Hi, Everyone!

By Paula Johnson email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hi Everyone, Wow! This month sure started with a bang with all those Hurricanes! Keeping all those affected in my prayers as I am sure you are also. I don’t think I will ever get over Katrina. She was a bitter pill to swallow. I certainly hope their recovery will be a lot quicker for those in Texas and in Florida. So what do think of these cooler temps? I am really enjoying them. And with that, thoughts of Halloween! I am sure you all have seen the latest craze, The Witches Hat, made with material from Dollar Tree. I know everyone must be making these or maybe it is just the crafters who sell at shows that have been buying up all the mess and other supplies. I went looking for the DT mesh at every Dollar Tree on the Westbank and none was to be found! Than I decided to see if either Family Dollar or Dollar General had any. I ran all over town for 2 days looking for the 6”mesh. Finally on Sunday afternoon my husband said, we didn’t try the Dollar General next to Dollar Zone”. Well, I was almost jumping for joy because we finally found what I needed to make this wreath. Of course the mesh, ribbon, and pipe cleaners cost more than a dollar but, that was okay, I FINALLY had what I needed! I did purchase the witch’s hat at Dollar Tree, they had lots of those. For this project I used 1 roll each of purple, black, and orange 6 inch mesh, black, orange and purple pipe cleaners, and 3 bolts of ribbon (there is only 9 feet on each bolt and you will only have a little left. I cut the mesh in 24 inch pieces, the ribbon in 12 inches, and the pipe cleaners were cut in half. Don’t forget to dovetail the ends of your ribbon before adding them. I gathered each piece of mesh, added two pieces of ribbon (mix and match them or use the same pattern, your choice) and bundled these together and secured with pipe cleaner. I did reinforce my hat with a metal coat hanger. After I had all these bundled together I had to decide whether I was going to just insert the ends into the garland hat or take the first row of the garland off. I decided to take the garland off. It was really easy to attach the bundles to the frame. I also decided to make a couple of pom pom spiders to add to my hat but, you can add whatever you want. I removed the BOO and buckle from my hat because I just didn’t want it. But you can leave it on if you would like. I also decided to add a bow at the tip of the hat. This really was a fun and easy project. I did not have my Witch’s Hat for long. Our daughter decided it would look better on the door at her house. That’s okay because I bought enough mesh for 2 hats. Just hope they have another hat at Dollar Tree. Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next craft project be? Mine........I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun!

Tony’s Take CHATTANOOGA BITES OFF MUCH MORE THAN IT CAN CHEW CHOO-CHOO! Despite the absence of key defensive players for the second week in a row, the LSU Tigers thoroughly dominated the Chattanooga Moccasins Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. For the first time ever, fans making under $300,000 a year were able to consume alcoholic beverages in their own section legally, the Skyline Club, in the upper reaches of the South end zone. While Tiger fans were belting down a few brews and assorted wine selections, the Tigers were belting the hapless Moccasins around, a team who also had several key players not make the trek to Baton Rouge and thus not available to at least try to stem the Harvey and Irma-like deluge coming from the Purple and Gold.

MOBYMAX SUMMER WINNER Seventh grader Riley Sucato won the MobyMax Summer Learning Competition. Riley dedicated over 25 hours of her summer to this learning opportunity. She celebrated this accomplishment over pizza with friends. Pictured are Chloe Sagal, Isabela Rivera, Riley Sucato, Abigail Brown, and Ava Cooper

Chattanooga is the home of Moon Pies and Lookout Mountain. The Mocs had to look out nearly every play against LSU and probably felt the Tigers had mooned them after every down. Unlike the 1954 previous meeting of these two teams, where 11,000 LSU fans pretended to be Tulane fans in the then 60,000 seat capacity Tiger Stadium, this version of LSU did not give up an early lead and thus did not have to scramble late in the game to win by a touchdown as they did under the coaching of Gaynell Tinsley, a former Tiger great. However…and it seems there’s always a ‘however’ with these Tigers….the special team play still is mediocre, the penalties are unconscionable and the junior and senior leadership on defense has a ways to go before they’re ready to play Auburn. On offense, the red zone is still treated with indifference too often and LSU’s placekicking game is the worst it has been in recent memory. Cameron Gamble can drive kickoffs into the end zone only with a ten to 15 mile an hour tailwind and LSU missed two out of three field goal attempts Saturday, making it three misses for the year in two games. And outside containment still stinks on kickoffs. D.J. Clark is the most special of all special teamers, having returned two punts for touchdowns Saturday night but had one of them was called back for holding. So far, the freshmen and sophomores have held this defense together with Christian LaCouture the most reliable of the seniors, along with a slightly overmatched Greg Gilmore. Senior linebacker Donnie Alexander was literally pinballed into an outside position on one first quarter pre-snap by middle linebacker Devin White, who is emerging, along with Corey Thompson, as the leader of Dave Armanda’s squad. White is the most solid compact defender LSU has had inside since Booger McFarland played nose tackle back in the Gerry DiNardo days. Perhaps the fastest linebacker in college football, White has taken to the position like he wants to be the best inside ‘backer in America. If LSU can develop even one Alabama-style interior defensive lineman, they will be as good as the SEC will have this year. There’s plenty of quality competition at linebacker and in the secondary and when Arden Key returns, the outside containment will take a quantum leap forward. We still haven’t seen that much pass rushing pressure from LSU but with young player development and the return of Key, hopefully Saturday night against Mississippi State, it should be coming sooner than later. Those fans waiting for more razzledazzle from offensive coordinator Matt Canada will probably see it against the Bulldogs. The Tigers have a healthy, legitimate senior quarterback who can read defenses and has a more than adequate arm. Saturday, he hit four different receivers with passes of more than 20 yards and the Tigers show they have depth at the wideout positions that will only improve with reps. The Tigers still need to pass more than 17 times a game and watching freshman quarterback Myles Brennan hand off all but three times during his second half coming-out party in Tiger Stadium was underwhelming. The Tigers, like the crowd, seemed more than willing to mail it in during most of the fourth quarter and it was hard to tell at the final gun which entity had checked out first. Even the student section was decimated by the beginning of the fourth quarter, a very unLSU-like development. Perhaps the first non-humid, under 80 and even 70 degree September football game ever played in September in Tiger Stadium had something to do with it. But don’t make your plans for any playoff games just yet, Tiger fans. This isn’t your Miles team but it sure isn’t ready to be labeled the highly polished renovated offensive and defensive squads that most of us are wanting to see. It’s a good offense and defense but nobody fears either one just yet. The installation of fear, brought about by consistency, pressure and concentration, is a ways down the road. Could it get here by the first weekend of November? If it doesn’t, chalk up another one for Nick Saban and the Tide. Because they may stumble but never fall. They can be had but never embarrassed. LSU can’t say that so far this year. They better get to work making it happen.

After the 1st few weeks of football what exactly do we know? We know that LSU has a definitive change in team attitude. Not to mention an offense that is actually fun to watch and hard to recognize. We also know that Tulane has a pretty good team lead by a ton of former parish players and that they never should have gotten rid of the old and now new angry. Finally, it seems that the “no-name’ Saints Defense has the personnel to conjure up memories of the “Dome Patrol” and that A.P. is the best back on the team! In prep football, we know that Belle Chasse is definitely missing their starting QB and RB while, South Plaquemines is tougher, faster and more durable than a year ago. The Hurricanes completely dominated in Week 1 and in Week 2 Belle Chasse showed the Dr. Jekyll side by defeating lowly Archbishop Shaw while the Hurricanes turned into Mr. Hyde losing to West St John. So, I know this is a prep report but let’s dive into some LSU football for a few paragraphs. After going through an entire day of people saying LSU and Coach Oeaux were overrated and could possibly lose to BYU the game was finally played. Not only did this team prove them and everyone else wrong they through it back at them. Granted, BYU is not Michigan or FSU but we all know how hard it is to keep a team from passing the midfield (ie see LSU vs Bama 2010). This Tiger Team showed more team speed than the Jamaican 4x100 relay. Oh, did I forget to mention that they did all of that while 13 guys were not dressed out including 3 defensive starters, (1 named Arden Key). Now some you might say but the offense was the same…pound ..pound…pound the football. Well, when was the last time that a team DID NOT stack 9 in the box and dare us to throw the ball? When the defense plays you straight up and you have a potential Heisman candidate at RB and a slimmer, faster backup RB than guess what…you run the darn ball. Even better then that, when was the last time you watched an LSU game and could not tell who was getting the ball nor what hole were they going to run the ball in? I give Coach Oeaux, Coach Aranda & Coach Canada all A+’s so far and not to mention throw Austin Thomas in there for leading a recruiting effort that saw 17..yes 17 True Freshmen play week 1! The Tigers did what they had to do against Chattanooga and I will end it by saying this; Bring on StarkVegas and Mississippi St and Geaux Coach Oeaux Geaux!! Let’s get to the point of this article and talk about some prep football. The opening game of the year was for the “Battle of the Boot” and South Plaquemines came away victorious 8-2. As stated above, South Plaquemines completely dominated the game and especially at the lines of scrimmage. The Cardinals tried to key in on Eli Bourgeois but he still managed a touchdown receiving and 2 interceptions with 1 of them a TD that was called back. This game was not nearly as close as the score says as the Canes had numerous chances inside the Belle Chasse red zone and could not find the end zone. This was a great start to the Lyle Fitte reign and ended a very long streak of Belle Chasse dominance. Last week saw South Plaquemines on the road against West St. John. Of course, the Rams were the team that ousted the Canes from the playoffs a year ago and the question that was answered was “could South Plaq refocus after such an emotional win in Week 1?” That was answered when the Canes took the bus ride home from Edgard after suffering a 34-0 defeat. There is not much to report about the South Plaquemines – West St John game. All, I will say is that the Canes did not look like the same team that we saw in Week 1…in fact it looked as if the Cards and Canes switched uniforms for Week 2 as the penalties and turnovers made its way to West St. John while the dominance stopped at Hoss Memstas. The good news for Belle Chasse is who would you want to play after such a bad opening week…well Archbishop Shaw of course! The Cardinals completely shut down Shaw in their 16-0 victory. To explain it mildly, if you parked in the parking lot and walked to purchase a ticket than you actually travelled further than the entire Shaw offense would all day long. The Cardinals held the Eagles to -5 yards rushing and 27…yes 27 Total Yards. This was definitely the performance that Coach Meyers needed from his team after such a heartbreaking loss in Week 1. Week 3 should be a good one for Belle Chasse as well as they travel back to Hoss Memstas, although on a short week as the game is on Thursday, to take on Coach Meyers’ old squad in the Higgins Hurricanes. Now, this team is just as fast as our own Canes team but just not quite well rounded overall. They were forced to forfeit Week 1 due to a brawl against Helen Cox and completely got hammered by McDonogh 35 last week. PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! I have been looking for slots while the bull action has been hot. The slots are in transition as the river is dropping and cleaning up. I have not been on the water much so that is not helping either. Family and property have dictated a lot of my time. I had 2 couples that just wanted to fish a bit and sight see. At our first stop we landed a nice keeper on our first cast. I hate when this happens.

It usually means the rest of the day will be a pick. If we can get another right a way we might have a good day. Unfortunately The fishing was a pick the rest of the day. In our quest to reel in some slot redfish we stumbled across 1 good trout. There was plenty of action with rat reds and sheepshead to occupy our morning. Everybody was getting fish but the slots were not jumping in the boat. Every now and then we would get some fish worthy of joining us for supper in the evening. We finished with a good showing but by no means a banner day. As we were coming in I detoured and went visiting some gators. This is one of the things they had also requested. While going down a pass I stopped the boat to let a steer swim across in front of us. The current was quite strong and it was 23 feet deep.

CALL US TODAY...SELL IT TOMORROW! I next had a bull red trip. They had gotten them stacked all week. When we got out there were no birds at all and no bait showing anywhere. I headed east looking for some signs of fish. Many others were on the radio and finding only sharks. I noticed a slick and we set up shop. They were big and put up a great fight but not what we wanted. We also lost a lot of equipment to sharks. 2 guys were using a large green curly tail grub. One of them hooks and lands a good trout. This perked us up a bit. We ended up getting 8 of them before the school moved on and we lost them. We spent the rest of the day looking for clear water and getting a few slots. The biggest red we got was this one. It was a perfect tournament fish right at 26.98 inches. Squeezed the tail but could not touch the 27 inch line or just on the shy edge of it.

Had another trip and the snapper were getting into the rigs due to the strong current . We had sharks also eating out gear and attacking our sinkers. This was a great way to introduce her to red snapper fishing. Time was against us so we called it and headed in with what we could get out of the rig. We ran out of 20 and 28 ounce sinkers. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM CHARTERS

We found enough to make them happy but they had no idea of what they had waiting for them at the dock. Captain Boola was loading 3 monster gators on a truck. It made her forget about the good fishing day she had when she was able to pose with this fat 14 foot monster.

FANS WILL TRULY RELISH THE CHANGES IN TIGER STADIUM THIS YEAR

Cardinals victory. Who knows, with another victory at Hoss Memstas maybe the Cardinals can work out a deal to play all their games there. South Plaquemines gets to welcome in Riverdale and coach Willie Brooks. Coach Brooks came to I had to pick them up and hold them like a puppy. Could it really be that the Rebels after spending time at DeLaSalle the year before and of course he is the former Helen Tiger Stadium had purchased 21st century condiment dispensers? One for Cox coach.. mustard, one for catsup, one for relish…..and ONE FOR TABASCO SAUCE! The Rebels defeated Grace King, 37- 6 in Week 1 and Haynes 35-6 in Week 2. So to say that On every level, at every concession stand. And the concession stands South Plaquemines is a step up in competition is the same odds as betting that Ed Daniels are finally reflecting the concessions long overdue Tiger fans accustomed is going to drool all over JT Curtis on Friday Night Football. I mean the Rebels have already to trench-like crowding and service areas. This was one of the least surpassed their win totals of the last two seasons and have as many wins as those same two expensive and more obvious moves during the offseason to improve the experience in Death years had combined. The Rebels are led by Antonio Joseph and they are off to their best start Valley. It was part of a media midday outing last Thursday as Tiger facilities and management since 2009. Even though, Riverdale is 4A they are not as good as Belle Chasse and you can leaders Ronnie Haliburton and Todd Jeansonne led dozens of media folk from the west entrance expect another good night of football for the Canes. of the venerable stadium to the sixth level above the South end zone now known as the Skyline In Week 4, both parish teams are at home against schools from New Orleans as Belle Chasse Club. hosts KIPP and South Plaquemines welcomes Cohen. When at first glance this game sounds like one that should be a cake walk for the Cardinals. But, when you dig deeper, you see that the The Club, a collection of 1,500 bench seats along six rows HIGH ABOVE Tiger Stadium, is a new Bobcats have a coach with winning pedigree, in former MC35 assistant Jared Gourrier. Not to concept in seating for LSU. Here, one can dine on tailgating fare at no extra cost - hot dogs, mention, this is a team that beat Shaw in the jamboree and gave St Michael’s of Baton Rouge a hamburgers, sliders, a rotating pasta salad, potato salad or creole cole slaw, potato chips and run for their money in a 21-14 loss. rotating entrees including red beans and rice, jambalaya, white beans and tasso with rice. All The Hurricanes should have no problems when they take on the Green Hornets. This is easily one this food is included as an all-you-can eat special when you purchase a ticket in the Club section of the weakest teams on the South Plaquemines schedule and should see a lot of points as well for the game. And they don’t have to be season tickets. Like the rest of the Tiger tickets, they as playing time for younger Canes. are priced by the attractiveness of the game and can be purchased individually. For example, In our next article we will recap Weeks 3 & 4 and Preview Weeks 5 & 6. We thank you for last Saturday night you could have dined and watched the Tigers defang the Chattanooga Mocs reading and look forward to seeing you at the games! for only $45 for a ticket (no Tradition Fund obligation here!) And you’re seated in only a six-row deep section, so no long treks up and down the Matterhorn of the upper decks like we face in other parts of Tiger Stadium and in most other stadia around the SEC. Yes, you must be able to accept the heights but the view is fantastic and unlike the Upper West, where hearing the band was, and sometimes continues to be, problematic, the band is right across from you. Even better, this section has its own separate bathrooms, two elevators that whisk you to the section, a wide outdoor concourse, eating stations where you can stand and watch the action and a separate menu of paid items including a series of Staks (stacks) which I guess are like shish kabobs but more South Louisiana oriented with a Crawfish Stak and a Gumbo Pouline Stak as well as a Creole Gumbo Nacho. Oh - and you can buy alcohol here, in the forms of domestic, premium and craft beers and an assortment of wine. The paid menu items I mentioned won’t be available Your family, other to the huddled masses in the lower bowl or in the nosebleed sections but a cursory look at the newly refurbished concession stands in those areas showed at least one or two new items. drivers, & your school If a totally new experience is on your 2017 Tiger to-do list, then get with the ticket office now and try this new venue. Just go to www.LSUtix.net and follow the banner prompts on the top of the page to order your tickets. Downstairs, the removal of all of the South end zone dorm rooms has created an additional 50,000 square feet of promenading and refuge space in case the unthinkable happens and lightning threatens Tiger Stadium (what ARE the odds!) Now you can stroll from the west side’s north end zone area to the south end zone area without obstruction. And new gate entry will be simpler, with fans having their choice of virtually any west side gate to enter. It’s almost like heaven finally made a pass over the old gal. There’s even nine restrooms that are brand new and expanded after those sites were demolished and completely rebuilt and the refurbishing of 34 others. Of course, those are not all the facilities in the stadium but Jeansonne said the others should be upgraded within a year or two. And he also promised that custodial services will be much improved. He stopped short of saying there would be soap and towels in the restrooms for the second half, but one can dream, can’t one? I asked about repurposing any of the old dorm rooms (East, North and West are still in place) for an inside restaurant or lounge venue, an amenity I have been advocating for years. They said that was not under consideration at this time. Hey, thanks to the Tiger brain trust and to vendor and TAF funding for the most part, we got this done and it really looks good! In another development, there have been three customer service kiosks installed in parts of the stadium manned by LSU personnel before and after each game and a fourth location on the south pad by the Maravich Center, that will be manned before each game and whose hours and possible post-game activities will be monitored by LSU staffers. These kiosks will keep fans apprised of traffic and weather situations, among other issues. There will also be baby changing stations installed in all the restrooms. I missed most of the bathroom talk, but the new facilities sound very cutting edge with more privacy. The layout, in a way, is similar to the facilities at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara. There, the facilities have been vastly improved over Candlestick Park but the football team and its ownership/management team have gone the other way. That’s a big difference for the Bayou Bengal Nation. Dinner and a real football game, both live at Death Valley. Who’da thunk it?

SCHOOL IS BACK IN PLS DNT TXT & DRV will thank you.

Soon the weather will cool off and the days will get shorter as we approach the latter half of the year. It is about this same time of year where you start to notice plant nurseries and garden centers bringing in new varieties of plants and flowers. The fall season is most famous for the planting and cultivation of cool season flowers and you will start seeing them now if you haven’t already.

Chrysanthemums are some of the most popular flowers for this time of year. Soon there will be row after row of many different varieties of “mums”. Sometimes the vast collection of different mum varieties can be overwhelming. Popularity is the main reason you see so many different varieties of mums. Plant breeders are always on the lookout for new variations of popular flowers. Chrysanthemums can be dated back to 15th century BC in China. In the late 18th century AD they were introduced to the United States and have been a favorite ever since. Mums are relatively easy to grow and have minimal pest issues. There are several leaf spots that are known to occur on chrysanthemums including Septoria, Altenaria, and Cercospora. These can be easily controlled by hand removing infected foliage and treated with a labeled fungicide. Aphids and spider mites are two of the more important insect pest of chrysanthemums. Both can be easily controlled using horticultural oil sprays when detected early. Make sure to always inspect plants from time to time. Insect outbreaks are much easier to handle if detected early in the process. Also, fertilization and supplemental irrigation will produce healthy plants. That, coupled with giving plants the proper amount of space to grow is the best way to prevent most insect and disease problems. One series of chrysanthemum to check out this season is the Belgium Mum® group. These selections are bred for their growth habit, flower count and branch flexibility. Belgium Mums display a very nice mounding growth habit, numerous flowers and strong branching to help protect the plant’s shape. Some of the stand outs from this series include Cesaro (a gorgeous golden yellow), Viviana Yellow (a very bright yellow), Conaco Orange (a large flowered, orange color), Pobo Lavender (a dark lavender color) and Amiko Bronze (a reddish colored bronze). Check to see what new varieties and cultivars your local garden center will carry this season. Also remember when picking out mum plants look for ones that are starting to show a little color so that you can verify the plant tag but not too much. By choosing plants that have not opened most of their blooms, you are increasing the amount of time they are in bloom in your garden. Also, be sure to be careful when handling your mum plants as you get them home. The stems and branches of chrysanthemums are known to be very brittle. Most wholesale growers use plastic cages to help protect the plants during shipment. Keep this in mind as you load up on chrysanthemums this fall season.

Regulation Governing Importation of Cervid Carcasses Now in Effect in Louisiana Sept. 6, 2017 - A new regulation governing importation of cervid carcasses into Louisiana is in effect, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced. The regulation was passed by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) in the fall of 2016 and aims to prevent the introduction of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Louisiana’s white-tailed deer population. The regulation reads in part: No person shall import, transport or possess any cervid carcass or part of a cervid carcass originating outside of Louisiana, except: for meat that is cut and wrapped; meat that has been boned out; quarters or other portions of meat with no part of the spinal column or head attached, antlers, clean skull plates with antlers, cleaned skulls without tissue attached, capes, tanned hides, finished taxidermy mounts and cleaned cervid teeth. … Any and all bones shall be disposed of in a manner where its final destination is at an approved landfill. For more information on CWD and a video on proper deer caping, go to http://www.wlf. louisiana.gov/hunting/CWD. The ban defines a cervid as animals of the family Cervidae, including but not limited to whitetailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose, caribou, fallow deer, axis deer, sika deer, red deer and reindeer. This ban is strictly for the purpose of reducing the likelihood that CWD will enter Louisiana through carcass importation. Approved parts and meat from other states must contain a possession tag with the hunter’s name, out-of-state license number (if required), address, species, date and location (county and state) of harvest. Each state has different possession requirements for game once processed. A total of 41 states have regulations on cervid carcass importation. Click here to see an interactive map with specific state regulations or go to http://www.ncwildlife.org/Hunting/Cervid-Carcass-Regulations. CWD is a neurodegenerative disease found in most deer species, including moose, elk and mule deer as well as white-tailed deer. It is infectious and always fatal. It’s part of a group of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) and is similar to BSE (mad cow disease) of cattle and scrapie in sheep. These diseases cause irreversible damage to brain tissue which leads to death of the animal.

September 14, 2017, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Terrebonne Parish Library (upstairs room), 151 Library Dr., Houma

CWD is caused by prions, which are proteins normally found in the body that have mutated. These prions replicate, leading to holes in the brain tissue. They are spread through direct deer-to-deer contact or through contact with urine, feces, saliva and exposure to infectious materials in the soil. Infected soils are caused by prions binding to soil particles after the animal has decomposed. This creates a route for disease transmission through environmental contamination.

September 18, 2017, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. LSU AgCenter Calcasieu Office, 7101 Gulf Hwy., Lake Charles

It is different from hemorrhagic disease (epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus and/ or bluetongue virus), which is a virus spread by bites from infected insects.

Interested inshore charter captains should contact Thomas Hymel, Louisiana Sea Grant, at (337) 296-6133 or thymel@agcenter.lsu.edu, for more information.

Deer infected with CWD can spread the disease even before symptoms develop. It can take one to two years for infected animals to become symptomatic. When symptoms appear they can include emaciation, lethargy, abnormal behavior and loss of bodily functions. Other signs include excessive salivation, loss of appetite, progressive weight loss, excessive thirst and urination, teeth grinding and drooping ears.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) there is no evidence that CWD can infect humans. However, the CDCP recommends caution in handling venison in the infected region and that deer be tested for CWD before consuming.

Operation Game Thief Complaint Yields Polluted Oyster Violations Case Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents cited four subjects for alleged oyster violations on Sept. 4 in Lafourche Parish. Agents cited Micky J. Picou, 35, Rusty J. Authement, 29, both from Montegut; and Steve Leboeuf, 57, and Wiley J. Lebouef, 66, both from Chauvin; for taking oysters from a polluted area. Agents were responding to an Operation Game Thief complaint of illegal oyster harvesters in polluted waters east of Tidewater Canal. Agents located the subjects in the morning harvesting oysters from a polluted area. Agents seized 13 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water. Agents also seized the vessel and dredges on a department seizure order. Taking oysters from a polluted area brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. The men could also have their oyster harvester licenses revoked by the department for up to one year. The violators could also be sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service and only be allowed to harvest oysters from a vessel with a vessel monitoring device for up to one year. Agents participating in the case are Lt. Joseph Arnaud and Senior Agent Richard Bean.

Hi, my name is Heaven! I was abandoned at PAWS with my two puppies. The puppies found a home months ago and now it’s my turn to find a home. When I first came to PAWS I was scared of everyone. I didn’t understand what was going on or why I was here. I’ve come a long way since I first arrived. I get to play outside with staff members. We play ‘Catch me if you can’. When I’m finished playing I love to sit in your lap to take a nap. I know some basic commands and have the best eyebrows at the shelter. I would love to have a home with a backyard to play my favorite game and a warm bed to sleep in. Come adopt me today!

LDWF Bird Radio Tracking Project To More Than Double in Capacity Thanks to Grant From ConocoPhillips Sept. 6, 2017 – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Coastal Louisiana Array Project, used to track radio-tagged birds, will more than double in capacity by July 2018 thanks to a generous grant from ConocoPhillips. This project started as a joint effort among LDWF, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) and the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation (LWFF) in the spring of 2016. Louisiana’s network, based on Bird Studies Canada’s successful Motus Wildlife Tracking System, consists of multiple very high frequency (VHF) receiver stations constructed along the coast. The ConocoPhillips’ grant will allow construction of an almost seamless digital network, consisting of 32 VHF receiver stations stretching from the Texas border to the Mississippi border. To support the donation, ConocoPhillips, through its subsidiary, The Louisiana Land Exploration Company LLC which owns approximately 636,000 acres, will provide free access to its property along the Southeast Louisiana coast. “BTNEP is pleased to partner with the many organizations and funding partners who understand the value of tracking migratory birds,’’ said BTNEP Director Susan TestroetBergeron. “The key benefit of this technology is that it allows biologists to conduct research on target individuals without the requirement of recurring and often random visual observation. This low impact form of monitoring has led to tremendous advances in our knowledge of bird habitat use, breeding success and mortality.” Although radio-tracking of animals has occurred since the 1960s, the miniaturization of electronics and the collaborative nature of the Motus project have revolutionized animal tracking. Biologists across North America have been attaching miniature radio tags, called nanotags, to birds and other animals for several years. Nanotags emit radio signals that are detected by the receiver stations, allowing scientists to study animal behaviors like migration and allowing identification of sites for conservation. To date, LDWF and BTNEP have constructed 13 receiver stations across coastal Louisiana. Several dozen birds, from songbirds to shorebirds, including federally threatened species like the red knot, have already been detected in just the first year of the project.

LDWF, Partners Ask Public to Limit Transport of Roseau Cane, Report Die Off Sept. 7, 2017 - Due to an expansive Roseau cane die off in some of Louisiana’s coastal parishes, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), along with several of its partners, are asking for the public’s assistance to limit transport of Roseau cane and report suspected die offs. In addition to LDWF, the LSU AgCenter, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF), Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) are requesting aid from the public. The Roseau cane scale, a non-native tiny insect that consumes the plant, may be contributing to the die off that has been found in 11 Louisiana coastal parishes, including Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Jefferson, Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. Mary, St. Charles, Orleans, St. John the Baptist, Tangipahoa and in southern Mississippi. Waterfowl hunters and fishermen are encouraged to do the following: · · · ·

Do not transport Roseau cane. Do not tie boats up to Roseau cane. Remove all Roseau cane debris from boats prior to leaving local marinas. Wash and drain boats at or near marinas with soapy water.

These measures will limit the spread of the scale or other vectors that could be the source of the die off. The public is also encouraged to report areas of stressed cane and the presence of the Roseau cane scale. A short web based survey is the best way to report those observations. To participate in the survey, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PhragmitesSurvey . The survey is short and asks for the location of the Roseau cane as well as a picture of the infected Roseau cane and scale (if present). Roseau cane is a tall wetland grass that helps protect the Mississippi River’s bird foot delta and Louisiana’s coastal region. Unlike some marsh vegetation, Roseau cane stands up well to tropical storm events. It is one of the most erosion-resistant marsh plants along the Louisiana coast. The spread of the scale could have severe impacts on the health of our coastal marshes as well as valuable agricultural crops throughout the state. For more information on Roseau cane, go to http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/fishing/roseau-cane-scale-delta . For more information, contact LDWF biologist director Todd Baker at tbaker@wlf.la.gov or 225765-2814.

Because of the Motus program and Louisiana’s new coastal network, Louisiana scientists and colleagues across the globe are able to more efficiently study animal movements and implement conservation. Generous funding from ConocoPhillips, BTNEP, LWFF and LDWF ensures Louisiana’s continued contribution to this novel, international scientific network. For more information, contact LDWF ornithologist Michael Seymour at mseymour@wlf. la.gov or 225-763-3554.
