@NEPTUNETHEATRE
Neptune Theatre is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.
As artists, we are grateful to work and build community here. As stewards of culture, we commit to continuing to improve our relations with Indigenous people and upholding values of collaboration and inclusivity in all that we do.
We recommend that masks be worn in our venues. As our theatres place the audience so close to the action on stage, masking helps protect not only audience members but also the actors, who cannot wear masks when performing. By keeping them safe, we all can help prevent COVID-related performance cancellations.
Any videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. The use of cameras, cellular phones, paging devices and all other recording devices is strictly prohibited in the theatre. Please ensure all cellular phones and watch alarms are turned off. Neptune Theatre is a scent-free environment.
Neptune Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Neptune Theatre engages professional technicians represented by IATSE Local 680.

Neptune Theatre acknowledges the support of our government partners:

Casey and Diana was originally commissioned by the Stratford Festival, Ontario, Canada.
The premiere production opened on June 1, 2023 at the Stratford Festival Studio Theatre. Antoni Cimolino, Artistic
and Anita Gaffney, Executive Director

There are seven things I’d like to say to you before you watch this production of Casey and Diana:
1. I really, genuinely hope you like the play and that you’re glad you came to see it instead of staying home and watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which is super good this season. Sutton is such good TV.
2. Ultimately this is a play about capacity; both in the sense of what humans are capable of, and the maximum amount one can hold without bursting. Capacity grows when fed compassion, patience, and kindness.
3. “Great consideration for one another, that’s what’s going to save the world.” Casey House Founder June Callwood.
4. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to behave during times of great divi1sion and intolerance. As much as I aspire to be someone who can meet fear and hatred with strength and kindness, I also understand the need at times to run away and hide for a while. I’ve run away on a few occasions and I probably will again.
5. Neptune Theatre is such an incredible gift to Canadian playwrights. Thank you to you and your audiences for your strong commitment to home-grown work.
6. Steel Magnolias is just as good the 10th time you watch it. If you’re into that sort of thing.
7. In the end, once you’ve exhaled and you’re dead, all that’s left of you is the impact you’ve had on other people. Give wisely, because what you give is immortal.

CHAIRS’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the final show of the 2024-2025 season! A journey that started in an enchanted forest ends in 1991 Toronto, with this stunning drama by Canadian playwright Nick Green. This heart-wrenching exploration of the ravages of HIV & AIDS, is also a celebration of Queer Joy and the power of empathy and love.
I am so proud of the work our casts, crews, and admin team have put into the 2024-25 Season - and the fun doesn’t stop, as we’re heading right into rehearsals for Mamma Mia!
It’s an exciting time here at Neptune Theatre, and I hope you’ll join us as a subscriber for the 2025-26 Season.
You can talk to one of our excellent Box Office staff about all the ways a subscription saves you money and puts you at the front of the line for perks, or visit us online at neptunetheatre.com today.
Scott McGaw Chair, Neptune Theatre Foundation

I am so thrilled to welcome you to Casey & Diana, the last show of our 2024-25 Season. This beautiful, poignant, heart-felt script has captured the attention of theatre goers across the country, and we’re delighted to present our production. Director Richie Wilcox and his team have taken playwright Nick Green’s words and lifted them off the page into something truly special.
If you enjoy today’s performance, I’d encourage you to become a subscriber to our 2025-26 Season! The best way to save and enjoy multiple shows a year, a subscription also helps us support Canadian artists right here at home. You can speak to a Box Office Agent, or visit us online at neptunetheatre.com, today to learn more about the different subscription options available.
Kimberlee Stadelmann Executive Director

I did not experience the AIDS crisis firsthand but I have definitely felt its impact throughout my life. Growing up in Cape Breton in the 1980s and 90s I was subjected to all of the misinformed news and headlines within mainstream media surrounding the once-called “Gay Cancer”. The hatred and vitriol pointed towards the gay community at the time seemed like it was spreading as far and wide as the virus itself. As a young queer boy I grew up in fear of AIDS, which in turn made me afraid to be gay, which in essence, made me afraid of myself. This is not a unique story.
The first documented AIDS case in Canada was in 1982. Here we are 43 years later. While medical advances have eliminated the death sentence attached to AIDS, the stigmas, misinformation and even denial of its existence persists. The political context of today seems eerily parallel to the thinking of government parties back in the 1980s who refused to take action and looked at it is a curing of society of an unwanted marginalized demographic.
I feel honoured to tell this powerful queer story right now, today, in Halifax. Thank you to the playwright Nick Green for doing the research and creating a beautiful story so that we can see real human lives when we think about the AIDS crisis and not just statistics. Through Casey & Diana we are able to see how all of us were affected and still are affected by the actions, and inactions, of others.
I hope it serves as a reminder of who has come before. Who we have lost.
And a reminder to be kind and compassionate to each other.
Richie Wilcox Director
