W

hether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Eid al-Fitr, Bodhi Day, or the winter solstice, holiday traditions are a fun way for families to bond and create fond memories. The traditions you choose are limited only by your imagination in the way you and your family carry them out. The following are a few fun traditions to consider.

Custom for gatherings Storytelling. Choose a theme such as ‘my most memorable holiday season’ or ‘the best thing that happened this year,’ and ask each person to share a memory. Record the storytelling on video or audio, then play it in future years as part of your memory sharing tradition. Poetry. Hold a holiday poetry reading. Ask each person to bring copies of their favorite seasonal or holiday poems to pass out and read aloud at your gathering. White elephant. Rather than exchanging gifts or doing a drawing for a gift exchange, hold a ‘white elephant.’ Each guest brings a wrapped gift that anyone can use. Everyone then draws a numbered slip and takes a turn choosing either a wrapped gift or taking an unwrapped gift from another participant. If a player loses their gift, that person gets to choose another wrapped gift or take a gift from someone else. For complete rules and variations on this fun gift exchange, visit whiteelephantrules.com

For twosomes or the whole brood Cozy escape. Escape the holiday hustle and bustle, and enjoy a holiday retreat. Try a cozy cabin in the woods or another scenic setting. Then enjoy your togetherness near a roasting fire, flipping through family photo albums, enjoying holiday music, doing crafts, and other relaxing activities. Holiday countdown. Take a 3" by 3' strip of ribbon and cut 24-paired slits from top to bottom. Thread each pair with a narrow ribbon and tie a sucker in each. Beginning December 1st, remove a lollipop each day through Christmas Eve, or the eve of the holiday you celebrate. Romantic evening. Couples often forget to take time out for each other during the busy holiday season. Plan an evening for two and reserve a table near a fireplace or a different romantic setting. When you return home, light some candles and your 8 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023

tree, listen to holiday or soft music, and exchange a special gift with each other. Then spend the evening reminiscing and sharing your dreams for the future. Cut your own tree. Take the whole family to a tree farm and make a day of it. Look for the perfect tree to compliment your home, or that fits your family's taste. International customs. Pick up a book on holiday customs around the world. Each year, choose a different culture or nationality for your theme. Then decorate and try new traditions accordingly.

"Escape the holiday hustle and bustle, and enjoy a holiday retreat." Shopping date. Make a date with your partner, and assist each other in selecting your holiday attire. Decide in advance on the formality, so you choose complementary outfits, and your shopping trip together remains agreeable.

Just for you Pamper yourself. Decorate the bathroom in holiday candles, fragrance, and holly. Throw on some holiday or other relaxing music. Then enjoy a long bubble bath and give yourself a full salon treatment. Include a manicure, pedicure, deep hair conditioning, facial mask, and body buff.

Traditions for all Stockings for adults. Fill stockings for your partner, parents, or grandparents to discover. Stuff them with treats, beauty products, postage stamps, lottery tickets, and other inexpensive or usable items. Help a needy family. Deliver a box of groceries, or supply a family with gloves and hats. Ask your children to make room for their own new gifts by donating good, unwanted toys. Offer the toys to the needy family to leave from Santa, or wrap them yourself and leave them on the doorstep. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride. Don’t forget blankets and your favorite hot beverage for warming your lips and hands.

A special ornament. Buy a new tree ornament each year that signifies something important such as your baby’s first Christmas or solstice. If it’s your first season in a new home, find an ornament that represents it. Homemade wrapping paper. Get a roll of brown Kraft paper. Then cut holiday shapes out of sponges, dip them in holidaycolored paint, and stamp the shapes onto the paper. Use glitter and glue to add to the festive look.

Tradition Tips Discontinue holiday traditions that have lost their appeal and usefulness or that create too much stress. Talk to your family members or friends who share in the tradition, explain your feelings, and ask for input. They may feel the same. Even if they don't, you can try to reach a compromise that satisfies everyone. Don’t overdo it. It’s easy to get carried away with customs. Be selective and choose those that mean the most to you and your family. Most traditions require some investment of time, energy, or money. Taking on too many can cause stress and lead traditions to lose their appeal. When you choose traditions, divide the responsibilities. Women often take sole responsibility for holiday activities, which can be overwhelming and interfere with their ability to really enjoy the season. So try not to strive for perfection, and allow men and children to help in the preparation. By keeping these tips in mind and being flexible, you and your family can enjoy holiday traditions for years to come.

Strengthen the Family Connection SHARE CHILDHOOD CLASSICS WITH YOUR KIDS In spite of returning to busy school-day schedules and neverending to-do lists, most families want to maintain a sense of connectedness all year round. Special moments with your family start by leaving behind that checklist, setting smartphones aside and saving responsibilities for tomorrow. If you catch yourself reminiscing about the goodness you grew up on, turning back the clock and showing your kiddos what childhood was like for you is one way to foster a better connection with your kids. Throw it back to your childhood with these family-favorite activities to enjoy at the breakfast table, after school or over a weekend.

Read Favorite Books

Take it a more educational route and hook your children on a favorite novel, short story or book series. You can introduce them to favorite genres, popular characters or specific authors then head to the library to search the shelves. In fact, you could be giving them a leg up on English class; literature from your days in the classroom might still be read in schools today.

Share the Goodness You Grew Up On

Childhood in the '80s and '90s meant school-day mornings with cartoons and delicious breakfasts. Classics like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms and Cheerios were good then and are even better now with 20% the daily recommended value of Vitamin D - twice the previous amount. Vitamin D is essential for building and maintaining strong bones but is often underconsumed, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with 96% of all Americans ages 2 years and older falling short on this key nutrient. "Cereal has the same great taste as when parents were kids and now even better nutrition," said Amy Cohn, registered dietitian and senior nutrition manager at General Mills. "Affordable, accessible nutrition doesn't have to be complicated or break the bank - and it can be as easy as a bowl of cereal beloved by multiple generations."

Get Outside and Explore

Tech devices from tablets to video game consoles often dominate kids' free time, but you can open their minds to a whole new world with a little outdoor exploration. Climb aboard bicycles (and strap on those helmets) for a cruise around the neighborhood or enjoy bird watching from the comfort of the backyard. If you're on the adventurous side, gather a tent and s'mores supplies for a night or weekend in the great outdoors.

Watch Classic Movies

No VCR, no problem. A range of streaming services available at your fingertips means you can watch remastered classics just using a smart TV or casting device. Whether it's a Spielberg favorite, original superhero flick or comedy classic, an abundance of kid-friendly movies from the video rental days are ready to watch online.

"Affordable, accessible nutrition doesn't have to be complicated or break the bank"

Play Board Games

Another way to turn kids' attention from screens to the physical world is to dust off those old board games for some fun at the dining room table. Start with the basics like checkers or, with older children, jump straight into strategy-based brain games like chess for a dose of friendly competition. Friendsgiving & Solitary Celebrations

TO MAKE THE MOST OF THANKSGIVING DAY By Kimberly Blaker

The long-held tradition of the family gathered around a table for a savory Thanksgiving feast carries fond memories for most. Yet, many will spend the day alone, either out of circumstance or by choice. Whatever the case, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the holiday without family. So whether you go it alone or decide to hold a Friendsgiving, follow these tips to make the most of your holiday.

The upside of spending Thanksgiving alone is that you can celebrate any way you choose. But be sure to plan ahead so you don't waste it away. Unless that's what you want to do, which is perfectly fine, too. One of the benefits of spending the day alone is that you can feast on anything your heart desires. If you like cooking, it's the perfect day to pull out your favorite recipes and treat yourself to a gourmet meal. If cooking isn't your thing, you can still indulge by eating out. A few restaurants are open on Thanksgiving. Some will even serve a Thanksgiving dinner. Just make your reservation a week or so in advance because restaurants book up early for the holiday. One thing that doesn't shut down on Thanksgiving is the movie theater. So you can catch a flick and treat yourself to hot buttery popcorn. If weather permits, get some fresh air and go for a bike ride or hike. On the other hand, you can stay in where it's cozy and warm and bask in a home spa treatment. Give yourself a manicure, pedicure, facial, and try out a new hair color. Thanksgiving is also an excellent day for a trip down memory lane. Pour a glass of wine, play some music from your past, and flip through photo albums.

14 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023

Is there a book you've been dying to read? Curl up on the couch and spend the entire day relaxing and reading. It's also the perfect opportunity to call family or friends you haven't spoken to in a while. So give them a ring and catch up. Maybe you'd really like to do something good for the soul and others. If so, offer to help at a soup kitchen. Another option is to take up a coat collection. Then on Thanksgiving, deliver the coats to a shelter or distribute them in areas populated by the homeless.

Even if you don't have family around for the holidays, you don't have to spend it alone. In fact, many people opt to spend the day with friends to avoid the hot political climate that all too often erupts at family Thanksgiving gatherings. Odds are you have friends, co-workers, neighbors, or acquaintances who'll also be spending the day alone. So why not hold a Friendsgiving? Even if you spend Thanksgiving with family, Friendsgiving is so popular, many people hold a Friendsgiving on Friday or Saturday so they too can enjoy the holiday with their friends. There are a lot of ways to do your Friendsgiving, which might depend, in part, on the size of your guest list. If it's only a couple of you, split the grocery list, then plan to cook together that day. You could also skip the hassle and enjoy dinner out. If you choose the latter for Thanksgiving day, make reservations well in advance. If you'd like to celebrate with several friends, a potluck might be best. Just plan everything ahead so the day will be a success without a ton of work and stress on your part. As the host, you might offer to do the Turkey or meat yourself. Then ask

each person to bring one or two specific types of dishes. For example, ask a couple of friends to bring a vegetable dish. Ask them to let you know in advance what specifically they plan to bring so you don't have multiples of the same vegetable. You can assign a couple of other guests to bring dessert, and another to bring dinner rolls and snacks. For beverages, you could offer to supply soda. But ask everyone to bring their own alcoholic drinks. Or, if you know everyone likes beer or wine, ask each person to bring something to share so you can all enjoy tasting and a variety.

In addition to the day's main event – delicious food – you could also plan for some form of entertainment. Put together a variety of music to fit everyone's tastes. You could also play cards or games. If all your guests are football fans, it couldn't get any easier. Do any of your guests have kids? If so, have a clean childproof room available where they can play away from the adult ruckus. Whatever way you choose to spend your day, the most important thing is to enjoy it and know you're in good company – whether it be the company of acquaintances, friends, or your own.

A GUIDE TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS: GEAR FOR FIRST-TIME CAMPERS

must-haves

C

amping for the first time can be an exciting adventure! Spending time outdoors provides a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can get away from the city and recharge while enjoying the beauty of nature. However, you'll need the right gear to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Whether heading into the wilderness or staying at a campsite, here are five must-have items every first-time camper should have.

1. SHELTER Think of your shelter as your home away from home in the great outdoors. First, you'll need a durable, weather-resistant tent big enough to accommodate you and your camping buddies. Make sure to practice setting up the tent at home before your trip to avoid any mishaps that can delay setting up camp. Also, consider purchasing a pop-up canopy to provide shade and protection from rain over a picnic table while you cook, eat or play games. In a pinch, you can use a rope to string a tarp between two trees to create cover.

2. LIGHTING When the sun sets, you'll need a reliable light source to continue to share stories late into the night with your camping companions or illuminate your tent as you wind down. That's

why it's important to pack lighting gear like headlamps, lanterns and flashlights. Choose products like ELECOM NESTOUT Outdoor Gear rugged, compact and lightweight dimmable lanterns and flashlights. Inspired by traditional camping equipment, the Lamp-1 lantern is designed for harsh environments and is water- and dust-resistant. The soft, diffused, warm light is perfect for getting cozy and provides wide light coverage, so you feel like you're gathered around a small fire. While a lantern provides 360 degrees of illumination, you'll also need a flashlight like the dimmable NESTOUT Flash-1 for focused light in one area. By using the included mini tripod to set it up on the ground or hanging it from your rope or tent, you can create visibility to and from your tent or campsite at night. The lights are custom accessories that attach to the NESTOUT Outdoor Battery power bank to provide portable light sources wherever you go.

3. POWER Disconnecting from the digital world is often one of the best parts of the camping experience. However, you'll still want access to a power source to recharge your headlamps, lanterns, flashlights, cameras and cellphone. Add a battery power bank or solar charger to your packing list so you aren't caught in the wilderness with no way to charge your electronics.

"Disconnecting from the digital world is often one of the best parts of the camping experience." NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© 17

A battery power bank like the heavy-duty, waterproof, shockproof NESTOUT Outdoor Battery offers fast-charging PD via USB-C. The stylish power pack looks like an old-school water bottle but contains lithium-ion batteries that deliver up to 20 watts to rapidly charge most electronics. You can also opt for a portable solar charger, perfect for hiking or backpacking. NESTOUT Solar-1 foldable solar chargers are lightweight and use high-quality SunPower Maxeon cells with conversion efficiency of up to 24%. The dual USB-A ports offer wide device compatibility and allow you to charge two devices simultaneously. The attached digital ammeter allows you to monitor the amount of solar energy being collected and transferred to your devices. The solar panels have a built-in pouch for storing cables and small items and adjustable stands to find the perfect angle to maximize sun exposure.

4. BUG DETERRENTS

Hunting Fishing

Camping Bowhunting

... EVERYTHING!

Ward off unwanted guests by packing bug deterrents to keep mosquitoes, flies and other insects off you and away from your campsite. Insect repellents like citronella candles, bug-proof clothing and bug spray allow you to enjoy the outdoors without bites and stings. You can also use mesh screens or netting on your tent or canopy so you can eat, cook and relax in peace.

5. COOKING ITEMS Cooking outdoors isn't too different from cooking at home, but you will need the right gear. For cooking, invest in a sturdy camping stove, cookware set, and lightweight and compact utensils for easy transport. While you can cook over a fire, you'll need a camping stove if it's raining or you can't light a fire during wildfire season. You'll also need durable pans, pots and a kettle to cook over a stove or fire. Remember to buy nonstick cookware for easy cooking and cleanup. In addition to stainless steel or plastic plates, you'll want utensils like spoons, forks, knives, ladles and spatulas.

"Eating healthy is an important goal for people looking to maintain or improve their physical health"

Highly Rated Diets to Support Heart Health Eating healthy is an important goal for people looking to maintain or improve their physical health, particularly as it relates to the heart. With often conflicting information available online and via social media, it may be difficult or downright confusing to find the eating plan for you. To help navigate the maze of information - and misinformation - experts assessed and scored the heart healthiness of several popular diets. Each diet was evaluated against the American Heart Association's guidance for a heart-healthy eating pattern, which emphasizes eating a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean proteins (including fish, low- or non-fat dairy and plant proteins), non-tropical plant oils and minimally processed foods; avoiding added sugars, salt and alcohol; and sticking to this guidance even when you're eating away from home. 20 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023

Diets received a rating between 0-100 and were ranked in tiers, with the resulting analysis published as an American Heart Association scientific statement in the journal "Circulation." "If implemented as intended, the top-tier dietary patterns align best with key features of heart-healthy eating and may be adapted to respect cultural practices, food preferences and budgets to enable people to eat this way for the long term," said Christopher D. Gardner, Ph.D., FAHA, chair of the scientific statement writing committee and the Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. Tier 1: Highest-Rated Eating Plans (scores higher than 85) The four patterns with the highest ratings align best with hearthealthy guidance, are flexible and provide an array of healthy foods to choose from.

DASH - With a perfect score by meeting all guidance, an eating pattern similar to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension plan emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, low-fat dairy, lean meats, poultry, fish and non-tropical oils. Nordic and Baltic diets are also examples of this eating pattern, which is low in salt, added sugar, alcohol, tropical oils and processed foods. Mediterranean - This pattern limits dairy while emphasizing fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fatty fish and extra-virgin olive oil. Because it includes moderate alcohol drinking, rather than avoiding or limiting consumption, it scored a few points lower than DASH. Vegetarian/Pescatarian - A plant-based eating pattern that includes fish. Vegetarian/Ovo/Lacto - Plant-based eating patterns that include eggs (ovo-vegetarian), dairy (lacto-vegetarian) or both (ovo-lacto vegetarian).

Tier 2: Vegan and Low-Fat Diets (scores 75-85) These eating patterns mostly align with heart-healthy criteria and emphasize important food groups but fell short of reaching the top tier due to limitations. Vegan - A plant-based eating pattern that includes no animal products. Restrictions in this plan may make it more difficult to follow long term or when dining out. Following a vegan eating pattern increases the risk of some nutrient deficiencies, which may be overcome by supplements or fortified foods. Low Fat - A diet that limits fat intake to less than 30% of total calories, including the volumetrics eating plan and therapeutic lifestyle change plan. These types of plans often treat all fats equally while the American Heart Association's guidance suggests replacing saturated fats with healthier fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Those who follow low-fat diets may overconsume less healthy sources of carbohydrates, such as added sugars and refined grains. However, these factors may be overcome with proper counseling and education from a health professional. To find the full results and learn more about heart-healthy eating, visit Heart.org. Meal prepping is a popular trend for many people (and families) who are working on healthy eating habits but are constantly on the go. No matter if you’re searching for a healthy family dinner, a quick lunch at home or an easy idea to meal prep for the week ahead, this Orange Shrimp Quinoa Bowl is perfect for seafood lovers who also enjoy a hint of spice. Start with quinoa then top with bell peppers, cucumbers, green onions, avocado and the perfectly pink shrimp. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and cilantro for some extra texture. Drizzle bowls with the remaining sauce. Find more wholesome and healthy recipes at Culinary.net.

Poached Egg Tostadas with Avocado-Tomatillo Salsa Servings: 4 (1 egg and 1/2 cup salsa per serving)

Mealtime conversations are also a perfect opportunity to connect with your loved ones. A study published in “New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development” showed these conversations help improve children’s vocabularies more than being read aloud to.

 Nonstick cooking spray  4 corn tortillas (6 inches each)  4 cups water  1 tablespoon white vinegar  4 large eggs

Making time for meals together shouldn’t require spending all night in the kitchen, however. A simple-toprepare ingredient like eggs can help you spend less time cooking and more time with family.

Salsa:  1 medium avocado, diced  1 medium Anaheim or poblano pepper, seeds and ribs discarded, diced  1 medium tomatillo, papery husk discarded, washed and dice  1/2 medium tomato, diced  1/4 cup diced red onion  1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro  2 tablespoons fresh lime juice  1 medium garlic clove, minced  1/8 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 400 F. Line baking sheet with aluminum foil. Lightly spray foil with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange tortillas in single layer on foil. Lightly spray tortillas with nonstick cooking spray. Using fork, pierce tortillas to prevent from filling with air. Bake 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Transfer to serving plates. In large skillet over high heat, bring water and vinegar to boil. Once water is boiling, reduce heat and simmer. Break egg into cup then carefully slip egg into simmering water. Repeat with remaining eggs, avoiding eggs touching in water. Simmer 3-5 minutes, or until egg whites are completely set and yolks are beginning to set but aren’t hard. Using slotted spoon, drain eggs. Place each egg on tostada. To make salsa: In medium bowl, gently stir together avocado, pepper, tomatillo, tomato, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, garlic and salt. Serve with tostadas.

Pet

Keep Pets Happy & Healthy this Holiday Season The holiday season means fun and festivities for all, but getting wrapped up in all the excitement and celebrations can lead to forgetting about safety and precautions, especially for pets. Consider these seven tips to help you spot potential hazards around the holidays and keep your pets healthy and happy.

Food for Thought:

Sweet treats and savory bites are treasured holiday pastimes for humans, but that can also mean things like chocolates, nuts and animal bones should be supervised carefully so your pets don't ingest something toxic or harmful. Other human foods to put on the do-not-share list include garlic, onions and grapes. It's also wise to keep your trash in a tightly sealed container or hidden somewhere your pet can't access.

Keep Calm and Carry On:

The holiday season brings people together for milestones and celebrations, but all the hoopla can be stressful for pets. From the loud music and new visitors to kids running around or fireworks going off, some pets can become overwhelmed.

42 POCONO FAMILY MAGAZINE© NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023

To help keep your pets comfortable and calm, try turning on a TV or some soothing music in a quiet room away from the noises or let them curl up on their favorite bed with a toy or treat to distract them. You can also try introducing a calming supplement like Zesty Paws Calming Bites for Dogs that may help with normal stress, nervousness and hyperactivity during stressful situations.

Watch Out for Tree Trimmings & Poisonous Plants:

While poinsettias and festive fir trees are holiday classics, they can also be extremely hazardous to pets. It's important to be careful about what you're bringing inside your home. Many holiday plants like holly, lilies, amaryllis and even pine needles from trees can be toxic if ingested. If ingestion does occur, contact a pet poison hotline or your veterinarian. If it's after hours or in the event of an emergency, find your nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic.

Watch the Weather:

Changing temperatures and harsh conditions can wreak havoc on human skin, so it's no surprise it can also affect pets' skin

and coats. You can try reducing their bathing frequency, keeping up with brushings and providing extra hydration to keep them feeling their best. Another way to keep your pet's skin and coat healthy is to add supplements that contain essential fatty acids. A fish oil, like Zesty Paws Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, provides omega-3s for dogs to help nourish their skin and coats.

Stick to a Routine:

Pets thrive on routines for feeding, potty breaks and exercise, so be conscious of how your holiday plans may shake things up. Try to stick to your regular schedule as closely as possible or consider asking a friend or relative to help if you'll be away during regular feeding or outdoor break times.

Spend Some Quality Time:

In addition to providing companionship and love, spending time with pets can also reduce stress, anxiety and depression; ease loneliness; and encourage exercise and playfulness. Even though you may be traveling or partying with friends, be sure to spend some quality time with your fur babies this holiday season, too.

Compassionate Care That Lasts Forever Located at Stroudsburg Cemetery on Dreher Avenue 570-420-9599www.CreeksidePet.net / 570-421-4501 www.CreeksidePet.net

Give Them Gifts:

Humans aren't the only ones who love to get gifts. Few things beat the look on dog's faces when you pull out a new toy or treat for them to enjoy. Whether it's a new leash, ball or cozy bed, be sure you have a little something to give your furry family members this holiday season as well. Seeking to Preserve Veterans' Stories of Service & Sacrifice Whether it's pride, pain, inspiration, nostalgia or a combination of sentiments, any time veterans tell their stories, there's a good chance they'll evoke strong emotions from both the tellers and their audiences. Those feelings are often well-warranted as many veterans have been through intense experiences in the name of service to their country. United States Army Staff Sergeant Shilo A. Harris' story is no exception. Although he wanted to be a soldier his entire life, it wasn't until after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 that Harris felt compelled to enlist in the Army. He went to basic training at age 27 and began his career as a cavalry scout stationed in Germany. During his second deployment to Iraq, his life forever changed. On Feb. 19, 2007, Harris was on patrol when his military vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED). The estimated 700-pound IED, which was buried in the road, blew

the vehicle "to pieces," killed three soldiers and critically injured Harris and the vehicle's driver. While he survived the explosion, Harris spent the next 48 days in a medically induced coma while doctors worked to heal the third-degree burns covering 35% of his body and multiple fractured bones. Harris lost both ears, three fingers and the tip of his nose. He underwent more than 75 surgeries and three years of intensive rehabilitation to regain basic abilities and maintain an independent lifestyle. Harris retired from the Army in 2010 and is determined to keep a grateful outlook despite struggling with post-traumatic stress and ongoing care needs. "I do have bad days, but for the most part I live my life because life is worth living," Harris said.

He now shares his experiences through motivational speaking and writing books. He also submitted his oral history to the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP). The Veterans History Project is a national effort to collect, preserve and make accessible the first-hand remembrances of U.S. military veterans from World War I through more recent conflicts and peacetime missions so future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand what they saw, did and felt during their service. The stories veterans carry with them are powerful and shape who they are. Stories can hold valuable lessons, details of accomplishments and battles won or memories of friendship and camaraderie. They can also serve as reminders of sacrifice and hardship. Participating with VHP can be as simple as recording a 30-minute (or longer) video or audio interview sharing details of your service. Veterans, or families of veterans, may also submit a minimum 20-page diary, journal or unpublished memoir and/or 10 original photos or letters. Each collection is added to the permanent archives of the Library of Congress then made accessible to the public online and in-person.

It's easier than ever to improve your hearing Imagine this: You're having dinner with friends. You know that someone just said something funny, because everyone else at the table is laughing. You're too embarrassed to admit that you didn't hear the joke, so you laugh along with everyone else. For many adults, living with hearing loss is a daily struggle. But it doesn't have to be. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created a new category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, providing easier access to affordable, safe and effective hearing aids for millions of adults who believe they may have mild to moderate hearing loss. More than 30 million adults in the U.S. have some degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss makes it harder to communicate with family and friends and can lead to isolation. loss is associated with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, dementia, reduced mobility and falls. Today, it's simpler than ever to buy effective hearing aids that can improve your ability to talk with family and friends, communicate with physicians, and hear music, movies and TV. Adults (18 and older) who believe they have mild to moderate hearing loss can purchase OTC hearing aids without a medical exam, a prescription or a professional fitting. You can buy OTC hearing aids directly in stores or online. They typically cost less than prescription hearing aids.

Here are some other facts about OTC hearing aids:

 Research from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), part of the National

Institutes of Health (NIH), shows that OTC hearing aids can be as effective as prescription hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss.

 You control the settings for OTC hearing aids yourself, and you may be able to adjust them in more ways than you could with prescription hearing aids.

 OTC hearing aids include labels with information you

should know before buying, such as symptoms that indicate a more serious problem that may require treatment from a physician.

 To help the public easily identify OTC hearing aids, the

devices are required to include the words "OTC" and "hearing aid" on the outside packaging. Hearing aids can be life-changing, but only about one in four adults in the U.S. who could benefit from them has ever used them. In fact, people diagnosed with hearing loss wait, on average, nearly 10 years before obtaining hearing aids.

What are some signs that OTC hearing aids may be right for you?

 Speech or other sounds seem quiet or muffled.

 You have trouble hearing when you're in a group, in a noisy

area, on the phone, or when you can't see who is talking.

 You have to ask others to speak more slowly or clearly, to talk louder, or to repeat what they said.

 When you watch TV or listen to music, you need to turn the volume up higher than other people.

OTC hearing aids are not for children or for adults with severe or profound hearing loss. These individuals should work directly with a hearing health care professional or a physician to address their hearing loss. Why are OTC hearing aids now available? Experts in science, technology and hearing health care are working with researchers, health professionals and the public to find safe and effective ways to improve access to hearing health care for adults. This issue is a public health priority, especially as the number of older adults in the U.S. continues to grow. The availability of OTC hearing aids is a major step toward hearing health care that is less expensive and easier to access.
