LDWF Invites You to Its Annual National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebrations

Bottom Row: Michael Cambre, Rosalie Soden, Everett Ducote Middle Row: Lucas Urcia, Lily Roubion, Connor Hoang, Rajveer Singh, Linzey Harris Top Row: Reed Urcia, Edward Holder, Joey Nguyen

Louisiana’s National Hunting and Fishing Day celebration, which is expected to draw several thousand children and adults, is set for Saturday, September 28, in four locations around the state. NHFD has become a tradition since its establishment in the early 1970s. Since then, every fourth Saturday in September is dedicated to Louisiana’s popular outdoor pastimes. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries introduced its first NHFD event in 1982 at the Monroe District Office, and in the following years, additional locations were added to its roster. Today, more than 10,000 people statewide attend the celebrations, establishing the department’s largest, free public event. This year, celebrations will include: Baton Rouge, Haughton, Woodworth and Monroe. All events are free and will feature exhibits from numerous local outdoor clubs, conservation organizations and businesses, including: Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club and CCA Louisiana. Attendees have the chance to try their skills at the shooting ranges, fishing ponds and boating activities, as well as learn about wildlife with live animals. Event details are as follows: United States Fish and Wildlife Service Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge 480 Richmond Place Drive Monroe, LA 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 318-343-4044 Waddill Wildlife Refuge 4142 North Flannery Road Baton Rouge, LA 70814 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 225-765-2927 * This site will be stocked with adult-sized channel catfish. Anglers are urged to bring their own rod, reel and ice chest to keep their catch (limits apply).

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Reminder of the Current Blue Crab Harvest Regulations At its September 6, 2018 meeting, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission adopted a Notice of Intent to change regulations for the recreational and commercial harvest of blue crabs in 2019. The rule prohibits the recreational and commercial take and/or possession of mature female blue crab for a 35-day period beginning September 9, 2019, and ending October 13, 2019. These changes are expected to result in less negative impact on the crab fishery than the 60-day spring full closure of the commercial fishery originally proposed, while maintaining the same level of protection to the blue crab stock. The changes are listed below : The recreational and commercial take of female blue crab from any of the waters of the state or the possession of female blue crabs while on waters of the state is prohibited for a thirty-five day period beginning the second Monday of September in 2019 (September 9 – October 13, 2019). All female blue crab in possession of any persons on the water shall be deemed to have been taken from the waters of the state. These regulations will replace the previous 30-day closure, imposed in 2017, and the 60-day female harvest restriction imposed in the spring of 2018, and the previously proposed restriction in spring of 2019. Removal of the sunset provision on the currently established ban on the commercial harvest of immature female blue crabs, making the ban permanent. Regulations on commercial female blue crab harvest to remain in effect are as follows: Commercial harvest of immature female blue crabs is illegal. A commercial fisherman may possess an incidental take of immature female crabs in an amount not to exceed two percent of the total number of crabs that is possessed. Crabs in a work box, used to sort or cull undersized and/or immature female crabs, are not subject to the restriction while held aboard an active fishing vessel. (An immature female crab, also known as a “maiden” or “V-bottom” crab, can be identified as having a triangular shaped apron on her abdomen. A mature female crab can be identified as having a dome shaped apron on her abdomen.) There is an exception for immature, female blue crabs held for processing as softshell crabs or

Bodcau WMA Shooting Range 168 Ben Durden Road Haugton, LA 71037 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 318-371-3050 “It’s all about the kids,” explained LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet. “Getting the next generation involved with nature and exposing them to a wide variety of options and activities is important. Our events provide a taste of what’s available in our Sportsman’s Paradise.” The department thanks the following sponsors for their generous support of this year’s event: Armstrong Cricket Farm, Associated Food Stores of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Ch-Yo-Ca Hunting Camp, Entergy, GN Gonzales of Baton Rouge, KNOE Channel 8, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation, Louisiana Safari Club International Acadiana Chapter and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Ok, September is here and we are still having 90 plus degree temperatures. Watching football games at the High School stadium just doesn’t feel that great. And by the time 4th quarter rolls around those young men are totally exhausted from the heat. I am ready for cooler temperatures. With that being said, let me tell you about my project. I actually saw this on one of the Blogs I am a member of I think it is really cute and pushed my other project to the side to do this one. I know, I should have completed the other, but I really do have time for that one. I went to WalMart and got the letters I needed, Michael’s for the napkins, Dollar Tree had the ghosts and cats. I had everything else at the house. I painted the edges of the letters, the ghosts, and cat the appropriate colors. While the paint was drying I removed one ply from the back of the napkin (the plain white part I discarded). I than applied an even coat of Modge Podge on the front of letter. I had the napkin, printed side down. I placed the letter down onto the napkin, pressed firmly and than turned the letter over and let dry completely. With an exacto knife I cut the edges and centers of the letters out and hot glued the ghosts and cats to the back of the letters so they would be peeping through. You can add a 1” X 1” wooden block to back so they will stand by themselves or you can add the letters to a board and hang it from your door. Unfortunately, at the Michael’s here, they didn’t have a large selection of napkins to choose from and the napkins from Dollar Tree were printed on only half of the napkin. I really didn’t get a chance to go to Hobby Lobby to see if they had any. Well, that’s my project for this time. Quick and easy. This would be a great project to make with your little ones. I am sure they would love painting the ghosts and cats. So what will your next project be? Mine...........I don’t know but, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Words to GREAUX by MUM’S THE WORD

Hopefully the weather will cool off soon as the days will get shorter approaching the latter half of the year. Now is about the time of year where plant nurseries and garden centers start bringing in new varieties of plants and flowers. Fall is for the planting cultivating cool season flowers and you will start seeing them now if you haven’t already.

COTTAGE, NAVLAND TAMOND GRETNA, LA Fugitive Warrant

Chrysanthemums are some of the most popular flowers during this time of year. Soon there will be row after row of different varieties of “mums”. Sometimes the vast collections of different mum varieties Will Afton can be overwhelming. Popularity is the main reason you see so many different selections. Plant breeders are always on the lookout for new variations of popular plant. Chrysanthemums can be dated back to 15th century BC in China. In the late 18th century AD they were introduced to the United States and have been a favorite ever since.

Mums are relatively easy to grow and have minimal pest issues. Several leaf spots are known to occur on chrysanthemum including Septoria, Altenaria, and Cercospora. These are controlled by MATHERNE, MARK ANTHONY hand removing infected foliage and treating with an appropriately labeled fungicide. Aphids and SLIDELL, LA spider mites are two of the more important insect pest of chrysanthemum. Both can be easily Fugitive Warrant (2) controlled using horticultural oil sprays when detected early. Make sure to observe and inspect plants in the landscape and garden. Insect outbreaks are much easier to handle if detected early WINSBERRY, LEON III in the process. In addition, fertilization and supplemental irrigation will produce healthy plants. NEW ORLEANS, LA That, coupled with giving plants the proper amount of space to grow is the best way to prevent most insect and disease problems. One series of chrysanthemum to check out this season is the Belgium Mum® group. These selections are bred for their growth habit, flower count and branch flexibility. Belgium Mums display a very nice mounding growth habit, numerous flowers and strong branching to help protect the plant’s shape. Some of the stand outs from this series include Cesaro (a gorgeous golden yellow), Viviana Yellow (a very bright yellow), Conaco Orange (a large flowered, orange color), Pobo Lavender (a dark lavender color) and Amiko Bronze (a reddish colored bronze). Check to see what new varieties and cultivars your local garden center will carry this season. Also, remember when picking out mum plants look for ones that are starting to show a little color so that you can verify the plant tag but not too much. By choosing plants that have not fully opened their blooms, you are increasing the amount of time they are in bloom in your garden. Be careful when handling your mum plants as you get them home. The stems and branches of chrysanthemums are known to be very brittle. Most wholesale growers use plastic cages to help protect the plants during shipment. Keep this in mind as you load up on chrysanthemums this fall season.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

CALL US TODAY...SELL IT TOMORROW! Our quest for a fish of 33 inches or smaller was not happening no matter how many we caught. The goal of getting big fish was being fulfilled anyway.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

Bull reds are thick this time of the year. All these guys wanted for 2 days straight days was bulls. They each wanted to bring in 1 over but limited the size to about 30 inches or under. 2 for the picture and one on the line. AGAIN! Love it when the plan is coming together. The storms were all around but we were able to avoid them for the most.

We had storms to deal.with all day long. That did not change the action. We had a few doubles and even a triple.

Too big to hold standing up. Besides the other fish already wore him down. Once again fantastic color on this 44 inch broad shouldered hog. Gotta love it! Everything big no matter what we did.

Continuing bull red story We were missing some good fish. They were pulling the hooks and in some cases they were breaking the line. We would see tooth chaffing on the monofilament.

Continuing bull red story We were missing some good fish. They were pulling the hooks and in some cases they were breaking the line. We would see tooth chaffing on the monofilament.

Our smallest for 2 days we also put a few jack crevalle in the boat. One of our largest bull reds ran so hard I was positive it was a jack or a shark. Turned out it was just another one in the 41 to 44 inch class.

We had a short while before we were to head in. I suggested we make a 6 mile run and give our last half hour try for a slot red or two. Once in my targeted l place we get a small trout and some rat reds. I am thinking. Let’s try another point over there. It looks

These fish were all big. A lot had multiple spots and the colors were briliant. When I was taking pictures of one another was on the line. like the water is a bit cleaner. This move turned out better. We found another trout and 2vnice 26 inch redfish. Unfortunately we had to run in so we picked up and headed to the barn. They were very happy for the 2 days if fishing. Life is Good! Last paragraph---We found another trout and 2 very nice 26 inch redfish. Please correct it.
