Welcome to Neptune Theatre and the twenty third glorious year of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

This show was created in 2003 and back then, I was the actor in the show. In those days I was able to switch from character, to character, to character. I had the energy to jump around the stage as Fezziwig, the knees that could crawl the floor, cowering as Ebenezer and enough pep to play Cratchit skating on imaginary ice. Those days have gone. (Cue: sad violin music.)

Now, young whipper-snapper Rhys Bevan-John continues the tradition. He does it so well. But, here’s the thing: Rhys has now been doing it for eleven years and so surely he, like his predecessor, has to ice aching limbs, pop an Advil or two and lie in Epsom Salt baths after each and every performance?!

I give my heartfelt thanks to each and every artist that has worked on this show over the decades. In particular, we must congratulate Jessica Lewis (Stage manager and Lighting Designer) who has been with the show seventeen years, puppeteer Simon Henderson (twelve years) and Rhys Bevan-John, who was there at the beginning for two years and then returned for an epic run to the present day.

It was never a plan to create a show that lasted decades. It was always a make work project. Yet, here we are. Now, five year olds that had this production as their first experience of live theatre, are bringing their kids to giggle and squeal. It’s an honour and a blessing.

Thanks for joining us.

I wonder if this is the longest running theatrical show in Canada? Maybe the longest running Christmas Carol? Regardless, it’s our pleasure to spook you, make you laugh and offer you another serving of holiday magic this year. Holiday theatre is so important to a community. We all come together, generations connecting as a family unit and we create memories together. I hope that this is the case for you and that Scrooge’s journey towards redemption reminds you of what is important.

Welcome to Neptune Theatre for this 22nd year of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol! Over the years, this team has become like family, and we know the countdown to Christmas is truly on when the Carol team arrives for rehearsals.

This classic Christmas tale reminds us that the holidays are about more than what we have, it’s about what we can share. I am thrilled that we are once again supporting the vital work of Feed Nova Scotia during the run of this show. From December 629, we are collecting non-perishable food contributions and cash donations in our lobbies. All donations and proceeds will be delivered for the New Year.

Whether it is your 22nd time, your first time, or somewhere in between - thank you for coming and supporting live theatre.

Wishing you and yours a merry, warm, and bright holiday season.
