THE Fab Four are coming to Port Macquarie next week.

Well, not really, but we’ll be in for the biggest line-up of all things Beatles the Hastings has probably ever seen.

The annual Port Macquarie Beatles Festival is on from Thursday, February 12 to Sunday, February 15, and promoter Janette Hyde said there is a long list of exciting activities planned.

“It is shaping up to be a fantastic festival - all we need is the sun,” she said.

“There are so many diverse activities that there really is something for everyone, from music to classic cars and obstacle races and everything in between.”

The fun kicks off with a mystery night at the Wauchope RSL next Thursday, followed by a dance party with tribute band The Beatnix at Port Panthers on Friday.

Saturday it clicks into overdrive, starting with a Valentine’s Day champagne breakfast at Rose’s Vineyard in Lake Innes and then live entertainment on the Glasshouse forecourt from 10am-12 noon.

Plaza proposal D-Day

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council was due to hold an extraordinary council meeting yesterday evening as the Independent went to press.

Mayor Peter Besseling called the meeting to discuss an expression-of-interest submission for the Plaza car-park site in Short Street, Port Macquarie.

An expressions-of-interest process was opened for the site by the NSW government in January and submissions must be finalised and submitted by tomorrow, Friday, February 6.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss council’s intention to submit an expression of interest to redevelop the site for the benefit of the community, retaining the site for community ownership and using funds generated from any development for future improvements and maintenance along the foreshore.

“Council’s intent is to keep the foreshore in public hands,” Mayor Besseling said.

“Any redevelopment of the site would focus on increasing and improving car-parking spaces and pedestrian activation with open space while providing for commercial activity to generate income for foreshore improvements.”

In June 2014, council undertook community engagement with a reach of more than 4000 community members, to hear how the community would like to see the site improved.

Car-parking along with access and amenities, sight lines and vistas and environment and heritage were featured strongly in responses as important aspects to retain with the site.

Cheque this out - $693,000 boost THE attractions of the Mid North Coast and North Coast will be spruiked as never before this year thanks to a $693,000 state government grant.

The money – from the Regional Visitor Economy Fund - will be used by the North Coast Destination Network to promote the Legendary Pacific Coast, which includes the Hastings.

Minister for Regional Tourism John Barilaro and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams announced the funding boost on Friday, appropriately on the waterfront in Port Macquarie on a stunning day.

Mr Barilaro said regional tourism was a vital contributor to the state’s economy.

“Regional NSW receives 50.4 million international and domestic overnight and day trip visitors who spent $13.3 billion last year,” he said.

“The Legendary Pacific Coast is one of Australia’s iconic journeys that will benefit from the NSW Government’s Regional Visitor Economy Fund (RVEF) to drive visitation to this region and support economic growth in our regional communities.

“Of the total funding, $413,000 will be dedicated to a co-operative domestic marketing campaign with five key destinations - Ballina, Coffs Coast, Port Macquarie, Tweed Heads and Lismore, which aims to increase overnight visitor expenditure through the mid-year school holidays.

“A further $227,500 will contribute to an international marketing program to drive sales of North Coast tourism products in the markets of Singapore, United Kingdom, Germany, the US and New Zealand.”

PLAYERS from the Wests Tigers rugby league team roared into the Hastings earlier this week to promote their sport at local schools.

The visit was part of the 15th annual Community Carnival, which sees players from every club visit local and regional communities across Australia and New Zealand throughout February.

Players who made the trek to the Mid North Coast included James Tedesco, David Nofoaluma, Curtis Sironen, Tim Moltzen and Keith Galloway.

New college to target academic excellence

SUPPORTING students to achieve academic excellence will be the guiding principle of Hastings Secondary College, which opened last week.

Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams congratulated the staff and community members who have worked to form the college from the former Port Macquarie and Westport High Schools.

“The new college will raise the expectation

of excellence among students and the community,” Mr Piccoli said.

“The college will enable the two campuses to work very closely together to create a highly supportive learning environment where students will be able to focus on a wider range of curriculum offerings, including VET opportunities.”

Mrs Williams said planning for the college had already brought strong parental and community input, and that would continue as it

established itself at the heart of the community.

“The connection between the college and its community will be the foundation of its values - to be an inspiring and nurturing place where all students can succeed,” she said.

The new college will have a central role in integrating more closely the operation of six local public schools - Port Macquarie, Westport, Hastings, Tacking Point, Telegraph Point and the new Lake Cathie Public School.

Staff and community members have

been working on a number of areas of closer collaboration between the two campuses, and the expansion of gifted and talented programs, creative and performing arts, and sports opportunities will be an early focus for the college.

The college is opening with approximately 1300 students across the two campuses, with capacity for up to approximately 1600 in existing facilities.

IT seems the ‘free camping’ issue in Port Macquarie has gained national significance. The problems of Port Macquarie were highlighted in graphic detail with Shelly Beach depicted in a way that would have had our iconic ‘Harry’ turning in his grave in national newspapers. Rubbish, knives, used condoms, used syringes, sanitary products all soiling our recreational areas and untold environmental damage being done. Without proper facilities and enforcement by council it’s all quite inevitable.

In response to our recent piece, the mayor writes about council’s resolve not to permit illegal camping in our parks and reserves. Unfortunately his words seem hollow in the face of the reality that not a single infringement has been issued in over six months for illegal camping because council rangers have been asked to hand out brochures instead.

NSW legislation regulates caravan parks and camping grounds, even primitive camping grounds. Council have so far in our opinion refused to exercise their full authority to prevent illegal camping. Does this mean they themselves are operating illegal camping grounds, as in grounds that do not comply with sanitation, drainage, population density, environmental and fire hazard regulations that apply to even primitive camping grounds and

our local commercial operators?

We politely asked council to allow us to brief them at a meeting on February 4 concerning further development of what they call ‘free camping’. They refused. It seems – at least from what we have seen council’s deaf and blind to an issue that’s raising eyebrows all over Australia, an issue that threatens our tourist economy, our natural environment and our community.

Sustainable makes sense

I WISH to reply to comments by Cr Adam Roberts in the Inside Council column in the Independent (January 22) that council is over-resourcing ‘green’ initiatives such as a gas capture program at Cairncross and other climate-change strategies. While the gas capture program may be expensive to set up, as businessmen say - you have to spend money to make money - and this program makes money in the long run by reducing energy costs. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, mostly methane which is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping the extra heat the planet is now receiving. Cr Roberts says “I personally don’t believe local government should be conducting their own climate-change strategies in isolation from any state or federal government directive or policy”.

Fair enough – so why not start barracking for effective subsidies and policies from state and federal governments.

The federal government in particular has its head in the sand when it comes to the challenges of the 21st century.

All levels of government can play a part in changing to sustainable energy systems.

are aiming to be grid-neutral, i.e. putting as much into the electricity grid as they take out. The power is mainly coming from photovoltaic cells, with some hydro. Smart electrical engineers are developing sophisticated switching to kick in the grid when clouds block the sunlight. (Note that it is smart to maintain the grid because this is the most efficient use of resources. Some people in this DIY world of power generation may be tempted to leave the grid but, if so, they’ll need to spend up big on storage or be prepared for blackouts. Staying with the grid makes sense.)

Meanwhile Lismore and Bellingen councils are spending money creating new systems and when the systems are up and running their electricity costs, and that of the community, will be minimal. The 100KW photovoltaic cells on Port Macquarie library save council $30,000 per year. Thinking and acting for a sustainable future makes sense on all levels.

Elections ‘critical,’ RAN says

Protest a fizzer, but sparks flying

A PROTEST designed to highlight the high cost of fuel in the Hastings last Thursday was a fizzer – but the man who started the Port Macquarie fuel watch official facebook page is unperturbed.

Steve Davis said while the protest was mentioned on his site, it was organised by contributors to the page and did not have his official backing.

“I don’t have a problem with people protesting, but I just don’t want them to utilise this page. For this page to work, it needs to remain focussed on information on fuel prices – not side-tracked with people posting other stuff,” he said. “If they want to do that,

they should start another page.”

Mr Davis said apart from the offtopic posts and the ‘focus’ issue, the facebook page was going really well.

“Numbers are building strongly and approaching 3000, which is a great response, although we have a long-term goal of 5000.

“We need that critical mass. We also need people to support it by posting pictures of service station price boards and then supporting the stations offering the cheapest prices and letting them know you have checked prices,” he said.

Mr Davis said the average price of unleaded had dropped from $1.30 to $1.25 since the campaign started, but it was impossible to know whether

that was because of the campaign or because of the end of the holiday season and a drop in the wholesale price of oil.

“Regardless, it is still more expensive than surrounding areas,” he said.

Only a handful of protesters attended the protest outside the Shell service station in Port Macquarie last Thursday.

Police also moved on those that did turn out because organisers had not lodged an application form with police.

Organiser John Starr said he would fill out the necessary ‘form one’ and regroup.

THE Residents Action Network (RAN) is warning that upcoming state and federal elections are the most critical ever and it is therefore more important than ever for voters to have access to candidates, to reassure themselves about policies and intentions.

RAN is holding an access afternoon for all candidates for the Port Macquarie seat, at Westport Bowling Club, from 2 pm to 4pm on Saturday, March 21 - one week before the state election on March 28. At this stage known candidates who will be invited are sitting Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams, Greens candidate Drusi Megget and Labor candidate Kristy Quill. Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling is still declining to confirm whether or not he will run.

RAN president John Tingle said RAN was staging the access afternoon because it wanted everyone to have the opportunity to hear from the candidates and then ask direct questions and get straight answers.

“This is very important for the future of our whole area,” he said.

Mr Tingle says RAN is gearing itself up for a determined look at the policies and qualities of all candidates in both the state and federal elections.

“RAN believes politics in Australia have recently become so volatile that voters should demand a great deal of information and reassurance about candidates before they decide how to vote,” he said.

“There is a level of confusion and a lack of credibility affecting both sides of the political fence which is unprecedented in my experience.”

Mr Tingle, who was a current affairs journalist for more than 40 years and member of the NSW Parliament for more than11 years, says the profusion of scandals and the erratic behaviour of some sections of government was of concern to everybody.

“We have seen, amongst other things, a plethora of brazenly broken electoral promises by successive governments, and we are entitled to ask how much we can trust politicians’ promises,” he said.

THE National Stroke Foundation is calling on Port Macquarie residents and visitors to spare a few minutes to take advantage of a free, quick and easy health check.

Amcal Settlement City is offering free blood pressure checks and health assessments as part of the pharmacy health check: Know your numbers program to help identify people who may be at risk of stroke, heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

Amcal Settlement City pharacist Eddie Candotti said the start of the new year was a great time for Port Macquarie residents and visitors to take control of their health and learn how they can reduce their risk of stroke.

“We know the indulgence and heightened stress of the Christmas holidays can have a real impact on people’s health, and can sometimes cause a dangerous spike in blood pressure,” Mr Candotti said.

“Many Australians do not know that blood pressure is a key indicator to their stroke risk, along with other factors such as age, gender, lifestyle and a family history of stroke.

“Last year, it is estimated local residents suffered more than 470 strokes. This year it is

vital we reduce that number by helping people become more aware of their stroke risk and what they can do to lower it.

“If you know your numbers, you may be able to make small, simple changes to your lifestyle to reduce the likelihood of stroke.”

National Stroke Foundation New South Wales Executive Officer Greg Cantwell echoed Mr Candotti’s comments, saying everyone should know their blood pressure.

“Shockingly, there are more than 29,000 people in the electorate of Lyne living with high blood pressure, many of whom would be unaware of their high risk of stroke,’’ Mr Cantwell said.

“Know your numbers health checks only take five minutes, they are simple, noninvasive and they could save your life.”

Climate action heating up THE Hastings branch of Climate Change Australia hit the ground running in 2015 with a networking event at Lighthouse Beach last Saturday and a divestment day of action planned for next Friday.

President Harry Creamer said the group planned on being very active in the run-up to the NSW state election on March 28, campaigning for action on climate change.

“Issues include the continued lack of clear guidelines for new wind farm developments, no effective policies for reducing carbon pollution and only weak support for the renewable energy target,” he said.

The day of action planned for Friday, February 13 is part of a national day/weekend of action.

“We will be handing out leaflets, informing people of how the big banks lend money to coal miners to produce more dangerous pollution, and even suggesting people close their accounts,” Mr Creamer said.

The Hastings branch of CCA has been going since 2007 and now has 130 members.

“It is the only climate and energy security

lobbying MPs and making submissions.”

Mr Creamer has been particularly busy himself, including driving to Melbourne to meet well-known commentator on climate science and author of Climate Code Red David Spratt.

“David told me two things we need to know as the world grapples with the aim of holding emissions at a so-called ‘safe’ level of 2°C,” Mr Creamer said.

“Today’s level of CO2 and greenhouse gases is sufficient to produce 2°C of warming within two to three decades, and all emissions from now are effectively driving the warming above 2°C. “I also met some of the survivors of the 2009 Victorian bushfires as part of a project I am undertaking to tell real stories of real people who have been affected by extreme weather events, typical of what we can expect more of as global warming continues.”

This redevelopment would focus on increasing and improving car-parking spaces, pedestrian activation of the site with open space, while providing for commercial activity to generate income for foreshore improvements.

Community must speak up over car-park issue ON July 25, 1969 the NSW government reserved the Port Macquarie Short Street parking area from sale, for the purposes of public parking.

The land was donated to the community for this purpose and currently includes 258 public carparking spaces.

In late 2013, the NSW government approved in principle the sale of the Short Street car-park to Woolworths for a supermarket development.

This sale has yet to be finalised.

How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie?

Just over four years. My parents grew up in Port Macquarie, met and got married here before moving to Sydney to then retire back in Port Macquarie.

Growing up as a child my sisters and I spent a lot of time in Port Macquarie staying at Nan’s during weekends and school holidays so Port Macquarie has always been a home away from home.

What do you love most about the Hastings?

I love the sense of a safe community and the fact there is always something to do. Each weekend I have an adventure with my daughter, Anastasia, as we explore different parts of the Hastings. This could include visiting a local attraction, dining out, going to the park, movies, taking the dog to the beach or travelling inland to somewhere rural in the Hastings.

Where do you work and what do you love most about your work?

The Port Macquarie Independent. I love the sense of achievement after each issue has been published and the contribution we make to the community. It is nice to feel appreciated and receive the positive feedback from our readers, advertisers, local groups and charities each week. Thank-you for your support!

What do you like least about your work?

Running late for our print deadline! Fortunately we have a professional team that includes our team of skilled designers and owner Sandy Mackenzie and news editor Caroline Strainig. When there is pressure and the tension is high we do our best to pull together as a team to get the work done.

How do you start your day?

Looking after our sheltie, Jock. Then when Ana wakes up it is go, go, go with breakfast, getting dressed, lunches packed, cartoons, teeth brushed, hair and make-up done. Out the door, school drop off and then off to work.

What do you do in your spare time?

Being a single mum a lot of my time is devoted to my daughter. But I try to make time to meet up with friends for coffee, dinner or a girls’ night out.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

Being able to travel. It was a great opportunity to experience different cultures, architecture, food, meet people and make new friends. Travelling has made me realise how fortunate I am to live in such a beautiful place.

The Port Macquarie Dog Training Club is now offering puppy pre-school for puppies 10–16 weeks.

The next course will commence on Wednesday, February 18.

The instructor will be long-time puppy preschool teacher Barb Monument, who recently moved to the area from Sydney.

Barb said enrolling your new family member in puppy pre-school would not only provide them with essential life skills, but give them the opportunity to socialise during their developmental stage of life.

“Whether you are a first-time puppy owner or it has been a long time between puppies, it is important for them to have the best start,” she said.

“You may already know it can be difficult at times to train them properly – toilet training, coming when called, walking on a lead and so on.

“Using positive reinforcement techniques, we aim to give you the knowledge and skills needed to have a happy and healthy relationship with your new family member and to become great canine citizens both at home and in the community.”

Classes run for four weeks and will be held at Stuart Park in Woods Street, Port Macquarie.

The first night will start at 6.30pm to allow for registration and it will be 7pm thereafter.

WILLIAM Shakespeare, who lived in the 17th century, wrote in the Merry Wives of Windsor “he was gotten in drink”.

I was standing in a queue waiting for a cup of coffee recently when an attractive young woman sidled up to me. It doesn’t happen to me very often, so I listened to what she had to say.

She said she hated reading the word gotten in books.

At this moment her husband approached me also and reaffirmed that she hated the Americanism gotten.

“Why can’t they write got?” She asked me.

Some people might be surprised to discover that gotten preceded got in the English language by a couple of hundred years. The earliest use I could find was 1340, but it is much older than that. Some say it was used in British English in the fourth century.

Pam Peters in the Australian English Style Guide says got is used, by Americans and some Australians, when obligation is being expressed, such as in “you’ve got to come”, but gotten is used in the matter of becoming, achieved or acquiring, such as “he had gotten angry”. Many people look to Pam Peters for guidance and she is closely associated with Macquarie Dictionary. I was once appointed a reader for the Oxford dictionary in Australia, but I did very little and I have probably been

So why do we associate gotten with the American version of our language?

Well, apparently gotten was entrenched in the English language when America was colonised by the British. The Americans continued to use the full version, gotten, but over the years the Brits and the Australians decided to cut to a shorter version, got.

I agree with Pam Peters when she says get/ got is the staple of daily communications. She adds that get/got “should not be rooted out everywhere like a noxious weed”.

When we say “he hasn’t got a chance” why can’t we say “he hasn’t a chance”? When we say “you have got to come” why can’t we say “you have to come”?

Get is used these days by lazy people to mean so many things. We say get into bed; I got the job; I got a cold; I got dinner; when I get big; I got to Melbourne by four in the afternoon; I got dressed; when I get married; I’ll get him to do it; and so the list goes on.

Author the late Stephen Murray-Smith says gotten is a relic of Shakespearean English, but then adds “in Australian English it is certainly not archaic”.

Shakespeare, Bacon and Pope have been known to use gotten.

My opinion is that these days we will see gotten more in novels written by Americans, and I think this is why that woman approached me in the coffee queue. She has been reading too many American novels.

My big dictionary says gotten means obtained, acquired or gained, with the first use my big dictionary could find being in 1340. It adds that the word is “now rare, except in illgotten”. Some English people still say getten.

So, it seems that the experts aren’t of much help. They say it is rare, but people still use it.

New granny flat Legal help available promo launched for insurance claims A NEW promotion was launched in Port Macquarie on February 1 that could make it the most opportune time we’ve ever seen to build a granny flat.

The Regional Development Australia (RDA) Affordable Housing Promotion is a sixmonth agreement with participating financial institutions to reduce the rates and fees associated with building a granny flat in the Port Macquarie - Hastings area.

“We encourage affected residents to see Legal Aid lawyers, and they can now come to our new office in Port Macquarie,” he said.

“New laws introduced in June provide a standard definition of flood, which means more people may now be covered for flood damage.

“Even if insurance policies exclude flood it may still cover for other water-related damage such as rain and storms. I would advise all flood-affected residents to lodge a claim with their insurer.”

Rain eases water concerns A massive 366mm fell between January 21 and 27 alone

RECENT heavy rainfall across the Port Macquarie-Hastings region has improved the outlook of our dam levels and as a result of this council general manager Craig Swift-McNair lifted level 3 water restrictions on Monday.

Mandatory level 1 water conservation measures continue to be in place - visit council’s website or your local council office for details.

Council adopted water restriction trigger levels in 2013 and restriction levels are determined by an assessment of daily customer

demands, storage volume available in our dams, and the flow and quality of our river flows.

During 2013-14, our region experienced extended dry periods and council was required to introduce level 3 water restrictions in accordance with its adopted water restrictions triggers.

The adopted trigger level for return to level 1 mandatory water conservation measures is 85 per cent combined storage in Port Macquarie and Cowarra Dam. Also, the level and flow in the Hastings River at Koree Island extraction point needs to have sufficient flow to allow for consistent pumping and climatic conditions need to be favourable.

Late last week Port Macquarie’s dam level was 82.2 per cent and the Cowarra Dam 86.3 per cent, making the combined total storage level of 85.5 per cent. Flows within the Hastings River have increased due to recent rainfall events with a positive forecast for consistent pumping in the coming months. Water quality targets for nutrients and turbidity in the river water must also be met to allow pumping to the storage dams.

“The local community has responded well to help conserve our water resources over the past 12 months,” general manager Craig SwiftMcNair said.

Profile Designer Living rising from ashes Kitchen company ready for a grand reopening DESIGNER Living Kitchens has risen from the ashes – literally.

On March 1 2014 the kitchen manufacturer’s premises in Acacia Avenue, Port Macquarie burnt down.

Next Saturday, February 14, they will have a grand reopening at their new premises at 16 Milton Circuit, Port Macquarie.

While manufacturing has continued virtually unaffected during the past year from an industrial shed at the premises in Milton Circuit, the reopening marks Designer Kitchens taking over the adjacent administration building. This will house all Designer Living’s staff who were temporarily housed on a mezzanine floor above the workshop. It will also enable them to have multiple kitchens on display, so customers can see the quality of the end product before they buy and discuss their requirements with a consultant in relaxed surroundings.

To celebrate their grand reopening they will be offering up to 20 per cent off kitchens if you sign up and have your new kitchen installed before the end of April, plus they will beat any genuine competitors’ written quote.

To add to the fun between 8am and 4pm, there will be promotional bags, a sausage sizzle and the opening of their brand-new clearance centre, which is sure to be a magnet for budget-conscious renovators.

For Todd Barnes and wife Belinda and his brother and sister-in-law Jamie and Penny Barnes, who all

co-own the business, the past year has been a hard but heartening one, and they cannot say enough to thank the many people who have supported them.

“Our suppliers and customers stuck with us and we were able to supply our first kitchen after the fire in only three weeks and three days, which is truly amazing,” Todd said.

In particular he would like to mention Dave from Eagle Insurance and Dave from Mid Coast IT, who he says bent over backwards to help.

The grand reopening is yet another happy chapter in the business, which has been operating successfully for more than 20 years, until 2011 as Olsen’s Joinery with the previous owners.

“At Designer Living Kitchens we specialise in designing and manufacturing high-quality custombuilt kitchens and joinery for both home renovators and new home builders,” Todd said.

Enjoying blues to banjos

Renowned Australian musician CW Stoneking will be playing at Pier One at Panthers later this month, and you’re guaranteed 90 minutes plus of toe-tapping, good-for-thesoul music.

For those who don’t know him, CW Stoneking is a blues singer-songwriter and guitar and banjo player whose songs and music have won an almost cult-like following.

He is a regular at festivals like the Byron Bay Blues and Roots festival and has played at many major venues around the world, including our very own Sydney Opera House.

To date he has released three full-length albums of his original material, they are King Hokum, Jungle Blues and the just released Gon’ Boogaloo, which one critic described as “the most joyously primitive album you’ll hear all year and the most authentic”.

Another critic wrote of the same album: “Gone are the sepia-toned tales of marooned adventures in the tropics of his last release, the ARIA-award-winning Jungle Blues, this time replaced with the latest invention in the world of CW Stoneking, electricity! The gig is part of a regional tour, which follows a national tour celebrating the release of Gon’ Boogaloo.

CW Stoneking said his regional shows are intimate, but he still has the backing of a band and support singers so it is far from being a stripped-back, acoustic performance.

“From really primitive rock and roll to jazz and blues – there’s also heaps of variety in the current show from all my albums,” he said.

He finds his music has a universal appeal, from young to old and everyone in between.

Annual show and shine PORT Macquarie’s Town Green will be the venue for the Coasters Hot Rod Club’s annual show and shine this Saturday, February 7.

Approximately 100 hot rods will take over the parking area in front of Town Green from 4.30-6.30pm. Every year a mixture of pre-1948 cars display a dazzling array of chromed and brightly painted V8s. This is the 13th year that

the club has invited hot rods owners from all over the country to enjoy a weekend of fun in the Hastings.

A band will play rock and roll and the young ones will be able to get up close and personal with Fatty the Rat Rod, the subject of a children’s book written and published by Kendall resident Mitch Oxenborough.

MAKE sure you stomp out to Bago Vineyards this Sunday, February 8.

Bago Vineyards is celebrating the 17th anniversary of the Grape Stomping Championships on Sunday, which will also be the 17th successive year that the well-known group ‘Reds’ Jazz Quintet will have performed at the stomp.

Starting out in 1999 as an added attraction to the popular Jazz in the Vineyards, the grape stomp has also become an annual institution attracting visitors from many parts of the coast and beyond.

For the past 10 or so years the addition of the Media Grape Stomp has added a new dimension to the day as well as providing comedy relief with the friendly banter. The Media Stomp for the past three years has been dominated by the team from Star FM. However this year a team from the Independent will be entering the fray, and rumour has it they have been training hard!

In the early days of the Grape Stomp it was commonplace for between four to five litres of juice be stomped to win a place but in the past few years seven litres of juice is the mark that is required to win top spot.

Sunday’s event is expected to see keen competition between competitors and of the Media Stomp is again expected to draw plenty

The media grape stomp adds another dimension to the day of onlookers. The rain along with the heat in recent weeks has seen plenty of growth in the vines with the grapes being well juiced for the event. Naturally only the finest of rich red juicy grapes will be provided for the stompers with an additional prize, Cold Power, provided for the winners.

Sunday’s entertainment at Bago Vineyards starts at 11am (gates open 10am) with the Media Stomp getting underway at noon followed by the Grape Stomping Championships.

The Beatnix are on their way YES, it’s that time of year again – the Port Macquarie Beatles Festival is about to arrive in Port Macquarie.

This year the festival will run from Thursday, February 12 through to Sunday, February 15, with a packed schedule of entertainment.

One of the headline acts will be Beatles tribute band The Beatnix (pictured).

BOWLS Round-Up PORT PANTHERS MEN’S

The winners in the Major Singles played on Saturday were Tony Mallia, Garry Hunt, Darrel Foster, Ron Maddison, Tom Thrussell, Ken Errington, Ted Fischer, Mick McCloskey, Dave Carney, Bernie Biddle, Peter Wright and John Hallsworth and on Sunday morning the winners were Wayne Thrussell, Jim Cradock, Tiger Kelly, Kevin Lowther, Paul Crosariol and Garry Hunt. The next round of games will be played this Saturday, February 7.

Ken Dinham and Paul Crosariol were the winners in the Tuesday afternoon social bowls.

Kevin Hercus, Karl Toole and Bob Paterson were the winners in the Thursday afternoon social bowls.

The next pennant trial will be held on Saturday, February 14 against Westport with all the games being played at Hibbard Sports Club. The selected teams are on the board. Please be at the club by 12 noon as all the games will start at 12.30pm.

The winners in the Saturday afternoon bowls were Ray Smith, Joy Sykes and Roger Sykes.

Thursday is Men’s Triples, Saturday is Mixed Triples Tuesday is Men’s Pairs – all casual dress with a 1pm start. The 1st Men’s Interclub Day for 2015 will be held at Westport on Sunday, February 15.

LAKE CATHIE MEN’S

The Championship Fours were decided with Barry Bird’s team defeating John Gillet’s, 31-15. A really great game to cap off an equally great series.

Monday’s games were washed out. Thursday’s winners were Steve Townsend, Gary Russell and Graham Bateman, with runners-up being Chica Batts, Steve Webster and Geoff Worley.

Denis Begley and Bob Fischer combined to take out the blue ribbon on Saturday.

Sunday, February 15, it’s the Sunday Triples.

Men Pennant teams, in games which featured some great bowling in a fun atmosphere. It seems that the scores have been mislaid, but the actual playing was the purpose.

Club members have been saddened during the week by the passing of Vince Smith, a member for 28 years, whose positions included president, selector and member of a number of committees, in addition to being a member of pennants teams, and the winner of championships within the club.

Vince was one of the icons of this club, a club he was proud to be associated with.

LAKE CATHIE WOMEN’S

In the Minor Singles Esther Bailey def Pam Begley and Maree Kitcher def Shauna Proctor. Both games were fairly close until the last few ends when Esther and Maree pulled away to finish well.

In an Under 3 Year Singles game, worthy of a final, Rhonda Bateman narrowly def Pam Tye. Last Tuesday was our Presidents Day (unofficial) and over 60 ladies/golden girls attended to celebrate it with president Di. Lucky rink winners were Pat Flatman, Daphne Teiffel and Lois Wright.

On Saturday there were no lucky rink winners as such because of the Pennant Trials. Many of the games were very close and we improved four hundred percent on the last Pennant Trials.

Good luck to all the members playing in the District Pairs. If all goes to plan the finals will be played on Thursday at Westport. Pennant starts next Tuesday, February 10.

This month’s Sunday Roast and Boast has been put back to February 15 because about 40 visiting bowlers are descending on the club. Players are needed for the games that day so please put your name down on the list.

The list for Veterans Day is up on the board in the ladies’ locker room. Vets Day is at North Haven on Monday, April 13 at 10am.

We extend our love and sympathy to Pearl Smith whose husband Vince “Pop” Smith has passed away. They have both been longtime members of the club and have held many positions and worked hard to make Lake Cathie

the great club that it is today. Vince’s gruff voice and humour will be sadly missed.

What a great day the ashes test was. A narrow victory to the Aussies, some friendly sledging and what about MC Leigh rendition of Waltzing Matilda - eat your heart out John Williamson.

The annual Four Club Round Robin for grades 1 and 3 will be held this Saturday, February 7, at Kempsey Heights with roll up at 8.45am. Team sheet is on the board.

The second Pennant Trial is set down for Tuesday, February 10, with Grades 5-7 at 2.30-5 pm followed by a barbecue and grades 1-4 from 6-8 pm. The team lists are on the board so please tick your names to assist the selectors.

As the Australia Day festivities were washed out, we will be holding a black Friday, February 13, twilight Mixed Triples starting at 5pm.

Port City will be hosting LNC representative trials on February 14 at 9 am for 9.30 start. There are a number of Port City bowlers engaged so please check the sheets on the board and tick your names.

Barefoot Bowls Corporate Challenge season 11 will start on February 26 and will run for six weeks. Full details will be available shortly.

The club championship triples begin this week, and entries for the fours close on Saturday, February 7 at 5pm.

Free coaching is available on Sunday mornings (bowls provided). Just turn up at 10am.

WESTPORT MEN’S Saturday/Sunday saw the Club Fours with some excellent bowls. Two games along the way were decided by an extra end due to tied scores.

Team Taylor – Col Baldwin, Keith Martin, Wayne Buckley, Peter Taylor – slowly but surely prevail convincingly over Ando’s Allies – Steve Howard, Ron Coombes, Peter Howard, Bruce Anderson.

Mid Coast Futsal keeps goals coming MID Coast Futsal were very competitive in all age groups at the Craig Foster Cup. The under 9s after their first game improved so much to be scoring goals against top sides. Credit to goalkeeper Blake Cordell and all the boys.

The 14 boys were voted the most improved team over the junior tournament by the referees. Goal scorers were well spread among the team. This team worked very hard and played to their best to have some amazing results.

The 15s team had their work cut out with some older age groups in their pool. The harder the teams the better they performed.

The youth men were outstanding and the Mid Coast Boys went onto the court to press hard and win the

ball and they certainly did, holding top teams to low scores and winning the tight game.

The women’s team played to the level of the competition and narrowly went down to the winning team.

The men’s competition in pool B was always going to be hard. To their credit, they fought hard and scored goals while keeping scorelines to a minimum. The men’s comp was great to watch with many of the Futsalroos playing. Mid Coast took it right up to the top teams, holding the eventual winners to a very close score.

The FFA Group were delighted to have our teams attend and extended another invitation to their state cup.

Clubs do battle in sailing series THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club took part in the first two rounds of interclub racing this weekend. Saturday’s round was at Queens Lake Sailing Club, and Sunday’s round was at Port Macquarie. The 3rd round will be at Great Lakes Sailing Club for their Booti Cup on February 14 and 15th. The 1st round at QLSC had four boats travel from Port Macquarie and six boats from GLSC. Our 2nd round at Port Macquarie had two boats from QLSC and seven boats from GLSC - a pretty good turn up.

The Port Macquarie sailing was sailed in an easterly with a very strong run-out tide which was backed up and made quite dirty from the

heavy rain earlier in the week.

The catamarans were enhanced by the 18-foot cats visiting from Great Lakes, and saw some fast sailing, although the rain seems to have built up the sand spit out off big bay. This, combined with the rain water behind the run out tide and the dirty water led Brett White on Feral Cat to hit the anchor rope to buoy B at speed, severing the rope, and breaking one rudder on the big cat and bending the other, causing him to then hit the spit and force a retirement. This also left the course with one less rounding mark. Our nimble Arrow cats managed to shine once yardsticks were applied, with Frank O’Rourke on Dino taking

the win followed by Jack Corthals on Harpic, Tony Kuhn on Stella, Rowan Nosworthy on Green Machine, Caleb White on Cruel Sea, Dave Winter on Spica, D. Morgan on Wild Cat Fish, Digby Dunn on Clean Skin, and Brett White on Feral Cat. The monohull fleet also had a good mix of visitors, although our Paul Robertson on Mothic managed to take the win.
