It’s back... The Bearded Theory Festival at Kedleston

Come along and camp in the beautiful grounds of Kedleston Hall from Friday 18th May to Sunday 20th May 2012 and experience the true spirit of a family friendly festival at the Bearded Theory Festival.

For families, there will be a Children’s Village and Angel Gardens, which is an area completely dedicated to entertaining children. Traditional cosy bell tents will be offering over 50 different workshops and activities including face painting, lantern, wand and garland making, dancing, music, crafts and games, all run by CRB checked and approved professionals. The Heage Out of School Club also run an area with drawing, painting, sandpit and toys and games for the little ones. Other attractions include a bouncy castle and inflatable slide, children’s theatre and puppet shows.

A charity fun run for children… The Hairy Hemet Relay Race launched last year with 83 teams running in a 4 leg relay race, each runner covering just over 2 miles. The event, which took place in Darley Park, was a huge success, raising funds for charity and a great family evening. So this year organisers, Derwent Runners, are aiming to make it even bigger and better. As well as the adult race, they are now hosting The Little Hoops Loop, a one mile run for children around Darley Abbey Meadow. The cost for entry is £1 and they hope that children will pay their entry using their own pocket money to help support other children. All monies raised will be given to the worthy charity The Rainbows Children’s Hospice.The Little Hoops Race will take place on Friday 15th June at 6.00pm and will be followed by the Hairy Helmet Relay, which begins at 7.00 pm. All contestants will meet at the Cricket Club in Darley Abbey. After the race, the organisers hope that families will stay and enjoy the evening, bring a picnic to the park, enjoy some of the real ales that will be available and a great family evening. Matlock Farm Park Easter. There will be plenty to do over the holidays, give the farm park a ring to ďŹ nd out when they are having their Easter Egg hunts ! There are Horse riding lessons and Pony Trekking through the farm yards and The farm park is expecting quite a few to forests (booking essential) and Pony Rides be born towards the end of March and the in the park (when available). Easter Period and it would be great if you could come and help bottle feed them. They are very loveable. Mr. Doodle Doo will also be there to help out. There has been another new arrival at the farm park, her name is Billie the new kid goat. We also have Pippa the pig who likes to play football sometimes, but she is a bit temperamental (like a lot of footballers) and only plays when she feels like it. Cracking start to farm attraction’s The National Forest Adventure Farm is gearing up for a cracking start to the 2012 season with new attractions and some eggciting Easter activities. Says Tom Robinson, “Although we only opened less than a year ago, we are already investing in new attractions for 2012. For younger visitors we are building a new junior play area with challenges designed for children up to the age of 7. All visitors will ﬁnd a challenge in our new crazy golf course with its fun obstacles.”

The new attractions will be open in time for the start of the Easter holidays on 31 March. Throughout the Easter holidays daily from 31 March to 15 April, visitors will be able to help with bottle feeding the lambs and seeing the new chicks which are hatching at this time. There is also a fun Easter trail around the farm with a tasty reward at the end. Children will also love getting stuck in to the Easter themed craft activities.

Highfields Happy Hens …so much more than a great day out for the Highfields is a Care Farming Initiative based in Etwall– it is a school for youngsters who are struggling at school (often excluded) – who need some space and a loving environment to sort themselves out – the shop, the tea room and the open farm, provide incredible life changing and teaching experiences. Highfields provides this experience to over 30 youngsters each week. It is this service for work with young people that saw Roger Hosking, who owns Highfields, receive a MBE in January.

Churches and individuals help Highfields in a very practical way by becoming Highfields agents. The agents sell Highfields produce at preferential rates to their friends, neighbours and congregations. This enables them to earn a little extra, and Highfields continue their work with young people. And of course, customers enjoy wellproduced, healthy food at fair prices!

The poultry farm operates a very successful egg selling agency package for individuals, schools, clubs, churches and other groups. They continually need more customers for their real free range eggs and other produce so that they can provide more employment and training for special needs young people and youngsters being excluded from Education.

Great food, great staff, great oﬀer an array of platters that are created using the delicious produce within the counters, from anti pasti platters to traditional ploughmans, pates with rustic breads, cheeseboards with chutneys and fruit, incredible soups served with their wonderful breads. Having opened their doors nearly 8 months ago to their second store, it’s easy to see why customers queue happily for a table in this fabulous establishment that has quickly gained a reputation as the place to be.

Ah yes..bread and the real food campaign that has been at the heart of Jack Rabbits since it opened its doors 3 years ago, supporting independent suppliers in the immediate vicinity… The bread is baked at the Loaf in Crich, using traditional methods and collected each morning. The breakfast menu draws customers through the doors in the crowds, and it is usual to have to wait a few minutes to get a table, but trust me, it’s worth the wait! Free range bacon, softly scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, peppered mackerel, roasted vine tomatoes, the breakfast menu is a delight.

The beauty of Jack Rabbits is not just the setting, the casual ambience, the relaxed atmosphere, but they seem to strike the right balance and they seem to have struck a chord with their customer base which is ever growing, with people returning time over to indulge in both the grocery store and dining hall.
