Above and beyond Hats off to a top cop

By NIKALA SIM A POLICE officer with a big heart has been awarded Rotary Clubs of NSW Commissioner’s Customer Service Excellence Award.

Mid North Coast Local Area Command officer Martin Gampe attended a tragic accident last year and just knew the family involved would need help.

“Some people need our help and some people don’t,” Detective Senior Constable Gampe said.

“Some people don’t know how to ask.

“The family were grieving for a child and I just kept tabs on them.”

As Christmas approached the Laurietonbased officer got hold of photographs of the child from the grandmother.

He gave these to his daughter who works for a high-end photography company.

“They printed up around $3500 worth of photos for free without hesitation,” he said.

CRESCENT Head Public School will attend the Schools Spectacular in Sydney for the fifth year in a row, thanks to the support and encouragement of its seaside community.

This colourful and dazzling event is an annual celebration of the NSW public school system’s talented children.

According to the Department of Education and Training, the Schools Spectacular is unequalled in the world in terms of sheer size, scale and scope.

It is also an iconic cultural event showcasing students of different ages, cultures, skills and socio-economic backgrounds from public schools in metropolitan, rural and remote regions of New South Wales.

Nineteen Crescent Head songbirds will join a 2300-strong choir, 2300 diverse dancers, an 80-piece symphony, and a world-class band, all performing at the Sydney Olympic Stadium’s Qudos Bank Arena on Friday, November 25 and Saturday, November 26.

There will also be a large variety of outstanding solo performers.

These passionate performers, family supporters, volunteer teachers and their local communities have helped their children raise funds and rehearse. All shared a part in making the Schools Spectacular inspiring and entertaining.

Crescent Head Public School’s organiser for the event, Assistant Principal Peta Harris, said it was the fifth year the school had successfully auditioned for the event.

“In March this year we submitted a video audition of our students singing Lest We Forget, which is a song about the Anzacs,” she explained.

When Peta and fellow volunteer, Kindergarten teacher Lisa Wickham, found out their school was successful in May, they were both ecstatic.

Peta and Lisa attended a teacher’s meeting at Homebush before receiving the song tracks in September.

Since then rehearsals and fund raising have been a priority, with the small surf town raising about $6000 to fund the trip down to Sydney.

“The local community worked really hard and we’re really lucky they helped us get there,” Peta said.

“They are so generous and if we didn’t have the community’s support, we just couldn’t have

afforded to go.”

For Peta that would have been a great shame because attending the Schools Spectacular is the most amazing and inspirational experience for the children.

Crescent’s 19 songsters will sing in 24 different songs and be a part of the greater choir in two full days of rehearsals and four performances.

Peta and Lisa and their charges will be away for six days staying at Olympic Park.

Last week they joined in with all the participating state schools via YouTube for their first live rehearsal.

“We are expected to know all the repertoire and performances like everyone one else,” Peta said.

“The performances are the easy part,” added Lisa.

“It’s the logistics of getting all the children fed and organised that will be huge.”

Other schools performing in our region are the Hastings Secondary College, Wauchope High School and Wauchope Public School.

“It was a good thing and a bad thing,” the officer said.

“Everyone deals with grief differently.”

He was amazed the family, who he encouraged into counselling, had found the time to nominate him for an award.

“It is very humbling because they had gone through a huge tragedy and made time to nominate me,” Det Senr Const Gampe said.

“I have grandchildren the age of their child and it hit hard with me.”

The 55-year-old said that when he was a young man being a police officer never entered his mind.

He was steered in the direction of law enforcement by an uncle who was a police officer.

“I like helping people,” he said, “and want to make a difference.

“I hate seeing women and children hurt – for me it is intolerable.

“I’ve seen some terrible things happen but I love my job and they’ll have to wheel me out of here in a box.”

More disaster funding FEDERAL Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has welcomed the announcement of further disaster assistance for local farmers in response to severe storms and flooding earlier this year.

Mr Hartsuyker said the funding will assist eligible banana growers and oyster farmers throughout the region whose operations were impacted by the floods.

“The devastation caused by this year’s East Coast Low and associated flooding has put a lot of our primary producers in financial hardship,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“And it’s often the case that insurance either doesn’t cover, or provides only just enough compensation to keep farmers going. Many farmers end up unable to recover their losses.”

Mr Hartsuyker said grants of up to $10,000 have been made available under the jointlyfunded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

“This funding will provide assistance with repair and/or rebuild efforts such as salvaging crops and stock, and damaged equipment.” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“The recovery grants are in addition to concessional loans and freight subsidy assistance already made available to primary producers in response to the disaster.

“The Coalition Government stands ready to assist affected local farmers to get back on their feet, and I am pleased to see this funding announced.”

Among other things, the Committee will examine whether the existing processes of the Commission are sufficient to ensure that trivial or vexatious complaints to the Commission, and complaints which have no reasonable prospects of success, are identified and dismissed at an early stage.

It will also examine ways to ensure that complaints are dealt with in an open and transparent way, without unreasonable delay, and in a manner which ensures those subject to complaints are afforded natural

justice.

The review of provisions of Part IIA of the Racial Discrimination Act was recommended by the Australian Law Reform Commission in its Report on Traditional Rights and Freedoms – Encroachments by Commonwealth Laws, released earlier this year.

The review of the Commission’s complaints-handling procedure was invited by the Commission itself.

It is important that Australia strikes the right balance between laws which protect social harmony and mutual respect, and the fundamental democratic value of freedom of

speech. The purpose of the inquiry is to ensure that we have that balance right. Equally, it is important that the machinery for human rights protection in Australia operates in such a way as to ensure procedural fairness, and that it cannot be used as a vehicle for vexatious complaints.

I encourage all interested groups to put their views before the inquiry in a constructive and mutually respectful discussion.

I have asked the Committee to report by February 28, 2017.

I HAVE today asked the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights to inquire and report on two issues relating to freedom of speech in Australia. The first is whether the operation of Part IIA of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975(Cth) (including ss. 18C and 18D) impose unreasonable restrictions on freedom of speech. The second, related, matter, is whether the complaintshandling procedures of the Australian Human Rights Commission should be reformed. The reference has been made under s. 7(c) of the Human Rights (Parliamentary Scrutiny) Act

A bridge too far?

THE highway is now blocked and the Settlement Point ferry is the only way emergency services can get to some areas.

The ferry has been crippled by a mechanical failure for about a week now. The council had no redundant systems backup in place.

Thumbs Up TO the Port Macquarie Base Hospital and its Pink Lady volunteers. We live 100kms away, and are in our 80s. The car park was full when we arrived for my husband’s surgery.

One of your volunteers helped us find a park then drove us back to the hospital in a buggy. Everyone was lovely to us and couldn’t have been more caring. The next day they even called to find out if my husband was OK. Thanks to all for making our visit wonderful.

Thumbs Down TO the person who complained about the automated announcement system at the Port Macquarie Airport. I work at the airport and it was my idea to have the system installed.

And yes we do need it because a lot of people don’t read the signage at the airport telling the people about the car parking time limits and charges. Since the system’s been installed it has reduced the amount of queuing at the boom gate exit.

When people don’t realise they have gone over the time limit and owe money when they get to the boom gate it then causes a traffic jam and delays people even longer. Since you have complained about it you must of heard it so it’s doing its job. I’m proud to work for the Hastings Council and take pride in my work. Everybody wants to bag the council no matter what they do.

TO Port Macquarie-Hastings Council surely all the roads works can be done at night time from 7pm to 5am under lights So it doesn’t slow the traffic down during the peak hours. How long does it take to do Lake Rd? Snails move faster. Come on guys get in and have a go?

Thumbs up IT was very disappointing to witness a large group of international visitors ignore the Remembrance Service by walking through the crowd that had gathered to pay their respects. Very poor behaviour.

A WEEK ago today and we all woke up to the news that Donald Trump is the new President elect of the USA. Mainstream and social media have gone nuts and we are now being swamped with the post mortems of the election campaign.

Loads of people I know have a ‘who cares’ attitude. All good, just don’t complain if or when the proverbial hits the fan!

Just to clear it up, I don’t like Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton… so for those of you who think it is OK to bombard me with your hate mail and Facebook posts…I don’t like and would not have voted for either of them!

The focus now needs to be on Mr Trump. He has been elected by the people of America…albeit a very divided people of America.

It’s now time to deal with it, accept it and move forward. Give the man some space, I’m sure he has got plenty to keep him busy for the next four years and he is going to need the space to work out a plan of attack.

Let Donald show his true colours. He might surprise us all and become the best POTUS the world has ever seen or he could end up being the biggest nightmare ever to have walked the earth. I doubt it will be middle ground, more like a world-wide epidemic of Bipolar.

Manic or depressive!

Electric cars get green light for Lord Howe

WHEN Marine Rescue Port Macquarie recently acquired a new boat it created a storage issue for their rapid response, life-saving jet ski.

This was because the new state-of-the art rescue vessel was longer than the model it replaced.

Enquiries into a solution led to the only option of extending the pontoon to house a storage shed.

Unit Commander Neil Yates said finance for the project was of great concern.

“We rely on donations to provide our service and with running costs of around $100,000 per year we don’t have money instantly available

for extra projects,” Mr Yates said.

The Unit Commander had applied for funding from Crown Lands but had unfortunately been unsuccessful, he said.

Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams stepped up to advocate when she discovered the emergency service was unable to provide a ten-minute response, and was instead taking 30 minutes to get their jet ski into the water.

“My view is Marine Rescue provides such an essential service both to locals and visitors,” Mrs Williams said.

“They rely upon support from the community very heavily so I asked Minister for Lands and Water Niall Blair to investigate if there was funding that may assist.”

Emergency funding of $32,100 has now been released to Marine Rescue Port Macquarie through the Public Reserve Management Fund Program.

This includes $4000 to install safety anchor points on the roof of the Westport Park boat shed with the remainder to be used to build the pontoon shed.

The anchor points will allow for tradespeople to safely access the roof and save on future hire costs of a cherry picker, Mr Yates said.

The next step was to submit a development application to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for the rapid response vehicle storage.

“This is really fantastic,” Mr Yates said.

IN a move which aims to reduce the environmental footprint at this World Heritage listed location, the NSW Government has approved the use of electric vehicles on Lord Howe Island.

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said: “We have been working with the Lord Howe Island Board to develop a conditional registration scheme to help with the Island’s vision towards a more sustainable approach to travel.”

“In line with the Island’s switch to renewable energy from next year, Roads and Maritime Services will fast-track a conditional registration scheme to allow for the broader use of electric vehicles, including golf buggies.

“Currently, residents rely on a fortnightly shipment of diesel and petrol delivered to the Island from Port Macquarie,” Mrs Williams said.

“Residents and businesses will significantly benefit from this change, which will mean people can recharge at their own convenience, wherever and whenever they like.

“Permitting this type of vehicle on the road will also provide motorists with a cheaper ‘green’ alternative compared with other electric vehicles on the market.

“At only 15 square kilometres, the compact size of the Island means there is constant interaction between vehicle drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, which is why any golf buggy approved for general use must meet strict vehicle standards to ensure safety isn’t compromised.

“Currently there are a small number of golf buggies with conditional registration on Lord Howe Island but travel restrictions apply,” Mrs Williams said.

“Approved vehicles under the new arrangement will have a 25 km/h maximum speed limit and unlike arrangements in place elsewhere, there will be no distance or time limitations, they can be used day or night.

Registration will cost around $60 per year.

By NIKALA SIM TYPE 1 diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening disease which, unlike other types, is not caused by diet or lifestyle.

Port Macquarie’s Charlotte Kennedy was only a toddler when diagnosed, and now relies upon a near-constant supply of insulin, to stay alive.

The nine-year-old is now a happy, healthy girl but without prompt diagnosis this story would have been very different.

“Charlotte had a bad cough for six months when she was two years old,” Charlotte’s mother Emily Acheson said.

“She was clearly not herself – she looked unwell, was very thirsty, went to the toilet all the time and was very lethargic.

“We got a phone call from the day care centre one day because she was just laying down, awake but unresponsive.”

An emergency trip to the Port Macquarie Base Hospital saw Charlotte diagnosed within 15 minutes.

“She was immediately hooked up to a number of machines because her blood sugar level was 49 when it should be between 4 and 6,” Mrs Acheson said.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin - the hormone that turns food into energy.

The disease strikes both children and adults suddenly and, without diagnosis and the supply of insulin, it will kill you, says fellow sufferer Susan Judd.

The mother of two was diagnosed at the age of 27.

“I knew something was wrong because I had no motor skills and was losing weight despite eating lots and lots of cake.”

Mrs Judd now has a permanent cannula into her tummy through which a machine pumps insulin every couple of minutes.

These machines are expensive, she said, and people who cannot afford them must inject the insulin they need.

She must also test her blood sugar, through a painful pin prick test to a finger, before and after each meal and at regular intervals throughout the day.

Diagnosis, support and medical care had all improved, Mrs Judd said, largely due to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

The organisation is the largest nongovernment funder of type 1 diabetes research

in Australia.

Mrs Judd together with Charlotte, their families, friends and the community will walk to raise funds for research and a cure on November 19.

The One Walk is a world-wide event which brings together around a million people and raises over $85 million to improve treatment and find a cure.

Port Macquarie’s event, between 10am and 1pm, is also aimed at raising awareness of the disease.

The 4km One Walk will begin at Town Green, then head off to Westport Park then east to the end of the breakwall then back to Town Green for lots of fun.

For the children there will be a miniolympics, face painting, balloons, prizes and a colouring competition and adults can try their luck in the raffle.

The Lions Club will host a barbecue and other vendors will offer coffee, milkshakes, ice cream, cupcakes, drinks, fruit and snacks.

Medical device companies, diabetes educators, and dieticians will all be on hand to discuss diabetes type 1.

It’s time for us to help ‘Digit’

HIS name is already etched in local history and now it’s time for locals to give something back to the iconic Alan ‘Digit’ Dick.

Many people throughout the Port Macquarie region will already know of the oyster farmer, life member of the Port Macquarie Surf Life saving Club and Port Macquarie Walruses, but what they might not know is that this local hero is going through his own battle.

On October 6, 2015, Alan suffered a massive stroke, which left him paralysed down the right-hand side of his body.

He has been a resident at Garden Village Nursing Home since December 2015, and receives very good and compassionate medical care.

However, the cost of care and medications is high leaving Alan and his family with few other options but to sell Alan’s small house in Melaleuca Village.

“There is more outgoings than there is incoming,” said Ken Wilson, good friend, fellow surf club member and organizer of the December fundraiser for ‘Digit’.

“Health-wise it’s not good for a person who’s been very active his whole life,” said Mr Wilson of Alan.

The fund-raiser will hopefully alleviate some of the financial stress on Alan and his family. It will be an afternoon of fun including trivia and an auction.

“The trivia will include a lot of small prizes,” Mr Wilson said. “The event will involve a lot long-time Port Macquarie families, especially ‘Dig’ being the last of the original oyster farmers in Port Macquarie.”

Alan was also a member of the local marine rescue unit and was boat captain for a lengthy period. During his time with the unit he took part in a number of rescues, one in particular was outstanding.

Alan ‘Digit’ Dick, far right with his hand on the rail, with members of the Port Macquarie Walruses. Alan is a life member of the swim club One night Alan captained the marine rescue boat with offsider, Brian Denyer, and put to sea to rescue a yacht in distress off Port Macquarie.

He and Brian successfully secured the vessel at sea, near Bird Rock, and brought the family ashore. For this Alan was awarded a bravery medal by the Royal Humane Society, which was presented to him by then NSW Governor Sir Roden Cutler.

Mr Wilson first met Alan while working in the jet rescue team in an event on the Gold Coast in 1979 and can still remember Alan’s firm hand shake.

“He recognised my jet rescue jacket and

walked straight up to me, shook my hand and introduced himself,” said Mr Wilson.

“The first thing Alan does is grab your hand and give it a good hard grip and a shake, and he continued to do so every Sunday morning at the club in Port Macquarie.”

Alan has always been there to help others when they were in need of it, says Mr Wilson.

“We had a fella at the club who had some problems and Alan took him under his wing,” explained Mr Wilson. “He would take him across to the oyster farming and get him to work so he could earn a few dollars. Alan took him to heart, the same as the community is doing to

“Alan has got a great recall, he can remember anyone in town. He is just a good bloke. He laughed from the heart. And I guess that’s what he can still do now, laugh from the heart. But he always reckons his life and heart is at the surf club.”

The fundraiser for Alan ‘Digit’ Dick will be held on Sunday, December 11 from 2pm at the Port Macquarie Surf Lifesaving Club.

I came to Kempsey in 2001. Best move I ever made!

What do you love most about the Macleay?

I love the people I’ve met. I love the mountains, valleys, river and beaches.

Where do you work and what do you love about your work?

I own Tanyas Dog Wash & Grooming in Tozer Street, West Kempsey. I love seeing my furry friends and their puppy parents.

What do you like least about your work?

There isn’t much I don’t like. Dogs are easy to please, I do wish their owners would use me more for their dogs’ grooming. More baths and blow dries in between grooms to keep them knot free, nails trimmed and skin healthy.

How do you start your day?

With coffee lol. Lots of it!

What do you do in your spare time?

I spend time with my family and friends. I would love to have more time to spend in the garden.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

I’m proud of my children Josh, 23, Jack, 10 and Bronte, 9, they are awesome kids, I’m very lucky. Next would be my new shop in Tozer Street, I’m lucky to have so many wonderful clients who trust me with their dogs.

Grants on offer for water safety APPLICATIONS for water safety grants open: Community grants are now being offered for projects to reduce drowning and improve water safety in NSW. The Water Safety Fund Community Grants Program provides $4.5 million over three years to not-for-profit and community groups with experience delivering water safety initiatives.

According to Royal Life Saving Society Australia, 96 people drowned in NSW waterways in 2015-16, the majority at beaches, followed by rivers, creeks and streams.

This is a tragic statistic and that is why this government has allocated $11 million over three years to the Water Safety Fund.

The aim of the fund is to reduce drowning in NSW by supporting projects that increase water safety in high risk locations, population groups and activities.

For example, high risk activities might include rock fishing, safety in the surf or alcohol and drug use around the water.

The Community Grants Program is an important project and I am encouraging not-forprofit organisations and community groups to submit a proposal.”

Grants from $50,000 to $250,000 are available for projects starting in 2017, such as targeted education campaigns, signage and safety aids, and research.

SIGNAGE on a new feature wall will formally identify the iconic Tacking Point headland for the thousands of visitors that visit each year.

The signage is a part of Stage 5 of the Tacking Point Lighthouse Project opened recently by the member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams and Deputy Mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council (PMHC), Lisa Intemann.

“The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise are to be congratulated for their outstanding contribution to this iconic location,” said Mrs Williams.

“Thanks to their ongoing and united efforts, this popular site has been transformed into an appealing and accessible lookout that both locals and visitors can now enjoy.”

Funding for Stage 5 was provided through a State Government Community Building Partnership Program grant of $25,159 obtained by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise, an equal allocation from PMHC and supplementation by Sunrise Rotary.

Sunrise Rotary adopted the restoration and enhancement of the Tacking Point Lighthouse and surrounding headland as a Community Service Project in 2010.

Since that time, in partnership with PMHC, Sunrise Rotary has led the transformation of this popular site to where locals now consider it a priority location to take their visitors. The Stage 5 works has included restoration of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage.

A LONG time ago I was asked the difference between a plebiscite and a referendum, but I declined to put my answer in print, firstly because it was too hard to answer in a way that people, including myself, would understand, and secondly because it was a dry subject.

The question has again been put to me. I will try to answer it this time, because it seems to have been upgraded to important in some people’s eyes.

In brief, the way I understand it, a plebiscite is a question to gauge the will of the people, but a referendum asks the people to vote on a piece of legislation that has been brought forward for the constitution.

Ambrose Bierce in his Devil’s Dictionary of 1881 said a plebiscite was a popular vote to ascertain the will of the sovereign.

This word, in print, goes back to 1553.

In 1658 it was said to represent law made by the common people.

Much later, a pleb came to represent one of the common people.

The plebe was adopted by the United States was a member of the lower class at a military or naval academy.

used it. But in 1884 Herbert Spencer in Man Versus State asked: “If people by a plebiscite elect a man despot over them, do they remain free because the despotism was of their own making?”

Don’t expect me to answer. I’m just quoting someone else.

As for referendum, this goes back only to the 19th century. But the meaning is the voters receive a question and they are expected to vote on whether they want this question enacted in law. The plural used to be referenda, but most books now accept referendums.

The explanation on this word and associated words goes on in my big dictionary for several pages.

In 1895 in England they had a referendum on the practice of referee baiting.

Plenty of examples exist where a parliament,

miracles still happen

or even a jury, can’t make up its mind.

Linguistically, the phrase seems to derive from the sense of “hung” to mean caught, suspended or delayed (“I got hung up at the office”).

That’s a good phrase that covers all eventualities when you were where you shouldn’t have been.

A hung parliament is one in which no political party has an absolute majority of seats. This term was first used in Britain in 1974, but hang or hung has been used to indicate a situation that’s indecisive since at least the 14th century, when it was became linked to the idea of suspense. The phrase hung jury - one that cannot agree - has been used in the USA at least since late in the 19th century.

A hung parliament results in a lot of horse trading before anything passes.

But we can all hope the Australian parliament, at least, can decide on legislation. Otherwise, we may all have to go to another election.

Hastings opens doors, hearts

A TWO-WAY sharing of culture has left all participants feeling richer from the experience.

Twelve Hastings families, who recently hosted migrant and refugee women from Sydney, learnt about African, Afghani, Chinese, Iraqi and Irani culture.

And the visiting migrant and refugee women learnt that inside we are all the same.

“If you don’t know our stories then you never really know who we are,” Maria Atai, originally from Afghanistan, said.

The mother visited Port Macquarie with her two young daughters, mother, sister-in-law and aunt.

“Thank you very, very much for opening your doors,” Mrs Atai said.

Her daughter, Narges, said everyone she had met was very good, very nice and very friendly.

At the end of the visit Narges’ mother told her that she would one day like to see her open the door of her home to people just as had been done

by Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group members for them.

Support group co-founder Tin Hta Nu left Burma after the revolution of 1988.

She first found refuge in Thailand and settled in Australia in 1991 after being granted skilled migrant status.

“Refugees want to contribute to the richness of our community,” she said.

“The ladies who visited are often at home

and don’t have much exposure to the wider Australian community.”

Community Migrant Resource Centre in Sydney cultural exchange program coordinator Rosemary Kariuki-Fyfe said visits to rural and regional Australia were very important.

“It gives the women confidence and then they know all people are the same,” she said.

“One woman said to me she didn’t know people could love her like this and that is what it is all about.”

The program, which has run since 2008, has

seen a number of women relocate to the towns they have visited.

Volunteer organisations like the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group offer assistance with work, study and formation of friendships.

The 26 women also visited Roto House, Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, had lunch at Shelley Beach and enjoyed a farewell lunch in Kendall.

They were hosted by families from Kempsey, Pembrooke, Blackmans Point, Rawden Island, Port Macquarie and the Camden Haven.

Landcare’s weed of the month: Lantana

LAST month Port Macquarie’s 170 Landcare volunteers invited residents to monitor their gardens/land to remove the worst of weed plants that spread into Landcare’s regeneration areas by birds, animals and wind.

This helps Landcare strengthen native vegetation remnants in Port Macquarie creating continuous wildlife corridors, linking crucial sanctuaries such as Lake Innes and Sea Acres.

Native animals may then move more freely.

These areas are used by community for both leisure and education.

Weed of the month of November: Common name: Lantana Latin name: Lantana camara Family: verbenaceae This common noxious environmental weed invades forest areas, competes with native seedlings and can overwhelm large areas. In your garden Lantana can be a small weed before quickly spreading.

Identifiable in November and summer: • Heavily branched shrub, often prickly.

• Leaves have a distinct smell when crushed are 6 cm long with fine hairs. They are bright green above, paler beneath and have roundtoothed edges.

• Leaves grow opposite on the stem • Flower are compound, pale cream to yellow, white, pink, orange and red.

Removal: Shallowly rooted, so seedlings and small plants can be hand-pulled. Larger plants can be dug or mattocked. Chemical: Foliar spray only when plants are healthy and follow label directions regarding seasonality. Use glyphosate (eg RoundUp Biactive), dilute for foliage or concentrate for root stumps. Take chemical safety precautions with children and pets around.

If there is a small area of native vegetation near you that contains weeds, you may wish to monitor it. Contact PMH Council or Landcare for it to be assessed for complying with council’s strategic plans. If the area just needs some weeds removed for regeneration, it may be a simple matter to gain permission. If it is a larger area, contact Landcare so that you might gain support. Remember that you need permission to work on council or government reserves.

Still case of rate rise or rate lies?

JUST as the campaigning started to ramp up before the recent council elections, the Mayor participated in a local radio interview on the subject of potential rate rises.

This interview was in response to mayoral candidate Peta Pinson exposing council’s adopted Fit for the Future proposal which included a plan to raise rates by a staggering cumulative 52.4%.

In this interview, the message that Peter Besseling put across to listeners was that there were no plans for rate rises in the foreseeable future and definitely none in the current budget plans. He went on to suggest that the plan that council had adopted in its Fit for the Future submission nearly a year earlier was simply ‘a hypothetical scenario’ that council had no intention of following through on.

A quick google search or a read back through some news copy from the election campaign period shows quite clearly the Mayor, his voting bloc and group ticket, along with their unofficial fifth vote in the chamber Lisa Intemann,

emphatically deny there were any plans to raise rates. This was even in the face of an IPART report that clearly stated PMHC planned to increase rates to 52.4% but had not yet consulted with the community to come to that position.

The Besseling majority candidates even used the slogan ‘Rate Rise or Rate Lies’ which implied that anyone who was campaigning on the platform of rejecting council’s ‘plan’ to raise rates was a liar and/or fear-mongering.

Just two months after the Mayor was returned with his bloc of votes, we see council neck deep into a campaign to increase rates. At this stage,

Pink Ladies just keep giving PORT Macquarie Base Hospital’s hard working Pink Ladies are known for their kind words and friendly smiles while visiting patients with their magazine and treats trolley.

However, the volunteers recently turned their attention to a different type of trolley – an Oxlyog trolley system, which has been welcomed in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit as a vital piece of equipment that makes it easier for nursing staff to move critically ill patients.

The hospital’s Nursing Unit Manager for Intensive Care, Patrick Regan, said the trolley system, which cost $5000, was specifically designed to help transport critically ill patients throughout the hospital and was a muchappreciated gift from the Pink Ladies.

“The Intensive Care Unit often transports critically ill patients to other parts of the hospital, including the operating theatres,” Mr Regan said.

“By necessity, our staff take large amounts of equipment with them to keep our patients safe. It’s not unusual for staff to have to move ventilators, pumps, monitors, oxygen, medication and airway equipment with the patient.

“The transport system purchased by the Pink Ladies connects to the bed so that the bed and trolley act as one unit. All the equipment needed can be attached to the device, which means our medical and nursing staff can focus on the patient and not the trolleys or the tension on equipment lines and devices.”

not the full 52.4% but part the way there in the form of a 4.43% special rate variation that they want made permanent which will be added on top of any rate peg amount for the next year of around 2.5%.

With the current Council push to raise rates, it makes you wonder who in fact was telling the porkies during the campaign doesn’t it?

Given the $224,000,000 cash-stash of ratepayer and taxpayer funds in reserve accounts, there is simply no justification whatsoever for increasing rates.

Before the impending vote to raise rates, there’s still some time to contact council to share your view on their planned rate rises and where you think they should ‘strategically place them’. Dementia funding

APPLICATIONS are now open for the Dementia and Aged Care Services (DACS) Research and Innovation Funding Round.

Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Ken Wyatt said $34 million in grants are now being offered to eligible organisations for innovative projects that will support older Australians to access the care they need, where and when they need it.

“This funding will help to identify barriers that restrict access and choice for consumers in the current aged care system and make sure the special needs of consumers from diverse backgrounds are met, both appropriately and sensitively,” Mr Wyatt said.

“This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex.”

Grants will be made available in six priority areas, including: • support for existing and emerging challenges in dementia; • better support for services targeting people from diverse backgrounds; • developments that support innovation in aged care; • support for activities that focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; • capital support for activities that focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; • seed funding for adaptive technology projects so that consumers can stay in their own home.

Mr Wyatt said the projects will help the aged care sector remain flexible and adapt to new needs as Australia’s population ages.

“The 2015 Intergenerational Report reveals that the number of people aged 85 years and over will grow to nearly 2 million by 2055,” Mr Wyatt said.

Forest Courtyard already popular

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Port Macquarie Museum’s new Forest Courtyard is already proving very popular.

The courtyard has had many visitors who have enjoyed the architect-designed outdoor space featuring a Tallowwood pergola and water-inspired wave seating carved from Blackbutt, all renewably sourced from the forests surrounding Port Macquarie.

“We have had quite a number of people wander in and look at the new courtyard,” said Clive Smith, President of the Historical Society at the Port Macquarie Museum. “Everyone that has been in has loved it.”

The courtyard is also home to Forest the Koala, created by local artist Pauline Roods, a part of the well-known Hello Koala Sculpture Trail.

“You can walk into the courtyard and sit down there. There’s also an interpretive panel about forests and the history of forestry and what you can do in forests locally,” said Mr Smith. “It’s a place for rest and contemplation.”

Forestry Corporation of NSW, who have worked with the Port Macquarie Museum to bring a showcase of the North Coast’s forest hardwoods, visitor information about the region’s forests and the rich timber history.

“In the region, forestry was probably the first industry,” Mr Smith said.

“The only other industry that would have been going on here would be just growing food for the local consumption.”

This new courtyard has also inspired a new exhibition at the Museum, ‘Timber’. The exhibition tells the story of timber-getting,

milling and the everyday lives of timber workers in the Hastings.

“We are hoping at some stage in the future to make the courtyard the main entrance to the museum,” said Mr Smith. “It’s a permanent courtyard, it should be there for the next ten years at least.”

The Port Macquarie Museum is located at 22 Clarence Street, Port Macquarie, within Port Macquarie’s cultural heritage precinct.

Friends from across the globe

FOR decades the Kempsey Friendship Force Club has been promoting global understanding throughout Australia and across barriers and oceans.

Founded in 1987, the club’s slogan is ‘Changing the Way You See the World’.

Eager to embrace this admirable philosophy, the club is this week hosting 18 ambassadors from the Niigata Friendship Force Club in Japan, and is showing off some of our beautiful Mid North Coast.

Exchange Director for this visit, Louise Lindsell, said they have an exciting and interesting schedule planned for their overseas guests, who have never been to Australia before.

Visitors are hosted in club members’ homes, sharing meals, conversation and everyday life, and this exploration of each other’s culture leads to understanding and acceptance.

It also fosters a desire to serve the global village we all live in.

While touring our slice of paradise, the Japanese ambassadors will visit local beaches and schools in the Macleay Valley, plus the Slim Dusty Centre, and will play golf next to grazing kangaroos at Kempsey.

The Valley of the Mist at Macksville is also on the agenda, as is Eungai Creek Buffalo.

Port Macquarie is on the itinerary too with the group visiting Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, Ricardoes Tomatoes and Strawberries, Cassegrain Wines, North Brother Mountain Lookout and the Billabong Zoo. Louise and her husband, Jim, - also the club’s president - are really looking forward to the visit.

“Every host we’ve stayed with and the visitors who have stayed with us always kept in touch,” she said.

“We always try and stay in touch with them too.”

Since 2008, the club’s members have visited

Members of the Kempsey Friendship Force Club, Kempsey Shire Councillor Leo Hauville, and students and staff at Aldavilla Public School welcome the Niigata Friendship Force Club from Japan for a tour of the school as part of their exchange program with Australia China, Japan, Belgium, England, the USA, New Zealand, Russia, Estonia and Canada.

Next year they plan to visit Japan and South Korea.

The club has also welcomed visitors from countries like the USA, Brazil, New Zealand, Mexico, Belgium and now Japan.

Domestically, the club has hosted other clubs from the Central Coast, Salisbury, Mount Barker and Melbourne.

It has also visited places like Casterton, Mount Barker and Hobart, and plans to go to the

Sunshine Coast next year.

“They try to match you with like-minded people,” Louise explained.

“And keeping in contact with such a diverse range of people is incredible.”

The first exchange Louise and Jim took part in was to the USA in 2012.

They visited North Carolina, Kansas and Phoenix Arizona.

“We loved it,” Jim said.

His favourite places were the Grand Canyon and the famous ‘Western’ town Tombstone.

“The diversity was amazing,” said Louise.

“The club shows you a part of the world that may not be on the tourist radar.”

Jim explained that you aren’t confined to going on your own club’s exchanges and can apply to any club anywhere in the world.

“Your club requests where members would like to go about two years beforehand,” he added.

After being members for over four years, Louise and Jim now have travelling in their blood.

As members pay for their own airfare, they usually spend additional time in that country before or after the scheduled visit to really take advantage of their time overseas.

The Kempsey Friendship Force Club meets once every couple of months and rotates between members’ homes.

Macleay Community Gateway (MCG) provides support to people with a disability, the elderly, carers and people who are disadvantaged.

The not-for-profit organisation provides government-funded services including Home Care Packages, Commonwealth Home Support Programs, Compacks and Community Care Support Programs.

People on discharge from hospital can receive up to six weeks assistance.

There are also day programs for seniors, younger people with a disability and those living with dementia.

The dozen field support staff and eight case managers, program coordinators, administrators

and team leader work as a team underpinned by respect, trust and cooperation.

The MCG team are all dedicated to the provision of human happiness, and act towards this with integrity at all times.

Playground for Horseshoe Bay THE South West Rocks community celebrated a successful partnership with Kempsey Shire Council recently at the opening of the Horseshoe Bay playground.

The threat of rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic families who turned up to see Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell and South West Rocks Sport and Recreation Association president Anna Shields cut the ribbon to officially unveil the public facility.

The project has driven an incredible display of community support with about 75 adult volunteers, 220 students from South West Rocks Public School and 25 volunteers from the Clontarf Academy and Corrective Services all contributing to the build in some way.

Stage one of the upgrade, delivered with $250,000 of Council funding and community contributions, includes a double flying fox; nest swing; two slides; stepping logs; a traditional swing set and a large shaded deck. A number of plants and landscaping as well as upgrades to the surrounding footpaths and parking were also part of this stage.

Stage two will see more play equipment installed in 2017 thanks to funding generated from community fundraisers and donations from local businesses.

One example of the community’s involvement was by the Thorman family. South West Rocks resident Glen Thorman cut his family holiday short in order to complete the earthworks for the site.

His brother Ross, owner of Riverside Tavern, also helped with the earthworks and generously donated $2,500 towards the build while their cousin Dave built the decking with another local man, Graeme Allen.

Cr Campbell thanked everyone who helped Council staff meet the challenge of completing the upgrade in the short five-week timeframe.

“From individuals and groups to local students, this has been a huge community effort in bringing this all together,” Cr Campbell said.

“It is a fantastic achievement and a credit to the community’s hard work and willingness to work alongside Council to deliver the upgrade.”

Off to the nationals

PHYSICAL culture fosters friendship, fun and good health amongst girls.

The sport, which will celebrate its 125th birthday next year, has a strong presence on the Mid North Coast.

And eight young sport stars from Port City United Physical Culture Club will head off to Sydney to vie for a top place within their age groups, amongst participants from across Australia.

Teacher Kellie Mullan said recent years had seen a resurgence of interest in the mother and daughter sport.

“A lot of mums did physie when they were young and now their daughters are doing it.”

Many mums still participate and compete, Mrs Mullan said, in the sport which has girls from 4-years to women well into their 60s.

The combination of hip hop, jazz, ballet and gymnastics develops good posture, strength, fitness and core strength.

“It also helps with coordination and increases attention span because you need to remember dance routines,” Mrs Mullan said.

You are never too old to join physie, she added, with there being a beginner section for ladies.

The eight girls off to the nationals placed in the top five in the state from amongst hundreds of competitors.

It is quite an achievement, therefore, for two girls from the 6, 8, 9 and 11 age categories to attend the Junior National Finals in Sydney on November 27.

Competition is an aspect of physical culture but is not the focus of the sport.

Empowerment through the joy of dance and the power of belonging is its primary goal.

“The girls do not compete on their own,” Mrs Mullan said.

“They are all on stage doing the same routine

Nine-year-old Alex Beattie began physie at the age of four and loves practising her skills.

“I enjoy the dancing side of things and I really enjoy hanging out with my friends,” she said.

Each year Alex had got a little bit better and gained understanding of how her body moved, her mum Lisa Beattie said.

It consisted of race nine of the Spring Series in the morning, a BBQ lunch, and the third Club Championship race in the afternoon.

The morning race was sailed in a flukey westerly with a fast run-out tide, and the wind wasn’t much better for the start of the afternoon race, but towards the end of the first lap, the wind started coming in ever stronger gusts from the north-west, which just got stronger as the race progressed, allowing only half of the fleet to finish.

The ninth Spring Series race in the morning had six catamarans racing. Frank O’Rourke on Dino won on yardstick ahead of Grady McNee on Petrful, Tony Kuhn on Stella, Rob Barwick on Drift, Jack Corthals on Harpic, and Dave Winter on Spica. Petrful took the handicap win with Dino, Stella, Drift, Spica, and Harpic filling the minor placings.

The monohull’s morning race only had 2 starters. Young Elsa Gandy and Simon and Mia Fitzgerald in Voyager beat Simon and Dale Gandy, Josh Gleeson, and Noah in Big Bang on both yardstick and handicap.

Five catamarans started the afternoon’s Club Championship race. Dino won on both yardstick and handicap with Harpic a little way behind and Spica managing to continue to the finish to take third. Stella and Drift both pulled out when the gusty winds came in.

There were also five Monohull’s that started the afternoon race. Jeff Walsh and Gary King in Red Star came from behind to win on both yardstick and handicap ahead of the other finisher, Stuart Symons and Michael Jones in Big Bang.

Next Weekend is the first two rounds of the interclub series with Queens Lake Sailing Club and Great Lakes Sailing Club. The first round on Saturday is Queens Lakes’ ‘Queen of the Lake’ marathon starting at 1pm.

On the Sunday, the second round in Port Macquarie will be the ‘Ted Kuhn Cup’. The morning race starts at 11am, and the afternoon race starts at 1pm.

In division 2 the winner was Bev Hudson with 35 nett and runners-up all on 38 nett were Lynne Frances, Liz Lewis and Chris Parkes. In division 3 the winner was Ronda Laws with 35 nett and runnerup was Mavis Collins on 36 nett. NTP on 16th was Narelle Quinn and a gobbler was recorded

by Judy Bradley on the 17th.
