When Jeremy asked me to direct this season’s holiday show I immediately started crying. I can’t help it, I have A LOT of feelings. He directed me in The Wizard of Oz at Festival Antigonish, my very first paid, professional contract, and we were on stage together the last time this show was on the Neptune stage. So for my third trip down the yellow brick road, I am honoured to be leading the way. The holiday show is such a special event for so many people and every year I look forward to the traditions that are being built.

Some shows feel like a warm, cozy, well worn blanket and The Wizard of Oz is one of them. It reminds me of holidays, family, adventure, and discovering Dorothy Gale, one of many independent, brave, young women in media and literature that would shape who I am. It remains vivid and colourful and a beacon of joyful imagination. This building, Neptune Theatre, feels like home. I came up through the theatre school, started my career here and every time I walk through the doors I feel at home. This show feels like home. I wish that feeling for everyone who comes to experience theatre here. To feel comfortable, safe, welcome and treasured. You, the audience, are the most important element in our magic making and we invite you to join us with open hearts, curious minds and a playful spirit. The most admirable quality I see in Dorothy is her curiosity and her quick ability to love without judgement.

The cast, band, crew, admin and design/creative team on this adventure have been nothing short of miraculous and have created a sense of community and family. It’s full of people who care deeply about this art form and the importance of creating these magical worlds for families and friends to come together and enjoy. It has truly been a merry old time in Oz.

With a whole new generation rediscovering this show through the lens of Wicked, which I LOVE, it felt important to remember that this is the source material. This is the treasure that has continued to inspire and delight. The simplicity, yet importance of the lessons it reveals remain incredibly relevant today. Help those who need it. Accept people for who they are. Your family, whether by blood or by choice, are your home, there is no place like it. And don’t mess with a woman’s dog.

Welcome to this magical land far beyond the end of that very famous rainbow. For so many decades children, families and millions of grownups have been whisked away to Oz to spend a fantastical few hours with a scarecrow, a rather jittery lion, a man made of tin and a couple of witches. Like Dorothy, our lives have been brightened by this story, by the film and by the stage show of Frank L. Baum’s The Wizard of Oz.

With all of the international buzz around the Wicked two-part movie extravaganza, it seemed the perfect time to take Neptune Theatre back to the Emerald City. The last time we took our audiences there, in 2010, the director of this production (Michelle Langille) was in the ensemble along with our Cowardly Lion, Ian Gilmore. A certain Artistic Director (before he changed jobs) was lucky enough to be cast as the Wizard. All I can remember was being covered in peanut butter to keep the wee dog playing Toto (that was Butch) close to me. the dog tired of the peanut butter and would wander away; once accidently falling into the audience during a Dorothy & Professor Marvel scene.

The Wizard of Oz is just one of many shows this season that we hope will bring audiences joy this year. Starting with Mamma Mia and ending the season with Come From Away is a very specific decision to fill your hearts. There really is “no place like home.,” wherever that is.

Next up on this very stage is the delicious, bawdy comedy Mad Madge, which I get to direct with a wonderful Nova Scotian cast. I hope you will come back to see that show, but perhaps leave anyone under the age of fourteen at home!

In January I cannot wait to tell you all about the 2026-2027 Season. If it’s possible, it looks like it will be even more spectacular than the current season!

Congratulations to the cast, crew, band and team ‘behind the curtain’ of this production. Have a wonderful visit with us, here at Neptune. Our awesome box office and front of house team are here to make sure that your trip down the yellow brick road is a joyful one.

JEREMY AS OZ, LAURA CASWELL AS THE WICKED WITCH, NEPTUNE 2010
JEREMY AS OZ, WITH MICHELLE LANGILLE AS AN OZIAN, NEPTUNE 2010

On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcome to The Wizard of Oz - a story that reminds us that courage, heart, and hope can lead us home.

At Neptune, our work is powered by imagination and sustained by generosity. As a not-for-profit theatre, we exist because of people who believe in the magic of live performance - people like you. If tonight’s performance stirs something in you, I invite you to take a moment to support Neptune. By scanning the QR code in this program, you can help us create inspiring productions, nurture local artists, and ensure that Neptune remains a home for creativity and connection for generations to come.

Thank you for being part of our journey down this yellow brick road. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful, hope-filled holiday season.

Welcome to Neptune Theatre!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S

It’s such a joy to have you with us for our holiday programming - this year’s production of The Wizard of Oz

This beloved story, filled with heart, courage, and imagination, reminds us that no matter where life takes us, there truly is “no place like home.” And for us, home is here - welcoming our community through these doors year after year. Every season, families gather here at Neptune to laugh, cheer, and be swept up in the magic of theatre. Sometimes, we are lucky enough to have become a generational family activity, and get to witness children growing up season after season.

We’re so grateful you’ve made us part of your celebrations, and we hope tonight creates memories you’ll treasure.

The adventure doesn’t end here! The second half of our season is filled with incredible productions we can’t wait to share. And if you’re looking for a perfect holiday gift, tickets to Neptune are a wonderful way to give the joy of live theatre.

From our Neptune family to yours, happy holidays!

The timeless tale, in which young Dorothy Gale travels from Kansas over the rainbow to the magical Land of Oz, continues to thrill audiences worldwide.

The MGM film The Wizard of Oz, based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel, first premiered in Hollywood on August 15, 1939.

One of the most successful novels in American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sold out instantly, became a cutlrual sensation, and sold over three million copies before entering the public domain in 1956.

This stage adaptation, presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company, premiered in London on December 17, 1987.
