Being a foster carer is a career which uniquely combines family life with a skilled profession. More carers are urgently needed locally and across the Midlands and Compass Children’s Services is keen to hear from anyone who is interested. Compass, a leading independent fostering agency, was judged by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’ in July 2012. Derby foster carer Karen Lamb, talks about her role: “I always knew I wanted to foster. My husband and I had worked in schools, myself as a teacher, and we do youth work through our local church. Seven years on we have three boys placed with us. We’ve had some challenges but I’ve learnt a lot about myself and enjoy being at home for our children and our foster children.” Recruitment officer Sally Deignan, says: “Our Carers often tell us they’ve always known they’d like to be a foster carer. Some are inspired by a carer they know or through working in related fields such as teaching. If you think it is something you could do, Compass would love to hear from you.”

I’m Fiona; mum, wife and financial adviser I’m really excited to be working with Polly’s List to provide you with useful and interesting money saving tips and information. “Every child is an artist” (Pablo Picasso)

Whether through imaginative play, construction toys, painting, singing, dancing or storytelling, they find a way to access their innate sense of creativity. Self expression is such an important part of each individual’s development and our children often have very different personalities to our own and to those of their siblings. Derby College have been thinking about this and researching what is available for those children and young people with a particular interest in the arts to expand and develop their skills and ideas outside of the school environment. They also considered the differences within families and the possibility that one child might be interested in dance and drama whereas another might want to explore visual arts or creative writing. At Derby College they are trying to make something pretty unique happen. They are exploring the possibility of providing visual art workshops, games development sessions and media classes for 7 – 19 year olds alongside their existing LIPA 4:19 Academy for Performing Arts. This is an innovative idea based around a vision of having 7-19 year olds making use of the excellent facilities Derby College have at their fingertips and extending their remit to include younger learners and the wider community. LIPA 4:19 Academy @ Derby College is an extension of The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, which was co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney and it gives 4 to 19

year-olds the opportunity to sing, dance and act. It offers fun and engaging weekend performing arts classes over three terms each school year. Children aged 7 years and older take part in three hour long workshops; one in each of the performing arts disciplines – singing, dancing and drama. The LIPA 4:19 tutors are all highly qualified and engaging individuals who have experienced performance at a professional level. Early Start Workshops for children aged 4-6 years are 90 minutes long and combine dance, drama and song in a fun, creative and engaging way. Each LIPA 4:19 term is 12 weeks long and the fee is £285 per term for 7-19 year olds and £150 per term for early start students. At first glance, this might appear expensive but when you consider that in singing classes, music theory and vocal technique is taught in great detail, dance classes teach good posture and technique as well as many genres

End of term and end of year performances are planned for friends and if anyone is interested in joining LIPA 4:19 but wants to try it first before they decide, a free taster can be arranged.

With only 7 weeks left until Christmas Eve… …I’m in the throes of compiling my many shopping list for the festive period…gifts galore, a staple LBD, indulgent foods and nibbles that’ll keep friends and family casually fed when they descend, and festive decorations to bring my home alight with a sprinkle of Christmas Magic! As an ardent shopper, I’m keen to ensure that Jack Rabbits is able to put as many ticks against these never ending lists as possible, so can promise a store full of festive treats and sumptuous gift ideas. Experience has taught me that a larder full of decadent ingredients makes for easy entertaining, and having a couple of spare gifts on standby for those awkward moments when a visitor surprises you with a present you weren’t expecting has stood me in good stead! My own wish lists aside, if there are any edible delights you would like to adorn your tables with during the festive period, place

your orders now and we’ll do the rest for you. For fabulous gift ideas, may we remind you about our glorious wooden hampers that we create bespokely for you, ensuring the recipient is gifted with the foods they love. Alongside our hampers we also have our extensive range of Walnut and Oak serving boards, which can be combined with a selection of fresh and dried goods. Great stocking fillers include our hugely popular enamel tin mugs, and bags of mouth-watering handmade chocolate truffles (the salted caramels are a winner with me!) To coincide with late night christmas shopping across the city, we will be extending our opening hours to 10.00pm on Thursday evenings, offering a range of hot specials to support our daily menu. We the emphasis very much on relaxed dining, we offer the perfect environment to rest your weary feet and indulge in a warming supper and a enjoy a drink or two. Having moved our Bistro evening to Wednesdays from the 21st November, given their popularity booking is strongly advisable.

We are also hosting our annual christmas market on Sunday 25th November, where we will be displaying many of our christmas wares, from glorious foods to gift ideas. Open from 10.00 - 3.00, you will be able to sample much of the produce we have available in store. Picking your Christmas Tree sometime soon? When you have selected the “perfect” Christmas tree and NOT putting it up right away store it in a unheated garage, shed etc in a bucket of water, out of the wind and freezing temperatures - or if no frost or very cold weather has been predicted then simply leave it outside. Choose a tree stand that can hold water, top up with water every day this will help retain the needles and give a fresh pine smell. Never place your tree near a direct heat source i.e. open fires or radiators.

Always unplug tree lights at night and try to use low voltage LED lights as they produce much less heat and reduce the drying effect on the tree.

Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri): Another slender Christmas Tree with very dense, compact, bushy growth and excellent needle retention.

Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika): Slender tree with silver and green needles that are soft to touch with good needle retention.

Allestree School’s Out Club Allestree School’s Out Club offer a reliable Childcare Service open to all children from 3-14 years. They provide childcare before school from 7am and After School Care up to 6pm for local schools and nurseries. (a list of schools appears on their website www. schoolsoutclub.com). They offer one off sessions as well as set sessions each week. Teacher Training Days and Holiday Clubs are also available from 7am-6pm with a range of different sessions available to suit your needs

The After School Club services collect children from their schools and escorts them safely to our after school club setting. Once returned to their setting they provide children with a relaxed environment where they can freely choose activities and toys to participate in and play with. Déda makes dancing fun… Déda is a great place to bring your little ones to experience the fun of creative dance and movement, offering many classes each week to suit all ages and stages. Excellent parent and child classes for Déda Minis include Rompers, for babies who are sitting and crawling, and Stompers, for toddlers and pre-schoolers. These take place on Monday and Friday mornings during term time, and are complemented by a further parent or carer and child class, Movers and Shakers on Saturday afternoons. All these classes are drop-in and often sell out, so book to avoid disappointment.

Derby College has teamed up with the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) - which was co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney - to open a part-time performing arts academy in the city. Children and young people can unleash their creativity and develop their talent at a range of inspiring LIPA Academy sessions, taking place on Saturdays during term time. Sessions start on 12th January 2013 for 12 weeks.

LIPA runs early starts ... There are early start sessions for 4 - 6 year olds for one and a half hours per week and for 7 - 19 year olds three hours per week. This covers Dance, Drama and Acting.
