SEVEN ‘new’ Australians received some fun words of ‘advice’ from Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peta Pinson following their citizenship ceremony last week.

“You will now be expected to eat Vegemite on toast; to ‘slip slop slap’; and to cheer on our Aussie teams,” she jokingly told the seven residents who have settled in the region from Bulgaria, Canada, the Republic of Ireland and the UK. In a moving ceremony to officially welcome

the new residents as Australians, the mayor spoke of mateship, the strong bonds of our society and congratulated the seven on their decisions to become Australian.

“My hope for all our new citizens is that they enjoy the lifestyle and freedoms afforded to Australian citizens,” said the mayor.

“Many of us have been born into a nation that prides itself on looking after each other.

“We have strong society bonds, and they are never more apparent than in regional communities like ours in the Port Macquarie Hastings region.

Skate park in ‘wrong spot’

Why? Why knock down existing facilities to locate a skate park several kilometres away from development of new schools and houses which will attract families and kids? Sue East warns the limited space on the foreshore will not maximise the potential for the new skatepark to nurture Olympic potential.

A LAKE Cathie grandmother says she is all for having a new skate park in her suburb, but says the council has the location all wrong, being too far away from the youth who will use it, and going against State Environmental Planning Policy.

Sue East lives within walking distance from the Lake Cathie foreshore which is currently being considered as the best site for a new skate park but says a recent Port Macquarie Hastings Council think-tank for the master plan for the foreshore failed on numerous levels.

“It was not a meeting about a masterplan for the foreshore; it was a meeting about a skate park,” says Sue, adding the 20 people chosen to represent the various views were heavily weighted in favour of those who want a skate park on the foreshore.

“Of the 24 who attended, four were council staff, 13 were from the Lions Club and Skate Park committee and two, including myself, were from the Lake Cathie Progress Association.

“The odds were stacked against anything other than a skate park on the foreshore and that, in my opinion, is not the best place for what could, in the right location, be a very well-used facility and perhaps even breed some future Olympic champions given skateboarding is now an Olympic sport for inclusion in the 2020 Summer games in Tokyo.

“Figures show an increase in primary school aged children to be by 107 per cent and clearly the best place to site a skate park will be where the children live and where, in the next five years, various other sporting facilities will be built several kilometres south of the foreshore.

“I am all for the skate park and my 14 grandchildren would love it. But it needs to be in the correct location.

“There are 175 houses this side of the lake and about the same on the other. The new area several kilometres to the south is where the 107 per cent growth will be in the new residential area.

“Erosion on the foreshore is an issue and most people do not want the skate park on the foreshore.

“Council has carried out a ‘survey’ but I know that not everyone in the area received the letterbox drop.”

Sue said the proposed foreshore site also went against State Environmental Planning Policy – Coastal Protection which states: ‘not having a structure other than amenities 100 metres from a lake, estuary, creek or river’.

Lake Cathie is classified in the SEPP under coastal lakes.

“In fact, a precedent has already been set by the PMHC when they agreed with the community that the Rural Fire Station shouldn’t be built on the foreshore,” Sue said.

(It was later sited at the exit of the

Woolworths complex.)

Sue said she believed the mid-sized skate park would necessitate the knocking down of the existing toilet block and would be less than 100 metres from the lake.

“School buses park nearby; there would be inadequate parking and it is in proximity to a koala corridor,” she added.

“I believe the skate park should be located with all the other planned sporting facilities out near the school and new development which will see 4000 homes going up.

“If it is too far to drive to the Bonny Hills skate park, it will be equally too far to drive from

the new houses going up the foreshore to make use of a facility north of the village.

“The meeting was not about a masterplan for the foreshore. It was about a skate park in a totally inappropriate place.

“Once the next Olympics feature skateboarding as a sport, we can expect to see increased interest and there will be a demand for the best facility available.

“Young people will soon outgrow anything the council allows on the limited foreshore site which is perfect as it is with a playground and barbecues and plenty of open space for weekend visitors.

“Why wouldn’t they want to locate it south

where, within five years, there will be a new Catholic primary school and high school; soccer, rugby league and AFL fields as wells as netball and basketball courts?

“That would be the ideal place for a skate park.”

With a background in recruiting staff for the engineering and project management industry, Sue and husband Merv are casting a professional eye over the ‘masterplan’ for the foreshore.

“We have spent 35 years looking at the bigger picture,” says Sue. “On November 18, the council plans to have a family fun day on the foreshore to show the community what their plans are.

“I would implore the council to make their decisions for Lake Cathie based on the best interests for the whole of the area, not just one sporting group.

“I realise that the youth and their parents want this skate park, but let’s locate the park south.

“Make it bigger and better in a more appropriate location near other sporting facilities; convenient to where that 107 per cent growth in young people will be; close to new schools to be built four kilometres away.”

Opposed to high-rises I COULD not agree more with From the Heart (2-11-17). I decentralised my business to Port Macquarie the late 1970s and have witnessed all of the usual changes that take place in a growing environment - traffic lights. Macca’s and KFC etc, and the revamping of the waterfront and Town Green. Then the change to high-rise building heights, many of which have destroyed coastal views and scenery. Take, for example, the Rydge’s complex. How that happened is beyond reasonable thinking.

I am opposed to any more development in Port Macquarie on prime coastal Crown Land.

There must be many alternate considerations.

For one, it could be turned into a community

park, styled as a mini oasis/botanical setting. It should incorporate the Information Centre, a parking space for travelling caravans and tourists (as in most other towns), fresh new public toilets, an extension to the wharves to encourage small boating to pull in for a meal. There should also be a return of an appropriate seafood outlet and takeaway for waterfront dining and picnicking.

There must be no more high-rise or commercial buildings in this area of our town.

Parking still remains the major issue. Why can’t the hole in the ground next to Port Central be turned into a multi-park complex?

I HAVE been interested to hear about the recent “outing” of Harvey Weinstein about his alleged sexual harassment of female actors over a number of years.

This issue is nothing new. I am 74 years old and I was always sexual harassed from the moment I entered the workforce at 15.

The first instance was when I did work experience as a 15-year-old at a well-known department store at Crows Nest in Sydney.

An older man used to wait for me to enter the lift and then try to touch my breasts and make sexually explicit comments,. No-one intervened and I was too young to really understand what

was happening.The next experience was when I worked for one of the big three banks on the North Shore of Sydney. The accountant used to stand behind me, massaging my shoulders and peering down the front of my uniform. I was too scared to even think of reporting him. His actions made me wary of men in power.

In the 1960s I embraced the Women’s Movement and no man has ever harassed me since. I like men and some men are my dearest friends. I am astonished that this behavior is still being tolerated. What did we feminists fight for?

SO much for the light-hearted column I had planned! I just cannot hold my tongue.

I never thought I would witness the day our Federal Government would stoop so low!

I’m well aware of the dirty politics and wheeling and dealing that goes on behind the scenes, however there are three major issues currently on the political table that need to be dealt with properly. Once and for all. Now!!!

I’m not about to get into the SSM survey again other than, it’s simply the most divisive, discriminatory, disrespectful document dispatched! By the time you add the costs of the YES and NO marketing campaigns to the $120million the government are spending on the ‘non-binding postal survey’ we can safely guestimate about $150million conservatively has been ploughed into, essentially – not making a decision! Seriously!

What cost has the dual citizenship debacle come at? How much of taxpayers time and money has been wasted, because the (s)elected few have been caught out, which will probably continue to happen unless there is a full audit.

Now!!!

Rather than continuously throwing good money after bad, perhaps it is time the Australian people put their foot down! Maybe consider a complete overhaul of the constitution to reflect the fair and equitable society a majority of Australians want to live in today? Obviously, what worked 200 hundred years ago is clearly not working well today! Like it or not, it is time to recognise that we are a multicultural country and there would be very few of us who cannot get dual citizenship, somewhere. So let’s cut the crap and get on with it! Alternatively, all those that have dual citizenship or can get it should. Then we can collectively revoke our Australian Citizenship and the (s)elect few can try and toss us all out of the country?

The issue top of mind is the shameful situation on Manus Island. I cannot even begin to portray how sick this situation makes me feel. 600 men who have been incarcerated

for four-plus years, will more than likely die, because our Government will not bring them to Australia. Not only that but, our Prime Minister has refused assistance for 150 of the men to be taken in and resettled by NZ, due to some deal made with the USA, which I understand may not come off. Must be some serious money involved!

The treatment of refugees on Manus Island, will go down as one of the worst atrocities in Australian history and we the current citizens of Australia, will all have blood on our hands, because we stood by and watched it happen, rather than get off our couches, fight for what is right, push back and make our government work towards a solution.

If NZ took 150 men, we would have just 450 men to support, approximately, one man per 55,000 Australians – surely we can dig deep enough? I would happily have given the $5 the government invested on my behalf, to run the SSM postal survey, shit I’d donate another $45 to make it $50 if it meant it would save these men’s lives! Surely there are enough homes with room in Australia to take an extra person? For starters, how many spare rooms do Malcom and Lucy have between their palatial homes? This whole situation is just morally, ethically, politically and socially debilitating for our country – it is eating away the core of our social fabric, sickening our citizens to the stomach and tearing their hearts apart as we watch in horror!

I have a suggestion! Let’s do a deal. The citizens of Australia can do a clean swap. We’ll take all 600 refugees from Manus Island and put our Federal politicians in their place - no pension, no medical support, no travel, limos or security - for a minimum of four years!

Charity the icing on the cake

LIKE an oil painting, decorating a cake takes patience, creativity and practice and as each layer is applied the finished masterpiece reveals itself in all its lustrous glory.

For one member of the Kempsey branch of the Cake Decorators Guild of NSW, Liz Rutledge, cake decorating is a relaxing and enjoyable hobby.

“When you’re decorating a cake, you just forget about everything else,” she said.

Like the 17 other members of Kempsey’s Cake Decorators Guild, decorating cakes is Liz’s passion and in the months leading up to Christmas each year these artistic ladies put their considerable talents into raising funds for charity.

They buy Lion’s Club fruit cakes and decorate them with Christmas baubles or wild flowers, which are of course all edible, and then sell the finished product for $30.

Over the years they have raised funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and local charities that include the Macleay Valley Hospice, Riding for the Disabled and Parklands Cottage.

Each year in August this group opens its doors to the public for a day of cake decorating demonstrations.

The $25 fee also includes morning tea, lunch and raffles offering great prizes.

President of the guild, Judy Kesby, has been a member from the beginning 35 years ago.

She had been making and decorating cakes for about five years before that when a discussion with a few local ladies discovered a common interest and the Kempsey branch of the Cake Decorators Guild was born.

It’s the only branch on the Mid North Coast and one of 20 in NSW. Judy explained the time it takes to decorate a cake that must be done in stages so the icing

“It’s not so much the money you put into it but the time.”

First the cake has to be made then any holes plugged up before it can be covered in icing.

The icing then has to dry before decorations can be added.

These decorations are all edible and include beading, piping, roses and wild flowers, or

Christmas baubles, depending on the occasion.

“There are a lot of better cake decorators than me in our group,” said Judy.

“But it’s just enjoyable.”

For Judy the most satisfying part of cake decorating is the joy she gets out of seeing the job finished.

“I wouldn’t like a cake to go out of my house unless it was perfect,” she said.

The Cake Decorating Guild members also

make cakes for weddings, birthdays and other events.

Fellow member, Heather Clarke, joined 25 years ago when her children had all left home and she was looking for something to do.

Fate stepped in when she went to the local Adult Education group to do patchwork but it had closed, so she chose cake decorating instead.

She is currently decorating a cake for a grandson’s 18th birthday party.

“I’m not an expert and I’m still learning,” she said.

“I enjoy doing things for my family and have a mile of grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

“I just get joy out of doing things and giving things.”

The Cake Decorating Guild meets on the first Saturday of every month at 12.30pm in the Uniting Church Meeting Room on the corner of Wide and Tozer Street in West Kempsey.

The guild is always looking for new members.

“Cake decorating is a lovely skill to have,” Liz said.

“We don’t want it to be a dying art.”

Grants to help with improving land care

MID North Coast farmers, fishers, community and industry groups looking to help protect and improve their soil, vegetation and biodiversity can now apply for a grant from between $5000 to $100,000 to get the job done.

Applications for the competitive $50 million Smart Farms Small Grants opened on October 24 and will close on Thursday, December 7.

The grants, available through the National Landcare Program, are also aimed at assisting those groups to protect and improve their soil’s condition and support agricultural systems to adapt to change.

As the Smart Farms Small Grants is a new initiative there are no examples of what has gone before, only guidelines for the future.

According to those guidelines, grant applications should ‘support local on-ground projects that deliver the priority outcome of increasing the knowledge and capacity of farmers and fishers and facilitating the adoption of tools, technologies and improved land management practices to effectively, sustainably and productively manage Australia’s natural resources and adapt to significant changes in climate, weather and markets’.

Nationals Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, said farmers know the importance of protecting and caring for the land so they are able to pass on productive and healthy farms to future generations.

“Locals on the Mid North Coast value what the National Landcare Program has brought to the region since it started in 1989,” he said.

According to Mr Hartsuyker, numerous locals have taken the opportunity to get involved in Landcare over the years with more than 500 land carers in more than 80 local Landcare Groups across Cowper.

“Our farmers are enthusiastic land carers because the commercial viability and the longterm environmental sustainability of their farms depends on them caring for their land,” he said.

“I know that our farmers are innovators so the government is supporting that innovative thinking to help local farmers continue to farm smarter, not harder.”

Susannah Smith, Kempsey Shire Council’s Manager of Economic Sustainability, welcomed news of the Smart Farms Small Grants.

“I encourage all producers and members of the Macleay Valley Food Bowl to take advantage of this opportunity to compensate and reward the costs associated with responsible and sustainable farming practices,” she said.

The Macleay Valley Food Bowl is a Council initiative that it says supports farmers and producers of all sizes by providing resources to help them meet market demand, identify opportunities for growth and overcome challenges.

According to macleayvalleyfoodbowl.com. au, the region has a rich agricultural history and has been identified as an emerging hub for Australian certified organic produce.

The list of local producers is long and

varied, including growers of avocados, bananas, chillies, garlic, honey, blueberries, limes, beef, poultry and eggs.

The Smart Farms Small Grants are in addition to the National Landcare Program’s new Smart Farming Partnerships.

These partnerships are offering multi-year grants of between $250,000 and $4 million to put in place new and innovative sustainable land management practices, which protect and improve the condition of soils, vegetation and biodiversity.

Mr Hartsuyker called for groups of skilled organisations and individuals in the agriculture, fishing, aquaculture and farm forestry industries to apply for the Smart Farming Partnerships.

Among the seven new residents, taking the Oath, were Philip and Amanda Dewdney with their son Thomas, 11.

The family migrated from Essex under the old 457 work visa, but almost eight years later have taken out citizenship which will enable them to continue as foster parents.

Philip admitted that there could be some interesting times with The Ashes cricket series coming up, saying that now he was Australian, the best he could hope for would be ‘a draw’.

Pledging his new allegiance to Australia, Neil Hecimovic moved from Canada eight years ago and is now settled with his Australian wife Fiona and baby Thea.

“I love it here,” said Neil, adding that his family made loving Australia even easier.

All agreed that weather and relaxed lifestyle in the region had made the decision on where to live an easy one.

“It’s a beautiful part of the world,” Neil said.

And, of course, as with all good citizenship ceremonies, the event wrapped up with tea, scones and lamingtons.

Music/art festival

A RANGE of local and regional musicians will perform at a new one-day music and art festival in Kempsey on Saturday.

The Red Cedar Music and Art Festival, supported by Kempsey Shire Council, will be held at the Kempsey Showground.

The festival will feature 17 musicians and bands from the Macleay Valley as well as other parts of the Mid North Coast and a variety of food stalls. Acts on the line-up include: Audiotek, EZ3, manicSOUL, DJ Healey, James Leigh, Chicken Joe and the Mavericks, Dan Hopkins, Pam Hata, Two Shots Shy, Molly Irwin, Connecting Souls, Jack Titterington, Barrel Dawg, Nathan Douglas, Brendan Jenssen and Liam Moylan.

Artists will perform in the main hall of the Kempsey Showground from 1pm until late.

The festival is being organised by Macleay Entertainment. Owner and local musician, Liam Moylan, said he hopes the community will support the inaugural event.

And if they can’t resolve your concerns on the spot, it will be referred to the relevant area of Council to ensure you get a timely response.

REMEMBRANCE Day remains a powerful day of reflection in Port Macquarie.

Australians will come together on November 11 at 11am, the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War, for one minute of silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

“We have a Remembrance Day service every year in Port Macquarie,” said Greg Laird, Port Macquarie RSL sub-branch president.

“It is an important day and was celebrated world wide and it’s still important today, especially for the people of Port Macquarie.

They like us to hold the service and they come every year.”

Remembrance Day is coming up to its 100th anniversary next year and although times are different now, Mr Laird says that people, young and old, still hold the day close to their hearts.

“It’s gaining in significance, we are getting bigger and bigger crowds each year,” Mr Laird said.

“This year the service will be at the War Memorial at its new position so there will be a lot of people there. Remembrance Day is also used for remembering people who served in all wars now, not just the First World War; we pause for people who served in all wars.”

Mr Laird says young people are especially keen to be involved in the day.

“All the schools get really involved and the young ones participate by laying a wreath,” said Mr Laird. “On Saturday we have a guest speaker - Tanisha Palmer, from the Port Macquarie Campus. When you hear people like Tanisha speak you realise that young people are very involved with Remembrance Day and do still think of it and treat it as something very special.”

THE word nice was once a term of abuse.

That’s why people urged me and others like me not to use nice.

But I have to admit that nice is one of those words that is changing its meaning to something, well, nice. Has it completed the change?

Even as a child, I wondered why people urged me never to use nice. I had thought it was a good word.

But then I grew up. I still thought it was a good word.

Nice, according to John Ayto, went from meaning stupid to meaning pleasant.

Nice started life, in the English language, in the 13th century as a term of abuse. It came from the Latin word nescius, meaning ignorant or not knowing. Nescius was ‘ne’ meaning not and ‘scire’ meaning to know.

My big dictionary says the first use of nice in print was in 1290, but obviously it was in use before then.

Soon after, it came to mean over-refined, but not in a complimentary sense.

Shakespeare used nice, but so far as I can tell the word carried the earlier meaning.

In many cases the reader had to guess what the writer intended.

The first English dictionary, that Robert Cawdrey published in 1604, defined nice as

Depending on what you read, it meant lazy, dainty, reserved, loose-mannered, strange, effeminate, difficult to please and so many other things. So, if you said “he’s a nice man” what did you mean? Did you mean you liked him, or you considered him to be a dirty old man?

In fact, my big dictionary mentions this point. It says: “In many examples from the 16th and 17th centuries it is difficult to say in what particular sense the writer intended it to be taken”.

Furthermore, the Oxford dictionary rates nice as one of the words that have the strongest change in meaning.

My Macquarie dictionary conveys the “modern:” meaning of nice, such as pleasing, or agreeable. This came into fashion somewhere around the second half of the 18th century.

It goes on to refer to an exclamation, such as you ran into the back of the driving instructor’s car, resulting in the exclamation “nice one”. My American Webster says a person who is nice is also kind.

I think nice changed its meaning because some people, people who went with the flow, were considered shy and not willing to create trouble. The change in meaning has been very slow.

Eric Partridge in Usage and Abusage says nice is permissible in casual conversation, but “is to be avoided in serious writing”. He goes on and says nicely should, as a general rule, be avoided.

The late Stephen Murray-Smith quotes “she has a nice house” and gives by way of explanation “it’s alright for her, but I have somewhat higher standards”.

Murray-Smith says a nicety is not a pleasantry but a subtle point.

A joke about Hitler making a comeback said something like “but this time, no more Mr Nice Guy”.

Council delivers with grants

CHRISTMAS came early last week when Mayor Peta Pinson reached deep into the community grants ‘sack’ and delivered more than $100,000 to 24 not-for-profit organisations and community groups.

From a grant of $650 for the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre for their Christmas event, to several grants of $10,000, there were smiles all around. But none wider than the mayor’s as she reassured late comers, chatted to children and posed for photographers while delivering the envelopes in the first round of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s community grants program 2017/2018 which ended half an hour later with a group photo.

“The many local fundraisers, community events, Christmas celebrations and community hall maintenance programs would simply not happen without the dedication and support of our local community groups,” said Mayor Peta Pinson.

“Their contribution to building an inclusive, vibrant and connected local community is a real credit to them all, and the community grants program is a great opportunity for Council to thank and reward those that work tirelessly in making our community a better place to live.”

The mayor added later that giving out more than $100,000 to deserving groups had been a highlight of her day and was a fun part of her job.

Lisa McPherson accepted the cheque for the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce saying the $4500 would ensure the event in Bain Park would be another success with a crowd in excess of 2000 people expected to attend.

She said that while generous volunteers and ‘in kind’ donations took care of about $8000 of an estimated $15,000 cost to put on the Christmas event, the $4500 would pay for a

Time to focus on recycling

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC RECYLCING is a growing issue on the Mid North Coast and there’s no better time to start or refocus than on National Recycling Week (November 13-19).

Environmental group Planet Ark is winning the battle against waste and is encouraging all people, young and old, to get on board the recycling wagon.

“Since curbside recycling came in, recycling has really been embraced and Australians have really taken it on board,” said Carol Warwick, PR and media manager at Planet Ark. “However the missing piece of the puzzle is what actually happens to those materials once they’ve been recycled, and we talk about closing the recycling loop - we actually need to buy products that are made from recycled materials. Our theme this year is ‘What Goes Around: Why Buying Recycled Matters’.”

Once people have put plastic bottles and other recyclables in the recycling bin they are then sorted and processed by a plastics recycler and can actually be made into things such as outdoor furniture and of course, new plastic bottles.

“This prevents more plastic being made,” said Ms Warwick. “The idea is that you are using plastic that already exists to make new

plastic items rather than creating more.

“Most newspapers in Australia are made from recycled paper. They are examples of ‘closing the gap’.”

Planet Ark has asked people whether they purchase products made from recycled materials and the answer is ‘yes’.

“People are actually more inclined to purchase a product if it was made from recycled material according to our research,” Ms Warwick said. “The value of people wanting to recycle and the recycling message is high but the awareness of how many products are out there that are recycled is low. We do need to recycle, now more than ever, and to concentrate on what happens with those recycled items and to buy them back.”

Of course there is a price we must pay if we don’t recycle.

“We send an enormous amount of waste or perceived waste to landfill each year which

creates issues around the chemicals that can leak from the landfill from things such as batteries,” said Ms Warwick. “Landfill can create methane, a greenhouse gas with a global warming capacity 21 times more powerful than CO2.

“Maybe that’s a cultural shift that needs to take place so that we realise we can’t just keep throwing things away – there’s no ‘away’, it’s got to go somewhere, and unfortunately sometimes it does end up in our natural environment and that’s damaging for our wildlife and waterways.”

ANYONE concerned about fluoridation is invited to attend a meeting at 5pm Thursday, November 9, to hear guest speaker, chemist Dr Geoff Pain.

Dr Pain has been invited by Paul Jones, president of the local Citizens Against Fluoridation group, to address a meeting at The Westport Club, to discuss the potential risks posed by fluoride in Port Macquarie’s drinking water.

Despite 71 per cent of residents rejecting the proposal in 1991, the water was fluoridated in 2012.

“Most locals accept reassurances from their dentists, the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, and NSW and Federal health departments, that fluoride in water helps reduce tooth decay and is safe to drink,” said Mr Jones.

“Apart from conceding a causative link to dental fluorosis, which does not impair functionality, no proven, long-term harms are admitted.

“Dr Pain will demolish these claims and suggest how citizens can fight back.”

The pharmacist will address a meeting at The Westport Club in Buller Street, and admission is $10.

Scout fundraiser THE First Kempsey Scout Group is holding a Family Photo Shoot fundraiser on Saturday, November 11, at Kempsey’s scenic Riverside Park from 9am to 4pm.

Add your voice to strategy THE Port Macquarie-Hastings community is invited to consider and share views on Council’s new draft Urban Growth Management Strategy (UGMS) that provides a framework for urban development and growth in our region.

The aim of the draft strategy is to identify opportunities and areas for growth across the Port MacquarieHastings region, so that planning and investment by government and the private sector can be coordinated in those areas.

Mayor Peta Pinson said the UGMS is one of the most important documents Council will develop.

“It speaks to how we manage growth and what our future will look like. I’d like to encourage the community to consider the draft and come back to us with their views; we want to ensure we receive quality input,” said Mayor Pinson.

Council Director Jeffery Sharp supported the Mayor’s words noting the importance of having a strong plan for the future.

“We know that our region is, and will continue to be a high growth area. Our population is forecast to grow by around 1,200 people each year, and providing infrastructure, jobs, community facilities and investment opportunities in the

The draft strategy includes plans for the Health and Education Precinct around the Port Macquarie Base Hospital and an expanded business park around the Port Macquarie Airport. It also includes planning for the Wauchope CBD and a new light industrial area to serve the growing population in Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills.

THURSDAY golf at Port Macquarie was a two-ball best ball stableford in conjunction with a single stableford event.

Winners of the two-ball stableford event were Alex Kiss and Stephen Brown with a terrific score of 49 points on a c/b from runnersup Les Derby and Barry Tink. Kiss had 44 stableford points on his own.

Winner in A grade was Dale Hyde with a great score of 43 points.

Hyde had a birdie and eleven pars in his six over par round. Runner up was Dave Curran with 41 points.

Winner in B grade was Brian Somers with 40 points on a c/b from runner-up Brian Cheetham.

Winner in C grade was Dave Ritchie with 41 points on a c/b from John Heslin and Peter Hearle. Heslin took out the runners-up prize The winners of the scratch score were Gavin Roberts and Stefan Walker with a three-under-par round for 39 points on a c/b.

The ball competition went down to 36 points. NTP’s went to Gavin Bollard, Col Pickering, Mitch Van Der Veer and Ron Leeson.

A single stableford was held in three grades on Saturday. The A grade winner was David Bagust playing off 1 who amassed 40 stableford points representing a great score three-under-par. Runnerup was Peter Stephens who scored 39 points.

B Grade was won by Mitch Van Der Veer with a score of 39 points.

Heaps of fun at fundraiser Sand Mania is a day of action for all ages

Whether it’s running, walking, crawling, splashing, or jumping through obstacles, Sand Mania is for anyone and everyone.

“It’s unique to Port Macquarie, there’s nothing like Sand Mania,” said Rob Bruce, Vice President of event hosts, the Tacking Point Lions Club.

“It’s fun and it’s about family - a lot of families come from around Port Macquarie and the surrounding towns and it’s something they keep coming back to each year.”

There are three main events – the Sand Mania for anyone aged 12 and older, the Corporate Challenge for teams, and the Mini Mania for children aged 5-12.

“The event is not timed, it’s all about completing the 27 obstacles,” said Mr Bruce.

“It’s only 5km and a lot of people walk it, some people run it, and there’s every kind of obstacle from cargo rope climbs, an ice bin challenge, rock climbing on the beach, hurdles, monkey bars, and much more.

“Each competitor of the Mini Mania will take part in sand bag races and hopscotch and will receive a Sand Mania gold medal.”

Last year brought in 500 entrants who each contributed to the main goal – to have fun and to raise money.

“It’s a charity event run by the Tacking Point Lions Club to raise money for Headspace and Marine Rescue,” Mr Bruce said.

“It’s still got the competency of an ironman with a registration tent, a first aid tent, a place to put your gear, barbecues and many other

THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club had planned to hold the secod round of the sprint series on Sunday, but because the uncertain weather kept the fleet numbers down, and due to a discrepancy in the start time, it was decided to hold the ninth race of the spring series instead.

Tony Kuhn on Stella won the catamaran division on both yardstick and handicap despite damaging a rudder when launching the boat.

Scott Witchard on Hummer and Rob Barwick on Drift had a close duel that had the clubhouse

on their feet. Hummer finally edged ahead for second.

The small fleet of monohulls were sailing well, but when Terry Howard in Ratz retired as the gusts strengthened, Simon Gandy and Jane Cooper in Voyager sailed another half a lap before also decided to retire as there was no-one left in their class.

Next Sunday is a double-header with race 10 of the spring series at 11am and the third club championship at 2pm. Ron Apps is on duty.
