Bev Scott Mullen completed her one She overcame her fear of swimming in mile open water swim in 37 minutes open water! Great North Swim to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer overcame some hurdles to make sure she Bev has raised an amazing £1800 so far, smashing her target of £1000. smashed her fund raising target. The Great North Swim was cancelled (toxic, blue-green algae was found in Lake Windermere, making it unsuitable for swimming) so Bev had to quickly re-schedule, to ensure she was still able to raise funds. Bev finally competed in the Great Salford Swim.

From Sunshine to Snow… in Style I am sat at Amanda Hamilton’s table, looking around the room, whilst she makes us both a cup of coffee. She has a home to die for, “Brook Cottage” is beautiful, but what did I expect, she is after all an interior designer, with incredible taste and a gift for turning a house into an incredible home. Amanda shares her Duffield home with her husband and her 3 girls, Olivia, Charlotte and Emily. She is the owner of Interior Design Duffield (www.interiordesignduffield.co.uk) and has a passion for nostalgia, reusing and recycling beautiful things for us to use today. Amanda works from home, where you can make an appointment to see her, or she can visit you in your own home.
When she found a beach hut seller, closing down, she couldn’t resist buying his stock… all of it! She then set about lovingly restoring each piece, creating stunning deckchairs, with beautiful canvas and head cushions. The results are incredible, the chairs are now good enough to be seen in any room of your home as well as the garden. With a huge range of fabrics, Amanda is also able to make deck chairs to your individual order. As winter descends, she has tuned her thoughts to another area of nostalgia and sourced a wonderful range of traditional and vintage sledges. Again, Amanda has rescued, restored, re-oiled and re-strung a collection of vintage sledges, but since she only has a limited number of these available, she has also found a remarkable traditional sledge range with a modern twist.
Folding Sledges are available in 2 sizes, 110 cms and 90 cms. Both sledges are incredibly well made and beautifully traditional, yet fold in half to make them easy to carry and store. They cost around £70. The smaller sledge also comes with a detachable baby seat and its own carry bag, they are wonderful and would make a perfect Christmas present! Amanda is a fantastic source of style inspiration. Blue Water designer menswear and ladieswear Steve Robinson and his wife Rachel opened their first shop, Start and Treymane in Burton on Trent in 2000. Since then, Steve has continued to expand his retailing business, opening Blue Water (designer menswear and ladieswear) in Burton on Trent, then opening further Blue Water stores at Barton Marina and last year in Sadler Gate. Earlier this year Steve opened Sophia Accessories (in partnership with his daughter) again at Barton Marina and his latest venture, the former Cassis
shop in King Street, Belper opened at the end of October. The list of stockists for his shop is endless, womenswear, menswear, accessories, footwear, gifts, furniture and childrenswear (for women, Sandwich, White Stuff, In-wear, Part Two, Masai and Noa Noa are just a few). Sourcing and buying classic and contemporary designs keeps Steve busy and he relies upon the gut instinct that has proved him to be a success so far. He says, “I buy what I would like to see people wear!” and that certainly seems to be working. Steve stays close

A taste of Slug! When out shopping with the children I always look forward to sitting down to a lovely meal and a coffee in grown up surroundings – but it also has to be a place where I know the children will be made welcome, and more importantly fed well!!
The Children's Menu are all served with a little pot of crunchy carrots and juicy cucumber, to munch on, followed by a dollop of chocolate or vanilla ice cream and served with your choice of a Fruit Shoot or Five Alive drink. Or what about the Sunday Roast? Why bother with all that washing up and sprout peeling – pop into the Slug and Lettuce and let them do it all for you. It’s great to know that even in the centre of town there are places like the Slug & Lettuce that welcome the whole family – so take your time, relax and enjoy!
The Slug and Lettuce ticks those boxes and more for me – and being situated in Derby’s beautiful cathedral quarter, it’s an ideal place to take the children after a hard day’s shopping. Set on the cobbled lanes of Irongate, it’s only a short distance from the hustle and bustle of the Boutique shops of the Sadlergate area or the Westfield Shopping Centre. It’s also just round the corner from the Assembly Rooms, Guildhall Theatre & the Quad so it’s a great place for the family to eat after one of the many Christmas shows or events in Derby.
The staff really are genuinely friendly and service is prompt – an important factor when eating out with little ones! Children are welcome anywhere in the restaurant but there is also a special kiddies corner which has recently been refurbished to include a television and toys – the perfect place to keep the little ones entertained whilst you relax. Throughout the year, a series of afternoons, ’ Enrichment Afternoons’, are focused upon a theme related to sustainability. Children can choose from a range of activities based upon these themes. It gives the children opportunity to work with children, teachers and teaching assistants in other classes and year groups. We try to spend as much time as possible learning about our world and have gained two Green Flags and National Awards for Sustainability. We foster creativity and independence of mind, incite a love of learning and a life-long zest for education necessary for a successful and fulfilled future. We are very proud of our School Council which meets regularly to discuss improvements to the running of the school. The children communicate clearly and become confident, articulate individuals. Each year group has a weekly open morning where parents and carers are invited to work for 15 minutes alongside their children. This is an opportunity to share learning with your child and has proved and invaluable way of keeping in touch with your child’s development. We have very strong links with our parents and they provide a truly valuable support in assisting with groups and activities throughout our school. We are extremely fortunate to have an active and motivated Parent Association which contributes significantly to the success of our school.

Baked Camembert Stuffed Onions with Cranberries Makes 8 This delightful dish features quite regularly in our household, as a modern take on the fabulous fondues’s from the 70’s, and can be prepared in advance and simply popped in the oven as your guests arrive. You can, if you so wish, offer individual Camemberts to your guests, but I prefer the informal sharing of this dish, and it’s a great centre piece for the table as a sharing starter. You will need… • 1 large Camembert– presented in a wooden casing • I Jar good quality Cranberry Sauce – • Fresh Cranberries to decorate • Breadsticks or toasted croutons. Alternatively use day old bread, baked off in the oven to freshen and slightly crisp
These stuffed onions are wholesome and filling in themselves, and are great served alongside a simple piece of meat or poultry. They are fabulous for Christmas too, with their plummy colour and stuffed core, and they keep for a couple of days, so can be made in advance and kept refrigerated. You will need… • 8 medium red onions, peeled • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 rashers streaky bacon, chopped • 50g pine nuts • 225g fresh breadcrumbs • 2 large eggs • 125g butter, melted • ½ tsp Dijon mustard • 10g flat leaf parsley • 5 sage leaves, chopped • 6 sprigs thyme, leaves removed • Juice and grated zest of 1 orange • Juice and grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon
Unwrap the Camembert but leave seated on the paper it is wrapped in. Lavender grey Lavender grey was opened by Belper born Lucy Coulthard in June 2007, whilst sourcing items for Interior design projects, she found some beautiful items which she thought other people would love. Lavender grey is a beautiful shop, exquisitely designed to showcase the beautiful home wares, gifts and accessories that adorn the shop. What is impressive about the shop, is that it truly is a family run business, as well as running her own interior design business, Lucy works in the shop with her partner Kristian. Other members of her family also help out, including her dad, mum, her sister, cousins and her lovely Lala.
