Anger grows over deal that offers city heart ...

By NIKALA SIM THE heart of our town is not for sale say our local government leaders.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor Peter Besseling and Councillors Mike Cusato and Rob Turner are adamant public land should stay public.

Their fury is over the Plaza car park on the corner of William and Short streets.

The State Government announced last week that rather than sell the land to our Local Government it prefers to sell the six hectare block to multinational company Woolworths.

“Quite simply, this is prime, waterfront real estate in a growing coastal centre that is currently in public hands,” Mr Besseling said.

“The entry to our CBD, with its waterfront views and foreshore access, deserves better treatment than the easy bureaucratic path of selling it to a large supermarket.”

The Council has been Trust Manager for the land since it was donated in the 1960s for the purpose of car parking.

Councillor Rob Turner is extremely concerned about what he sees as a fast-tracking of the process.

“On December 11, 2013 Council received a letter from Crown Lands about the in principle sale of the land to Woolworths and seeking our views,” Councillor Turner said.

“On that same day a letter was written by Crown Lands stating we had been consulted and had given our strong support.”

This resulted in two important State Government guidelines being waived – a land assessment and public interest test, he said.

Work for the Dole leads to full-time employment

By NIKALA SIM A NEW program for unemployed people has paid off for one young man.

Port Macquarie Landcare Group embraced volunteer Ian White when he was referred to them, six months ago, under the Work for the Dole trial.

The program, now officially in force, pairs unemployed people with not-for-profit organisations to transition into the workforce.

“I had been on and off unemployment benefits for three years,” the 22-year-old said.

“Working 25 hours a week with Landcare has improved my general feeling about myself and got me into the swing of being somewhere.”

The Bonny Hills man was advised to list this volunteer work on his resume prior to attending a job interview with Hastings Arbor, but forgot.

When he first went into the interview with Anthony Harris he thought he didn’t seem that keen.

“But once he found about Landcare his tone changed and he became really keen about putting me on as a trainee arborist,” Mr White said.

“I feel really excited – I haven’t done it before but I am willing to learn.”

Participants in the Work for the Dole program are able to choose the organisation they would like to donate their services to.

“The fact that Ian chose to volunteer with Landcare ticked all the boxes for me,” Mr Harris said.

“That and his down-to-earth and mature attitude.”

Port Macquarie Landcare Group President Estelle Gough said Work for the Dole was a great help – practically and financially.

The extra hands had helped put their Environmental Trust Project ahead of schedule and the government funds for each person would help pay for tools and equipment.

The Work for the Dole participant had fitted in well, been responsible and reliable, took direction and showed a willingness to learn, Mrs Gough said.

“Ian is a delightful young man and the fact that he can now put those skills into a new job is

fantastic,” she said.

The Hastings Arbor business began last December and Mr White will be its first employee aside from the owner.

“I would say to someone if you have the chance do Work for the Dole – get out of the house, see new faces have a bit of a laugh,” Mr White said.

RECENTLY, I attended a ceremonial sitting of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal to welcome the most significant reform to Commonwealth administrative law in 40 years; the amalgamation of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Social Security Appeals Tribunal and the Migration Review Tribunal Refugee Review Tribunal into a single body, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal will provide an accessible, efficient and informal process for review of government decisions.

The ceremonial sitting was attended by key figures in the history

of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, including the current President, the Honourable Justice Duncan Kerr Chev LH, Sir Gerard Brennan KBE QC and the Honourable Robert Ellicott QC. The amalgamation will strengthen the efficacy of Commonwealth merits review and promote high quality and consistent government decision making.

The amalgamated Tribunal promotes accessibility of review by simplifying the merits review system and providing a single point of contact for Tribunal users.

Key services of each of the

amalgamated tribunals will be retained, while allowing for greater sharing and utilisation of members’ specialist expertise.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the legislative establishment of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. The reforms that commenced today deliver the coherent merits review framework envisaged when the AAT was established in 1975.

The reform is also consistent with key recommendations of the 2012 Strategic Review of Small and Medium Agencies in the Attorney–General’s portfolio and

the 2014 National Commission of Audit Report, Towards Responsible Government.

Justice Kerr continues as President of the amalgamated Administrative Appeals Tribunal. I thank him for his leadership throughout the amalgamation process.

I WAS shocked and angry to hear that the Crown Lands department are trying to close down and demolish our fishermen’s co-op.

This was not something the people of Port Macquarie agreed to in the foreshore management plans.

I and the rest of Port Macquarie population demand our council and NSW MP Leslie Williams do all in

their power to stop what looks like another sneaky move by the Crown Lands department to do the dirty on the people of Port Macquarie, and all the devastated workers at our historic and iconic Hastings River Fishermen’s Co-operative.

THEY say laughter is the best medicine and the team at Your Local Independent love nothing better than to enjoy a good belly laugh with each other. If we didn’t laugh as much as we do, we would probably all end up in the foetal position, in a corner, rocking and crying!

Why? Because, ours is a job that works on tight deadlines, loads of adrenaline, hefty doses of stress and dealing with people. Don’t get me wrong, we love people and we love what we do, but, sometimes the deadlines, adrenaline, stress and people can send us over the edge!

There is a fine line between laughing or crying hysterically, so we choose to laugh and most importantly, we can all laugh at ourselves and some of the dumb things we do under the stress.

I spent most of Monday laughing at myself for turning up to an appointment with a brand new client 5 hours early … great first impression! Thankfully, said client thought it was as funny as I did and it was a great ice-breaker.

Needless to say I went back for the proper appointment and we were both still laughing.We all do dumb stuff that can keep us laughing for hours, days, weeks and even years.

More homes join NBN FEDERAL Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie is continuing his campaign to get the National Broadband Network (NBN) rolled out across the electorate and has welcomed the latest commitment to include thousands of more homes and businesses in the Hastings Manning and Gloucester areas as part of its 2016 works program.

“At the time of the last election, I was concerned to hear that many areas throughout my electorate would not be included in the roll out for at least 10 years. Since then, I have been working with Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to bring to the attention of NBN Co officials the need to expedite the rollout many areas across our electorate,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Malcolm Turnbull has been very effective in shaking up the whole NBN Co rollout process by insisting on a new approach that embraces a broader range of technology.”

Learning local life skills

By NIKALA SIM ABILITY is at the core of a great idea.

What-a-card is the initiative of an energetic bunch of people with a passion for photography.

The students, who are clients of disability service ACES, attend SkillsLink Training in Port Macquarie to learn life skills.

SkillsLink photography instructor Mike Kane has worked with the group for about five years.

The What-a-card project was designed to encourage the students, aged from 20 to 47, to participate in a small business idea from start to finish, Mr Kane said.

“We took them on a number of outings to take photographs and set up still shots in the studio,” he said.

“This really challenged their creativity because with each idea they had to set up the photograph themselves.”

It was exciting to learn about lighting and how to crop a photograph, Stephanie Gunn said.

“I love photography and I can’t stop thinking about it,” she said.

Once the group had taken all the photographs they were projected on to the white board and as a team they debated the merits of each one.

They then sat with Mr Kane and performed

edits whereby the images were printed.

“When it came to making the cards and bookmarks we had quite a production line with people trimming, pasting, laminating and adding the fringed trim,” Mr Kane said.

Images on the bookmarks and cards embody the spirit of Port Macquarie and include the iconic lighthouse, sand, sea shells and starfish.

The ten-week program was so much fun Josh Southgate urges others to give it a go. The final step in the What-a-card project is to sell their product at the cost of a donation, first of all at SkillsLink Training on Hastings River Drive, and then in outlets further afar.

Anger growing over carpark sale • From Page 1

THE community has come out the winner with nearly $40,000 of donations courtesy of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie.

Sailability, Endeavour Clubhouse, Hastings Education Fund, Riding for the Disabled, St Thomas’ Anglican Church soup kitchen and

the Koala Orchestra are just a few of the many groups to benefit.

The donations were announced at the dinner to acknowledge the work of outgoing president Debbie Loveday and celebrate the appointment of Phil Perry to the role.

Port Macquarie gynaecologist Ray Hodgson received financial support for his work in Nepal.

AN extra $3,937,752 will be made available to local road projects in the Hastings, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has announced.

Initially, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was to receive $7,486,241 in Federal funding under the Roads to Recovery programme from 2014 to 2018, however, Dr Gillespie has been advised by Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss that funding will now be boosted by nearly $4million in the Hastings and Camden Haven

over the next two years for local roads.

Dr Gillespie said the $11,423,993 allocation to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was part of an overall Roads to Recovery funding package totalling $33,468,470 in his electorate as a result of the passage through Federal Parliament of the fuel excise indexation legislation.

“This funding is also in addition to nearly $40million in Federal Financial Assistance Grants and other Federal programmes the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area will receive

for local infrastructure and services over the same period,” Dr Gillespie said.

“While it is not within my jurisdiction of responsibilities as the Federal Member, many locals have raised numerous local road priorities with me over the past couple of years including the need for upgrades to Lake Road, Hastings River Drive, Gordon Street, Ocean Drive as well as general maintenance of many other local roads right across the Hastings.”

Big boost for local roads

Councillor Cusato questions why these weren’t carried out when they are requirements of the Crown Lands Act 1989, except in very limited circumstances.

“I haven’t spoken to anybody that knows what the hell is going on,” he said.

“This needs to be explained and needs to be investigated.”

In May 2014 Woolworths showcased its plans to develop the site.

In January this year other interested parties were given 21 days to submit a plan for the multi-million-dollar site.

“The murky process has been a mess of poorly governed inevitability, lacking in transparency and treating community views with contempt,” Mayor Besseling said.

Anyone interested in this issue can attend the next general Council meeting at 5.30pm Wednesday July 15 at the offices on the corner of Burrawan and Lord streets in Port Macquarie.

A Department of Primary Industries (Crown Lands) spokesman said the State Government will now enter into direct negotiations to finalise terms for the purchase of the site.

“These negotiations will remain confidential as is normal practice in business negotiations,” he said.

Training places open

OXLEY MP, Melinda Pavey, says applications for 200,000 free vocational education and training places are now open under the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled fee-free scholarship program.

Melinda Pavey says this is one of the many actions the NSW Government is taking to address youth unemployment and create a productive local economy.

Gemma shows she is a cut above her peers

A GOLD medal winner has been given another exciting reward for excellence.

Hairdresser Gemma Edwards is on her way to London as part of the Big Brother Movement.

The Port Macquarie woman won the gold medal for hairdressing in the 2014 WorldSkills Australia National Competition, but when she turned 22 last November became ineligible to compete in the international competition.

“I was disappointed at first but then I was offered this other opportunity and became really excited,” Miss Edwards said.

WorldSkills have paid for her airfare to England where she will undertake seven weeks of work experience.

“It was hard to find salons that would take me for a short period of time but finally I found Brooks and Brooks in the centre of London and Reds Hair Co in Herefordshire.

“I love what I do – it is really

creative – hair is my canvas and I paint a portrait every other day.”

WorldSkills Australia volunteer Donna DeMaria is our country’s expert in hair.

The mentor and Port Macquarie resident joined Miss Edwards in her employer’s salon last week to help train silver medallist Hayley Parker for the 2015 WorldSkills Competition.

The 21-year-old from Victoria took full advantage of the advice given to her by Milans Hairdressing employee Miss Edwards.

She will take all she has learnt to the international competition in Brazil next month.

Both young women agreed the competition was an excellent opportunity to learn new skills.

The WorldSkills competition is held at regional, national and international levels and was a great opportunity for people of many trades to pit their skills against their Australian representative Hayley Parker, WorldSkills Australia expert Donna DeMaria and Port Macquarie’s gold peers, Mrs DeMaria said. medallist Gemma Edwards have trained together with the aim of winning another gold in hairdressing in Brazil.

Attack launched on cyberbulling IN a major move to combat cyberbullying, the Federal Government recently appointed leading online safety expert Alastair MacGibbon to the role of Children’s e-Safety Commissioner.

The latest research suggests that as many as 1 in 5 Australian children aged 8-17 are exposed to cyberbullying each year. The initiative will seek to address the issue through prevention and early intervention strategies.

The funding package sees $7.5 million allocated to assist schools to access accredited online safety programs. In addition, $2.4 million has been committed to establishing and

operating the Office of the Children’s e-Safety Commissioner, which will implement an official cyberbullying complaints scheme.

Under the cyberbullying complaints scheme, social media companies will remain the first port of call for families seeking to have offensive material taken down. If the material is not removed within 48 hours, the Office can then be contacted to lodge a formal complaint.

“I see this as a great opportunity to work productively with flagship social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo! and app-based services amongst others

for the benefit of Australian children,” said the Commissioner.

“The statistics around bullying continue to be frightening,” Ms Occelli said.

“Even more concerning is that Australia has been ranked No. 1 in the world for bullying on social networks.”

Carpark negotiation ‘a murky process’ THE decision by the NSW Government to continue exclusive negotiations with Woolworths over the sale of the plaza carpark site will come as little surprise to anyone who has an interest in the Port Macquarie CBD and our foreshore.

The murky process has been mess of poorly governed inevitability, lacking in transparency and treating community views with contempt.

The Government’s approach has included misrepresenting a trust in official documents and shutting down a community driven process that went on public exhibition twice.

The latter was only rectified after community outrage.

A tokenistic call for commercial interest in the site during a 3 week Christmas holiday period, has only served to highlight the opportunities that have significantly favoured Woolworths as the ultimate owner of this premier foreshore location.

So what is at stake here and why has the state government been so very keen to avoid any detailed public scrutiny of their dealings with Woolworths?

Quite simply, this is prime, waterfront real estate in a growing coastal centre that is currently in public hands. What cashed-up investor wouldn’t want to get their hands on this property, right at the entrance to the CBD, with thousands of tourists and locals passing by daily?

The only sticking point is that it is public land, donated to the community in the 1960s for the

purposes of car parking. The local Chamber of Commerce can clearly see the potential of the site for the future economic benefit of the CBD, arguing that a foreshore authority be created in partnership with local and state authorities to maximise the social and economic potential of our foreshore area. This has been rejected for a myopic, short term exclusive arrangement in favour of Woolworths at the expense of any longterm public benefit of the waterfront site.

The site is zoned for commercial use and there is arguably no commercial site within our local government area that has greater potential. This is highlighted by 21 firms recently expressing an interest to the state government to develop the site, despite the exclusive negotiations occurring with Woolworths. The entry to our CBD, with its waterfront views and foreshore access, deserves better treatment than the easy bureaucratic path of selling it to a large supermarket.

For those in government who proudly preside over this outcome, I hope the fly-buy points are worth it.

Sleeping at work may soon be the ‘norm’ SLEEPING on the job may become the norm for Australia’s million plus shiftworkers if research by RMIT sleep expert Dr Melinda Jackson gets the nod.

A registered psychologist who specialises in sleep disorders, Jackson said there is mounting evidence that a nap during a night shift can improve production and safety.

“There is mounting evidence that napping during a shift can improve alertness and help maintain performance in the early hours,’’ Jackson said.

“But critical to the beneficial effect of the nap is the length of the sleep and working out the best times to take a nap.’’

Jackson said evidence suggested that fatigue played a role in major disasters like the Chernobyl nuclear power plant meltdown in Ukraine, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger and the grounding of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker shortly after midnight on March 24, 1989.

“All of those tragic incidents occurred during the early hours of the morning when the controllers were working through a night shift,’’ Dr Jackson said.

Jackson’s on-going sleep research is likely to be paramount to shift workers world-wide.

It canvasses the consequences of sleep disturbance and shift work on cognition, mood and brain function. Jackson was part of a team of researchers whose work at the Washington State University revealed how sleep loss impacted on people making critical decisions in real-world situations.

There’s no chance of a backflip here my ONE word spoken in the hearing of a person close to me is sure to get a reaction.

The word? Backflip.

“Why can’t they say you changed your mind?” would be the immediate comment.

I heard the word a couple of times last week and I knew the reaction I would get.

I remember hearing a comment from somebody in the distant, or not so distant, past. It was along the lines that people in the media loved to hear somebody give a black and white answer, because that answer would be stored away in the bottom drawer until that politician had a change of mind. And then the word backflip would come out. It’s much better than saying the person changed his or her mind.

It can convey the impression of weakness, in the face of difficult polls.

It can also convey an impression of underhand dealings and therefore it has become a favourite word for some media outlets. I won’t say which ones, because some of my best friends are journalists.

But some politicians say a lot without saying anything. Maybe they have been caught by ‘backflip’ before.

Another favourite word for some journalists is ‘gotcha’.

Most dictionaries, those that mention the word at all, have only one meaning for backflip.

This is an acrobatic manoeuvre, sometimes apparently also known as a back tuck, a somi, or a salto. With this move, your body makes a 360 degree rotation, beginning in a standing position and landing in a standing position.

Some people have been known to use the word frontflip, which presumably means you go the other way.

But don’t ask me. I sometimes have trouble just standing up.

If you are in the United States you could hear the expression flip-flop, which goes back to 1890 and has a long history. In this context it doesn’t mean anything to do with shoes or thongs. In the United Kingdom you might hear the expression U-turn. Both have had good use in politics.

But we are concerned about backflip in Australian politics. Some overseas dictionaries say the word is used only in Australia and New Zealand.

In political circles, some people have received

new information. Others have looked at the polls.

Whatever, it means they have changed their minds.

I heard the other day use of the word antidisestablishmentarianism. When I was a 12-year-old in Cardiff I read in the Newcastle Morning Herald that a girl my own age had won a sum of money by spelling that word. I learnt how to spell it, but nobody offered me any money.

The word disestablishmentarianism has been used a few times to mean something like the withdrawal of support for the established church, especially the Anglican Church in 19th century England.

Some people who support antidisestablishmentarianism believe no country should have an ‘official’ religion.

Most of these people have adopted the word antidisestablishmentarianism.

Others say the word, barring a few medical and technical terms, is one of the longest words in the English language.

But I will be very upset if someone gets prizemoney for spelling antidisestablishmentarianism.

Diabetes NSW research, released to coincide with National Diabetes Week (July 12-18), maps diabetes danger zones of people living with diabetes throughout NSW. Of the 1.7 million Australians living with diabetes 385,000, or 23% of them, live in NSW. The annual mapping by Diabetes NSW highlights that diabetes has become entrenched in Western Sydney. This year’s research confirms the region as the state’s diabetes danger zone across all indicators, for all types of diabetes, both genders, and all ages and stages of the condition.

The Blacktown postcode tops the list for the most people with diabetes, with Auburn, Merrylands, Liverpool and Fairfield all making the top ten hot spot list this year.

Research conducted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) demonstrates that Australians underestimate their personal risk of developing diabetes and do not perceive diabetes as a serious condition.

“Diabetes is a serious, progressive and complex condition with serious complications.

There is no such thing as ‘mild’ diabetes. All types of diabetes are serious and can lead to complications if not well managed. Diabetes has a significant impact on quality of life and reduces life expectancy,” says Sturt Eastwood, Diabetes NSW CEO. Diabetes is fast becoming the most significant threat to human health and productivity.

Worldwide, an astonishing 382 million people are living with diabetes. Here in Australia, 1.7 million people are living with diabetes – that’s one in four, at a national cost of $14.6 billion.

“By 2017 we expect diabetes will overtake heart disease as the leading cause of disease burden in Australia. The important message to remember is it doesn’t have to reach this level if we work together to tackle the challenge of diabetes,” says Mr Eastwood.

“We urge Australians to visit their local GP for a check up or call our Diabetes NSW toll free information line on 1300 136 588. There is a wealth of positive support and education materials and a community of people living active lives and managing their diabetes, ready to connect with you.”

National Diabetes Week July 12-18 Loving your feet is key to better health LOVE your feet.

If you have diabetes, neglecting your feet is a big mistake according to Port Macquarie podiatrist Sandy Gugenberger.

“You must love your feet if you have diabetes. As a podiatrist I am obviously passionate about foot health, but especially for patients who have chronic illnesses like diabetes where lack of circulation in the feet is a common result,” she said.

“If you can’t feel your feet, small cuts and abrasions can quickly become major issues, turn ulcerous and get infected. By ignoring or not being aware of these issues the situation can get worse, turning to gangrene and ultimately amputation.”

Sandy advises that the best way to keep feet healthy is to get a regular check-up from a foot professional, a podiatrist.

“A podiatrist can test the circulation in your feet and monitor changes as well as look for cuts and abrasions that the patient may not be able to feel or see,” she said.

Apart from regularly seeing a podiatrist, checking your own feet is also important and if you cannot reach or see them, get a friend or partner to help. Keep your feet clean and be sure to dry properly between the toes. Do not walk around in bare feet and wear footwear that will protect your feet.

Novaskill was ticket to success A GOOD education is everything.

This is the motivation for three local people involved in a story of success.

Young Ethan Morris completed his high school certificate and with high hopes entered the workforce.

The then teenager got a job mowing lawns, but was launched into unemployment when his employer closed the business.

“I couldn’t find work for about six months and then my girlfriend gave me a push in the right direction and things started looking up,” Ethan said.

That push was to register with a government employment agency who offered him the opportunity of further education.

He walked through the door that had opened and has never looked back, he said.

“I was interested in becoming a mechanic but when I was offered the chance to study warehousing operations with Novaskill I thought I would take anything I could get to get back on my feet – I am really glad I did.”

Training specialists Novaskill taught Ethan everything he needed to know to gain competency in Certificate III Warehousing Operations.

They also offered the bonus of a forklift ticket which was a real plus, Ethan said.

Half way through the class-based course Novaskill organised work experience placements to gain industry experience, Branch Manager Therese Jones said.

“We approached locally owned and operated Fastplast Building Supplies and they agreed to give Ethan one week of work experience,” Therese said.

Ethan was eager for more and turned up at the

“We put him straight on the books after that first week because he showed initiative, had a great work ethic, a sound knowledge of the industry, work safety issues and all the skills we needed,” Fastplast Manager Shaun Abbott said.

The Novaskill trainer was patient, presented information in an easily digestible manner and worked hard to make sure all students were at a similar level, Ethan said.

“If you are struggling to find work I say look at getting a certificate,” Ethan said.

“Put your head down because you are not go-

ing to fail you just need to do the best you can until you become competent.”

AMERICAN social researcher and Harvard University Professor Robert Putnam released two landmark books at the turn of the century, describing how America had changed its patterns of community life over the previous decades.

In 2000 his book ‘Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community’ created a controversy over ‘civic collapse’ across the land of the free. It makes interesting reading considering how Australia’s social interaction is going right now, especially when we are renowned for lagging behind trends in the States by about 10-20 years.

Citing evidence from half a million interviews over a 25 year period, Putnam showed how Americans as a whole had become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbours and their own democratic structures.

People had stopped doing what they used to do – going to civic meetings, joining clubs and competition leagues like ten pin bowling, mixing with neighbours in their own street.

Three years later he produced another report in a book called ‘Better Together: Restoring the American Community’ (2003). This time he had promoted people reconnecting with each other, and many did, probably motivated by the hard times that swept through many communities, plus the shock of 9/11, making them seek out friends and neighbours. Things had turned around.

We encourage all citizens in the region to come in and join shared voluntary activities that can rebuild connection and often lead to new enterprises springing up.

KENDALL PhiloMusica presents the second of their concerts featuring ‘Sonatas for piano and violin’ by Ludwig van Beethoven.

These milestones of virtuosic chamber music will be performed by pianist Jeanell Carrigan and violinist Goetz Richter at 2pm, Sunday July 19 at the Kendall School of Arts.

There is a one-hour pre-concert talk by Richter, also a philosopher, at 11.30am, followed by lunch and then concert at 2pm.

The pre-concert talk discusses ‘The figure of the mad musician is prevalent within romanticism, already present in classical mythology and certainly central to modernity. Is music perhaps essentially an art of madness? Does it lead to (or advance) madness?’

The pre-concert talk will look at examples in which literature engages with this topic including Diderot’s 18th century book Rameau’s Nephew, Tolstoy’s Kreutzer-Sonata and Mann’s Dr. Faustus before asking how these works might enlighten us in listening to Beethoven.

BOOKENDS @ Kendall is holding a huge second-hand book sale on Saturday, July 11, at the Kendall Hall. Doors open at 9am.

“Book lovers will have the opportunity to fill an entire shopping bag for $5 from a wide range of books,” the coordinator, Michelle Lopert said.

“Bargain hunters will have a field day filling their bags, and this year we have a big selection.

“Since bargain-hunting is exhausting, we’ll be serving cappuccinos and homemade snacks at the Kendall Meeting Place. We have a barista on hand.

“If you haven’t visited the Bookends store, you don’t know what you’re missing. We’re right next door to the Kendall Hall, higher up the hill.

It was once the old Batar School.

“The quaint little bookstore was established in 2007 with a few boxes of donated books and a couple of tables. Then it received a total make-

over with an Op Shop grant. It’s now a thriving bookshop, and book exchange, plus we have a monthly book club. “Bookends is a Community venture that is run entirely by volunteers and relies on book donations,” Ms Lopert added.

Broncos tip in ‘big’ game NRL WRAP CASEY O’CONNOR WITH the focus on Origin Three and much talk around Robbie Farah’s or whether Michael Ennis would fill the Blue’s hooking role, there were only four games in Round 17.

Out of those games has come some interesting results. We have seen teams return to form and others struggle due to injury and Origin and we have learned a little more about each of the teams. The Cowboys who have a well earned bye this weekend banished any doubts of their ability to make it to the grand final with a gutsy win over the Dragons.

The Sea Eagles finally dragged themselves off the bottom of the cage to get their season moving in the right direction but despite the win over the Sharks I remain unconvinced they will be an influence at the end of the season. The Panthers still have some impressive talent in the casualty ward but had enough firepower to impress on Friday night and you get the sense we can expect them to surge in a similar manner to 2014. If you are a Panthers fan the back end of the season is sure to be an exciting one. The Bunnies on the other hand look to be a shadow of the side that took all before them last season. They have a week off in Round 18 but need to do a lot of work when GI returns to regain their momentum.

On Monday night the Eels slipped past the Tigers after a sensational performance from Semi Radradra. He became the first player in 60 years to score multiple tries in five consecutive games.

The win shoots the Eels off the bottom of the ladder

and up to 12th while the Tigers take up the cellar dwellers spot.

And on to round 18 – we are truly into the business end of the season and trying to predict the outcome of games this weekend is once again fraught with difficulties. Until after the ‘Decider’ on Wednesday night we will not know whether coaches will choose to rest or play their Origin players. With the build up to Origin and the high stakes I am predicting there will be some players knocking on the Judiciary door post game.

On Friday night we head to Canberra in what are predicted to be very cold and possibly wet conditions. Just perfect for a game of football. The Raiders received a reality check at their last outing in New Zealand but having enjoyed the bye last weekend are well placed to add another win here against the Knights. After their promising season start the Knights now find themselves in a battle at the bottom of the ladder. The Panthers win over the Bunnies was impressive and they return to Pepper Stadium again on Saturday night to host the Roosters. The Roosters are on a roll unbeaten since round 13 and will be fighting to hold on to third spot on the ladder. If the tri-colours are genuine favourites for the 2015 premiership they need to win the tough games and this will be one of them.

The game of the round looks to be the clash of the Bulldogs and Broncos on Saturday night at ANZ. Here are another two teams who face off for the first time in 2015. Looking at the stats the Broncos have performed the better in the past when these sides meet. The Broncos are riding high at the top of the table leading the field with 26 points. They are there because they have grafted out some tough wins this season and face another here against the big Bulldog pack. The Doggies made a triumphant return to their spiritual home Belmore in round 16 where they

had a big win over the Storm. They are a big unit but will need more than size and emotion to beat the Broncos. Watch for ins and outs later in the week before making your tipping selections but on paper I will stick with the Broncos who continue to impress.

The Warriors host Melbourne on Sunday at Mt smart Stadium where the teams will play for the Michael Moore Trophy. The Warriors have again been the unpredictable side in 2015 but have done enough to be just inside the eight and menacing.

Melbourne has been out of sorts since thrashing Penrith in round 13. I am leaning towards the Warriors.

The Sharks and Dragons go head to head at Remondis on Sunday afternoon. Cronulla will be hoping to avenge the 42-6 shellacking they copped from the Dragoons in Round 12. While the Sharks have been playing reasonably good football and sit on the fringe of the top eight they need more consistency if they are to make the cut this season.

I think the Dragons can return to the winner’s circle here.

In the final game of the round the Titans host Manly at Cbus stadium on Monday night. It will be interesting to see what crowd numbers a Monday night game pulls on the Coast and what the reception will be like for gold medal back flipper Daley Cherry Evans. Manly bounced back to form momentarily last Sunday at Brookvale and have hit a high point in their season reaching number 14 on the ladder. It is likely the Titans will welcome back some troops from the casualty ward this week but the court proceedings that have embroiled some Titian’s players comes up for mention again later this week and you have to wonder of that will be a distraction.

If Manly can reproduce the form they showed at Brookvale I think they will win.

Young footballers represent with pride

By SCOTT HENDERSON TWENTY-FOUR ambitious young footballers representing the Birpai Nation made the trip to Raymond Terrace last week for the annual PCYC Nations of Origin Rugby League 7s tournament.

Now in its third year, Nations of Origin provides a golden opportunity to foster friendship and teach Indigenous and nonIndigenous youth about resilience, teamwork and reconciliation through sport.

The two-day event was lauded as a huge success this year, attracting over 750 players from 64 teams. Over the course of the tournament, 160 action-packed games were played.

Coach Jayson Corr was proud to report that this year’s boys’ and girls’ teams did an outstanding job representing themselves, their culture, and the Birpai Nation.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams performed well in the tournament, achieving respectable results in games that often went down to the wire.

“Our boys got two wins in their pool, and our main competitor also got two wins. In the decider, we were up by six points and the other team scored and converted on full time to make it a draw, however they had the better for and against, and went through to the finals,” Mr Corr explained.

The boys’ team reached the second tier of the finals, finishing 12th out of 32 teams. The girls’ team put in a dedicated effort to place 18th out of 32 teams. While the coach was quick to credit all players for working well as a unit, there were a number of standout performances by players in both teams.

“For the girls, we gave Player of the Day to Ocean Cole and Zoe Blair. For the boys, Damian Osbourne and Cooper McCallum were selected,” Mr Corr said.

“When it came time to train and play, everybody showed great responsibility.”

THE Young Sports Star of the Week is Surf Life Saving talent Hunter Leishman.

The 15-year-old is currently studying in Year 10 at Mackillop College, and has shown great potential in Surf Life Saving since first starting in the alpine conditions of Tasmania in the Under 8s division.

“I first became involved in the sport to make friends and enjoy the beach. My family moved around a bit, so it was a good way to meet people and get involved in the community,” Hunter explained.

Hunter has achieved outstanding results in a number of events, including the NSW State Finals and Country Titles for Surf Life Saving.

“Last season, I got a bronze medal in the swim event at the Country Titles, as well as a bronze in the board relay, and in the cameron relay,” Hunter said.

Hunter also finished 3rd in his division in the Lennox Enduro and 4th at the Hugo Smyth Memorial Classic in Coffs Harbour.

Hunter’s journey in surf lifesaving is inspirational, and a prime example of what it means to be a true ‘Ironman’.

After fracturing his neck and compressing several vertebrae during a training exercise at Lighthouse Beach in October, 2013, Hunter knows more than most about what it means to show grit and determination.

Young Sports Star of the Week Hunter Leishman is making waves in surf lifesaving “It happened down in a corner of the beach. I dove in and it sucked out really shallow – I just hit the bank,” he said.

The Port Macquarie youngster endured a long and challenging road to recovery, spending almost 6 months in a full neck brace.

While this would be enough to stop most people, Hunter used his experience and tenacity to reach new heights, earning a string of accolades as a star performer at the Tacking Point Surf Lifesaving Club (TPSLSC).

In a first for the sport of surf lifesaving, Hunter was recently awarded the North Coast Academy of Sport Chairman’s Award 2014/15, recognising the level of excellence he has achieved in the sport.

Looking to the future, Hunter has his sights set on continuing his run of great results.

Hunter uses a strict training regimen to focus on reaching his goals.

“Training is mostly swim-based, with running, board, surf ski, and also core sessions mixed in - I usually train 12-13 sessions over six days each week,” Hunter explained.

In addition to local branch championships and club days, Hunter hopes to challenge himself in a number of elite competitions this year and into 2016.

“I will be involved in a team for the Coolangatta Gold, with a few of the guys I train with, so I will be doing the ski leg in the team later this year,” Hunter said.

“I am also aiming for the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in April of next year, which will be held in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.”
