says dingbats, so far as the US is concerned, means money, thingummy and a tramp.

I like the word thingummy. It covers everything.The big dictionary goes on to mean a foolish or stupid person and a general term of disparagement, “chiefly US”.

Then Australia and New Zealand get a mention. The big dictionary says that in Australia and New Zealand dingbats means mad, stupid or eccentric. To give a person the dingbats is to give that person a feeling of nervous discomfort.

Under delirium tremens is the example “the dingbats, I believe, are really the snakes, weasels, etc, which the sufferer sees”.

Some people still see them after a big night out. The ding refers to a thing and bat refers to a strange connection, so I suppose there is a relationship there somewhere. The word does not seem to have a connection with anything. It just appeared.

Dingbats also referred to an army batman, such as in 1919 when WH Downing said in Digger Dialect there was a vast difference between a dingbat in the British army and one in the AIF. Philip Hale, of the Boston Journal, in attempting to define the word dingbats, came up with his definitions: “Balls of dung on buttocks of sheep or cattle; blow or slap on the buttocks; flying missile; squabble of words or pushing; money; various kinds of muffins or biscuits; affectionate embrace of mothers hugging and kissing their children; terms of admiration”. The biscuit was described as “about as digestible as a brickbat”.

But Hale missed the Australian definitions – a printer’s mark and a person who is eccentric. But then Mr Hale came from the USA. A person who is eccentric in Australia or New Zealand might be considered normal in the USA. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.

Firefighters’ Open Day

FIREFIGHTERS are encouraging people to visit their local fire station for the Fire And Rescue NSW (FRNSW) annual Open Day on Saturday (May 20).

Most fire stations across NSW will be open from 10.00am to 2.00pm and families are encouraged to come along and meet their local firefighters and learn more about fire prevention.

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said a range of free activities will be on offer, including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and fire safety presentations.

“Firefighters will also be able to provide advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms, and preparing a home fire escape plan,” he said.

“Children will be able to see the fire engines and firefighting equipment up close – always a highlight of this much-anticipated day.

“They will also be able to take home a “Brigade Kids” activity booklet, which teaches them vital fire safety lessons.”

Commissioner Baxter said FRNSW is this year focusing on fire prevention in the kitchen, urging people to “Keep Looking When Cooking”.

“Almost half of all house fires start in the kitchen, usually when people fail to keep an eye on the stovetop,” he said.

“Regrettably, hundreds of injuries occur every year from cooking-related fires, and people have lost their lives as a result.”

Museum events celebrate rich local history THE Port Macquarie Museum will hold two events during May to celebrate our rich local history and heritage.

To celebrate International Museum Day on Thursday (May 18), the museum will offer special gold coin entry for the day.

“The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the role of museums and that museums are important places of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding. We also think museums are fun and interesting places to visit”, says Debbie Sommers, Volunteer Curator.

“The special admission price for the day is intended to encourage those people who

haven’t yet visited our museum to come in for a look at our exhibits and perhaps discover something new.

“Most people are surprised about the size of the museum and the scope of our collections.”

The second event is a history talk titled ‘The Ruins – Remnants and Revelations’ to be held at the Port Macquarie Museum on Tuesday, May 23 at 10.00am to mark National Archaeology Week.

The Lake Innes House ruins have a special place in our history and are considered one of the most significant in regional NSW. The talk will reveal some of the Innes Ruins secrets and treasures and demonstrate that the Ruins are much more than a pile of old bricks.

Fashion event shows off new Curves “

There are no mirrors, no children - just a wonderful nurturing, caring environment for women of all ages

CURVES, the fitness and weight loss centre especiailly designed for women, is hosting a Fashion Parade on May 20 to celebrate its relocation to a new Port Macquarie premises.

Formerly in Hastings River Drive, Curves is moving to 2 Blackbutt Road as of Monday, May 29.

To mark the big move, the May 20 Fashion Parade will be held at the new premises with doors opening at 1.30pm. The Fashion Parade starts at 2pm, featuring clothes from Charlize Rose on Hay Street and Circle of Friends on Horton Street. The function also includes merchandising displays, a dance exhibition, lucky door prizes and a raffle. Free joining fees for Curves memberships are available on the day - a saving of $150. Entry to the Fashion Parade is $5 and includes afternoon tea. All ladies are welcome and can secure a seat by phoning 65838110.

Curves has always offered the best fitness and training environment for women of all ages in the Port Macquarie region.

Curves caters to members ranging in ages from 15 to 87 and is open six days a week 5.45am to 7pm Monday to Thursday, 5.45am to 6pm on Fridays and 8am to 11am on Saturdays.

There are showers and lockers for women who want to workout before going to work.

Owner Vanessa Kelliher said Curves offered a wonderful environment for women to workout and achieve their fitness goals.

Curves has qualified circuit trainers available at all times to maximise workouts. There are also special circuits every day to target specific areas of the body - legs, core and arms. Additional

circuits available are Dance and Tone, Box and Tone and Zumba.

Curves also coordinates with medical practitioners in the case of any members who are returning to exercise after ill health or surgery.

Members also have a Curves ‘smart tag’ that monitors individual workouts and identifies how many calories have been burnt, what muscle

groups have been worked and compares that information with your previous 10 workouts.

Vanessa said Curves also features a weightloss program.

Drug-free method to overcome pain

Backyard Landcare MAY Weed of the Month: Wild Tobacco Bush Latin name: Solanum mauritianum The Noisy Pitta bird has arrived in the Hastings rainforests for winter. It is a sign that the snakes, bugs and monitors have gone into winter torpor (sleep), because the Noisy Pitta is a ground dwelling bird. So now is the time to get on your gardening gloves and get rid of those weeds from your backyard. Both the tobacco bush and some destructive grasses will be slowing their growth as the weather cools.

At this time of year, poisonous tobacco bush, native to South America, is in full fruit.

Although the tree is often used as a naturalised shade tree in regeneration areas, the fruit should be removed, if not the whole plant.

Flowers: Distinctive flower is purple with a yellow centre are produced in dense branched clusters.

Leaves: They are large (20-30cm) distinctive oval leaves that are grey-green in colour and covered with felt-like hairs.

Fruit: Its fruit are green ripening to yellow globular berries (10-15 mm across).

What do I do if I find a wild tobacco bush in my backyard?

Roots will reshoot. Hand dig/pull young plants with gloves. For bigger trees, cut with a saw and paint with Roundup or other herbicide.

It may respond to a spray. Foliar spray plants to 2.5m with picloram/triclopyr (eg Grazon Extra) @ 5mL L-1 or cut-stump or chisel/drill-fill any sized plant with undiluted glyphosate (eg Roundup Biactive).

Autumn and Winter To Do List: Remove strange large looking grasses that form the biggest headaches for Port Macquarie Landcare including broadleafed paspalm (Paspalm mandiocanum), panic veldt grass (Ehrharta erecta) and flick grass Also remove Landcare busters like Taro, Brasilian nightshade, moth vine and impatiens.

A group of ladies meet at Kempsey Shire Library on the first Friday of every month to knit over a cuppa and chat as part of the Wrap With Love initiative

Ladies knitting for good cause

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC SOME talented local ladies are using their skills for a great cause.

The Wrap With Love Inc is a group of women who come together and knit at the Kempsey Shire Library once a month. The beautiful blankets and scarves they create are then distributed to aid agencies for donation to people suffering due to extreme cold weather during winter.

“The ladies enjoy using their skills for a good cause,” said Wrap With Love Inc Coordinator June Morley.

“We are always saying our fingers would probably all curl up into little balls without knitting.”

The Wrap With Love initiative started in 1992 and has hundreds of groups all around Australia filled with keen knitters. The Kempsey group has an attendance of between 10 and 12 people and it’s not just the knitting that keeps them coming.

“We solve the problems of the world every first Friday of the month,” laughed June. “People definitely join for the social atmosphere. The crochet ladies are really good too, they put a lot of the creations together by crocheting the squares and they look really nice when you’ve got the combination of knitting and crocheting.”

The local knitted goods are kindly transported by Macleay Valley Transport to a depot in Sydney for distribution. 2017 has been a busy year with the group already bringing in 88 blankets and 17 scarves. The ladies say they enjoy helping those in need and love hearing back from the people who receive them.

“The Sydney Wrap With Love send us a newsletter each month telling us where the

blankets and scarves have gone and also pictures of the people parading in them,” June said.

“They send us photos of all the other groups that do all the Wrap With Love knitting and sewing, so they keep us up to date and connected.

“Since the new hospital we haven’t had many requests for the blankets locally and even the nursing homes have their own knitting groups now.”

If there are any knitting, crochet or sewing fanatics out there, or anyone with extra materials, the Wrap With Love Inc in Kempsey want to hear from you.

“We need donations of 8-ply acrylic yarn if anybody has got any that are sitting in cupboards at home that they’re not using,” explained June.

“It would have to be acrylic because they’re washed in rivers and if it’s wool they will all just shrink up.

“Anybody is welcome to come along and join the group or they don’t even have to join the group, they can just come in and get the information from me and I’ll set them up with a starter pack and off they go,” said June.

“They can just drop them back at the library, and the squares, if they don’t want to sew them up themselves. That’s what we have a lot of trouble with, people having to sew them up.

“We had thousands of squares not so long ago and it took us about three or four months to get people to sew them up, so we’d love to have more people.”

MY first experience of the Feldenkrais Method was at a gym in Melbourne. A friend of mine had a bad back and told me she overcame it by having individual sessions with a Feldenkrais Practitioner.

I had no idea what she was talking about. In that gym I decided to try it, having suffered a whiplash and back injury in a car accident and had little success with chiro, physio etc.

Within a short time into my first lesson I thought “that’s more like it!”

I was learning to move again! Things, because of the injuries I had lost or forgotten, were being rediscovered. Soon after I was getting individual sessions as well as attending classes and I was so impressed with the method that I became a practitioner. Today I have no pain in the neck and back and a far better quality of life.

An upcoming workshop in Port Macquarie is designed to show people easy, pleasant and simple ways to improve their mobility and free up the spine.

We need not rely upon quick-fix pain killers that cause dependency but we can find ways to overcome pain by getting the brain to learn better ways to use oneself. That is called neuroplasticity - a buzzword that is rapidly gaining a greater audience.

The Feldenkrais Method was designed to utilise this innate ability and help people find ways to activate that skill, find better mobility and overcome pain without the use of chemical pain killers.

Tom Vudrag is a fully-qualified Feldenkrais Practitioner. He conducts regular classes in Coffs Harbour and elsewhere along with workshops for all types of injuries and disabilities. THE Port Macquarie community will benefit from a works collaboration between Sails Resort Port Macquarie and the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise by the installation of new shade sails at Port Macquarie’s Town Beach Park.

Residents and visitors will now be able to enjoy much needed shade in this popular space.

The Taphouse Group and Sails Resort were delighted to donate the iconic white sails from the front of the resort now in its final stages of a $20million make over.

Stewart Tonkin, Group Facilities and Asset Manager facilitated the removal of the sails from the resort.

“This is quite a momentous day for The Taphouse Group and the structure – these sails have been the symbol of the resort for nearly 33 years and have been the first thing to welcome guests on arrival,” he said.

“We are delighted to be able to donate this to the Port Macquarie Community and assist Sunrise Rotary with their ongoing community works.

This is fitting with The Taphouse Group’s philosophy of children, family and the community first in business.”

Malcolm McNeil Director of Community Services for Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise was rapt with the collaboration between the two entities.

“We are thankful to Sails Resort and the Taphouse Group for donating the sails to us and appreciate the opportunity to give them another life to the benefit of the wider community,” he said.

The installation of the new shade sails above the park at Town Beach is currently scheduled for later this year.

Fluoride ‘vote’

THE shock resignation of Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling, has presented an opportunity for Citizens Against Fluoridation Inc (CAF). to push for a plebiscite on the continued fluoridation of the Hastings water supply.

The poll could be held in conjunction with the upcoming council by-election planned for July.

According to CAF there was a council promise in 2011 to have a plebiscite before the introduction of fluoridation into the water supply.

This never happened and the process of fluoridation began in February 2012 – overturning the 1991 referendum result of 71% against.

The capital cost to build the infrastructure was borne by the State Government.

The ongoing cost is approximated at $250,00 p.a. which is at the ratepayer’s expense.

According to CAF the general public disquiet on the negative effects of fluoride on the general health of the population, of all ages, is now being realised.

Citizens Against Fluoridation Inc President, Paul Jones, says: “There is an opportunity now for all residents of the Hastings to have their say regarding fluoridation of their water supplies. We hope to engage with the community to gauge how much support there is for or against fluoridation and we can make a decision from there.”

Sailors wrap up top season

THERE were plenty of performances of note when the Port Macquarie Sailing Club held their recent annual presentation night.

The club championship is a series of six races spread throughout the season. The winner on yardstick for catamarans was Frank O’Rourke on Dino ahead of Dave Winter on Spica and Rob Barwick on Drift. Tony Kuhn on Stella won on handicap with Jack Corthals on Harpic second.

Simon and Elsa Gandy in Voyager won the club championship on yardstick for monohulls.

Paul Robertson in Flembouyant was second and Stuart Symons in Big Bang was third.

Steve Bohlsen in Splash Dance was the winner on handicap.

The spring series of races are the weekly races held in the first half of the season, up until the end of the year. The catamaran yardstick winner was Dino followed by Stella and Harpic. Spica was the handicap winner ahead of Drift.

The yardstick winner of the spring series for monohulls was Voyager, then Big Bang and Splash Dance. The handicap winner was Tony Walker in Deep Purple ahead of Flembouyant.

The weekly races held in the second half of the season make up the summer series, and the catamaran division was won on yardstick by Dino, ahead of Stella and Drift. Spica was the winner on handicap.

The monohull summer series winner on yardstick was Voyager, followed by Deep Purple and Splash Dance. Flembouyant won on handicap.

Another six race days spread throughout the season are dedicated to a series of up to five sprint races on each day. The winner of the catamaran division of the sprint series on yardstick was Stella, then Dino and Spica. The handicap winner was Harpic ahead of Drift.

CLUB Championships: The major pairs final between D. Barrett and C. Murray will be played Sunday, May 21 at 1pm.

Pennants: Grade 1, round 10 defeated SWR 8.5 – 1.5 (62-51) to win the section.

SHARRON McNamara and Sue Woods were our representatives at the Women’s Golf Central North Coast Tournament in Gloucester on May 2-3. Sharron peaked on the second day of play with a score of 31, coming in as runner-up in her division. She also scored a NTP in the field of 84 players. Great work Sharron!

THURSDAY golf at Port Macquarie was a single stableford event. Alan Watts had the best round of the day with a terrific 40 points to take out B grade. Alan’s front nine of four over par set him up for the round. Runner-up in B grade was John Oates with 37 points on a c/b from Neil Black.

Winner in A grade was Garry Kemp with 38

points on a c/b from runner-up- Bruce Johnson.

Garry had a terrific back nine of one over par to secure the c/b. Third was Paul Moon with 37 points. Winner in C grade was Peter McFarland with 37 points on a c/b from runner-up Rodney Gill and third-placed Dave Ritchie. In the end it came down to the last three holes with McFarland too good.

The winner of the scratch score was Jackson Jubelin with a one over par round for 35 points.

Jackson is playing very consistent golf.

The ball competition went down to 32 points on a c/b. NTP’s went to Pat McLoughlin, Barry Tink, Stephen Tessede and John McGrath.

Saturday at Port Macquarie Golf Club was a two-ball best ball stableford with a single stableford in conjunction.

Winners of the two-ball event were Andrew Goulding and Tim Gwyther with a magic 48 points. Goulding and Gwyther played good team golf to combine for a par round. Runners up were David Bailey and Randall Beazley with 47 points on a c/b from Bob Jones and Terry Hoare. Bailey and Beazley combined well around the back nine for three over par to win the c/b. Barry Catterall had the round of the day with 42 points. Catterall was consistent with 4 over par the front nine and five over par the back nine. Bob Higham won A grade with a solid 38 points and C grade went to Barry Saunders with a good round for 39 points.

The scratch score winner was David Bagust with a par round and 36 points.

The ball competition went down to 33 points on a c/b. NTP’s went to Michael Brenton, Brian Somers, Kyle Rathbone and Stuart Rayner.

Tough comp just gets tougher YOUR Local Independent (YLI) has said this several times already, but let’s say it again – this would have to be one of the toughest NRL comps to tip in years.

Just when you think you have a team worked out … SMACK! … the opposite result to what you tipped.

Last weekend, if you followed YLI, you would have tipped 4 from eight. But that was a miracle to get that amount.

We tipped one of the two big upsets – Titans over Storm - yet we finished with just four correct answers.

Well done to the Knights for getting up.

But really! The Raiders are supposed to be a premiership threat.

The Cowboys are not a one-trick pony. But without JT they do struggle. Yet they kept the Dogs quiet.
