The Last Five Years
‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go!’ by Dr. Seuss is such a beautiful book, and I love that parents give it to their kids who are graduating from kindergarten to college. What did Gwen and James Davis tell their little girl, Viola, that would imbue her with such confidence to kick down obstacles and create opportunities for others? In the many years I’ve lived with her in my head, I’ve felt a kinship with Viola Desmond. She was small (just under 5 feet), Black, confident, smart, and had a vision for what she wanted; she was just like me. I’ve looked at her and thought: I’m going to achieve the things I set out for myself and nothing is going to stop me; racism and illness will not cut me down like it did Viola at
After Controlled Damage had its incredible run here five years ago, I was so happy and proud and decided I’d start treating myself. As I settled into my flight home to Toronto after the play closed, I looked out the window and said, “let’s travel more!”
And the universe coughed, and then laughed and laughed and laughed.
But, five years on, I had the last laugh. Unlike Viola, who was unable to fulfill her dream of opening a chain of salons across the company, my dreams to become an honest-to-goodness working writer came true. I was hired on one of the longest running television shows in the country, published my fourth play, moved to Hollywood, worked for Disney on a hit tv show, and had a play produced at the Stratford Festival. I made my ancestors proud. With stars in my eyes, and hope in my heart, I said, “Nothing can
And the universe winced, and then laughed and laughed and laughed.
One day after my Stratford play closed and 3 months before rehearsControlled Damage, I was diagnosed with aggressive bladder cancer. But...I’m supposed to fulfill what Viola did not...I’m only 53.
We do the best that we can and hope the trees we plant (under which we will never sit) provide shade and comfort for those that come after us. we are made of stars. Ha!

As artistic director of a Canadian regional theatre, one gets a lot of script submissions in a variety of forms. Sometimes they are hastily written scripts, badly laid out. Sometimes they are disorganized emails with hopes and dreams but no actual script to read. Sometimes they are just unreadable. Then there’s Andrea Scott and her excellent creative work, bundled into a great pitch meeting at a Toronto Starbucks, where not only was the story compelling, but the writer herself was clearly a force of nature.
As soon as Andrea told me the story of her play’s genesis and, of course, being familiar with the incredible legacy of Viola Desmond, I was hooked. Don’t tell Andrea, but I knew within moments that Neptune should produce the world premiere of Controlled Damage. Neptune is grateful and I am relieved she sought me out! That production, back in early 2020, was the last show to complete its run before a certain pandemic shut down the world. It was a massive hit.
The production sold out, winning four awards at the Theatre Nova Scotia Merritt Awards, including Outstanding Production of the year.
Controlled Damage is exactly the kind of story I want to see on the Neptune stage. A Nova Scotian story detailing important points in our history. It is our commitment to see these stories on our stages.
We are excited to now bring you this joint production of Controlled Damage, produced in partnership with the National Arts Centre, Ottawa. We welcome a new team to Neptune Theatre, to work on this play and present it to you.
Director Cherissa Richards has gathered a wonderful group of artists both on and off stage. Many thanks to Nina Lee Aquino, Artistic Director English Theatre at the NAC. What a joy to co-produce this production together. Along with NAC Producer David Abel, we appreciate their vision and commitment to the continued support of this story.
Finally, welcome to you, our audience. I believe this production to be an important one and I know you will share with me a great sense of joy at seeing Viola Desmond remembered in this way.
We also thank Viola Desmond’s family and friends and indeed her legacy for this opportunity to continue to learn and grow from her brave stand.
Jeremy Webb Artistic Director
We are excited to welcome you to the first play of 2025 - Controlled Damage. A sold out smash-hit, this show was the last full production run here at Neptune before the shutdowns in 2020. We are thrilled to be partnering with the National Arts Centre (NAC) to bring Andrea Scott’s script back to our stage with a new vision and director.
It is extraordinarily meaningful to have the opportunity to share Viola Desmond’s story with you. We know the quick facts of the Roseland Theatre, but to be able to celebrate the person and gain a deeper understanding of her life, community, and the realities of the time she lived, is what makes theatre special.
We are incredibly proud of our talented team, who have poured their hearts into bringing this story to life. And we are deeply grateful to you, our audience, for supporting the art of storytelling and keeping these narratives alive.
