Polo in China is getting back Tang Polo Club China hosted the JJ International Launch Tournament in Anping

Images: ©JJ International

The game was competitive but very fair. Horses and players were in perfect shape, and despite being classified as a low-goal tournament, the level of polo was high and tight. Both teams were rather equally balanced and ambitious, hence the game became very speedy and sportive. The team of Tang Polo Club finally won the tournament with a 12:10 score (6:6 the first day) and received the award from the organizer Justin Jiang, founder of JJ International. Polo became the game of choice for the Chinese elite and was viewed as a form of entertainment rather than a competitive sport. Tang emperors used polo even as a tool of diplomacy.

Nic Roldan for Equitana USA, Photo by Jaime Cabrera

Leading American Polo Player Nic Roldan has a passion not only for his sport and the horses in it, but also for working together with the equestrian world as a whole and collectively promoting it. Having long followed EQUITANA (originally established in Europe in 1972), Nic was all to aware of its reputation and the possibilities it offers to polo and as such he jumped at the chance to be part of the inaugural EQUITA taking place in Lexington, KY’s Horse Park, between the 1st and 3rd of October 2021. EQUITANA USA is the premier North American forum that promotes the exchange of ideas, information and experiences to enhance the horse and the equine industry. All while providing a high-quality event for those with a passion for horses. The three-day celebration of the horse invited equestrian professionals and enthusiasts of all riding levels and ages, disciplines, and breeds to gather for education, entertainment, instruction and shopping. Nic was quoted as saying that he “…was excited

An Exclusive Interview with Polo Player

Mark Tomlinson In this exclusive interview, Mark Tomlinson talks about his passion for polo and his latest relationship with British equestrian brand Glaze & Gordon

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you start your career? Professional Player Mark Tomlinson

"I started playing polo at a very young age. I would say I was born into a polo family or even a dynasty (as the Beaufort Polo Club). My Grandfather played, my dad played, my mum played, and I was the youngest of three, so it was all kind of laid out for me, and it was a pretty perfect introduction and the ideal setting for a kid that loved horses and loved polo which I did."

You have an exciting new relationship with Glaze & Gordon, tell us about the project you have worked on?

"The relationship with Glaze & Gordon is very much an equestrian relationship based on genuine equestrian principles. We met at Olympia Horse Show, which is one of the big equestrian events in the sporting calendar, and I suppose it is two different equestrian ideologies - one kind from hunting, jumping and racing background from Glaze & Gordon and using that expertise and experience and adding it to polo."

Photography: Joss Ridley

What makes the Traditional Training Breeches you have worked on with Glaze & Gordon, different to others?

"I think the difference between the Glaze & Gordon breeches is that most other traditional polo trousers are made from jeans material. I think the original polo jeans were Levi 501s bought off the shelf. So you have an equestrian purpose-built traditional style breech which is pretty much non-existent in the polo world and only just coming about."

"The motto that I live by, not only in polo but in life, is 'what goes around, comes around.' Or in other words, sport is a great leveller," says Mark Tomlinson

Let's speak about your passion Polo and tell us your personal insider's tip for striking the perfect hit?

"My top tip for a perfect hit, as you call it, would be combining the perfect seat, ie: your riding ability, with the perfect swing. I think if you can have both of those things in place, then you are going to have every chance of creating a perfect hit."

What's the biggest lesson you've learnt in your career?

"The biggest lesson that I have learnt in polo is never to give up, however hard or however easy the task might feel. Never give up and give 100%."

The House’s emblematic codes as well as works created for Dior by the Italian artist Pietro Ruffo are transposed onto fabric through a first essential step, colorization, thanks to the method of pen engraving. The poetic sketches then unfurl on exceptional silk inside the House’s Italian Ateliers, through silkscreen or inkjet printing.

In the next phase, the silks are repeatedly passed through a halo of steam, then washed in successive baths until the ideal look and feel has been achieved. ’My inspiration for the shoot was to think about the way the watch was made and its different materials and then think about how the woman is made, what is part of her personality, wh’at is her character, who she is… fashion has always intrigued me as well in that sense, building your character. I love this idea that people wear part of themselves visually, so the people can show on their bodies what they desire inside’’.

Chanel No 5

Chanel No 5 High Jewellery white-gold and diamond 55.55 necklace (not for sale)

Patrice Leguéreau, director of the Chanel Fine Jewellery Creation Studio, has dreamt of creating a collection around No 5 since he joined the company in 2009.

“I knew that 2021 was an important year, a chance to celebrate the perfume, and so it was a natural move for me to develop the concept of this collection. With each new high-jewellery collection I want to open up the Chanel universe, and the story of No 5 is so rich, so mysterious and fascinating.” The necklace is not for sale and will remain in Chanel’s archive. chanel.com

Chanel No 5. What started as the distillation of Gabrielle Chanel’s spirit has evolved into a cultural icon: it was the scent of Marilyn Monroe, evocative of power and seduction; its instantly recognisable glass bottle was immortalised by Andy Warhol; and it remains a bestseller for the house, despite the everchanging notes of the fragrance world. This year marks the 100th anniversary of No 5, and to celebrate this milestone the maison is uniting two of Chanel’s passions with a high-jewellery collection inspired by the fragrance. It is audacious, in true Chanel spirit, yet there’s an interesting synergy between jewels and perfume – both are intimate and intensely personal, both are worn on the skin and often take on the individual scent or patina of the wearer, and both assume a role that is a mix of personal pleasure and attraction.

Edgardo Osorio

For new release during Salone del Mobile, September 2021: A collaboration between two Italian creative figureheads Andrea Gullo, Director of Officine Gullo, and Edgardo Osorio, founder and Creative Director of the Italian luxury footwear brand Aquazzura, unites the world of fashion with that of design. The meeting led to the creation of a tailor-made kitchen for one of the Osorio residences as well as a capsule collection that will be presented at the next Fuorisalone 2021: a lim- ited-edition series of Officine Gullo hand-painted cooking appliances decorated with the patterns of the new Aquazzura Casa tableware collection. The first chapter of this collaboration is a tailormade kitchen project that represents the perfect encounter between the two spheres. The location is exceptional: Palazzo Corner Spinelli, on the Grand Canal in the San Marco district of Venice.

The residence dates back to the end of the fifteenth century and is characterised by architecture that is representative of the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance in Venetian art, evident by the façade on the canal. An Officine Gullo kitchen was installed on the first floor in Osorio’s apartment, tailormade by the designer, his residence and his brand. Upon discovering Officine Gullo, one of the aspects that most struck Edgardo Osorio was the richness of the colours and the attention to detail curated in Florence. A turquoise kitchen with nickel finishes was created for him. The cooking appliances and refrigera- tion at professional performance level fit perfectly into the environment, characterised by a striped painted parquet floor and hand-decorated walls.

Exotic animals, flowers and brightly coloured trees recall motifs of fine 18th-century Chinese porcelain and transport the observer to an exotic garden and to distant places, as Osorio tells us:

“The initial idea for the kitchen came about after visiting Villa Necchi in Milan. In the villa, there’s a room that features a handpainted winter garden and I immediately fell in love with it. I al- ways wanted to create a kitchen that resembled a living room and to do so I retrieved botanical drawings from the 18th century from which I drew inspiration for the trees and plants I wanted to use, mixing the flora of different seasons of the year.” Osorio’s creativity was supported by Officine Gullo’s tailoring, following the designer’s wishes by forming a one-of-a-kind kitchen just as the Creative Director of Aquazzura had imagined: “During the renovation of my new home in Venice, I was looking for a special kitchen that was truly unique. I’ve never been a big fan of kitchen environments and for this reason I wanted to design one where spending time was a pleasure.

I wanted to reproduce a winter garden that was filled with colour, animals, and trees from different seasons of the year. The walls are all hand painted and Aquazzura’s iconic logo, the pineapple, is featured in the doors and knobs for a whimsical and personal touch. Creating this means the kitchen has truly become the heart of my home.”

The environment was designed to suit Edgardo Osorio’s specific needs, to accommodate special moments spent with family and friends: “I’m used to organising many private events and occasions, and my kitchen is often used for din- ners and lunches with friends who come to visit me in Venice. Gullo kitchens are beautiful, colour- ful, full of unique details and handcrafted in Florence. For this reason, it was important that the first project for Aquazzura Casa was to be carried out with a company that could create an ex- traordinary kitchen environment that above all shared our values.” Although belonging to different sectors, Officine Gullo and Aquazzura share common values in their constant search for beauty and perfection in details, a signature of Florentine craftsmanship.

Andrea Gullo tells us: “I had the pleasure of being introduced to Edgardo by mutual friends, but I was well aware of the success of his women’s footwear brand. I immediately appreciated the highquality details and the unmistakable elegance of his creations. Both of our companies currently boast a presence in the main international capitals and our respective customers want almost the same thing: unique products capable of fully responding to the indispensable needs of functionality and style. I be- lieve that the magnificent collection of cooking appliances that we will present together at the Fuorisalone in September is the best homage we could make to the Florentine tradition of artis- anal excellence that unites Officine Gullo and Aquazzura.”

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do” A moment with founder of London interior design studio

Jenny Allan Design Winner International Design Awards 2019.

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you start your career?

My background is in property development, so from an early age I have understood how to add value to homes. Even when designing a home for a private client we always have in mind that everything we do, no matter how bespoke, should enhance the property’s value. I started the business 7 and a half years ago and it has been an amazing journey to this point. We have worked on some incredible projects and have won multiple awards and accolades.

What do you think are the main design elements to consider when it comes to designing a house or apartment?

Aside from the client’s overall brief it is important to work with the architecture of the property and ensure that the home flows. Successful design is how a property feels when you are in it. Ask yourself, how does a property feels when you walk around it? Do you feel calm or is there something just not right that it is hard to put your finger on? That is the essence of design, how you feel in the space.

You are not only doing interior design for houses, you have also aviation projects, what are the most important design elements there?

With aviation, space is at a premium so it has to be incredibly efficiently designed whilst not feeling cramped. We use materials which give the impression of more space such as high gloss veneer and reflective finishes. Excellent lighting is also essential. Patterns that are too busy can also overpower a small space so we keep things fairly neutral but adding beautiful textures is a way of giving the design interest. Are there any new exciting projects that you are currently working on that you would like to share with our readers?

We have a number of great projects that we are working on and also in the pipeline. Many of our projects are in Prime Central London and the home counties however we do also work internationally. We have recently designed a large country estate for clients which has been an exciting and lengthy process. Restoring properties to their former glory is a challenge but very rewarding.

What’s been the biggest turning point in your career?

When we won at the International Design Awards that really took the business to the next level. It was so prestigious and such an honour.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your career?

Patience! It takes time to grow a business, hire the right staff and build a brand but with continued focus and a lot of hard work it is worth the wait. jennyallandesign.co.uk

Its cinematic cobbled streets lined with designer boutiques, Michelin-starred restaurants and cosy wooden chalets weave a perfect backdrop for a hedonistic Alpine sojourn. Arnaud Zannier’s longstanding bond with Megève goes a few decades back in time when he used to ski its powdery slops on family holidays. A reference to his childhood memories, the quaint chalet became the first property in the ever-growing portfolio of Zannier Hotels. Zannier Hotels Le Chalet is the intimate hideaway of 12 beautifully crafted suites with unpretentious elegant interiors showcasing raw materials, muted colours and time-worn imperfections of handpicked antique artefacts.

After a day on the mountain, relax après-ski by a crackling fireplace with a glass of wine or treat yourself to an afternoon of luxuriant soaks and restorative rituals at the hotel’s spa. Featuring two private treatment rooms, indoor heated pool, hammam and a sauna, it promises a bespoke pampering experience delivered by caring and knowledgeable wellbeing experts. Wining and dining comes courtesy of “La Ferme de Mon Père”, an ambient restaurant overseen by the talented Chef Valentin Vakanas who was crowned World’s Best Commis at the Bocuse d’Or 2017. Celebrating freshness and seasonal ingredients, the menu is shaking up the codes of traditional restaurants by bringing vegetables to the center of the meal - no longer as side dishes. Come snow or shine, the dedicated concierge team has all your activities covered, from heli-skiing and paragliding to private guided hikes and hot-air balloon rides. At Zannier Hotels Le Chalet nothing is left to chance, a perfect abode for romantic getaways or quality time with the family, it allows you to take a break from routine and focus on what really matters.

Cambodia - Phum Baitang

The Zannier Foundation has been supporting underprivileged children in Cambodia since 2001, so when it was time to introduce the Zannier Hotels to a new market, this exotic country seemed like the natural choice. Built with respect for nature, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang is a tasteful jungle retreat nestled peacefully on the outskirts of Siem Reap. The Zannier Hotel’s team of designers spent three years travelling around Southeast Asia searching for inspiration in unassuming villages, antique markets and sacred temples. At the end of the cultural expedition they came up with 45 stylish villas modelled on traditional stilted huts and adorned with rustic furniture, wooden sliding doors, lantern-style lighting and carefully selected objets d'art. Spread amongst 20 acres of lush tropical gardens and verdant rice fields, the resort boasts a freeform saltwater swimming pool, an elegant spa, two laidback restaurants and an atmospheric cocktail bar. Fall in love with Cambodian cuisine while dining at the resort’s humble yet chic restaurants. Embracing local ingredients and cooking methods, Bay Phsar offers a tantalizing array of authentic Khmer dishes while Hang Bay serves fusion and international fare inspired by the country’s colonial past. The relaxed ambiance of The Sunset Lounge provides a perfect spot to watch the sun setting over the lush paddy fields. Savour a malt whiskey or a glass of wine in a century-old farmhouse, carefully restored and decked out with rattan chairs and oriental carpets.

Nurture your senses at the intricate Temple Spa imagined as an architectural tribute to the sacred Angkor ruins. The menu fuses traditional therapies and modern day relaxation techniques spanning the globe from Tibet to Sweden. Adopting a tailored approach to wellness, the enthusiastic team of skilled practitioners provides a series of holistic treatments using all-natural beauty potions formulated with hand-crushed herbs, roots and spices as well as organic cold pressed oils and rose water. Immersed in both the ancient heritage of Angkor and the contemporary culture of nowadays Cambodia, Zannier Hotels Phum Baintang makes a lavish base to admire the spiritual majesty of sacred temples, delve into the vibrant nightlife of Siem Reap or join a leisurely cycle tour through the timeless landscape of swaying palms and lemongrass meadows.

Zannier Hotels Omaanda

Namibia - Omaanda and Sonop Arnaud Zannier’s Namibian adventure started to unfold with Angelina Jolie renting his entire resort in Cambodia while directing the movie “First They Killed My Father”. Impressed with the ethos of the brand, the actress shared a story of Naankuse Foundation, a conservation charity committed to preserve the landscapes, cultures and diverse wildlife of Namibia. This unexpected encounter between a visionary hotelier and international celebrity renowned for her humanitarian efforts paved the way for Zannier Reserve, a transitional land close to Naankuse Foundation where rescued animals could be safely reintroduced into the wild. In the heart of the 7,500-hectare nature reserve lies Zannier Hotels Omaanda, a collection of 10 thatch and clay huts inspired by traditional Owambo architecture. Teeming with wildlife, the lodge offers its guests a unique opportunity to observe classic African wilderness in discrete and exceptional luxury. The partnership with the Naankuse Foundation ensures privileged access to conservation projects for elephants, rhinos and big cats. Grab front row seats to nature’s most spectacular shows!

Just a stone’s throw from a watering hole frequented by wildlife, Zannier Hotels Omaanda brings the game viewing to you. Experience nature at its wildest: have breakfast with a mischievous mob of resident meerkats, track a rhino or a herd of elephants going for a swim, spy on a leopard sleeping peacefully on a branch of a Jackalberry tree or grab your binoculars and simply enjoy the nocturnal beauty of the savannah, all with your own private guide.

Fascinated by the singular beauty of Namibia, Arnaud Zannier realised that one property was simply not enough to do justice to this beautifully diverse country. Staying true to the stripped-back approach to luxury, the brand’s fourth outpost is built on a spill of giant boulders amid the soaring dunes of the Namib Desert. There is nowhere else on earth quite like Zannier Hotels Sonop, if you are looking for an exclusive and intimate African experience the lodge ticks all the boxes. Inviting you to step back in time and get a taste of the grand safaris of yesteryear, its opulent residential tents evoke the era of intrepid explorers from the early 20th century. The interior design exhibits a potpourri of 550 antiques hand-picked at flea markets and dealers in England: binoculars, maps, mirrors, magnifying glasses, carpets, leather trunks, mahogany chairs and picture frames, as well as unique historical objects such as 19th century walking sticks and vestige Pith helmets. Chiming with the landscape, the earthy exteriors of Zannier Hotels Sonop almost looks like a mirage on a boundless ephemeral landscape of the world’s oldest desert. As night falls, the sky lights up with a myriad of stars creating the unique opportunity to peer into the vast unknown through the numerous telescopes available at the lodge. A conservation success story and dreamt up fantasy, the two properties in Namibia are often booked into one trip. With its own airstrip, Zannier Hotels Sonop is just an 80-minute flight to Windhoek or a 5-hour scenic drive straight to its sister lodge. Both hotels offer unforgettable gastronomic experiences allowing you to discover the diverse culture of Namibia through its hearty cuisine. From open-air Ambo Delights by Zannier Hotels Omaanda to the silver service extravaganza at Zannier Hotels Sonop, the rotating menus rely on seasonal farm-to-table produce and an excellent biodynamic wine list made up of labels from reputable South African wine regions, as well as from Domaines Roger Zannier.

Zannier Hotels Sonop

Awaken your senses with a swim in a heated infinity pool or get spoilt by soulful spa rituals inspired by ancient Namibian beliefs and empowered by locally grown roots, herbs and spices. An exhilarating desert experience calls for the ultimate post-safari relaxation, try Zannier Hotels Sonop’s signature ritual “Touch of Namibian Myrrh”, a soothing insight into the wisdom of nomadic Himba tribes. While Zannier Hotels Omaanda is a perfect place to encounter nature at its wildest and swap stories of the day’s adventures by the enchanting African boma, Zannier Hotels Sonop shows a different angle to Namibia by offering a complimentary range of engaging activities from e-mountain biking and scenic drives to astronomy experience and an openair cinema. Whether you are spending your day in a safari vehicle in search of wildlife or enjoying some well-deserved downtime by the pool, you can be sure that a sighting is never far off.

Zannier Hotels Sonop

Vietnam - Bãi San Hô Following the success in Cambodia, Arnaud Zannier decided to expand his brand to neighbouring Vietnam. Before embarking on this new venture he spent some time travelling around the country to acquire first hand knowledge of local culture and traditional construction techniques. The last addition to Zannier Hotels, Bãi San Hô is 245 acres of barefoot luxury sprawling across the hilltop of a secluded peninsula in the coastal province of Phu Yen. Echoing Vietnam’s rich history and unique ethnic diversity, 73 freestanding villas are based on three different architectural styles culturally embedded to this part of Vietnam. The beach pool villas take their visual cues from the vernacular architecture of Cham tribes, the hill pool villas are reminiscent of Ede communal houses and the paddy field villas draw on traditional stilts.

Seamlessly orchestrated by the talented Head Chef Dung Mai, dining at Zannier Hotels Bãi San Hô is an enriching experience: three distinctive culinary programs unveil the story of Vietnam by honouring unique cooking traditions passed down through generations. Start your day at a panoramic Nhà Ở restaurant serving scrumptious a la carte breakfasts along with the extensive buffet choices. An open setting of beachfront Làng Chài makes a perfect backdrop to enjoy the freshest coastal fare coupled with the endless sea vistas stretching to the horizon. Fostering a sense of community, the towering Bà Hai restaurant is the hotel’s pièce de résistance influenced by the spectacular architecture of the Bahnar ethic group. You can choose from four regional menus, each featuring 10 Vietnamese dishes that are designed to be shared with friends and family.

Introducing a selection of indigenous therapies, the philosophy of Hoa Sen Spa is based on five quintessential elements: Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Spirit. For the ultimate holistic escape indulge in a 3day healing program which includes a private yoga and meditation class, herbal bath, personalised body wrap, “Inspiration of Mekong” massage, pampering facial treatment and a nourishing manicure. Just a short drive from Zannier Hotels Bãi San Hô lies a different world. Discover a new culture by meeting a traditional healer, visiting a salt farm, learning how to cultivate rice or harvest oysters. Set a few days aside to explore the uncharted beauty of Phu Yen province with a friendly local expert who will be happy to create a tailored tour of discovery matching your personal interests and preferences.

Today’s Zannier Hotels is an eclectic collection of five intimate properties spanning four countries and three vastly different continents. Meticulously chosen design, intuitive service, historical references and deep respect for nature create the signature Zannier experience unique to all its resorts around the world. Whether you are in the Namibian desert or rural Vietnam, all the retreats not only provide the finer things in life but also echo the spirit of the nearby communities offering a glimpse into their culture and lifestyle, minimal and so beautifully different compared to our own. Past Meets Future - angelina Promising all the class you would expect from a five-star hotel, angelina is an enticing combination of cocktail bar, whisky lounge and fine dining restaurant. The name, spelled in lowercase, takes its cues from Angel’s Share, a distillery term that refers to the amount of whisky lost during the ageing process. Distinguished from the colonial and traditional style of the hotel, the uber glamorous establishment is a popular meeting spot for seasoned whiskey aficionados. The brainchild of award-winning Karen Hay of the Hong Kong-based INdulge studio, angelina’s interior mirrors the amazing palette of the Scottish countryside. Upholstered in soothing hints of amber yellow, lime green and dusty blue, the two-story space features a private dining area, exclusive whiskey lounge and sleek floor-to-ceiling bar displaying an impressive collection of liquor brands. The Celtic theme continues in opulent handprinted Timorous Beasties wallpaper, designed and produced in Glasgow, velvet wingback chairs and cosy infrared fireplaces creating an ambiance of intimacy during the chilly winter months.
