Million$ may go Safety design changes rejected by Council

By NIKALA SIM A MULTI-MILLION dollar upgrade and establishment of a much-needed youth facility and service, will not happen, if our local government continues to be obstructive, its project partner says.

Substantial investment of $2.8 million from the Commonwealth Government, $2.5 million from the State Government and $750,000 from Police-Citizens Youth Club NSW (PCYC) has been pledged for the upgrade of the Port Macquarie Sports Stadium.

The entire $6 million is contingent on the joint partnership of the PCYC and Council, and may be in jeopardy, after last Wednesday’s ordinary Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting.

A motion to reject minor design changes was endorsed, leaving the PCYC in a position where it could not support the project in its current form, Chief Executive Darren Black said.

“The current design goes against the principles of design that create a safe youth space,” Mr Black said.

“There are three entry and exit points and we have asked for one. “We have also asked for some walls to be removed and ceilings to be raised to create more open space so youth can be easily seen and monitored.

Police youth club in jeopardy

Hats give hope

By NIKALA SIM JOIN mad hatters for a national event to improve mental health.

Australian Rotary Health’s Hat Day will be celebrated on World Mental Health Day on October 9.

The organisation is the largest nongovernment organisation to fund research for illness of all types, in Australia.

National board member Laurie Barber said Hat Day was a way to acknowledge mental health issues within the community as well as raise funds to improve outcomes into the future.

“Hat Day is a great fun event and Rotarians across the Mid North Coast would love people to create their own hat fundraiser during October, or simply donate,” Mr Barber said.

“Money raised will go to a national research team of medical specialists and they will decide where the money will be most effective.”

Australian Rotary Health was formed in 1981 initially to conduct research into cot deaths.

MUSTANGS, Thunderbirds, Falcons and Meteors will get car enthusiasts all revved up for the Mid North Coast All Ford Day. The event, hosted by the Mid North Coast Ford Owners Club, is a great opportunity to admire all cars Ford.

Club Vice President Laurie Wilesmith said he loved Ford because no one else made a Mustang.

He bought his wife a 2006 Ford Mustang when they lived in America, he said.

“When we were heading back to Australia she said there was no way she was going without the Mustang so we brought it with us.”

Treasurer Ed Clarke said cars would come

from all over NSW for the event at Westport Park with enthusiast able to enjoy the day from 9am until 3pm.

“Ford owners are really excited to show off their cars to the community, make a fun day of it, and raise money for a charitable cause,” Mr Clarke said.

The family-focussed day on the foreshore will feature a show and shine, Ford merchandise, market stalls, car boot sale, jumping castle and food and drink stalls.

Mr Clarke will show off the 1976 Fairlane which he has owned since 1984.

“It used to be the family car but at 1.8 tonne with a V8 engine it is too big and too expensive

to drive daily,” he said.

A good classic car should be well garaged and serviced, Mr Clarke said, and was made of metal unlike the vehicles of today which have lots of plastic.

Anyone who owns a Ford and would like to show it off on October 4 can enter the Mid North Coast All Ford Day, for an entry fee of $10 to be paid on the day. Set up is from 7am.

There will be opportunity to win a trophy for one of the many competition categories including best vehicle of the show, to be presented at 1pm.

The Mid North Coast All Ford Day is sponsored by Shannons and Miedecke Motor Group.

CHINA is only one competition away for three young girls and their robot.

Camden Haven High School students Tiana Moore, Aurora Attenborough and Alisha Cooper have placed third in the state level of the Robotics National Championships.

Two of the team travel, with the financial support of Industry Mid North Coast (IMNC), to Adelaide today to compete for a chance to pit their robot on the international stage.

Industry Mid North Coast Executive Director Jill Follington met with the all-girl team as they prepared for the national challenge.

Organisers and sponsors of the recent Manufacturing and Engineering Expo were proud to support team members Tiana Moore and Aurora Attenborough, Ms Follington said.

A 12-page report by an independent quantity surveyor was submitted to Council in January this year, Mr Black said.

The report indicated that the PCYC design changes would come in at around $100,000 less than the current approved design.

A majority councilor vote rejected the proposed revisions on the basis that they presented “significant and reputational risk” to the Council.

Council had not disclosed to PCYC what the significant financial and reputational risks were and the PCYC were surprised by this claim, Mr Black said.

Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant said the project was of great significance to the Port Macquarie community, especially young people.

The PCYC had indicated to him its concern about the current status of the project and its management, he said, including a lack of adequate consultation and access to key personnel within Council.

He was aware that cost neutral concepts for design improvements had been tabled, Minister Grant said.

“In my opinion, it is important that these improvements are approved and that the project is progressed in a prompt fashion.

“I understand that the PCYC has also indicated to staff at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council that it is ready, willing and able to fulfill the role of project manager, thereby eliminating any significant financial risk to Council.

“The NSW Government is committed to establishing a Police-Citizens Youth Club in Port Macquarie but should this project continue to experience ongoing delays, and there is an unwillingness to cooperate and work in partnership with the PCYC, then we will have to reconsider this investment.”

Despite repeated requests, the PCYC had been unable to meet with Council and the preferred builder to work through the proposed design improvements, and had only received formal written correspondence, Mr Black said.

“Our reasonable requests to help move the project forward have continually fallen on deaf ears.”

The overall Port Macquarie Sports Stadium upgrade includes the addition of two extra courts and establishment of the youth club.

Included in the PCYC funding arrangement is the employment of two police officers to staff the facility. “The PCYC works to help young people engage with life, develop skills, character and leadership through participation in sporting, cultural and welfare programs, Mr Black said.

Improved youth engagement was proved to reduce and prevent crime by, and against, young people, he said.

Not all ‘refugees’ are as they seem

INTERESTING article in Your Local Independent (10/9/15) - Taking the fear out of religion – about a forum on the ability of Christianity and Islam to co-exist.

This forum was well thought out and had a lot of religious, academic and political heavyweights behind it.

The so-called refugees in Europe are not persecuted Syrian Christians but mainly Muslims. Many are from Africa and 72 per cent are men.

But the Western media networks show mainly Muslim women and children.

Overseas media outlets show what really is happening in Europe on the internet. Islamic men are rampaging through towns in Germany, Italy, France, Greece and Budapest destroying property and intimidating the locals.

Many are throwing bottles of water and food back at the people who are trying to help them at railway stations. In Italy some turfed old people out of cars and overturned buses.

This is an invasion of Europe by young Muslim men.

Hijrah is the Islamic doctrine of

migration and can be found in the Quran 4:100. Islamic sources say there are 4000 terrorists infiltrated with the ‘refugees’.

The Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel earlier said she would take in the absurd amount of 500,000 refugees, then changed her mind and refused to let them into Germany.

The real oppressed Christian and other minorities are in hiding in Syria and other Middle Eastern countries.

They are not travelling with the Muslims to Europe as they are afraid of being killed.

Some believe that Allah is another

name for Yahweh or Jehovah but the god of Islam is not the Old Testament Christian God but the moon god that was worshipped in the Middle East centuries before Christ. He was chief of the gods of a local area and Mohammed claimed the name Allah.

The crescent moon on all Islamic flags signifies the moon god from the ancient world in Sumeria, Persia and Palestine.

Dementia month DURING Dementia Awareness Month in September, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is calling for the community to help create a dementiafriendly nation, where people living with dementia are respected, valued and supported.

OVER the past few months I have been admitted to the Port Macquarie Base Hospital several times, what a wonderful place. The Nurses, Doctors, and catering staff are always polite courteous and nothing is ever a trouble for them. Thank you for the way that you have treated me while in your care.

TO the persons responsible for applying chicken wire to the board walk in Kooloonbung Creek near Edwards Street. For walkers and those using walking aides it is a hazard. The wire bulges in many places, another trip hazard. Dogs do not like it, they walk tentatively on the edge not covered, often losing their balance and falling. Has it been applied as deterrent to four legged pets walking in the area? If yes, then prohibit dogs, a sign would be cheaper. What about the local fauna? If there’s a good reason why it has been applied, please let the public know.

We think it is an invitation to vandals to wreak havoc with a pair of wire cutters.

TO the female cyclist who passed stationary traffic on Ocean Drive and proceeded onto the roundabout at Emerald Downs.

You caused traffic on the roundabout to come to a standstill as you rode through. This may have been a momentary lapse focusing on training rather than the traffic, but please have the courtesy to obey the road rules.

TO Zebu Bar and Grill for continuous delicious, fresh meals and service like none other.

Thumbs Down TO the rubbish tip on Granite Street. The utes full of rubbish block the view of traffic. They obviously have no consideration for neighbors and passing traffic that must look at the mess every single day.

I KNOW that writing this column leaves me wide open for criticism, I can cope with that, we are all entitled to our own opinions and I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. I don’t expect anyone to agree with me.

From the Heart is exactly that, heart based musings from my life experiences, rather than just my opinion. So, the musings are generating fairly positive responses about 95% of the time…the other 5% are downright negative and I have to say disgraceful! The worst part, my staff have copped abusive phone calls from people that: 1. Will not leave their name or number for me to contact them back.

2. Think it is OK to abuse people over the phone who have nothing to do with the situation.

3. Then spread malicious gossip in the community Your Local Independent is a vehicle for the community to have a voice. Our small team works tirelessly to produce a FREE publication every week.

We work very closely with businesses, community groups and charity organisations to keep the community updated with fresh and relevant information. We live here, we love our community and we support it wherever we can.

Park plans opinions sought

COUNCIL would like to hear the public’s thoughts on proposed upgrades to three local playgrounds.

Wade Park in Beechwood, Allan Road Park and Timbertown Estate Reserve in Wauchope are included in upgrade plans and the community is invited to share their thoughts tomorrow on what they would like to see at each of these parks. Council’s Community and Economic Growth Director Tricia Bulic said that as part of the 2015/16 Operational Plan Council was looking at the upgrading of 14 playgrounds across the Port Macquarie-Hastings region.

“Hearing the thoughts of the families that frequent these playgrounds is extremely important in ensuring that we provide facilities that can be enjoyed by our little ones and their families for many years to come,” said Ms Bulic.

“I encourage residents, their children and the community to meet with the Council team and share their thoughts on possible improvements, and to discuss play options in each location”.

Couch surfers support youth

By NIKALA SIM LAST Friday night, in our community, more than one young person was homeless.

In solidarity, Jenna Mynott, Jennifer O’Connell, Mariane Power and Julie Jamieson, slept on their couches to raise money for The Salvation Army Couch Project.

The four were sponsored by friends and family to join the fight against youth homelessness in Australia.

Together they have raised over $650 for The Salvation Army youth centres and, by speaking out, have raised awareness of couch surfing - the most common form of youth homelessness.

King Creek resident Jenna Mynott said she discovered the initiative when she saw a Twitter

by Home and Away star Ray Meagher, who plays Alf Stewart.

“I think the big thing that got me when I watched Ray Meagher’s Twitter was the number of homeless youth,” Mrs Mynott said.

“On any one night over 44,000 young people are homeless and 94 per cent do not sleep on the streets – they do what is called couch surfing.”

Port Macquarie’s Jennifer O’Connell said she slept with only a cotton blanket to keep her warm.

“I just didn’t think I should be too comfortable,” Mrs O’Connell said.

“I didn’t sleep very well and I realise many couches young people are sleeping on are probably not as comfortable as the ones we slept on.

Mariane Power, Julie Jamieson, Jennifer O’Connell and Jenna Mynott ditched their beds last week to join The Salvation Army Couch Project.

“I cannot imagine how hard it would be – feelings of loneliness, not knowing whose couch you may actually end up on, and possibly putting yourself at risk to avoid being on the street.

“It may start out safe but may not end up that way.”

Julie Jamieson said she sees at least one or two homeless young people each week in her role at Headspace Port Macquarie, an early intervention mental health service for 12-25 year olds.

“I can’t imagine even asking to sleep on someone’s couch,” Mrs Jamieson said.

“There are definitely a lot of issues to do with

young people at risk of homelessness and there are definitely not enough services to help.”

ReachOut.com.au, soup kitchens, the Big Red Bus, the internet and Reap were a few services that could help, Mariane Power said.

“But these don’t help with the stress of the experience.”

Plans online for highway works with feedback invited on new ramps at Macksville

Police are in holiday mode POLICE are appealing to road users to exercise sound judgement and display personal responsibility while on the road these school holidays.

Police will be out in force to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely.

“It is well known to police and road users that the risks on our roads are speeding, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seat belt, and being distracted by a mobile phone,” Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver said.

How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie?

I moved from Sydney to Port with my family 12 years ago via Coffs, Lithgow, Devonport in Tassie (where I met my wife) and also Goulburn. I grew up around Newtown.

What do you love most about the Hastings?

So many great places to see and things to do in such close proximity. There’s literally an event on every weekend that you can be involved in. It’s also an incredible place to raise a family.

Where do you work and what do you love about your work?

I’m the Promotions Co-ordinator with Holiday Coast Credit Union which involves a lot of Community Engagement. I love travelling around and meeting locals from the Hunter Region to the Coffs Coast (that’s the HCCU footprint where you’ll find our 12 branches) and discovering what makes them tick, what they want to achieve and how we can help.

I get a buzz from making a contribution to achieve great team results.

What do you like least about your work?

Having to share my road trips with Holiday Coast mascot Kenny Koala. He never shares the driving, he’s always sleeping and when he’s awake he’s constantly messing around with the air-con and the radio in the car.

How do you start your day?

Coffee, Fox Sports News, National News on the tele, then Local Radio News on the way into work. I can’t get enough of reading the papers. It’s fair to say I like to keep informed.

What do you do in your spare time?

When I’m not chauffeuring the kids around you’ll find me on the cricket field with the Port City Leagues Magpies where I’m also the Club Secretary. I’ve just recently been appointed to the Mayor’s Sporting Fund and Hastings Senior Cricket Committees as well as working alongside the Business Awards and Life Education Committees. Otherwise I’m just on my backside watching sport.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

Helping to raise two incredible kids and who are completely different but carry my slightly crazy and creative genes. I’m not sure how my wife Lynne copes with having three children to take care of.

on works backlog FOR the 2014/15 financial year, council adopted a $93.6 million capital works (projects) program.

A report to the August 2015 council meeting indicated that council had delivered just $45.5 million of that $93.6 million allocated, or just under half of what was adopted.

With a bulging $204 million now held in cash reserves, double what was held just three years ago and a $250 million backlog of infrastructure renewal or replacements, up substantially on previous years, something has to give.

What is becoming quite clear is that there is something very wrong with council’s ability to deliver projects and/or key infrastructure in a timely manner.

This in effect is driving an unhealthy large cash reserve and mammoth backlog of works – according to the NRMA, one of the largest backlogs in the State of NSW. Council’s recent submission to the State Government with respect to the Fit For the Future was adopted by a majority of councillors.

Within that submission, it was adopted that the preferred option to reach the ‘sustainable’ targets (which included resourcing and income) as set by the State Government, that council was in principle supportive of a rate rise of more than 39% over a five-year period.

It’s very hard to see the justification for a rate rise anytime soon when firstly, there is so much cash in the reserves and the delivery of projects is being delivered at half the rate that is being aspired to.

In my opinion, what is very good news about this predicament is that clearly there is no immediate need to raise rates and I would be very

surprised if the State Government through IPART (the Independent body who approves rate rises) actuals allows a 39% increase.

What remains a problem is ensuring a plan to remedy the current lack of progress on delivery is forthcoming, and quickly.

Accountability for the current lack of delivery is both a councillor and general manager responsibility. And the buck must stop there.

To that end, at this month’s council meeting I successfully moved an individual councillor’s motion that requested the general manager (the responsible manager for council’s operations) bring back an urgent plan to the October 2015 meeting on how the current situation with respect to the delivery of projects can be turned around.

Without trying to pre-empt the general manager’s response, I would think that the community would expect something that is proactive, positive and inventive, rather than simply a concession or backward to plan to deliver less to fit within the current framework and resourcing.

Outsourcing of projects when possible, the reallocation of resources within the organisation and or organisational structure changes are all possibilities that should be explored.

Chip in for safe return of mates

ONE inquisitive dog is lucky to be home.

Choco decided to venture out of his yard to look for some excitement. He headed toward the sound of voices at the local school and staff soon realised he was lost.

Upon collection by council rangers it was discovered Choco had a microchip and so he was reunited with his owners.

Kempsey Shire Council Senior Ranger Robert Watson (pictured with Choco) said microchipping and registering your dog or cat with local council was a vital safety step in case they got lost.

The microchip allows rangers to search the NSW Companion Animal Register to find an owner’s name, address, contact number and secondary contact person so it is important to keep details up to date.

The registration fee is a once-only payment for a dog or cat for its lifetime in NSW. “I would like to see an ending to all of our lost animal stories like Choco,” Ranger Watson said.

Words alone can often inspire passion

SOME words arouse the passion in people whenever they are uttered.

Take holocaust, for instance.

This word brings to the fore some of the most despicable elements of World War II. The Jewish element will never forget some aspects of WWII and their feelings can best be summed up by one word – holocaust - usually written with a capital H. But here is a word that has been around since earlier than the year 1250.

I won’t say that in that year it represented entirely innocent activities because, according to my research, it didn’t.

In 1250 it represented a burnt offering, or a sacrifice entirely consumed by fire.

The first use I discovered was in the story of Genesis and Exodus, 1250. It continued in that vein through the ages, always with the meaning of being consumed by fire.

In 1661 it had a slight shift in meaning to complete destruction by fire or a great slaughter, or even a massacre.

In many cases it was spelt with a capital H. I’m not quite sure how a capital changes the meaning,

except perhaps to emphasise the enormity of the deed. In 1680 we had the “altar of Holocausts” but in 1940 Hansard of the British House of Commons reported “the general holocaust of civilised standards”. Then came the Holocaust, with the meaning most people understand. The word was applied to the mass murder of Jews by the Nazis in the war of 1939-45.

The specific application was introduced by historians during the 1950s.

They apparently sought a word to describe what they were trying to convey, but the first use in this context that I could find was in the News Chronicle of December 5, 1942. The News Chronicle added that: “The word has gone forth that the Jewish peoples are to be exterminated.

The conscience of humanity stands aghast.”

The word has gone down in history to represent the foulest of deeds.

In 1985 A Ramati in And Violins Stopped Playing said “there are memorials for all the nations whose people died there, except for the Gypsies”.

The Greeks had a word holos, which I understand meant entire or whole, and kaustas, which meant burnt. Related words these days are caustic and cauterise.

The poet John Milton used the word holocaust in the late 17th century in the context of complete destruction by fire.

William Tindale mentioned holocaust in his 1526 translation of the Bible.

On another matter, I came across a 2011 letter from Margaret Hurle of the New England region that said Bob Hawke claimed Tony Abbott was as mad as a cut snake.

“Having encountered a number of snakes I have to think that a cut snake is angry. It’s a pity that someone who projects Australianism doesn’t know much about cut snakes”, Margaret said.

I don’t know about angry, but Tony Abbott would not be too happy this week.

THE achievements and contributions of the men in our community will be honoured at a special event on November 19.

The International Men’s Day evening will put the spotlight on the inspirational stories of everyday men, organiser Kate Hutten said.

Nineteen men have been invited to tell their stories on International Men’s Day and each week Your Local Independent will introduce them to you.

This week we tell Sebastian’s story.

Sebastian, an engineer, was recently out of work for five months. Depressed, he got coaching from beyondblue’s NewAccess program, put structure into his week and started regularly connecting with older guys for coffee and chat. “Being open and honest with older blokes is very therapeutic,” he said.

Sebastian heard other men tell their stories of childhood bullying, depression, relationship breakdowns and suicide attempts.

Having denied inner pain for most of his life, he now accepts tears to release emotions.

“I am grateful to friends, counsellors and 12-step fellowships where raw honesty and kindness have helped so much,” he says.

“Let’s get real, seek help, stop bottling things up, forgive and make amends for the sake of the next generation.” Sebastian calls this “connecting men across generations” and believes this can bring healing to our world.

SINCE my last Canberra Connections column, there has been quite a number of events that have taken place in the nation’s capital.

As most be would be aware, the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party’s decision to change its Leader means that Australia has a new Prime Minister.

As a member of The Nationals, I do not vote on the Leader of Liberal Party and therefore who becomes Prime Minister in a Coalition Government. Members and senators of our party vote for the Leader of The Nationals. It is then our leader who becomes Deputy Prime Minister in a Coalition Government.

Following the Liberal Party’s decision to change its leadership, a new Coalition agreement was required between the new Liberal Leader Malcolm Turnbull and the Nationals Leader Warren Truss.

The Nationals parliamentary party met to discuss the agreement following the change in Liberal Party leadership and decided that in order to form government with our Liberal colleagues, a number of important initiatives would need to be included in a new Coalition agreement.

In addition to various structural aspects of the Coalition agreement including regional representation in the Ministry, Warren Truss and Malcolm Turnbull have agreed to a broad range of key policy issues, including the maintenance of our existing policies in relation to climate change, carbon taxes and emissions reduction targets.

The Nationals have also resolved and received agreement for the transfer of responsibility of the water policy outcomes of the Department of Environment and the Murray Darling Basin Authority into the Agriculture Portfolio.

The Coalition Agreement also ensures ongoing funding will be delivered for communications technology including the mobile phone and television black spot programs and The Nationals

With the change in the Coalition leadership’ agreement has been reached between the new Liberal Leader Malcolm Turnbull and the Nationals Leader Warren Truss. Warren Truss and Malcolm Turnbull have agreed to a broad range of key policy issues.

Support was also given to The Nationals commitment to the Northern Australia and Agriculture White Papers and our Dams Implementation Policy.

Malcolm Turnbull also agreed to maintain the existing policy to refer the same sex marriage issue to a plebiscite of the people in our next term.

This latest agreement further ensures The Nationals are able to continue to deliver for regional Australia and will continue to deliver for regional families, businesses and communities.

As I have continued to reiterate throughout the course of this week’s events, my first priority is my electorate, my second priority is my electorate and my third priority is my electorate.

Under this Coalition Government, this electorate is now receiving record funding far beyond what we were getting under the former Labor/Greens/independent Government and the new Coalition agreement signed this past week will ensure our solid investment regional Australia continues.

Remove graffiti blight from sight OUR community is fed up with graffiti tags staining our houses, businesses and public areas which is why I’m encouraging people to get behind Graffiti Removal Day being held on Sunday, October 18.

Graffiti Removal Day is a great opportunity for community groups and local residents to get involved in the graffiti clean-up and send vandals a message.

The only tag we want to see is the hashtag #rolluptorollout that will be all over social media as we encourage a record number of volunteers to join the graffiti clean-up.

Graffiti costs over $100 million each year to clean up in NSW alone and that’s money far better spent on improving services for the community.

Graffiti Removal Day has been getting bigger every year and grassroots community support is crucial to its success.

Last year about 2,000 volunteers removed 21,000 square metres of graffiti from about 275 sites across NSW, saving the government and private property owners an estimated $1.5 million. These locally based co-ordinators will work with local community groups and networks such as Landcare, to connect with their communities and to focus on projects that will make a difference to the environment and reflect what local communities want to achieve.

Restoring local sites is why many Landcare volunteers became involved in the network in the first place and this will give them a chance to focus on that work.

A Landcare Future Fund Initiative will also be established to ensure resources are dedicated to developing options for Landcare’s future financial sustainability.

Good intents at work to this day

A storm blew the tent away but Bill Newman’s message was louder.

Way back when

IN 1995 (twenty years ago) the Bill Newman Crusade on Westport Park was one of the most significant events in recent times in the Christian Church in Port Macquarie.

For the first time almost every Church in Port Macquarie participated alongside each other to advance the Kingdom of God in our city.

Bill Newman is a Queensland preacher who conducted outreach events around Australia for many years. As a result hundreds if not thousands of Australians have made their peace with God through Jesus Christ.

The local event was headed up by former Mayor John Barrett & Graeme Butler along with several local Church ministers. Significant numbers of people began to pray and prepare for this event which was to be held in March 1995.

A huge three-masted crusade tent was erected on Westport Park, only to be blown down by the strong winds from a Queensland cyclone the next night. It was a dramatic start as local Christian men fought to save the tent in gale force winds and lashing rain.

At 11.30pm, after the tent had been saved, the

men stood hand-in-hand on Westport Park with rain lashing their faces and prayed for God to bring revival to our city.

The first Sunday night meeting was held in the open-air with 1000 people attending.

Ironically this number would not have fitted into the original tent! The tent was put back-up the next day and the crusade began.

As Bill Newman told the good news about Jesus Christ, hundreds of lives were touched and many people found their peace with God. Some of the Christian converts are significant leaders in the Port Macquarie Churches today.

This crusade not only saw many people touched by God, but was the catalyst for Church unity that still flows among the local Churches to this day.

I’m not saying that my life has been a bed of roses since then. Believe me, I have endured a lot of crap over the years. I have taken the wrong path on many occasions and spent many an hour thinking, woe is me!

Nothing better than a good pity party. I got lost many a time but my faith in God has always picked me up.

The point is, there is always HOPE ... I could have just continued down the path and followed my parents lead, I chose not to.

I chose to follow the path of Christianity. I’ve stuffed up, I’ve failed, and I’ve sinned over the years.

The only constant in my life? God’s faithfulness and love towards me, that gives me HOPE!

NO MATTER what, there is always HOPE! Feeling hopeless is one of the most debilitating experiences we can endure as humans. We become overwhelmed, to the point where we can’t cope, can’t see any positives and the negativity around us starts to take over every thought or feeling that we have.

It’s a black hole that’s closing in and seems impossible to escape from.

What a depressing statement…Where is the HOPE? The HOPE, lies deep within each and every one of us, we just have to tap into it.

My life has never been pretty. I grew up in a totally dysfunctional family with alcohol, and domestic violence. Verbal and physical abuse were just part of the norm in our household.

My parents both used and abused each other, had affairs, and then went on to use my brothers and I as the pawns in their marriage breakdown.

It was during this time that some kids I knew at school invited me to their home. I didn’t get invites very often, especially to normal households, so it was an eye-opening experience.

These people were a large loving family, not judgemental and just knew how to get the most out of life and have fun. They introduced me to

IT is a fresh, new season at Coastside Church this year with lots of awesome and successful changes!

Change can be daunting for people, but when it’s good change then everyone benefits!

This year has seen some really good changes happen in the daily life of Coastside from our ID Youth Ministry, our Shine Sisterhood and our Sunday services!

Sunday nights at Coastside Church got a whole lot sharper with the introduction of our 6pm night service, which follows the exact format of our Sunday morning service.

Our style is pretty contemporary and very untraditional, we like live bands, coloured lights and modern music.

We like to play hilarious multimedia clips and laugh at the jokes in the preaching.

We are a church for people who may have never walked through the front door of a church before or who may only know what it’s like to go to a traditional style service.

We have two statements that we stand for at Coastside Church, that you can ‘Come As You Are’ and that everybody is ‘Born For More’.

You will find our seats full of teenagers, families and the senior generations. We have Life Groups that you can be a part of. We have social Connect Groups that run in our community.

Our ID youth ministry is massive, every Friday night well over 100 young people from high schools in our area come together for an awesome time.

ID is growing rapidly and our youth team is brilliant in how they love and work with the youth. And finally, our Shine Sisterhood has

Redkite charity scholarship dream come true for Tristian Aspiring musician and cancer survivor Tristian Stone and one of his best friends Tahleah Hammond.

CANCER has only been an off-note in the life of one inspirational young musician.

Tristian Stone has successfully fought Burkitt lymphoma – a fast growing and potentially fatal cancer.

It took surgery and intensive chemotherapy but the 19-year-old is now on the rehabilitation road to success.

The Port Macquarie aspiring musician has been awarded a 2015 Redkite and Coles Dare to Dream Scholarship.

Tristian’s application was a video outlining his journey with cancer.

“It was an excruciating two weeks waiting for the letter to come,” Tristian said.

“The scholarship was supposed to be $5000 but when the judges saw my video they upped it to $8000.

“I was touched and surprised when they told me - my heart was racing and beating out of my chest I was so excited,” he said.

“This scholarship means the world to me - it’s exactly the kind of kick start I need

to help make my lifelong dream become a reality.” His dream was to do anything to do with music and together with friends Tahleah Hammond and Hannah Tait, he has covered a few popular tracks already.

But with recording equipment and new instruments bought with the Redkite scholarship he hopes to realise his dream.

Redkite Chief Executive Jenni Seton said the scholarship had the potential to change young lives.

“There’s a confidence and renewed motivation that young people get from receiving the scholarship that reaches well beyond the monetary aspects,” Ms Seton said.

Coles State General Manager Thinus Keeve sat on the NSW selection panel.

“Tristian has a great drive to succeed and we are delighted to support his scholarship to help him pursue his passion.”

Redkite supports the emotional, financial and education needs of children and young people with cancer and their families.

Leaders help homeless Councillors invited to sleep ‘rough’ for a night

HOMELESSNESS on the Mid North Coast is a growing problem in our community, with an estimated 50-80 people sleeping rough each and every night just in the Macleay Valley alone.

FACS expect to support approximately 3,144 clients each year who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This doesn’t include the numbers that are ‘couch surfing’ as technically, they have a roof over their head.

Last Tuesday, September 15, Co-Founder of Powerful Son Revolution (PSR) Andrew McGowan, addressed the Kempsey Shire Council at their monthly meeting and invited councillors to spend a night on the street to fully experience a night as a homeless person.

“PSR is planning an event ‘Ghost Night on the Street’ named in honour of co-founder Greg Host in the near future, and we have also invited David Gillespie to join the Kempsey councillors.

Cr Anna Shields has accepted the invitation and deserves to be congratulated on being the first to take up the challenge,” said Mr McGowan.

Mr McGowan went on to say: “What we are doing, is similar to the annual CEO Sleep Out which raises awareness and funds for the plight of the homeless. In this case, the invitation was inspired by the true story of one of our locals.”

We believe, that by raising awareness and hopefully funds, we can encourage more positive outcomes like Michaels “At 15, Michael, a young Dunghutti boy, slept on the streets of Kempsey. He slept on a bed of toilet paper, in public toilets and ate out of garbage bins.

“Michael had a dream that he never let go of and just last week at 16, graduated with a certificate 2 in Motor Mechanics and now aims to study V8 motor racing mechanics.

“We believe, that by raising awareness and hopefully funds, we can encourage more positive outcomes like Michaels.”

PSR, also works closely with Youth Work, Shed Happens Men Yarn Up and Suicide Prevention.

A morning tea was held last Wednesday at Woolworths Kempsey to celebrate the $2000 raised from BBQ’s held at the store over the past 3 years.

“We thank Woolworths Kempsey and the Macleay Valley community for their ongoing support and generous hearts…none of the work or results achieved would be possible without you, thank you!” he said.

FIRSTLY, may I say thanks to everyone who has commented on my columns in the GODSMACKED section of Your Local Independent each month.

Thanks to Sandy Mackenzie for allowing the column to run.

Whilst conducting a funeral service recently one Friday, I had no fewer than 10 people comment about my column.

I hadn’t yet seen it in print myself.

One person asked me, “Is there really a heaven? What is it like?”

I think this question was prompted by our focus on death at the funeral and the column I wrote in last month’s Godsmacked – “God Lives Here – Port Macquarie. A Slice of Heaven.”

Let me say unequivocally, “YES, there is a heaven”.

Firstly, because Jesus said so! In John 14:1-2, He stated, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me.

In my Father’s House are many rooms, if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.”

Jesus also declared the way to get to heaven in verse 6 – “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.”

The late D. B. Knox (former Principal of Moore College & broadcast for Sydney Radio 2CH in 1975) stated, “Heaven is the culmination of God’s purpose in creating us.

To be in His presence, to see His face, to be His and to reign and rule with Him forever.

What a wonderful finale.”

There are some amazing descriptions of the wonder of heaven in the Bible.

Let me share two. I will share more insights, in next month’s column.

When he began his recording career in 1974, Australia was still in vice-like grip of the cultural cringe. He plunged into the deep water and in his wake followed the Skyhooks and Paul Kelly, Cold Chisel, INXS, Midnight Oil and hundreds of others.

Clapton’s songs are omnipresent on the radio. His records chart the political landscape of the nation and the turbulent lives of two generations. In 1999 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

RICHARD Clapton, one of Australia’s foremost singer/songwriters, will appear at The Glasshouse tomorrow night.

After more than 40 years of treading the boards on the Australian rock scene, Richard Clapton (pictured) is on a different style of tour.

With the fantastic response to Richard’s recent memoirs, “The Best Years of Our Lives” in 2015, it occurred to him that audiences might just would appreciate a hybrid show featuring not just the music, but all the often crazy and often emotional stories behind the music.

The shows on the forthcoming tour will be in intimate mode – just Richard and the masterful Danny Spencer on guitar. Danny and Richard have been musical partners for well over a decade and Danny has become a well-established part of Richard’s musical DNA. The book covers the halcyon years from the late Sixties in London to the Seventies and Eighties on the Oz rock scene. The musical journey onstage will cover those days of “The Golden Age” the likes of which we will never see again, accompanied by storytelling from one of the true survivors of those times.

This is so much more than mere nostalgia or a trip down memory lane – this is a reliving of those times whether you are old enough to remember, or young enough to just want to know what it was like.

Two games worthy of a final NRL WRAP CASEY O’CONNOR RUGBY League fans are enjoying top shelf performances as the competition draws to its climax.

After sensational performances last weekend from the Roosters and Cowboys the four teams who dominated the season are just 80 minutes away from making a grand final appearance. While there are no games in Sydney this weekend, clubs from one end of the eastern seaboard to the other are represented in the preliminary finals.

On Friday night all roads lead to Suncorp for a game of Origin proportions as the Roosters and Broncos do battle to secure the first spot in the grand final.

The Roosters booked their spot in Friday night’s showdown after a dominant 38-12 win over the Bulldogs. The Dogs were off the chain and solid in the opening exchanges and the game looked likely to deliver the arm wrestle many had predicted. A litany of mistakes from the Bulldogs at crucial stages let the Roosters off the hook allowing them to post first points – their first win for the night.

The Roosters rested Mitchell Pearce for this game giving their playmaker another week to nurse his injured hamstring. His replacement, Jackson Hastings, was a dominant influence in the game as was the big forward pack.

The match was not without controversy. In the 51st minute the Roosters’ Kane Evans was awarded a controversial try. Most commentators and Doggies fans thought the ball had been grounded short of the line. It seemed to be a turning point in the game but it cannot be said it cost the Dogs the game. There was

no doubting the Roosters domination in the game.

However, it is difficult to estimate how much of the win can be attributed to the poor performance of the Bulldogs who saved one of their worst performances all season for this game. The handling from both sides at times was poor and if the Roosters are to win at Suncorp they cannot afford to offer the Broncos easy opportunities.

Brisbane had the luxury of a week off to recharge their batteries. There has been little between these two teams this season. In round six bragging rights went the way of the Broncos on the back of a Ben Hunt try in extra time. In round 24 the Roosters stopped the Broncos’ march to the Minor Premiership with a tough 12-10 win. Head-to-head stats show the Broncos hold a narrow advantage.

It goes without saying that Bennett will have the Broncos trained to the minute. The biggest advantage they take in to this game will be the support of the Suncorp crowd with many expecting an Origin atmosphere.

The result may depend on which team handles the occasion best and, of course, who gets or orchestrates that lucky break at a crucial time. Hunt may well be the player that can do that. In what will be a game worthy of a grand final I think it will be a Broncos win, giving captain Justin Hodges the chance of a fairytale end to his remarkable career.

On Saturday the action switches to AAMI Park in Melbourne. With no AFL games in the sporting capital nothing less than a sell-out crowd is expected for the battle between the Storm and Cowboys.

The Cowboys were clinical and ruthless in Townsville last weekend as they reeled in and filleted the Sharks. The Cowboys saved their best home performance of the year for last as they cut the Sharks to shreds. Coote combined to produce their best kicking game of the season as the Cowboys galloped away with the game.

The Sharks looked to have lost their captain when he suffered an ankle injury and left the field before half-time. Gallen returned after the break and, love him or hate him, he showed again he is one of the toughest in the game. He was one of the few shining lights for the Sharks but the Cowboys had him ‘hog tied’.

The NQlanders know better than most that in finals football you must seize every opportunity and on Saturday they will be hoping to ride the wave of momentum all the way to the grand final.

Standing in their way is one of the most experienced outfits in the business, Melbourne Storm. Coach Craig Bellamy admitted his troops needed the week off to regroup after defeating the Roosters in a torrid encounter in week one of the finals.

The Storm go into this game knowing the Cowboys will approach the match with a game plan to negate their strengths and try and contain them.

The prospect of the match-up between Origin teammates JT and Cooper Cronk should have all league fans salivating. Last Saturday Cowboys young hooker Jake Granville stepped up after a quiet performance against the Broncos. He faces an enormous test here against the very best in the business Cameron Smith.

Who heads to the grand final from here is a real toss of the coin. My heart says Cowboys but my head leans slightly towards Melbourne. Either way this will be an encounter worthy of any grand final.

Perhaps the team that wins will ultimately lift the trophy in Sydney on the biggest rugby league stage of all.

WARM spring conditions prevailed for 128 players in the Wauchope Men’s Veterans Stableford event held on Tuesday, September 15.

St Peter’s girls shine during tough campaign

By SCOTT HENDERSON THE St Peter’s Primary School netball squad are savouring the sweet taste of success following a fruitful competitive campaign last week.

The side, which is coached and managed

by Mrs Lee Spencer and Mrs Elyssa Cross, competed in the 2015 Schools Cup Final held at Netball Central in Homebush Olympic Park on Tuesday, September 15.

The Schools Cup competition showcases the best and brightest talent from all Catholic, Independent and Public Schools in New South Wales.

The girls recently participated in a netball carnival in Kempsey, where they won all of their competitive fixtures to be crowned North Coast champions. As a result, the girls qualified for the Schools Cup, where they tested their mettle against the winners of the seven other regions in NSW last week.

Mrs Di Hughes, who is a representative for the St Peter’s Primary School netball side, said that the girls played exceptionally well to receive a final placing of fifth in the state. With results going down to the wire, the girls were unlucky not to rank higher.

“They were very close to reaching fourth place, but because of a countback on points, they actually came fifth in the state overall,” Mrs

“They really rose to the occasion and played The girls played the likes of St Raphael’s well as a team,” Mrs Hughes said. “They were Catholic School, St Paul’s Catholic Primary disappointed to place fifth…but I think that it School, Valentine Public School, and St was a good eye-opener for them to play other Carthage’s Primary School, to show that they can schools, especially metropolitan schools.”

According to Mrs Hughes, the girls’ success and team chemistry came as a result of plenty of match time together outside of school netball.

The girls’ involvement in the Hastings Valley Netball Competition provided an excellent platform for them to hone their skills, and come together for the Schools Cup. “They had played their grand final here in Port Macquarie on the Saturday before, so they have been playing a lot of netball together recently,” Mrs Hughes said.

Nobody could accuse the girls of lacking heart, as they backed up just one day after the Schools Cup to contest the Lismore Diocese Netball Knockout Competition Final in Grafton.

Facing off against Catholic School sides from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads, the girls played valiantly to win all of their matches and wrap up the 2015 Lismore Diocese Netball Championship.

Mrs Hughes paid tribute to the team’s coaches for their commitment and high quality coaching this year.

“Lee and Elyssa have really coached the girls well throughout this year… they have done a fantastic job.”

Exciting times for Tacking Point nippers TACKING Point Surf Life Saving Club held its first nipper registration day on Sunday, September 13.

The Tackers are very happy with the registrations of both returning nippers and those who are new to the nipper movement.

Water Superintendent Matt Horton is excited about the upcoming 2015/2016 nipper season.

“The warmer weather is here now and all kids love to have a play in the surf,” he said.

“We provide a safe environment for all

nippers to enjoy that part of it, but nippers at Tacking Point has a very strong surf education component. We love our ‘nipps’ to have fun primarily, but also to learn about their immediate environment and how and what to do in different circumstances.”
