In the gardening and culinary enrichment classes taught by Ms. Corinne and Chef Galle, students learned all about radishes; from seed to soil, harvest, and consumption. The students learned how to use radishes as a substitute for potatoes in certain recipes. Chef G prepared Garlic and Herb Radishes for the students to try. This particular lesson demonstrates all four pillars of the Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen program: appreciation for the source of food, understanding nutrition and healthy eating, developing of life skills through food and development of culinary skills.

LDWF

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Enforcement Division agents cited two men for alleged charter guide fishing violations in Plaquemines Parish on Oct. 24. Agents cited Jeremy D. Roussel, 39, of Metairie, and Ryan Arceneaux, 37, of Buras, for not possessing a charter guide license and failing to provide proof of liability insurance. Agents were on patrol in Port Sulphur working bow fishing charters when Roussel and Arceneaux were stopped separately working for separate companies with paying customers. This is Roussel’s fourth offense for not having the required charter guide licenses required by the state of Louisiana.

BREAKING UP THE MEDIA MONOLITH Of all the dangers presented in 2020, none have presented a more clear and present threat to American sovereignty than the monolithic, lockstep journalistic sellout in favor of one party, one philosophy and the near-total absentia of the other major political party’s positive accomplishments. How this has come to occur is a study of creeping socialistic philosophies on one hand and a free pass from unrealistic, bombastic college professors on the other hand to ease and grease the way for their “cooperative” so-called journalistic students towards a path of high income, higher recognition and little ability or desire to perform as journalists.

Today, those journalists who practice the venerable art of patience, diligence, curiousity and a sense of justice and fair play are sequestered in journalistic backwaters, whether the instrument of journalism or the subject matter. Any subject with the ability to receive the revealing light dealing LDWF requires all charter fishermen to have a U.S. Coast Guard Captains License, a charter boat with politics, policy, crime, corruption or worse gets shunted to the pretty talking heads whose fishing guide license issued by LDWF and proof of at least $300,000 liability insurance all in their abilities to foment true discussion has atrophied under the withering fire of leftist pressures and threats of penury. possession while on the water and fishing. First offense of not possessing a charter guide license and the required insurance carries up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail for each offense. For the third offense and all subsequent offenses of not possessing a charter guide license brings a $1,000 to $5,000 fine and 180 days to two years in jail. Agents participating in the case are Lt. Adam Young and Senior Agent Kyle Haydel.

LDWF Agents Locate Body of Missing Boater in St. Bernard Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents recovered the body of a missing boater in St. Bernard Parish today, Oct. 27.

Today, competitive deadlines are virtually a quaint notion in journalism. A source parses out appropriate adjectives, adverbs, descriptive nouns and allows the ersatz journalists to formulate verbs and other verbiage incorporating these approved words into a robotic mantra. As their fellow zombies look on, the semi-serious, sarcastic or emotional mouthpiece completes the latest attack or praise, depending on the subject. Groupthink, group love and group hate are the results and it takes a well-rounded individual to suppress and more than neutralize these vocal or visual campaigns of misinformation, hyperbole or downright baldface lies. All these things have a way of coming back ‘round and the next series of exploitative campaigning probably will come from the perceived victims over the past months and years. Meanwhile, 98% of the country is battered with b.s. on a 24-hour basis, this while trying to combat Covid, crushing economic restrictions and an inability for our citizens to speak their mind without threats of various retribution. Enough!

Agents recovered the body of Rickey Dean, 32, of Chalmette in the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. Agents responded to the incident on Oct. 25 about 1 p.m. Agents learned that Dean was a passenger in his uncle’s vessel when they were both ejected from the vessel into the water. A nearby boater was able to rescue the operator, but was unable to rescue Dean. LDWF agents along with the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Coast Guard began immediate search and rescue operations, but were unable to locate him. LDWF continued recovery operations through Monday into Tuesday until they were able to recover Dean’s body. LDWF will be the lead agency investigating for this fatal boating incident. Dean’s body was found without wearing a personal flotation device and was turned over to the St. Bernard Parish Coroner’s Office to determine an official cause of death.

Public Reminded to be Mindful of Displaced Wildlife After Hurricane Zeta Passes, LDWF Says In the aftermath of Hurricane Zeta, wildlife species will seek higher ground and be displaced into habitat with which they may not be familiar. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) urges the public to be especially cognizant of wildlife forced into populated areas by flood water from the storm. Rising waters force wildlife from flooded habitat into adjacent residential and commercial areas where they may come into contact with residents. LDWF urges citizens to minimize contact with animals while they seek temporary refuge from their flooded home range.

We may not know who will serve in the White House on January 21st, 2021 until Thanksgiving or later, thanks to a massive early voting turnout and the threat of tainted vote-counting. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast residents are revisiting the aftermath of an all-too-familiar visit from Mother Nature. We’ve had enough Mothers this year to fill a lifetime and if Eta becomes a hurricane and Theta follows, no one will give one Iota about anything the rest of 2020. We’ve included some photos from Zeta’s visit last week, primarily in the Long Beach area, where beach boardwalk 4x4’s were snapped like pencils, boats visited dry land up to two blocks from the beach and McDonald’s apparently has a new look to the lower portion of their Golden Arches signs as nearly every Mickey D sign was damaged similarly to this one on Hwy 49 in Gulfport. Speaking of McDonalds, the picture of the sailboat in the drive-thru lane was one that will stay with me for awhile (“you want a safe mooring with that Big Mac?”) Ten feet of water over Hwy 90 with winds well in excess of 100 miles per hour. Zeta’s tail left a sad tale in Hancock and Harrison Counties. Things seemed to be a little less disruptive headed towards D’Iberville and Ocean Springs but we’re all ready to throw in the towel on trauma. Street signals were littered on corners throughout the area as they were snapped off their overhead cables. Many business storefront facades were stripped and many others had big window damage, including a couple of our advertisers. Lots of trees on the ground, several “blue roofs” were seen and cleanup was beginning in earnest. We may never need a Thanksgiving more than this year’s. Let’s pray that it won’t get any worse in 2021 and that Christ and karma bring about a desperately needed respite.

Wild animals not posing a threat to humans should be left alone and should not be fed. Feeding wild animals will encourage those animals to remain in the vicinity of a new food source when they should be allowed to find natural habitat and food sources on their own.

PANSIES: THE MOST POPULAR COOL SEASON FLOWER

Will Afton

In some circles, pansy might not be an admirable descriptor, but in the garden, pansies stand out amongst all other flowers in the winter garden. The pansy we know today, Viola tricolor var. hortensis, got its start back in England during the early 19th century. The daughter of the Earl of Tankerville, Lady Mary Elizabeth Bennet, collected wild specimens of V. tricolor and started a plant breeding project. The resulting crosses were eventually presented to the Royal Horticultural Society and received great praise.

Currently, pansies claim the title of most popular cool-season bedding plant and because of this they come in a variety of different colors including several bi-color combinations. You can find colors that match with almost any design scheme. Pansies are relatively easy to grow and don’t require an excessive amount of care. They prefer areas that receive full to part sun. This equates to at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight. Anything less will produce weak plants and few flowers. Pansies prefer an acidic soil condition with a range of 5.5 to 6 on the pH scale. Have your soil tested prior to planting to determine your current pH status. Lime can be added to raise soil pH or elemental sulfur can be added to lower soil pH. The soil test also tells you what nutrients are deficient in the soil. This is beneficial because pansies are considered heavy feeders and should be fertilized properly. For any bedding plant to be successful, a proper amount of organic matter should be incorporated into the soil. Homemade compost is excellent but there are commercial options available at most garden centers. Work into the soil down to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Even with all the different varieties, all pansies will eventually grow 10 to 12 inches wide and tall. Place plants every 6 to 8 inches for maximum effect and remember to plant at the same depth as they were in their original containers. Finish them off will a layer of mulch like the fine textured pine needle mulch to really add icing to the cake. All plants have specific pests and pansies are no exception. Several leaf spots including anthracnose, alternaria, and cercospora are common fungal pests. In most cases, they will cause unsightly spots on the foliage. The spots can be brown, tan, or transparent. Anthracnose in particular can produce spots with a concentric ring pattern. These pathogens obviously cause a decrease in aesthetics and should be treated upon confirmation. If anthracnose is determined, then it is advised to remove infected plants and replace. Using mulch to prevent plant-soil contact and reducing overhead irrigation can help protect plants from the other fungal diseases. Fungicide sprays can also add another layer of protection. As far as insect pests go, aphids are the most important pest. They can become problematic during periods of vegetative growth because they prefer to feed on young developing leaves and stems. Small infestations can be controlled by natural ladybeetle populations, but larger infestations may require the use of an insecticide. Neem and oil and insecticidal soap are effective as long as labeled instructions are followed properly. Snails and slugs can also be problematic on pansies. Look to use a snail and slug bait to control these elusive nighttime feeders. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when trying to decipher amongst all the different pansy varieties offered at the garden center. Upwards of more than 250 different varieties of pansies are available on the market. Most of these varieties are grouped into series where each series contains plants that very in color but share similarities in flower size, form, hardiness, heat tolerance, and so forth. Heat tolerance can be a beneficial trait for gardeners in Southeast Louisiana because of the frequent warm periods received during winter months. The ‘Majestic Giant’ series is one of the more popular available. They display good heat/cold tolerance and produce large 3 to 4-inch flowers in various colors. The ‘Crystal Bowl’ series boasts clear faced flowers that are smaller in size. For an interesting twist try the ‘Cool Wave’ pansies. They have a spreading growth habit. Use them in a winter inspired combination planter or hanging basket. The spreading growth habit provides a nice spillover effect.

Alligators, Snakes: Flood waters will carry reptiles into populated areas where they may not normally be noted in significant numbers. Following the impact of flood waters, exercise extreme caution when salvaging possessions from flooded areas. Wildlife, especially reptiles, may remain in flooded areas and pose a safety threat. Venomous snake species in Louisiana include the canebrake rattlesnake, the copperhead, the cottonmouth, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the harlequin coral snake, the pygmy rattlesnake and the Texas coral snake. Deer, Feral Hogs: Deer and feral hog populations represent the two large quadruped species that may appear in populated areas in significant numbers as flood waters move wild animals out of natural habitat. As is the case with all wild animals, how these species will react to humans in close contact situations is unpredictable. LDWF recommends allowing these species, when sighted individually or in groups, to move unimpeded through flooded areas as they seek higher ground. Marine Mammals: To report marine mammal strandings, contact Audubon Nature Institute’s Coastal Wildlife Network at 504-235-3005. Sea Turtles: To report sea turtle strandings, call 1-844-SEA-TRTL (1-844-732-8785). Select option 4 to report a stranded sea turtle and then option 4 for Louisiana.

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Don’t you just love the cooler temperatures. It is so refreshing not to feel the sweltering humidity slab you in the face when you walk out the front door. I love October for many reasons. Not only is it the month of Halloween and the beginning of the holiday season but, it is also the birthday of my Dad, Sister, and one of my nephews. So with that being said, I made a bouquet of flowers to bring to the cemetery for them. I just love the colors of fall flowers. All those beautiful oranges, browns, reds, and greens. I actually got 2 flower bunches from Rouses. The flowers had just come in so I knew they were super fresh. I had everything else at the house. The floral foam, container and floral tape. A throwback from the days when I had my flower shop. The bunches of flowers I purchased had a relatively nice selection of flowers. I was pleased with the flowers. I even had a few left that I was able to make a small table arrangement. I did order flowers from the supplier though for All Saints Day. Tradition calls for Football Mums on that special day.

CRAFTS PAULA JOHNSON

Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun. Oh by the way, I will be at St. Mark’s Fall Fest on Sat. 24 Oct. Come by and say hi. It would be nice to see you. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

After a well deserved rest of about 20 minutes or more he decided to get back in the program. It was not long before he was back fighting with another monster. This time I did not have to chase this stud. Mitch got some more vidio of his dad making lasting memories.

The fall fishing is starting to come into place. We have not had a “green river” in 3 years. The fish and the fishermen are running in circles with one storm after another disturbing the waters. Now all we have to do is have the fronts calm down a bit more and we can have a great fall fishing 2020. Imagine that something going right in 2020.

The next day was more of the same. Although not a bunch of bulls there was enough action to keep us out there looking for a trophy. Life is Good!

I had Mitch and his 70ish year old father Buddy looking for bulls for 3 days. This trip was about showing Buddy a great time fishing. Even with the strong 2 foot plus tides and high winds the fish did not disappoint us. Mitch impressed me with all the attention and care he had for his father. I soon realised this family is exceptional. The care and attention Mitch gave Buddy was exceptional.

It was a good 3 days and just enough action so as not to over work his father he had 3 good memorable days here in Venice La. Kife is Good!

November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month November is National Adopt a Senior Pet month, and the Louisiana SPCA is sharing a variety of reasons to adopt a senior pet. Many adopters look for puppies or kittens when looking for a new pet, but senior animals can be the perfect companion! Often, senior pets spend the longest amount of time in shelters since many people overlook them. On average, senior pets spend significantly more time in shelters compared to young and adolescent animals, and that may be because many potential adopters simply do not know how beneficial adopting a senior pet can be.

Our Plaquemines Parish Campus is open for adoptions again but our adoptions are being done by appointment only. This will ensure a limited number of people in the building at one time to help keep our adopters and team safe. To view the animals currently available for adoption visit www.la-spca.org/adoptables. To make an appointment, potential adopters must complete our online application Once submitted, our team will contact the adopter to schedule their appointment. On a side note, I’ve seen some online chatter about residents being frustrated about animals not being picked up by animal control. We do not provide animal controls services for the parish, only sheltering. Animal control issues should be directed to the Plaquemines Parish Animal Control at 504-934-6690.

Older animals can be the perfect companion for calmer or older families because of their generally calm lifestyle. Senior animals are usually not as active as their younger counterparts, and they much prefer snuggling to playing. Senior pets are also usually potty trained and laid-back, which makes it much easier to leave them at home alone for a little while without having to worry about them having an accident or destroying anything. Older dogs also offer training advantages because of their calmer demeanor. It is easier for older dogs to focus on training without getting bored or distracted, so it actually is easy to teach an old dog new tricks! Another advantage of adopting older animals is that you will be a hero in their eyes, and they will be forever grateful for you giving them a loving home. Senior animals somehow have a way of knowing that you gave them a home when nobody else would, and they are prepared to love you for the rest of their lives with everything in their heart. In celebration of National Adopt a Senior Pet Month, consider adding a senior pet to your family! To view the animals currently available for adoption visit www.louisianaspca.org.
