IT’S time to grab the Aussie flag, anything blue and red you can lay your hands on, and get set to celebrate all that being an Australian means.

The fun kicks off on Sunday, January 25, with the announcement of Australia Day-awards nominees and overall award winners at a special free event at 6.30pm in the Glasshouse theatre in Port Macquarie.

Free-camping revolt:

‘Save our parks’

A PORT Macquarie group has hit back at pro-free-camping comments made by Cr Sharon Griffiths in the Inside Council column of the Independent on January 8.

Andrew Crane from Save Our Parks said he was a member of a growing group of hundreds of residents concerned about council’s current management of our parks.

“We are deeply concerned by Cr Griffiths’ Inside Council piece,” Mr Crane said.

“Cr Griffiths points to the imaginary economic benefits of increased RV tourism and presents us with hypothetical figures based on a town monumentally different to Port Macquarie and council’s recent survey of people staying illegally in our parks.

“To council every van in an LGA park seems to represent dollar bills, when in reality many vans house people living in urban parks in squalor, without necessary services.”

Mr Crane said most campers were law-abiding decent people, but the lack of services for them put them, the community and the economy in jeopardy.

“Our group supports camping and acknowledges the importance of tourism,” he said.

“However, permitting people to live in our urban parks, next to playgrounds without adequate monitoring, without needledisposal facilities, without sanitary item and contaminated waste disposal and without consideration of environmental impacts is not in the interests of anybody, no matter how much imaginary money it might make.”

Mr Crane said council had a clear responsibility to provide the infrastructure and ongoing monitoring and maintenance to support free-camping if they wanted to extend it.

“We are deeply concerned that council is considering increasing the strain on existing facilities without first fixing current issues,” he said.

Mr Crane added his group was running a petition, calling on council to give rangers back their authority to issue infringements and to better monitor who is living in our urban parks.

“Concerned readers are urged to sign the petition in support for ‘Kids Safe Parks’ and to join our community Facebook page,” he said.

MAYOR Peter Besseling said council was proactively seeking the best outcomes for community, businesses and tourists by gathering more information about campers to develop a longterm management strategy to address the emerging tourism trend.

“The ‘freedom camper’ tourism market segment includes RVs and non self-contained vans/vehicles that have camping and bedding facilities inside such as the Jucy, Wicked and Traveller’s Autobarn rental vehicles,” he said.

“Many councils have similar challenges with campers along the east coast and manage the trend in diverse ways unique to environment and community.”

Cr Besseling said council staff were in the final stages of research which began in September 2014.

“A researcher has been surveying freedom campers around the region to identify their habits, needs and spending patterns,” he said.

“Council is also surveying the attitudes and perceptions of other users of the public spaces and nearby residents to gain a community perspective.

“This information will inform councillors, who will be considering the approach to camping in public spaces at the March council meeting.”

In addition to the survey, the mayor said council was trialling signage and brochures.

“The signs highlight council’s resolution to prohibit camping on reserves, roads and roadrelated areas and have a QR code that directs campers to a ‘Where to Camp’ brochure on portmacquarieinfo.com.au,” he said.

“The brochure informs tourists and provides

a list of where people can camp in our region including caravan parks and camping sites.

“For those who have evidence of damage to or use of our public spaces I encourage them to use the ‘Snap Send Solve’ app to notify council or to call 6581 8111 to alert us to the issue.

“We can’t be everywhere at all times but if the community notifies us of issues then we can take action.

“We are also aware there is an independent social media site concerning illegal drug use and other activities in our local parks. This is a separate issue and if community members see evidence of these behaviours, I encourage them to notify the police.”

A PORT Macquarie real estate agent has started a petrol fuel watch site to put more pressure on service station operators to lower prices.

Steve Davis from PRD Nationwide said he had had an overwhelming response since he started the page - Port Macquarie Fuel Watch – Official – at 8pm last Tuesday night.

He already had more than a 1000 likes within a day or so and by 11am on Tuesday this had jumped to 2387.

Petrol prices had also dropped to under the 130c mark, but whether this was because of media coverage and the site or just service station operators passing on the drop in the price of world fuel was unknown.

Mr Davis said there were three necessary phases for the Facebook page to generate the sort of downward pressure on prices he hoped for.

“The first is that people pull over and take photos of petrol board signs and post them,” he said.

“The second is that people use the site to find the best price and act on it.

“The third is that we have the numbers to make this effective – I would guess at least 5000 or 10,000 people.”

Mr Davis said he was prompted to take action after watching fuel prices in Port Macquarie for the past 10 years.

“We keep hearing about the ACCC is going to do something, or the state government or the federal government, but nothing has happened,” he said.

“I decided maybe we needed to tackle the problem at a community level.”

Solving our water woes HAVING worked at the Sydney Water Board for over 38 years before moving to Port Macquarie more than 17 years ago, I have been interested in the water supply system that operates in the Port district.

The ideal system anywhere would involve a storage dam on a nearby river, with a large catchment area within which no development of any nature would be allowed, to provide a sufficient supply of clean water to meet the present and future needs of the area involved at all times, without restrictions.

Unfortunately this is not the situation that exists at present in Port where we rely on water having to be pumped from the flow of the Hastings River to two dams, namely the older one in Rosendahl Reserve within the residential area of Port, and the newer Cowarra dam out towards Wauchope, both of which are really no more than reservoirs with virtually no catchment areas. The problem is that filling of these two reservoirs with water to cater for the district’s needs from the river is only possible when the river flow is just right, and this only happens on a very limited number of days in any year. This is because pumping cannot occur in dry periods when the river level is too low, and for a substantial period after any rain when the turbidity in the river is too great as a result of run-off from development and debris picked up upstream.

Over the time I have been in Port, there has been very little time, if any, that no restrictions on the use of water has applied, particularly with very dry periods and in summer with the increased tourist population. I am concerned that the substantial amount of new residential and some industrial development, in a number of new locations throughout the district, that are just starting or proposed in the near future, will result in an obvious worsening of the water supply to all areas. The fact is that we have no idea when pumping from the river will actually be able to done, how long it will be possible for, and how much water will be involved, which means that even at present we have no guarantee there will be sufficient water ever to supply the existing development without restrictions, let alone further development.

In view of this I suggest it is irrational to allow any further property development, now and in the future, while there is nothing more than the existing water supply system available to rely on.

RE the current debate over petrol prices and my comments on the front page last week.

I owned one service station in Port between 1990 and 1997 and prior to that three stations in Sydney and spent a total of 22 years in the petrol industry.

During my time as a service station proprietor in Port, there were about 10 petrol outlets at that time. Now we have half that amount with a much bigger population. So, in essence, the present service stations have a far greater volume, with a much greater margin per litre.

My average mark-up those days was about 3.5 cents a litre, when freight costs to me were four cents per litre.

Even if freight costs were 10 cents a litre now, the average mark-up would still be about 15 cents a litre on the current price at Shell of $124.7, so please proprietors, explain the rationale behind it all. The barrel price is about $54. When the barrel price was between $110 and $120 the pump

price was approximately between $150.9 and $159.9.

Coincidentally as the tourists are leaving town, the prices have dropped dramatically.

When I left Port for Sydney before Xmas our average price was $147.9. When I filled up in Baulkham Hills the following day, the price I paid was $109.9, of which I have the photos to prove it.

It is high time for someone to put their hands up. Perhaps our local political members should be perusing this problem and getting heads out of the sand and following it through with the ACCC, the toothless tigers who procrastinate too much and nothing happens.

What we need is a consortium of entrepreneurs to purchase an independent site and lead the way in getting a fair price for our fuel.

Endorsing the unknown THE president of the Residents Action Network, John Tingle (Independent, December 18,‘Action group supports council stance on rates’), speaking on behalf of his network, rightly states the high growth and development rate in the Hastings imposes ever-increasing costs on council in new infrastructure and services.

He also rightly indicates council has a dilemma. He acknowledges council pursues growth and development.

The question his network should be asking is why council now pursues growth and development at the expense of

current infrastructure?

Realistically, a word Mr Tingle uses in the article, existing ratepayers, many with fixed incomes, should not have the Residents Action Network give council their blessing to sizeable rate increases. From my experience in local government in another state, the rates fixed for the 2016-2018 years and applications for rate hikes are still in the melting pot.

Being realistic is okay, but to endorse the unknown, especially when it will affect all ratepayers, does not stand scrutiny.

Foreshore saga turns corner

By CAROLINE STRAINIG PORT Macquarie’s foreshore now has more controls in place to avoid unsuitable development.

The state government has adopted the plan of management for the Hastings Regional Crown Reserve Precinct “A” at Port Macquarie.

The move was welcomed by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and Mayor Peter Besseling, who said it was good to see the plan of management finally in place, particularly given the decision last year to abandon the process.

“The finalisation of the plan of management will now allow for the NSW Government to move ahead and call for expressions of interest over the Plaza car-park site, which is of great significance to the Port Macquarie CBD and foreshore,” he said.

Precinct “A” encompasses Crown coastal foreshore lands between Settlement Point and Town Beach and includes the adjacent submerged lands (part of the bed of the Hastings River).

and Water Kevin Humphries and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams made the announcement about the adoption of the plan of management last week, saying the decision followed comprehensive consultation with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and the local community.

“The PoM identifies and promotes Kooloonbung Creek, Plaza car-park, Fisherman’s Wharf and the CBD mooring sites as potential redevelopment opportunities along with a substantial number of other recreational, environmental and other improvements to the precinct,” Mr Humphries said.

Mrs Williams said the PoM would provide sound economic, social and environmental outcomes.

Crown Lands revealed last year it was in the process of selling the Plaza car-park site to Woolworths without putting it through an expressions-of-interest process, a revelation which caused a major public outcry and vehement protests from the council.

EACH year council undertakes a process of mapping the next financial year’s projects and services through creating an overall budget which includes capital works as well as operations. The 2015/2016 budget is now being drafted and input from councillors has been sought.

I provided my budget items wish-list to the relevant staff last week. In coming up with the items I submitted, I took into account which projects, services and improvements many community members had discussed with me over the course of the last year or so. I also am generally aware of potential operational improvements we could make to ensure ratepayer value for money.

For roads and infrastructure, I requested funding of pre-construction activities which include preparing a corridor for University Drive from Greenmeadows to the new CSU campus. I also would like to see Lake Road upgraded to see dual lanes each way from Ocean Drive to Oxley Highway. Another request was to re-seal Ocean Drive through Lake Cathie as the road surface on this major road has been very ordinary for many years now.

I have suggested that we are over-resourcing ‘green’ initiatives such as a proposed very expensive gas capture program at Cairncross as well as multiple climate-change studies or strategies. I’d like to see these projects canned and the ratepayers be returned some money through lower tipping and waste fees. I personally don’t believe local government should be conducting

their own climate-change strategies in isolation from any state or federal government directive or policy.

Other items include not creating any new staffing positions in council until after council’s service review process has been completed and that council also look seriously at asset recycling opportunities to fund major infrastructure requirements.

Recent council practice would see the final draft budget placed on exhibition sometime in March or April and adopted by June, ready for the start of the new financial year. On past experience, it isn’t until the exhibition period that the community are normally afforded the opportunity to input.

I would strongly suggest that any community member, group or organisation wanting to have feedback into the process, do so now and before the final draft. You can do this by lobbying your preferred councillor(s), all of whose contact details are on pmhc.nsw.gov.au

ONE of Australia’s most respected and much loved actors, Henri Szeps OAM, has been named as the region’s new Australia Day Ambassador for 2015 and will attend our local community celebrations on Monday, January 26.

Henri was born in Switzerland in a refugee camp during WWII. He was fostered out at 11 months to a wonderful Lutheran Swiss family who probably saved his life.

After the war was over, he moved around between being with his real mother in Paris, the foster family in Switzerland and a couple of orphanages before coming out to Australia with mother, step-father and sister.

He graduated in Science and

My Place is really ace LAST Thursday evening more than 200 people gathered to watch the official #myplace short film premiere at the Hay Street forecourt outside the Glasshouse and cheer the announcement of the five winners.

THE Friends of Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park spent over 15 volunteer hours working on the park’s gazebo last week to remove graffiti and repair vandalism.

Working bee regulars Dave Comish and Rex and Janice Moir were joined by Janet Watson and Jacinta and Hugh Sharp for the task of cleaning, repairing and repainting the popular timber gazebo. Work also had to be done on the Friends’ tool shed and stairway to the historic cemetery to remove graffiti.

Jacinta and Hugh Sharp are the youngest Friends members and got out of bed early during the school holidays to help at the working bee. Their efforts will be rewarded with volunteer hours towards their high school community service award for 2015.

Friends group vice president Janet Watson said she was disappointed the job of cleaning up these public areas was left to volunteer members.

“I would like to see any juvenile offenders encouraged by their parents and the authorities to participate in the removal of these tags, by working with community groups such as Friends of Kooloonbung and Port Macquarie Landcare to restore vandalised structures and signs to their former state,” she said.

Ms Watson congratulated Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on the new Graffiti Buster program and said the Friends of Kooloonbung Creek were looking forward to a zero-tolerance approach.

THE search is on for local women who ‘Make It Happen’ in our local community, as part of the annual Hastings Heroines event to be held on Friday, March 6 to celebrate International Women’s Day 2015.

The Hastings Business Women’s Network (HBWN) and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams MP are calling on the community to help them unearth some of our region’s unsung heroines.

HBWN president Karen Archer said the Hastings Heroines awards honour inspirational women who have made significant contributions in our local community.

“The theme for International Women’s Day 2015 is ‘Make It Happen’ so the awards this year will honour women who have encouraged effective action in advancing and recognising women,” Ms Archer said.

“We’re searching for women who have played an important role in a number of areas including greater awareness for women’s equality, women in senior leadership roles, growth of women-owned businesses, equal recognition for women in the arts, increased financial independence of women, more women in science,

engineering and technology, and fairer recognition for women in sport.”

Mrs Williams said it was important to use the opportunity to acknowledge local women who had made a significant difference in our community.

How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie?

I have lived in Port Macquarie for 15 months, and previously lived in Laurieton prior to that. My partner and I relocated to the area from Adelaide in April 2012.

We wanted to raise our little family closer to family.

Our parents live in Laurieton and Sydney so this is a happy medium.

What do you love most about the Hastings?

I love that on my four-minute commute to work each morning I get to experience the most beautiful beaches.

I love the food, the wine and the coffee that this region produces and I really love how community minded the whole area is and the weather. The Hastings is also a great place to raise our young family.

Where do you work and what do you love most about your work?

I work at Majestic Cinemas in Port Macquarie, in the role as marketing and operations manager. I have been with the cinema since early 2013 and have loved every single day of it. I love that I get to bring people entertainment - and take them away from their lives for two hours. I also love the fantastic people I get to meet - there are some serious film buffs in this town. I’m really excited to be a part of the cinema’s transformation and can’t wait for all the festivals and events coming to Majestic Cinemas this year.

What do you like least about your work?

Burnt popcorn has to be the most unpleasant thing in the world - and I have been known to burn more than one batch!

How do you start your day?

Coffee, coffee and more coffee – then the frantic scrambling to get my two children out the door to school and childcare begins.

What do you do in your spare time?

Most of my spare time is spent with my amazing kids. As a family we love our little mystery adventures around the Hastings, fishing and exploring. I always find time to read though. I have so many books in my house that they are starting to take over.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

My two children are obviously my greatest achievement, but our biggest achievement as a family would have to have been the 1800km move we undertook from Adelaide to the Camden Haven.

Professionally-speaking, I am also proud to have had a small hand in marketing some of the great alternate content that Majestic Cinemas is now bringing to Port Macquarie. I love that people are finally getting to enjoy film festivals, MET Opera Performances and National Theatre Live productions at the cinema.

How do you like your coffee?

Strong and never-ending!

What makes your day?

My kids. They are the best little examples of what life is meant to be about.

Called Sun, sea, and stories, beachgoers can borrow books and magazines – no library card or registration required. All the library requests is that the books are returned to the shelf or any branch library in Port Macquarie, Wauchope or Laurieton.

The service has also been running successfully for a number of years from Port Macquarie Airport and aims to not only provide beachgoers with a selection of great books over summer, but to also acquaint residents and visitors with the services on offer at Port Macquarie-Hastings libraries.

Going easy on Auld Lang Syne

WHO was that lady I saw you with last night?

That was no lady; that was my wife.

Okay, you’ve heard that one.

But if you’re trying to forget that fling you had with that person down the street you had better go easy on Auld Lang Syne.

Perhaps you can simply hum the tune while others are singing it with gusto.

Of all the questions I have received about words during the past 12 months Auld Lang Syne was among the leaders.

Everybody sings it but few understand what it means.

It was not a composition of Robert Burns, although Burns had a hand in it.

I was reading an article from Scotland recently where somebody wanted to create a world record by having many people sing Auld Lang Syne. The article said it was Robert Burns’ most famous poem.

He had a hand in the modern song, but a 17th century poem that has long been forgotten read: Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never thought upon, The flames of love extinguished, And freely past and gone.

Is thy kind heart now grown so cold In that loving breast of thine, That thou canst never once reflect On old-long-syne?”

As the years wore on people seemed to put their own interpretation on the words.

The three words of the song should not be looked at independently.

Auld is an old Scottish way of saying old.

My big dictionary says lang means long (a word which takes up eight pages of my big dictionary, so excuse me if I have missed a few meanings).

One of the many meanings of syne is “before now” or ago.

Burns in 1796 wrote “lang syne” in an entirely different context. Several other authors wrote of syne in an entirely different context, such as “he was here a minute syne”.

But you shouldn’t read the words of Auld Lang Syne independently.

Take it to mean something like “let us all be friends, for the sake of old times”.

The story that has come to us through the ages is that Robert Burns wrote down a much older Scottish song, put his own words to some of it, and then sent it off to a person collecting old Scottish songs. Burns said the song Auld Lang Syne had never been in print, “nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man”.

Auld Lang Syne is often sung to mark the end of one year or at the departure of old friends.

Some say Guy Lombardo is credited with reviving it in 1929.

So far as I can tell, the song that we now know comprises six verses.

The first verse is: Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne.

The chorus is: For days of long ago, my dear, for days of long ago, we’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for days of long ago.

The final verse is: And there’s a hand my trusty friend, And give us a hand o’ thine, And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne.

Some versions have different words, and older poems since discovered tell a different story altogether.

You could suggest it means something like “forget you saw me with a blonde the other night”.

After Peter’s funeral, his children were dismayed to hear that - the marriage revoked Peter’s will; - Mary would inherit the family home and the bulk of Peter’s investments and superannuation; and - Mike had to move out and live with his elder sister and her family while waiting for public housing.

Mike contested the will but after more than $100,000 in legal fees, Mary still kept the bulk of Peter’s estate (which she then left to her own children). Peter’s other children got nothing.

EVE made a Will leaving her entire estate to her husband Tom and to their children if Tom died before her. Tom eventually remarried (to Susan) but after 10 years Susan left him. Half of Eve’s estate ended up in Susan’s pocket. Tom had to sell the family home to pay the Family Law settlement and moved in with his daughter.

BILL died, leaving everything to his 3 children equally. Bill’s son Geoff, a single father of 3 young children, still had 1 year to go on his bankruptcy after his plumbing business had failed. Geoff’s entire share was taken by his bankruptcy trustee to pay off his tax debt and other creditors. Geoff was left with nothing from his father’s estate.

WITH warmth, compassion and dark humour, To Sleep shows how relationships can develop between different people no matter how appalling their shared experiences might be.

The play opens in an A&E waiting room with two people, who have almost nothing in common. One is a girl in her late teens, the other a middle-aged man. Neither of them seems comfortable being there until they find out that they’re both there for the same reason - suicide gone wrong. This leads to the two talking and deciding to help each other finish the job; a decision which causes an unexpectedly beautiful relationship to start to build.

To Sleep explores how people deal with the most difficult human situations. Matt Fox’s tenderly written 90-minute script - which focuses on two heartbroken individuals at their lowest point - is a powerful production of tragedy, trauma, regret, life and friendship.

To Sleep has already toured in the UK including Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and the West End in London. The play will also be produced in New York in March 2015. It makes its Australian debut at the Glasshouse, directed by Adrian Davis.

The minimal set will allow the audience to focus on the two characters and the intense relationship that forms. The ending of this dark comic play will have you thinking for a very long time.

Don’t be deterred by the uncomfortable subject matter.

Undeniably, To Sleep is heartbreaking, but its tenderness makes it thoroughly watchable. It is tragic but beautiful.

To Sleep is on at the Glasshouse on Tuesday, February 3 at 8pm and is suitable for mature audiences 16+.

Moonlight Movies back GIG GUIDE MOONLIGHT Movies are back again this month and you’re invited to spend the evening watching a free film under the stars at Lake Cathie and Port Macquarie.

One down but show will go on UK SINGER/SONGWRITER Sam York has announced he will not be travelling to Australia to partake in the Upside Down tour. Sam has been diagnosed with a medical condition that prevents him leaving the UK at this time.

The Upside Down tour will continue without him with the three other band members – Lachlan Bryan, Aleyce Simmonds and Jack Henderson.

The Upside Down Tour is a uniquely collaborative musical event. The diverse artists share the stage for the entire performance with their skills as multi-instrumentalists employed to create a band sound that defies classification.

Each artist’s songs are twisted inside out and upside down as they are interpreted by their fellow performers, creating a sound that is at once spontaneous, experimental and mesmerising.

While each individual is an acclaimed songwriter in his or her own right, the whole is even greater than the sum of its parts.

With song-writing styles likened to Tom Waits and Elvis Costello (Jack Henderson), Bob Dylan/ Gram Parsons (Lachlan Bryan) and Emmylou Harris/Jewel (Aleyce Simmonds), this show is bound to please, surprise and inspire music lovers with its diverse and collaborative nature.

They will be performing at the Glasshouse on January 27 at 7pm.

At Douglas Vale THE volunteers at the Douglas Vale historic homestead and vineyard in Port Macquarie held an open day on Saturday.

Hundreds of people flocked to see the 150-year-old homestead, taste the wines, find treasures on the trading tables and enjoy their renowned Devonshire teas.

The homestead is open three days a week on a regular basis, but will also stage another major open day on Saturday, April 18 as part of the NSW Heritage Festival.

Richard Clapton will be performing at the Laurieton United Services Club

ONE of Australia’s foremost singer/songwriters will be performing at the Laurieton United Services Club tomorrow night.

Richard Clapton paved the way for three generations of songwriters to write about the experience of being Australian.

When he began his recording career in 1974, Australia was still in a vice-like grip of the cultural cringe. He plunged into the deep water and in his wake followed the Skyhooks and Paul Kelly, Cold Chisel, INXS, Midnight Oil and hundreds of others.

Songs like Deep Water and Capricorn Dancer are touchstones on the Aussie rock landscape, without which we wouldn’t really know who we are or where we’re going.

The singer is now in his 40th year since his first album, Prussian Blue, but shows no signs of slowing down. He has released over 20 albums which have cumulatively sold over one million copies. He is the only rock artist to have received an Australia Council arts grant from the government which enabled him to travel around the world and write the songs for Goodbye Tiger.

Harlequin Nights is his first album in six years and has been written and recorded over four years. After

Check This Out almost 40 years of honing his craft, this is arguably his finest album and shows that he is now at the peak of his powers. Some of the songs are simply “classic Clapton”, but there is also an ample serving of less predictable and innovative material – the combination that has made his albums famous.

During the album’s long gestation, Clapton has endured a marriage breakdown, taking him on a personal journey which influenced his continuing musical evolution, culminating with a new relationship with his home studio and a songwriting partnership with guitarist Danny Spencer.

But survive he has, with a tale to tell.

BOWLS Round-Up WESTPORT MEN’S

Another positive pennant trial last Saturday: with six teams entered this year Westport is looking for good results.

Australia Day on Monday has mufti triples – men, women or mixed – 10am start then a barbecue for $10. Put your name down please.

Apart from that it will be the regular social bowls programme this week. Triples Friday and Tuesday afternoons, Pairs on Wednesday. OK, OK!! I’ve been told that the dress code entry last week was misleading. All social games at Westport are mufti but you can wear club gear if you want, or a combination of mufti and club clothing. The important thing is a collared shirt and neat shorts or slacks for all social games. Game sheets are in the Dolphin Lounge and visitors always welcome on what we think are “the best greens in Port”.

Green fees $8. Loan bowls and short term locker hire available.

PORT CITY MEN’S

Dress code for social bowls is club uniform/ creams or smart casual, with collared shirt, neat shorts/slacks. The first pennant trial was held on Saturday, January 17 and by all reports was very successful, with the selectors and assistants taking copious notes. Chairman of selectors addressed bowlers prior to the start and outlined the various rule changes that apply to pennants

in 2015. The next pennant trial is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, with grades 5-7 at 3pm, followed by a barbecue at 5pm and grades 1-4 starting at 6pm.

The draw is on the board for the men’s triples championship with the first round to be played on Tuesday, February 3. Entries are open for the fours and will close Saturday, February 7 at 5pm.

On January 14 a representative from the oncology department was on hand to accept a cheque for $2000 dollars courtesy of the wrong bias tin.

Don’t forget bowls on Australia Day, January 26. Triples, mixed, mens, ladies. Cost is $45 per team and includes lunch. 9.30 start with morning tea.

Sheet is on the board for the test between Australia and the rest of the world grudge match on Saturday, January 31. There will be a barbecue at 12. Should be lots of fun. You will have noticed on your cards this week a number “team handicap” and a number beside each player. There is a handicap system based on your pennant grading with adjustment. The handicaps do not apply at the moment, but Paul is fine-tuning the system ready for when handicap events start after pennant.

Social bowls were well attended with nearly 90 bowlers playing on each day with the half green being used.

Peter Madden, Kev Thompson and Eddie “Merlot” King were the winners in the Thursday afternoon social bowls. The runners up were Max Lynch, Ray Mace and Pedro Bruno Gill. Gerard Grovenor and Reg Player were the winners in the Saturday afternoon social bowls.

Thursday is Men’s Triples, Saturday is Mixed Triples, Tuesday is Men’s Pairs – all casual dress with a 1pm start. Nominations are now open for our Major Singles.

An in-house pennant trial will be held Saturday, January 24 commencing at 12.30pm and all players are asked to indicate their availability for this trial as soon as possible. A pennant trial will also be held on Saturday, February 14 against Westport and the 1st men’s Interclub Day for 2015 will be held at Westport on Sunday, February 15.

At last the Thursday jackpot of $330 went off; Keith Miller and Ron Campbell led two very happy teams as the right number came up. Thursday’s jackpot, though, is still alive; $200 with numbers 1-5. Birthday boys. But first, an apology to Bill Metcalfe whose big day came up last week, but unfortunately didn’t make the press. Last Friday saw temperature over the 30s with high humidity, but what did we see at 4pm - 6 rinks of trebles taking part in what has become an institution. Bill Stewart’s “Fabulous Friday” where a mixture of experienced bowlers, social players and those having their initial try out enjoy their bowls in a great atmosphere, driven along by Bill’s offers of vouchers on club products for successful participants in a range of bowling successes. For newcomers, bare feet or thongs and of course any form of clothing are all you need with an entry fee of $9 to have a great afternoon. At game’s end, a special bowlers’ $7 meal, rounds out your afternoon. Club bowlers, how about introducing non-bowling friends to the noble sport; bring them to Fabulous Friday!

HASTINGS HAVEN

Hastings Haven District championships for 2015 have now begun. 26 teams competed in the Open and Senior Fours championships on Wednesday and Thursday, January 14 and 15, with matches played at Hibbard Sports Club and the Westport Club. Despite the weather being hot, humid, windy and occasionally very wet, some outstanding bowls were played.

Both the Open and Senior competitions were keenly contested with teams from Port City, Westport, Hibbard Sports, Lake Cathie, North Haven, Kew and Wauchope taking part.

Congratulations to the Port City Club, whose teams won all places in the finals of both competitions.

In the Open Fours, the Port City team of Debbie Amor, Carol Bowman, Barbara Barrett and Judy Brady defeated the team of Hazel Durrant, Robyn Hehir, Marion Miller and Valda Bott. In the Senior Fours, the Port City team of Margaret Walsh, Pat Light, Lyn Zahra and Shirley Devine came out the winners over Jennifer Munson, Norma Schwartz, Rhonda Evans and Jan Opitz.

Both matches were highly entertaining and the skills displayed were most appreciated by the enthusiastic group of spectators.

Congratulations and sincere thanks to all who took part, especially our host clubs, umpires and the District committee, without whom these competitions could not be conducted.

Racing back on deck Sailing club hosts a double-header PORT Macquarie Sailing Club had a double header on Sunday with race 3 of the summer series, a barbecue lunch, and then the 4th club championship race.

This was good to see after the Christmas break, a very small fleet for race 1 of the summer series, and then no wind last week. The morning summer series race was sailed in an easy but a bit patchy southerly breeze with the start of the run out tide, but the breeze strengthened for the afternoon club championship race as the run-out tide continued.

The morning race for the catamarans was quite uneventful, with Tony Kuhn on Stella winning on both yardstick and handicap. Ron Apps in his first race on his new trimaran Kimbo 3 was second in both point scores, and Dave Winter on Spica, third.

The morning race for the monohulls was also rather uneventful and a rather delightful sail. Incredibly, as in the catamarans, the yardstick and handicap results were the same. Terry Howard on Ratz sailed very well to take the wins, followed by Simon, Elsa, and Dale Gandy on

Voyager, Kelly Miller on Devocean, Stuart Symons and Jeff Walsh on Blue Goose, Tony Walker on Deep Purple, and Rob Barwick on Magic.

After the barbecue lunch, the fleet numbers dwindled a little because Tony Kuhn and Kelly Miller were on duty.

The afternoon club championship race for the catamarans was a two-boat race. Spica won on both yardstick and handicap, and Kimbo 3 was second.

The club championship race for the monohulls saw Ratz continue his good day for the yardstick win, followed by a well sailed Deep Purple. Despite breaking a tiller extension, capsizing, and getting the mast stuck in the mud on the river bottom at about half race, Blue Goose soldiered on to take third ahead of Magic. Voyager broke a bottom rudder pintle and had to retire. On handicap, Deep Purple had sailed well enough to take the win, followed by Ratz, Blue Goose, and Magic.

Next Sunday is race 4 of the summer series with a handicap start starting at 2pm. Norman Broomhall is rostered on duty.

Port ninth in surf life-saving titles

PORT Macquarie finished ninth in the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships held over the weekend at Mollymook.

Twelve hundred athletes from 33 clubs competed in the three-day surfing carnival, which was hosted by Shoalhaven City Council and Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club together.

In what was a tight competition, defending champions Byron Bay SLSC took the lead on the last morning of the carnival, finishing with 893 points. Warilla Barrack Point SLSC came in at second place and Cudgen Headlands SLSC took the third spot.

The championship hosts finished at a highly credible fourth place, while Shellharbour SLSC came in at fifth.

Port Macquarie finished in 9th place with 255 points.

Boaties reminded to ‘toe the line’

BOATERS are reminded to follow the rules when towing someone behind their boat.

Towing safety on NSW waterways is in the spotlight over summer with a Roads and Maritime Services education and compliance campaign. Operation Tow Safe.

Roads and Maritine Acting Director of Maritime Adrian Toovey said boating safety officers around NSW would focus on boat operators engaged in towing activities to check awareness and compliance with safety requirements.

“Waterskiing, wakeboarding and aquaplaning are all marine towing activities and are popular water sports which generally take place at relatively high speeds,” Mr Toovey said.

“Operators are reminded there is an element of risk and it is crucial anyone involved understands what is required to ensure the safety of all participants.

“Everyone from the observer to the person driving the boat must know the rules, including key hand signals.

“The person being towed and anyone in the water near a boat also needs to be aware of the potential risk of propellor strikes.”
