Tout juste sacrée championne du monde d’Arena polo en Argentine, la France s’apprête à accueillir de très grands champions internationaux pour la vingt-troisième édition de l’Open de France avec dix-huit équipes et quatorze des quarante meilleurs joueurs du monde qui se retrouveront à Chantilly

à partir du 1er septembre.

L’Open de France est un pilier du haut niveau français au même titre que la Coupe d’or de Deauville ou l’International Polo Cup de Saint-Tropez.

Depuis sa création, il contribue au rayonnement du polo français à travers le monde en attirant les meilleurs joueurs du monde mais également les meilleurs chevaux basés en Europe.

Having won the Arena Polo World Championship in Argentina, France is preparing to welcome some of the world’s greatest champions to the 23rd edition of the Open de France, with eighteen teams and fourteen of the world’s top forty players set to meet in Chantilly from September 1st.

The Open de France is a pillar of French top-level polo, on a par with the Coupe d’Or in Deauville and the International Polo Cup in Saint-Tropez.

Since its creation, it has contributed to the worldwide reputation of French polo, attracting not only the world’s best players, but also the best horses based in Europe.

Les matchs que nous propose l’Open de France depuis vingt-trois ans ont régulièrement prouvé cet adage. Comme le souligne et le confirme Marcos Araya qui jouera cette année pour La Berta : « Ce qui rend l’Open de France si différent, c’est ce mélange de compétition et de bonnes vibrations, parce qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de tournois de nos jours où l’on partage des repas, des barbecues et d’autres moments de ce genre »… Ainsi, l’équipe du Polo Club s’efforce chaque année de cultiver ce sens de l’accueil, de recevoir chevaux et joueurs ainsi que leurs entourages dans les meilleures conditions. Les récents événements climatiques ont démontré que la nature a besoin d’arbres. Par grande chaleur, les chevaux ont besoin d’ombre rafraichissante lorsque, une fois leur chukker terminé, ils reviennent au palenque.

Il n’est pas toujours évident de rester concentré sur un spectacle sportif qui se tient sur un immense terrain couvrant plus de quatre fois la surface de celle d’un terrain de foot : deux-cent-soixante-quinze mètres par cent-quarante-cinq, soit quatre hectares ! Les choses deviennent plus évidentes, partant de l’hypothèse que l’on aura compris qu’il s’agit, pour les quatre joueurs de chaque équipe, de marquer le plus de buts possible (appelés goals en polo où, question règlement, tout est anglicisé), lorsque l’on connaîtra quelques bases. Des principes qui peuvent tenir en quatre mots ou presque : changements, arbitres, ligne et pénalités.

Du 1er au 17 septembre, Chantilly accueille cet événement majeur qu’est l’Open de France de polo. Au-delà de l’Oise, c’est tous les Hauts-de-France qui vont célébrer ce sport.

Un sport atypique, chargé d’histoire, et qui va trouver à l’occasion de cet Open toute sa reconnaissance. Assurément, c’est un rendez-vous prestigieux qui se profile au Domaine de Chantilly et qui valorise tout le travail mené en ce sens - et tout au long de l’année - par le Polo Club, ses dirigeants, ses salariés et bénévoles.

La Région Hauts-de-France est particulièrement fière de pouvoir s’associer à ce moment qui mettra en lumière à la fois la performance sportive des cavalières et cavaliers, le suspense des confrontations dans des épreuves palpitantes et âprement disputées, mais aussi ce qui se trouve au fondement de cette noble discipline, à savoir l’histoire reliant l’homme au cheval.

Aux participants comme aux spectateurs que l’on espèrera évidemment très nombreux tout au long des trois semaines de compétition, nous souhaitons un très bel Open de France de polo 2023.

From September 1-17, Chantilly is set to host France’s major polo competition: the French Open. Beyond the Oise Region, the entire Hauts-de-France will be celebrating this sport. ​It’s a unique sport, steeped in history, and one that will experience its highest prestige at this Open. The Domaine de Chantilly is undoubtedly the setting for a distinguished event that will showcase all of the hard work put in throughout the year by the Polo Club, its directors, employees, and volunteers. ​The Hauts-de-France Region is particularly proud to be associated with this event, which will highlight both the performance of the athletes and the intensity of the battles in the thrilling and fiercely fought matches, but also what lies at the heart of this noble discipline, namely the history connecting man and horse.

We wish the participants and spectators, who we hope will turn out in large numbers throughout the three weeks of competition, a great 2023 French Polo Open.

J.B : J’ai commencé avec mon frère et ma sœur dans le poney club du North Cotswold. Ensuite, j’ai progressé dans le polo pour adultes avec la famille Hanbury.

Quel a été votre meilleur handicap et quand ?

J.B : Mon meilleur handicap était de 7. J’ai été 7 goals en Argentine et en Angleterre pendant plus de 10 ans d’affilée.

Je suis repassée H3 en Angleterre il y a environ 4 ans et je suis toujours à 4 en Nouvelle-Zélande. Je suis passée H10 dès que les handicaps féminins ont été introduits.

What was your best handicap and when (mixed and women)?

N.C: I went up to 4 goals in 2006, I think, when my team and I won with an all-female team a mixed national 8-goal tournament that had 36 teams entered. It was the first time in history that an all-female team had entered an HPA 8-goal tournament, and we won it! I went down to 3 goals in England about 4 years ago and I am still 4 goals in New Zealand. When the women’s handicaps were introduced, I went straight to 10 goals in the female handicap system.

C’est un endroit inattendu et encore trop méconnu dont pourront profiter les participants du 23ème Open de France à l’occasion du dîner officiel de cette édition exceptionnelle : le Potager des Princes. Situé au cœur de Chantilly, ce site historique (créée par André Le Nôtre au 17ème siècle) à la fois charmant et spectaculaire, a été transformé cette année en un véritable jardin japonais. Ce projet ambitieux a été réalisé par Yves et Annabel Bienaimé*, créateurs du Potager des Princes avec l’aide de leur jardinier en chef Teddy Chesneau.

Ce jardin japonais nouvellement créé est le plus diversifié de France en termes d’espèces de plantes et d’arbres japonais présents en un seul et même endroit. Le jardin et le potager occupent plus d’un hectare de terrain (sur les trois du parc), notamment autour d’un étang sur lequel passe un pont japonais traditionnel. Près de 450 espèces de vivaces japonaises ont été ainsi plantées, 70 arbres jeunes, certains déjà présents, et plus de 720 arbustes.

POLITO ULLOA : LA RÉVOLUTION DU DÉBOURRAGE PAR LA DOUCEUR POLITO ULLOA: A NEW APPROACH TO BREAKING IN HORSES

Carlos Maria Ulloa, alias Polito, connu pour être le père du handicap 10 Hilario Ulloa est avant tout le domador (dresseur) de chevaux le plus respecté d’Argentine.

Il a développé une méthode de dressage révolutionnaire basée sur des approches douces et une communication approfondie avec les chevaux. C’est grâce à ces techniques qu’il a été le premier à monter Cuartetera, la célèbre jument d’Adolfo Cambiaso qui vient de disparaître mais qui aura marqué l’histoire.

Carlos Maria Ulloa, alias Polito, known as the father of 10-goaler Hilario Ulloa, is above all the most respected domador (horse trainer) in Argentina. He has developed a revolutionary training method based on gentle approaches and deep communication with horses.

Thanks to these techniques, he was the first to ride Cuartetera, the famous mare of Adolfo Cambiaso, who has made polo history and recently passed away.

Polito est né à Alberdi, dans la province de Buenos Aires, et a grandi dans un environnement rural et urbain. Il a étudié au collège Newman, mais son père, un avocat, voulait qu’il fasse une carrière plus conventionnelle. Cependant, Polito a suivi son propre chemin et est devenu peon de campo (ouvrier agricole) pour se rapprocher de sa passion pour les chevaux. « Le dressage est un travail artisanal qui nécessite une

communication quotidienne avec l’animal, explique Polito.

Au début, le cheval est méfiant et craintif envers les humains, qu’il perçoit comme des prédateurs. Il se sent lui-même en proie.

Il est donc essentiel de démonter ces barrières progressivement, avec patience et calme. C’est le cheval lui-même qui, avec ses attitudes, indique le moment où il est prêt à être monté ».

Polito avait été victime d’un accident grave lors du débourrage d’une jument difficile. Depuis lors, il sait décider si un cheval est prêt à être monté ou non, sans brûler les étapes. Le chemin a été difficile, mais Polito estime que son expérience l’a rendu plus conscient des risques et des dangers liés au débourrage.

Polito was born in Alberdi, in the province of Buenos Aires, and grew up in an environment that is both rural and urban.

He studied at Newman College and his father, a lawyer, wanted him to pursue a more conventional career.

However, Polito followed his own dreams and became a peon de campo (farm worker) to get closer to what he really loved: horses.

“Training is a craft that requires daily communication with the animal.

At first, the horse is wary and fearful of humans, whom it perceives as predators; it feels itself to be a prey. It is therefore essential to dismantle these barriers gradually, with patience and calm.

It is the horse itself that, with its attitudes, indicates when it is ready to be ridden.”

Polito had a serious accident while breaking in a rebellious mare.

Since then, he knows how to decide if a horse is ready to be ridden or not, without cutting corners. It has been a difficult road, but Polito feels that his experience has made him more aware of the risks and dangers involved in breaking a horse.

Voyager en Argentine pour découvrir le summum du polo est une chose incontournable quand on est fan de ce sport. Mais une fois sur ce continent, dans ce pays, il faut aller plus loin et en découvrir les richesses de ses paysages comme la région de Salta au Nord-ouest du pays, à la découverte de montagnes aux couleurs incroyables, d’un désert de sel, de lamas et de coyotes, de gauchos et de villes du bout du monde au fil d’une route improbable, un petit tronçon de la Ruta 40 – un chemin de terre parfois ou un sentier à peine plus large que la voiture à flanc de montagne - qui traverse l’Argentine du Nord au Sud, de la province de La Rioja jusqu’à la Terre de Feu. Un voyage que plusieurs joueurs et membres du club ont fait l’an dernier grâce à George Campana qui connaît parfaitement la région.

Travelling to Argentina to discover the pinnacle of polo is a must if you are a fan of the sport. But once you are on this continent, in this country, you have to go further and discover the richness of its landscapes, such as the Salta region in the north-west of the country with its incredibly colorful mountains, salt desert, llamas and coyotes, gauchos and towns.

Take a trip to the end of the world along this unlikely route, a small section of Ruta 40 - sometimes a dirt road, sometimes a mountainside path barely wider than a car - which crosses Argentina from north to south, from the province of La Rioja to Tierra del Fuego. A trip that several players and club members made last year, thanks to George Campana, who knows the region inside out.

JOUR 1 DAY 1 Première étape, Purmamarca, une petite ville cernée de montagnes colorées, les fameuses Cerros de siete Colores, des maisons basses construites en pierres de couleurs différentes, des boutiques et un marché bigarré de produits andains, une cerveza au charmant bistrot Lo de Mateo et un restaurant typique (Tierra des Colores) : le dépaysement est total. Un petit saut au village voisin de Tilcara (forteresse, musée archéologique et jardin botanique) s’impose.

First stop: Purmamarca, a small town surrounded by colorful mountains, the famous Cerros de Siete Colores, low houses built of different-colored stones, boutiques and a colorful market selling Andean products. Have a cerveza at the charming Lo de Mateo bistro and lunch at a typical restaurant, Tierra des Colores. The change of scenery is complete. A visit to the nearby village of Tilcara (fortress, archaeological museum and botanical garden) is a must.

On croise des gauchos se rendant à cheval à la ville et on entre dans une région viticole, des vignes de Malbec essentiellement, élevées à plus de 2000 m. Cafayate est d’ailleurs une capitale viticole.

Un cheval de polo retourne à sa vie de cheval de troupeau après avoir fait son travail, il en est que moins compliqué.

Née le 3 février 2001 à La Dolfina d’un embryon conçu par l’élevage des… Pieres (par Sportivo et Lambada), elle nous a quitté le 4 mai dernier à l’âge de 22 ans. « Sa perte a été un moment très triste, déclarait Adolfo Cambiaso à Pololine.

Je suis affligé. C’était une génie. C’était Messi et Maradona à la fois.» Que dire de plus ? Elle était l’image idéale du parfait cheval de polo : « C’était une jument docile, facile à soigner, tout le monde pouvait être

She was a genius. She was Messi and Maradona in one. What more can I say?” Indeed, Cuartetera was the very image of the perfect polo horse: «She was a docile mare, easy to look after, anyone could play her. I was lucky enough to see Mia and Poroto play with her, and she is without doubt the best mare I have ridden in my entire career. And, what’s more, she’s been voted into the sport’s Hall of Fame by all 10-goalers.”
