Polo in China is getting back Tang Polo Club China hosted the JJ International Launch Tournament in Anping

The game was competitive but very fair. Horses and players were in perfect shape, and despite being classified as a low-goal tournament, the level of polo was high and tight. Both teams were rather equally balanced and ambitious, hence the game became very speedy and sportive. The team of Tang Polo Club finally won the tournament with a 12:10 score (6:6 the first day) and received the award from the organizer Justin Jiang, founder of JJ International. Polo became the game of choice for the Chinese elite and was viewed as a form of entertainment rather than a competitive sport. Tang emperors used polo even as a tool of diplomacy.

Having long followed EQUITANA (originally established in Europe in 1972), Nic was all to aware of its reputation and the possibilities it offers to polo and as such he jumped at the chance to be part of the inaugural EQUITA taking place in Lexington, KY’s Horse Park, between the 1st and 3rd of October 2021. EQUITANA USA is the premier North American forum that promotes the exchange of ideas, information and experiences to enhance the horse and the equine industry. All while providing a high-quality event for those with a passion for horses. The three-day celebration of the horse invited equestrian professionals and enthusiasts of all riding levels and ages, disciplines, and breeds to gather for education, entertainment, instruction and shopping. Nic was quoted as saying that he “…was excited

at the chance to promote his sport to a wider audience and to highlight the athletic side of the equestrian community.” He also shared that he had been practicing his presenting skills and hopes that the audience will warm to his style. An Exclusive Interview with Polo Player

Mark Tomlinson In this exclusive interview, Mark Tomlinson talks about his passion for polo and his latest relationship with British equestrian brand Glaze & Gordon

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you start your career? Professional Player Mark Tomlinson

"I started playing polo at a very young age. I would say I was born into a polo family or even a dynasty (as the Beaufort Polo Club). My Grandfather played, my dad played, my mum played, and I was the youngest of three, so it was all kind of laid out for me, and it was a pretty perfect introduction and the ideal setting for a kid that loved horses and loved polo which I did."

You have an exciting new relationship with Glaze & Gordon, tell us about the project you have worked on?

"The relationship with Glaze & Gordon is very much an equestrian relationship based on genuine equestrian principles. We met at Olympia Horse Show, which is one of the big equestrian events in the sporting calendar, and I suppose it is two different equestrian ideologies - one kind from hunting, jumping and racing background from Glaze & Gordon and using that expertise and experience and adding it to polo."

What makes the Traditional Training Breeches you have worked on with Glaze & Gordon, different to others?

"I think the difference between the Glaze & Gordon breeches is that most other traditional polo trousers are made from jeans material. I think the original polo jeans were Levi 501s bought off the shelf. So you have an equestrian purpose-built traditional style breech which is pretty much non-existent in the polo world and only just coming about."

"The motto that I live by, not only in polo but in life, is 'what goes around, comes around.' Or in other words, sport is a great leveller," says Mark Tomlinson

Let's speak about your passion Polo and tell us your personal insider's tip for striking the perfect hit?

"My top tip for a perfect hit, as you call it, would be combining the perfect seat, ie: your riding ability, with the perfect swing. I think if you can have both of those things in place, then you are going to have every chance of creating a perfect hit."

What's the biggest lesson you've learnt in your career?

"The biggest lesson that I have learnt in polo is never to give up, however hard or however easy the task might feel. Never give up and give 100%."

The meeting led to the creation of a tailor-made kitchen for one of the Osorio residences as well as a capsule collection that will be presented at the next Fuorisalone 2021: a limited-edition series of Officine Gullo hand-painted cooking appliances decorated with the patterns of the new Aquazzura Casa tableware collection. The first chapter of this collaboration is a tailormade kitchen project that represents the perfect encounter between the two spheres. The location is exceptional: Palazzo Corner Spinelli, on the Grand Canal in the San Marco district of Venice.

The residence dates back to the end of the fifteenth century and is characterised by architecture that is representative of the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance in Venetian art, evident by the façade on the canal. An Officine Gullo kitchen was installed on the first floor in Osorio’s apartment, tailormade by the designer, his residence and his brand. Upon discovering Officine Gullo, one of the aspects that most struck Edgardo Osorio was the richness of the colours and the attention to detail curated in Florence. A turquoise kitchen with nickel finishes was created for him. The cooking appliances and refrigera- tion at professional performance level fit perfectly into the environment, characterised by a striped painted parquet floor and hand-decorated walls.

Exotic animals, flowers and brightly coloured trees recall motifs of fine 18th-century Chinese porcelain and transport the observer to an exotic garden and to distant places, as Osorio tells us:

“The initial idea for the kitchen came about after visiting Villa Necchi in Milan. In the villa, there’s a room that features a handpainted winter garden and I immediately fell in love with it. I always wanted to create a kitchen that resembled a living room and to do so I retrieved botanical drawings from the 18th century from which I drew inspiration for the trees and plants I wanted to use, mixing the flora of different seasons of the year.” Osorio’s creativity was supported by Officine Gullo’s tailoring, following the designer’s wishes by forming a one-of-a-kind kitchen just as the Creative Director of Aquazzura had imagined: “During the renovation of my new home in Venice, I was looking for a special kitchen that was truly unique. I’ve never been a big fan of kitchen environments and for this reason I wanted to design one where spending time was a pleasure.

I wanted to reproduce a winter garden that was filled with colour, animals, and trees from different seasons of the year. The walls are all hand painted and Aquazzura’s iconic logo, the pineapple, is featured in the doors and knobs for a whimsical and personal touch. Creating this means the kitchen has truly become the heart of my home.”

The environment was designed to suit Edgardo Osorio’s specific needs, to accommodate special moments spent with family and friends: “I’m used to organising many private events and occasions, and my kitchen is often used for din- ners and lunches with friends who come to visit me in Venice. Gullo kitchens are beautiful, colour- ful, full of unique details and handcrafted in Florence. For this reason, it was important that the first project for Aquazzura Casa was to be carried out with a company that could create an extraordinary kitchen environment that above all shared our values.” Although belonging to different sectors, Officine Gullo and Aquazzura share common values in their constant search for beauty and perfection in details, a signature of Florentine craftsmanship.

Andrea Gullo tells us: “I had the pleasure of being introduced to Edgardo by mutual friends, but I was well aware of the success of his women’s footwear brand. I immediately appreciated the highquality details and the unmistakable elegance of his creations. Both of our companies currently boast a presence in the main international capitals and our respective customers want almost the same thing: unique products capable of fully responding to the indispensable needs of functionality and style. Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you start your career?

My background is in property development, so from an early age I have understood how to add value to homes. Even when designing a home for a private client we always have in mind that everything we do, no matter how bespoke, should enhance the property’s value. I started the business 7 and a half years ago and it has been an amazing journey to this point. We have worked on some incredible projects and have won multiple awards and accolades.

What do you think are the main design elements to consider when it comes to designing a house or apartment?

Aside from the client’s overall brief it is important to work with the architecture of the property and ensure that the home flows. Successful design is how a property feels when you are in it. Ask yourself, how does a property feels when you walk around it? Do you feel calm or is there something just not right that it is hard to put your finger on? That is the essence of design, how you feel in the space.

You are not only doing interior design for houses, you have also aviation projects, what are the most important design elements there?

With aviation, space is at a premium so it has to be incredibly efficiently designed whilst not feeling cramped. We use materials which give the impression of more space such as high gloss veneer and reflective finishes. Excellent lighting is also essential. Patterns that are too busy can also overpower a small space so we keep things fairly neutral but adding beautiful textures is a way of giving the design interest. Are there any new exciting projects that you are currently working on that you would like to share with our readers?

We have a number of great projects that we are working on and also in the pipeline. Many of our projects are in Prime Central London and the home counties however we do also work internationally. We have recently designed a large country estate for clients which has been an exciting and lengthy process. Restoring properties to their former glory is a challenge but very rewarding.

What’s been the biggest turning point in your career?

When we won at the International Design Awards that really took the business to the next level. It was so prestigious and such an honour.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your career?
