It’s Xmas all year ... for a caring community By CHRISTINA PARKIN CHRISTMAS is a time of giving, but there is little doubt the Christmas spirit burns brightly throughout the Hastings region all year. As the big, jolly guy with the beard does his rounds we have been reminded that as a community we deserve to take a bow for being generous and genuinely caring for the people and environment around us. “This is one of the most generous communities I have been involved with,” said Major Brett Gallagher from the Salvation Army. “As things get tighter, the community seems to find more ways of giving. We had the most successful Red Shield Appeal in years and this allows us to focus on local need where local donations also help the local businesses that we buy from to distribute to the less fortunate. “The Christmas Appeal has been wonderfully supported and even the gold coin donations for the Christmas Under the Stars held at Westport raised over $4,500 alone.” As individuals we give and we are also surrounded by a caring business community. “Business don’t thrive in a community that doesn’t care for one another,” said businesswoman and Rotarian, Ms Ivana Agapiou. “It makes the Hastings quite unique in the way it supports its community.”
An example of this was how the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce business community got behind the Town Centre Master Plan by contributing an extra levy to ensure the project was completed effectively. Everyday we see local examples of a caring community, such as the Stars of the Hastings Dance for Cancer which raised over $62,000 for the Cancer Council, the CSU paramedic students who held the inaugural red and blue ball and raised over $15,000 to buy six defibrillators for the local area, or the Sand Mudder, RSPCA Million Paws Walk and Healthy Harold’s Halloween fundraiser, to the trading tables conducted by local bowlers to raise money for the Women and Children’s Refuge – these are just a few of the many initiatives that abound in our community. The work done by volunteers to complete the re-beautification of Mrs York’s Garden; Gaol Point by the Lions Club; Rotary House, Rotary Park, Stewart Street Headland and the Lighthouse by Rotary; planter boxes lining High Street, Wauchope – again, some of the projects which enhance the facilities provided by our local council to make our area attractive to both residents and visitors. Well done! From everyone at Your Local Independent newspaper – have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
