Belle Chasse Academy is a proud school partner in the Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen. Together we work to enrich the lives of children through a fun, fresh perspective on food. In this virtual demonstration, Chef Ryan Galle, along with Garden Coordinator Corinne Akins, prepare Pasta Primavera using vegetables and herbs taken right from the school’s garden. Chef prepared the dish and then students were able to sample it. During the presentation, Chef and Ms. Akins discussed with the students the nutritional value of the vegetables and herbs along with other ways they could be used.

Gov. John Bel Edwards announced today a $250,000 program that will pay part of the cost shrimp fishermen will have to pay for mandated devices to protect sea turtles and other animals from getting trapped in their nets. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will operate the Skimmer Turtle Excluder Device Reimbursement Program (STEDRP), which will reimburse up to 60 percent of the cost for two skimmer Turtle Excluder Devices, commonly called TEDs. A turtle excluder device is a metal grid installed inside of a shrimp net. Shrimp are captured as they pass through the grid. TEDs prevent the capture and subsequent drowning of sea turtles listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The cost of the devices vary from $150 to $350. “I commend the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and their funding partners for putting this program together,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said. “My administration is committed to getting as much funding as possible to assist our fishing community.” On April 1, 2021, federal law will require that TEDs must be installed in skimmer vessels 40 feet long and longer. Louisiana fishermen could need from 1,200 to 1,500 TEDs manufactured by the mandated date. The goal of STEDRP is to provide some financial relief to fishermen who have to purchase the devices prior to the effective date. Eligible participants include fishermen who have current residential skimmer gear licenses, vessels that are 40 feet in length or longer, and have reported landings from 2018 to 2020. Program participants will be required to attend an informational meeting, facilitated by LDWF and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Gear Monitoring Team. Meeting topics will include specifications for the skimmer TEDs, a review of the sea turtle regulations, where to purchase TEDs that meet specifications and details on the STEDRP. Fishermen will be registered and tracked for reimbursements through an online system used by LDWF in administering similar programs. LDWF will provide more information on applying for the program and registering for a meeting in the upcoming weeks. Funding sources for this project include the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Deepwater Horizon Sea Turtle Early Restoration Project.

Mississippi Resident Cited for Fishing Guide Violations in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Mississippi man for alleged commercial guide and recreational fishing violations in Plaquemines Parish on Oct. 3. Agents cited Robert C. Bennett, 36, of Purvis, Miss., for violating charter boat regulations and obtaining a license by fraud. Agents were on patrol in the Venice area when they encountered Bennett and three occupants on his vessel possessing saltwater finfish. During the license inspection, agents noticed the three occupants possessed non-resident three-day guide passenger licenses. The three occupants informed agents they paid Bennett for a guided fishing trip. Bennett was unable to produce a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. Agents also found Bennett in possession of a Louisiana ID with a Monroe address and a Mississippi driver’s license with Louisiana resident recreational hunting and fishing licenses. Bennett also admitted he was guiding without the required guide licenses. Agents informed him that he obtained his resident recreational hunting and fishing privileges fraudulently because he does not meet the qualifications of a bona fide Louisiana resident. Failing to comply with charter boat guide regulations carries up to a $950 fine 120 days in jail. Obtaining licenses by fraud carries a up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail. Agents participating in the case are Sgt. Edward Ridgel and Sgt. Villere Reggio.

IS THIS THE LAST HURRAH FOR THE U.S.? In less than two weeks, the United States will decide whether the voters want to continue with Donald Trump as President or go with Joe Biden. Just about everything there is to say about this matchup has been said and virtually everyone in the country has had just about enough of what passes for adult discourse among what is supposed to be our leadership. Instead, we are looking at a brawl between those who want power to stem the rising tide of radical liberalism and maintain another four years of an imperfect presidency with a continuous, contentious short term future or those who want to throw out much of the bathwater and damn the baby inside. Why there is so much pure hatred in this country over the policies and procedures that have brought us so much positive over the years as a country is beyond me. There have been sea changes in people’s minds since the civil rights days of the ’60’s and most Americans are on board with understanding and reshaping their thoughts over what our forefathers did not recognize as injustice and inequality and are willing and able to make those changes necessary. This democracy has not survived for more than a quarter millennium by luck, strongmen or a geographical oddity. This country has survived and thrived because it has given the world more opportunity and less roadblocks to that opportunity than any nation that ever or even today exists. Anyone who has traveled sees the differences between societies around the world and although no society is perfect, ours comes the closest. It used to be “America - love it or leave it!” Then it was “America - love it and institute change to equalize the playing field so you can continue to love it and stay.” Now it seems to be “America - think the way we say to think or live greatly diminished and controlled lives!” Our Founders put in place a very sophisticated and generally balanced way of governing so the underdog has a forum and runaway power can be reined in. Lose that balance and those in the oligarchy will realize sooner than later that the attractiveness of the American dream and scheme depends on the ability to move within the structure of the system with a healthy right to dissent and disagree. Kill that off and progress dies or languishes under the yoke of groupthink, which has never proven to advance a society. And with a stagnant society comes the vultures of totalitarianism who would destroy any society that showed the advances that the United States created over the past two and one half centuries. There are bigger and less humane villains out there than our political opposites in Congress and elsewhere and if they see a rend in the fabric of America, their actions will make the discourse of this year’s narrative seem like child’s play. No truly democratic society has been replaced with less than what the United States created in the late 1700’s and all the vitriol and name calling will not make it any different. It’s clothespin time for voters who have not cast their ballots before November 3rd. Anyone alive today will have to place 2020 among those years where events were so odious that no one would want to live its 365 days again. That includes those who can’t see any positives in the way we’ve conducted our affairs since the colonial days. I’m praying that those who want the ever-evolving American saga to continue on a positive and inclusive, independent path will have their wish granted when we enter 2021. We’re not living for our government; it exists for our benefit and the common good. We won’t know the election results until after our next publication date as we go to press the Monday before Election Tuesday. We might not know the results for days, weeks or even longer after November 3rd. We can only remain united as a people and continue to fight not only the Covid-19 Pandemic but the Hate-2020 Pandemic. The former needs a vaccine; the latter needs cooler, responsible and empathetic heads to bring it under control. Here’s to the unfettered future of the United States, where renewed consideration and awareness shown by those with a leg up the ways and means to help those without some of the benefits with which they have been bestowed. And those ways and means include fairness, temperance and understanding. Don’t forget to vote! -0THREE 32” Pre-hung steel doors, $150. 6’ upper and lower cabinets $200. Call 504-884-7402.

LAWN FUNGUS Fall is a beautiful time of year in Louisiana. The daytime temperatures are cooler and the colors in the landscape are gorgeous. Everything seems to slow down as we approach the end of the year, even the lawn grass. All of this sounds wonderful, but it is a perfect combination of environmental factors that favor the development of large patch disease in warm season turfgrasses like centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass. Lawns that have a history of large patch disease will soon start showing symptoms again, if not already, as rains start to become more frequent. Will Afton Look to apply a fungicide to help prevent the progression of large patch disease and to provide your lawn with much needed protection. Large patch disease (also known as brown patch disease) is caused by the fungal organism, Rhizoctonia solani. This fungus is very abundant in South Louisiana. It waits for the perfect environmental conditions, a susceptible host, and the right time before causing disease. St Augustinegrass is the most susceptible turfgrass to large patch disease but all warm-season turfgrasses (centipedegrass, bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass) can be affected. The disease is first observed as small irregular shaped patches of dead grass. When conditions are favorable, the patches can become quite large, especially if left untreated. The organism attacks the base of the leaf sheath, causing it to rot. It doesn’t necessarily kill the turfgrass. It results in thinned out areas of lawn that favor the growth of weedy, more tolerant species. The disease typically starts in areas with poor drainage where water can accumulate. Areas nears trees, shrubs, and fences are problematic due to reduced air movement that prevents the turf from drying out after irrigation or rainfall. The disease develops most rapidly when nighttime temperatures average between 60 and 75°F and daytime temperatures do not exceed 85 to 90°F. Once large patch disease begins in the lawn, manage it with a fungicide. Fall applications can help protect lawns, limit damage before the turfgrass goes dormant, and disease conditions become unfavorable. Environmental conditions will dictate the number of applications needed. In most cases, I recommend two applications to provide the best control. Fungicides can come in dry or liquid forms. For active large patch infestations, use a liquid version if possible. Dry granular fungicides are still effective but remember that they must be watered in it order to be activated. Most of the fungicides available to homeowners are systemic fungicides, meaning that they are taken up by the plant and work from the inside out. Look for products with the active ingredients such as azoxystrobin (Scott’s DiseaseEx), myclobutanil (Fertilome F-Stop, Spectracide Immunox Multi-Purpose Fungicide), and propiconazole (BioAdvanced Fungus Control for Lawns, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II). Take note of what product is applied on the first application. It is important to rotate active ingredients when treating for large patch disease because of resistance issues. If propiconazole was used in the first application then look to find a product with myclobutanil or azoxystrobin to use in a second application. Always remember to read and follow all label instructions when applying any pesticides. When used in accordance with the label, these fungicides are safe to use on all home lawns. -0-

DNT TXT&DRV ... W82TXT By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

I think Fall is finally arriving. Here it is, 5 a.m. and my phone is telling me it’s 76 degrees. October is almost over. Where are the 60 degree temperatures? I am so ready to wear a sweater and feel the cooler temperatures. The stores have all 3 holidays displayed together. I just want to get through Halloween before I start thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas. I decided this time to make a completely neutral project I had been wanting to do some stenciling so I decided this was the time. Hobby Lobby had these cute signs on sale and I decided to get one, along with a stencil and a couple bottles of paint. I am not completely finished with this yet (had to watch the Saints game). But, decided to show you what I have.

Follow me on Instagram @wafton William Afton | County Agent LSU AgCenter • St. Tammany Parish 1301 N. Florida St. • Covington, LA 70433 Office: (985) 875-2635 • Fax: (985) 875-2639

I prepped the wood like I normally do and painted the darker area with Cranberry Wine and the lighter area with Light Buttermilk. After it dried I placed my stencil where I wanted it and used Oyster Beige to the paint the lettering. I than speckled the piece with Light Buttermilk. And you know how impatient I am., I used the blow dryer between each coat. I think it looks okay, so far. Can’t wait to get it finished. Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next craft project be? Mine......I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 12.2.19

Every now and then i take Leam out fishing. He is getting quite good at casting. With this particular fish he casted about a foot from the canes. The cork went down instantly and the fight was on. It even went back into the canes and started to wrap them. Leam listened to me and by using constant pressure instead of trying to horse it out he was able to guide the fish to the point of least resistance and guided it out of the canes. Once in the open it was a matter of fighting it to the net. This all made for a great vidio that his aunt took. My next trip was with some guys that had never caught a redfish before. Actualy one of them had to be shown how to hold the reel and cast. I am used to this so i just help out automatically. This was a great way to breaknthis gentleman in.

The keepers kept coming on a slow pace. This was going to be a day that would be drawn out. This day was a fishing day not a catching day. We were making it work though. As I moved from place to place one would come out for the tasty snack that we were offering. If ther were old enough we would invite them to have dinner with our families at our house. I moved into a canal that usually holds a fish or two and was not disappointed. When the cork went under the drag started singing. There was no doubt as to the size of this beauty. The fish was running at will until it got tired. The water was splashing and the mud was churning up as this beauty fought to get free. This customer is now spoiled!

The variety was also available. I only kept the bigger sheepshead. There were no real big ones on this day. We were only able to keep a couple of these tasty critters. Lou Lowe and 2 of his fellow military officers were with me for a day of fishing. The action was slow w We made a day of it pickin away at them. The trip was about his buddies that he wanted to thank for the friendship they had developed through the military. We let Lou get into the action also. The pickings were not on fire. This was during the transition time when the fish were just moving into our fall and winter pattern. I was forced to go into protected waters due to the winds which also limited our action. This hampered me but did not stop me from putting a few beautiful fish into the box. You can see the canes being blown to the left in this picture.

We ended up with a respectable box for our efforts. The winds could have made our day easier but we had to work with the cards we were dealt. It was another hard but successful adventure. Life is Good! The fish are now into their fall/winter homes. The trout bite is on fire and the rest of the fish are chewing. Go get them!

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month Throughout the month of October, we are celebrating our amazing shelter dogs for National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! There are many benefits to adopting a dog instead of purchasing one from a breeder. Shelter dogs have the capacity to love larger than life! While some of the dogs in our care have never had a home to call their own, many of them have. For a variety of reasons, they were surrendered to our shelter or were separated from their original family and never reunited. These dogs want to be part of a family that will love them unconditionally and in return they will show you the same!

Our Plaquemines Parish Campus is open for adoptions again but our adoptions are being done by appointment only. This will ensure a limited number of people in the building at one time to help keep our adopters and team safe. To view the animals currently available for adoption visit www.la-spca.org/adoptables. To make an appointment, potential adopters must complete our online application Once submitted, our team will contact the adopter to schedule their appointment. On a side note, I’ve seen some online chatter about residents being frustrated about animals not being picked up by animal control. We do not provide animal controls services for the parish, only sheltering. Animal control issues should be directed to the Plaquemines Parish Animal Control at 504-934-6690.

Besides our youngest puppies, most of our shelter dogs have some sort of manners training already under their paw. Whether the dogs learned their manners from a previous family or because of our amazing behavior team working with them, our shelter dogs are well on their way to being well behaved canine citizens. Depending on the age, many of our dogs are already housebroken too. The most heartwarming benefit of adopting a shelter dog is that you are saving a life. Regardless of how these dogs come into our care, they are counting on us to find them an amazing home. If you’re ready to unleash your heart to a shelter dog visit our website, www.louisianaspca.org, to see all of the dogs who have made their adoption debut.
